Dan 9:24
"Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people..."

WEEKS

Strong's #7620
shabuwa'; or
shabua'; also
shebu'ah; properly passive participle of 7650 as a denomination of
7651; literally sevened, i.e. a week (specifically of years):--seven,
week.

7650
shaba'; a primary root; properly to be complete, but used only as a
denominative from 7651; to seven oneself, i.e. swear (as if by
repeating a declaration seven times):--adjure, charge (by an oath,
with an oath), feed to the full [by mistake for 7646], take an oath,
x straitly, (cause to, make to) swear.

7651
sheba'; or (masc.)
shib'ah; from 7650; a primary cardinal number; seven (as the sacred
full one) also (adverbially) seven times; by implication a week; by
extension and indefinite number:--(+ by) seven ([-fold]), s, [-teen,
-teenth], -th, times). Compare 7658.

7658
shib'anah; prolongation for the masculine of 7651; seven:--seven.

SEVENTY
7657
shib'iym; multiple of 7651; seventy:--seventy, threescore and ten (+
-teen).

7 sevens
62 sevens
1 seven

Can the sevens be split or does this disqualify them from being a
seven? For instance can you take the last seven and split it into 3
1/2 and 3 1/2 or does it have to be a complete block of the full
seven? I've seen some explanations that cut that last week in half. I
can see some time elapsing between the blocks of sevens, but what
about in the block itself?

I personally find that a "seven" can not be split or have a gap.
The whole Jewish system and way of life was based upon the number
seven, i.e. the week of seven days, the Jubilees, the Sabbaticals,
the feasts, etc. Now as you pointed out, we do see a gap between
periods of sevens, e.g. as the gap between the 69th and 70th week.
I've been putting together events that have occurred in 490 year
cycles, and from that we definitely see "stops" or "gaps" in God's
prophetic clock. I have not come across nor can I think of an
instance when a period of sevens has been "put on hold." Anyone
else?

Actually, based upon the root meaning of "seven" I don't think it
can be split.

"The Hebrew word for seven comes from a root word that means to be
full, to be satisfied. It's also related to the word meaning to
swear, to make an oath. Whenever the Lord sevens something, He's
reminding His people that what He says and does is complete and
dependable. Nothing can be added to it." ("Be Holy," Warren
Wiersbe).

Bullinger further explains: "In the Hebrew, seven is shevah. It is
from the root savah, to be full or satisfied, have enough of. Hence
the meaning of the word 'seven' is dominated by this root, for on
the seventh day God rested from the work of Creation. It was full
and complete, and good and perfect. Nothing could be added to it or
taken from it without marring it." ("Number in Scripture," pgs
167-168)

God didn't stop or rest in the middle of this seven day period. He
waited until the work was complete.

That doesn't mean though that periods of time within the seven year
period aren't distinguishable, for when the bible talks about a
certain amount of time within the seventh year its called either
1260 days, or 42 months, or time, times, and a half- time, etc.

Hello all (is anyone out there?),

I took the different definitions of the words from Strong's and came
up with the following:

Seventy
weeks/sevens
are
determined/cut off/decreed
upon thy
people/tribe/troop [Israel]
and upon thy
holy/sacred place or thing
city/encampment/post [Jerusalem]
to
finish/restrict/hold back/prohibit
the
transgression/revolt/rebellion/apostasy
and to make an
end/close up/seal
of sins and to make
reconciliation/to cover (spec. with bitumen)/expiate/condone/
     placate/cancel
for
iniquity/perversity/evil
and to bring in
everlasting/concealed/vanishing point/eternity
righteousness and to
seal/close up
up the
vision/sight/dream/revelation/oracle
and prophecy and to
anoint/rub with oil/paint/consecrate
the
most
Holy/sacred place or thing [Holy of Holies?]

I'm in the process of finding out what all the different words mean
in Daniel 9:24-27. To see what I've got so far goto:

Hi guys...

This doesn't directly have anything to do with what we are
studying right now, but I came across this segment and thought I
would share it before I lost it or forgot about it. It should bring a
smile to your face. <g>

---------

(Dan 12:4 KJV) But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal
the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro,
and knowledge shall be increased.

"After reading this passage many years ago, the great scientist
(and Christian), Sir Isaac Newton, is reported to have said:

"'Personally I cannot help but believe that these words refer to the
end of the times. Men will travel from country to country in an
unprecedented manner. There may be some inventions which will
enable people to travel much more quickly than they do now.'

"This was written around A.D. 1680. Newton went on to
speculate that this speed might actually exceed 50 MPH. Some
80 years later, the famous French atheist, Voltaire, read Newton's
words and retorted:

"'See what a fool Christianity makes of an otherwise brilliant man!
Here a scientist like Newton actually writes that men may travel at
the rate of 30 or 40 MPH. Has he forgotten that if man would
travel at this rate he would be suffocated? His heart would stand
still?'

"One wonders what Voltaire would have said had he known that
some two centuries after he wrote this, an American astronaut,
Edward H. White, on June 3, 1965, would climb out of a
spacecraft a hundred miles in the sky and casually walk across
the continental United States in less than 15 minutes, strolling
along at 17,500 MPH? Or that during the moon landings, man
exceeded a speed some 12 times faster than a 22-caliber rifle
bullet travels?"

     Hallo,

I'm now a few weeks reader of the BPR-list and I want to tell
you that I enjoy the mail.

I want to let you know that I live in Belgium, and our land has
always been a forerunner in forming the Europian Commom
Market. This year in october everyone in Belgium will have
received his own personal SIS-card = Social Information
System Card. This SIS-card sounds as the sound of the snake!
We will have to have it with us as we go to work, so that the
goverment -social inspection service- can control if everybody
on the job pays his social taxes. We need it to go to the docter
or the hospital or if we want to buy medicyn. Tax control can
ask this card to see if you have been sick in the last year and
that you had an income of social security. If you are going to
look after a job, the employer can ask for that card and find
about your health. The whole thing started in 1981 and in 1990
the goverment decided to start the 'Crosspointbank'. A central
controling system that controls all systems, the healthservices,
the retirementfunds, the unemployement and childcare. Even
financial banks are related with the system. Now october 1998
they know how to run it for 100%. No other country's in Europe
have this system operating. Other country's in Europe -like
Holland- even Europe, are setting up the same system and
take Belgium as an example. Belgium was and is already a
forerunner in electronic banking. I thought you would like to
know what happens in the capitol center of Europe, Belgium,
Brussels.

