Museum seals ossuary linked to priest's plot in crucifixion

By Nicolas B. Tatro
Associated Press writer

JERUSALEM _ An ornate stone burial box believed to have
contained the bones of a high priest who plotted Jesus' arrest has
been sealed shut after eager Christian pilgrims tried to open it to
get a look. Officials at the Israel Museum revealed Monday that they
had taken the step to protect the ossuary, one of the few artifacts
linked to the story of Jesus' crucifixion.

It is a centerpiece of the museum's new exhibition on early
Christianity to mark the year 2000, when Christian tourists are
expected to pour into the Holy Land for millennium celebrations.

Decorated with floral designs chiseled in the smooth white limestone,
the ossuary held the remains of Joseph Caiaphas, the Judean high
priest appointed by the Romans.

According to Christian tradition, Caiaphas, acting on a tip from
Jesus' disciple Judas, sent his Temple guards to arrest Jesus, who had
predicted the destruction of the Temple and the overthrow of the
priestly hierarchy.

The burial box was unearthed about five years ago when a tractor fell
into a cave while building a promenade overlooking Jerusalem's walled
Old City. It was near the biblical site know as the "Hill of Evil
Council," where priests met in Caiaphas' house to plot the arrest of
Jesus and recommend that he be killed after being found guilty of
blasphemy.

The bones were reburied in a valley near Jerusalem and, out of respect
for Orthodox Jews who oppose the practice, have never been on display
in the museum, said David Mevorah, curator of the exhibit. Groups of
Christian pilgrims have gathered in front of the ossuary and prayed,
many overcome with emotion at being in contact with artifacts linked
so directly to Jesus. Some have tried to open the box.

"The lid was broken several times," said Mevorah. "We have now had to
fortify it with epoxy resin because people coming here, apart from
praying sometimes, try to open it and see if the bones or the relics
are still here.

"It is now closed and cannot be opened," he told reporters.

The ossuary, about the size of an airline carry-on bag, is displayed
next to the only artifact confirming the existence of Pontius Pilate,
the Roman procurator, or governor, of Judea who passed the death
sentence against Jesus. It is a dedication tablet for a building found
in the seaside ruins of Caesaria in northern Israel. Going on display
later this year will be a replica of the only artifact confirming the
Roman practice of crucifixion _ an ankle bone with an iron nail the
size of a railroad spike sticking through it.

"This is the only archaeological evidence in the world of
crucifixion," said Mevorah, who said the ankle had been nailed through
the side and not from the front as in depictions of Jesus'
crucifixion.

The remains are believed to belong to a man named Yonathan Ben
Hagkol. Little is known about the victim, except that he was buried in
the same tomb with the ossuary of a man said to be Simon, builder of
the Jewish Temple, and may have been a member of the same family.

Museum officials said they have been reluctant to display the
crucifixion relic in the past, fearing it would reignite the
controversy over who was to blame for Jesus' death or that the
artifact would be incorrectly linked to Jesus himself.

Museum director James Snyder said a special path had been
established to guide Christian pilgrims through the museum so they
will be able to see exhibits most closely related to biblical
accounts. He said security was adequate to protect the artifacts.

The web site of U.S. Embassy in Beijing was hacked Saturday Beijing

1. NATO Admits Chinese Embassy Was Mistakenly Targeted
----------------------------------------------------------------------

[CND, 05/08/99] Three NATO missiles hit the Chinese embassy in
Belgrade Friday midnight, nearly destroying the embassy compound,
killing 3 Chinese journalists and seriously injurying 7 others.

Major General Walter Jertz, NATO's military spokesman, said in a news
conference Saturday that the Chinese embassy building had been
specifically aimed at, and that the precision weapons used against it
had not misfired or gone astray.

