RELEASE NO. 99-05

EMBARGOED FOR RELEASE: 8 am (CST) January 8, 1999

FIRST RESULTS FROM SWAS INCLUDE SOME SURPRISES

Water, Water Everywhere: New NASA Satellite Finds Stellar Nurseries to
be Hot and Humid

AUSTIN, TX -- With nearly flawless execution in both its launch and
early operations, the Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite, or SWAS,
has already produced some exciting results, including the discovery
that large amounts of water seem to saturate the interstellar medium,
while, by contrast, molecular oxygen cannot be found.

Launched from a Pegasus XL vehicle on December 5, 1998, SWAS is the
first space borne observatory to operate at submillimeter wavelenghts,
a narrow band of emission lying between infrared and radio on the
electromagnetic spectrum. In only two weeks of observations, SWAS
seems on target for achieving its main goal: to study the molecular
clouds in space, those giant star-forming regions like the one from
which our Sun and Solar System were born.

The news that excites astronomers most is that SWAS has found water
almost everywhere -- and molecular oxygen apparently no where.

"We have seen water in the interstellar medium before, but only in hot
regions," says principal investigator Gary Melnick of the
Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. "SWAS, on the other hand,
has found water in much cooler regions, and that's important because
most of the interstellar medium is cold and that may mean that water
is in a lot more places than we knew."

Equally exciting and revealing, SWAS has so far seen no molecular
oxygen in the interstellar clouds it has observed. In just two weeks
of science observations, SWAS has set the most stringent limits to
date on the amount of molecular oxygen in star-forming clouds. The
apparent absence of oxygen may actually help astronomers pinpoint the
age of those molecular clouds.

"Molecular clouds are like chemical laboratories," says Melnick. "Our
theories tell us oxygen won't appear until the cloud reaches a certain
age. SWAS, in its future observations, will help us test those
theories and determine more about these star factories."

Melnick and his colleagues are also looking forward to using SWAS to
create large-scale maps of different molecules in space. Unlike water
and oxygen, astronomers already know that carbon molecules, including
carnon monoxide, are abundant in the galaxy. SWAS will be able to make
maps of warm molecules across vast swaths of the sky -- something that
is nearly impossible from ground-based facilities.

With its ability to conduct pointed, high-spectral-resolution
observations of molecular clouds that are either sites of ongoing or
future star formation, SWAS may also be able to answer some basic
questions: 1) Where is the oxygen hiding?; 2) How do collapsing clouds
cool so they can form as stars and planets?; and, 3) What is the
internal structure of the clouds?

In addition to the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, the
SWAS project also includes contributors from the University of
Massachusetts at Amherst, Cornell University, Johns Hopkins
University, NASA Ames, and the University of Cologne in Germany.

Revelation 5:8,9 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and
four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of
them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of
the saints. And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take
the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and
hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and
tongue, and people, and nation;

Revelation 14:2,3 And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of
many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the
voice of harpers harping with their harps: And they sung as it were a
new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the
elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty
and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.

Harrari Harps: Music for the Messianic Age

During the time of the first and second Temples, half of the 38,000
Levite priests played on two types of harps, singing melodies that no
one else was permitted to learn. This secret knowledge was passed
from father to son until the destruction of the second Temple. Since
that time the special knowledge of this music has been said to be
"hidden." Because of the sacredness of the music of the Temple
instruments, most Orthodox Jewish communities do not use any
instrumental music in their synagogues as a sign of mourning over the
Temple.

But after a 2,000-year absence, the sounds of the biblical harp have
returned to Jerusalem. The return began when Micah and Shoshanna
Harrari were in California, building and repairing stringed
instruments and studying harp-making. They were planning to immigrate
to Israel when they heard that the mayor of Jerusalem had said,
"Jerusalem needs a harpmaker." Answering this need, the Harraris
decided to research the biblical harp. They discovered that the harp
of King David was considered a symbol of Israel, and believed that
its recreation would serve as a symbol of the future of Israel as
foretold by the prophets of old.

A story is told that when they had first made their replica of the
ten-stringed harp of David, and tuned it to the ancient Hebrew mode,
a rabbi came by to see it. When he saw and heard it he exclaimed that
this was a fulfillment of prophecy, for the Talmud said that this
harp was a symbol of the world to come, and that when the harp was
again sounded in Jerusalem the Messiah would come!

The Harraris believe that they are part of the divine plan in
ushering in the days of the Messiah and world peace, for it is also
written of this harp that the Shir Hadash or New Song, whose main
theme is a world of no more war, will be sung upon it. They also
believe that it is the Asora, the mythical harp spoken of in Jewish
literature "whose song will rise on the day when the world that is to
be will be recreated in one harmonious whole."

From: "Moza" <moza@butterfly.mv.com>

In my reading today I came across the following which may help
explain Rev 3:13:

Revelation 3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the
temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon
him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is
new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I
will write upon him my new name.
--------------------

...when John first introduced the New Jerusalem in Rev 3:12 he spoke
of believers in the New Jerusalem as "a pillar in the temple of My
God." In the ancient Greek world, it was customary to place a pillar
in a temple in order to honor a dignitary. Thus John is not in
contradiction to the later statement omitting a Temple; rather, he
may be implying that the New Jerusalem is something of a Temple
itself. By comparison with all earthly Temples, including the
Millennial Temple, the New Jerusalem is unique. Earthly Temples had
restrictions, even for the righteous, and hid theShekinah in an
innermost chamber away from all human sight. The New Jerusalem is
exceptional in that it has no such limitations, but goes beyond them
just as an archetype exceeds the model. For example, in the New
Jerusalem, God's bond-servants "shall see His face" (Rev 22:4). This
clearly indicates a new access without the previous restrictions
given in Exo 33:20: "You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me
and live!" The text explains that the reason this is possible is
because the New Jerusalem cannot be defiled from within by sin
because there is no curse there (Rev 22:3), nor from without, since
no unclean person can enter (Rev 21:27)...

'End-timers' begin flocking to Jerusalem

Copyright 1999 by Christian Science Monitor
Wed, 6 Jan 1999

In this affluent Jerusalem suburb, home to members of a Denver-based
apocalyptic group arrested by Israeli police Jan. 3, one of the most
prominent views is of the Givat Shaul Cemetery - a large, ultramodern
burial ground.

It is far from any view of Jerusalem's other grave-covered
hilltop that they came to be near: the famed Mount of Olives, where
some Christians believe Jesus will return to the world after 2,000
years.

But Israeli authorities say members of the Concerned Christians group
were planning to provoke shootouts in their neighborhood by opening
fire on police, in the hopes of hastening Armageddon and thus the
Second Coming.

The incident has put the spotlight on the large influx of pilgrims
expected as the millennium approaches and has raised concerns about
how Israel will cope with those who may cause disturbances.

In some ways, Israeli authorities want to pave the way for millennial
celebrations and the boon they could provide for Israel's tourism
industry and international image. But the enthusiasm is tempered by
indications that some groups will look to spark strife to help
fulfill predictions of a final great war - the battle of Gog and
Magog as told in Revelation -in a city where tensions between Arabs
and Jews are already at tinderbox conditions.

In the next year alone, an estimated 4.5 million Christians are
expected to arrive in Israel, some with the hope of witnessing the
``end of days'' as foretold in the Old and New Testaments. The
majority will come in search of a peaceful if inspiring pilgrimage.
But Monte Kim Miller, according to police, will not.

