Hello everyone,
I was looking at a Space Calendar for this year
(http://newproducts.jpl.nasa.gov/calendar/) and saw the following:
Dec 14 - Asteroid 3288 Seleucus Closest Approach To Earth (1.439
AU)
December 14, 1998 is the beginning of Hanukkah--25th Kislev
(Feast of Dedication/Lights) which the Jews celebrate to commemorate
the victory over Antiochus IV, king of Syria (a king of the Seleucid
dynasty who sacrificed a pig on the altar--abomination of
desolation). Antiochus is considered to be a type of Antichirst and
it seems significant that an asteroid of the same family name is at
its closest approach to earth on the same day (I'm not sure how
close this is in terms of other asteroids).
Josephus claims that Antiochus' reign of terror starting with
sacrificing a sow on the altar he had erected to Jupiter (Zeus) in the
Temple, lasted for exactly three years, others say 3 1/2 years.
It's been about 2160 years since this festival was instituted
(around 164 BC). On that day: "...the Temple of Jerusalem was
solemnly purified, the old polluted altar removed, its stones put in
a separate place on the Temple-mount, and the worship of the Lord
restored. The feast commenced on the 25th of Chislev (December), and

While reading the second chapter of Ezekiel, I became
interested in the word "scorpions" in verse 6. I immediately
thought of the scorpions mentioned in Revelation chapter 9.
There is of course no direct prophetic link between the
scorpions mentioned in Ezekiel and those mentioned in
Revelation, i.e. Ezekiel's "scorpions" are not the same
scorpions in Revelation. It was the idea or meaning behind the
word and God's use of it that I found particularly interesting.
I'm speaking of that thread that runs from Gen. 3:15 right up to
the endtime when Jesus is crowned King of Kings and Lord of
Lords!
(Gen 3:15 KJV) "And I will put enmity between thee and the
woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy
head, and thou shalt bruise his heel."
"Many Christian commentators since the second century have
called this the Protevangelium (Lat.), the 'first preaching of the
gospel.' It has also been described as 'the Bible in embryo, the
sum of all history and prophecy in a germ.' It is a prediction of
continual hostility between good and evil, between man and
the satanic forces that oppose his moral well-being, and
between the people of God and the unregenerate world
system in which they live. This is more than a prediction,
however. Such conflict is said to be divinely caused. It is God's
will that until the final redemption, the Christian and the world
should not be at peace."

The following is just a lose collection of tid-bits dealing with
scorpions. They may or may not all be connected or
associated with each other.

(1 Ki 12:11 KJV) "And now whereas my father did lade you
with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath
chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with
scorpions."
The "scorpion" is a particularly cruel type of whip, "an
instrument of scourging ... with barbed points [pieces of sharp
metal] like the point of a scorpion's sting." - The New Unger's
Bible Dictionary.

God wasn't referring to a whip however when He warned
Ezekiel, although the pain could be as severe:
(Ezek 2:6 KJV) "And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them,
neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be
with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions: be not afraid
of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they be a
rebellious house."
So throughout the bible, the word "scorpion" has come to be
used as a metaphor referring to wicked or evil people getting in
the way of one's call by God. It can be terrifying when one day
you are all gung-ho to do the Lord's work, and then out of no
where comes a scorpion with a terrible sting. Ever been talking
about God to a friend or a co-worker, when a scorpion
slithers in? You spot them and immediately you know they
are going to heckle you, make fun of you, or say something
that will leave you looking like an idiot. This is a relatively mild
sting though. There are far worse scorpions that we can
encounter and they can be found most any place where God's
people are trying to do a work for the Lord. Ah, but we've got a
weapon of our own:
(Luke 10:19 KJV) "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on
serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy:
and nothing shall by any means hurt you."
So, let's get back to work....

