Mir is a Russian word which means either "World" or "Peace". The station
was sent up in the 1980's as one in a series of space stations used to
explore and conduct testing.

Candlesticks

(Rev 2:1 KJV) "Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These
things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who
walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;"

(Rev 1:12-13 KJV) "And I turned to see the voice that spake with me.
And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; {13} And in the
midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed
with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a
golden girdle."

(Rev 1:20 KJV) "The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in
my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are
the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which
thou sawest are the seven churches."

-------------

"We are at once reminded of the seven-branched candlestick of the
tabernacle. Here there is not one candlestick with seven branches,
but seven candlesticks, representing the Christian Church. The Jewish
Church was one, as being the Church of a single people. The Christian
Church, though essentially one, is a Church composed of many peoples.
It is no longer outwardly one or in one place. According to the
literal meaning of the word, lampstand, the several lampstands are
bearers of the light (Matthew 5:14, 16), “holding forth the word of
life” (Philippians 2:15, 16)."

(Vincent's Word Studies, Vol. 2, The Writings of John)

-------------

"The tabernacle was a tent without windows, and thus artificial light
was needed. This was supplied by the candlestick, which, however,
served also as a symbol of the church or people of God, who are 'the
light of the world.' The light which 'symbolizes the knowledge of God
is not the sun or any natural light, but an artificial light supplied
with a specially prepared oil; for the knowledge of God is in truth
not natural nor common to all men, but furnished over and above
nature.'"

(Easton's Bible Dictionary)

------------

(Rev 2:5 KJV) "Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and
repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee
quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except
thou repent."

"'Its [Ephesus'] candlestick has been for centuries removed out of
his place; the squalid Mohammedan village which is nearest to its
site does not count one Christian in its insignificant population;
its temple is a mass of shapeless ruins; its harbor is a reedy pool;
the bittern booms amid its pestilent and stagnant marshes; and
malaria and oblivion reign supreme over the place where the wealth of
ancient civilization gathered around the scenes of its grossest
superstitions and its most degraded sins'" (Farrar, “Life and Work of
Paul,” ii., 43, 44).

the deeds reached Pergamos, they became doctrine (Rev 2:15). Ephesus
would not put up with the Nicolaitanes, but Pergamos held the

(Rev 2:6 NIV) "But you have this in your favor: You hate the
practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate."

"Nicolaitanism probably represents a movement present in the churches
at Ephesus and at Pergamos to subject the people of God to one or
more powerful leaders. The term is derived from nikao (Gk.), "to
conquer," and laos (Gk.), "people," hence, "people conquerors." Very
plausibly, the Nicolaitan movement marks the beginning of a form of
priesthood in the church. On the other hand, this group has also been
viewed as representing those who have compromised with the world
through the practices of immorality and idolatry. Though some
tradition has identified them as followers of the Nicolas of Acts
6:5, one of the first seven deacons in the early church at Jerusalem,
evidence for this identification is not extensive."

U.N. passes Y2K resolution
By Erich Luening
Staff Writer, CNET NEWS.COM
June 26, 1998, 4:30 p.m. PT

The United Nations today passed a resolution on
the Year 2000 technology problem, appealing to all
member states to cooperate on global awareness
initiatives and calling upon government, the public,
and the private sector to share their experiences in
addressing the issue.

The resolution, which was adopted by the General
Assembly, also asks the organization's secretary
general to take measures to ensure that the U.N.'s
own computer systems are Y2K-compliant and to
put in place conversion assistance guidelines for
member states. It also requests the
secretary-general to report to the General
Assembly in September on the steps taken within
the U.N. computer system and with member states
to resolve the problem.

The resolution comes on the heels of a recently
launched global online conference on the Year
2000 problem, sponsored by the Group of Eight
(G8) and directly supervised by the U.S. General
Services Administration (GSA).

Arafat says Palestinians have no more patience for Israel
Copyright (c) 1998 Reuters News Service

RAMALLAH, West Bank (July 1, 1998 06:33 a.m. EDT ) - Palestinian
President Yasser Arafat said on Wednesday that Palestinians had run
out of patience with Israel and would defend Arab East Jerusalem
against Israeli measures in "whatever way we can."

Arafat called for an Arab summit and a meeting of foreign ministers
from the Organization of the Islamic Conference to formulate responses
to an Israeli plan to expand the municipal boundaries of Jerusalem.

"The Palestinian leadership has no more patience and our people have
no more patience. All that's left for us to do is to defend Jerusalem
in whatever way we can," Arafat told a special session of the Palestinian
Legislative Council.

