Can Nature's Lion Lie Down With Religion's Lamb?

Copyright 1998 by Christian Science Monitor
Sep 30 1998

In 1992, scientists from 70 countries issued a warning: Earth's
environment is in such a grave state it demands the urgent attention
of religious leaders as well as politicians, scientists, and
educators. That call, says Mary Evelyn Tucker - associate professor of
religion at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa. - helped galvanize a
three-year exploration of world faiths and their views on the natural
world that will conclude later this month at the United Nations.

Past UN environment conferences revealed the need for a shared ethic,
and an Earth Charter is being drafted. The series of conferences
coordinated by Dr. Tucker and her husband, John Grim, seeks common
ground among faiths and other disciplines for altering our worldviews
and lifestyles. An academic discipline is being developed combining
religion and ecology.

The environmental crisis ``is also a moral and spiritual crisis,''
Tucker says, and with this effort, ``we are creating new modes of
being religious in the contemporary world.''

Since May 1996, conferences have been held on ecology and Judaism,
Christianity, Islam, indigenous traditions, Hinduism, Buddhism,
Taoism, Confucianism, Shintoism, and Jainism.

The recent interdisciplinary gathering at the American Academy of Arts
and Sciences here explored the relation of religious values to
environmental education, science, economics, and public policy. On
Oct. 20 and 21, culminating sessions about faiths and the environment
will be held at the UN and the American Museum of Natural History in
New York. The aim is to spur new alliances for transforming values and
practices, ``reinventing industrial society on a sustainable basis.''

Russian scientists want fireworks in space for year
2000

MOSCOW, Sept 28 (AFP) - Russian scientists have proposed a special
space launch to organise a high-altitude fireworks display to
celebrate the year 2000, a presidential official in charge of
millenium celebrations, Sergei Kortunov, said Monday.

A Kosmos rocket launched from Russia could create the light effects of
fireworks in space, according to a report by Moscow's aviation
institute.

The rocket could also parachute down five 100-kilogramme (220 pound)
detachable capsules full of presents for the residents of five world
cities on New Year's Eve or at Christmas.

Another project, dubbed the Star of Bethlehem, would use missiles and
satellites to create a multicoloured cloud in space whose light would
outshine the moon.

The launching of a Kosmos rocket -- which can also be loaded with a
nuclear warhead -- would cost around 12.5 million dollars, the daily
Sevodnya said.

Kortunov said a government commission will select the more interesting
projects presented. The presidential administration would do all it
could to help scientists find financial support.

Subject: The Confirming of the Covenant in Daniel 9

The Covenant

If chapter 9 is read as a whole, it is easy to see that Daniel was concerned about a specific covenant. Daniel prayed daily for God to remember His covenant and bring Israel out of heathen captivity. It should be remembered that Daniel was willing to face death at the mouth of lions rather than to cease praying for Jerusalem. He was the right man for God to reveal the future to. Daniel's prayer chronicles his confession of personal and national sins (A prerequisite for getting prayers answered)! He petitions this covenant-keeping God to turn away His anger (vs.16) and cause "Thy face to shine" (Second Advent). It is while he is praying that Gabriel shows up and informs Daniel that the covenant will be confirmed. To correctly interpret the prophesy in chapter 9, it is crucial to take the entire chapter into account. In the beginning of the chapter, Daniel speaks about the end of the 70 years desolation of Israel spoken of by Jeremiah the prophet. He refers to God as one who "keeps covenant":

And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant (emphasis mine) and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments; Daniel 9:4

It is inconceivable that in answer to Daniel's prayer Gabriel would speak of some other covenant than the one Daniel spoke of in the beginning of his prayer. When the angel says "and he shall confirm the covenant . . ." the most logical interpretation would be that Gabriel was referring to the same covenant Daniel had in mind when he prayed! Since the land had been desolate for seventy years, it makes perfect sense that Daniel was referring to the covenant that God made with Abraham in the book of Genesis. It had to do with land. It was the "Abrahamic" covenant. There are several scriptures that corroborate this view:

Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations; Deuteronomy 7:9

Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations; 1 Chronicles 16:15

He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations. Which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac; And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant: Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, (my emphasis) the lot of your inheritance: When they were but a few men in number; yea, very few, and strangers in it. Psalms 105:8-12

Standard teaching has Anti-Christ making a covenant with Israel to last seven years, which he will break in the middle of that seven year period. How that can be ascertained from Daniel 9:27 as it stands in the AV is a mystery. The covenant is obviously the one Daniel mentions in verse four. No one is making a covenant with any one. Someone is confirming one already in existence.

The facts above in no way preclude the Anti-Christ from making some kind of agreement with Israel. It is rather to be expected. After all, he is the "Anti" Christ. "Anti" does not always mean "against" but "in place of." The Anti-Christ is an "in place of" Christ. In other words, he is simply a perfect imitation - a "copy-cat". Scripture speaks of the league made with him in Daniel and Isaiah: As he also can "teach scripture" (2 Tim. 4:1) he has subtily convinced the fundmental element of Christianiy that he will confirm the covenant. It is something that he simply cannot do. It is beyond the range of his power. He can only pretend to do so, and has convinced everyone that he will!

And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people. Daniel 11:23

And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it. Isaiah 28:18

John speaks of him when he states:

I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. John 5:43

The error is simply mistaking that league or covenant with the covenant God made with the Patriarchs of Israel. Prophesy teachers are expectantly watching the continuing saga being played out in Palestine. They will be disappointed. The present day "Israeli-Palestinian agreement" hammered out in Oslo, Norway is not the precursor to Anti-Christ confirming anything.

Well, perhaps I can be of help to this author. <g> The covenant is
*not* obviously the one that Daniel mentions in verse four. Well, I
shouldn't be so adamant. Let's say that it's not obvious to me
anyway. <g>

The "he" in this verse is a bit difficult to determine as we know. But
there are a few points I would like to make in response.

In Daniel 9:27, the Heb. word for confirm is "gabar." It is normally
translated as "prevail" in the O.T. As a matter of fact, the only time
it is translated as "confirm" is in Daniel 9:27. According to my
Hebrew-Greek Key Study Bible, gabar is more "commonly
associated with warfare and had to do with the strength and
vitality of the successful warrior." If you do a word search through
the O.T. you'll find that the word is often associated with man's
strengths in battle or conflict. Sometimes you'll see it associated with
nature as in "the waters prevailed..." (Gen 7:18).

The word also carries the idea of "prevailing in a virile manner and
being arrogant about it." A word that is derived from gabar is geber
which refers to a "male at the very peak of his natural strength."

Another definition I found for gabar is from the New Commentary on
the Whole Bible which says: "this word is generally used in contexts
where an agreement is forced on someone by a party of superior
strength (Baldwin)."

Interestingly... look how God is presented in Isaiah --

(Isa 42:13) "The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir
up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yea, roar; he shall prevail
against his enemies."

Prevail in the above verse is gabar. But notice that it's associated
and used in a military sense as well and the strength is being
displayed in opposition to God's enemies. I believe that's important.

Look at Young's Literal Translation:

(Dan 9:27) "And he hath strengthened a covenant with many --
one week, and the midst of the week he causeth sacrifice and
present to cease, and by the wing of abominations he is making
desolate, even till the consummation, and that which is determined
is poured on the desolate one.'"

As a comparison, the article mentioned Psa 105:10 -- "And
confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an
everlasting covenant."

The word for confirm in this verse is amad [5975] and it is but one of
several Hebrew words that can be translated as "confirm." Daniel
9:12 uses another word for confirm as well. So when comparing
scripture, the English words may be the same, but the original
Hebrew words may be totally different and thus convey different
meanings. One of my favorite illustrations of this point comes from
John 21:15-17 where Jesus asks Peter do you love [agape] me?
Peter replied, "Yes Lord, I love you," but used the word phileo
instead of agape as Jesus had. Reading just the english words,
one misses what's truly going on those verses.

Looking at Daniel 9:27 and seeing that gabar is most commonly
used in a show of strength in military terms, it seems to naturally be
used that way here as well. If the confirmation comes on the basis
of strength, who then is doing the confirming? Is the original
covenant between God and Israel a military type covenant where
the word "gabar" would be used in this case, especially in response
to His own people?