Interesting little thing here that explained a verse to me:
(Luke 11:12 KJV) "Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a
scorpion?"
According to the dictionaries and commentaries, a scorpion
can have the appearance of an egg, "so much so as to be
with difficulty at times distinguished from it." - Easton's Bible
Dictionary

My study of scorpions naturally lead me to Revelation. In
reviewing the material, I came to realize just how God will "turn
the tables" so to speak during the endtimes. All throughout the
bible and even today, God's children have been attacked by
"scorpions" as Gen. 3:15 predicts. But in Revelation, we see
the scorpion's work isn't finished:
(Rev 9:3 KJV) "And there came out of the smoke locusts
upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the
scorpions of the earth have power."
(Rev 9:5 KJV) "And to them it was given that they should not
kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and
their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he
striketh a man."
(Rev 9:10 KJV) "And they had tails like unto scorpions, and
there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men
five months."

J. A. Seiss writes:
"The pain from the sting of a scorpion, though not generally
fatal, is, perhaps, the most intense that any animal can inflict
upon the human body. The insect itself is the mostmalignant
that lives, and its poison is like itself. Of a boy stung in the foot
by a scorpion (it was related that) he rolled on the ground,
grinding his teeth, and foaming at the mouth. It was a long time
before his complainings moderated, and even then he could
make no use of his foot, which was greatly inflamed. And such
is the nature of the torment which these locusts from the pit
inflict. They are also difficult to be guarded against, if they can
be warded off at all, because they fly where they please, dart
through the air, and dwell in darkness." (The Apocalypse, p.

and Zin, es-Sufah, by which there is an ascent to the level of
the land of Palestine.
"Scorpions are said to abound in this whole district, and hence
the name (Num. 34:4). It is called "Maaleh-acrabbim" in Josh.
15:3, and "the ascent of Akrabbim" in Num. 34:4."

military exploits. The image of human-faced scorpions derived
from nightmarish traditions from the East, and Mediterranean
zodiacs eventually applied it to Sagittarius, who was often
portrayed with long hair.* Although the image is not meant
literally, it draws on the most terrible, repressed images of that
culture's unconscious fears to evoke horror at the impending
judgments."

"The "hair like women" would be a more obvious allusion to
most of John's readers: everyone in the Roman Empire knew
that "barbarians" outside the Empire, unlike most people in
Greco-Roman society, had long hair. In the context of a military
invasion, the readers would immediately think of the Parthians
(or, in apocalyptic terms, perhaps the evil spiritual realities
behind them). By way of illustration, the reigning emperor
Domitian's father was reported_perhaps fictitiously_to have
joked about the Parthians' long hair in view of a long-tailed
comet portending his death."

* Parthians - "They are mentioned as being present in
Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:9). They were a
people of NW Persia (Iran) who lived in the general region SE
of the Caspian Sea. The ancient Parthians are called a
'Scythic' race and probably belonged to the great Turanian
family. Nothing is known of them till about the time of Darius
Hystaspes, when they are found in the district that so long
retained their name. They appear as faithful subjects of the
Persian monarchs. Herodotus speaks of them as contained in
the sixteenth satrapy of Darius. In the final struggle between
the Greeks and Persians they remained faithful to the latter,
serving at Arbela; but they offered only a weak resistance to
Alexander when, on his way to Bactria, he entered their
country. In the division of Alexander's dominions they fell to the
share of Eumenes, and Parthia for some time was counted
among the territories of the Seleucidae. About 256 B.C.,
however, they revolted and, under Arsaces, succeeded in

endeavouring to sting in the heel a mighty man who is
struggling with a serpent, but is crushed by the man, who has
his foot placed right on the scorpion's heart.
"The Hebrew name is Akrab, which is the name of a scorpion,
but also means 'the conflict,' or 'war.'
"The Coptic name is Isidis, which means 'the attack of the
enemy,' or 'oppression;' referring to 'the wicked that oppress
me, my deadly enemies who compass me about' (Ps. 27:9)."