The strikes - at 11.50pm Friday, Belgrade time - hit three "aim
points" on the building exactly as programmed. They may have been
launched from hundreds of miles away. "The information we had was that
that building was the headquarters of the Federal Directorate for
Supply and Procurement," the NATO military spokesman said. "There was
an error in the targeting process which caused us to attack the wrong
building. We are now reviewing this process," he added.

NATO said that one possible explanation is that Nato commanders were
working from old maps - the embassy building is in a new area of town
and was only completed three to four years ago. Nato targeters may
also have got the embassy mixed up with the building next door, which
is reported to be a construction supply firm. The real federal supply
depot is 800 yards from the embassy, but the Yugoslav authorities have
insisted that it contained only food.

But the failure to identify the Chinese embassy - which is listed in
public telephone directories, clearly signposted, and has a Chinese
flag flying outside - indicates a substantial failure of intelligence.
NATO said its chiefs are launching an urgent investigation.

The NATO military spokesman refused to identify which nationality of
aircraft bombed the embassy nor specify the type of weapons used in
the attack, but said they were precision-guided and that there was
"more than one". Western journalists believe that given the
sophistication of the weapon used, it was almost certain to have been
a U.S. attack.

At Saturday's news conference, NATO spokesman Jamie Shea said "we
attacked many military targets successfully last night, but I admit
that everything is overshadowed by this very bad attack. We have the
best intentions and have taken great care not to inflict deliberate
civilian casualties, but sometimes even our best intentions are not
sufficient."

China CCTV reported that during the NATO news conference in Brussels,
NATO spokesman Jamie Shea did not allow Xinhua reporter to ask any
questions. Shea said NATO will continue air raids on Yugoslavia.

After the news conference, the Xinhua reporter followed Shea to his
office and asked the following question:

Q: Do you think the attack was in violation of Vienna Convention? A:
No, I don't think so, because it was a mistake and our target
   was not civilians.

On Saturday, U.S. President Bill Clinton broke his silence on
the Chinese embassy attack. He said the NATO attack was a "tragic
mistake" and offered his "sincere regret and condolence to the leaders
and people of China." Clinton also vowed that NATO would not stop
attacks on Serbian until Serbia stops ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. (Bo

2. U.N. Security Council Fails to Reach Consensus on Embassy
Attack
----------------------------------------------------------------------

[CND, 05/08/99] The United Nations Security Council held open debate
Saturday morning on the NATO bombing of the Chinese embassy in
Belgrade.

The move came after the Security Council completed three-hour
closed-door consultations on the matter.

Hong Kong CTN TV reports that during the debate, the 15 Security
Council member countries expressed their regret and offered condolence
to the victims of the bombing. However, except for China and Russia,
all other 13 countries insisted that the attack was only an innocent
mistake and refused to condemn NATO for the attack. No consensus was
reached at the end of the debate.

U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan hopes the Chinese embassy bombing
will not stall Kosovo peace process. He said on Saturday "I hope the
incident will not unduly complicate the solution. In my judgement,
this is one more reason why we should intensify the search for a
political solution to the crisis."

Hong Kong CTN TV said that it is unlikely that China would veto any
proposed U.N. resolution on Kosovo because China apparently does not
want to offend Muslim countries.

The Security Council also held an emergency meeting late Friday at
China's request. During Friday's emergency meeting, non Security
Council members Iran, Cuba, Iraq, Yugoslavia etc. requested to speak
in support of China. The meeting failed to produce any agreement and
China distributed a draft of Security Council Chairman Statement that
China proposed to publish, but so far it was not approved by the
Security Council. (Bo XIONG)

3. Anti-U.S. Demonstrations Staged in Major Chinese Cities
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Anti-U.S. Demonstrations Staged in Major Chinese Cities
2) Mass Protests Against NATO Bombing of Chinese Embassy
                     ___ ___ ___

[CND, 05/09/99] China CCTV's Saturday hourly news reports, apparently
permitted by the government, on mass rallies for the first time since
June 1989, encouraged more people to take streets of major Chinese
cities to protest U.S.-Led NATO missile attack on Chinese embassy in
Belgrade.