Another point I would like to make has to do with grammar and
sentence structure. Normally in cases like this, the last available
antecedent is taken as the subject of the following verb. An
antecedent in grammatical terms is the word or phrase that has
been replaced by the pronoun in question. In our case, we want to
know who "he" is. Going backwards, the last available person that
could be a "he" is "the prince" of the people.

A third point: The "he" in question will "cause the sacrifice and the
oblation to cease." Using Antiochus Epiphenes as a type of anti-
Christ, and thus a preview of what Daniel 9:27 may be alluding to,
we see that he [Antiochus] put an end to the Jewish sacrifices as
an enemy of God. Can we anticipate that the "he" in Daniel 9:27
to do the same thing for the same reasons?

Just my take on the situation... <g>

Hi,

Are you saying then that it is antichrist who confirms the covenant? I wasn't
sure if that's what you meant. I think it is antichrist who does confirm the
Abrhamic covenant to Israel, but not as thouhg it was his rightful place to
do that. He is, afterall, the anti (in place of) Christ, and only Christ alone
can truly confirm the fulfillment of that covenant when He comes. Forgive me
if I've misunderstood you. I really would like commentary on this. Always
checking
out what I believe.

Hi Ed...

You wrote:

The original article questioned how one can ascertain from Dan
9:27 that the anti-Christ will "confirm" a seven year covenant with
Israel. I personally ascertain that, because the "he" in that verse is
referring to the anti-Christ. Was that not what the article was
saying? Perhaps I misread it and was thinking of something else,
because just a few days ago I saw a speaker on TV (I think the
show was Amazing Bible Facts, or something similar) talk about the "he"
in that verse doesn't refer to the anti-Christ but to *the* Christ.

I agree with ya that the anti-Christ doesn't have the right to do
anything. But he will do many things as though he does have that
right. Yep'um.. we agree on that. <g>

I don't know how you feel about using other translations, but every
translation that I have over here, except for the KJV, translates Dan
9:27 as "a covenant" and not "the covenant." Whatever article is
used however, doesn't alter my interpretation of the verse. If the
verse is referring to the HOLY covenant between God and Israel,
then the anti-Christ will acknowledge that covenant and
"strengthen" it or "confirm" it. The scenario plays out nicely in my
mind if that is indeed the case and would explain why Israel would
warm up to him. On the other hand, and because I feel that the anti-
Christ will first appear on the scene after a great show of military
strength, thus making Israel a bit nervous about her own future security,
the anti-Christ will make or confirm a treaty or an agreement with her for seven
years. Either scenario works for me.

Subject: News: Tearing Down the Mosque to Build the Temple
From: bpr-list@philologos.org(BPR)

From: "Moza" <moza@butterfly.mv.com>

[Saudi Arabia]: Al-Jazirah: Arabs Must 'Rescue' Jerusalem
           Riyadh Al-Jazirah in Arabic 24 Sep 98 p 7
Article by Rida Muhammad Lari: "Tearing Down the Mosque To
Build the Temple"

Israeli extremists deliberately timed their seventh annual congress
for Tuesday, 15 September 1998, at the premises of al-Ummah Building
in the western section of Jerusalem. Some 20,000 Jewish extremists
turned up for the occasion, among them top Israeli Government leaders.
Barely 2,000 Jews showed up for the sixth congress of 1997, with no
Israeli Government official attending. An air of secrecy has, since
the first occasion, been a hallmark of the proceedings and aims of the
congresses, with the sponsors of the gatherings only saying that these
were for religious Jews.

Just hours before this last congress was set to get under way, it
was announced that the real agenda of the group sponsoring the
congress was "the demolition of the Mosque and the construction of
the Temple." It opened with an address by Jarshon Solomon, head of
the extremist and racist "Qa'im Movement" in which he said: "I am
addressing myself not just to the audience assembled in this hall,
but to every Jew on earth because they all represent God's chosen
people, whether they are here in the Promised Land or outside of it.
It is our duty to evict the gentiles from Jerusalem so that the holy
city becomes purely Jewish."

Greeted with a storm of applause, Solomon went on to bark: "Rise to
the Temple Mount and tear down al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the
Holy Sepulcher. We do not want to hear any calls to prayer nor any
church bells to toll for non-Jewish prayers in the land of the Jews.

"It falls on the shoulders of this generation of Jews to sacrifice
their souls and money for the sake of liberating the land of the
Temple and purge it from filth and impurity in advance of our
rebuilding the Temple where only Jewish prayers should be conducted,
and if the gentiles should want to worship God let them do elsewhere
outside "the Promised Land"--the land set aside by God to the Jews
alone," declared Solomon. Thereupon some 1,000 Jewish youths rose to
their feet and pledged themselves to sustained work on behalf of the
demolition of al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in
Jerusalem, plus all non-Jewish houses of worship in the national
homeland of the Jews.

Responding to their pledge, Solomon rose again to state that as
things stood then there was an urgent need for action rather than
words. Go and fight the gentiles wherever you find them if you are
to recover the Promised Landin full with its Jewish character intact
and go on to bequeath it to the future generations of the Jews. That
is your fate, the children of this generation--to fight for the sake
of this nation so that your children and grand children may enjoy its
fruits.

The Jewish extremists' congress ended after three days of
deliberations and speeches. In the course of the conference,
Solomon had a message from the Israeli Prime Minister which read: "We
are on the side of your call forthe rebuilding of the national Jewish
home on the Promised Land, but the international circumstances for
now are such that we are well-advised not to rush intothe prosecution
of our grand Jewish objectives lest the world declare war on us. I
suggest that we begin with Islamic shrines and leave Christian ones
until later; if we concentrate on al-Aqsa Mosque we would have a
strong case seeing that it sits on the Temple Mount, and the brazen
hostility of the Muslims toward the State of Israel would give us
justification to wage war on them within the national home of the
Jews. If we should go ahead and demolish the Church of the Holy
Sepulcher and other Christian holy places now, that would turn the
entire world against us and, in view of the close ties that we have
with the Christian world, we lack the necessary justifications for
destroying the Christian shrines."

That letter by the prime minister of Israel, which amounts to a
damning document incriminating Israel, was made public by Solomon who
read it out to the congregation convened at the seventh congress of
the Jewish extremists. Solomon declared that "Qa'im Movement" had an
agenda that was completely different from that of the government
which he noted reckons with world circumstances and acts based on
political calculations and so could be right or wrong. On the other
hand, we conduct ourselves with the spontaneity of a religious
principle that decreed that all of Israel is the Promised Land and
that this principle is non-negotiable no matter what the difficulties
that we might encounter in our pursuit of that goal. This is because
we have resolved to champion our religion and pull down the houses of
worship of the gentiles and rebuild our Temple so that only Judaism
will reign inside Israel.

On Friday, 18 September, 1998, 'Ikrimah Sabri, the mufti of
Palestine, declared in the course of a sermon he delivered to
worshippers in al-Aqsa Mosque that action must be taken to rescue the
Mosque from aggression by the Jews and Jerusalem had to be set free
from Zionist occupation if plans to Judaize the holy city are to be
frustrated. 'Ikrimah Sabri drew the attention of his audience of
worshippers to the fact that the Jewish extremists whose congress
concluded the day before and which set out to promote the goal of the
destruction of al-Aqsa Mosque and the rebuilding of the Temple on its
ruins had sworn to execute their goal while this golden opportunity
while their control of Jerusalem lasted.

The Friday speech by 'Ikrimah Sabri was a mere reaction to the
proceedings in the Jewish congress and the declared intention of the
Jews to demolish al-Aqsa Mosque and rebuild the Temple. Given the
finite resources at the command of Jerusalem or Palestine, there is
no way these will be sufficient to counter the Jewish threat to
Islamic sacred sites. Authority and power are in the hands of an
extremist Israeli administration that will not stop at the commission
of crimes andwe know that under the Likud, which is in office now,
attempts were made to burn al-Aqsa Mosque and that there was a mass
slaughter of Muslim worshippers at al-Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron.

Previously and before Israel exposed its hostile attitude toward
other faiths insofar as what it calls the Promised Land is
concerned, Israeli governments had sought to explain such outrages by
filing bogus medical reports advancing the claim that whoever had
aggressed against a Muslim holy place was mentally unstable. Now,
however, there is concrete evidence of the intentions of the Jews.
It has emerged from the seventh congress of Jewish extremists that
the Jews will work toward the demolition of al-Aqsa Mosque and the
Church of the Holy Sepulcher, plus all other non-Jewish houses of
worship. Such acts of criminality on the part of the extremists
inside and outside of the State of Israel is now being characterized
by the Jews as a holy duty that must be performed by the new
generation of the Jews as an unavoidable fate and as a service they
have to deliver for their children and grandchildren.