Council speaker Ahmed Korei said the session was called to discuss "the
dangers Jerusalem is facing" from the plan that would link the city to
suburbs in Israel and bring some West Bank settlements under a Jerusalem
"umbrella municipality."

The plan has been under discussion since Tuesday at the U.N. Security
Council, where speakers accused Israel of trying to change the population
balance in Jerusalem and endangering the already faltering Middle East
peacemaking.

Israel says economic considerations are behind the initiative, which
would increase Jerusalem's tax base. Israel views East Jerusalem, which
contains sites holy to Jews, Christians and Moslems, as part of its
"indivisible" capital.

Arafat said the battle for East Jerusalem, which Israel captured in the 1967
Middle East war and later annexed, was "one of life or death."

"There will be no peace, no security, no stability without the return of
liberated Jerusalem, the eternal capital for an independent Palestinian
state, whether they like it or not," said Arafat, drawing loud applause from
legislators.

The day is over, you are driving home. You tune in your radio. You
hear a little blurb about a little village in India where some
villagers
have died suddenly, strangely, of a flu that has never been seen
before. It's not influenza, but three or four fellows are dead, and
it's kind of
interesting, and they're sending some doctors over there to
investigate it.

You don't think much about it, but on Sunday, coming home from
church, you hear another radio spot. Only they say it's not three
villagers, it's 30,000 villagers in the back hills of this particular
area of India, and it's on TV that night. CNN runs a little blurb;
people are heading there from the disease center in Atlanta because
this disease strain has never been seen before.

By Monday morning when you get up, it's the lead story. For it's not
just India; it's Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and before you know it,
you're hearing this story everywhere and they have coined it now as
"the
mystery flu". The President of France makes an announcement that
shocks Europe. He is closing their borders. No flights from India,
Pakistan, or any of the countries where this thing has been seen.

And that's why that night you are watching a little bit of CNN before
going to bed. Your jaw hits your chest when a weeping woman is
translated from a French new program into English: "There's a man
lying in a hospital in Paris dying of the mystery flu". It has come
to
Europe. Panic strikes. As best they can tell, once you get it, you
have it for a week and you don't know it. Then you have four days of
unbelievable symptoms. And then you die.

Britain closes it's borders, but it's too late. South Hampton,
Liverpool, North Hampton, and it's Tuesday morning when the President
of the United States makes the following announcement: "Due to a
national
security risk, all flights to and from Europe and Asia have been
canceled. If your loved ones are overseas, I'm sorry. They cannot
come back until we find a cure for this thing".

Within four days, our nation has been plunged into an unbelievable
fear. People are selling little masks for your face. People are
talking
about what if it comes to this country, and preachers on Tuesday are
saying, "It's the scourge of God".

It's Wednesday night and you are at a church prayer meeting when
somebody runs in from the parking lot and says, "Turn on the radio -
turn on the radio". And while the church listens to a little
transistor
radio with a microphone stuck up to it, the announcement is made.
"Two women are lying in a Long Island hospital dying from the mystery
flu".
Within hours it seems, this thing just sweeps across the country.
People
are working around the clock trying to find an antidote. Nothing is
working. California - Oregon - Arizona - Florida - Massachusetts.
It's as
though it's just sweeping in from the borders.

And then, all of a sudden the news comes out. The code has been
broken. A cure has been found. A vaccine can be made. It's going
totake the blood of somebody who hasn't been infected, and so, sure
enough, all through the Midwest, through all those channels of
emergency broadcasting, everyone is asked to do one simple thing:
"Go to your downtown hospital and have your blood type taken. That's
all
we ask of you. When you hear the sirens go off in your neighborhood,
please make your way quickly, quietly, and safely to the hospitals.

Sure enough, when you and your family get down there late on that
Friday night, there is a long line, and they've got nurses and
doctors coming out and pricking fingers and taking blood and putting
labels on it. Your wife and your kids are out there, and they take
your blood type and they say, "Wait here in the parking lot and if we
call your name, you can be dismissed and go home".

You stand around, scared, with your neighbors, wondering what in the
world is going on, and that this is the end of the world. Suddenly,
a young man comes running out of the hospital screaming. He's yelling
a name and waving a clipboard. What? He yells it again! And your
son
tugs on your jacket and says, "Daddy, that's me".

Before you know it, they have grabbed your boy. "Wait a minute!
Hold it!" And they say, "It's okay, his blood is clean. His blood is
pure. We want to make sure he doesn't have the disease. We think he
has got the right type." Five tense minutes later, out come the
doctors and
nurses, crying and hugging one another - some are even laughing.