Greetings

Jesus is Lord !

*** Texan pays lab $5 mln to clone his pet dog

A Texan millionaire is paying a cloning laboratory $5 million to
produce a living replica of his pet dog Missy, according to a BBC
program. The laboratory has already received some cells from the dog,
which is part collie, part Alsatian, Newsnight said Monday. The
cloning laboratory of Texas A&M University at College Station had been
given two years to produce a clone. Laboratory Director Mark Westhusin
said he thought other millionaires would be keen to follow suit. "I'm
sure there are lots of them out there that would if they knew the
potential existed to do it," Westhusin said. Newsnight said other
laboratories and companies were hoping to move into commercial cloning
of pets and racehorses. (Reuters)

Embassy in Jerusalem?

Weekend News Today Source: Washington Times (Embassy Row)

Mon Aug 24 , 1998 -- Two congressmen have introduced a bill to force
President Clinton to build a U.S. embassy in Jerusalem if he wants
money to build one in Berlin. The bill is sponsored by Reps. H. James
Saxton, New Jersey Republican, and Brad Sherman, California Democrat.
The measure is an attempt to make Mr. Clinton comply with a 1995 law
that calls for the embassy in Israel to be relocated from Tel Aviv to
Jerusalem by 1999. Mr. Clinton, who opposes the move, has used a
provision of the bill to delay the relocation on national security
grounds. "The [new] bill sends a strong message to the people of
Israel that the United States is committed to Jerusalem as the eternal
capital of a strong and secure Israel," said Esther Levens, president
of the National Unity Coalition for Israel.

Stones from the skies

Weekend News Today Source: BBC

Mon Aug 24 , 1998 -- Meteors and comets have been worshipped for
centuries In Turkmenistan, the fall of two meteorites within a month
is being seen as a holy happening, causing a flurry of interest in the
small desert state. The latest fell on a village just over 100km from
the site of the first, reportedly crashing through the roof of a
house. News of the second meteorite, which fell at the end of July, is
only just emerging as villagers refused to report the incident. They
believed the small object from the skies, weighing about a kilogramme,
to have religious significance. It has been taken to the capital,
Ashkhabad, for study by scientists. The second "holy stone" follows
the fall of one of the largest individual meteorites in history -
weighing 820 kilogrammes - near a spiritual site in eastern
Turkmenistan. The BBC Central Asia Correspondent, Louise Hidalgo, says
Turkmens hailed its arrival near the old capital of the ancient state
of Khorezm as an auspicious event as it coincided with the sixth
anniversary of the election of their leader, President Niyazov.
Witnesses who saw the meteorite fall spoke of a bright light and
tremendous noise, and earth tremors which were felt up to a 100km
away. And the meteorite, now on show in a museum, is to be named
"leader of the Turkmens" in honour of the president.

An open letter to Hillary
by
Bob Barr (R., GA.)
Member of Congress

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/exclusiv/980824.open_letter_to_hill.html

Dear Mrs. Clinton:

In February 1974 the staff of the Nixon impeachment inquiry issued a
report produced by a group of lawyers and researchers assigned with
developing a scholar memorandum setting forth the "constitutional
grounds for presidential impeachment."

You were a member of that group of lawyers and researchers, barely, I
am sure, able to conceal your dislike for President Nixon. Within the
year, Nixon would leave office disgraced , having witnessed articles
of impeachment voted against him by the House Judiciary Committee,
based in part on your report.

Relevant Today

I must give you and your colleagues credit. You did not appear to have
let personal animus influence your work product, at least not the
final, published report. In fact, the report you and your colleagues
produced appears objective, fair, well researched and consistent with
other materials reflecting and commenting on impeachment. And it is
every bit as relevant today as it was 23 years ago.

I presume -- but I must ask whether -- you stand by your research and
analysis today. You said in 1974 that impeachment, as understood by
the framers of our constitution, reflected the long history of the
term used at least since late-14th-century England: "one of the tools
used by the English" to make government "more responsive and
responsible" (page 4 of your report). You also noted then -- clearly
in response to those who mistakenly claimed impeachment as a tool to
correct "corruption in office" that "alleged damage to the state," was
"not necessarily limited to common law or statutory ... Crimes" (page
7)

You quoted James Wilson, who at the Pennsylvania ratification
convention described the executive (that is, the president) as not
being above the law, but rather "in his public character" subject to
it "by impeachment" (page 9)

You also -- quite correctly -- noted then that the constitutional
draftsmen chose the terms describing the circumstances under which a
president could be impeached very carefully and deliberately. You
noted that "high crimes and misdemeanors" did not denote criminal
offenses in the sense that prosecutors employ such terms in modern
trials. Rather, in your well-researched memorandum, you correctly
noted that the phrase "high crimes and misdemeanors" was substituted
for George Mason's less precise term in an earlier draft of the
Constitution: "Maladministration" (page 12 of your report). Not only
that, but your further research led you to quote Blackstone's
"Commentaries on the Laws of England" in support of your conclusion
that "high crimes and misdemeanors" meant not a criminal offense but
an injury to the state or system of government (page 12). I applaud
the extent and clarity of your research. You even note that the U.S.
Supreme Court, in deciding questions of intent, must construe phrases
such as "high crimes and misdemeanors" not according to modern usage,
but according to what the framers meant when they adopted them (page
12 once again).

Magnificent research!

Even Alexander Hamilton finds a place in your research. You quote from
his Federalist No. 65 that impeachment relates to "misconduct of
public men, or in other words, from the abuse or violation of public
trust" that is "of a nature ... POLITICAL [emphasis in original]"
(page 13 of your report).

Finally, in bringing your research forward from the constitutional
drafting documents themselves, you find support for your properly
broad interpretation of "high crimes and misdemeanors" in no less a
legal scholar than Justice Joseph Story. I was in awe of your use of
Justice Story's "Commentaries on the Constitution" (1833) supporting
your proposition that "impeachment ... applies to offenses of a
political character ... [that] must be examined upon very broad and
comprehensive principles of public policy and duty" (pages 16 and 17
of your report). I could not have said it better.

You even note that the specific instances on which impeachment has
been employed in our country's history "placed little emphasis on
criminal conduct" and were used to remove public officials who had
"seriously undermined public confidence" through their "course of
conduct" (page 21).