It is the duty of Muslims around the world to bring that criminal
role, which enjoys the support of the Israeli state, to the attention
of the international community both at the United Nations and outside
of it. It is the duty of various Islamic forums to open channels of
communications with the Vatican to communicate to the Holy See
Israel's declared intention to tear down the Church of the Holy
Sepulcher in Jerusalem to which Christian pilgrims flock every year.
Such contacts with the Vatican could be the first step down the road
of a joint Muslim/Christian effort to halt the Israeli aggression
against the Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

Meanwhile, the Arabs are duty bound to air the calls made at the
seventh congress of the Jewish extremists to the widest possible world
audience to make the point that Israel, bent on committing aggression
on Jerusalem, is hardly qualified to be entrusted with the sacred
sites in Jerusalem, regardless of whether the city was its capital or
not. I fervently hope that we move as Muslims and Arabs lest we should
one day receive the nasty shock and surprise of the demolition of
al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the
reconstruction of the Temple of David as the leading Hebrew shrine in
Jerusalem after Palestine has been turned into the Promised Land.

I must say it loud and clear at the top of my voice that Jerusalem,
which houses holy places for Christians as well as for Muslims, is
under the threat of aggression by the Jews who now control the holy
city. If we move vigorously and forcefully enough the chances are
that we will save it and if we should tarry and ignore the dangers
looming over Jerusalem, we
will lose the holy city, this time forever.

Scientist says leonid showers worse than expected

Weekend News Today
By Andra Brack
Source: New Scientist

Sun Oct 4 , 1998 -- The leonid meteor storm that may light up
the sky when it strikes the Earth next month could pose a
bigger threat to satellites than astronomers had feared.
Astronomers are now bracing themselves for the next Leonid
storm, predicted to reach a peak around 17 November.
Communications and other satellites could be threatened by
the bombardment--and both NASA and the Russian Space
Agency have postponed launches until the danger has
passed. No one knows just how bad the damage will be.
Current estimates put the risk of a serious impact between a
meteor and a large satellite at about one in a thousand. Steel
says his study suggests that this "seriously underestimates" the
hazard. "If I am right, the economic loss caused by the Leonids
may be immense," he says. Steel's advice is not to rely too
heavily on satellite communication and navigation systems in
the coming month. "I would not depend for my life on the
Global Positioning System being fully functional on 18
November," he says.

Seven Korean doomsday cult followers found dead

SEOUL, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Seven South Korean followers of a
doomsday religious cult have been found dead in a burnt-out van,
state-run television said on Monday.
Korea Broadcasting System (KBS) said their bodies were
discovered on Monday in the town of Yangyang, 140 km (85 miles) east
of Seoul.
It said the dead were Woo Je-hong, a minister, and six
other followers of the Everlasting Life Church, one of dozens of
doomsday cults in South Korea.
KBS quoted Woo's sister as saying that Woo told her the
seven would travel to find a place to die for their belief.
A police officer told KBS: ``We are still investigating
the exact cause of the accident. We need to probe further to find
out whether they committed suicide or it's a murder case.''
The leader of the Everlasting Life Church was arrested for
fraud in 1993. Police say some of the church's followers have
disappeared.
In October 1992, thousands of disillusioned followers of
the Dami missionary church led by Lee Jang-rim awaited passage to
heaven as members of the chosen few.
Lee was jailed for a year for pocketing more than $1
million from his followers, who gave up their assets in expectation
of their trip to heaven.

Israel home to world's largest oil field?
U.S. expert plans massive drilling project at Dead Sea

By Kaye Corbett
Copyright 1998, WorldNetDaily

IRVING, TX. -- A $30 million, six-to-eight-month project to uncover
the world's largest oil field atop a salt dome at the southwest end of
Israel's Dead Sea, is expected to begin in early 1999, according to
respected Texas oil man, Harold "Hayseed" Stephens.

Until now, Israel's Islamic enemies have possessed nearly 75 per cent
of the world's oil reserves with Israel's supply only a fraction of
that. It's reported that Islamic nations such as Saudi Arabia, all
sworn enemies of the tiny Jewish state, have trillions of barrels
while Israel has only enough oil to supply itself for about one and a
half days and depends on other countries for the remainder.

Stephens, a one-time "hell-raiser" and former pro football quarterback
with the New York Titans, explained Israeli oil officials had approved
his lease in early September and drilling equipment would likely
arrive at the site early in the New Year.

Besides being an oilman, Stephens is an ordained minister and said the
drilling of Elohim Parezim #1 (meaning "Lord of the Breakthrough") in
the Dead Sea area could mean "the entire geopolitical system will be
changed forever."

The lease license is called Hesed, meaning "the God that keepeth
covenant for a thousand generations," and part of that license is the
Ness Carveout, named after the Texan's company, Ness Energy (Ness in
Hebrew means "miracle").

"God has it all orchestrated," explained Stephens, who spent Succot in
Israel and visited the Dead Sea site.

Stephens had planned to visit Israel in early June; however, he
claimed the Holy Spirit informed him to wait and let Israeli oil
officials come to West Texas.

On Friday, June 26, in a hotel at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport,
history may have been changed forever.

It was no ordinary corporate business meeting.

The Israeli delegation was led by Yossi Levy, director/president of
the Israel Oil Company, Inc., from Petach Tikvah, Israel and Haim
Tsuff, chairman of the board of the Israel Oil Company, who now lives
in Holland.

Astonishing geological and geophysical evidence led to the signing of
an historic agreement between Israel Oil Company, Inc., and Stephens'
"Christian-owned" company, Ness Energy, International.

It is believed that there are vast amounts of oil in the Dead Sea
region of Israel sufficient enough to free the nation from dependence
on foreign energy sources and from vulnerability to economic
"pressure" to give up land for peace.

After the June 26 meeting, Stephens received the lease from Israel and
then returned to Israel for his 55th visit.

Stephens has relied heavily on the Scriptures and prophetic words, in
addition to the supporting geological studies, during the emotional
roller coaster that's associated with the oil business.

The Dead Sea, once known as the Valley of Siddim, was in ancient
times, a beautiful, lush region filled with bubbly lakes of oil,
according to Genesis 13:10-11 and 14:10 with Jericho being its major
trading center.

Then came the dramatic destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and the
formation of the Dead Sea. (Genesis 19: 24-25, 28-29)

The Hebrew translation of Isaiah 45:3 reads: "I will shoot up to you
deposits stored in valuable dungeon-type containers, so that you will
know that I Am the Lord your God, who called you by name." However,
Stephens had his own version: "I will shoot up (Texas terms: I will
gush up to you) deposits (oil deposits) that are stored in the
valuable dungeon-type containers (oil traps) so that you will know
that I Am the Lord your God Who called you by name." It should be
noted, Stephens said, that in Isaiah 45, God is talking to a Gentile,
King Cyrus. He also explained that in Isaiah 60:5, "because the
abundance of the sea shall be turned to you, the wealth of the
Gentiles shall come to you."

Stephens reiterated that a portion of the profit from the massive oil
find will be used in the re-building of the Third Temple in Jerusalem.

In 1993, according to Stephens, more than 100 earthquakes in seven
days rocked the area from Mount Carmel down to the Red Sea,
redistributing the massive oil deposit buried from the days of Lot.

When Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed, the southwest end of the Dead
Sea turned into a mountain of salt, and that salt dome stretches nine
miles long, 3/4 miles wide and 18,000 feet deep. The salt has acted as
a preservative for the past 4,000 years. It doesn't allow oil to flow
through it.

"This is the area where Sodom was located," explained Stephens. "In
Genesis 19, God ignited all of the oil and gas in that valley and then
it rained back down and blew a hole 40 miles long, eight miles wide
and three miles deep. Fire and brimstone fell into that hole and they
eventually turned to salt. It made Sodom and Gomorrah oil boom towns."

Prominent born-again Christian oilmen have drilled in specific
locations in Israel based on their interpretation of various Scripture
references. Among them have been Gilman Hill, Andy Sorelle, Jr., and
Canadian Lyle Harron. Hill invested $6 million at a drill site near
Mount Carmel in the '70s. It came up dry. Sorelle also drilled during
the 80's, on the Mediterranean, and spent millions on various leases
throughout Israel. Harron spent nearly a decade at a Netanya lease,
just north of Tel Aviv. Even the late Armand Hammer was dedicated to
finding "black gold" offshore in the Mediterranean.