Cult plans

The Concerned Christians leader, like several fringe figures dubbed
``end-timers,'' thinks that the approach of the millennium signals
that the Second Coming is at hand. Mr. Miller reportedly told his
followers he would die in Jerusalem in December 1999 and be
resurrected as the Messiah. Miller's whereabouts, however, remain
unknown. Following the arrests, Israeli authorities have moved to
deport six of the cult's children and five adults. Another three who
have been detained will be deported following a police investigation,
officials say. US authorities say they may have no basis for
detaining the cult members once they return since most of them
haven't committed crimes in the United States.

Israelis, meanwhile, are taking more interest in what may transpire as
the millennium approaches. They want to avoid a repeat of 1969, for
example, when a fundamentalist Christian from Australia set fire to
the Muslim Al Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount - a place holy to
Muslim, Christian, and Jewish faiths. He had hoped to usher in a
building of a Third Temple and the return of Jesus.

This time, Israeli police said yesterday, they will install cameras
and extra metal detectors to protect the mosque.

Another scenario drawing concern is that Christians might camp out
around the Mount of Olives to wait for Jesus' arrival - as did the
masses of pilgrims that poured into Jerusalem around the year 1000.
Experts fear that more extreme groups could grow disappointed with
waiting and advocate mass suicide to hasten his return.

'Jerusalem Syndrome'

Israeli authorities also expect to face increased caseloads of
``Jerusalem Syndrome,'' a term coined by a Jerusalem psychiatrist for
pilgrims experiencing delusions in which they believe they are Jesus
or any one of a number of biblical prophets.

Yair Bar-El, the chairman of the Israeli Psychiatric Society,
estimates that some 40,000 tourists may be judged to need psychiatric
help and as many as 800 may be hospitalized.

But other members of Israel's government committee on 2000, which
includes representatives from the Health, Tourism, Religious Affairs,
and Internal Security Ministries, say that the hype over such
disturbances is out of proportion.

One man who isn't minimizing the possible impact of the coming
millennium on pilgrims is Prof. Richard Landes, a medieval historian
and director of the Center for Millennial Studies at Boston
University. Professor Landes, who founded the center in 1996 to
document the impact of millennial movements through the ages, says
that if history is any barometer, then there should be an upsurge in
apocalyptic expectations here and around the world.

``In 1033, the millennium of the Passion, you have this huge wave of
pilgrims going to Jerusalem with no intention of returning,'' Landes
says. ``Today, one part of apocalyptic Christians is acting locally
and thinking globally; another part is acting globally and going to
Jerusalem.'' Landes says that increased expectations for the ``end of
days,'' while primarily attracting Christians, will include members
of other faiths as well. Muslims recognize Jesus as a prophet, while
some Jewish sources identify the Hebrew calendar year 5760 - which
falls this September -for the coming of the Messiah.

Among those coming to Jerusalem are millions of regular pilgrims, a
``soft core'' of hundreds of thousands who expect that ``big things
will happen,'' and a ``a hard core of apocalyptic believers who will
be working overtime toconvince the rest of them that this is the end
time.''

Landes predicts that increased fervor over the the turn of the
millennium will probably be focused on Jerusalem - but not limited to
it. ``Israel's got a special case, but we can expect apocalyptic
activity of various kinds all over the world. Millennialism is a very
powerful force in the West that has been underestimated because its
messianic prophets have always been wrong. My point is they may have
been wrong, but they're not inconsequential.''

Steps to maintain order

That has Israeli and Palestinians officials - who are in charge of
Bethlehem - looking for ways that to ensure they will be able to keep
matters under control. Israeli police say they have have formed a
special unit to deal with extremist groups and are working in
cooperation with other countries' intelligence services.

Law-enforcement experts say they will be monitoring tourists carefully
at airports to screen out visitors who may be planning to harm
themselves or others upon arrival in Israel.

As millennium frenzy spreads, some Christian organizations say they're
concerned that a few fringe groups could harm the image of mainstream
Christians in Israel.

``There is a legitimate security concern for Israel, and it's right to
be prepared,'' says David Parsons, the spokesman for the
International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem, a Zionist Christian
group. ``But we're trying to reassure Israelis that the vast majority
of the millions of Christians coming here are peace-loving. We do
occasionally get pilgrims who come here - they're standing at a
biblical site they've read about their whole life - and they get a
little overwhelmed by it. ``It's just a matter of telling them,
'You're not Elijah' and getting them back home. Within a day or two
they're fine. But that's got nothing to do with Jerusalem - Jerusalem
just gets a bad name from that.''

I. Cabinet Communique, excerpt on
 Palestinian Statehood
 January 10, 1999
--------------------------------------------------------

(Communicated by the Cabinet Secretariat)

At the weekly Cabinet meeting today (Sunday), 10.1.99:

1. The Prime Minister took note of press reports
according to which Egypt has recommended that Arafat
not declare a Palestinian state, with its capital in
Jerusalem, before the elections in Israel.

The Prime Minister said that these reports come against
the established backdrop of Israeli policy. Certain circles
in Egypt know that such a declaration by Arafat would
be met with a firm response by the Government of Israel
-- and these circles may hope for a change of
government in Israel, on the assumption that Arafat will
then be able to create a Palestinian state and divide
Jerusalem without any serious Israeli opposition. It is
important for the Israeli public to be aware of these
intentions.

The Prime Minister reiterated that the Cabinet intends to
implement its decision concerning Israel's response to a
unilateral declaration of Palestinian statehood or the
division of Jerusalem. Israel reserves the right to extend
Israeli law to the territories under its control if Arafat
and the Palestinians violate the agreements they have
signed and unilaterally declare the establishment of a
Palestinian state.

The Prime Minister added that this issue will be our
primary concern in the near future, as it relates to the
fate of the State of Israel and the future of coming
generations. "We will not allow Arafat and the
Palestinians to determine the borders of our state and the
future of our capital. We will continue to adhere to our
firm and clear policy, which does not allow for the
creation of a Palestinian state in the heart of the Land of
Israel, and we will not allow Jerusalem to be redivided."

Subject: Contrails Mystify, Sicken Americans

   By William Thomas

SEATTLE, Washington, January 8, 1999 (ENS) - Contrails spread by
fleets of jet aircraft in elaborate cross-hatched patterns are sparking
speculation and making people sick across the United States.

Washington state resident William Wallace became ill with severe
diarrhea and fatigue after watching several multi-engine jets spend
New Year's day laying cloud lines in an east to west grid pattern. A
neighbor working outside came down with similar symptoms. But their
wives, who remained indoors, suffered no ill effects from the
inexplicable maneuvers which observers liken to high-altitude "crop-
dusting" by unidentifed multi-engine aircraft.

Condensation trails, called contrails, are generated at altitudes high
enough for water droplets to freeze in a matter of seconds and not
quickly evaporate - typically where the temperatures are below -38
degrees Celcius.

Contrails can form through the addition of water vapor to the air from
the jet engine exhaust. Even tiny nuclei released in the exhaust fumes
may be sufficient to generate ice crystals, and hence, condensation
trails.

Wallace wonders if ethylene dibromide, a highly toxic component of
JP-8 jet fuel, is making people sick. Similar incidents over Las Vegas
last year prompted a US Air Force spokesman to explain that the
military aircraft were "dumping fuel" before landing.

But the strange spray patterns are being reported repeatedly over
towns in Tennessee, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York,
Nevada, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, Oklahoma, Washington state
and California.

Wallace has been watching formations of high-flying jets weave grid-
like contrails above his home since last summer. Each time, "We get a
taste in our mouth," he reports. He and his wife Ann get "kind of tired
and sick," having "no energy to do anything."

After plants began dying around his mountain cabin, "I got real sick
for about three weeks," Wallace relates. "My eyes watered. Fluid came
out of my nose. I could hardly move my arm up above my head to
comb my hair for about a week."