Since Saturday morning, hundreds of thousands students and citizens
have gone on streets in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenyang and
Chengdu to rally outside U.S. embassy and consulates and embassies and
consulates of other NATO countries which participate attack on
Yugoslavia.

CCTV emphasized that the demonstrations were approved by Public
Security Bureaus and only aired relatively peaceful scenes of angry
demonstrations.

Hong Kong CTN TV reported that in Beijing, around midnight Saturday,
thousands of people surrounded U.S. embassy and threw Molotov cocktail
into the embassy compound. Outside the embassy, several embassy cars
were smashed, turned over and set on fire. A protester from Harbin
city dashed his car into U.S. embassy compound.

Sunday morning, about 10,000 students again got together outside
U.S. embassy in Beijing, some of them managed to enter U.S. embassy
and removed U.S. flag.

In Shanghai, students forced into U.S. Consulate compound and lowered
U.S. flag to half staff Saturday. A large, chanting crowd threw rocks
and bottles at the U.S. Consulate.

In Chengdu, U.S. General Consul's residence was set on fire and
nearly burned down. However, police stopped people from entering the
Consulate main building on Saturday.

In Guangzhou, tens of thousand students and citizens tried to enter
U.S. Consulate compound. U.S. Consul General accepted a letter of
protest from protesters at the door.

Hong Kong CTN TV also reported that there have been demonstrations in
other major cities including Shenyang, Tianjin, Congqing, Wuhan,
Shenzhen and Harbin.

Protesters chanted anti-U.S. and anti-NATO slogans, some of them
displayed signs such as "ZHU Rongji Step Down!" and "Down With
Traitors!" referring to the concessions China reportedly made in
recent WTO negotiation with U.S.

The government dispatched thousands of policemen and PLA soldiers to
affected foreign embassies and consulates. Hong Kong CTN TV said the
police took the attitude of not encouraging protesters nor stopping
them, as long as they do not try to enter diplomatic compound. (Bo

2) Mass Protests Against NATO Bombing of Chinese Embassy
   From: tllau@hknet.com 05/08/99

Mass protests occurred in major Chinese cities, such as Beijing,
Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, after Chinese embassy in Belgrade was
bombed by NATO missiles on May 7, 1999, resulting in the deaths of
four Chinese citizens, including two journalists. In Chengdu,
demonstrators set fire on the US consulate and PLA soldiers were
deployed to protect it. This is the largest demonstration in mainland
China since the 1989 bloody crackdown. Sources in Hong Kong claimed
the demonstration may have been encouraged by the Chinese government.

In Beijing, students from major universities took to the street after
the news of NATO bombing of Chinese embassy broke out. They staged a
protest outside the US embassy in Beijing. Their protest was joined by
other Beijing citizens in the evening. The latter clashed with the
police and damaged some of the cars nearby. The Chinese television
reported the protest but declined to mention the clash with the
police. This is the largest protest of the university students since
1989.

Source in Hong Kong claimed that the protests were approved by Jiang
Ze-min, but this has not been confirmed yet. However, even if the
Chinese government has not actively supported the demonstrations, it
has at least done nothing to suppress them --- a very untypical
position in view of the approaching 10th anniversary of the Tiananmen
Massacre. The source said Jiang was afraid the suppression of these
"patriotic demonstrations" will lead to further discontent with the
government.

Other sources said the Central Political Bureau has held an emergency
meeting to discuss on the bombing. It is said that the PLA generals
were not satisfied with the government's relatively "soft" position
regarding the Kosovo issue and the government was under pressure to
adopt a stronger stance. Zhang Wan-nian, vice chairman of the Central
Military Committee, was asked to pacify these generals.

Protesters on the mainland seem to believe the NATO bombing was done
deliberately, despite NATO's apology and explanation that the missiles
were originally targeted at Serbian military objects.