After a tragic car accident involving his family cut short his playing
days with the now-defunct Titans, Stephens returned to Texas to make
his fortune in the oil business, and to the fast life of Las Vegas
gambling and boozing.

In January 1978, Hayseed, who had been "partying" for days, had an
experience like the Apostle Paul on the Damascus Road. He told Jesus
he'd go anywhere, even to the North Pole. Shortly afterwards, he was
holding his first revival above the Arctic Circle, at Prudhoe Bay, an
Alaskan oil camp.

A meeting in 1982 played a key role in establishing Stephens'
relationship with Israel and the Jewish people. Hayseed was one of the
dozen Christian businessmen invited to pray with then Israeli Prime
Minister Menachem Begin just prior to his making a decision on the war
and invasion of Lebanon.

Stephens felt led by the Lord to give Begin a large, white Texas
cowboy hat and it was then that Begin, unknowingly, spoke prophetic
words: "Maybe you will be the one to come and find oil for us in
Israel."

Two hours later, the Lord spoke to Stephens, telling him the "greatest
oil field in the world" lay beneath the southwest end of the Dead Sea.

US trying to change Israeli government to get agreement signed?

Weekend News Today By Andra Brack Source: Ha'aretz

Mon Oct 5 , 1998 -- According to Ha'aretz, U.S. officials are
exploring the possibility of establishing a "government of national
unity" on the eve of the trilateral summit meeting slated for later
this month in the United States. The agreement on Israel's second
further redeployment in the West Bank is supposed to be signed at the
summit, attended by Benjamin Netanyahu, Yasser Arafat and Bill
Clinton. In talks last week the Americans said they were deeply
skeptical of Netanyahu's ability to push through a decision on a
pullback from without putting the continued existence of his
government at deep risk. They think that Netanyahu's fear that the
government will be toppled in a no-confidence vote could cause the
summit to fail. Israeli sources in the United States agree. The
Americans told their Labor Party contacts that now is the time to
decide on the formation of a national unity government in order to
advance the peace process at its most critical juncture. Within the
Labor Party, opinion is divided as to whether this will happen.
Sources close to party leader Ehud Barak said that ever since the leak
of secret contacts he had been conducting with Netanyahu about the
possible establishment of a unity government, the entire issue has
been put on a back burner and the two men have not even spoken.
However, some in Labor say that if a serious offer is forthcoming from
Netanyahu, based on the convincing ground of "salvaging the peace
process," Barak would not be able to reject it out of hand. In the
meantime, with U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright due in
Israel on Tuesday to prepare the trilateral summit meeting, the joint
Israeli-Palestinian committees will meet today. The committees that
will be meeting today are those on the "safe passage" route for
Palestinians between Gaza and the West Bank, on the Palestinian
airport at Rafah and on the industrial park at the Karni checkpoint on
the border of the Gaza Strip and Israel. Albright will hold two days
of talks, after which the exact date of the summit meeting will be
decided. Although the original date was Oct 15, it is possible that
the meeting will be deferred until Oct. 19. On the Palestinian side,
senior spokesmen have been saying that there is little place for
optimism. Arafat said Friday in Ramallah that no substantive progress
was achieved in the talks last month in Washington. Erekat said
yesterday that the principal Israeli positions have not changed, and
so it is difficult to accept the optimistic assessments that were
voiced following the Washington meetings, which involved Clinton,
Arafat and Netanyahu. Netanyahu has rejected criticism expressed by
various ministers about the timing of the summit in the face of the
warnings about terrorist attacks. Netanyahu told the cabinet meeting
last Thursday that a "window of opportunity" has opened in which
Israel has made gains in the negotiations, and therefore "this is the
time to sign an agreement.

MINI-DESPATCH, OCTOBER 7th. W. B. Howard.
=====================================
Here in Australia a new tax system will be fully implemented by the
year 2000 AD, that is the intention at any rate. This is the GST,
Goods and Services Tax, whereby all peoples will be taxed directly by
buying goods or services in their ordinary lives. The complaints are
pouring in that this plan will hit the low income earner, and the
pensioners - the poor citizens, the invalids and the elderly in other
words. The Labor Party in Federal Opposition has declared that they
would be able to do better than the Coalition on tax reform, if they
were given government. But, can anyone or any party really challenge
the GLOBAL TAXES which are planned by the Illuminati-controlled
international groups? Are these GST plans just another part of
globalism under Lucifer's New World Order? The answer to the latter
question is surely yes! It is after all only months away from AD 2000.

John Howard has been returned as our Prime Minister, leading the
Liberal Coalition Party. The efforts of the "grass roots" party, One
Nation, under the leadership of Pauline Hanson, to gain federal power
has come to nil! One member was all they could manage, although One
Nation gained a great deal of support for a new party. John Howard's
GST will now go ahead with no brakes being applied. Even dissenting
voices like the Democrates can really make little difference to the
outcome.

What are global taxes, and how will the planned GST in Australia fit
in to the global tax plan? A few quotes from various documents will
give us a few clues about the Plan of the NWO for "tax reform"
global-style:

CHURCHES WILL HAVE NO SPECIAL TAX-EXEMPTION.
"Churches will remain free to continue their services, but their
special tax and other privileges will be liquidated. Their buildings
will revert to the State. Religious schools will be abolished and
organised religious training for minors prohibited. Freedom will be
established for anti-religious propaganda ... Science will become
materialistic...God will be banished from the laboratories as well as
from the schools." (Dr D.Cuddy).

POPULATION CONTROL TO BE AIDED BY TAX "REFORM" GLOBALLY?
"Population controllers also had important allies in the major network
media, as well-known ABC news commentator Howard K. Smith wrote in the
January/February 1970 issue of 'The Humanist': "It is going to cause a
wrench in sentiment and attitude, but we are going to have to adjust
to limiting population ... We may even have to begin penalising people
by tax measures to induce them to do no more than have two children."
In the same year, the U.S. Congress passed Title X of the Public
Health Service Act, which established a nationwide system of family
planning clinics, and the act was sponsored by the then-Congressman
George Bush." (Dr D. Cuddy).

THE UNITED NATIONS WILL NEED A GLOBAL TAX IN ITS OWN RIGHT.
"...on February 9, Senate Concurrent Resolution 66 was introduced into
the Foreign Relations subcommittee of the Senate, and it begins,
"Whereas, in order to achieve universal peace and justice, the present
Charter of the United Nations should be changed to provide a true
world government constitution." The document was prepared by the same
Robert Hutchins, Mortimer Adler, Rexford Tugwell, and others, and the
resolution was introduced into the full Senate on September 13, 1949
by Senator Glen Taylor of Idaho. Senator Alexander Wiley of Winconsin
called it "a consummation devoutly to be wished for," and said "I
understand your proposition is either change the United Nations, or
change or create, by separate convention, a world order." Senator
Taylor later said, "We would have to sacrifice considerable
sovereignty to the world organisation to enable them to levy taxes in
their own right to support themselves." (Dr D. Cuddy).

THE UNITED NATIONS, GLOBAL TAX AND WORLD "PEACE"?
"...World Federalist Association Vice-President John Logue said on
Dec-ember 4, 1985 to the Human Rights and International Organisations
Subcommittee the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee. Logue said:
"Peace people - and all people - must see that if we really want to
stop the arms race we must have effective world political institutions
... Yes, peace people must stop patronising the people of the world.
It is time to tell the world's people not what they want to hear, but
what they ought to hear.
What they ought to hear is that if we really want to have peace and
promote justice, we must reform, restructure and strengthen the United
Nations and give it the power and authority and funds to keep the
peace and promote justice. The Security Council veto must go.
One-nation, one-vote must go. The United Nations must have TAXING
POWER or some other dependable source of revenue. It must have a
large peacekeeping force. It must be able to supervise the dismantling
and destruction of nuclear and other major weapons systems. In
appropriate areas, particularly in the area of peace and security, it
must be able to make and enforce law on the individual." (Emphasis
added).