Wallace and his wife are not alone in their plight. In March, 1996, Dr.
Greg Hanford bought an expensive camera and binoculars to keep an
eye on jets spraying white bands above his Bakersfield, California
home. Hanford has counted 40 or 60 jets on some "spray days."

"Everybody seems to be getting sick from it," Hanford told ENS.
"Hackin' and coughin' when you really get nailed with this stuff." The
dentist, many of his patients and two receptionists have repeatedly
contracted severe respiratory infections. Hanford's illness lingered for
five months despite courses of four different antibiotics.

"It's really weird," Hanford says. "You think two jets are going to hit
each other - and then they make an X." The dentist says he has
sometimes seen "furry globular balls" spread downwind in a long
feather from the high-flying aircraft.

Unlike normal contrails, which dissipate soon after a lone jet's
passage, video taken by Wallace and Hanford show eerily silent silver
jets streaming fat contrails from their wingtips in multiple, criss-cross
patterns. But instead of dissipating like normal contrails, these white
jet-trails coalesce into broad cloud-bands that gradually occlude
crystal clear skies.

"Passenger jets don't make contrails that stay and become clouds,"
Wallace observes.

Government officials deny that anything unusual is taking place.
When Hanford called the local airport, tower personnel told him there
was nothing going on." The jets were "just commercial" undergoing
"international flight training."

But a skeptical Hanford responded, "Is the FAA going to allow two
jets to come at each other?"

X'es, overlapping W's and the Roman numeral XII are among the
patterns flown by the mystery aircraft. Last June, Hanford watched
four aircraft spraying in circles to form a perfect bulls-eye. Through
his Swaroski binoculars, Hanford could see what "looked like a 737"
painted all-white on top with an "orangish-red" underbody and red
engine cowlings. Another 727-like aircraft was painted "all-white with
a black stripe up the middle of fuselage." None of the planes carried
identifying markings.

Pat Edgar has been watching the jets spraying over eastern Oklahoma
since a sunny day in October, 1977 when as many as 30 contrails
gradually occluded the sky. "They look like they're playing tic-tac-toe
up there," he says. "You know darn well it's not passenger planes."

Edgar says he has watched "cobwebbing stuff coming down" from
the zigzagging jets flying "all day long, line after line, back-and-forth,
like furrows in a farm field."

Edgar adds that "There is a lot of Lupus in the area now. A lot of
women have come down with it."

Edgar's father-in-law, a former judge, and three or four other close
friends were hit hard in their immune systems. Symptoms include
swollen hands and legs, night fever and shortness of breath.

Retired Oklahoma state judge Bill Ed Rogers now runs out of breath
after walking 20 feet to the bathroom. Climbing stairs, he says, "is
directly out of the question."

Rogers, does not attribute his strange malady to the mystery jets. But
neither he nor his doctors can explain his breathing difficulty, which
began shortly after spraying began in November, 1997, and is getting
worse. The 57 year old former judge says he thought he was
experiencing congenital heart failure when he was admitted into the
Mayo clinic last January. But after being diagnosed with severe
inflamation in his right lung, a team of top surgeons were unable to
pump an unidentified "jello-like" fluid from his lung.

Edgar, Wallace, Hanford and other eye-witnesses are uneasy over the
ongoing aerial "experiments and the secrecy surrounding them.
"They're gettin' ready, practicing," Edgar believes, for some kind of
mass population cull.

Before Edgar sold his restaurant, customers came in complaining of
airplanes "flyin' around all night" over a remote area of Oklahoma. In
the morning, they could see "stuff comin' out of their wings." Edgar
says he knows four-dozen witnesses who have "come down violently
ill, coughin' up blood for two weeks - or [with] real bad nosebleeds."
As far as he's concerned, "it had to be something in that doggone
plane that was spillin' out in the middle of the night."

Edgar joins witnesses across the U.S. who worry that whoever is
behind the mystery spraying just has to "come up with something a
little stronger later on. It's just a guess," he says. "But it sure seems
weird. They have a mission. They go back and forth all day. Hey man
I'm talkin' hundreds of contrails in a day! It's unbelievable."

Jordan: Israel's Refusal to Return Arab Lands Spells Disaster

AMMAN (Agencies, AROL) Jan. 10 -- Jordan said Saturday that
security and peace will not come to the Middle East until Israel
returnseast Jerusalem and the Golan Heights which it captured in the
1967 Arab-Israeli war. Reacting to an Israeli parliamentary move to
make it more difficult to give back the territories, Jordan's Royal
Commission for Jerusalem Affairs said the "dangerous" move "threatens
the peace process with failure."
"Peace demands the return of the Golan Heights to Syria, south
Lebanon to Lebanon, and the establishment of an independent
Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital," said Abdallah
Kanaan, secretary general of the commission, which is headed by Crown
Prince Hassan Ibn Talal.
"Anything else and the region will move inexorably toward a
series of disasters the size of which God alone knows," Kanaan said
ina statement received by AFP.
The Israeli parliament voted 55 to 35 with 18 abstentions Monday
to approve a bill requiring that any territorial concessions on the
Golan or east Jerusalem be approved by at least 61 members of
parliament, as well as in a national referendum. The bill must pass
two more readings before it becomes law.

The Temple and the Number Eight

We've been focusing on the various temples mentioned in the Bible.
Something that caught my attention was the number eight and its
relationship with the temple or some aspect of worship. There are
numerous examples with varying significance of the number eight found
in the Bible, but I wanted to just focus on those that relate to the
tabernacle or temple. There may be other examples of the number eight
that you may wish to share with us. Please feel free to do so.

----------

From "Number in Scripture" by E.W. Bullinger:

In Hebrew the number eight is ...(Sh'moneh), from the
root...(Shah'meyn), "to make fat," "cover with fat," "to
super-abound." As a participle it means "one who abounds in strength,"
etc. As a noun it is "superabundant fertility," "oil," etc. So that as
a numeral it is the superabundant number. As seven was so called
because the seventh day was the day of completion and rest, so eight,
as the eighth day, was over and above this perfect completion...

1. The Feast of Tabernacles is the only feast which is kept eight
days.

2. The Steps in Ezekiel's Temple - seven led into the outer court, and
eight led from the outer to the inner. The seven led from labour to
rest, the eight from rest to worship.

[Ezek 40:31 - "And the arches thereof were toward the utter court; and
palm trees were upon the posts thereof: and the going up to it had
eight steps."]

3. In Solomon's Temple - there were eight classes of furniture, while
in the Tabernacle there were seven.

[The Brasen Sea was added in the Temple. The number eight also has the
biblical meaning of "resurrection and regeneration, and the beginning
of a new era or order." So we see that a new or fresh start is
indicated between the temple and the tabernacle. Another example of
this "new order of things" is seen in the eight people saved during
the flood who began a new life on a regenerated land.]

Greg Killian does an interesting study on the number eight which can
be found at http://members.aol.com/gkilli1/home/eight.html. When you
have time you should try to read his article. I'll outline a few of
his points that relate to our temple study:

4. The Mishkan, the Tabernacle in the wilderness, was inaugurated on
the eighth day. (Leviticus 8:33-9:24) - "The eighth day began the
inauguration of the Mishkan. It was on this day that the Divine
Presence finally descended and 'inhabited' the Mishkan. For, the
number eight always alludes to a departure from the 'natural' world,
and entry into the supernatural world."

5. The High Priest had eight holy garments, while an ordinary priest
had four. "The High Priest changes garments eight times on Yom Kippur
in his attempt to transcend the physical."

