sources said it was an infringement of the Oslo accords, noting that the
PA is authorized to sign agreements with a foreign country only with the

ARABS NATIONS SIGN ANTI-TERRORISM PACT: Twenty-two Arab nations signed a
pact on fighting terrorism Wednesday, but made it clear that militants who
target Israel will not be considered terrorists. The pact calls on Arab
countries to deny refuge, training and financial or military support to
groups that launch attacks on other Arab nations. At Lebanon's urging, the
pact exempts 'resistance' movements, saying militant acts aimed at
"liberation and self-determination" do not amount to terrorism. That
clause is intended to exempt attacks on Israel by Palestinians and by
Lebanese terrorist groups fighting to oust Israeli soldiers from the
Security Zone in southern Lebanon. (AP)

The Ships of Chittim
(Dan 11:29-36 GWT) "At the appointed time he will again invade
the south, but this time will be different from the first. {30}
Ships will come from the west to attack him, and he will be
discouraged and turn back. Angry at the holy promise, he will
return, take action, and favor those who abandon the holy
promise. {31} His forces will dishonor the holy place (the
fortress), take away the daily burnt offering, and set up the
disgusting thing that causes destruction. {32} With flattery he
will corrupt those who abandon the promise. But the people who
know their God will be strong and take action. {33} "People who
are wise will help many to understand. But for some time they
will be defeated by swords and flames. They will be captured and
looted. {34} As they are being defeated, they will get a little
help, but many who are not sincere will join them. {35} Some of
the wise people will be defeated in order to refine, purify, and
make them white until the end times. But the appointed time is
still to come. {36} "The king will do as he pleases. He will
highly honor himself above every god. He will say amazing things
against the God of Gods. He will succeed until God's anger is
over, because what has been decided must be done."
Ships that come from the west are referred to as "the ships of
Chittim" in the KJV of the Bible. GWT refers to "God's Word
Translation."

Bible" gives us a perspective on the "ships of Chittim" in Daniel
11:30:
"Ptolemy king of Egypt, and his brother, being come to an
agreement, sent an embassy to the senate of Rome, to implore
their help and assistance against Antiochus, who was preparing to
besiege them in Alexandria; upon which they sent their
ambassadors Caius Popilius Laenas, Caius Decimus, and Caius
Hostilius, in ships from Macedonia {z}, or Greece, to Antiochus,
to require him to desist from making war upon Ptolemy, and that
he quit the land of Egypt; see \\#Nu 24:24\\. Macedonia is called
the land of Cittim, in the Apocrypha:
``And it happened, after that Alexander son of Philip, the
Macedonian, who came out of the land of Chettiim, had
smitten Darius king of the Persians and Medes, that he
reigned in his stead, the first over Greece,''

``Beside this, how they had discomfited in battle Philip,
and Perseus, king of the Citims, with others that lifted
up themselves against them, and had overcome them:''

Romans; and, according to Gorionides {a}, Cittim are the Romans;
and Jerom here interprets them of them; and Bochart has proved at

Grecians and Romans, and here of Romans in Grecian ships."

Chittim, Or Kittim, a plural form (Gen. 10:4), the name of a
branch of the descendants of Javan, the son of Japheth.
Daniel prophesied (Dan. 11:30) that the ships of Chittim would
come against the king of the north. It probably denotes Cyprus,
whose ancient capital was called Kition by the Greeks.

Javan (Jay' van) Personal name meaning, "Greece." Son of Japheth
(Gen. 10:2), and father of Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim
(Gen. 10:4), thus the original ancestor of Greek peoples.
Elsewhere in the Old Testament, the name Javan is used to denote
Greece.
Kittim (Kit' tihm) Tribal name for the island of Cyprus,
sometimes spelled Chittim. This name was derived from Kition, a
city-state on the southeastern side of the island. Long
associated with maritime lore, the island was ruled first by
Greece, then the Assyrians, and finally, Rome. Genesis 10:4
traces the people's roots to Noah's son Japheth. Jeremiah and
Ezekiel both mention it in their prophecies (Jer. 2:10; Ezek.
27:6; compare Isa. 23:1, 12).
Kittim is used in intertestamental writings as denoting all of
the land west of Cyprus. 1 Maccabees credits it as being the land
of Alexander the Great (1:1; 8:5). The writer of Daniel
understood it to be a part of the Roman Empire (11:30) used to
threaten Antiochus Epipanes. The Dead Sea Scrolls contain several
references to Kittim, the most notable being the defeat of her
people (Romans) at the hands of God's people.

Today Cyprus is divided into two rival ethnic zones: Greece,
which controls the southern part of the island, and Turkey, which
gain controlled of about 1/3 of the northern section in 1974.
Recently, there has been an ongoing dispute by Turkey over the
planned purchase of Russian-made anti-aircraft missiles by the
Greek Cyproit (southern section) government. Turkey has
threatened to use force to prevent deployment of these missiles.
The internationally recognized Greek Cypriot government (the
Turkish Cyproit government is not internationally recognized) has
refused to cancel the order, which is to be delivered sometime in
October 1998, unless the island is demilitarized. Cyprus says the
missiles are for defensive purposes only.
Meanwhile, Cyprus started negotiations with the European Union in
hopes of becoming a member within five years. In other words,
Cyprus, with its Grecian influences, may once again be part of a
"revived" Roman Empire.