Clear Basis

Mrs. Clinton, when I first raised the notion last month that the House
should take but the first step in determining whether impeachment
might lie against President Clinton for a pattern of abuse of office
and improper administration of his duties, little did I realize your
scholarly work 23 years ago would provide clear historical and legal
basis and precedent for my proposition.

Amazingly, the words you used in your report are virtually identical
to those I use today. For example, you said in 1974, much as I did in
my March 11, 1997, letter to Judiciary Chairman Hyde, that
"[i]mpeachment is the first step in a remedial process" (page 24 of
your report) to correct "serious offenses" that "subvert" our
government and "undermine the integrity of office" (page 26).

Thank you, Mrs. Clinton, for giving Congress a road map for beginning
our inquiry.

Sincerely,
Bob Barr (R., GA.)
Member of Congress

Conversation With the Pope

By Lally Weymouth

Monday, August 24, 1998; Page A19

CASTELGONDOLFO, Italy-Even Pope John Paul II wanted to know the latest
news about President Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. On vacation at his
summer palace, which is located about 40 minutes from Rome, the pope
asked at the beginning of lunch for an update on the U.S. political
situation. He then inquired if the American people still support their
president.

While Clinton was testifying about his tryst with Monica, the pope was
holding a small two-day seminar of intellectuals and statesmen to
discuss one of his favorite topics: the upcoming millennium. Among
those present at this elite event were Zbigniew Brzezinski, former
U.S. National Security Advisor; Bronislaw Geremek, Poland's foreign
minister; and Bernard Lewis, a leading expert on Middle Eastern
history. Krzysztof Michalski, a Polish philosopher who is also the
director of the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna, organized the
conference for the pope.

Although the pope is officially on vacation in August, he's an
intellectual and a philosopher, and thus it interests him to listen to
leading statesmen and scholars deliver papers and discuss the topic,
"Time and the Millennium." The 20 or so scholars assembled daily in a
small room in the pope's palace. They sat around a U-shaped table,
while the pope, dressed in white robes and wearing a large gold cross,
listened, sitting at a separate desk.

Although John Paul II is reported to be in the twilight of his papacy
and in poor health, I and others at the conference found him more
alert and in better health than he appeared at a similar conference
four years ago.

Then, it was time for lunch. The pope's dining table was set with a
white linen cloth and napkins.

"Welcome", said the pope in English when he entered the room. He said
a prayer and sat down. What are his plans for the year 2,000 -- the
year that Catholics call the "Jubilee Year"? He said that there will
be Catholic synods -- gatherings of Catholic ecclesiastical
dignitaries -- in America, the Caribbean, Asia and in Siberia.

During the millennium year, the pope said he plans to retrace the
footsteps of Abraham by traveling from Ur, Iraq, to Sinai, then on to
Jerusalem, ending up in Damascus -- where the conversion of Saint Paul
took place. In Jerusalem, he said he would like to meet with
representatives of the two other "Abrahamic" religions -- Judaism and
Islam.

Despite the unsettled situation in the Middle East, the pope revealed
that both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian
Authority President Yasser Arafat have invited him to visit in the
year 2,000. The pope said that he has accepted their invitations.
"They know it is a project of the pope to be there," he added.

Last January, the pope visited Cuba. How does he assess the strength
of the Cuban regime? "Castro's preparing for a soft landing," he said.
What did he mean by that? He said he believes that Castro is planning
to stay on.

Many Americans have asserted that this pope -- born in Poland --
played a key role in undermining communism and helping to end the Cold
War. The pope didn't discount this theory. He merely observed, "I am
confident in Providence, and Providence uses its instruments. Maybe
one of them is the pope."

John Paul II recalled Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev's visit to
the Vatican in 1989 -- just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. That
same year the pope held a conference at Castelgondolfo -- similar to
the one he convened this year -- at which Geremek and other Poles
watched developments in Poland. The pope started these conferences
back in 1985 to give intellectuals from behind the Iron Curtain a
chance to meet their Western counterparts.

Today, the pope observed, "Russia is a big problem. They've become
accustomed to living under a dictatorial regime . . . " and thus,
change is a problem. The pope noted that when Russia's President Boris
Yeltsin visited the Vatican in February of this year, he said he was
doing everything he could to change Russia. According to the pope,
Yeltsin was optimistic.

The pope believes that Russia has two options: either to turn its back
on Europe or to collaborate with it. He's inclined to believe that
Russia will orient itself toward Europe.

Turning to the subject of Ukraine, the pope said, "Ukraine should
attain its independence." But he outlined the consequences to Russia,
explaining that "without Ukraine, Russia can't be a superpower."

It was observed that the major growth in the Catholic Church is taking
place outside Europe and the United States. Without missing a beat,
the pope said, "It was so at the beginning."

This pope has done much to improve relations between Catholics and
Jews -- including opening formal relations with Israel in 1994. He
proudly noted that he told the rabbi of the synagogue in Rome, "You
are our elder brother."

Presently, an irritation in Jewish-Catholic relations has been caused
by the crosses some Christian groups have placed at the death camp,
Auschwitz, where Nazis killed thousands of Jews. I asked if the pope
planned to further good feelings between Jews and Christians -- which
would have to include some action on Auschwitz.

"What do you think?" said the pope, smiling. A Polish official told me
that his government is waiting for a decision at an upcoming
conference of bishops. The bishops are expected to call for the small
crosses that have been placed at Auschwitz to be removed -- but not
the large cross that commemorates the death of some Polish citizens at
the death camp.

One hopes for a new chapter between Jews and Christians, said Ira
Katznelson, a Columbia University professor. The pope nodded and
repeated Katznelson's words, "a new chapter."

A bishop then said, "The press conference is over." The pope, a
stranger to the press, seemed to like this line. As he left the room,
he repeated, "The press conference is over."

*** Global meltdown poses nightmare scenario for U.S.

As Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin enjoys a last week of summer
vacation, a nightmare scenario is threatening to unfold for the
global economy that could be beyond the reach of U.S. policymakers.
The financial crisis that started in Asia last year once looked
manageable, but analysts warned Monday it may turn into a global
epidemic. Billions of dollars in international emergency aid have
failed to contain the turmoil. There is hardly an emerging market
left that has been spared. Russia's economy is crumbling fast, and
now Latin America threatens to become the next victim. "This is a
serious global emergency," said Greg Mastel of the Economic Strategy
Institute, a Washington-based think tank.

Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks,

Wiersbe notes that the event that started the period of 490

allow the Jews to go back to Jerusalem and rebuild their city
(Neh 2:5). The event that will trigger the start of the last

DAN 7:9-10 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of
days did sit (for Judgement), whose garment was white as snow, and the hair
of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and
his (its) wheels as burning fire. A fiery stream issued and came forth
from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand
times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books
were opened.

There can be no other discernment but to say that The Lord Of Hosts'
Throne was set up for Judgement.

DAN 7:11 I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the
horn spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed,
and given to the burning flame.

     Horn, being a corporate leader with eyes and mouth like a man;

     Beast being a government;

     Body being the government's land mass;

-----

Moreover, I solemnly tell you that The Lord Of Hosts then instructed
Jesus to go out conquering, and to conquer, His own Kingdom; Just as
He told the Jews, to do so.

All of which is described in Revelation 6:1, 6:12-17, and in 9:1-2,
     et al.

DAN 7:12 As concerning the rest of the beasts (governments), they had
their dominion (Authority) taken away: yet their lives (existences) were
prolonged for a season and time.

DAN 7:13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man
(Jesus) came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days
(The Lord Of Hosts), and they brought him near before Him.

DAN 7:14 And there was given him (Jesus) dominion, and glory, and a
kingdom, that all
people, nations, and languages, should serve Him (Jesus): His dominion
(Authority) is an
everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that
which shall not be destroyed.

Now, notice that in Revelation 16:15, which is obviously describing a time
just prior to the Destruction of the fourth kingdom (babylon), which is
described in chapters 17 and 18: Jesus is STILL saying that He WILL
come like a thief in the night. To wit:

REV 16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. (as in, I WILL come) Blessed is
he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they
see his shame.

REV 16:16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew
tongue Armageddon.

Now, notice that the next Scriptures describe the Destruction of the fourth
kingdom, by fire. And, also notice, that Jesus has STILL not returned
to earth.

REV 16:17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and
there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne,
saying, It is done.

REV 16:18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there
was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so
mighty an earthquake, and so great.

REV 16:19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities
of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to
give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

REV 16:20 And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

REV 16:21 And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone
about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague
of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.

Now, notice that AFTER the utter Destruction of the fourth kingdom, who's
utter Destruction is then elaborated on in chapters seventeen and
eighteen: In Revelation 19:6, for the first time, it is very clearly
said that THE LORD REIGNS.

Therefore, based on nothing but undeniable Scripture, IMMEDIATELY AFTER
the fourth kingdom is Destroyed by God Almighty, Jesus Returns to earth.

Therefore, everything that is described in the Book of Daniel beyond the
end of chapter seven, is, by unquestionable necessity, happening during
the Reign of Jesus Christ.

And, the fourth kingdom, which by these same Scriptures, cannot be Rome,
Because Rome was not Destroyed in this manner; Nor, did Jesus Return to
earth immediately after Rome's destruction by fire.

There's alot more, but not enough space in this particular message.

Yours in Christ,
BANDS

Silicon chip implanted into arm of UK scientist; Experiment first of
its kind

Weekend News Today Source: BBC

Tue Aug 25 , 1998 -- A silicon chip has been successfully implanted
into the arm of a UK scientist. The experiment, believed to be the
first of its kind, means a computer can keep track of the device and
its carrier. The chip has been inserted in Professor Kevin Warwick's
upper arm. The professor, from the University of Reading, in England,
is taking part in the experiment to highlight some of the dangers of
the technology. The technology itself is not new. Silicon chips are
already used in many countries to identify animals. A digital reader
can pick up a unique code for the device which is placed under the
skin. The chips can be used to reunite lost pets with their owners and
identify animals which have received vaccinations for certain
diseases. The implant in Professor Warwick's body is more
sophisticated. Sensors can be set up to pinpoint his location and even
switch on lights automatically when he enters a room on campus. But he
says the real reason for having the chip inserted was to demonstrate
the sinister side of the pushing the frontiers of technology forward.
"There are positive sides and negative sides - postive in helping
people around big building, negative are the big big brother issues -
machines or computers controlling humans," he said. He says that if
their use became widespread we would never enjoy anyprivacy and could
be followed and identified wherever we went. Professor Warwick's
device, which will be removed after a week, carries 64 pieces of
information. But they could also be used to carry personal information
such as bank details or credit ratings. "If we look to the future,
compared with what this small chip contains now, in five or six years
time the amount of information and the amount of processing
capabilites will be enormous," Professor Warwick said. Criminal
offenders and even babies can already be tracked using electronic
tagging devices attached to their body, the next step could be to
implant silicon chips instead.

Hello Everyone...

Just a few impromptu thoughts here, based on this evening's news, and
happenings over the past week, or so.

Did anybody happen to notice that the very same day our president
appeared before the grand jury, and then admitted on national TV to
his scandal; that the Russian president cut his vacation short in
order to "come home" and devalue the ruble 30%. Considering that the
scandals of this presidency seem to be designed to cover up what's
"really going on" ...these two events somehow almost seem
"deliberately planned." ???

Now, it appears that our "valiant" Commander-in-Chief may have bombed
some innocent targets, to the great "anger" of the Russian leadership.

Tonight's news...the ruble has devalued another 10% And commentators
on CBS were calling the Russian dilemma a "pre-revolutionary
situation." And another said something about communism falling
"peacefully" but that the seemingly imminent economic collapse would
be "explosive."

I was never very studious in history classes in school. But I do seem
to recall that when Russia has upheavals, the whole world trembles.

Now, take a reading of Ezekiel 38-39. We are all, I'm sure, familiar
with Gog (and friends) devising "evil plans" (38:10) to attempt to
anihilate Israel. Anybody know what the "reason" is?

"..in order to take a spoil, and to steal a prize.." (38:12)

Desperate people do desperate things! War has always been known to
bolster economies. Add to this, the list of Gog's "friends" (38:2,3,5)
...that's the bunch that's been itching for an excuse and timing to
push Israel into the Mediterranean. Get the "big bear" with related
goals to help out...and, there you have it. After all, they've got
Russia's old nukes, military gear and advisors anyway.