It's the first time you have seen anybody laugh in a week, and an old
doctor walks up to you and says, "Thank you, sir. Your son's blood
type is perfect. It's clean, it is pure, and we can make the
vaccine."
As the word begins to spread all across that parking lot full of
folks,
people are screaming and praying and laughing and crying.

But then the gray-haired doctor pulls you and your wife aside and
says, "May we see you for a moment? We didn't realize that the donor
would be a minor and we need. . . we need you to sign a consent
form." You begin to sign and then you see that the number of pints
of blood to
be taken is blank.

"H-h-h-how many pints?" And that is when the old doctor's smile
fades and he says, "We had no idea it would be a little child. We
weren't
prepared. We need it all!" "But - but..." "You don't understand.
We are talking about the world here. Please sign. We- we need it
all -
we need it all!"

"But can't you give him a transfusion?"

"If we had clean blood we would. Can you sign? Would you sign?"
In numb silence you do. Then they say, "Would you like to have a
moment with him before we begin?"

Can you walk back? Can you walk back to that room where he sits on a
table saying, "Daddy? Mommy? What's going on?" Can you take his
hands and say, "Son, your mommy and I love you, and we would never,
ever let anything happen to you that didn't just have to be. Do you
understand that?" And when the old doctor comes back in and says,
"I'm sorry, we've - - we've got to get started. People all over the
world
are dying." Can you leave? Can you walk out while he is saying,
"Dad?
Mom? Dad? Why - why have you forsaken me?"

And then next week, when they have the ceremony to honor your son,
and some folks sleep through it, and some folks don't even come
because they go to the lake, and some folks come with a pretentious
smile and just pretend to care. Would you want to jump up and say,
"MY SON DIED FOR ALL OF YOU! DON'T YOU CARE?"

Is that what God wants to say? "I ALLOWED MY SON TO DIE SO THAT
ALL OF YOU COULD LIVE! DON'T YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I CARE?"

"Father, seeing it from your eyes breaks our hearts. Maybe now we
can begin to comprehend the great love you have for us. Amen."

Arafat: Jerusalem is 'life or death'

                    By MOHAMMED NAJIB and gencies

RAMALLAH (July 2) - Palestinian Authority Chairman
Yasser Arafat said yesterday that the government's
new plan for strengthening Israel's hold over all
of Jerusalem could dash the last hopes for peace.

Palestinians will use all means to defend the
city, Arafat told a special meeting of Palestinian
Legislative Council in Ramallah. "The battle for
Jerusalem is a battle of life and death for the
Palestinian people," Arafat said, wagging his
finger from time to time to make a point.

"This [Israeli] settlement aggression is a total
destruction of the peace process," Arafat told the
                    legislators.

Arafat demanded that Arab countries convene a
summit on the future of the city. He also urged
the UN Security Council, which began debate on the
Jerusalem plan Tuesday, to condemn Israel. The
council has shelved the matter indefinitely
                    without a vote.

PA Finance Minister Mohammed Nashashibi told the
legislators that meetings and summits would not by
themselves be enough to stop Israel's moves in
east Jerusalem and are "not an alternative to the
                    confrontation."

The Jerusalem plan, introduced last month, would
expand the city's boundaries westward, into Israel
proper, to increase the Jewish population. It
would also extend Jerusalem municipal authority to
nearby Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

Arafat said: "Our Legislative Council is meeting
today at this emergency session, to [discuss]
plans which are able to protect Jerusalem from the
settlement dangers which threaten it, after the
failure of all the international efforts during
the last two years to stop the current Israeli
                    government."

The Netanyahu government, he added, "wants to
change the Arabic nature of the sacred city, and
                    deface it's cultural sites."

In his speech, Arafat said the Palestinians would
never settle for Israeli control over all of the
                    city.

"The patience of the Palestinian leadership and
the Palestinian people has run out," Arafat said.
"Let Netanyahu and his government know that
Jerusalem is a red line, and that there is not one
person among us who would make concessions on any
                    grain of soil of Jerusalem."

US Consul General in Jerusalem John Herbst
attended Arafat's speech, but declined to comment
                    on it.

PLC speaker Ahmed Koreh Abu Ala said: "The Israeli
decision to boost their dominance of the sacred
city, and what is called the Greater Jerusalem, is
                    a provocation against our feelings."

Earlier yesterday, the Palestinians sent a message
to US President Bill Clinton, asking him not to
veto a Security Council condemnation of Israel,
                    said Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat.

Erekat said a US veto would raise questions about
Washington's role as mediator in the
                    Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. "If this should
happen, then we can no longer say that the United
States is the co-sponsor" of the peace process,
                    Erekat said.