As a point of info. - Israel has already violated and thus rejected the Oslo
accords by refusing to carry out the required troop withdrawals that had
been agreed to therein.

Iraqi Shiite Leader's Murder May Trigger Crisis in the Gulf
Sheikh Morteza Ali Mohammad Ebrahim Borujerdi, Ayatollah and leader
of Shiite Muslims of Iraq, was assassinated on the evening of
Thursday, April 23. Iraq is a predominantly Sunni country. The
Shiite community is concentrated in southeastern Iraq, in the
strategic marshes of the Shatt al-Arab and in the city of Basra.
This region has been fought over by Iran and Iraq for years and was
ceded to Iraq following the Iran-Iraq war. The Baghdad government has
been deeply suspicious of the loyalty of this minority and has been
particularly vigorous in imposing security on the region. The
treatment of the Iraqi Shiite community has been of great interest
to the predominantly Shiite regime in Tehran. Thus, the death of the
Ayatollah has potentially significant strategic implications.
According to Tehran, the assassination took place in the southern
city of Najaf, while Borujerdi and two companions were returning
home after prayers at the shrine of Imam Ali. The assassins were
able to escape. The Iranians immediately protested to the Iraqis,
who replied that "the intelligence service of a foreign country was
behind this attack because of Sheikh Morteza Ali Mohammad's well know
religious ideas and proper conduct." The statement also said that
security forces were searching for those who perpetrated the
"regrettable" attack.
On Friday, following no further action from Baghdad, the English
language daily "Iran News" and the Iranian news agency IRNA both
started charging that the assassination was the result of actions by
the ruling Iraqi regime. Both reported that the killing "once again
reveals the true nature of Saddam Hussein to the world public." The
reports also dismissed Iraqi claims that "foreign hands" were
involved as an attempt to "safeguard itself against the consequent
crisis of the killing." Reports also stated that: "Sooner or later
the sinful hands of the Iraqi government's agents involved in the
assassination would be revealed." The report concluded by saying,
"The Iraqi president should know that the actions which he initiated
years ago have been driving the Iraqis to their death beds and
unfortunately, whenever there is a move to save Iraqis from their
miseries, an assassination or a similar action by the ruling Iraqi
regime brings the situation back to zero."
Thus far, the extreme responses to the killings have come from the
press, and no major leader has yet stated publicly that a crisis now
exists between Iran and Iraq over the killings. But the Iranian
press does not stray far from official views in matters of foreign
affairs, and it is clear to us that the press is now floating the
idea that Iran holds Iraq responsible for the killing, and that the
situation between Iran and Iraq has been returned to the status quo
ante--intense hostility bordering on violence.
We have argued for several months now that the core issue in the
Persian Gulf has been Iran's emergence from isolation. This has now
clearly taken place. We have also argued that one of the driving
considerations for Iran has been to reverse the outcome of the
Iran-Iraq War, a war that continues to be a burning symbol of
humiliation in Iran. Moreover, recovery of the Shatt al-Arab
waterway and the marshes from Basra southward would represent a
matter of substantial strategic importance to Iran, as it would
dramatically increase Iran's ability to project power along the
western littoral of the Persian Gulf. It would also severely
diminish Iraq's power. Therefore, while the United States is wary
of dismantling Iraq, Iran is drawn to the idea by history and
geopolitics.
The Iranians have been laying the legal and moral basis of action
against Iraq for several months. For example, a few weeks ago, Iran
charged that Iraq had kidnapped a group of Iranian fisherman who had
been shipwrecked along the Iraqi coast. Iran has carefully noted
intensifying Iraqi security operations among the Shiites in the
south. With the most recent killing, Iran has clearly set the stage
for a legitimate, defensible crisis, without yet stepping over the
line.
A subtext of this has been the crisis caused by collapsing oil
prices. The recent agreement in Riyadh and Vienna have clearly
failed to raise oil prices. At most, they have stabilized them at a
level unacceptable to Saudi Arabia, the key player, and one whose
economy cannot endure such low prices. While there is intensive
discussion going on as to how to raise oil prices, the one sure way
is to knock Iraq off the market through military action. Iraq has
recently been releasing reports through the U.N. indicating that
their production is much lower than expected, thereby trying to
deflect interest in eliminating that production altogether.
Nevertheless, with oil prices falling below acceptable levels, and
Saudi finances weakening, an Iranian operation against Iraq, while
posing severe long-term dangers to Saudi security, has its short-term
charms. Thus, Iran might be able to recruit badly needed allies for
an Iraqi adventure, if it wants them.
The Iraqis are protesting that they were not behind the killing but
that some foreign force was involved. The Iraqis seem to be saying
that the Iranians themselves may have acted in order to create a
provocation that justified action. It is unlikely that any other
foreign force, including the United States and Israel, would have
cared. While it would seem odd for Iraq to want to precipitate a
crisis with Iran, if Iraq has already concluded that the crisis is
inevitable, then killing Borujerdi made sense, as it increased
internal security in the strategic southern region by denying the
Shiites a key leader. Thus it seems to us that the Iraqis have
already decided that a crisis is coming and acted in anticipation.
Indeed, political maneuvers in the north among the Kurds and
deployments of Iraqi forces all seem to indicate the potential of
conflict in the South.
Iran now has in its hands all the excuse it needs to justify a
confrontation with Iraq. Iran has stated that a crisis must follow
this killing and that its relations with Iraq have returned to zero.
They have lost the element of surprise, as well as the cooperation of
the Americans, at least for the time being, but they have the
superior force on the ground. Moreover, they have the ability to use
the crisis to create their dreamed of security framework in the
region. Finally, a confrontation would force a suspension of the
political infighting in Iran between Khatami and Khamenei's
supporters.
Borujerdi's murder has laid the foundation for action against Iraq,
should Iran want it. Iraq could arrest the killers and end the
crisis. Or they might let it play out to wherever Iran wants to go.
Iraq is feeling cocky these days. Iran sees a window of opportunity.