6. There were eight varieties of spices - four for the oil of
ointment, and four for the incense.

7. Eight poles were needed for carrying the vessel in the Sanctuary.

8. There were eight musical instruments that accompanied the psalms of
the Levites during the service, i.e., seven instruments and the choir
itself, for a total of eight.

9. Animals could be offered as sacrifices only after they were at
least eight days old.

(Lev 22:27 KJV) When a bullock, or a sheep, or a goat, is brought
forth, then it shall be seven days under the dam; and from the eighth
day and thenceforth it shall be accepted for an offering made by fire
unto the LORD.

10. "The harp of Messianic days has eight strings, while the harp of
the world to come has ten strings." This one needs further
explanation, so I quote from Greg's site:

Talmud - Mas. Arachin 13b

Midrash Rabbah - Numbers XV:11 TAKE THE LEVITES (VIII, 6).
Halachah: How many cords should there have been in the harp upon which
the Levites played? R. Judah said: There were seven cords in the harp,
as may be inferred from the text, Fulness of (soba') joy in Thy
presence, sweet melodies in Thy right hand (Ps. XVI, 11): do not read
'soba' (fullness of) but 'sheba' (seven joys). Similarly, David says,
Seven in the day do I praise Thee, because of Thy righteous ordinances
(ib. CXIX, 164). In the days of the Messiah it will be made of eight
cords; for so in fact says David in the melody, For the Leader; with
string-music; on the Sheminith--eight- stringed (ib. VI, 1). In the
time to come it will be made of ten; for it says, O God, I will sing a
new song unto Thee, upon a psaltery of ten strings (ib. CXLIV, 9). Who
ordained the instruments for them? Samuel and David; as it says, Whom
David and Samuel the seer did ordain in their set office (I Chron. IX,
22). It was they who established the divisions for the singing.

11. Chanukah is eight days long.

"The oil, which should have lasted one day in the Chanukah miracle,
lasted for eight. HaShem's message was that the military victory
should not be explained in material, political or in other physical
terms. The number eight points to the intervention of the
supernatural. It reminds us that the invisible hand of HaShem is at
work in all human enterprises, no matter how mundane.

"Our Sages explain that there is particular significance in the fact
that the Chanukah menorah has eight lamps, and that we celebrate the
Festival for eight days. In the Holy Temple, the golden Menorah
kindled each day in the Sanctuary had only seven lamps. The number
seven represents the natural cycle of time: the seven days of the
week, corresponding to the six days of Creation and the seventh, the
Sabbath Day. Throughout history, since HaShem created the world, time
has been measured according to this seven-day cycle. The number eight,
however, represents a level that is higher than nature, and above
time. This is the level of the miraculous, which is not bound by the
laws of nature..."

Israel Welcomes Mikhail Gorbachev
 By RON KAMPEAS
 Associated Press Writer

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) _ It was an unfamiliar sight for
Mikhail Gorbachev on Sunday: crowds of Russians declaring their
adoration for the former Soviet leader.
He couldn't crack a single percentage point in Russian
elections in 1996, but in Tel Aviv on Sunday, all he got were cheers.
``Mrs. Gorbachev, you're not the only one who loves your
husband,'' former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres said,
introducing the former Soviet leader to a standing ovation.
Gorbachev is in Israel to attend the second annual meeting
of the international board of governors for the Peres Center for
Peace, of which he is a board member.
He was followed by a crowd of Russian-speaking admirers as
he toured the site of the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister
Yitzhak Rabin, and addressed a hall full of recent immigrants.
Gorbachev opened the Soviet Union's doors in the late
1980s with his policies of glasnost and perestroika _ openness and
restructuring _ also sparking a flood of Jewish immigration to
 Israel.
The arrival and mostly successful absorption of 850,000
Jews helped precipitate a mid-1990s economic boom in Israel. The
immigrants have proven their political power, electing eight
legislators from an immigrant party to the Knesset.
Gorbachev expressed his admiration for Israel's recent
economic strides _ while bemoaning a Russia where he said a majority
of the population lives in poverty.
Fielding friendly questions, Gorbachev acknowledged some
 responsibility for Russia's current woes.
``I would have the same strategy, but the details would be
different,'' Gorbachev said, when asked what he would do if he
could go back 10 years in time.
He blamed most of Russia's problems on President Boris
Yeltsin and Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov _ and urged Russians to
oust them in coming elections.
``Their politics have come to a dead end,'' he said. ``We
need to think where to go from here.''
Gorbachev strongly condemned the recent anti-Semitic
statements made by some in the Communist Party that he once led.
Calling anti-Semitism a ``threat to democracy,'' he said
he was concerned that there was no public outcry.
He drew murmurs of disapproval only once _ when he
condemned last month's U.S.-British attack on Iraq as
``unacceptable.''
Despite the group of admirers, Gorbachev's lessening
relevance to Russia was noted even by the former Soviets who came
from around Israel to see him.
``I love him and cherish him,'' said Roman Feldman, a
retired electrical engineer who arrived from Kiev in 1991, ``But he's
a has-been.''
The Peres Center for Peace gathering also drew more than
150 past and present world leaders, financiers and Nobel laureates.
The three-day meeting was aimed at sponsoring Arab-Israeli economic
projects and demonstrate participants' support for Mideast peace.
Besides Gorbachev, the event drew South Africa's Bishop
Desmond Tutu, former South African President F.W. de Klerk, and
former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
Monday, the group will travel to Ramallah, West Bank to
meet with Palestinian leaders. The meeting concludes Tuesday.

MOSCOW (AP) - The breakaway republic of Chechnya intends to adopt an
Islamic constitution, a Russian news agency reported Sunday. Appearing
on Chechen state TV Saturday, Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov mapped
out his plans to adopt a new constitution based on the Koran, the
Muslim holy book. Already, Chechnya considers itself to be an Islamic
republic and its highest court relies on Islamic law. The changes
would take place within three years, he said, and then the government
would hold presidential and parliamentary elections. Maskhadov is
being criticized in Chechnya by opposition warlords who are seeking to
remove him from office, in part for establishing what they consider
overly friendly relations with Russia. See

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Mormon church has banned e-mail and faxes as
ways for its missionaries to communicate with families and friends
back home. Don LeFevre, church spokesman, said there are exceptions to
the new policy announced in December, such as missionaries living in
areas where postal service is poor. Communication between missionaries
and their families has always been tightly controlled by the church in
an effort to keep missionaries. Missionaries are allowed to phone home
only twice a year, on Christmas and Mother's Day, and are not supposed
to write more than once a week. LeFevre said given the convenience of
e-mail, "some missionaries may be communicating more than once a week
and that would detract from missionary work." See

Russian envoy is appointed to key UN post
US diplomatic foe joins inner circle

By Colum Lynch, Globe Correspondent, 01/09/99

UNITED NATIONS - In a move that is likely to increase Russia's
influence in the United Nations, Secretary General Kofi Annan has
appointed a senior Russian official - and former US Cold War adversary
- to serve as his diplomatic trouble-shooter.

The appointment of Yuli M. Vorontsov, Russia's outgoing ambassador to
Washington, has generated anxiety among US officials, already upset
with Annan over leaks about US espionage in Iraq under UN auspices.

Vorontsov has been an adept diplomatic foe of Washington in
Afghanistan and during the end of the Cold War, emerging later as an
adversary over conflicting US-Russian policies in Iraq.

US officials reacted suspiciously to the appointment.

''This is the consummate survivor in the old Soviet system,'' a US
official who has tracked Vorontsov said yesterday. ''Whether that is
the sort of person we want in the United Nations Secretariat is a fair
question.''

UN officials insisted yesterday that there is nothing unusual in the
appointment.

