UN starts overhaul of Bosnia judiciary system

Weekend News Today By Andra Brack Source: TampaBay Onling

Sat Oct 17 , 1998 -- The United Nations has begun overhauling Bosnia's
judiciary system to reduce ethnic bias and political influence, the
mission chief said. Elisabeth Rehn said Friday that some laws have to
be amended while judges and prosecutors must become independent. She
said local courts across Bosnia are full of ``injustice and
unfairness.'' Rehn said the U.N. has established a group of 18
international and eight local lawyers. After training, they will be
deployed across the country to gather information about the judicial
system. The U.N. Security Council decided to put the Bosnian judicial
system and its monitoring under the U.N. mandate in July. Since the
1995 Dayton peace accord, the main U.N. task has been reorganizing
police across the country. Rehn said police are improving but still
cannot do the job properly because of the flawed judicial system.

Information and recommendations the U.N. group makes will be given
to the office of Bosnia's top international mediator, Carlos
Westendorp. Westendorp has been given authority by Western powers to
impose laws or remove officials on his own if not satisfied with the
response of local leaders.

Talks Continue at Wye: US President Clinton took a hands-on role in
the Middle East summit Saturday, hoping to inject momentum after two
days of little progress. Although a news blackout has been maintained,
word has been leaked that little headway has been made in the meetings
thus far. One official inside the closely-guarded estate said Arafat's
chief negotiator, Saeb Erekat, engaged in a furious exchange at one
point with Prime Minister Netanyahu when the Israeli leader referred
to the 'West Bank' as Judea and Samaria, which are the Biblical names
for the area. One issue on the table is the release of 3,000
Palestinians held by Israel for security offenses. The Palestinian
Authority (PA/PLO) official who has been trying to negotiate prisoner
releases accompanied Arafat to the US talks. In addition to meetings
with PM Netanyahu and PLO leader Arafat, Clinton had a 12-minute
telephone call with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak regarding the
accords. The talks are scheduled to last several days and mark an
intensive push by the US to get Israel to agree to a further 13
percent military withdrawal from Judea and Samaria.

Israeli Foreign Minister Ariel Sharon and Defense Minister Yitzhak
Mordechai are scheduled to join the talks on Sunday. The two had taken
part in ceremonies Thursday in Israel marking the 25th anniversary of
the October 1973 Yom Kippur War. The war's decisive battle came when
the 143rd division of the Israel Defense Force (IDF), then led by
Sharon, recrossed the Suez Canal to drive back Egyptian troops. Some
25,000 soldiers and officers who took part in the crossing of the Suez
Canal gathered in Latrun to commemorate the great achievement. Sharon
was greeted with enthusiastic applause from the assemblage. He
promised again that he would not shake the hand of Arafat. Egypt began
the war by crossing the Suez and attacking Israel on Yom Kippur.

Netanyahu's Nine Points of Principle: PM Netanyahu promised his
cabinet Tuesday that he would not retreat from a series of principles
-- "both our starting points and our end points", in the words of a
senior official. Those nine points, on which he said compromise was
out of the question are:

1. Nothing will be agreed upon until everything is agreed. The deal
must be a package, and no [Israeli troop] redeployment will take place
until Israel has clear confirmation that the Palestinians are
fulfilling their part of the deal. 2. The PA/PLO must fight terror by
battling the bases of terror, arresting suspected terrorists and
putting released terrorists back in jail. 3. There must be a
Palestinian assurance of complete security cooperation with Israel. 4.
A joint Israeli-Palestinian committee against incitement must be set
up to monitor and fight incitement. 5. The Palestinian police force
must be reduced. Today, the force stands at some 36,000 [or more,
according to some reports]. According to the Oslo Accords there should
be only 24,000 police at this point. At the end of the redeployments
the Palestinians are to be allowed a total of 30,000 police. 6.
Illegal weapons held by Palestinians must be confiscated and efforts
to battle weapon smuggling must be made. 7. The Palestinians must
extradite prisoners demanded by Israel. 8. The Palestinian Covenant
must be changed by the PNC [Palestinian National Council]. 9. Observer
committees ensuring the fulfilment of responsibilities must be set up
and start working immediately. (ICEJ)

Withdrawal Entails a Total of 27.2%: Prime Minister Netanyahu
informed the Cabinet that 27.2% of Judea and Samaria will come under
Palestinian control in the framework of the planned withdrawal, as
follows: 1% that will be transferred from Area C (total Israeli
control) to Area A (total Palestinian control); 9% from Area C to Area
B (Palestinian civilian control, Israeli security control); 3% from
Area C to a special nature reserve status, under Israeli security
control and where Palestinian construction will be forbidden; 14.2%
that will go from Area B to Area A. (ARUTZ-7)

US Republicans Press Clinton: The US House Republicans introduced a
resolution last Friday [10-09-98] that calls on Clinton to assert
that he opposes a Palestinian declaration of statehood. The aim, a
source said, is to impress on the PA/PLO that it will not "be able to
move forward with declaring a Palestinian state without making a big
error and severely impairing their relations with the US". The
resolution calls on Clinton to "publicly and unequivocally state that
the United States will actively oppose such a unilateral declaration
and will not extend recognition to any unilaterally declared
Palestinian state".

Meanwhile, this week HA'ARETZ reported that senior Clinton
Administration officials have informally asked Israel to consider
accepting the principle of an eventual Palestinian state as part of a
final Wye Plantation summit document. According to the US idea, in
return for accepting the idea of a Palestinian state in principle, the
exact powers and geography of the putative state would be defined
through negotiations by the two parties and the May 4th deadline for
completion of the interim agreement period and implementation of the
final status would be postponed.

Farouk Kadoumi, head of the PLO's diplomatic desk, says that a
Palestinian state will be established in May 1999, and that it will
wage war against Israel. In an interview published in the PA/PLO's
newspaper AL HAYAT AL-JADEEDA, Kadoumi said that after the new state
is recognized by most of the world, the Palestinians will use their
weapons to fight against the Israeli presence on what he called
"Palestinian lands". He said that the only differences between Hamas
and the PLO involve the tactics by which to reach their common goal.
David Bar-Illan, a top Netanyahu media advisor, said in response,
"Kadoumi has shown the true face of Palestinian intentions -- war
with Israel".

Russia and the Arab states will recognize and back an independent
Palestinian state, according to recent media reports. France has also
indicated that it would recognize an independent "Palestine". The
Vatican's charg d'affaires in Jordan, Monsignor Dominique Rezeau,
Wednesday said the Vatican is also ready to recognize a Palestinian
state. Many other nations have also declared their readiness to accept
a Palestinian state.