Oh, and...by the way...notice that our mighty "warrior" (no cynicism
here!! well...not too much!) is scheduled to visit Russia soon.
'Wonder what they're planning!! Notice vs.13 doesn't say that Sheba,
Dedan, Tarshish and Lions fight them, but they question them. The
British prime minister was shown to be in favor of the recent missile
attacks. So, get a few more terrorist bombings, and a few more cruise
missiles from "commanders" gone awry (on all sides) and one of those
missiles finds the "fuse" that explodes the region... and we've got
Ezekiel 38-39 being fulfilled "real soon" folks.

"Therefore you also be ready..." (Mt24:44)

Are YOU ready?

Solar eruption causes geomagnetic storm on Earth

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Solar winds blowing at more than a
million miles per hour hit the Earth's magnetic field on Wednesday,
sparking what U.S. government scientists say could be a
significant geomagnetic storm.

The U.S. Geological Survey said charged particles from a solar
eruption hit the Earth's magnetic field around 3 a.m. EDT (0700
GMT) and the resulting fluctuations in the field could cause power
outages, satellite failures, disruption in communications and the
aurora borealis.

Auroras are usually seen only in northern latitudes, but may
become visible in the continental United States during this
geomagnetic storm, the agency said.

While auroras are not as dramatic at mid-latitudes, they have
been described in the past as resembling city lights in the sky, but
in green, blue, and sometimes, red.

A severe magnetic storm in March 1989 caused the collapse of
the Hydro-Quebec power system in Canada, leaving about six
million people without power.

The U.S. Geological Survey operates 13 magnetic observatories
throughout the United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Guam and Puerto
Rico that continuously monitor the Earth's magnetic field.

Global Intelligence Update
Red Alert
August 27, 1998

"Deal With Me, Or Deal With Zhirinovsky"

On Wednesday, August 26, as the Russian economy teetered
near the edge of total collapse, newly reinstated Prime Minister
Viktor Chernomyrdin unexpectedly flew to Ukraine for
emergency meetings with Ukranian President Leonid Kuchma,
Belorussian President Alexander Lukashenko, and
International Monetary Fund Managing Director Michel
Camdessus. Before he departed for the Crimean,
Chernomyrdin reportedly met in Moscow with Russian
Communist Party leader Gennadi Zyuganov, Russian Liberal
Democratic Party leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky, and Krasnoyarsk
Governor Alexander Lebed. While Chernomyrdin was
scurrying between meetings, Russian President Boris Yeltsin
was nowhere to be found, until it was eventually revealed that
he was working from his country home, 60 miles outside of
Moscow. The question: What did Chernomyrdin hope to gain
from his sudden trip to Ukraine that warranted leaving crisis-
ridden Moscow in the care of acting Deputy Prime Minister
Oleg Sysuyev?

The latest phase in Russia's collapse began last week, when
the government of then Prime Minster Sergei Kirienko
announced both that it would let the ruble fall from 6.3 to 9.5 to
the U.S. dollar by the end of the year, and that foreign debt
payments by commercial banks would be frozen for 90 days.
Last Sunday, President Boris Yeltsin fired Kirienko, replacing
him with former Prime Minister Chernomyrdin, whom he had
fired only five months previously, just prior to selecting Kirienko.
Whatever Yeltsin's motives were in choosing Chernomyrdin,
his selection did nothing to calm the situation either inside or
outside of Russia. The general consensus was that the
new/old Prime Minister was a non-starter. The financial
situation continued to deteriorate, reaching new lows on
August 26 when the Central Bank halted trading on the
Moscow Interbank Currency Exchange and annulled the day's
trading of the ruble.

It was in this crisis atmosphere that Chernomyrdin held
separate meetings with Zyuganov, Lebed, and Zhirinovsky.
Zyuganov is the head of the Communist Party, the largest party
in the Duma, and a leader with a large and growing following.
Lebed, who was head of the national security apparatus
before being fired by Yeltsin, is a nationalist leader who draws
on his record as an airborne general. He speaks for
substantial numbers of non-communist nationalists.
Chernomyrdin needs the Communist Party's support for his own
confirmation in office and for the success of his economic
plans. He needs Lebed's support to win over the fractious
nationalists. However, Chernomyrdin's meeting with
Zhirinovsky had multiple purposes.

Zhirinovsky's Liberal Democrats, with 51 seats, are the third
largest party in the 450 seat Duma, after the Communists' 157
seats and Chernomyrdin's own "Our Home is Russia" party's
55 seats. The only other parties with more than 9 seats are
reformist Grigori Yavlinsky's Yabloko party, with 45 seats, and
the Russian Agrarian Party, with 20 seats. While Chernomyrdin
needs Zhirinovsky's support for his confirmation as Prime
Minister, Chernomyrdin's meeting with Zhirinovsky also
intended a psychological effect.

Zhirinovsky, while head of the third largest party in the Duma,
is more notorious for his outrageous statements and
extraordinary antics. His political base grew out of a heavy
metal music shop, and he delights in visiting such global
pariahs as Moammar Khaddafi. By treating Zhirinovsky on the
same level as Zyuganov and Lebed, Chernomyrdin may have
been trying to tar the Communist and nationalist leaders with
the Zhironovsky brush. By saying that his political opposition
consisted of the three, he may have been trying to signal that
the alternative to his government was not a stable coalition of
Communists and nationalists, but an unstable, fascist regime
with expansionist fantasies. In other words, he was signaling
that the choice was between him and chaos.

Who was he signaling? Certainly not the Russian public, who
are not likely to panic at the symbolism. Rather, the audience
was Michel Camdessus, the IMF and, through them, Western
financiers. By meeting with Zhirinovsky before flying off to
meet with Camdessus in the Crimean, he was trying to drive
home two points to the West. First, that the Yeltsin regime was
tottering and might fall. Second, that the follow-on regime was
likely to be much less stable and rational than Westerners
might expect. In other words, if the IMF, looking at Yeltsin's
impotence, thought that they might be better off dealing with a
Zyuganov-Lebed regime, which at least had some real popular
support, they had better think again. Along with them, the IMF
and the West would get Zhirinovsky and the return of the Cold
War.