Grasshopper plague descends on Nevada, Arizona

LAUGHLIN, Nevada (CNN) -- They crept into people's pants and shirts,
flew through open windows and sometimes even blotted out the double
yellow line along roadways.
In what resembled a scene from a low-budget science fiction film,
millions of grasshoppers descended on this town in southeastern
Nevada, and Lake Havasu City in Arizona on Monday.
The pale-winged critters sent cars skidding as the streets became
slick with squashed bugs, and there was a gruesome "crunch" as people
walked through the streets of Laughlin.
It was, truly, an invasion of the biblical kind, as Elizabeth
Reyes of KTNV found out on location.

Grasshopper Invasion
One of the more bizarre effects of the ongoing El Niño ocean
warming phenomenon is a sudden invasion of grasshoppers in parts
of the Desert Southwest. Swarms of palewing grasshoppers thrived
in this year's moist and mild winter along the lower reaches of
the Colorado River. Millions of them have descended on the
cities of Laughlin, Nev., and Lake Havasu City, Ariz., causing
traffic accidents when motorists slid across insect-covered
roads. Street sweepers were dispatched to vacuum up masses of
the hoppers and to haul them off to a landfill. Officials
believe the insects will be swarming over the area until
midsummer.

The Sun Flares Up NASA's Concerns
Were you feeling a bit odd last week? Perhaps you were suffering
from an electromagnetic disturbance triggered by the mass
ejection of charged particles from the sun. A brain-numbing
diagnosis to be sure, but an affliction that zapped a satellite
camera and promises more electrical disruptions in the days to
come.
NASA scientists last week reported a medium-sized solar flare,
which five days later triggered sensors on Earth-monitoring
weather satellites. The periodic outbursts will get a lot worse
before things get better: The sun is moving into a period,
experienced every 11 years, marked by large numbers of sunspots,
solar flares, coronal mass ejections and other activities. It's
called a "solar maximum" and it can make life difficult for
Earthlings.
The streams of particles spit out by the sun can disrupt
communications satellites and electrical transmissions on Earth.
"It's like a truck driving down the freeway that has an
accident. The goods don't get delivered," says Edwin Reichmann,
a solar physicist at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, who
co-authored a paper predicting that the upcoming solar maximum
cycle will be larger than usual.
Effects of the sun's recent flares were first felt when it
delivered a blast of high-energy protons that zapped the cameras
on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) in orbit just
outside the Earth's protective magnetosphere.
"Most of the flares we have in a solar cycle are C-class,"
Reichmann explains. "As the cycle proceeds toward maximum, we
begin to see M- and X-class events." Flares of this magnitude
can be up to 100 times as powerful as what was seen earlier in
the week.
Upper-level M-class flares and X-class flares can overload
electrical power grids and cause blackouts if operators don't
take precautions. Satellites can be damaged or even destroyed
when their electronics are saturated by charged particles from
large flares.
Earth's atmosphere protects most living beings from the damaging
solar radiation and highly-charged particles, but there are
concerns that the depletion of ozone in the upper atmosphere
will leave the planet more vulnerable.
Military and commercial satellite operators aren't the only
people fretting over the expected surge in geomagnetic storms:
NASA, which is planning an unprecedented number of spacewalks
over the next few years to build the International Space
Station, worries about overexposing its astronauts to the
damaging radiation.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Despite an enormous federal effort to
prepare for a biological terrorist attack, a pretend germ
warfare attack last month showed the government is unprepared to
deal with such a crisis, the New York Times reported Sunday.
The secret drill simulated a small pox hybrid virus that was
dropped along the Mexican-American border. Officials who
participated in the drill soon found themselves arguing as they
were overwhelmed by a panicked population, short of the right
antibiotics and vaccines, hampered by antiquated quarantine laws
and unable to get trained, immunized medical staff to the area,
the Times said.
Officials said the drill was part of an ongoing effort by
President Clinton to increase the U.S. readiness to deal with a
terrorist attack.
The Times said that Clinton has developed a great personal
interest in the possibility of a biological attack and even had
his staff investigate the credibility of "The Cobra Event," a
book about a terrorist attack on New York City which
particularly alarmed him.
On April 10, just after working through most of the night on
the Irish peace accord, Clinton met with a panel of experts he
had convened to brief him on biological weapons. He also asked
them to prepare a report suggesting ways the government could be
better prepared to detect and deter a biological attack, the
Times said.
The report, expected to be submitted this week, suggests
stockpiling antidotes, vaccines and antibiotics and setting up
mechanisms to make large quantities in a hurry, the Times
reported. The experts also recommended strengthening the public
health sector and streamlining the government processes for
detecting and managing a biological crises, the Times said.
Experts widely disagreed on the likelihood of such an attack,
the Times said.
In 1995 Clinton signed a Presidential Decision Directive that
said the United States has "no higher priority" than stopping
terrorists from acquiring weapons of mass destruction, the Times
said.
This week Clinton is expected to sign two new directives that
provide a sweeping plan for dealing with chemical, biological or
computer-related weapons, the Times said.
The directives had created a fight in the administration with
the Defense and Justice Departments objecting to the creation a
powerful anti-terrorist government agency, the Times said. The