The Cornerstone for the Third Temple: On October 7, 1998 The Temple
Mount and Land of Israel Faithful Movement brought the cornerstone for
the Third Temple to the gates of the Temple Mount and the City of
David. Days before, the Arabs, who still control the Temple Mount (but
do not have sovereignty over the Temple Mount), put pressure on the
Israeli authorities not to allow the Faithful to lay the cornerstone
on the Temple Mount. They threatened to cause a violent riot if it
took place. Unfortunately the Israeli authorities decided to give in
to the threats and they closed the gates of the Temple Mount before
the laying of the cornerstone. At the same time they allowed the
Faithful, and even encouraged them, to bring the cornerstone to the
City of David very close to the gates of the Temple Mount and then to
carry the cornerstone around the walls of the Temple Mount and the Old
City seven times. This showed the desire of the authorities in Israel
and the people of Israel deep in their hearts to see the fulfillment
of the desire and historical dreams to see the rebuilding of the
Temple at this time. For a full report, visit their website at:
www.templemountfaithful.org (TMF)

Tallit Constitutes a 'Provocation': The Jerusalem District court has
refused to overturn the conviction of Hillel Polchik who entered the
Temple Mount about five months ago, wrapped himself in a tallit
(prayer shawl) and began to pray. When ordered to leave by police
officers, Polchik laid down on the ground. The officers picked him and
carried him out. Two friends who were with him were also ordered to
leave before they could pray. In the verdict, Judges Ruth Orr, Ezra
Kama and Daniella Wexler wrote that a Jew praying in public on the
Temple Mount, wrapped in a prayer shawl, without prior coordination
with or permission from the police, could be interpreted as a
'provocation'. They said the act constituted a legitimate cause for
fearing a disruption of public order. (HA'ARETZ)

Jews Move into 200-year-old Synagogue in East Jerusalem: Knesset
member Benny Elon and a group of yeshiva students Thursday moved into
a deserted, Jewish-owned building in eastern Jerusalem which until
1948 served as a synagogue. Their presence promoted protests by
members of Peace Now and Palestinian leaders Hanan Ashrawi and Feisal
Husseini, whose bodyguards got into scuffles with Israeli police at
the site, in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of east Jerusalem. The
Jewish students, from the Beit Orot yeshiva on the Mount of Olives,
brought furniture, a generator and food, flew Israeli flags and
announced that they planned to establish a permanent religious school
at the 200- year-old synagogue. The synagogue is owned by the
Jerusalem Sephardic Community Committee, which give Elon and the
students permission to occupy it. (ICEJ)

Yesha Store Online: In the beginning of the year, the PA/PLO, along
with Gush Shalom, called for a boycott of products produced in Yesha,
with the argument that every shekel for Yesha is a shekel against
peace. Using the boycott list as a supplier list, Ealan Hirshfeld
started the Yesha Ze Kan store, a store selling products produced in
the Jewish settlements of Judea, Samaria and Gaza, located at the
corner of King George an Jaffa Road in Jerusalem. "I would venture to
say that the relative share of the population of Yesha in Israel's
overall GNP is impressive," Hirshfeld said. "The store offers a broad
selection of products including gift items -- arts, jewelry, etc.,
food products, toys and books as well as many other products from
Yesha. The artists include people who already have a worldwide
reputation, such as Nachshon, as well as artists not yet known to the
general public." Due to the early success of the store, many factories
have had hire more workers to keep up with the demand for products.
Based on this success, he has now opened an online store located at:
http://come.to/yesha. "Our website," Hirshfeld said, "right now offers
a limited selection of products. The prices are in dollars and we have
not yet completed making provisions for secure on line credit card
payment so for the time being payment is by check. The prices are in
dollars and include shipping to North America and Europe. Our plan is
that the website will be much more than a retail store. It will serve
as a showcase for the entire range of Yesha producers -- both of
consumer and industrial goods." (IMRA)

Hi folks...

I'm sorry for taking up list time and space with this.

My place of employment is on strike. However, not being a union
member, I'm more or less compelled to stay in. This effects my
amount of online time and therefore list mail may be a little slow in
being delivered, although I will try to at least send it out twice a
day. The bpr web site will suffer as well in that I won't be able to
work on it much. Hopefully this will be over very soon. This is more
stressful and emotionally draining that I had ever imagined. I would
appreciate your prayers.

I wanted you all to know of my whereabouts should I not be able to
participate and answer personal mail in a reasonable amount of time.
Moza, however, is still available and if you have any questions or
comments about anything at all she can be reached at
research-bpr@philologos.org or moza@butterfly.mv.com.

Again, I'm sorry for taking up your time with this. Please continue
to share your studies on the list so that you may encourage and
strengthen one another in the Word of God. I trust you will also
continue to enjoy the list, as well as each other's company.

Hi guys...

Ed has forwarded an interesting article dealing with the topic of the
"two witnesses" mentioned in Revelation. As I'm sure we all are
aware of, there are many speculations as to their identity, but this
particular article, I feel, is worth a closer look. It appears to be
well thought out and, from what I can tell upon first read, supported
by Scripture. Further examination on the list may be a worthwhile
topic.

The article in question may be found at:

http://www.rmplc.co.uk/eduweb/sites/sbs777/snotes/note1204.html

If for some reason you are unable to access this site, send mail to
either myself or Ed and we'll try to forward you a copy of the
article.

As always, providing a particular URL to the list does not mean that BPR supports,
endorses, or agrees with all the information that may be find at that site.

Well I read that article about the theory on The Covering Angels being the two
witnesses. Initially, I was quite intruiged. BUt after doing some reading and
studying, I am leaning toward this not being the case. All of what was said was well
thought out, except for one little detail. Angels already have their immortal bodies.
And cannot be killed. Even Lucifer who will be thrown into the lake of fire for all
eternity will not die from this. So how are they going to be killed and lay in the
streets of Jerusalem for 3.5 days?

Be Blessed Yall,

Alan

Hi All,
I agree! There is no scriptural evidence that I can find that would
validate this theory. The fact that the cherubims were carved from olive
wood is really not enough in light of the fact that Israel is also pictured
as an olive tree in other scriptures. I still think that the witnesses are
called the two olive trees because they are Israelites.