"NO AUTHENTIC THEOLOGICAL REASON WHY MOSLEMS SHOULD
NOT RECOGNIZE THE STATE OF ISRAEL - AM YISROEL CHAI!"

by Prof. Abdul Hadi Palazzi

JERUSALEM, July 2, 1998, Root & Branch: From an Islamic point of
view, is there any fundamental reason which prohibits Moslems from
recognizing Israel as a friendly State?

I realize that a negative answer to the above question is taken for
granted by popular opinion. My approach, however, is not based on
popular opinion or the current political situation, but on a
theological analysis of authentic Islamic sources.

Viewing the Jewish return to Israel as a Western invasion and
Zionists as recent colonizers is new. It has no basis in authentic
Islamic faith. According to the Koran, no person, people or
religious community can claim a permanent right of possession over
any territory. The Earth belongs exclusively to G-d, and He is free
to entrust sovereignty over land to whomever He likes for whatever
time period that He chooses.

"Say: 'O God, King of the kingdom (1), Thou givest the kingdom to
whom Thou pleasest, and Thou strippest off the kingdom from whom Thou
pleasest; Thou endowest with honour whom Thou pleasest, and Thou
bringest low whom Thou pleasest: all the best is in Thy hand.
Verily, Thou hast power over all things.'"(2) (Koran 3:26)

From the above Koranic verse we deduce a basic principle of the
Monotheistic philosophy of history: G-d chooses as He likes in the
relationship between peoples and countries. Sometimes He gives a
land to a people, and sometimes He takes His possession back and
gives it to another people. In general, we can say that He gives as
a reward for faithfulness and takes back as a punishment for
wickedness, but this rule does not permit us to say that God's ways
are always plain and clear to our eyes, since His secrets are
inaccessible to the human intellect.

Using Islam as a basis for preventing Arabs from recognizing any
sovereign right of Jews over the Land of Israel is new. Such beliefs
are not found in classical Islamic sources. Concluding that
anti-Zionism is the logical outgrowth of Islamic faith is wrong.
This conclusion represents the false transformation of Islam from a
religion into a secularized ideology.

Such a false transformation of Islam was in fact made by the late
Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin el-Husseini. He is the one person most
responsible, both morally and materially, for the repeated Arab
defeats in their conflict with the Jews in Israel. Husseni not only
incited Arabs against Jews. He also encouraged the torture and
murder of all Arabs who correctly understood that Arab cooperation
with Jews was a precious opportunity for the development of the Land
of Israel. Hussein iended his woeful life by putting his perverted
religious teachings at the service of theevil and pagan Nazis.

After Husseini came Jamal al-Din 'Abd al-Nasser. Nasser based his
policy on Pan-Arabism, hatred and contempt for Jews, and an alliance
with the atheistic Soviet Union. Nasser's terrible choices were
critical factors in maintaining Arab backwardness. Fortunately, most
of Nasser's mistakes were afterward corrected by the martyr Anwar
Sadat. (3)

After the defeat of Nasserianism, Islamic fundamentalist movements
made anti-Zionism the primary feature of their propaganda. They
presented the negation of any Jewish rights to the Land of Israel as
rooted in authentic Islam and derived from authentic Islamic
religious principles.

THE LAND OF ISRAEL IN KORANIC EXEGESIS

The fundamentalist Moslem program to use Islam as an instrument for
political warfare against Jews finds a major obstacle in the Koran
itself. Both the Bible and the Koran state quite clearly that the
right of the Israelites to the Land of Israel does not depend on
conquest and colonization. This right flows from the will of
almighty G-d Himself.

Both the Jewish and Islamic Scriptures teach that G-d, through His
chosen servant Moses, decided to free the offspring of Jacob from
slavery in Egypt and to constitute them as heirs of the Promised
Land. Whoever claims that Jewish sovereignty over the Land of
Israel is something new and rooted in human politics denies divine
revelation and divine prophecy as explicitly expressed in our Holy
Books (the Bible and Koran).

The Koran relates the words by which Moses ordered the Israelites to
conquer the Land:

"And [remember] when Moses said to his people: 'O my people, call in
remembrance the favour of G-d unto you, when he produced prophets
among you, made you kings, and gave to you what He had not given to
any other among the peoples. O my people, enter the Holy Land which
G-d has assigned unto you, and turn not back ignominiously, for then
will ye be overthrown, to your own ruin.'" (4) (Koran 5:20-21)

Moreover - and those who try to use Islam as a weapon against Israel
always conveniently ignore this point - the Holy Koran explicitly
refers to the return of the Jews to the Land of Israel before the
Last Judgment - where it says:

"And thereafter We [Allah] said to the Children of Israel: 'Dwell
securely in the Promised Land. And when the last warning will come
to pass, we will gather you together in a mingled crowd.'" (5)
(Koran 17:104)

Therefore, from an Islamic point of view, there is NO fundamental
reason which prohibits Moslems from recognizing Israel as a friendly
State.