I just wanted to add, for what it's worth, that while our atmosphere
is experiencing these "periodic outbursts" of solar flares and
electromagnetic storms, that we *may* also see an increase in
earthquakes -- both in number and intensity and in a variety of
places. Volcanoes may also start to bellow as well.
If you check out the USGS daily list of e-quakes, you may start to
see areas being listed during this active solar period that are not
normally listed (or at least infrequently). Places in the U.S. like
Oklahoma, North Carolina, Virginia, etc.
I've been watching the solar activity for several months now
and we seem to be entering a very active period.

US GIVES 10 DAYS FOR PEACE

The success or otherwise of diplomatic moves over the next 10 days
will determine whether the Oslo process will emerge from its
year-long freeze, THE JERUSALEM POST quoted a senior Washington
official as saying. This weekend, US special envoy Dennis Ross and
Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs Martin Indyk will
travel to the region to prepare for a series of meetings US
Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will hold on May 4 in London.
In Washington's latest effort to revive the Oslo process, Albright
is to meet separately with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and PLO
chairman Yasser Arafat.
Ross and Indyk will be working towards an Israeli agreement to
withdraw its troops from more rural areas of Judea and Samaria. The
US is reportedly insisting that Israel cede to the Palestinian
Authority at least another 11% of areas under its control. Differing
over the scale and timing of the withdrawal, Israel is also
demanding that the PA honour its obligations in signed agreements,
particularly those relating to security.
In another development, the POST reports, "A senior PA official
warned Israel against trying to stop the [unilateral] declaration of
Palestinian statehood." Addressing security officers in Gaza, Abdul
Rahim said: "If they [Israelis] enter our lands, they will not leave
alive. This is our decision. The Israeli side should understand that
we are determined to bring about our stage next year on all our
Palestinian lands according to the international laws."

Russia builds underground bunkers against nuclear attack

underground bunkers, subways and command posts
to help Moscow's leaders flee the capital and
survive a nuclear attack, the Washington Times
reported today. Among the ambitious projects are
a secret subway being built directly to the
residence of Russian President Boris Yeltsin
outside Moscow.

According to the CIA report, construction work
is continuing on a "nuclear-survivable,
strategic command post at Kosvinsky Mountain,"
located deep in the Ural Mountains about 850
miles east of Moscow.
Satellite photographs of Yamantau Mountain, also
located about 850 miles east of Moscow in the
Urals near the town of Beloretsk, show continued
digging at the "deep undergound complex" and new
construction at each of the site's above-ground
support areas, the CIA stated. Interestingly,
Yamantau Mountain means "Evil Mountain" in the
local Bashkir language.
According to the CIA report, the Russians are
building or renovating four complexes within
Moscow that would be used to house senior
Russian government leaders during a nuclear
strike.
Peter Pry, a former CIA analyst and author of a
new book on Russian nuclear operations say the
undergound facility at Yamantau Mountain covers
an area as large as the Capital Beltway. He said
the Russian construction program shows that
Russian leaders do not see a diminished threat
of nuclear conflict. "This is a manifestation of
the Russians' continued war-fighting
attitudes... They believe in the idea that you
can survive and prevail in a nuclear conflict.
These kinds of facilities are designed to
survive for weeks.
By contrast, U.S. nuclear protective facilities
have been largely shut down. The complex
underneath the Greenbriar resort in Virginia was
abandoned, along with another facility in
Virginia known as Mount Weather, U.S. officials
have said.