The Shoemaker-Levy Comet Sign
"A few years ago, the comet called Shoemaker-Levi broke into
probably 21 pieces and crashed into the planet Jupiter. Prior to
this event, astronomers speculated wildly about what effect
this would have upon Jupiter and indirectly, upon the earth.
The bombardment occurred over a five day period, beginning
on the 9th of Av on the Hebrew Calendar. (July 16-21, 1994)
"This is a day of great infamy in Israel. The Mishna, an ancient
Jewish commentary declares that when the spies gave the
report after returning from the promised land, the Israelites
turned against Moses, Joshua and Caleb on that day. (See
Numbers 14) It was on this day that both the first and second
temples (Solomon's - ~587 BC and Herod's - 70 AD) were
destroyed. At least five other disastrous events have been
noted as occurring on this very day, which have been very
hurtful specifically for the Jews.
"At the time of this remarkable event, Jupiter was in the sign
Libra , popularly represented as 'The Scales,' or, perhaps
more likely, 'The Light.' The adjacent constellation, Scorpio,
'The Scorpion' was also involved. The area of the sky where
Jupiter was located during the bombardment is pictured as
where 'the scorpion' is attempting to seize 'the light.' The
scorpion is probably symbolic of Lucifer, whose name means
'light bearer' or his agent, the anti-messiah.
"Jupiter is the King planet, symbolic of the King of Kings - the
Jewish Y'shua HaMoshiach and possibly also symbolic of the
12 tribes of Israel. The exact number of pieces of the comet
which slammed into Jupiter is uncertain. Either 21 or 22, I'm not
sure anyone knows the exact number. Twenty-one has been
noted (Don Kistler) as being the number which means 'the
exceeding sinfulness of sin.' Twenty-two is the number of
letters in the Hebrew alphabet, and also signifies Light/Making
Manifest. For either number, the meanings are extremely
relevant when considered along with the symbolism of the
celestial bodies involved in the incident, the area of the sky in
which it occurred and the history of the date of occurrence.
"The comet's assault upon Jupiter in Libra beginning on the
9th of Av tells an intriguing story! Indeed, as noted in
Deuteronomy 31, heaven is bearing testimony against those
responsible for misleading their own people and keeping them
from acknowledging their true Messiah.

down to the bed. I felt like I was choking and my throat burned

'Communion' which is significant. Streiber says, 'It showed me
its hand, its face, every detail of its body and then asked me to
describe its feet, and leaned forward against something that I
could not see and raised the foot. It appeared almost like a
very simple version of a human foot - instead of toes there was
a solid structure split only in one place....Beyond the face I was
able to see the figures back, the size of its head, its arms,
hands and feet and also its abdomen - every part of its body.
Under close scrutiny the surface was smooth it did not seem to
have a layer just under the skin - it was tight across the bones.
The structure of the knee and elbow joints reminded me of the
knees of grasshoppers and crickets. The hands were very
long and tapered and composed of three fingers and an
opposable thumb. When pressed down, the hands became flat
- suggesting they were more pliable than our hands. On the
fingers were short, dark nails with a more claw-like appearance
than ours. Overall this did not occur to me to be a highly
developed body but rather a very simple one. There was a
general lack of complexities which suggested few veins and
not much flesh and many of them, they call them the greys -

I was reading an editorial by Rowland Nethaway (senior editor of the
Waco Tribune-Herald) today, entitled "A national data base can get
scary." He states "America's deadliest terrorist [McVeigh] even
believed that a tiny chip encoded with his personal data had been
implanted in one of his buttocks before he was discharged from the
Army...It sounded paranoid and goofy, but not long ago Pentagon
officials talked about replacing dog tags with tiny chips encoded
with personal data under the skin of service personnel. The data chip
could speed up the identification of troops killed in action and help
doctors treat wounded soldiers and sailors...Something like a
portable bar-code reader could retrieve a soldier's name, rank,
serial number, medical history, religious affiliation, next of kin
and other information."
I have heard of MARC and other card-type things for military
personnel but this is the first I have heard of implantable chips.
Has anyone else read this anywhere else?

country under the title "Lilith Fair."