BIG QUESTION.
How is the "new tax" for Australia preparing us all for the global
taxes of the New World? This writer would suggest that it is moving us
into the new world with the Luciferic UN, and its need of the world's
taxes being directed to its own organisation, which is directing the
plot from the wings. How much easier to control a GST tax world-wide
than a complicated, disunited, conglomeration of national taxes, which
are not uniform in any way. Time will soon tell the truth of these
fears! Population can be controlled in a limited way by taxing food
and clothing, people will not want big families in a such a world.

-----edit-----

[Most of the rest of the article is specifically targeting Australia,
except for this international campaign for the millennium:]

WHAT IS JUBILEE 2000 all about?
It is paying off the debts which poor countries [like ours] have
amassed under the cruel international dictators - at a price!!! That
price is complete control of the nations' economies, laws, religions,
military forces, farms, businesses, governments, etc. Who sent the
nations into huge debt? The "generous" globalists. What a WAR tactic,
and it is almost completed.

Iraqi Opposition Claims Iraq is Preparing to Attack Kuwait

The leader of Iraq's Shiite opposition, Ayatollah Mohammad Baqr al-
Hakim, told Agence France Presse on October 5 that Iraq's month-
long offensive against southern Iraq's Shiite population was being
carried out in preparation for a new invasion of Kuwait. Speaking
from his headquarters in Tehran, Hakim said that Baghdad had also
reinforced its troops in the south in recent weeks, and has changed
the location of key government and security apparatus offices.

On September 28, the Voice of Rebellious Iraq, the radio station of
Hakim's Supreme Assembly of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq
(SAIRI), claimed that Baghdad had deployed Republican guard
troops, the 11th and 51st Army Divisions, security forces, Baath
Party mercenaries, and gangs of Saddam Hussein's Fedayeen
against Shiites resistance fighters and tribesmen in the south.
SAIRI radio also said that Baghdad had deployed units of the Iraqi-
sponsored Iranian resistance, the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MKO),
against the Shiites. Most interesting, however, was the claim by
SAIRI that Baghdad "also dispatched, for the first time, groups
which are agents of an [unnamed] Arab country to take part in the
attack, thereby asserting its readiness to seek support from
foreigners and the enemies of true Islam in the aggression against
our people in the rebellious south..."

This last claim, if true, has staggering implications from any direction.
What Arab country would assist Saddam Hussein to settle what
would essentially be an internal problem, but for the fact that it
involves combating forces directly sponsored by Iran? Iran has
been relatively successful in breaking out of its isolation, an
achievement Iraq can not claim. For one of the Persian Gulf states,
currently mending relations with Tehran, to become involved in a
war against Iranian proxies would represent a sudden and dramatic
shift in policy. It is possible that one of Iran or Iraq's neighbors
would get involved, not out of any love of Saddam Hussein, but int
eh interest of maintaining the region's traditional balance of power.
There have been recent rumors that a Republican Guard Division in
Kirkuk was disbanded and many of its officers were executed for
plotting a coup. Perhaps the current Iraqi offensive is aimed at
mopping up the southern half of a coup plot.

There are, however, some candidates for "agents of an Arab
country" who would not require a major policy shift to take part in
actions against Iraq's Shiites. We speak specifically of Osama Bin
Laden, his Wahhabi "Afghan Arabs," and perhaps his Sudanese
allies. While they stretch the definition of "agents of an Arab
country" slightly, Bin Laden and company do have the motivation.
First and foremost, they owe Saddam for his financial and logistical
assistance in the past, and perhaps for providing shelter at present.
As demonstrated by his alleged deployment of MKO troops against
the Shiites, Saddam is not one to tolerate freeloading, and Bin
Laden may be paying his "rent." Additionally, Bin Laden's Afghan
allies are facing 200,000 Iranian troops along the Iranian-Afghan
border. By contributing to the destruction of Iran's proxies in Iraq,
Bin Laden could hope to force Iran to reevaluate its own
deployments. Finally, Bin Laden's radical Sunni Muslim Wahhabi
would not pass up the opportunity to wipe out a few Iranian-backed
Shiites, regardless of the context.

If the SAIRI claim of foreign Arab involvement in southern Iraq is
true, and if it is, in fact, Bin Laden, then Iran's already full policy
agenda now has another issue to deal with. Iran is now involved in
the Turkish/Syrian/Greek crisis. Iran is worried about Turkish
influence among the Kurds in northern Iraq and the Turkish threat to
Syria. On October 5, the Iranian and Greek defense ministers met
in Athens to discuss bilateral ties, giving Ankara something to think
about as it approaches a confrontation with Greece over Russian
missile deliveries to Cyprus.

Iran is also involved in a standoff with the Taleban along the
Afghan border. Tehran's recent decision to postpone massive
maneuvers scheduled for this week along the border probably had
less to do with ongoing efforts at mediation than with sorting out
where Russia stands on a military solution to the Afghan crisis.
Now, Baghdad and its minions have attacked Iran's allies around
the holy Shiite towns in southern Iraq.

Iran has some decisions to make. Each crisis surrounding it
threatens potentially serious commitment should Iran get involved.
This too may have something to do with Iran's frequent posturing
but total lack of substantive action. Iran doesn't have any bite-
sized issues to deal with.

This could explain SAIRI's claim of Iraqi preparations for an attack
on Kuwait. That message, not insignificantly delivered from Tehran,
cries out to one party in particular -- the United States. If Iran can
get Washington to pay attention to Iraq, perhaps Tehran can turn
its attention elsewhere. Kuwait may actually be cooperating in an
effort to re-involve the U.S. In statements at the UN, in Egypt, and
in the Kuwaiti media, Kuwait has strengthened its rhetoric against
Iraq, rejecting Iraqi offers to normalize relations and demanding
complete Iraqi adherence to UN resolutions. While denying that it is
responding to particular recent events, Kuwait has reportedly
reinforced its border with Iraq. This is on top of joint military
exercises being carried out with U.S. and British forces in northern
Kuwait.

SAIRI's statements raise a lot of questions, but the possible answers
more than bear watching -- whether Iraq is preparing an attack on
Kuwait, an Arab country has decided to bolster Saddam Hussein's
regime against threats from Iran, or Iran is quietly asking the U.S. for
backup in dealing with its several crises.

UN celebrates 50 years as the world's peacekeeper

Weekend News Today By Andra Brack Source: AP

Tue Oct 6 , 1998 -- The United Nations commemorated 50 years of
peacekeeping reflecting on its goal to ``confront and defeat the worst
in man with the best in man.'' The first peacekeeping operation was
monitoring an Israeli-Arab truce in 1948.

Fifty years after 36 observers were sent to what was then Palestine
and other Arab lands, 14,000 peacekeepersare serving today in 17
different missions, Annan said. ``No figures, however, can do justice
to the ultimate sacrifice that more than 1,500 peacekeepers have made
over this half century,'' Annan said. ``Today we pay tribute, above
all, to the brave `blue helmets' who gave their lives in the cause of
peace.'' To mark the occasion Tuesday night, New York's Empire State
Building was lighting its famous spire in the sky blue and white
colors of the United Nations.

Opening a special General Assembly session to mark the 50th
anniversary of the ``Blue Helmets,'' Annan praised the ideal that
propelled the first peacekeepers to take to the battlefield ``under a
new flag with a new mission: a mission of peace.'' ``It would be no
exaggeration to say that that mission was without precedent in human
history,'' Annan said. ``It was an attempt to confront and defeat the
worst in man with the best in man; to counter violence with
tolerance, might with moderation, and war with peace.''

Editor's note: If they would only accept that the sin (worst) in man
WAS defeated on the cross, once and for all - then they could have
the peace that passes all understanding.

HUMAN MICROCHIP IMPLANTS USED IN ITALY TO
TRACK POTENTIAL KIDNAP VICTIMS

London Telegraph - October 6, 1998

The latest news in the use of bio-implantable
microchips to track humans comes today from
Italy where wealthy, powerful, and famous
individuals who fear being kidnapped are having
microprocessors placed in their bodies so police
can track them down if they are kidnapped.

A report in Rome's La Republica newspaper said the
"synthetic and organic" microchips being used are
called Sky-Eyes, originally developed for
Israeli intelligence use.

They are being promoted as the latest development
as a "biological adaptation" of the Global Positioning
System using such a small amount of energy that it
can be "borrowed" from the human body. According
to a release from the Electronic Telegraph today:

"The chip is supposed to be invisible to both
the naked eye and to X-rays. A person who carries
it is supplied with an eight-digit code by the
company. He, or she, is advised to divulge this
only to next of kin or a trusted legal representative.