Japan Considers Revising Constitutional Constraints on Military

According to a report in Japan's Kyodo News Service, at a joint meeting on
April 22, the Foreign Affairs and Defense committees of Japan's ruling
Liberal Democratic Party approved a draft revision to the country's Self-
Defense Forces Law which would allow greater latitude in the use of force
by Japan's armed forces. A previous draft of the bill would have allowed
Japanese forces to use only minimal force if their lives were endangered
while performing search and rescue or maritime inspection duties. The new
draft of the bill states that Japanese forces may use weapons "to the
extent judged reasonably necessary." Furthermore, Kyodo News Service
reports that the draft bill allows Japanese forces to use weapons "when
they evacuate overseas Japanese nationals, at places where planes and ships
are located, and along the routes they take to escort Japanese to planes or
ships." Prime Minister Hashimoto's cabinet is expected to approve the
draft bill on April 28, and then pass it on to the Japanese Diet for final
approval.
Japan was banned by Article 9 of their US-influenced post-war constitution
from using their military in anything but a self-defense role. Throughout
the Cold War, this provision served the country well, as the United States
carried the economic burden of defending Japanese interests in return for
bases from which to confront the Soviet Pacific Fleet. Since the end of
the Cold War, however, Japan has been engaged in an internal debate over
whether the country's significant role in international economic affairs
demanded commensurate participation in the politico-military realm. This
debate received added impetus during the 1990-91 Gulf War, and during the
1996-97 hostage crisis at the Japanese embassy in Peru. An April 21
article in the Yomiuri Shimbun bemoaned the fact that Japan's claims on the
disputed Senkaku, Takeshima, and Kurile islands were weakened by the
constitutional constraints that prevented Japan from projecting an
effective military presence in the region.
With the Asian financial meltdown and, more to the point, Washington's
tepid response, Japan has been confronted by the fact that they are largely
on their own. The United States' close cooperation with Japan on economic
and military matters throughout the Cold War was driven more by the need to
contain the Soviets than by US love of Toyotas. As US and Japanese
interests have become unlinked, Japan has pursued a foreign policy more at
odds with that of the United States. Japan's State Secretary for Foreign
Affairs, Masahiko Komura, is currently on a four-day visit to Tehran, where
he has touted Iran's "key role in regional stability." Komura asserted
that Japan seeks increased political and economic ties with Iran. Japan is
also pursuing the conclusion of a final peace treaty with Russia, and is
eagerly pursuing a variety of energy and development projects throughout
Russia, at a time when Russian and American interests are once again
beginning to clash in the Middle East and Central Asia.
Japan is stepping away from its former symbiotic relationship with the
United States, and part of that step is the easing of restrictions on
Japanese force projection. As Japan vies with China to become the dominant
regional power, we expect this initial revision of the Self-Defense Forces
Law to be followed soon by more substantial changes.

Hailstones rain death
BEIJING (Reuters) - Fist-sized hailstones have killed nine people
in the central Chinese city of Changde, just one day after vicious
hail killed 12 people on the east coast, Xinhua news agency
reported.
The hailstorm in Changde Thursday was accompanied by
thunderstorms, gales and a tornado that demolished houses in the
city and flattened crops in surrounding areas of Hunan province,
Xinhua reported.
Late Wednesday, hail and gale-force winds killed at least 12
people and injured more than 1,000 in two cities in eastern Jiangxi
province, Xinhua reported earlier.
Hailstones rained from the skies for around 30 minutes, drilling
deep holes in the soil and cutting a 10-15 km (6-9 mile) swathe of
destruction stretching for 60 km (37 miles) across fertile farmland,
Xinhua said.
Some 408 houses collapsed and 35,000 homes were badly
damaged in the storm that devastated 13,300 hectares (32,863
acres) of farmland.

be nearing its end, perhaps the one that had them most worried was the
latest Newsweek magazine cover.
The caricature of a tiara-crowned bull in a wedding dress fronting
this week's edition of the widely read U.S. news magazine is a sure
omen of impending doom, stock market veterans said on Wednesday.
``By the time the editor assigns people like you and me to put a big
story on the cover, everybody knows it is a bull market and it is very
late in the game,'' said Robert Stovall, president of Stovall/Twenty-
First Advisers.
``Usually when you see a bull on the cover of a major magazine, that
is the end.''

Futuristic Medicine Now Heads Up for Transplants

Transplanting organs from one body to another has become routine. The
liver, the kidney, the heart. Multiple transplants are more daring,
but they too are becoming more common.
But what about getting it all? The complete package. Someone else
whole body attached to your head.
A total body transplant, is how Dr. Robert White of Case Western Reserve
University describes it. All of the organs, all of extremities and so
forth, brought in the form of a transplant.
It sounds like science fiction, but it isn't. The idea is to take the
functioning body of someone whose brain is dead and attach it to
the head of someone whose body is dying, someone experiencing multiple
organ failure.
I'm talking about a procedure that could actually be done with appropriate
practice and the safeguards, says White, don't want to say tomorrow,
but certainly within the year.
Monkeys First
In fact, doctors have already performed total body transplants on monkeys.
A team of neurosurgeons at Case Western in Cleveland developed the
elaborate procedure.
First, they connected the arteries and veins in the neck.
Then they attached metal clamps to the spinal column to hold the head in
place. Tubes connected the trachea and esophagus. Then doctors sewed
up the skin and muscles around the neck.
Six hours after the operation, the monkeys awoke with totally
different bodies.
That brought a fair amount of excitement to us, says White, in an assertion
that seems wildly understated. They not only would follow us with
their eyes around the laboratory, but they could hear, they could taste.
They could feel about the face.
Not surprisingly, White as been criticized by some people as a modern-day
Dr. Frankenstein. But he's an internationally renowned brain surgery pioneer
who has more than 700 health care publications to his credit. None of his
work, however, has been more controversial than his recently devised
procedures for human body transplants.
Spinal Cord Trouble Spot
There are a great deal of similarities between what we accomplished in
the monkey and what we believe we can accomplish in the human being, says
White, adding that we anticipate it would actually be easier. The
structures in the human neck are simply larger, and we're more experienced
in dealing with them.
While total body transplants show just how far surgeons have come in
manipulating the body, they have yet to figure out how to reconnect the
spinal cord. So for now, patients undergoing this operation would not be
able to move their new bodies. But with spinal chord research developing so
rapidly, many scientists expect that problem can be overcome.
We're making substantial progress in the area of spinal cord regeneration,
notes White. When that problem is solved, then the patient who undergoes a
total body transplant may very successfully maneuver and get out
of bed, and function as a total individual.
That may mean that, for some people, a total body transplant might
someday offer the best way to extend life.