Subject: [BPR] - Six day creation
From: bpr-list@philologos.org(BPR)
Date: Sun, 9 May 1999 10:50:00 +0000

From: "Moza" <moza@butterfly.mv.com>

Zola Levitt, on his TV program, has been doing a series called
"Evidence of God." Yesterday (5/8/99) he did a short recap (10
minutes) of Dr. Gerald Schroeder's creation theory and this is what I
got out of that recap (I have not seen the shows leading up to this
one).

Dr. Schroeder starts with the "Big Bang." This has nothing to do with
evolution, etc. but is just a time in the past when the act of
creation occurred. It has been calculated to have happend about 15
billion years ago. At that particular time, an explosion took place
that formed the universe. It started as a very small speck and
expanded and has expanded from that time to now. By looking at the
most distant stars, the expansion is said to be 1,000,000,000,000
times bigger than when it began. Using this information, the
following was presented:

(these are all APPROXIMATES)
Divide
15,000,000,000
by
1,000,000,000,000
equals
.015
multiplied by
365 days in a year
equals
approximately 6 days

Dr. Schroeder's contention is that we have seen the passing of 15
billion years on earth, but from another perspective we are only at
the end of the sixth day. If a clock was started in a fixed position
at the time of the Big Bang it would be measuring time differently
than a clock attached to one of the particles moving away in the
explosion. There have been experiments done that show this
phenomenon. An atomic clock on earth is calibrated to an atomic
clock on an airplane. The airplane takes off and travels at such a
high speed that when the two clocks are measured again, the one that
has been in the plane has lost some time compared to the one that
stayed on earth. The faster you go, the slower time moves.

Just exactly how you perceive this moving of time depends on
perspective. An example given was that you can see the moon in the
sky and it looks about the size of coin but that is misleading. We
know the moon is much bigger than a coin, but because of the distance
involved it looks small. From our perspective on earth the moon is
very small, from an astronaut's perspective while walking on the
moon, it is very large. This is an example with regards to distance
and the same can be applied to the matter of time.

I am sure I haven't done justice to this theory but I found it
interesting enough to pass along. If anyone would like more info you
can order a copy of Dr. Schroeder's small booklet entitled "Genesis
One" for $5.00 by calling 1-800-966-3377. From some of the pictures
shown while Mr. Levitt was talking, it looks like Dr.Schroeder goes
through each day of the Genesis account and expands on his theory.

NO WATER YET

"Even if there is water, so what?" So says Rabbi Yosef Elbaum of
Jerusalem, one of the leaders of the campaign to raise public
consciousness of the Jewish people's connection with the Temple Mount.
He was referring to rumors of water flowing from under the Foundation
Stone on the Temple Mount, which, according to the Prophets, will
occur after the Beit HaMikdash (Holy Temple) is rebuilt. Rabbi Elbaum
told an Arutz-7 correspondent today that after speaking with a
Jerusalem police official stationed in the Old City, he assumes that
the story is not true. "First of all, even if it is true, there is no
practical significance. We have no commandments that we are required
to fulfill with such water - as opposed to if we had found a red
heifer, for instance. The flowing water is merely supposed to be a
Divine gift. Secondly, such a thing is very hard to verify. The
Foundation Stone is 13 by 17 meters in size, and it has steps leading
down to a large cave. The room around it is even bigger. It would be
like asking someone to find a trickle of water in the Jerusalem
Convention Center..." Rabbi Elbaum concluded, "We should concentrate
our energies on having Jews come to visit the Halakhically-permitted
areas of the Temple Mount [after having undergone the proper
purification ceremonies]."

PLAN TO UNIFY JERUSALEM

The government decided today to allocate 400 million shekels over the
next five years for the development of infrastructures in eastern
Jerusalem, in the framework of the plan to physically unify the city.
In addition, incentive-grants of 20,000 shekels will be given to
purchasers of apartments in the capital's new neighborhoods. The
Finance Ministry objects to the granting of the benefits, saying that
it will not be able to fund them.