Am Yisroel Chai!

NOTES

1. The original Arabic word we translated as "kingdom" is mulk, from
a Semitic root m-l-k, that is common to both Arabic and Hebrew.
According to Islamic theological terminology, the three synonyms for
"kingdom" are mulk, malak=FBt and jabar=FBt. They refer respectively to
the physical, psychical and spiritual levels of existence. Of
course, G-d can be called King of all of them; if here only mulk is
quoted, it depends on the fact that this verse directly concerns the
earthly domain. To denote a kingdom in the secular and political
sense, Arabiccommonly uses another derived form, that is mamlakah.

2. Koran 3:26. For typographical reasons, it is not possible to
reproduce here the original Arabic text of the Koran, which must
nevertheless be understood as quoted. As well here as in other
Koranic quotations, the English translation of the meaning of
Koranic words from Arabic is my own, but based on the most
authoritative English commentaries, such as M. Marmaduke Pickthall's
"The Meaning of The Glorious Koran" (Beirut 1973), 'A. Y=FBsuf 'Ali,
"The Holy Koran - Text, Translation and Commentary" (Maryland 1983)
and A. 'A. Maududi "The Holy Koran - Text, Translation and Brief
Notes" (Lahore 1986).

3. In using the term "martyr" I do not simply refer to one who lost
his life for a good cause. I give a precise translation of the
Arabic word "shahid," which identifies a "martyr" in the strictly
religious sense; that is to say, someone who spent his life serving
the cause of G-d. Since making peace with former enemies is an
explicit Koranic order (see Koran 8:61), and since, according to
Islam, Peace is G-d Himself, any believer who is killed because of
his search for Peace must be understood as a religious martyr. The
same considerations clearly apply to Yitzhak Rabin.

4. Koran 5:20-21 (emphasis added).

5. Koran 17:104 (emphasis added).

Current News Summary from editors of
ReligionToday.com

France has ruled that the Jehovah's Witnesses faith is not a
religion and thus it owes $50 million in back taxes. The French
Tax Authority ruled the Witnesses ineligible for a church
exemption and gave the group a 60% tax rate, which amounts to $25
million, which was doubled by penalties and interest. A lien was
put on all Jehovah's Witnesses property in France.

..The group has been criticized in recent years by anti-sect
organizations. It has 220,000 members in France and has done
mission work since 1900.

.."Their intent seems to be to break us financially and stop our
work in France," said Judah Schroeder of the Watch Tower Bible
and Tract Society, based in New York. The tax decision was made
in May after an audit of donations. Religious freedom advocates
from the Witnesses and other groups in 15 European nations
planned to meet in Paris to appeal the action and warn against a
trend they say threatens minority religions.

..The Jehovah's Witnesses claims 15 million members, mostly
outside North America and Europe. Members believe in the imminent
return of Christ and are active proselytizers. They withhold
allegiance from all earthly authorities, and become conscientious
objectors from military service. Many went to Nazi death camps in
Germany for not joining Hitler's army. Others were deported from
Nazi-occupied France.

------------

Pope John Paul II's effort to end debate over controversial
issues won't convince alienated Catholics, several theologians
and scholars said. The pope, targeting liberal Catholic
theologians who have challenged the Vatican's authority on
doctrinal matters, warned this week that Catholics who dissent
from teachings on issues such as the ordination of women would
face a "just penalty." Some theologians said the document's harsh
tone would further harden Catholics who already consider Vatican
pronouncements irrelevant.

.."It's a pretentious attempt by the present pope to stifle
conversation and dialogue," Thomas Groome, a professor of
theology and religious education at Boston College, told the
Boston Globe. "I was on the verge of tears. It's a very sad day."

..Others said the pope was merely adding emphasis to
long-standing Vatican teaching. Matthew Lamb, a professor of
theology at Boston College, said the decree was necessary because
many theologians have abandoned sound scholarship for cultural
trends. There was little comment from Catholic hierarchy in the
United States.

..A commentary accompanying the pope's pronouncement, written by
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, gave examples of doctrines that are
"infallibly taught" by the church. These include topics such as
euthanasia, sex outside of marriage, and the exclusion of women
from the priesthood. Anyone who rejects a Catholic doctrine would
"no longer be in full communion with the Catholic Church," and
could be warned or excommunicated.