Severe meteor storms coming this fall
Some of nearly 500 satellites could be damaged or destroyed

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif., April 27. In November,
the Earth's atmosphere will be hit with the most
severe meteor shower in 33 years, a
bombardment of debris that could damage or
destroy some of the nearly 500 satellites that
provide worldwide communications, navigation
and weather-watching. The debris consists only
of particles some thinner than a strand of hair
and most no larger than a grain of sand but
they are hurtling through space so fast that they
can have the destructive power of a .22-caliber
bullet.

Whilst listening to an audio file on the net regarding "Prophecy of the
Stars," (1) the speaker outlined how he had plotted the course of comet
Hyakutake (hi-yah-coo-tah-key), taking note of each constellation that
it had passed through. Armed with a copy of E. W. Bullinger's "Witness
of the Stars," he threaded the meaning of each constellation together in
the order of the comet's path and came up with the following.
His observations began with the comet in Libra, which Bullinger explains
as meaning "price which covers." It then moved on to Bootes, "He cometh,"
Ursa Major and Minor, "flocks, sheepfolds," Cassiopeia, "the captives
delivered" and ended with Perseus, "deliverance of the Redeemed."
Therefore, Hyakutake "spelled" out in the heavens:
"The One who paid the price which covers,
He cometh for His sheepfold
to deliver the captives and
to deliver the redeemed."
Comet Hale-Bopp's path could be interpreted to say:
"The Redeemer is Triumphant
having fought and smitten the enemy and
is returning as promised
to deliver the redeemed from their bondage and affliction.
Messiah, the Judge of all the earth, the Light of the world
will come as our glorious Prince of Princes
to lead the pilgrims safely home."

The three tribes/signs that Hale-Bopp did not go through are
noteworthy:
Judah/5. Leo - Messiah's consummated triumph
Zebulon/6. Virgo - The Promised Seed of the woman
Levi/7. Libra - The Redeemer's atoning work, or the price deficient
balanced by the price which covers
Regarding these last three tribes, Judah houses the sceptre and is where
the tabernacle was (Jesus/Jerusalem); Levi denotes the priesthood, which
every member of the church belongs, with Jesus as our High Priest. This
is pretty straight-forward and easy to see in the Bible, but the
correlation of Zebulon in this group proved more difficult. Strong's says
Zebulon means "habitation" or "to dwell" and states that he was the
10th son (10 usually denoting completion) and that the root is Zavul.
According to Avi Mordechai,"Signs in the Heavens," Zavul is used in
the Old Testament as a description of the fourth heaven (there are
supposedly seven) where God's heavenly Temple is. "Zavul is the
fourth heaven. Celestial Y'rushalayim (Jerusalem) is in the fourth
heaven. It is also where the heavenly Temple and altar is erected
and where God and HaMashiach (the Messiah) dwell." Therefore, Jesus
and His Church are together in the New Jerusalem in heaven?
Another interesting thing about Judah/Leo is the Lenoid meteor showers that
occur yearly. The meteors radiate from a point in the constellation of Leo
and hourly rates are usually 10-15 an hour, but this increases every 33 (?)
years when comet Tempel-Tuttle makes its periodic return. In these years,
the Leonids can produce hourly rates of thousands of meteors per hour with
the occasion fireball observed. The Leonids are very fast and are best known
for their long, persistent trains. The Leonids can be observed on November
17, 1997 this year which coincidentally occurs on the day that Noah is said
to have entered the ark and the "windows of heaven opened up" (17th day of
the second month). The last great Leonid meteor shower was in 1966, so
astronomers are expecting high counts either this year or within the next
two years.
One last bit of information comes from the Talmud Berachoth 58b: "...I am
as familiar with the paths of heaven as with the streets of Nehardea, with
the exception of the comet, about which I am ignorant. There is a tradition
that it never passes through the constellation of Orion, for if it did, the
world would be destroyed." ????????