The second audience was the Ukranian government.
Camdessus had been dealing with the Ukranians, who were in
far better shape financially than the Russians. Chernomyrdin
was reminding them that events in Moscow will shape events
in Kiev. In other words, if they make a deal with the IMF which
takes care of their needs, without a comparable IMF deal with
the Russians, they would be facing a new government in
Moscow, one that would include Zhirinovsky. For good
measure, Chernomyrdin brought along Alexander Lukashenko,
President of Belorussia and a man with deep nostalgia for
Brezhnev. Ukranian President Kuchma was invited to see the
future.

Chernomyrdin is desperately shouting, "apres moi, le deluge,"
trying to convince the West and Ukraine that they can't afford
to let him fail. In playing the Zhirinovsky card, he may have
concerned his audience, but it is unlikely to panic them.
Yeltsin scares them quite enough.

The IMF cannot bail out Russia, and Western banks will not
bail out Russia. Ukraine is not in a position to underwrite loans
to Russia. Chernomyrdin is posturing to an empty theater.
What is interesting about all this is the length to which
Chernomyrdin feels he must go to get attention. Also
significant is the fact that he no longer has many options.
Zhirinovsky is a fascist, but he is not going to be included in
the government. The issue is not whether or not there will be a
government of national unity including communists and
nationalists, but how many ministries Yeltsin will be able to hold
on to.

One threat, however, is real. The new government will
radically redefine Russian foreign policy. The West will look
back with nostalgia on the 1992-1998 period. Unfortunately,
there is nothing the West can do to save this corrupt and failed
reform attempt. Even if he was frightened by Zhirinovsky,
Camdessus cannot save Chernomyrdin and Chernomyrdin
cannot save Yeltsin. The deluge is not coming. It is here.

Hello all,

When Gorbachev left Russia he said "I'll be back." Is it now time for
him to return?

==========
... in the Christian newsletter, "Prophecy In The News", November,
1989..."before the Russian revolution in 1917, Gorbachev's family
name was spelled GOGRBACHEV". Remember God's prophecy in Ezekiel
38-39, that Russia would invade Israel in the last days and be
destroyed at God's hand? Ezekeil 39:1 clearly states, "Behold, I am
against you, O Gog, chief prince of Rosh, of Meshech, and Tubal". In
Ezekiel 38:2, God states, "...set your face against Gog, of the land
of Magog". Bible scholars have repeatedly shown that the "land of
Magog" is modern Russia. Gog is their leader. Wouldn't it be just
like God to cause the leader of Russia at the time of the invasion to
have GOG as part of his name? We do, indeed, serve a mighty God!!

-The (Open) Rise to Power of the Russian Right-

Along side underhandedly creating war in and around the Middle
East, it would be strategic for Moscow to instigate political
turmoil and possibly civil war in Russia before launching an all-out
attack. From such chaos, Moscow could stage an open rise to
power by Russianneo-facists, more commonly referred to as the
"Russian Right".

If, indeed, the East has been pursuing a grand deception over the
past several years, then it is likely that Gorbachev's rise to
power in 1985 entailed a dramatic ideological shift to the
political right rather than the left. At first this may seem hard to
believe, but, indeed, going into the 1980's, it was
well-recognized that a shift to the right was taking place at the top
in the SovietUnion {for instance, see: Alexander Yanov's, 'The
Russian Challenge and the Year 2000'}.

The Russian Right is the ultimate form of facism. It is
centered around an ideology that paints Jews and Westerners as
satanic elements conspiring to overtake Russia and the world.
Consequently, Russia has a messianic calling to wage a merciless
war against Israel and the West before the world is
completely controlled by evil "zionist" (Israeli/Jewish) and
  "freemasonry" (Western/liberal-democratic) forces (purportedly
by the year 2000). Through this war Russia will fulfill its destiny
of saving (dominating) the world and establishing a global kingdom
of god (dictatorship of man). The pseudo-Christian underpinnings
of the Russian Right brought about a strong alliance between Rightist
elements in the government and leaders in the Russian Orthodox
Church. In other words, with the emergence of the Russian Right,
the ideology surrounding Russia's historical messianic complex
 shifted from Communism to Orthodoxy.

There were numerous indications that Gorbachev led a rise to power
by the Russian Right. First off, Gorbachev's background in the
Komsomols (Young Communists) involved participation in anti-semitic
activities under Stalin. It was these anti-semitic programs
which were the roots from which the Russian Right emerged
{especially in the context of Young Guardism}. Since
Gorbachev eventually became a leading figure in the Komsomols, there
is reason to believe he was involved in the emergence of the
Russian Right. His remarkably fast rise into the Politburo
under Brezhnev (Gorbachev was only 50 when he entered the Politburo
whereas the average age of a member was over 70) indicates he was
tied to an extremely powerful movement which, at that time, would
have most likely been the Right. During the 1970's, the Russian
Right was seeking to bring about a top-down revolution. By
achieving power at the top, the neo-facist ideology of the
Russian Right could be spread downward to the people. This is
 exactly what happened under Gorbachev.

Soon after Gorbachev came to power and initiated his policy
of Glasnost, or openess, the neo-facist ideology of the Russian Right
began to be introduced to the Russian people through
supposedly grassroot organizations which were, in fact, created
and financed by the KGB. Probably the ultimate example of this is
 an organization called 'Pamyat'.

Pamyat was underhandedly created by the Soviet government and
the KGB supposedly as an independent organization devoted to
renovating and restoring Russian monuments, museums, historical
sights, and Orthodox Churches. Quickly, however, it
transformed into a leading front for the spread of Russian
neo-facism. Pamyat and its activities under Gorbachev could be
tied to the KGB, high-level elements of the Soviet military,
and the Central Committee of the Central Party of the Soviet
Union (CPSU). In fact, there were indications that Yegor
Ligachev, Gorbachev's right-hand man, and Raisa Gorbachev,
Mikhail's wife, were directly involved with Pamyat.
Furthermore, in 1987, Gorbachev's closest Politburo ally, Boris
Yeltsin (!), held an extraordinary meeting with Pamyat leaders.
Following this meeting Pamyat was permitted to use government
buildings for meetings and other activities- an
unprecedented privilege. Further indicating Pamyat's connection
to the government, at the 1990 Revolution Day parade in Moscow's
Red Square the military and police kept all groups of demonstrators
at least a mile away from the parade area except for Pamyat.
Furthermore, that year Gorbachev appointed two people to his
13-member presidential council who were believed to be members of
Pamyat. One of those individuals, Valentin Rasputin,
advocated that Russian Jews ought to be tried collectively for
the murder of Jesus.