105TH CONGRESS
2D SESSION
H. CON. RES.
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
Mr. Saxton, Mr. Salmon and Mr. DeLay submitted the
following concurrent, resolution; which was referred
to the Committee on _________

CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Expressing the sense of the Congress that the President
should reassert the traditional opposition of the United
States to the unilateral declaration of a Palestinian
State.

Whereas the United States has never endorsed the creation
of an independent Palestinian State;

Whereas the United States has traditionally opposed the unilateral
declaration of a Palestinian State because of concerns
that such a State could pose a threat to Israel and
could have a destabilizing effect on the entire Middle
East;

Whereas the United States stated its position, after Israel
and the Palestinians signed the Oslo Accords, that all
questions of Palestinian sovereignty and statehood are
matters which must be mutually agreed upon by the parties;

Whereas the administration's recent statements on a unilateral
declaration of a Palestinian State have been contradictory
and confusing;

Whereas a unilateral declaration of Palestinian statehood
would be a grievous violation of the Oslo Accords;

Whereas despite the Oslo Accords, Chairman Arafat, his Cabinet,
and the Palestinian National Council have threatened
to unilaterally proclaim the establishment of a Palestinian
State in May 1999;

Whereas the Palestinian Cabinet on September 24, 1998,
stated: ''at the end of the interim period, it (the Palestinian
Government) shall declare the establishment of a Palestinian
State on all Palestinian land occupied since 1967, with Jerusalem
as the eternal capital of the Palestinian State'';

Whereas Chairman Arafat, speaking to the United Nations
on September 28, 1998, called upon world leaders to support
an independent Palestinian State;

Whereas Chairman Arafat stated on July 15, 1998: ''There
is a transition period of 5 years and after 5 years we
have the right to declare an independent Palestinian
State''; and

Whereas Palestinian National Council Speaker Salim al-Za'nun
stated on June 15, 1998: ''If following our declaration
of a State, Israel renews its occupation of East
Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian
people will struggle and resist the occupier with all means possible,
including armed struggle'': Now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate
concurring), That it is the sense of the Congress that

(1) Israel, and Israel alone, can determine its security needs;

(2) the final political status of the Palestinian entity can only be
determined through bilateral negotiations and agreement between Israel
and the Palestinian Authority;

(3) the President must reaffirm that any such unilateral declaration of
a Palestinian State would be a grievous violation of the Oslo Accords,
would seriously impede any possibility of advancing the peace process,
and would have severe negative consequences for Palestinian relations
with the United States; and

(4) the President should now publicly and unequivocally state that the
United States will actively oppose such a unilateral declaration and
will not extend recognition to any unilaterally declared Palestinian
State.

GLOBAL PRAYER AT UN - United Nations Sec'y Gen. Kofi Annan addressed
world leaders (at St. Bartholomew's Church in NY) representing
religions such as Hinduism, Islam, Shintoism, and Buddhism, yoked with
Christian, Jewish, Jain, [and] Sikh groups in a UN-sponsored "Global
Religious Service for Peace."(9/26 World). He put a new slant on the
meaning of prayer, saying the challenges before the UN "give prayer a
rightful place in the work of the United Nations," and, "prayer is
compassion and concern; it is thanksgiving and atonement; it is
yearning and relief."

REAGAN COMMUNISM COMMENTS FIT CLINTON - We received the following in
an e-mail from Colorado pastor Dan Unruh: "I've just finished reading
Dinesh D'Souza's book, Ronald Reagan. I find it interesting that
comments Reagan made concerning communism fit Pres. Clinton as well.
Just substitute Clinton's name any time the Soviet Union or communism
is mentioned. For example, on Page 135: '...the only morality the
Soviets recognized [was] that which [furthered] their cause...' Pg.
76: 'Calling a Communist a liar is pretty frustrating. How do you
insult a pig by calling it a pig? Communists are not bound by our
morality. They say that any crime, including lying, is moral if it
advances the cause of socialism.' Any question as to where Bill
Clinton got his philosophy of lie, deny, 'forget'?"

ROCK IS ROCK, WHO DO CCM'ERS FOOL? - A secular writer in our local
paper rightly discerned what a contemporary "Christian rock"
performance is all about. He wrote (9/20 HT): "Yes, it looks like a
rock concert, it sounds like a rock concert, and in every aspect
except for the lyrics, it's just like any standard rock concert by
today's teen-oriented bands: plenty of flash and lots of thrash on
stage; heads bobbing and bodies moshing in the crowd...." The message
is the music - the rock beat!

RELIGION BANNED IN UZBEKISTAN - Former Soviet country Uzbekistan's
constitution provides for religious freedom, but a harsh new law bans
all religious activities not certified by the government, and makes it
illegal for anyone except government-certified clergy to talk about
religion. Sunday School and home Bible studies are banned, Any church
with fewer than 100 members must close its doors and stop all
activities in this mainly Muslim country.

YEVGHENI PRIMAKOV, RUSSIA'S NEW PM, IS PRO-ARAB

The extraordinary appointment of Yegeny M. Primakov as Prime
Minister of Russia deserves attention. He was not Yeltzin's main
choice, but is now firmly in power with Yeltsin fading. What you
might not realize about him is his long history of pro-Arab,
pro-Palestinian, even pro-Syrian and pro-Iraqi support. He is fluent
in Arabic, a friend of all the anti-Zionists, relatively young and
energetic. His first act was to print billions of rubles to satisfy
the masses, which will surely lead to incredible inflation and
subsequent unrest in Russia. (James Trimm, October 5, 1998)

Global Intelligence Update
Red Alert
October 9, 1998

Russian Army Sells Arms to Pay for Food

On October 7, Russia's "Interfax" news agency reported that
customs officials in the Russian Far East city of Khasan had
intercepted an attempt to sell five Mil Mi-8T (NATO designation
"Hip C") assault transport helicopters to North Korea. The
helicopters bore identification numbers indicating they were the
property of the Russian Army, and were still fitted with weapons
pods and other military equipment. The helicopters, valued at
$300,000 each, were reportedly offered to North Korea for $20,000
each.

Additionally, on September 29, Russia's "ITAR-TASS" news agency
reported that a large amount of weapons had been stolen from a
Russian Pacific Fleet ammunition dump between September 22 and
September 28. According to initial estimates, more than 17,000
rounds of ammunition, several thousand stun grenades, six grenade
launcher rounds, and 10 grenades were missing.

Thefts from Russian arsenals, prevalent since the collapse of the
Soviet Union, have increased in frequency with the deterioration
of the Russian economy. The theft of small arms and ammunition
for use or sale by individual soldiers, criminal groups, or
guerrillas is a matter of concern to the Russian government. But
the attempted sale of large equipment such as helicopters to
pariah regimes like North Korea is a global concern as well.
Moreover, it is a serious commentary on the state of the Russian
military. A private can steal a Kalashnikov, but to steal five
transport helicopters requires the participation of officers.

According to numerous recent reports, the Russian military,
especially in the Far East and other remote backwaters of the
federation, is on the brink of starvation. Russian soldiers have
felt the brunt of the country's economic crisis and are owed
several months of back-wages. Worse still, according to Russian
Public TV, the entire Russian army with the exception of the
General Staff received neither rations nor money to purchase food
during August and, apparently, September. This has left officers
to fend for themselves as they attempt to feed their troops, a
task made official in August by then acting Defense Minister Igor
Sergeyev, when he ordered all ranks of commanders to "look for
additional sources [of sustenance for the winter] and assume
personal control."

The Defense Ministry announced that trips would be organized for
all soldiers and officers to take to the fields to harvest
mushrooms, berries, and other sources of food for the winter. In
the Moscow Military District, 12,000 soldiers were sent to
harvest potatoes around Moscow in exchange for meat and bread.
In the Far East region of Khabarovsk, the territorial
administration has reportedly stopped the provision of bread to
Far East military units, due to non-payment of debts.

The Russian government understands its problem but has been
unable to do much to alleviate it -- hence the orders to scavenge
for mushrooms. The Defense Ministry has calculated that the
actual debt owed the army, adjusted for inflation, is
approximately 120 billion rubles. On September 19, Russian
Defense Minister Sergeyev said that an agreement on the repayment
of the total debt owed to the armed forces, amounting to 4.1
billion rubles, had been reached between himself and President
Boris Yeltsin. Sergeyev said that the plan was to repay the
debts with foodstuffs.