Former US secretaries of state Cyrus Vance and James Baker have
served as diplomatic envoys for the United Nations from the Balkans
to Western Sahara. Many of Annan's current diplomatic
trouble-shooters, including the current UN-East Timor mediator,
Jamsheed Marker of Pakistan, have previously served as ambassador at
UN headquarters in New York.

Vorontsov, Russia's ambassador to the United Nations from 1990 to
1994, has accepted the post for a token annual salary of $1. He will
hold the rank of undersecretary general, carrying out diplomatic
missions for the UN chief.

''He's an old pro and he was at the UN for many years,'' the Amerian
official said. ''So he is certainly qualified, but he's an old
Soviet.''

Russian specialists say Vorontsov could actually be a conciliatory
influence for relations between the United States and the United
Nations, which have degenerated to their worst state since Annan came
to office two years ago.

Vorontsov, a close ally of Russia's former spymaster, current Prime
Minister Yevgeny Primakov, has headed key Russian embassies in France,
India, and Afghanistan.

The arrival of Vorontsov will place within Annan's inner circle
another advocate of softening the UN's policy on Iraq.

Annan's closest advisers have already pressed the UN secretary
general to ease economic sanctions on Iraq and weaken the
international weapons inspection team responsible for ridding Iraq of
its nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons.

Some observers say Vorontsov may prove useful to the United States,
which is seeking to smooth relations with Moscow over Washington's
decision to launch airstrikes against Iraq without Russian backing.

Jeffrey Laurenti, an analyst at the United Nations Association, said
that while Vorontsov often has clashed with the Americans in the past,
he has also worked with the UN during the most cooperative period of
US-Russian relations.

He said that it may be advantageous to have Russia play a more active
role in conflict resolution, as long as it doesn't involve a part of
the world where Washington and Moscow are at loggerheads.

''Giving him an assignment in Iraq or Yugoslavia would be damaging to
Washington's trust,'' he said. ''But it is not an inherently bad thing
to keep the Russians engaged in a constructive way.''

Stephen Cohen, a Russian studies professor at New York University,
said Vorontsov is among the more pro-Western diplomats in the Russian
Foreign Ministry.

''The Russian Foreign Ministry is divided between those who are
suspicious of the West,'' Cohen said. ''And there are those Russians
who feel Russia's destiny is in the West. Vorontsov would be among
those people.''

PERES CALLS FOR PALESTINIAN STATE

Shimon Peres received a rousing wave of applause today from
the Palestinian Legislative Council when he announced that he is in
favor of a Palestinian state. Peres was accompanied to today's
session in Ramallah by international guests of the Peres Center for
Peace, such as Michael Gorbachev, Henry Kissinger, and others.
Gorbachev also addressed the 88-member Council - of which only 40
showed up today - as did Yasser Arafat. Benny Begin, reacting to
Peres' remarks today, said that they simply show what were his true
intentions when he initiated the Oslo process over five years ago.

WESTERN WALL SECURITY

Security around the Western Wall Plaza in Jerusalem has
been intensified. Numerous warnings have been received over the past
two weeks of terrorist intentions to carry out an attack there.
Dozens of policemen and soldiers have been stationed at the site and

Jerusalem, January 11, 1999

Update: Official Egyptian Media Continue to Deny Holocaust,
Preach Anti-Semitism
(communicated by the Israel Government Press Office)

Four months ago, on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the September
17, 1978 Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, the Israel
Government Press Office (GPO) released a special report documenting
anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial in the official Egyptian press.
Egyptian officials responded by denying that the official Egyptian
media was anti-Semitic.

Following are several examples of anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial
which have appeared in the official Egyptian press in recent months:

* Egyptian daily, Al-Ahram, December 8, 1998 (article by Nabil Amar)
"Has there been any change at all in the personality of the fanatic
Jew, as it has come to be known and described in the literature and
heritage of most of the nations of the world? That is to say, has
there been any development of his character traits after his state has
been established and he has obtained international influence? For
example, is there any difference between Netanyahu's traits, when he
is negotiating with the Palestinians, Lebanese and the Syrians, and
those of the money-lender from the play 'The Merchant of Venice'?"

* Egyptian daily Al-Ahram, November 29, 1998
(article by Ragev al-Bana on Israel's treatment of the Palestinians
 and human rights)
"Who would have believed that there would be a country in the world
which even now follows the Nazi example in its treatment of
prisoners?"

* Egyptian daily Al-Ahram, November 14, 1998
"The Jews have been behind all of the wars and their goal was
corruption and destruction. This is their means of getting rich quick
after wars."

* Egyptian weekly October, October 11, 1998 issue (article by Muhammad
al-Takhlawi) "Research done regarding the Torah proves that there is
no one with whom the Jews have not quarreled, including God.... the
Torah makes clear that quarreling and strife are among the foundations
of the "Israeli personality", for immediately upon birth, the Jew
imbibes conflict with his mother's milk and therefore one can not find
a Jew who is not involved in some dispute... [the Jew is] a man of
quarrel and conflict, who sows enmity with his hidden fingers
throughout the entire world."

* Egyptian weekly October, October 4, 1998 issue (article by Mustafa
Mahmoud) "Any one who studies the Jewish heritage can not help but
feel that all conspiracies against religions and generally all
destructive upheavals and the undermining of values and basic
principles - all are the result of this heritage. Jewish guidance
directs every axe of destruction... Satan worship is part of Judaism
and especially its concealed aspects, such as the Kabbalah, as is the
goal of destroying the monotheistic religions."

* Egyptian daily Al-Akhbar, September 25, 1998
(article by Wahya Abu Thawkra entitled, "The Holocaust, Netanyahu and
Me") "... the Jews invented the myth of mass extermination and the
fabrication that 6 million Jews were put to death in Nazi ovens. This
was done with the aim of motivating the Jews to emigrate to Israel and
to blackmail the Germans for money as well as to achieve world support
for the Jews. Similarly, Zionism based itself on this myth to
establish the State of Israel... I continue to believe that the
Holocaust is an Israeli myth which was invented to blackmail the
world."

* Egyptian daily Al-Ahram, September 21, 1998 (article by Anis
Mansour) "...racism, chauvinism and the principle of ethnic purity are
all elements of Zionism, regardless of the revocation of the UN
resolution on this subject."

Same-sex parenting a few years away?

LONDON -- Scientists are developing a genetic technique that could
remove the biological barriers preventing same-sex parenting in
mammals, the Sunday Times reported here.

The newspaper said in its Internet edition that an American team
believed it might be just two years away from creating a healthy
mouse with all its chromosomes from the female line -- normally half
come from the father, half from the mother.

The technology, which involves nuclear transfer methods and is
fundamentally different from cloning, would remove the biological
barriers that prevent same-sex parenting in mammals.

It will surely revive concerns that science is creating "unnatural"
ways in which people can conceive and bring up children.