According to an April 28 report in the London-based newspaper "Al-Quds al-
Arabi," the United States has recently restructured its air units in
Bahrain in a manner which seems to indicate an increased preparedness to
carry out strikes against Iraq. The newspaper reported that the previous
deployment of 18 F-16 Falcon multi-role fighters, two B-1 bombers, and four
KC-135 in-flight refueling tankers has been replaced by a new air wing

most significant feature of this new force structure, notes Al-Quds al-
Arabi, is the fact that the long-range F-15A strike aircraft are capable of
carrying 5,000 pound bunker-penetrating bombs. The "bunker busters" would
be necessary for any attack on Iraq's command and control infrastructure to
be effective, since it is believed that Iraq's headquarters,
communications, and arsenals of banned arms and munitions are located in
bunkers deep underground. The newspaper questioned whether this deployment
marked the beginning of a quiet U.S. build-up in anticipation of a
breakdown in relations with Iraq.
If the United States is, in fact, preparing for yet another strike against
Saddam Hussein, this move comes at an unusual time. Even the Clinton
administration has acknowledged that Iraq has recently been unusually
cooperative with UN inspectors. Iraq appears to be cooperating with U.S.
ally Turkey on finally eliminating the PKK. U.S. officials in the Gulf
have begun to reassert the threat posed to the region by Iran. The
domestic political situation in Tehran appears to be deteriorating,
foreboding more pressing concerns in the region than Iraqi posturing.
Finally, the omnipresent atmosphere of scandal in Washington has
temporarily subsided, and hardly calls for a foreign "distraction."
As our long-time readers are aware, apparent U.S. preparation for air
strikes against Iraq runs counter to our analysis of the situation in the
Gulf. We have argued that the United States has turned away from a
planned crushing attack against Saddam Hussein, out of concern over such a
move strengthening Iran. It is possible that U.S. strategy in the region
has once again fundamentally shifted, or that this event lacks the
significance attributed it by the Arabic press. Either way, the presence
of "bunker busters" in the Gulf is worth noting.

It's a boy! The euro gets a gender
Boy or girl? It's the first question to occupy the thoughts of
any expectant parent.
And in France the same question has been asked over that most
eagerly awaited new offspring - the euro.
The sexual politics of Europe's single currency is an issue that
has consumed the French for several months.
The Paris government even established a special commission of
language experts to debate whether the masculine or feminine
article should be used for the euro.
Finally, they decided. The euro will be male.
A French Government spokesman said: "This type of word would tend
towards the masculine.
"There is no example of a word ending in 'o' which is feminine."
Benedictine Pavious of the BBC French Service said:
"Unfortunately, the masculine conveys more authority, it would
seem.
"The dollar is 'le dollar', we have le franc, although the
British pound is feminine."
Of course, economic convergence was never going to be
straight-forward. But the tender gender is just one example of
how the French have made hard work, so far, out of the euro.

A Christlike gay figure in Terrence McNally's new play
5.45 p.m. ET (2145 GMT) May 1, 1998
NEW YORK (AP) - A Christlike gay figure who has sex with his
apostles is at the center of "Corpus Christi,'' Terrence
McNally's new play, which may get a New York production next
season.
The play had a reading April 28 at Manhattan Theater Club, a
nonprofit off-Broadway theater where the author's "Love! Valour!
Compassion!'' premiered.
The New York Post said Thursday that the sex in the play occurred
off-stage and that the play borrows dialogue from the New
Testament.
McNally declined to comment on the play or its plot.
"This is a work-in-progress,'' McNally said in a telephone
interview. "And I never do interviews about plays that are not
finished.''
"Corpus Christi'' is advertised in MTC's subscription brochure
for next season as a possible off-Broadway production, although
no performance dates are given.
The brochure describes the play as follows: "From modern-day
Corpus Christi, Texas, to ancient Jerusalem, we follow a young
gay man named Joshua on a spiritual journey and get to know the
12 disciples who chose to follow him.''
Joe Mantello, who directed "Love! Valour! Compassion!'', was
listed as director.
The Post said one scene in the play paraphrases Pontius Pilate's
questioning of Jesus before his crucifixion. "Art thou king of
the queers?'' the playwright's Pontius Pilate character asks.
"Thou sayest,'' Joshua responds.
Lynne Meadow, the theater's artistic director, and Barry Grove,
its executive producer, also declined to comment on the play's
subject matter or MTC's possible production plans.
McNally has had a long relationship with Manhattan Theater Club
which has produced seven other of his plays besides "Corpus
Christi'' and "Love! Valour! Compassion!''

Ptolemy Lagus who reigned over Egypt, Lybia, Cyrene, Ethiopia, Arabia,
Phoenicia, Coelesyria, Cyprus, several islands in the Aegean and many cities
in Greece
"one of his [Alexander's] princes...shall be strong above him, and have
dominion"
Seleucus Nicator reigned over Macedonia, Greece, Thrace, Asia, Syria,
Babylonia, Media and all eastern countries as far as India
11:6 "And in the end of years they shall join themselves"
1. Egypt - Ptolemy Philadelphus son of Ptolemy Lagus