INFANTICIDE REPORTED IN DOLPHINS -- Bottlenose
dolphins have now received the distinction of being the first of
the dolphin-porpoise-whale group accused of killing youngsters
of their own species. A research team in Scotland and another
in the U.S. say that young dolphins found on the shores were
probably pummeled to death by adult dolphins. The
researchers cannot tell which adults attacked or why.
However, carcasses of youngsters have shown a "specific
and consistent pattern" of injuries typical of dolphin attacks,
including broken bones, ripped tissue and bruised organs. In
1996, Scottish researchers reported that 60% of harbor
porpoises found dead on the northeast coast appeared to be
killed by dolphins. To identify the killers, teeth marks seen on
some of the corpses were compared with mammal jaws in
museums. Since then, people have caught some attacks on
video, in which small groups of dolphins chase a porpoise and
ram their beaks into it hard enough to toss it into the air. When
out of the water, massive twisting injuries -- including blubber
and muscle ripping away from bone -- occurs. The attackers
make no attempt to eat the victim, losing interest once the
porpoise is dead. What prompts the attacks remains a
fountainhead of speculation. The attacks on dolphins less than
a year old -- injuries from which are the same as seen earlier
with porpoises -- have spawned numerous theories. One is
male infanticide, in which a potential suitor approaches a
female that already has a youngster. Killing the calf might bring
the female into a receptive state much sooner. Dolphin studies
have shown that females become fertile within 1 to 2 weeks of
losing an infant. Whatever the cause, the attacks are
becoming more frequent. In 1997, a Virginia Marine Science
Museum researchers found more than four times as many dead
young dolphins as was found in 1994, raising the possibility of
a boom in infanticide. (Science News)

Sun Jul 26 , 1998 -- A mysterious illness that sent hundreds of
thousands of people into a trance-like state in 1920s could be
about to break out again. The claim is contained in the BBC
science programme, QED, to be broadcast next Wednesday.
The disease, called Encephalitis Lethargica, leaves its victims
mentally intact but damages the area of the brain responsible
for movement. Sufferers take on the image of living statues
and can remain motionless and speechless for many years.
Sleepy Sickness, as it is also known, was thought by many
doctors to be an illness from history, but now new cases are
starting to appear in British hospitals. Dr Stavia Blunt, from
London's Charing Cross Hospital, said she has seen four
patients with presumed Encephalitis Lethargica in the last four
years. "Perhaps there are more cases around than we think. I
suspect that they are going misdiagnosed," she said. It
affected people in bewildering ways. Some fell into a deep
sleep - a bride was reported to have fallen asleep on the way
to her wedding and never woke again. Others became violent,
excitable or were driven mad by hallucinations. In 1928, the
disease apparently disappeared.
Professor John Oxford, , who leads a team of virologists at the
Royal London Hospital, is studying brain samples saved from
the 1920s. He believes "there will be another massive
outbreak of influenza sometime in the near future... I certainly
do not think the outbreak [in the 1920s] was a one-off. I
wouldn't be surprised at all if there were succeeding outbreaks.
And until we know what caused it, we can't plan things
properly."

Jordan excavates Christ's baptism site
AMMAN, Jordan, July 25 (UPI) -- Jordan's Department of Antiquities is
researching and excavating the place where Jesus Christ is believed to
have been baptized, ahead of an expected wave of tourism to the holy
land next year to commemorate 2000 years since the birth of Christ.
A department statement says it is working to excavate the area on the
eastern bank of the Jordan River ``around the clock to ensure the
protection of its sanctity and its surrounding environment in order to
open the area to all the peoples of the world to visit it before the
end of next year.''
The department archaeologists are also preparing the area where Jesus
is believed to have retreated in the wilderness for 40 days after his
baptism.
The department said the digging has so far led to the discovery of
ancient churches, mosaic floors and water systems.
The department added that its excavation teams have also found the
route of Christian pilgrims hundreds of years ago, which starts in
Jerusalem.
The route passes through the Jordan River and ends in Madaba, 30
kilometers south of the capital Amman, where an ancient church with
560 A.D. Byzantine mosaic floors maps out the holy land.
Near Madaba is Mount Nebo, where Moses is believed to have lived his
last days and was buried.
Jordan expects hundreds of thousands of tourists and Christian
pilgrims to visit the sites in Jordan in December 1999 and is
preparing a campaign under the slogan of: ``From Bethlehem to Bethany
-- Beyond the Jordan from Birth to Baptism.''