                          Sermon on Temple Mount
Al Aqsa Mosque, January 8, 1998

In the Name of ALLAH the merciful and the compassionate
All praise is due to Allah and all peace be upon the Imam of
messengers Mohammed ben Abdullah (The intercessor on day of Judgement)
his family and companions and the ones who followed his path till the
day of judgement.
I witness that there is no god but Allah , and that Muhammad is his
slave and his messenger.
     O brothers in Islam,
I welcome you again in this Al-Aqsa Masjid in the third Friday of
this blessed Ramadhan And I hope that this Friday will come
(Insha'Allah) next year while the circumstances had changed; Al-Aqsa
was liberated, and Israel was removed by the Islamic Khilafah State.
Today I will talk to you about Iraq; what do you know about Iraq!
what the future is hiding for Iraq? What will happen to Iraq after the
end of Ramadhan ? and Is it possible that a surprise might occur
against the will of Clinton the adulterer and against the will of the
Imperialist infidels and their agents in the Muslim land?
     O Muslims,
I heard that there was recently an article in the Washington Post
newspaper about UNSCOM (the UN organization responsible for the
inspection of strategic weapons in Iraq). The article says that UNSCOM
was involved in spying on Iraqi officials, Iraqi Army and the Iraqi
leadership. According to the Newspaper UNSCOM then transferred the
info that they gathered to the CIA and the CIA had used that info in
the recent bombarding of Iraq. Koofy Anan had denied these
accusations, but many American newspapers after Washington Post's
article had started to state clearly that Richard Betler and other
UNSCOM officials were involved in spying activities inside Iraq.
Why this honesty is coming now from the American newspapers?
Where was this honesty just before the bombarding of Iraq, during
the bombarding of Iraq, and after the bombarding of Iraq? Why this
American media did no say it clear then that you UNSCOM are spies, so
don't bombard Iraq, and you should expel Betler?
Nizar Hamdoon, the Iraqi representative in the UN spread the news
about these articles. He had even held a press conference to comment
on these news, he had said that "based on such facts, we refuse the
return of UNSCOM to Iraq, and we refuse the no fly zone over the
northern and the southern parts of Iraq.". This means that the U.S.
and through her own media is trying to catch Iraq in a trap. Listen to
what I want to say:
The U.S. in not honest: she is not honest as a state, and she is
not honest in her media either. The U.S. is a bitter enemy with all
her resources. So she is now preparing for a new trap against Iraq.
When Iraq sees the American media trying to be fair he will act in a
way to give a reason for the U.S. to hit him again after the end of
Ramadhan. You can see that the situation is escalating now: like the
situation between the U.S airforce and the Iraqi army. But what can
Iraq , alone, do against the arrogant U.S. without the help of his
neighboring states.
Two days ago, Saddam had appealed to the young generation in the
ruling families to topple their corrupted rulers because they had
conspired with the west against their brothers and sisters.
But, Saddam, do you think that they will respond to you?
Do you think, Saddam, that these rulers will be afraid from your
appeal especially with your situation now?
Saddam, you should fear Allah. You should know that if you change
your path and if you state clearly that you had returned to the path
of Allah, you have the capability to do that and to tear out the
infidel nationalist secular Ba'ath ruling party,
If you indeed, returned to Allah and applied the true Islam then
you will find Allah with you and not "the young generation of the
ruling families". Look how Mubarak because the U.S. ordered him not to
support the invitation for the Arab foreign ministers conference, he
had refused to support it. Mubarak had refused every invitation for an
Arab conference once the U.S. refused it.
O, Saddam: now your head is wanted ; the Americans and the British
want to replace you with a new agent for them. You should defend
yourself in order to survive. And the way to survive is not through
nationalism, or Ba'athism. Neither it is through dealing with Russians
or the British. The only way to survive is to deal with Allah
directly, to return to the path of Allah. You may declare Islam or
step aside and invite his people to take over . You don't have plenty
of time. The U.S. is gathering her forces, as we think, to hit Iraq a
strong hit after the end of the month of Ramadhan. This, if Clinton
stayed in rule but the U.S. has it in her strategic plans to implement
such action, if not now then one day. The Russians can't stand in
front of the tyrant U.S. , the Arab rulers are agents, they can do
nothing but to pay the bills. So who will be able to drive the U.S.
and the Britain out ? Who will be able to remove Israel? Allah, and
the soldiers of Allah.
     O Muslims,
Allah had ordered us to work . We know that the great battle is
coming. Iraq may or may not be the spark, but the sincere Muslims will
one day reach the rule in Baghdad, Damascus, Amman, Cairo, Istanbul,
and Pakistan.
Islam will rule the world, one day, against the will of the
infidels, and the hypocrites. We are trying to avoid bloodshed, but
these wolves feel appetite for the blood of Muslims.
The Islamic Khilafah State is coming not through these corrupted
rulers but through you: you the sincere Muslims and through your
sincere work towards this goal.
There will be many battles with the infidels but we will be
victorious by the will of Allah.
All this will happen before the end of the world, and before the
coming of Jesus (may peace be upon him).
We should be sincere , " there is no help except from Allah" .
There will be severe punishment for the Muslims, who are capable, who
do no support and defend their oppressed brothers and sisters in
Muslim lands. Don't our sisters in Iraq need help? While many of the
rulers of the gulf and some of their people sleep drunk, in this holy
month of Ramadhan, their brothers and sisters near them in Iraq have
their sons and daughters killed, their homes destroyed along with
their hospitals and their cities.
All this is a sign that the revenge of Allah is near; that the
victory of Allah is near.
The American ruler is attacking the true Islam, he describes it as
something from the past, it can not be applied again.
Allah cursed him after he hit Iraq. It was mentioned that,
recently, his wife had attacked him with her shoes kicking him on his
face until he called the guards asking them to remove this "dog" away
from him. He ran to his guards after she had hit him on his burned
face, this face who burned the faces of the people of Iraq in this
holy month. O Clinton, if your wife is a dog what do you consider
yourself? You are the head of the dogs and wolves.
Allah will exact from them the penalty by his sincere believers.
Allah says in the Holy Quran " We will, without doubt, help Our
Messengers and those who believe, (both) in this world's life and on
the Day when the Witnesses will stand forth." Ghafer (40-51).
May Allah help us to establish the Islamic Khilafah State.
May Allah help us against the U.S. and all the enemies of Allah.
May Allah revenge from whoever attack Muslims. Ameen...

*** Russia panel OKs more defense funds

MOSCOW (AP) - A key parliamentary committee voted Monday to increase
Russian defense spending this year - despite the government's
inability to fund the military even at its existing level. The budget
subcommittee of the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, said it
wanted to increase defense spending by $65.2 million over the amount
proposed by Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov. It said the government
could raise the money by cutting its own administrative spending. The
Duma, dominated by Communists and nationalists, has long advocated
higher defense spending than the government. See