Russina and Japan seek peace

Weekend News Today By Andra Brack Source: Ha'aretz

Sun Oct 18 , 1998 -- Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov met
Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura on Saturday and said the two
countries would continue working toward a peace treaty formally ending
World War II hostilities. Russia and Japan have never signed a treaty
ending World War II hostilities and have a bitter territorial dispute
over a group of islands. The two sides also discussed whether Tokyo
would hand over the next two $800 million installments of a Japanese
loan package before the end of the year. But it said officials
declined to say what had been decided. The Japanese credit is part of
an overall package put together with the International Monetary Fund
and others to help Russia tackle a deep economic crisis. After the
talks, Primakov said Obuchi's visit would be a "landmark in the
process of moving Russo-Japanese relations to true good neighborliness
and partnership"

Temple rebuilding goes mainstream, report says

Weekend News Today By Staff Writer Source: New Yok Times (AP)

Sun Oct 18 , 1998 -- At the foot of the Temple Mount, dozens of people
waving Israeli flags and blowing rams' horns crowded around a man with
a knitted skullcap shouting into a bullhorn. The time has come to
rebuild the Jewish Temple destroyed two millenniums ago, said Gershon
Solomon of the Temple Mount Faithful, a group that advocates razing
the Al Aqsa and Dome of the Rock mosques now on the site. Underscoring
his point, Solomon brought along a flatbed truck carrying a 4 1/2-ton
marble ``cornerstone'' for a new temple. Israeli police blocked
Solomon at the Moghrabi Gate and prevented the truck parked about 200
yards away from unloading its cargo.

Only a decade ago, people like Solomon were dismissed as eccentrics
on the fringe of Israeli society. Most observant Jews stayed away
from the Temple Mount, heeding rabbis' rulings that they cannot tread
on such holy soil unless they have undergone an extensive ritualof
purification. However, in recent years those seeking to reclaim the
Temple Mount for the Jews have increasingly moved into the
mainstream, winning support from some rabbis and prominent
politicians. A Jerusalem convention of the movement in September drew
some 1,000 people -- double last year's turnout -- who cheered
speaker after speaker demanding that the building of a new temple.

In the convention center, musicians in biblical costumes coaxed
wailing sounds from replicas of silver trumpets played at ceremonies
in the ancient Jewish Temple before it was torn down by Roman
soldiers. A large oil painting depicted a fantasy scene of Jews
filing out of 20th century buses into a new shrine. In recent years,
the movement to reclaim the Temple Mount has gained a new
respectability. In 1995, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, at the
time the opposition leader, asserted the right of Jews to pray on the
Temple Mount. At the gathering of the temple movement in September,
Deputy Education Minister Moshe Peled sent videotaped greetings.

Dutch government presses ahead with proposal to legalise "assisted
suicide"

Weekend News Today By Staff Writer Source: Electronic Telegraph

Sun Oct 18 , 1998 -- More than 10,000 people in Holland have started
carrying anti-euthanasia "passports" because they are frightened of
being killed prematurely by over-enthusiastic doctors if they fall
ill. The move comes as the newly-elected Dutch government presses
ahead with a proposal to legalise "assisted suicide" by doctors, the
first of its kind in Europe. It is estimated that every year up to
25,000 people die when their treatment is terminated on medical
grounds. Although euthanasia is technically illegal in Holland,
doctors who assist with voluntary euthanasia rarely face prosecution.
As a consequence an estimated 3,000 patients die each year after they
have specifically requested that their lives be terminated.

The "declaration of life" cards, which are being distributed by
pro-life groups throughout Holland, carry the words: "I request that
no medical treatment be withheld on the grounds that the future
quality of my life will be diminished, because I believe that this is
not something that human beings can judge. I request that under no
circumstances a life-ending treatment be administered because I am of
the opinion that people do not have the right to end life."

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Geri Halliwell, formerly known as Ginger
Spice, will become a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Population Fund
in Britain, a U.N. spokesman said Monday. Halliwell in May quit the
Spice Girls, Britain's biggest pop phenomenon since the Beatles,
because of differences with her fellow singers. She will appear at a
news conference at the United Nations Tuesday and is to campaign for
UNFPA with European Organizations on reproductive rights, U.N.
spokesman Yasuhiro Ueki said. Considered the former leader of the
Spice Girls, who have sold 30 million albums, Halliwell was noted for
the biggest voice, the skimpiest outfits and most extrovert

EARTH CHARTER DRAFT & WORLD ANIMAL DAY

I. Earth Charter Draft

An Earth Charter is being drafted for presentation at the State of the
World Forum later this month. Author Samantha Smith states:

"This website is critical for the purpose of studying the Earth
Charter draft, that will be presented at Gorbachev's State of the
World Forum the end of this month, by Steven Rockefeller. This charter
has been referred to by Maurice Strong as the 'Magna Carta for the
Earth' and will have serious consequences for us all, negating any
'rights' we have as human beings. It provides the pagan/pantheistic
basis for the 'rights' of a 'living earth.'"

Maurice Strong' interview on the People's Earth Charter is cloaked in
language typical of totalitarian schemes (i.e, "People's Republic of
China"):

http://www.earthcharter.org/welcome/mstrong.htm

"I challenged governments to produce an Earth Charter. They made
progress. They created a Rio Declaration. But, they did not complete
the job of agreeing on an Earth Charter, and therefore people are now
taking up this. People, through their organizations and through the
Earth Council, who is working with many others around the world to
help ensure that this task of formulating a universal Earth Charter,
...will command the support of people throughout the world and by
commanding their support, as the true voice of people -- after all,
the United Nation's Charter begins "We the People..." Well, the Earth
Charter is going to be a product of people's commitments, and those
commitments will clearly serve to motivate governments."

After the 1992 Earth Summit Conference, this same Maurice Strong
privately revealed his projection for the collapse of industrialized
nations: http://turnercom.com/jdk/canal25.html

"'This group of world leaders form a secret society to bring about a
world collapse. It's February. They're all at Davos. These aren't

"The Earth Charter was one of the expected outcomes of the Earth

were to have been based.

"The call for such a document caught the imagination of individuals
and organizations around the world, as well as some governments.
During the two years leading up to and including the Earth Summit,
NGOs and government delegations from around the world worked on
elements of the Charter. Still, governments could not reach agreement
on an Earth Charter and instead adopted the Rio Declaration on
Environment and Development, which valuable as it was, did not meet
the expectations of a Charter."

[The Earth Charter Benchmark Draft calls for non-violence and balanced

"The choice is before us: to care for Earth or to participate in the
destruction of ourselves and the diversity of life. We must reinvent
industrial-technological civilization, finding new ways to balance
self and community, having and being, diversity and unity, short-term
and long-term, using and nurturing...

"Reaffirm that Indigenous and Tribal Peoples have a vital role in the

"Practice non-violence, recognizing that peace is the wholeness

II. World Animal Day
http://www.animal.discovery.com/animalpages/wad-98/wad.html

Celebration of World Animal Day, which falls on the first Sunday in
October, is being encouraged in church services. On October 6, 1991,
at the New Age St. John the Divine Cathedral in New York City, 6,000
congregants and their pets celebrated the feast of St. Francis of
Assisi who honored Creation and the interrelatedness of all things.
Last Sunday, a Dutch Roman Catholic Church in The Hague held a similar
service.

