City of Angels

The following is a short study on the new movie "City of Angels" due to be released April 10, 1998. Angels were created for God and have access to Him and His heavenly throne, but this movie tries to tell us that this one angel would give all that up for...Meg Ryan?  This is just beyond comprehension.

The 20th century has seen the proliferation of books and movies bowing to the "Lord of Romance" who is one of the oldest members of the pantheon of gods, and this movie could be his clarion call (along with "Ghost").

...one day in Los Angeles, one particular woman catches the eye of one particular angel, and the seemingly unthinkable happens -- he falls in love.

Seth says, "I would rather have had one breath of her hair, one kiss from her mouth, one touch of her hand, than eternity without it. One."

What I did appreciate is that "City of Angels" is one of the few angel movies that knows one essential fact about angels: They are not former people. "Angels aren't human. We were never human," observes Seth. This is quite true. Angels are purely spiritual beings who predate the creation of the physical universe. That leaves us with the problem of why Seth is a male who is attracted to a female, when angels are without gender. But Maggie doesn't seem to have any complaints there in front of the fireplace.

...Seth grows increasingly frustrated by his new status as a partial
occupant of the human world. He is also deeply in love and wants so fervently to share Maggie's life that he considers a momentous proposition - giving up his status as an angel to become a human being, trading immortality for the harsh yet beautiful chaos of living.

And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own
habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselvese over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.--Jude 6,7

For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee.--Psalm 73:27

Before the Flood, thou with thy lusty crew, False-titled sons of God, roaming the earth, Cast wanton eyes on the daughters of men, And coupled with them, and begat a race.