Boost To Mideast Peace Plan Sought
 By NICOLAS B. TATRO
 Associated Press Writer

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) _ Archbishop Desmond Tutu predicted
the ``nightmare will end'' for Arabs and Israelis, Henry Kissinger
said a Palestinian state would emerge, and Mikhail Gorbachev said
force was not the answer.
With speeches interspersed with songs from Arab and Israeli
singers, more than 350 current and former diplomats and politicians
from around the world gathered to give a boost to the Mideast peace
process in its hour of need.
The gala event in Tel Aviv's glittering new Center for
Performing Arts was organized by former Israeli Prime Minister
Shimon Peres included more than 150 Arabs from Egypt, Jordan, the
 Palestinian areas and Morocco.
The large Arab turnout in the audience of more than 1,000
invited guests was in marked contrast to the eroding relations
between Israel and the Arab world since Netanyahu's hard-line
 government came to power.
The show of peacemaking spirit came as Israel was
beginning a four-month election campaign and at a time when the peace
process is once again mired in mutual accusations and inaction.
There were signs of impatience, too, as Egyptian Foreign
Minister Amr Moussa of Egypt asked the Israeli government, ``What is
 taking you so long?''
Moussa set the tone from the Arab side with a strongly
worded attack on the current government of Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu for what he called a ``policy of procrastination''
and delay in implementing the Wye peace accord reached Oct. 23.
``Why adopt policies that can only result in a loss of
confidence? Why insist on undermining and discrediting partners? Why
act as if peace is a threat to Israel?'' he asked.
Ahmed Qureia, known as Abu Ala, the speaker of the
Palestinian Legislative Council, said it was important for Israel to
recognize Palestinian desire for statehood before May 4 when the
interim peace agreement expires.
Earlier in the day, the world leaders visited the
Palestinian legislature in the West Bank town of Ramallah, where
Peresbecame the first Israeli to address the lawmaking body. They
also met with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Calif., joined a long list of recent
visitors in calling on Arafat to postpone a declaration of statehood
to avoid creating tensions in advance of Israel's May 17 elections.
Israeli President Ezer Weizman, whose role as ceremonial
head of state usually keeps him above the political fray, called on
his own government to implement the Wye accords despite the election
 campaign.
Netanyahu's hard-line Cabinet suspended further West Bank
withdrawals, saying the Palestinians were violating the spirit of
peacemaking by threatening to declare a state instead of negotiating
 a solution.
Kissinger, the former U.S. secretary of state, noted that
previous Israeli prime ministers had risen to the occasion and had
done what was necessary for peace and predicted the process would
 succeed.
Kissinger said at the end of the process there will be a
Palestinian state. But the Palestinians should not use the threat of
 declaring independence ``as a weapon.''
Although he championed the step-by-step approach,
Kissinger said that it was time to resolve the big remaining issues
such as the future of Jerusalem, refugees and borders.
``I do not believe that any further partial steps are
possible and that we are close enough to the end to bring this to a
conclusion on terms that give Israel a sense of security and the
Arabs a sense of dignity,'' he said.
In a speech, Tutu compared the suffering of the
Arab-Israeli conflict to that brought to South Africa by apartheid.
``We had a nightmare. It was called apartheid. The nightmare is
ended. Your nightmare will end.''
Gorbachev, speaking through a translator, said more
reliance should be placed on the United Nations and no party should
act on his own.
Peacemaking, he said, ``is an almost impossible task
without the involvement of the entire international community.''
Other world figures included former Costa Rican President
Oscar Sanchez Arias, former Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Khalil
and former South African President F.W. de Klerk. Polish President
Aleksander Kwasniewski attended the Ramallah event, but not the one
 in Tel Aviv.
U.S. Mideast envoy Dennis Ross read a greeting from
President Clinton, but avoided commenting on the status of
negotiations.
The only member of Netanyahu's Cabinet who
was present was Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai, who is being
wooed by both Netanyahu's Likud and the opposition Labor Party as
well as centrist factions.

*** Israel to cut, modernize army

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israel announced Tuesday it will begin to reduce and
modernize the armed forces in the wake of new strategic threats in the
region. The armed forces chief-of-staff, Lt. Gen. Shaul Mofaz, said
the cuts entailed some risks because of ongoing threats from hostile
neighbors such as Syria, Iraq and Iran. But he said the risks were
reasonable and unavoidable. The plan, which will cut the number of
reserve units, will likely be welcomed by Israel's civilian community.
Israeli men are expected to serve 30 days a year in the reserves until
the age of 45. Israeli armed forces planning has traditionally been
based on the assumption that regular forces could defend the narrow
borders until reserves could be called up. See

Report: Balfour Author Was a Jew

LONDON (AP) _ The British author of a key international
document that paved the way for the foundation of Israel covered up
his own Jewish ancestry, a historian says.
Leopold Amery, a British lawmaker who drafted the Balfour
Declaration, changed his middle name from Moritz to Maurice in an
apparent effort to hide the fact his mother was a Jew, Professor
William Rubinstein of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, writes in
the current issue of History Today magazine.
As assistant secretary to the war cabinet in 1917, Amery
drafted a letter for Lord Balfour, the foreign secretary, expressing
Britain's support for ``the establishment in Palestine of a
national home for the Jewish people.''
The Balfour Declaration was endorsed by the Allied powers
and included in the British mandate over Palestine, which was
approvedby the League of Nations in 1922.
In his autobiography ``My Political Life,'' which was
published shortly before his death in 1955, Amery said only that his
mother had fled Hungary after 1848. He said his father came from an
old English family.
Rubinstein said Amery's mother was Elizabeth Johanna
Saphir and was of purely Jewish descent.
``It is an extraordinary secret, possibly the most
remarkable example of concealment of identity in 20th-century British
 political history,'' Rubinstein said.
One of Amery's sons, John, was a fascist who was hanged for
treason in London during World War II. Another son, Julian, was a
longtime Conservative member of Parliament who died in 1996.
Rubinstein speculated that Amery may have covered up his
Jewish ancestry to avoid harassment at school, or to avoid being
pressured by Jewish interests as a member of Parliament.
``Most men _ especially those in public life _ who are
hiding their Jewish ancestry would take pains to distance themselves
as far as possible from Jewish issues,'' Rubinstein said. ``Many
mighthave become anti-Semites. But most remarkably, Amery behaved in
precisely the opposite manner.''

New Euro called 'Arrow' in Hebrew

Weekend News Today
By Andra Brack
Source: IsraelWire

Wed Jan 13 , 1999 -- After much debate, Israel's chief lexicographers
emerged with a ruling Tuesday: Europe's new currency, as it is
officially spelled in Hebrew, is pronounced 'arrow.' "Some wanted the
more English pronunciation, but we decided to use the Semitic
version," explained Malka Zemeli, spokeswoman for the Academy of the
Hebrew Language. The academy is responsible for developing Hebrew,
Israel's official language. Dead for over a thousand years, the
language was revived at the turn of the century by a Jewish
lexicographer who settled in Palestine in the 1880s and coined
hundreds of Hebrew words for modern life, often going back to the
biblical roots. In keeping with its efforts to create new words in
Hebrew rather than borrow foreign imports, the academy unanimously
agreed Monday that the pronunciation of the currency should match the
pronunciation of "Europe" in Hebrew: "Aeropa." The academy called on
Israeli journalists to start using the new pronunciation and spelling.

Israel Negotiates Russian Weapons Purchase, Cooperation
Tel Aviv Novosti Nedeli, 15 Jan 99 pp 1, 3
                           [Report by Qobi Baz]
Against the backdrop of the cooling relations between Jerusalem
and Moscow, the Israeli Defense Ministry and Israel Police are
conducting intensive discussions on the purchase of large quantities
of Russian weapons.
Acting on the basis of cost-effectiveness -- the Russian weapons
are unequaled in this respect -- the Israeli Defense Ministry, the
Israeli defense industry, and Israel Police have recently placed
several weapons orders with the Russians. In the past two months,
Israeli delegations have visited Russia, and Russian delegations have
been to Israel. These visits were naturally kept out of the sight of
the media. A representative of the Russian Government-owned company
Rosvooruzheniye has twice visited Israel during these two months.
Moreover, a delegation of the Russian aircraft company Kamov was here
at the beginning of January at the invitation of Israel Aircraft
Industries [IAI]. During the latter visit, the sides discussed the
prospects of jointly building a combat helicopter for the air forces
of Turkey and several Latin American countries on the basis of the
famous Ka-50 Chernaya Akula. A delegation from a major Israeli defense
plant visited several Russian defense plants to discuss cooperation in
the development of a weapons system for ground forces. In addition, a
large delegation from a leading Russian aircraft plant is due to visit
Israel and meet with IAI representatives in the near future. The
purpose of the visit: talks on the possibility of cooperating in the
development of a long-range radar aircraft (similar to the US AWACS
and Hawkeye). The important thing is that after Israeli-made
electronic equipment is mounted on the Russian-made aircraft they will
be sold to third countries.
A delegation from a leading Israeli military plant will travel to
Russia at the end of January. The delegates will hold business talks
with firms such as Kamov, Mil, Zenit, and MAPO MiG. Another Russian
Government-owned firm which has been interested in cooperating with
Israel is Promexport, one of Rosvooruzheniye's competitors. A number
of Israeli firms have offered Russia their services in the development
of technologies for the utilization of toxic substances, which Russia
sorely needs.
In addition, Israel Police would like to purchase Russian-made
state-of-the-art weapons systems, such as the Makarov PB handgun with
an internal and external muffler [glushitel], a noiseless PPS
submachine gun, machine guns Kedr and Kiparis, 9-mm sniper rifle
Vintorez, and other unique systems. The police are ready to purchase
52 guns plus 55,000 cartridges even before a deal is signed. [passage

BLARNEY, Ireland (AP) - A 16-year-old Irish schoolgirl may have
made
e-mail even faster. Sarah Flannery is being hailed as a mathematical
genius for devising a new code for sending electronic mail - and is
being
flooded with job offers from computer firms, the Times of London said
Wednesday. The new code is 10 times faster than the current data
protection code, created by three students at the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology in 1977, the paper said. Flannery, who unveiled the code to
amazed judges at the Irish Young Scientists and Technology Exhibition last
weekend, said she is considering publishing her discovery rather than
patenting it because she does not want people to have to pay to use it.