The linkage between Pamyat and the Soviet power
structure indicates that the Russian Right came to power with the
rise of Mikhail Gorbachev, but an open rise to power by
Russian neo-facism and an apocalyptic war launched against the West
will likely be carried out by a Vladimir Zhirinovsky. Vladimir
Zhirinovsky is the leader of a party misleadingly called the
Liberal Democratic Party. He was recently quoted as saying: "I am
the Almighty. I am the tyrant. I will follow in Hitler's
footsteps." His purported goals are the same as
Pamyat's, including the restoration of the Byzantine empire of the
East.

Zhirinovsky is evidently an agent of the KGB. A
recent outside investigation of the 1990 August coup in Moscow has
uncovered documents and evidence which establishes direct links
between Zhirinovsky, the KGB, and the CPSU under Gorbachev.
Furthermore, the evidence indicates that the Liberal Democratic
Party effectively does not exist. Since Zhirinovsky supposedly
received six million votes and came in third in the Russian
presidential elections won by Yeltsin, the indication is that
those elections were, in fact, a fraud. Overall, the
indication is that Zhirinovsky is KGB and Gorbachev and
Yeltsin are involved in an unprecedented, global-scale deception.

It appears that Zhirinovsky was created to carry out the dirty work
of the Russian Right. He could prove to be the key player in
launching an all-out Russian attack against the West. To understand
how and why this is so one must first consider the 1991 August coup
 in Moscow.

There is good reason to believe that the August coup in the
Soviet Union was a staged deception. To understand why, simply
consider that, during a 'hardline' coup in the largest military
dictatorship in world history, it would be unlikely that the
supposed main opposition- Boris Yelstin and his counterparts- would
go unarrested or unkilled. It is outright absurd to believe
that this opposition could get away with making speeches and rallying
popular support to undo the coup in the streets of Moscow. Yet,
this is supposedly what happened. Realistically, however,
the main opposition would be the first thing to go in a hardline
coup involving the strategically-minded KGB and Soviet military.
All in all, the August coup may have been nothing but a deception
and Mikhail Gorbachev, Boris Yelstin, and the rest of the
'ex-communist', 'ex-Soviet' leadership, have always been and will
likely always be 'hardliners' whose intent is world domination.

The 1991 coup had a notable peculiarity which may portend
a future, bogus coup which Moscow may be planning to stage prior
to launching an attack against the West. Following the August
coup, the Soviet press emphasized how Gorbachev's 'briefcase' fell
into the hands of the supposed hardliners who threw the coup. This
briefcase reportedly carried the codes which are used to launch
the Soviet Union's nuclear missiles. In other words, it was made
clear to the world how the coup could have led to a nuclear war
 launched by radical hardliners.

Prior to launching a third world war, it would be strategic
for Moscow to stage a rise to power by the Russian Right. First
off, such a move would be necessary to maintain the consistency
of the overall deception. Yeltsin's Russia, like Gorbachev's Soviet
Union, has been painted as progressive and peace-oriented.
Thus, prior to launching a war, Russia would want it to appear that
radical hardliners are in power. This way the world won't pick-up on
the overall deception that's been underway or the premeditated
 nature of Russia's attack.

By maintaining the overall deception, Russia's 'true' leaders will
be able to sidestep blame and, more importantly, they'll eventually
be able to achieve popular world control. Following an all-out
offensive against the West and military campaign to dominate the
world, Russia would want to stage a bogus 'return' to power by
what have been made out to be progressive, peace-oriented
leaders- especially Mikhail Gorbachev. This way military control of
the world can be reinforced by popular control. Instead of
realizing how Gorbachev and his associates were responsible for world
destruction, people will believe these leaders saved the world from
 ultimate destruction by Russian extremists.

It seems clear that Vladimir Zhirinovsky is the
openly neo-facist, hardline leader that Moscow is planning to bring
to power for launching world war three. The stage is being
set so that his rise to power parallels Hitler's rise to power in
the Weimar Republic of Germany during the 1930's. Over the past
couple of years, Russia has been transformed into a what's supposed
to be a fledgling democratic nation with no democratic
heritage suffering from increasing political and economic
disintegration. This, of course, was what the Weimar Republic of
Germany was like. Now, a neo-facist dictator, Vladmir Zhirinovsky,
can be carried to power out of popular frustrations. This, of
course, was how Hitler found his way to the top. Once
Zhirinovsky's is supposedly placed in charge, possibly through some
sort of bogus palace coup against Yeltsin (keep in mind it is all
staged and Gorbachev, Yeltsin, and the powers that be are simply
engaging in large-scale political deception), he then can be used to
launch a world war; again, 'following in Hitler's footsteps'.

The reason that Moscow would stage a shift to the right in a
manner which parallels the rise of facism in Germany during the
1930's is that it makes the overall deception more believable.
Nevertheless, the connections between Gorbachev, Yeltsin, and the
Russian Right, as well as the connections between Zhirinovsky,
theKGB, and the CPSU as it were, make it clear that neo-facism
found its way into the Russian power structure long ago. What's
taking place at present and what occurs in the future has been
preplanned and is bogus.

That an open rise to power by the extreme right and
Vladimir Zhirinovsky will be used to make way for an all-out war
against the West is made clear by the super-belligerent threats
Zhirinovsky has been making. First off, Zhirinovsky is calling
for the forceful reestablishment of the pre-1917 borders of the
Czarist Russian empire. Furthermore, he has vowed to wage a third
world war against the West in Yugoslavia, the Caucuses, and the
Middle East. Lastly, and most importantly, Zhirinovsky recently
made his first international diplomatic trip. He went to
Baghdad, Iraq. Zhirinovsky has pledged to support Saddam Hussein
in waging war against Russia's and Iraq's common enemies of the West,
Israel, and Turkey. What is more, Zhirinovsky has stated that he
will not hesitate to use weapons of mass destruction in that effort.

                 SOME INTRIGUING GORBY QUOTES:

On Friday, October 25, 1996 ABC television commentator
Charles Gibson asked Mikhail Gorbachev the following
   question during an interview:

"It is an interesting paradox to so many Americans-
you are so honored throughout the world for
fundamental changes, but, I don't have to recite the
election results to you, in the last election you got
a very small, tiny percent of the vote. Why is
Gorbachev seen so differently outside Russia and
      inside Russia?"