In September, Sergeyev also announced that the Defense Ministry
had proposed a number of measures to the Russian government
"which will enable the armed forces to earn money." Said
Sergeyev, "All we need right now is to do this, using the
experiences of the Chinese armed forces at a difficult period.
Packages of documents to this effect were submitted to First
Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Maslyukov yesterday [September 18] and
I hope they will be approved."

Apparently, some Russian commanders have taken Sergeyev at his
word, assuming "personal control" and following the Chinese model
of entering business -- in this case, the arms trade. Russian
military commanders are facing the potential need to maintain
public order within their regions, and can't be sure which side
their own troops will be on. In an effort to ensure the
integrity of the armed forces prior to the onset of winter and
possible civil unrest, they have apparently resorted to selling
military equipment in exchange for cash to buy food. The arms
proliferation risks inherent in this freelance financing effort
are clear.

Russian customs officials caught this shipment, but what else
haven't they caught? What other types of weapons are on the
market right now? Russian strategic missile troops are
reportedly in the same predicament as the rest of the Russian
armed forces. The potential for everything from assault rifles
to assault helicopters to strategic weapons reaching the arsenals
of countries like North Korea, Iraq, Iran and Libya is
disconcerting enough. But international mercenaries and
terrorist organizations such as Osama Bin Laden's group are also
shopping.

Recent rumors claim that Bin Laden may have received nuclear
weaponry from Central Asian republics. These rumors have yet to
be substantiated, and even in the midst of economic collapse
Russian nuclear arms are kept under closer scrutiny than
helicopters. But even if they can't get nukes, terrorists can do
a great deal of damage with surplus surface to air missiles,
mortars, and plastic explosives.

Russia invited to talk on Oct 15

Weekend News Today By Staff Writer Source: Washington Post

Thu Oct 8 , 1998 -- Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat today invited
Russia to take part in Middle East peace negotiations in Washington
and generally play a more active role in the peace process, Russian
news agencies reported. The invitation came during discussions between
Arafat and President Boris Yeltsin about prospects for a breakthrough
in the peace talks, the ITAR-Tass and Interfax news agencies reported.

Russia is officially a co-sponsor of the peace process launched by a
conference in Madrid, Spain, in 1991. But the United States has played
a far greater role. Yeltsin said his government might be interested in
participating in the Washington talks, but first wants to know the
views of Israel and the United States on the plan, Interfax reported,
citing Yeltsin aide Sergei Prikhodko. Arafat is on a two-day visit to
Moscow in the wake of his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu and U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Those talks
raised hopes that the stalled peace process could move ahead. Russian
and Palestinian ministers also signed a Russian-Palestinian agreement
on trade and economic cooperation. Arafat was also scheduled to meet
with Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov and other government officials,
and with Russian Orthodox Church leader Patriarch Alexy II.

"Russian-Palestinian talks assume a special meaning in the light of
the difficult situation in the Middle East,'' Russian Foreign Ministry
spokesman Vladimir Rakhmanin said, according to the ITAR-Tass news
agency.

Jordan asked to join peace talks

Weekend News Today By Staff Writer Source: IsrealWire

Thu Oct 8 , 1998 -- Sources in the PLO Authority (PA) are reporting
that the US administration has called upon Jordan's King Hussein to
attend the summit planned for next week between Israel and the PA.
Hussein is currently in the United States where he is undergoing
treatment for cancer. The king has not responded to the request
according to the US source. It is unknown how long the meeting will
take, but the United States is exerting pressure to reach an accord
that will result in the Israeli retreat from areas throughout Judea
and Samaria. The planned October 19th opening of the Knesset winter
session will be delayed, for at least one day, to permit the prime
minister to return from the peace summit. President Clinton stated in
an interview yesterday that he is hopeful an agreement will be reached
and the summit will carry one [on] for as long as the sides feel
necessary. The president did acknowledge asking the participants to
allocated several days for the summit, to permit completing the
ongoing negotiations.

Editors note: First the PA and Israel, then the CIA, now Jordan, the
number of parties just keeps bigger. Daniel 9:27 keeps coming to
mind.

Thousands of homing pidgeons disappear

Weekend News Today By Staff Writer Source: Washington Post

Thu Oct 8 , 1998 -- Homing pigeons, as the name suggests, are supposed
to find their way home. But more than 2,000 of the creatures have
disappeared this week -- simply gone AWOL -- and no one can explain
it. The birds lost their way during two homing-pigeon races held
Monday in the mid-Atlantic region. Out of 1,800 birds competing in a
200-mile race from New Market, Va., to Allentown, Pa., about 1,500
have vanished. And in a 150-mile race from western Pennsylvania to
suburban Philadelphia, 700 of 900 pigeons are missing. Most of the
pigeons should have been back in their lofts within a few hours.
Although it's not unusual to lose a few birds during a race -- a
hungry hawk, for example, might snag a few racers -- this week's loss
is extraordinary, organizers of the two events say. It's hard to come
up with an answer, pigeon-race enthusiasts say, because no one knows
for certain how homing pigeons do what they do.

Unlike their wild pigeon brethren, these speed machines don't know
how to feed themselves in the wild and are easy prey. Some races are
as long as 600 miles and are physically taxing on the birds. But
Monday's events were of routine length, and owners said their pigeons
should have been able to completethe races without a problem.

Could missing pigeon mean a major earthquake?

Weekend News Today By Staff Writer Source: Rob from WeekEnd Discussion
Groups

Fri Oct 9 , 1998 -- (Refer to 10/8 article in WeekEnd News:"Thousands
of homing pidgeons disappear")

Jim Berkland, Geologist and Earthquake Expert, says "a Smash Race is
one where few of the birds get back on time or do not return at all,
Corini has records of Bay Area pigeon races going back decades, and
he spent some time researching the greatest smash race in local
history. The date caused me to gasp. It was March 24, 1964, which I
knew was just 3 days before the greatest quake measured for North
America, the 8.5M Richter (9.2Mw Moment magnitude) Alaskan Quake on
*Good Friday*, 1964. It struck in the late afternoon on the day of a
Full Moon! It had been preceded by a few months of strange slowing of
Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone. In recent months we have had a
similar report about Old Faithful.

I have had several unconfirmed reports of the Federal Scientists
being concerned about a large US quake this fall. I don't know if
that is true, but I am concerned, and this amazing coincidence of
Smash pigeon races does not ease my mind. I am trying to learn if
other parts of the world have experienced similar "smash" races."

(Note - The 1964 'smash' race occurred over 1600 miles from the
location of the Alaska quake. Jim Berkland states that the location
of the smash race may have little to do with the epicenter of any
following quake...that the magnetic disturbance caused by fault
stress is so powerful it can disrupt the internal magnetic guidance
systems of pigeons great distances away.)

Canadian militia to prepare for martial law

Weekend News Today By Staff Writer Source: WorldNet Daily

Fri Oct 9 , 1998 -- Preparing for a civil emergency resulting from
mass computer collapse on January 1, 2000, has become the first
priority of the Canadian military, a general told a group of
Toronto-area reservists in Meaford Sunday. The recommendation from us
is that we would like to see some form of commitment to ensuring that
the reserves are able to respond," Holmes observes. "We just said some
sort of mobilization plan, to allow us to determine what reserves we
may get. (That would correspond to) Level Two mobilization."

(In Canadian military doctrine, four stages of mobilization exist --

Sharon appointed as Isreal foreign minister

Weekend News Today By Staff Writer Source: Washington Post

Fri Oct 9 , 1998 -- Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed
Cabinet hawk Ariel Sharon as Israel's foreign minister today, placing
him in charge of the negotiations with Palestinians on a permanent
peace agreement. Sharon is one of the staunchest opponents of
compromise with the Palestinians. By letting him run the negotiations,
Netanyahu appeared to be trying to silence hard-liners who have
threatened to topple the government over an Israeli troop withdrawal
in the West Bank.

The appointment came just days before Netanyahu was
to leave for a Mideast summit in Washington where he and Palestinian
leader Yasser Arafat will try to conclude agreement on an Israeli
pullback from 13 percent of the West Bank. Sharon has said a 13
percent withdrawal would endanger Israel's security.

Posted 10/10/98 - see web page for chart. This has been in my mind to write
and consider for some time now, so I took the time this morning to type it up.
It is sort of an addendum to the piece I did on the fourth seal.