The infiltration of pantheism into the Church via New Age change
agents is preparing Christians for agreement to a "People's Earth
Charter." To this end, a Program for the Earth Charter Millennium
Campaign is planned, "To involve various sectors of society to
translate Earth Charter principles into professional and
organizational work ethics, educational curriculum, RELIGIOUS
MINISTRIES, development plans and personal commitments on sustainable
consumption and lifestyles..." (caps added)

Evangelical leader, Tony Campolo, has been on the vanguard of this
campaign for several years. Campolo also honors St. Francis of Assisi
and espouses the New Age philosophy of pantheism in his book, PARTLY
RIGHT. A popular speaker at youth conferences sponsored by Campus
Crusades, other evangelical organizations and churches, Campolo has
been described as a theistic evolutionist, who draws his insights from
Karl Marx, Paul Tillich, Martin Buber, and Teilhard de Chardin.
Biblical Discernment Ministries states:

http://www.rapidnet.com/~jbeard/bdm/exposes/campolo/campolo.htm

"There has never been much doubt that Campolo is an environmentalist
wacko (which ties in nicely with his New Age pantheism). Campolo even
goes so far as to call environmentalism a fruit of the Spirit (from an
article titled 'Rescuing the Earth,' in Salt & Light, a 1993
political-activism book edited by David J. Gyertson): 'Spirituality
and creation-care are tied together. To be properly committed to the
one should lead us inevitably to the other.' [Campolo also thinks
Christians should form a "Christian Green Party"--Chapter 11 of How to
Rescue the Earth Without Worshiping Nature, titled "The Greening of
the Church.']"

Today's ENI report on The Hague's Roman Catholic celebration of World

Liberal Dutch Christianity can include animals too ENI-98-0452

By Piet Halma The Hague, 6 October (ENI)--A Roman Catholic parish in
the Dutch city of The Hague has held a highly unusual service at which
the barking of dogs almost drowned out the prayers of the priest at
the altar.

The service, on 4 October, organised to mark World Animal Day
(werelddierendag in Dutch), is a special day of celebration for the
millions of pet-owners in The Netherlands. The date also marked the
feast day of St Francis of Assisi, the saint most known for his care
of animals.

Dozens of dogs, with their owners, including Roman Catholics,
Protestants and non-Christians, crowded into the church. The
congregation also included cats, rabbits, mice, rats, birds, and fish
(in bowls). Some members of the congregation had brought toy animals
to the service.

Some of the animals were carried into the church on a replica of
Noah's ark, while children sang a hymn about the man who, according to
the biblical account in Genesis, saved the animals from the flood by
bringing them into the ark.

C. Dernee, the priest leading the service, did not object to the noise
from the animals and birds in the congregation. "This service is our
way of saying we love to keep animals," he said. "We promise to take
good care of them, because the animals also care for us. This is what
God intended."

When the barking of the dogs became particularly loud, Dernee told the
congregation: "Dogs have their own way of praying."

After a brief sermon, the pet-owners promised with an enthusiastic
"Yes" to continue caring for their pets. The priest and his assistants
blessed all the pets by spraying holy water on the congregation. Fish
were blessed by drops of holy water added to their bowls.

After the service four pigeons were released.

But some cat-owners, who complained about the number of dogs present,
said they would probably stay away next year.

The service fits in with the view in many western European countries
that domestic animals are part of the family and have rights, like
other family members, to holidays, medical care, good food and -
apparently - pastoral care. Each year Dutch people spend 1.5 million
guilders (US$0.8 million) on food and care for their pets. The editor
of a pet magazine recently wrote about the "humanising" of animals,
and described pets as the new consumers.

However, other statistics suggest that some pets are getting too much
care - almost half of all domestic animals in The Netherlands are
overweight. [426 words]

Pantheism at St. John

"It is at [Madeline] L'Engle's church of worship that the doors of St.
John's opened one Sunday and in waltzed Mignon the elephant, wearing a
flower necklace. Behind her, in decreasing sizes, were a 'camel, a
horse, a burro, a llama, a goat, a monkey, a goose, a turkey, a
parrot, a python and assorted smaller animals. Their handlers wore
Franciscan robes, armed with brooms and buckets, and herded them down
the aisle to be blessed.

"From the pulpit, the dean of the Cathedral, James Parks Morton, said
that animals were there 'to celebrate Creation" and the
inter-relatedness of all things. Morton quoted Ghandi regarding
the sins of irresponsible earth-keeping, while six thousand animal
lovers and their pets gathered before him. The 6 October 1991 gala
event was held in celebration of the Feast of St. Francis. 'God bless
the universe and all the creatures in it, great and small," proclaimed
Morton.

"This was all happening, no less, to the musical backdrop of Paul
Winter's Consort performing the Earth Mass, which included the cries
of whales and wolves. All the while, the Omega Liturgical Dance
Company (also known as the Forces of Nature Dance Company) went
leaping up and down the aisles at this bizarre cathedral circus. The
Forces of Nature rehearse six nights a week in their studio in the
Cathedral's crypt.11, Paul Winter's orchestra is well-known for
performing the Winter Solstice Celebration (for the past thirteen
years) to crowds as large as twelve thousand people.

"Needless to say, not everyone enjoyed the animal service. There were
those who felt it was a desecration of something supposed to be
sacred. Some were appalled. The majority, however, ruled that
'zaniness is next to godliness."

"A fellow researcher supplied the authors with an article, from which
the following was excerpted, provid ing an additional glimpse of the
strange goings-on in the sanctuary: 'Just before the high altar at St.
John's is a real-live, gurgling swamp, complete with the native
plants, fish erustaceans, and uncounted micro-organisms that give
these ecosystems their remarkable life-nurturing abilities." This
little feature, that lets one sit with a clear view of the altar and
watch the fish, was constructed by the Gaia Institute, also based in
the Cathedral."

Do we want to?

"The more things change, the more they remain the same," is
cliched, huh? The story of the Tower of Babel is read publicly

A scholar is looking for Sodom and Gomorrah. English-born Michael
Sanders, who lives in Irvine, Calif., says NASA satellite
photographs may show that the lost cities were destroyed in a
catastrophe about 5,000 years ago, and that their ruins exist
beneath the salty waters of the Dead Sea, the London Times said.
Sanders, who bases his theory on research that began 30 years
ago, hopes to lead an expedition next year to the 1,200-ft.
depths of the sea. He will use the two-man minisubmarine that
discovered the sunken liner Lusitania, examining shapes that
appear on the photographs like ruined buildings. "If we can come
up with proof that one of the most unlikely stories in the Old
Testament was actually true, that will have a very profound
impact on how people view the truth of Bible," he said.