..The papal document could be used by conservative scholars at
Catholic universities who are trying to weed out liberal,
dissenting teachers, one commentator said.

PA NEWSPAPER DENIES HOLOCAUST
An article denying the Holocaust was published yesterday in the
official Palestinian Authority newspaper, Al Hiyyat al-Jadida. Author
Ali Sayyif Al-Jeroen wrote, "The atrocities of the Holocaust are an
invention of the Jews, designed to arouse affection for them." He
claims that the Jews made up the story of the gas chambers, and
cynically distributed photos of Nazi soldiers shooting women and
children. "It is clear," the article continued, "that Hitler killed
some Jews, but he did them a service, the fruits of which they are
harvesting up til this very day."

Newly-found asteroid points to unseen danger

Weekend News Today
Source: Foxnews

Thu Jul 2 , 1998 -- Astronomers said Thursday they had found an
asteroid in a place where they have never been found before, orbiting
entirely between the Earth and the sun, and warned there may be more
out there. They say this asteroid is nothing to worry about, but
because it was so hard to spot, there could be others in orbit that
no one would see until the last minute. Astronomy professor David
Tholen of the University of Hawaii and graduate student Robert
Whiteley used a special camera to spot the asteroid.

This new asteroid, dubbed 1998 DK36, always has the sun somewhere in
the background from the Earth's perspective. So it is hard to see.
Tholen said there could be others like it, coming out of the sun —
and no one had been looking out for them.

Tholen and Whiteley were scanning the skies at dawn and dusk —
looking for asteroids that might be inside the earth's orbit. They
found one. They said it appears to be very close to, but slightly
inside the orbit of the Earth. They calculate it is about 130 feet in
diameter. That's about the size of the asteroid believed to have
flattened trees for hundreds of square miles in the Tunguska region
of Siberia in June of 1908, when it exploded in the atmosphere with
the force of a nuclear bomb. But Tholen doubts this asteroid will hit
Earth.

TARGET TURKMENISTAN

We've received word that on June 20th a hefty meteorite fell
about 100 km from the city of Tashauz in Turkmenistan. According
to scientist Seid Muhamednazarov, the daylight fall was preceded
by a dazzling orange bolide that left a train of black smoke as
it moved northeast across the sky. The projectile broke into at least
three pieces before impact, and the largest fragment created a small
crater about 6 meters wide and 4 deep. At its bottom a recovery team
found a cone-shaped stony iron meteorite weighing between 300 and 500
kg.

VOLCANO: DATE OF ERUPTION OR ACTIVITY:
Etna, Sicily, Italy July 1, 1998
Papandayan, Java, Indonesia July 1, 1998
Mount St. Helens July 1, 1998

====================
Mt. Etna, Sicily, Italy

July 1, 1998

Vigorous lava fountaining occurred at Voragine on the morning of July
1. This activity lasted between 30 minutes and one hour. Many bombs up
to 5 ft (1.5 m) in diameter fell on the eastern side of Etna's main
summit cone. The activity could be seen for several miles. Lava
fountaining and ash emissions have alternated frequently between the
vents of Voragine within the last week.

Currently, ash-rich explosions are occurring from the northern vent in
Bocca Nuova, and lava is slowly flowing from SE Crater. Some
explosions from this crater produce small ash plumes. Lava effusion
from the intracrater cone in SE Crater is continuous. Explosions from
the northern vents of Bocca Nuova are infrequent but very powerful.
Large quantities of ash were ejected during at least one of these
explosions.

This information was summarized from a report by Boris Behncke on his
Etna News Page.
====================

Papandayan, Java, Indonesia

Papandayan is a stratovolcano in Java, Indonesia. It is best known for
a debris avalanche in 1772 that killed thousands of people. The last
eruption at Papandayan occurred in1942.

July 1, 1998

Activity at Papandayan has been increasing since June 20. A large
increase in the number of seismic events has been occurring over this
time. This increase in seismic activity was followed by gas emissions
with fairly long durations. Gas during these events was released from
Emas Crater. Small phreatic explosions ejected mud over fumarolic
vents at Papandayan on June 23, throwing gas and mud up to five meters
above the crater.
====================

Mt. St. Helens

July 1, 1998

The number of well-located earthquakes at Mt. St. Helens has increased
again this month, this time from 165 events in May to 318 in June.
These quakes were so small, however, that the total seismic energy
release was about the same as the month of May. A survey of volcanic
gases showed that magmatic carbon dioxide was present above the
volcano. As magma rises towards the surface, carbon dioxide bubbles
form within the magma. This carbon dioxide then rises faster than the
magma and is released through cracks in the rocks. Many areas on or
near the crater floor may have large concentrations of carbon dioxide,
making these areas very dangerous to approach, as asphyxiation could
occur.