"for the king's daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north
to make an agreement"
Bernice, daughter of Ptolemy Philadelphus marries Antiochus.
"but she shall not retain the power of the arm"
She doesn't unite the two kingdoms because as soon as her father is dead,
Antiochus gets rid of her and takes his former wife, Laodice, back.
"neither shall he stand, nor his arm"
Laodice has Antiochus poisoned.
"but she shall be given up"
Seleucus Callinicus, the son of Antiochus and Laodice, is placed on the
throne after Antiochus' death. He slays Bernice and her entourage who have
fled to Daphne.
11:7 "But out of a branch of her roots shall one stand up in his estate"
Ptolemy Euergetes, Bernice's brother.
"which shall come with an army"
He came too late but swore revenge.
"and shall enter into the fortress of the king of the north"
Seleucus Callinicus, king of Syria
"and shall prevail"
Ptolemy Euergetes took Syria and Cilicia, superior parts beyond Euphrates,
almost all Asia and was only stopped when bad news from home reached him.
11:8 "And shall also carry captive into Egypt their gods, with their=
princes"
Ptolemy takes the idols that Caymbyses took when he overthrew Egypt. The
historians relate that Ptolemy carried captive 2,500 idols. The people are
so happy they name Ptolemy "Euergetes," "the benefactor."
"and he shall continue more years than the king of the north"
Ptolemy Euergetes reigned 25 years, outliving Seleucus by 4 years.
11:10 "But his sons shall be stirred up"
Seleucus Callinicus' sons named Seleucus Ceraunus and Antiochus the Great
"and one shall certainly come, and overflow, and pass through"
Seleucus Ceraunus dies and Antiochus the Great is left. He attacked
Seleucia and took it, entered Coelesyira and took it. The governor there,
Theodotus, had been offended by Ptolemy so he helped Antiochus take the
region. He invaded Palestine and took several places in it and went as far
as Arabia.
11:11 "And the king of the south shall be moved with choler"
Ptolemy Philopator succeeded Ptolemy Euergetes.
"the multitude shall be given into his hand"
Antiochus' army is delivered into the hands of Ptolemy Philopator, although
Antiochus, himself, escapes. "The victory is ascribed to Arsinoe, the sister
and wife of Ptolemy, who ran around with her hair dishevelled and by
entreaties and promises greatly encouraged the soldiers to fight."
11:13 "For the king of the north shall return"
Ptolemy Philopator dies and his son Ptolemy Epiphanes takes over at 5 years
of age.
"and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former"
Antiochus takes advantage of the young king and makes a pact with Philip,
king of Macedon, to divide Egypt between themselves.
11:14 "And in those times there shall many stand up against the king
of the south"
Ptolemy Epiphanes is a minor and the following try to take advantage of him:
1. Antiochus of Syria
2. Philip of Macedon
3. Agathocles and Agathoclea, favorites of the former king of Egypt, take
over ruling the kingdom and are hated by the people who riot, etc.
4. Scopas, a general of the king of Egypt, tries to take the government for
himself.
11:15 "So the king of the north shall come, and cast up a mount, and take
the most fenced cities"
Antiochus the Great goes and takes the cities that Scopas had taken for
himself and when the Jews see this, they surrender and receive him.
11:16 "But he that cometh against him shall do according to his own will,
and none shall stand before him"
Antiochus the Great will do what he wants in the conquered areas and the
king of Egypt can't do anything about it.
11:17 "He shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole
kingdom"
Antiochus now wants Egypt itself.
"and he shall give him the daughter of women, corrupting her"
Antiochus offers his daughter Cleopatra in marriage to Ptolemy. They marry
and Antiochus gives Coelesyira, Samaria, Judea and Phoenicia as a dowry. He
hopes to get all of Egypt for himself with this alliance.
"but she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him"
Cleopatra forgets about her father and takes her husband's side. Both of=
them
even congratulate the Romans for their victories over Antiochus.
11:18 "After this he shall turn his face unto the isles, and shall
take many"
Antiochus is thwarted in his plans for Egypt so he takes a large fleet and
starts sailing the Aegean and captures Rhodes, Samos, Colophon, Phocea nad
many other islands, and also several cities of Greece and Asia on the
sea coast.
"but a prince for his own behalf shall cause the reproach offered by him
to cease"
Antiochus caused a great deal of grief to the Romans who took up arms and
fought him.
"without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn upon him"
The Romans had so many victories over Antiochus that the balance was
definitely in their favor. The peace treaty between him and the Romans
stated that he pay all the expenses of the war, that he leave Asia and leave
hostages, one being his son, Antiochus Epiphanes.
11:19 "Then he shall turn his face towards the fort of his own land"
Antiochus goes home defeated.
"but he shall stumble and fall, and not be found"
He doesn't have the money to pay for the war expenses so he decides to
rob the temple of Jupiter Elymaeus, but he is betrayed and killed.=7F
11:20 "Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory
of the kingdom"
Seleucus Philopator, eldest son of Antiochus the Great. The taxes were high
because the Roman debt still needed to be paid and also for the fact that
Seleucus was a lover of money.
"but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle"
He reigned only 12 years at most (his father having reigned 37 years). His
treasurer, Heliodorus, poisoned him.
11:21 "And in his estate shall stand up a vile person"
Antiochus Epiphanes. He had been hostage in Rome for 11-12 years without
anyone giving much thought to him. The hostages had been changed every 3-4
years, yet he remained. He was "very immoral, given to drunkenness,
lasciviousness, uncleanness, and unnatural lusts and a violent persecutor
of God...he was called by some Epimanes the madman; though he took to
himself the title of Epiphanes the 'illustrious,' the reverse of his
character."
"he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries"
The people didn't want him, but he came and said he'd take the kingdom
not for himself, but for his nephew Demetrius, the son of his brother
Seleucus who was now a hostage in Rome.