   This was Gorbachev's response:

"Well, let's recall another example. Jesus Christ was
pelted with stones. He was blamed and condemned, and
then he was put with a bandit and they were taken for
execution. And when it was said that one of them could
be spared, the people said the bandit should be spared
      and Christ was crucified."

Here are some more recent quotes from Mr. Gorbachev:

"Communist ideology in its pure form is akin to
Christianity. Its main ideas are the brotherhood of all
peoples irrespective of their nationality, justice and
equality, peace, and an end to all hostility between
    peoples."

              (from Gorbachev's new book- 'Memoirs')

"The socialist tradition....goes back to Jesus Christ,
    not (Karl) Marx."

                 (USA Today, October 28th, 1996)

"Jesus Christ, he was also a reformer. He was pelted
    with stones and insulted."

(New York Times, October 25th, 1996)

The excerpt below is from Reuters World Service, December 8,
   1996, Sunday, BC cycle:

HEADLINE: FEATURE - "Vital Gorbachev refuses to let go of
   politics"

(Gorbachev) is frank, though hardly contrite, about the
failures of judgement that led him to promote to senior
positions the very men who would plot to overthrow him in
    1991.

"How do you explain Judas -- right there next to Jesus
Christ?" he asks. "How do you explain that? And Christ
did not recognise him for what he was. You could say
    that's a metaphor."

Yeltsin resignation reported

Russian President Boris Yeltsin, his country's
economy threatening to
self-destruct, has reportedly signed resignation papers and
will step down within
          three days.

Yeltsin will apparently leave when Viktor Chernomyrdin,
whom Yeltsin has just
reappointed as prime minister five months after firing him,
is officially in place.

Yeltsin's aides are said to be meeting today with
government leaders to ensure
          that he won't be prosecuted.

Reaction to the latest news from Russia sent the U.S. Dow
Jones industrial
average into a tailspin this morning -- it was down more
than 350 points in early
trading, but began climbing up again. Yeltsin's resignation
is seen as no guarantee
that Russia will regain to financial and political
stability.

Russia's economic troubles for months seemed confined
within its boundaries --
though vast numbers of workers went unpaid, the Russian
ruble held its
          worldwide value. Not so now.

The ruble has plunged, and for the second straight day,
Russia's central bank
today suspended sales of U.S. dollars and all other foreign
currency trade, trying
to keep within the country at least money that retains its
worth. Russia's
          economy is verging on collapse.

With prices skyrocketing in Russia and wage-less workers
hard-hit, intense
pressure had been building for the resignation of President
Boris Yeltsin --
``viewed as a spent force by U.S. officials,'' the Wall
Street Journal said today.

Stock markets around the world reacted to Russia's troubles
by sliding
downwards. The Dow Jones industrial average closed 79.30
down Wednesday.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei stock average fell 1.4 percent --
Japan's continuing
financial crisis added to global fears.

Prognosticators quoted by the Wall Street Journal say the
U.S. Federal Reserve
Bank may cut interest rates in an effort to deal with the
crisis, though such a cut
wouldn't happen soon. Some economists warn that global
deflation or recession
          lie ahead.

ARAFAT'S HEALTH QUESTIONED
Media analyst David Bedein told Arutz-7 today that his trip to
     Oslo
afforded him a close-up view of Arafat's deteriorating physical
condition. Bedein said that he is used to hearing Arafat speak "loudly
and bombastically. But this time, he spoke very softly, looking at
his prepared script the whole time." After Arafat finished his
speech, Shimon Peres helped him down from the podium. "At that
point," Bedein said, "I walked up to Arafat and asked him why he did
not condemn the recent murder of Rabbi Shlomo Ra'anan in Hebron. He
clasped my hand, his lips started quivering, and his whole body
started trembling. He didn't say anything, and a few of his aides
shuffled him off in the direction of the bathroom."
Later, at a press conference held by Arafat, Bedein confronted
     him
regarding the anti-Israel incitement broadcast on children's programs
on official PA television. "He couldn't hear what I was saying, nor
could he hear many of the other reporters' questions. Even after my
question was conveyed to him by his aide he didn't understand what I
had said. He started muttering something about the number of children
in schools in Judea and Samaria. Then his aide responded for him,
trying to make it appear as if Arafat himself had answered the
question. I am convinced that in the past few months, he suffered a
stroke which has seriously impeded his functioning," Bedein stated.

Aug 28, 1998 - Russia's woes rattle world stock markets

It's a bear market for stocks worldwide today, with the economic
and political turmoil in Russia fueling fears that sent the U.S. Dow
Jones industrial average into its third-steepest nosedive ever.

The Dow was down 357 points at closing on Thursday, and
volatility continued today. After an early rally brought it up by 43
points, the Dow began to slide again, down by 80 points in the
late morning.

The troubled market in Japan posted its lowest closing in 12
years, and other Asian markets also plunged. European markets
were also showing early losses today.

All this as Russian President Boris Yeltsin returned to Moscow
from a rural break and struggled to get some kind of grip on the
chaos in his country. Today, he fired the country's two remaining
Western-style economic reformers. CBS reported that Yeltsin had
signed a letter of resignation, undated, that could take effect at
some point after Viktor Chernomyrdin is confirmed as the new
prime minister on Monday. But in late morning, the White House
said that Yeltsin is now vowing to stay in office until his term ends
in 2000.

Spokesmen for President Clinton said he's going ahead with plans
for a two-day visit to Russia next week, and will meet with Yeltsin
even if the Russian leader is planning to resign -- unless Yeltsin
himself calls the meeting off.

Russia's millions face extreme hardship now that their country has
essentially run out of money. The government is all but bankrupt
after six years of mismanagement following the collapse of the
Soviet Union. Western governments will continue to press Russia,
though, to continue efforts to create a market-based economy in
the former communist country.

The U.S. Defense Department says it has no reason to believe
there is any problem with Russia's command or control of its
22,000 nuclear warheads. But world armaments watchers are less
confident. ``Given the disastrous state of things in Russia, we'd be
foolish not to worry,'' former military-intelligence officer Ralph
Peters told the Wall Street Journal. ``They're sloppy, they're
starving, they're stupid, they're mean, and they do maintenance
with sledgehammers.''