The ancient prayer labyrinth is making a comeback. It is a
winding walk that leads to a central point and back and is meant
to give people time to practice quiet, meditative prayer.
Christian churches have used the tradition since at least 350
A.D., and many labyrinths are modeled after one inlaid in a floor
of France's gothic Chartres Cathedral.
...A modern version of a prayer labyrinth is set up in the
fellowship hall at Palm Springs United Methodist Church in
Hialeah, Fla. It takes about 20 minutes to walk the canvas circle
36 feet in diameter. A snaking path that leads to a flower design
is printed in the center, the Miami Herald said. Soft music
plays. Written materials are made available to walkers from the
church and the community.

Witches in Salem, Mass., are protesting campaign ads by Gov. Paul
Cellucci. The ads mock opponent Scott Harshbarger, the state's
attorney general, for his order banning Christmas decorations in
public areas of his office and his threat to prosecute
evangelists for witnessing to witches. The ads feature Santa
Claus, the Easter Bunny, and a warty, pointy-hatted witch
standing in a police lineup. When the commercial suggests
Harshbarger favors witches over Christian holidays the witch
throws back her head and cackles.
..."I was so infuriated...I was just portrayed, along with every
other witch across the country, as some fantasy creature, and
that's appalling to me," said Cheryl Sulyma-Masson, leader of the
Witches' League for Public Awareness in Rehoboth. Modern witches
"are real people. They're doctors, they're lawyers, they're
mothers, they're fathers," she said.

John Paul II celebrated his 20th anniversary as pope. More than
20,000 Poles attended a Mass Oct. 17 celebrating the 20th
anniversary of the elevation of the Archbishop of Krakow Karol
Wojtyla to pontiff in 1978 as the spiritual head of more than 1
billion Catholics. "Pray for me so that I can complete the work
with which God entrusted me," the 78-year-old pope said.
...John Paul II was the first non-Italian elected pope in 455
years. He has taken conservative positions on issues such as the
sanctity of human life and the male priesthood, and has appointed
bishops who reflect his views. He has traveled more than any
pontiff, visiting 117 countries during his tenure, and is one of
only a dozen popes to serve 20 years or more, the Associated
Press said. Many credit the pope with helping topple communism in
his home country, Poland, and the rest of eastern Europe with his
support of Poland's Solidarity labor union against the communist
government. He survived a 1981 assassination attempt in St.
Peter's Square when a Turkish gunman shot him twice in the
stomach.

Air Force News Service

Released: 20 Oct 1998

14th Air Force experts explain upcoming meteor storm
By Capt. Robyn Chumley, 21st Space Wing Public Affairs

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AFPN) -- When the much-anticipated
Leonids meteoroid storm strikes in mid-November, the Air Force will
bank on a handful of experts to have prepared for the difficulties the
service's space assets could face.

Experts like Capt. Bruce Bookout, who first watched Leonids' bright
bolide meteors brighten the nighttime sky while growing up in Florida.
A self-admitted astronomy junkie, Bookout jumped at the chance to work
the first Leonids meteoroid storm in 32 years.

"My first reaction was, 'Oh, jeez, we've got a thousand questions to
answer,'" he said of the initially mind-boggling task. Bookout,
assigned to the 21st Space Wing at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo., was
the chief of space surveillance analysis for the 21st Operations
Support Squadron there. His charter was to examine what would happen
to the wing's ground-based missile warning and space surveillance
assets during the Leonids storm.

What are the Leonids?

It begins with the comet Temple-Tuttle -- a fairly "young" comet that
is a couple hundred thousand years old. Comets -- essentially dirty
snowballs -- start spewing off ice and dust as they near the sun's
heat, creating streams of house-dust sized meteoroids behind them. The
comet Temple-Tuttle is no different, except that its 33-year-long
elliptical orbit around the sun -- which takes it almost to Uranus --
leaves clouds of meteoroids right in the Earth's annual orbital path.

This intersection with the comet's meteoroids produces a celestial
fireworks display -- an annual meteor shower that appears to the
casual observer to emanate from the constellation Leo. It's a fairly
routine event, with these dust particles producing a show much like
the summertime Perseids. Ordinary, that is, until the Earth's track
around the sun crosses comet Temple-Tuttle's tail just months after
the comet blew past the sun, something that will happen Nov. 17.

The result: The potential for one son-of-a-gun sandstorm in space for
satellites. Thirty-two years ago, the Leonids produced an estimated
150,000 meteoroids per hour. Researchers place this year's storm count
at anywhere from a stormy 10,000 per hour, to the relatively tame 200
per hour. In comparison, an average shower -- Earth encounters about
12 of them a year -- tends to be benign, with only 10-15 meteoroids an
hour.

But in 1966, there were only 100 active satellites in space; now there
are more than 500. With grains of sand averaging the diameter of a
human hair traveling at 43 miles per second, an impact on a satellite
might put a hole in it -- or, of more significance, create an
electrostatic discharge that could potentially cripple a satellite's
electronics.

That's where Bookout and others like Capt. Joel McCray come into play.
Two years ago, McCray's commander sent him to a University of Western
Ontario conference led by noted Leonids expert, Peter Brown. He left
the conference cautiously concerned about what the 1998 or 1999 storms
could do to the Air Force's space assets.

For 18 months, the chief of the requirements element in the 55th Space
Weather Squadron, 50th Space Wing, Schriever AFB, Colo., immersed
himself in Leonids. McCray's early pivotal role was gathering experts
from each Air Force satellite system together to explore the storms
potential.

As early research unfolded, anxiety amplified -- particularly anxiety
with the speed of those pencil-tip size particles. Meteoroids normally
travel at about 12 miles per second; but because of the relationship
of the Earth's orbit to Temple-Tuttle's orbit, Leonids meteoroids
rocket past at the speed of a 22-caliber bullet.

The collision causes a "plasma discharge," which is when a particle
impact creates an electrostatic discharge that gives a voltage spike
on the surface.

If an impact occurs; if the resulting impact causes a discharge; if
the discharge gets inside the satellite vs. escaping into the space
environment; if the path of that discharge hits an electrical
component, then the result could be a fried satellite. But that's a
lot of "ifs."

Regardless of the uncertainty, the Air Force's Leonids Tiger Team -- a
team of space operations experts -- is considering and preparing for
each potential "worst-case" scenario, said Capt. David Hembroff, a
space environment operations officer at 14th Air Force, Vandenberg
AFB, Calif.