The increase in earthquakes and release of carbon dioxide from St.
Helens indicates that the magma chamber beneath the crater is probably
refilling. The refilling process leads the way for renewed magmatic
eruptions. The possibility of small steam explosions like those
between 1989 and 1991 has increased slightly over the past month.

 U.S.
*El Nino continues to be blamed for unusual weather phenomena. This
time a "freak late-season" rain has caused extensive crop damage in
California's great Central Valley. Nearly 100% of that area's
cotton crop has been destroyed as well as much of the cherry crop.

*A species of snail that is considered one of the worst agricultural
pests in California has made its way to Pennsylvania. Evidently
this little creature will eat practically anything "green
  and growing."

*Droughts drying up water levels in the Texas region could leave
farmers with as much as $97 million in crop losses this year.
Citizens are asked to conserve water.

[Update: projected agricultural loss due to continuing drought
is now estimated at $517 million.]

*75% of alfalfa crops in ND have been destroyed due to a "freak
June frost and snow." Honey output is also effected because
bees pollinate the alfalfa. No alfalfa, no honey.

*Vermont apple growers predict a bad season.

*Farmers in Florida and Georgia are worried about financial losses
due to the the springtime drought that has stunted crop growth.

*The state of Colorado has registered one of the driest Mays on
record, and water officials say weather patterns during the next
month or so will determine if water rationing is needed.

  Canada

*Quebec blueberry producers estimated that the region's economy
will suffer a $25 million loss due to the crop's destruction from
  freezing temps.

  Brazil

*Five million people in Brazil could face starvation as a result of
that nation's worst drought in 15 years.

  Malaysia

*Malaysia continues to suffer drought. Nearly 2 million people are
in their third month of water rationing. What little water they do
get is improperly treated resulting in a number of cholera cases.

  Madagascar

*Whoa! A 7 mile long swarm of grasshoppers in Madagascar? Farmers
are struggling to protect crops from this massive invasion.

  North Korea

*Tidal waves hit North Korea destroying farmland and crops. With
that area already experiencing famine, the flooding will make it
difficult to distribute food and supplies.

  Samoa

*American Samoa declared a state of emergency and started to
implement water conservation measures this month as a drought takes
  effect.

  Sudan

*The UN declared Sudan to be in a famine situation where 1.2
  million people face starvation.

  Taiwan

*Taiwan experienced flooding - estimated loss to farms and crops is
  $5.5 million.

  Cuba

*Cuba is facing a tense economic and financial situation made worse
  by a low sugar harvest.

  Fiji

*60% of Fiji's sugar cane crop has been destroyed by drought.

  Mexico

*Mexico is suffering its worst drought in 70 years, with crops
destroyed, thousands of cattle dead, and dozens of children dead
  from dehydration.

  Cambodia

*The UN World Food Program says some 200,000 people in southeast
Cambodia are facing severe food shortages due to prolonged
drought, and rampant smuggling of rice to Vietnam.

white bass have been found dead, while other populations of fish
  are unaffected.

*Polar bear cubs have been found in Norway that have both male and
female sex organs, a deformity which is possibly linked to
  increasing pollution.

*A "plague of mosquitoes" has hit a small remote village
in northwest China. A month-long blitz of pesticide spraying, that
have scientists worried of possible local ecological damage, is
  in the works.

*In the "Why do we make things so complicated?" department:
The Federal Endangered Species Act is protecting dead sea
turtles whose carcasses are rotting on Virginia beaches. Unless
you have a permit, you can't touch or remove them. The Virginia
Institue of Marine Science has a permit, but don't have the funds
for clean up. The turtles can weigh between 20-800 pounds.

*Health officials in AZ, CO, and NM are expecting large outbreaks of
hantavirus due to a boom in the populations of wild rodents.

*Campers and hikers were warned in a southern California wilderness
that two squirrels had been found that carried the bubonic plague.

*A family of grizzley bears killed and ate a Colorado hiker in
  Glacier National Park.

*Western Australian livestock is being stalked by one or more
  "killer cats."

*Potato salad from a Chicago catering service sickened 1,800 people.

*An E. coli outbreak in Wisconsin made 28 people sick. The bacteria
  was linked to cheese curds.