The Seven Trumpets Relate To The First Four Seals

I want to further what I said about the seven seals in a previous article. I
am basing what I write here on verses that say AFTER the four judgments, if
Israel does not turn and walk according to God's ways (in other words,
repent), God promises to "punish you seven times more for your sins." What
are these seven more punishments, and and is there any hint of them in the
Book of Revelation? I ask the question because

1.God is an unchangeable God

2.these are the established ways of God with Israel, and they are firmly set
in His word

I want to begin this section by taking a long excerpt from the section about
the fourth seal (#1 The Fourth Seal As Found In The Old Testament). Before
proceeding, it is important to read this excerpt very thoroughly, along with
its injected notes and the new emphases I have placed in it:

These plagues escalate from the mid-point of the tribulation until Israel's
power is finally broken because they refuse to repent, a non-repentance
Revelation speaks of. God says, "I will break the pride of your power."
Remember what Daniel heard: "and when he shall have accomplished to scatter
the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished" (Daniel
12:7). This verse in Daniel very aptly describes the curses of Leviticus 26
for breaking the covenant. And Moses goes on from here in very descriptive
language what is related in the third and fourth seals:

Lev 26:18 And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will
punish you seven times more for your sins. 19 And I will break the pride of
your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass: 20
And your strength shall be spent in vain: for your land shall not yield her
increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits [part of
the famine of the 3rd seal]. 21 And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will
not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you
according to your sins [notice the escalation of tribulation by the use of
the phrase, "I will bring seven times more plagues."]. 22 I will also send
wild beasts among you [part of the 4th seal], which shall rob you of your
children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number [reduction in
numbers]; and your high ways shall be desolate [desolation - another part of
the Revelation judgements]. 23 And if ye will not be reformed by me by these
things, but will walk contrary unto me; 24 Then will I also walk contrary
unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins. 25 And I will
bring a sword upon you [part of the 4th seal judgements], that shall avenge
the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your
cities, I will send the pestilence among you [part of the 4th seal]; and ye
shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy [part of the Revelation
judgements]. 26 And when I have broken the staff of your bread [part of the
3rd seal judgement], ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they
shall deliver you your bread again by weight [the balance of the third
seal]: and ye shall eat, and not be satisfied [not eat their bread to the
full]. 27 And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary
unto me; 28 Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I,
will chastise you seven times for your sins. 29 And ye shall eat the flesh
of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat. 30 And I will
destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcases
upon the carcases of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you [complements
the 6th seal]. 31 And I will make your cities waste, and bring your
sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your sweet
odours. [This is exactly what will happen during the Tribulation: the
sanctuary will be made desolate and the sacrifices will be stopped, but it
more refers to the altar of incense, the coals of which the high priest
would put in a censor as a sweet odor to the Lord when he went into the Holy
of Holies. This complements the 7th seal]. 32 And I will bring the land into
desolation: and your enemies which dwell therein shall be astonished at it
[again, this is what happens in the tribulation]. 33 And I will scatter you
among the heathen [spoken of in Matthew 24 and Daniel], and will draw out a
sword after you [found under the 4th seal]: and your land shall be desolate,
and your cities waste [more judgement of the seals and Daniel's prophecy;
Armageddon].

That these verses describe God's dealings with Israel in the Book of
Revelation cannot be denied. I won't elaborate on this because it should be
obvious. Yet, what about these seven MORE PUNISHMENTS delivered with an eye
towards bringing Israel to repentance?

There two very plausible considerations in Revelations: the seven trumpets
and the seven bowls. From the descriptions given in these verses, it would
be more plausible that these would be the trumpets more than the bowls.
There are no mental gymnatics in this scenario, and it gives some legitimate
basis for placing the trumpets in the scheme of things concerning these Old
Testament verses and the Book of Revelation. Placing the emphasis, not on
where the trumpets are to be placed, but the purpose of them, I believe,
will reveal a reasonable scenario as to where they belong in the scheme of
things.

Applying what God said in Leviticus 26 to the fourth seal in Revelation
6:7-8, we have the following chart as a beginning to chart these things out:

Rev 6:7 And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the
fourth beast say, Come and see. 8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and
his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power
was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword,
and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

What is contained in the Seven Trumpets of Revelation?

Rev 8:2 And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were
given seven trumpets.

The following events then occur through the seventh trumpet:

The angel with golden censor throws it to earth as an answer to the prayers
of the saints and there were "voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and
an earthquake" (Rev 8:3-5).

The seven angels prepare to sound their trumpets (Rev. 8:6).

Just an interesting sidenote before I get into looking at the seven trumpets
because some of them deal with 1/3s, while the seals and bowls do speak in
terms of this fraction. Throughout the trumpets, the fraction 1/3 is
mentioned, and 1/3 is known in Scripture as the numerical value God uses to
depict the slaying of 2/3s of apostate or rebellious Israel in order to
bring forth a 1/3 through these punishments as His remnant:

Ezek 5:12 A third part of thee shall die with the pestilence, and with
famine shall they be consumed in the midst of thee: and a third part shall
fall by the sword round about thee; and I will scatter a third part into all
the winds, and I will draw out a sword after them. . . . . Ezek 6:8 Yet will
I leave a remnant, that ye may have some that shall escape the sword among
the nations, when ye shall be scattered through the countries. Ezek 6:9 And
they that escape of you shall remember me among the nations whither they
shall be carried captives, because I am broken with their whorish heart,
which hath departed from me, and with their eyes, which go a whoring after
their idols: and they shall loathe themselves for the evils which they have
committed in all their abominations. Ezek 6:10 And they shall know that I am
the LORD, and that I have not said in vain that I would do this evil unto
them.

The First Trumpet: Rev 8:7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail
and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the
third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

The Second Trumpet: Rev 8:8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a
great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part
of the sea became blood; 9 And the third part of the creatures which were in
the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

The Third Trumpet: Rev 8:10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a
great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the
third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; 11 And the name
of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became
wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

Rev 8:12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was
smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so
as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third
part of it, and the night likewise.

The angel announces the next three trumpets as woes, completing the seven
punishments: Rev 8:13 And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the
midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters
of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three
angels, which are yet to sound!

The Fifth trumpet: The locusts headed by Apollyon (Abaddon) are released to
NOT KILL, but torment men for five months: Rev 9:1 And the fifth angel
sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was
given the key of the bottomless pit. 2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and
there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the
sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. 3 And there
came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power,
as the scorpions of the earth have power. 4 And it was commanded them that
they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing,
neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their
foreheads. 5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but
that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the
torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. 6 And in those days shall men
seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall
flee from them. . . . 12 One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes
more hereafter.

I want to interject here that having the trumpet begin at or right after the
Mid-Week solves a big problem timewise. The problem that many ignore is the
fact that this plague lasts five months, and in laying out scenarios
anywhere near the end of the 70th week, one must add in five months to what
ever his scenario is. In this scenario, with the trumpets starting to blow
at Mid-Week, the fifth trumpet has time to work itself out without
interference with celestial phenomena in the sixth seal when God's wrath
arrives or begins to come forth (Rev. 6:12-17).

The sixth trumpet or second woe is followed by the loosing of four angels
bound in the great river Euphrates: Rev 9:13 And the sixth angel sounded,
and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before
God, 14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four
angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. 15 And the four angels
were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a
year, for to slay the third part of men. . . .

Finally, the seventh trumpet, or third woe, is blown: Rev 11:15 And the
seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The
kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his
Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

I believe this is a workable scenario. I have some other thoughts I may add
at a later time, but for now would be interested in any input, pro or con.

Very interesting, but i think it woul dhave been easier to add seven times more
plagues by using this:

Rev.
10:1 And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud:
and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet
as pillars of fire:
2 And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the
sea, and his left foot on the earth,
3 And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried,
seven thunders uttered their voices.
4 And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and
I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven
thunders uttered, and write them not.

could it be these seven thunders weren't recorded because they can be prevented?
I have often wondered what they were there for.....

Alan

Hi there...

Extremely interesting piece, Ed. Question though... in this scenario,
do the seals and trumpets run simultaneously? Does seal one open
up at the beginning of the week and seal seven close it, in other
words?

It's interesting Ed ... but we seem to be studying along the same
lines. <g> Your article mentioned the "seven times more plagues"
in Leviticus, and also pointed out the similarities with the Fourth
Seal. A few days ago I was noting the same "four judgements"
mentioned in Ezekiel 14:12-ff with those of the fourth seal.