To minimize the storm's damage, the Tiger Team determined a
comprehensive series of mitigation strategies to protect space assets
and allow the Air Force to continue its vital missions. These
strategies include normal precautions such as powering down
unnecessary onboard electronics and reducing a satellite's
cross-section.

"Plan for the worst, hope for the best," Hembroff said of the Tiger
Team's approach.

Bookout likened it to classic military strategy. "We gathered intel on
the 'enemy,' and prepared for the 'enemy,'" he said. "We could be
preparing for the biggest nothing -- but we will be fully prepared for
something and hope for nothing."

Before the storm, satellite anomaly resolution teams [SART] will stand
by to quickly resolve any problem that arises. A SART comprises a
satellite system's contractors, engineers and operations personnel,
and it usually forms to analyze what happened to a satellite after a
problem occurs. Maj. John Kress, operations officer with the 821st
Space Group at Buckley Air National Guard Base, Colo., expects to be
part of a SART during the Nov. 17 storm.

Kress is the Tiger Team's Defense Support Program satellite expert.
Though he initially thought Leonids "a big deal," as his analysis
increased his pucker-factor with the storm decreased.

"Although there is such a difference in analysis, it all comes down to
probabilities," he said.

An unfortunate reality, Lt. Col. Doug Hine said of the probability
factor. "That's why we've done such a thorough analysis
across-the-board with our satellite systems, because you don't know
exactly how things will play out," the chief of current operations for
14th AF said. "We have to be prepared for every contingency."

While most of the key players on the Tiger Team were "subject matter
experts" already -- and astronomy hobbyists to boot -- Master Sgt.
Terry Rich joined the team with barely a surface understanding of the
difference between a meteoroid and a meteorite. A weather forecaster
by trade, and 13 years of computer programming under his belt, Rich's
role was to develop a 3-D computer modeling product to look at
potential places a satellite could be hit. His information helped
satellite operators compile a 245-page contingency plan.

Building that contingency plan was a tremendous learning curve for
Rich, noncommissioned officer in charge of the weapons and tactics
flight for the 50th Operations Squadron at Schriever AFB.

"I knew nothing about Leonids before this," he said. "Now I'm
considered one of the 50th Space Wing's experts."

He found it fascinating from day one.

"Consider the speed (of the meteoroids) and the damage it can cause,"
he said. "A grain of table salt could punch a hole in a satellite. It
amazes me that something that small and that light could do that kind
of damage."

Bookout considers the Leonids storm "a good thing."

"The more we're out in space, the more we need to learn about this,"
he said. "It will help us realize how many 'threats' in space will
make it tough to do our job. It's a learning process that we need to
go through."

It is an important learning process because the Earth will cross comet
Temple-Tuttle's path again in 1999 and some predict next year's storm
will be worse than this year's.

"People can debate all day long about which year will be worse,"
Hembroff said. "Let the scientists debate the scientists. We know the
what and when about the storm. We have to consider the worst-case
scenario -- that we're going to get hit -- then prepare for that, wait
and see what happens."

Two years of work for this Tiger Team, and it all boils down to one
nail-biting day. The chance that one of the Air Force's satellites
will be hit Nov. 17 is relatively small, Hembroff said. "But the fact
there is a chance means we have to be prepared."

shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the
foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not,
and yet is.
Rev 17:9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven
mountains, on which the woman sitteth.
Rev 17:10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the
other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
Rev 17:11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is
of the seven, and goeth into perdition.
Rev 17:12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have
received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the
beast.
Rev 17:13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto
the beast.
Rev 17:14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome
them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him
are called, and chosen, and faithful.

These verses describe that the beast the woman rides on in Revelation 17 is
the antichrist of Revelation 13. This beast's name is Apollyon:<P>

Rev 9:11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless
pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue
hath his name Apollyon.

The beast is the one that "shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go
into perdition." What is the origin of Apollyon? He is most likely of Greek
origin, otherwise, why make the distinction in the following verse:

Rev 9:11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless
pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue
hath his name Apollyon.

To say this because Revelation was written in Greek does not seem sufficient
reason to make this point. In the fifth trumpet, we see the "locusts" come
out of the bottomless pit, with Apolyyon being mentioned as the leader of
these, but Apolyyon is also the one who kills the two witnesses:

Rev 11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that
ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall
overcome them, and kill them.

In Revelation 20, we see Satan locked up in the bottomless pit:

Rev 20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the
bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
Rev 20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the
Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
Rev 20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a
seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand
years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

Notice it is NOT the beast - Apollyon - who is locked up in the bottomless
pit at the end of the tribulation period. It is the Dragon, Satan. But where
is Apolyyon? He is king over the locusts of the bottomless pit, he burns the
woman with fire, and he kills the two witnesses, but he is never mentioned
again?

It would be difficult to say that Abaddon/Apolyyon is not the beast of
Revelation 13. IF that is true, the beast coming out of the sea is also
Apollyon, the sea being where the bottomless pit is located. The definition
complements that:

BOTTOMLESS 12. abussos, ab'-us-sos; from G1 (as a neg. particle) and a var.
of G1037; depthless, i.e. (spec.) (infernal) "abyss":--deep, (bottomless)
pit.

BOTTOMLESS 1037. buthos, boo-thos'; a var. of G899; depth, i.e. (by impl.)
the sea:--deep.

PIT 5421. phrear, freh'-ar; of uncert. der.; a hole in the ground (dug for
obtaining or holding water or other purposes), i.e. a cistern or well; fig.
an abyss (as a prison):--well, pit.

Isaiah mentioned one who has gone down to the pit and that was slain with
the sword, just as the antichrist appears to be depicted in Revelation:

Isa 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!
how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
Isa 14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I
will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount
of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
Isa 14:14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the
most High.
Isa 14:15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
Isa 14:16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider
thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake
kingdoms;
Isa 14:17 That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities
thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?
Isa 14:18 All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory,
every one in his own house.
Isa 14:19 But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and
as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a SWORD, that go
down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet.
Isa 14:20 Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast
destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never
be renowned.

These verses seem to speak of Lucifer, but then about a man as well, which
could be because of a union of some sort where they would be spoken of as
the same. Is this Apollyon the spirit of a man confined in a pit, a man
slain by a sword as Revelation 13 describes? You don't bury demons, yet this
speaks of a burial. The only head of empires that ruled over Jerusalem in
the Old Testament that was killed with a sword was Sennacherib. It was
Isaiah who prohesied chapter 14 in the time of Sennacherib:

2 Ki 19:6 And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus
saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which
the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.
2 Ki 19:7 Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour,
and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the SWORD
in his own land. . . .
2 Ki 19:36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned,
and dwelt at Nineveh.
2 Ki 19:37 And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of
Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the
SWORD: and they escaped into the land of Armenia. And Esarhaddon his son
reigned in his stead.