Tycoon to leave half fortune to Catholic Church
following pact with God
DUBLIN, July 26 (AFP) - Welsh-born tycoon Albert Gubay, one of the
richest men in Britain and Ireland, plans to leave half of his huge
wealth to the Catholic Church as part of a pact he made with God.
Gubay, 69, who made fortunes from supermarkets in Britain, Ireland,
New Zealand and the United States, is now based in Dublin and the Isle
of Man.
Estimated to be worth 275 million pounds (456 million dollars), Gubay
will reveal his extraordinary "50:50 deal with God" in a
previously-recorded Irish radio programme, "Ever Ancient, Ever New,"
to be broadcast Thursday.
Born in Rhyl, Wales, to an Irish Catholic mother and a Jewish father
who fled from persecution in Baghdad, the millionaire "leans towards
the Catholic faith" and is a regular mass goer.
His belief in a "day of reckoning," he told the programme, keeps him
"on the straight and narrow" -- and he claims he enjoys giving things
away.
He has already provided the cash to build three Catholic churches,
including one in the home town of his mother near Dublin.
Programme producer Michael Cleere said Gubay had not indicated to them
any details of how he plans to will the money.
Gubay, who is setting up a chain of fitness centres in Ireland,
explains his pact in the context of the biblical message, "It is
easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich
man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven."
"We wanted to talk to a rich man about his thoughts on getting into
Heaven," Cleere said.
"After the war he came out of the British Navy with a demob suit and
80 pounds. He started off by borrowing 100 pounds, and he said that
when he was penniless he made this pact with God, that if God helped
him to become a millionaire he would split it 50:50.
"When I asked him about his fortune, he would not be drawn and nor
would he specify about how the money would be distributed - whether it
would be the Irish or English Catholic church or Rome or whatever. He
just said he was giving it to the Catholic Church," Cleere said.
Gubay, who is refusing to give interviews before the programme is
broadcast, made his fortune with the no-frills Kwik Save chain of
stores in Britain that he sold in 1973.
He then set up the 3 Guys supermarket chains in Ireland, New Zealand
and the United States, and also sold them.

Transplant doctors in Louisville, Kentucky say they plan to transplant
a human hand from a dead person to a living person who lost the limb
because of an accident or disease.
The doctors are searching for candidates for the operation they hope
to perform by the end of the year. They say they expect that operation
will be controversial.

SPEEDWAY DEFENDS CONTINUING RACE AFTER DEATHS
The president of a Michigan race track is defending the decision to
continue Sunday's CART U.S. 500 competition after three spectators
were killed and six injured in the stands by debris from an accident
on the track. The driver was not badly hurt.
Some fans say they were shocked the race continued after the deaths at
the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.

Hi There,
I haven't been on the bpr-list very long but I wanted you to know that
I am really enjoying your correspondence. I've learned a great deal.
Most of what you have been looking at in the bible has been exactly
what I've been teaching on. (What a great God we serve!) I'm a pastor
of two, small home church groups. We have been studing Romans in one
group and the book of Revelation in the other. However, Holy Spirit led
"rabbit trails" have had both groups jumping around to follow topics.
It is always so exciting to teach those who are hungry for the word.
Has there been a study of "Daniel's seventy weeks" lately? Please
enter this suggestion as our vote for the new study topic. But
whatever you decide will be food for the hungry. May God continue to
bless the ministry in which He has you.

We did a study on Daniel chs 10-12 when the list first started,
but nothing exclusively on the seventy weeks. This would be
Daniel ch 9 then that mostly deals with the seventy weeks,
correct? I'll add it to the list...