*Over 12 children have been infected with E. coli in Atlanta.
"We have a 98 percent certainty children defecating in the water

Editors Note:

Below are excerpts from a news story in Maclean's Magazine a very well
respected Canadian Magazine. The article was written by Peter C. Newman,
entitled "Warning of nuclear war before 2000."

Peter C. Newman, an award winning journalist, interviewed
one of Canada's wealthiest businessmen, Robert Friedland,
whose company is now headquartered in Singapore. Friedland's
purchases mineral finds in Asia and around the Pacific.

Here are his comments on the nuclear war looming between India and
Pakistan, the political and economic situation in Indonesia, and
the financial crisis in Japan.

At the end of the article, Friedland stated he felt these events were merely the
first phase in this millennial, biblical-scale series of tragic events.

***********

Nuclear War before 2000 between India and Pakistan.

- Looming nuclear war between India and Pakistan. Without a shadow of
doubt the there will be the greatest human confrontation in memory between
them, and soon, certainly before the year 2000.

- Pakistani prime minister Nawiz Sharif, announced the testing of his
country's nuclear bomb, he told his people the world will try to impose
sanctions on them, but "We have taken the path shown by Allah. "We have
jumped into the flames without thinking through our minds and calculating,
but going into a decision made by our hearts, the decision of courage."

- It would take 120 seconds between the time either India or Pakistan
launched a bomb and the moment of its impact.

- Jews and Muslim's are brothers compared to the profound hatred between
the two Asian rivals.

********

On Indonesia:

- Similar to the last days of Iran. Granted the shah was a vicious autocrat
and stole the national treasury blind, but he did create a middle class and
imposed order of sorts which turned into anarchy as soon as he lost power.
With Suharto gone, Indonesia is caught inexorably in a similar negative spiral
about two orders of magnitude worse than anyone can imagine.

- Revolutionaries are "cooking" the families of local Chinese merchants in
their cars -- ordering them into their vehicles at gun point, then setting them on
fire while people dance on the streets, watching them burn.

- Chinese control 80% of Indonesia's economy with four percent of the
population and face tremendous, horrendous hatred as the Jews did in
Germany.

- Terminal meltdown of the Indonesia economy is predicted.

- Indonesian currency has already experienced a 90% loss in value against the
U.S. dollar.

- No credible infrastructure in place to rescue the country.

**********

Japan and China:

* As the value of the Yen slides ever lower and banks continue to fail the
only rational solution will be to inflate the currency, so that Japanese
customers dig their savings from underneath their mattresses and start
spending again. But the very act of reinflating the economy will reduce the
value of the currency even further, perhaps as far down as being worth only
250 yen to the U.S. dollar. (it closed yesterday at 140.87 yen in New York)

* It would force China to revalue the exchange rate of its yuan which in turn
would set off another round of even more deadly devaluations throughout
Asia. "What we have seen to date, says Friedland, warming to the subject,
has been merely the first phase in this millennial, biblical-scale series of tragic
events.

Rabbis put curse on gay supporters

Copyright 1998 by United Press International
Wed, 24 Jun 1998

NEW YORK, June 24 (UPI) -- A group of Hasidic rabbis have gathered at
New York's City Hall to invoke a biblical curse on any city official
who votes for or promotes a proposed gay marriage bill.

The group of about two dozen men -- 10 makes a minyan or quorum --
used candles and a ram's horn known as a shofar to invoke the curse.
They also took some time out to pray for the safety of New Yorkers.

The protesters, clad in the Hasidic garb of long dark coats and black
hats, carried candles as they walked up the steps of City Hall.

The ceremony continued with the recitation of Psalms in Hebrew and the
reading of the Torah portion about Sodom and Gomorrah from the book of
Genesis and of prayers from the Rosh Hashanah, or Jewish New Year,
liturgy. The service ended when six men each blew a shofar.

Rabbi William Handler of Jews for Morality said city officials,
including Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who support the domestic partnership
bill will be wiped out, because they ``have no desire to repent.''

He said the group asked ``God to direct His wrath against the guilty
parties,'' and that ``our job is to save people.''

The City Council today passed the bill that grants spousal privileges,
like hospital and prison visitation rights and child care benefits, to
domestic partners 39-7.

The rabbi explained the significance of the biblical excerpt that was
read aloud -- the residents of Sodom and Gomorrah, cities that were
destroyed, ``enacted into law homosexual marriage contracts.'' He also
said that a minimum of 10 men had to attend today's demonstration,
because according to Bible, the two towns would have been sved had
there been a quorum of righteous men living there.

The form that the curse, which Handler said ``definitely'' will
materialize, will take has not been pinned down, but he said, ``It's
possible that an atomic attack could be made by Russia or China.''