I want to close with something I am not sure of, but Revelation 6:8 says,

Rev 6:8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him
was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over
the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with
death, and with the beasts of the earth.

Strong's defines Hell as:

HELL 86. haides, hah'-dace; from G1 (as a neg. particle) and G1492; prop.
unseen, i.e. "Hades" or the place (state) of departed souls:--grave, hell.

Notice "Hell" is defined as "Hades" in this verse. Now let's look at the
meaning of "Abaddon":

ABADDON 3. Abaddon, ab-ad-dohn'; of Heb. or. [H11]; a destroying
angel:--Abaddon.

ABADDON 11. 'abaddown, ab-ad-done'; intens. from H6; abstr. a perishing;
concr. Hades:--destruction.

Notice the second definition which gives the origins of this word:
"concretely, 'Hades.'" How can Hell or Hades follow after the rider on the
green horse? If it is a person. "Hades" personified could be Abaddon/Apollyon.

Till now, I have in the past confused the RED DRAGON in Revelation 12 with
the BEAST of Revelation 17 named Abaddon or Apollyon. They are not the same.
The Dragon GIVE HIS power, authority and throne TO THE Beast. The Beast is
Abaddon, the Dragon is Satan. Remembering Isaiah 14 again, is Apolyyon the
spirit of a man? Or a powerful fallen angel of some type? And why is he
never mentioned again? Doesn't he end up in the lake of fire? I believe he
may not be mentioned again or as being thrown into the lake of fire because
he is the antichrist, the beast, thrown into the lake of fire when Jesus
returns. Satan, then, is locked up in the bottomless pit for 1,000 years.
It's something to think about.

EU and Vatican currency issue

Weekend News Today By Andra Brack Source: Washington Post

Wed Oct 21 , 1998 -- The European Union is pondering whether to let
its small neighbors, including the Vatican, issue their own euros. A
French newspaper added to the debate by reporting Wednesday that Paris
would not recognize any euro coins stamped with the image of the pope
when the currency begins circulating in 2002. Discussion were held
within the 15-nation EU about the impact of the single currency plan
on the group's smaller neighbors. Spokesman Patrick Child at EU
headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, said the nations must decide what
to do about the Vatican and San Marino, both inside Italy and both of
which use the Italian lira as their money. Monaco, a tiny principality
at the edge of France, uses French francs as its money. The euro will
be launched Jan. 1 in 11 of the EU nations, but will not replace
national currencies for three more years.

Israel preparing for increases in immigration

Weekend News Today By Andra Brack Source: IsraelWire

Wed Oct 21 , 1998 -- Absorption Minister Yuli Edelshtein stated
yesterday in a meeting of the Knesset Immigration and Absorption
Committee that a joint-ministerial committee is working on a plan for
a potential increase in waves of immigration. MK Naomi Blumenthal,
said that hundreds of potential families for immigration have turned
to the Jewish Agency, but are not receiving answers or help fast
enough. They must wait two months for an initial meeting. "This is a
crucial stage which can make or break the decision on immigration to
Israel. Minister Edelshtein presented the Knesset committee with an
overview of his ministry's policies. He stated that a large increase
in immigration is anticipated, and that the government is making plans
to facilitate absorbing large numbers of immigrants. Plans are being
made for a wave of 80,000 immigrants per year, and for 120,000.

MK Shmuel Halpert (United Torah Judaism Party) presented to the
committee statistics from the Central Office of Statistics that show
that 53% of the immigrants from the CIS are non-Jews. He said, "We
desire that every Diaspora Jew move to Israel. But in a situation in
which more non-Jews than Jews arrive, the Jewish nature of the State
will be effected, and we could become a multi-religious nation. I
know that there those who want the immigration of even non-Jews, to
limit a religious majority. It is necessary to establish a better
control system to prevent immigration of non-Jews."

US missiles grounded by phone signals
By David Sapsted in New York

BILLIONS of dollars worth of United States air defence systems around
the world - including those in Patriot missiles and unmanned Predator
spy planes - are useless because they operate on the same frequency
as local telephones.

In a catalogue of disasters listed in an internal Department of
Defence review, the United States military is accused of installing
about 90 systems in Europe, the Middle East and Asia without bothering
to check if they could be used in conjunction with local telephone
services.

It has led to American radar in Bahrain being rendered inoperable
because it interferes with telecommunications equipment, while Patriot
missiles have been grounded in Korea because their radio, radar and
data-link frequencies are the same as local mobile phones.

In Japan, pagers used by American forces have been found to interfere
with aeronautical communications, and even baby monitors on American
bases in Germany have been outlawed after disrupting telephone
services.

Some hugely-expensive American defence systems throughout the world
"cannot be utilised to their full capability. . . In some cases, fully
functional equipment sits idle while its useful life expires," says
the damning report from the department's inspector general's office.

The report, quoted in Defense Week magazine, adds: "At least 89
telecommunications systems were deployed within the European, Pacific
and south-west Asian theatres without the proper frequency
certification and host-nation approval."

In a written response, the Pentagon conceded that the problems were
serious and said steps were being taken to overcome them. It added
that the United States had little control over what radio frequencies
nations used and said that sometimes frequencies changed after a
system had been installed.

The report said that some countries were greatly angered. German
legislators had passed a law enabling American equipment to be seized
and the users arrested if they operated systems on a frequency that
had not been approved by local telecommunications authorities.

*** Prodi makes the grade for EU top job - Santer

VARESE, Italy (Reuters) - European Commission President Jacques
Santer said Thursday he believed former Italian Prime Minister Romano
Prodi was a credible candidate to succeed him when his term ends next
year. "Prodi's work as prime minister was extremely effective and for
that reason I believe he is a great European political personality who
can, of course, be on a par with all the other, many, candidates, for
the important functions at (EU) level," Santer told a conference of
industrialists in northern Italy. Santer, a Christian Democrat from
Luxembourg and in the job since 1995, has already indicated that he
would be happy to stand again for the European Commission's top job.

*** Spooky teleportation study brings future closer

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - They may not be able to ask Scotty to beam them
up yet, but California researchers said Thursday they had completed
the first "full" teleportation experiment. They said they had
teleported a beam of light across a laboratory bench. They did not
physically transport the beam itself, but transmitted its properties
to another beam, creating a replica of the first beam. "We claim this
is the first bona fide teleportation," Jeff Kimble, a physics
professor at the California Institute of Technology, said in a
telephone interview. Kimble thinks the experiment shows quantum
teleportation can eventually transform everyday life. See

French calls for exorcist

Weekend News Today
By Andra Brack
Source: Washington Post

Thu Oct 22 , 1998 -- About 50 villagers in Delain saw strange events,
vases explode and candlesticks soar through the town church beginning
last weekend as townspeople were re-arranging the church for an
orchestra concert. Moving the altar a few inches seemed to trigger the
flotation and explosion of holy objects, witnesses said. They called
the police and a local exorcist. The exorcist, the Rev. Max de
Wasseige of the Archdiocese of Besancon, was called in by the
archbishop -- but he didn't hold a seance. ``It was more like a prayer
session where people testified to what they saw,'' Marceaux said.