*** 'Machine' crafted out of DNA

(AP) - Scientists have made a moving part out of a few strands of
DNA, a step toward building incredibly tiny "machines" that could
someday perform intricate jobs like building computer circuits and
clearing clogged blood vessels in the brain. The hinge-like part,
which bends on cue, is just four-ten-thousandths of the width of a
human hair. The new work is not the first time scientists have turned
chemical compounds into moving parts. But previous examples have been
hampered by their floppy nature. The DNA device, however, is particularly
rigid and executes motions 10 times bigger, lead researcher Nadrian C.

had designed it another way; namely, that it should come to the family
of Arphaxad, and Heber, of which family Abraham was. Him, therefore,
God strengtheneth against the army of Elam, and declares him heir by a
stupendous victory; which Sem himself likewise does, blessing him,
although he had overthrown in battle his sons the Elamites, born of
his first-born Elam. For that most holy man, and a very great and
noble prophet withal, acknowledged the counsel of God; whom he is so
far from opposing for the slaughter of his sons, that, on the
contrary, he blesseth the conqueror, and yields him the choicest
fruits of his land, bread and wine, not only for refreshment to him
and his soldiers, but also, perhaps, for a sign rather of resignation,
and investing him with the hereditary right of it, whom God, by so
signal a mark, had shown to be the heir. Upon very good reason,
therefore, Abraham is called Hebrew, to point as it were with the
finger, that God would derive the inheritance of that land from the
family of Elam to the family of Heber, from the first-born to him that
was born after; which was also done afterward with Reuben and Joseph.

II. It neither ought, nor indeed can be passed over without
observation, that the country of Pentapolis, and the countries
adjacent, were subjects and tributaries to Chedorlaomer king of Elam.
What! was there any part of the land of Canaan subject to the king of
the Persians, when so many kings and countries lay between it and
Persia? No idle scruple and difficulty, I assure you; nor, as far as I
can see, any otherwise to be resolved, than that Elam, the first-born
of Sem, or Melchisedek, by his birthright, was heir of that land,
which his father Sem possessed by divine right and patent; and the
sons of Elam also held after him, and his grandsons, unto
Chedorlaomer. For when it is said that those cities and countries had
served Chedorlaomer twelve years, the times of his reign seem rather
to be reckoned than the years of the reign of the Elamites. Not that
those nations were subject to the sceptre of the Elamites twelve years
only, but that that year was only the twelfth of Chedorlaomer. But now
God translates the inheritance to the family of Heber, called Hebrew
before, but now more particularly, and more honourably, since, of all
the families of Sem, that was now most eminent. Heber denotes Hebrews,
as Assur denotes Assyrians, in those words of Balaam, Numbers 24:24,
"and shall afflict Assur, and shall afflict Heber."

It is a dream of somebody among the Rabbins, "That, when the whole
land was divided among the seventy nations at the confusion of
tongues, the land of Canaan came to none: therefore the Canaanites
betook themselves thither; and being found not only empty, but
conferred by lot upon none, they usurped it for their own."

But what then shall we say of Melchizedek, whom now all acknowledge
for Shem? Which is more probable, that he intruded among the
Canaanites, now inhabiting the land, or that they intruded upon him?
Was not that land hereditary to him and his, rather than usurped by
wrong and intrusion? And did not he, by the direction of the Spirit of
God, betake himself thither, rather than either that he, wandering
about uncertainly, lighted upon that land by chance, or, acted by a
spirit of ambition or usurpation, violently possessed himself of it?
For my part, I scarcely believe, either that the Canaanites went
thither before the confusion of tongues, or that Shem, at that time,
was not there: but that he had long and fully inhabited the land of
Canaan (as it was afterward called), before the entrance of the
Canaanites into it: and that by the privilege of a divine grant, which
had destined him and his posterity hither: and that afterward the
Canaanites crept in here; and were first subjects to the family of
Shem, whose first-born was Elam, but at length shook off the yoke.

When, therefore, all those original nations, from the confusion of
tongues, partook of their names immediately from the fathers of their
stock; as, the Assyrians from Assur, the Elamites from Elam, &c.; the
same we must hold of the Hebrew nation, namely, that it, from that
time, was called Hebrew from Heber: and that it was called the land of
the Hebrews, before it was called the land of the Canaanites. For I
can neither think that the stock of the Hebrews had no name for almost
three hundred years after the confusion of tongues, until the passing
of Abraham out of Chaldea found a name for it, which some would have;
nor methinks is it agreeable that Abraham was therefore called Hebrew,
because, travelling out of Chaldea into the land of Canaan, he passed
Euphrates; when, upon the same reason, both Canaan himself, and the
fathers of all the western nations almost, should be called Hebrews;
for they passed over Euphrates, traveling out of Chaldea. And when the
patriarch Joseph himself is called by his mistress a "Hebrew servant,"
Genesis 39:17, and so called by the servants of Pharaoh, chapter
41:12; and when he saith of himself, that he was stolen away "out of
the land of the Hebrews," Genesis 40:15,--it is scarcely probable that
that whole land was known to other countries under that name, only for
one family now dwelling there; and that family a stranger, a
traveller, and living in danger from the inhabitants: but rather that
it was known by that name from ancient ages, even before it was called
"The land of the Canaanites." Nor, if we should raise a contest
against that opinion, which asserts that the language of the
Canaanites and the Hebrews was one and the same, would that argument
any whit move us, that the towns and cities of the Canaanites bore
names which were also Hebrew; for those their Hebrew names they might
receive from Shem, Heber, and their children, before they were places
of the Canaanites.

Heber lived when the tongues were confounded, and the nations
scattered; and when none denied that the sons of Heber were Hebrews,
(yea, who would deny that that land was the land of Heber?) by what
reason should not they and that nation take their name from him, after
the same manner as other nations took theirs from their father, at the
confusion of languages?

Saturn-bound spacecraft develops problem

The plutonium-powered Cassini spacecraft went into a safe mode this
week when it detected a possible error in its orientation en route to
Saturn, officials at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said
Wednesday in Pasadena, Calif. The operations team was in contact
with the spacecraft, which sensed the possible problem on Monday
and triggered a program designed to halt all noncritical activity and
maintain a communications link with Earth, a JPL statement said.
Cassini, NASA's biggest and most complex interplanetary probe, is on
a $3.4 billion mission to explore the ringed planet. It was launched on
Oct. 15 from Cape Canaveral, Fla., over the objections of anti-nuclear
protesters who feared what might happen if the rocket exploded while
carrying Cassini and its 72 pounds of extremely poisonous plutonium.