Freshman sent home for casting spell

Weekend News Today
By Andra Brack
Source: Washington Post

Thu Oct 22 , 1998 -- A 15-year-old Baltimore freshman was sent home
because school officials considered an alleged spell a verbal threat
that violates the student discipline code. She was allowed back to
school after the meeting. admits she practices witchcraft, as does her
mother. But she knows better that to cast a spell. ``Casting a spell
isn't something that just any novice is going to know how to do,''
said Colleen Harper, a transsexual who was Jamie's biological father
but now calls herself the girl's mother. Ms. Harper called it all a
misunderstanding - and a perfect example of misconceptions about
witchcraft, or Wicca, the modern form of paganism that she and her
daughter practice. Wicca is more like a folklore-tinged herbalism that
dictates that ``whatever you do comes back to you threefold,'' she
said. Another student, Miss Rassen, was in hysterics Tuesday when she
thought she had been hexed. The expelled student and some friends were
sitting beneath a tree on school grounds Tuesday when they noticed the
names of other girls scrawled on a wall. A friend crossed out the
names, then wrote, ``Is life a virtue of death?'' When Miss Rassen saw
her name crossed out and the question, she ran to Principal Earl L.
Lee saying the other girl had cast a spell on her.

Chinese scientists support selective human breeding

Weekend News Today
By Andra Brack
Source: BBC

Thu Oct 22 , 1998 -- A survey of Chinese scientists working in the
field of genetics suggests they overwhelmingly support eugenics to
improve public health. The theory of eugenics suggests that the human
race can be improved by selective breeding. Almost unanimously - by
91% - the scientists said that couples who carried the same
disease-causing genetic mutation should not be allowed to have
children. More than three-quarters believed that governments should
require pre-marital tests to detect carriers of hereditary disease.
There was also strong backing for the genetic testing of children to
see if they are susceptible to problems such as alcoholism.

Xin Mao, who now works at the Institute of Cancer Research, defended
Chinese attitudes, saying cultural differences should be taken into
account. "The Chinese culture is quite different, and things are
focused on the good ofsociety, not the good of the individual. The
scientists' attitudes were reflected in action later taken by the
Chinese authorities. The year after the survey was held, China
introduced the controversial Maternal and Infant Health Care Law,
which makes pre-marital check-ups compulsory and allows doctors to
order abortions of fetuses with serious defects.

Subject: Movies and their deception
From: bpr-list@philologos.org(BPR)

From: "Moza" <moza@butterfly.mv.com>

This Fall (as at any time of the year, really), Hollywood is giving
us a taste of what's abuzz in American/world culture. The latest
trendy thing is to be spiritual--like Oprah and Madonna.

A breathtaking example of this "spirituality" is "What Dreams May
Come" starring Robin Williams. It's the story of a couple who, after
they've died, go looking for each other because they aren't in the
same place after death (?). They supposedly have the ability to do
whatever they wish in the afterlife and they, of course, choose to be
together. There is absolutely nothing of God in this movie, although
I haven't seen it myself (nor have I seen any of the others)--just
from the commercials and how it is promoted you can get a good idea
what it's all about.

Along these same lines is an animated movie being released called
"The Prince of Egypt." It's the story of Moses (and when you think of
Moses don't you just think of Val Kilmer who is doing the voice for
the character?). Other character voices include: Sandra Bullock ----
Miriam, Ralph Fiennes ----- Rameses, Danny Glover (I'm not sure
what voice he does--maybe God? In other press releases I have seen
Mel Brooks as the unknown character), Jeff Goldblum ----- Aaron,
Steve Martin ------ Hotep, Michelle Pfeiffer -- Tzipporah, Partick
Stewart --- Pharaoh Seti, all perfect examples of Hollywood morality.
The same people who have given Disney their distinctive New Age
voice/sound in "Pocahontas" and "The Lion King" have teamed up to
write many new songs with a tie-in to record sales after the movie is
released. Supposedly this movie has been reviewed by over 300 people
in the "religious" sector with nary a murmur so far. Now movie makers
are pulling the Bible full time into their perversion. The press
releases stress the soundtrack and the fact that they are making a
concerted effort to release it for Christmas.

Another commercial for a movie I have been seeing lately is "The
Siege." "An underground terrorist cell threatens to
blow up New York. After martial law is declared, the FBI leader of an
anti-terrorist task force must team up with a U.S. Army general to
foil their evil scheme." This end-time scenario is saved by--yup, you
guessed it--Bruce Willis. What would planet earth be without Bruce
Willis?

If the movies aren't bad enough, we can always look at that good old
stand-by -- tv. The latest thing to catch my attention is the show
called "Vengeance Unlimited." Apparently someone goes around righting
every "wrong" in society on behalf of the downtrodden, but "vengeance
is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord" (Rom 12:19).

WANTED: "MAN OF FAITH"
The Jewish Leadership movement announced that it was stepping up its
efforts to field a "man of faith" as its candidate for Prime Minister.
Moshe Feiglin, leader of the organization and founder of Zo Artzeinu,
spoke with Arutz-7 earlier this week about the preparations being made
in this direction. Feiglin stressed, "This idea has been in the
planning stages for two years now, and is not at all intended as a
threat to Prime Minister Netanyahu. In fact, it is totally unrelated
to the specific negotiations taking place now at the Wye Plantation.
Whether the Prime Minister makes greater or fewer concessions is not
the issue. The problem doesn't relate to Netanyahu as a person,
either. Even [supposedly more right-of-center candidates] such as
Benny Begin and Uzi Landau do not represent a fundamentally different
alternative."

Feiglin explained, "The entire Zionist enterprise has lost its
direction and sense of purpose. With all due respect to Ben Gurion
and Jabotinsky, their brand of Zionism cannot and will not guide this
nation. We will present a candidate who will re-direct the Jewish
people and the State of Israel to the proper path." Feiglin explained
that a phone-canvassing system is about to begin, "probably by the end
of the week," wherein those who wish to take part in the search and
choice for a "Prime Minister of faith" can call and register. He said
that two candidates are already being considered, "but they have not
yet been announced so as to maximize the pool of potential
supporters." The number to call in Israel is 1-800-613-613.