BACK TO THE TOWER OF BABEL
(Source: Amy Steinberg, THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE/ASSOCIATED PRESS,

Speaking at the 11th annual SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE sponsored
by the DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE, Sen. Bob Bennett (R-Utah), Chairman of
the Senate's SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON THE YEAR 2000 TECHNOLOGY PROBLEM,
warned that the Year 2000 computer bug could cause chaos. "The world
speaks a common language called digital code. If the connection gets
broken, we're back to the Tower of Babel where we cannot talk to each
other. We can't trade securities. We can't change currency. We
can't exchange information. Everything shuts down." For the
military, the implications are "staggering," Bennett said. Since so
much of the world relies on computers, bringing military computers
up-to-date while maintaining security will be a major challenge. The
time will come when "an enemy's infrastructure can be destroyed in a
matter of nanoseconds with a few keystrokes," he said. That means
that while Y2K might not be the end of the world as we know it, things
will never be the way they were before the information age. "It's a
different kind of warfare, but it's not Buck Rogers....The technology
is there." (JG)

Israel orders shutdown of Palestinian offices in Jerusalem

The PLO warns of "confrontations" if Israel tries to shut down its
offices at the Orient House May 9, 1999 Web posted at: 11:04 a.m. EDT
(1504 GMT)

JERUSALEM (AP) -- Israel on Sunday ordered the closing of three
offices at the PLO's headquarters in Arab east Jerusalem, setting the
stage for a potential pre-election confrontation with Palestinians.

Israeli police spokeswoman Linda Menuhin said the order would be
served Sunday evening, but that officials had been told to try to find
a way to carry it out "without resort to force."

Faisal Husseini, the Palestine Liberation Organization official who
heads the complex known as Orient House, said "there will be
confrontations" if Israeli authorities try to shut down the offices.

But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to move ahead.

"We will close these offices," he told a rally on Sunday. "We will
either close them with an agreement, or we will have to close them
without an agreement."

The two sides have been locked in conflict for weeks over the fate of
Orient House. Israel says it is illegal for Yasser Arafat's
Palestinian Authority to have a de facto headquarters in Jerusalem
pending the outcome of negotiations on the disputed city's status.

The Palestinians say their use of the premises as a headquarters for
their negotiating team and as a branch office for the Palestine
Liberation Organization is legitimate.

Orient House lawyer Jawad Boulos said he was told the closure order
would take effect at 7 p.m. (1700 GMT) barring a last-minute
compromise.

Talks were taking place in the hours leading up to the deadline,
including a meeting between Husseini and U.S. consul John Herbst. Also
possible was a Supreme Court appeal by an Israeli group on the
Palestinians' behalf, which could further delay the closure.

Boulos said Israel rejected a Palestinian compromise offer to move two
offices -- the political branch of the Palestinians' international
relations department, and the settler-watching unit in the maps
department -- outside of Jerusalem.

Palestinian officials have accused Netanyahu of deliberately courting
confrontation over the issue in order to bolster his tough image in
advance of the hotly contested May 17 vote for prime minister.

"We are being used as part of the elections -- they want to create an
atmosphere of tension so that they can use it in the elections," chief
Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told The Associated Press.

Palestinian political groups including Arafat's Fatah movement vowed
in a statement not to stand by idly if the offices were shut down.

"Israel will be the sole party responsible for what should happen if
it goes ahead with this decision," Erekat said.

The Palestinians said European consul generals had promised to attend
a solidarity rally at Orient House on Monday. Israel has been
irritated by Europeans' expressions of support for keeping the offices
open

John 21: The 153 fish and the net

During March I attempted to try to bring the South Australian
Moderator of the Uniting Church to realise that the Bible is an inspired
book, that Genesis and everything else in it is true, and that the
genealogies provided in the Gospels (Matthew and Luke) are accurate.
I did this by writing him a letter that suggested that it is science that
needs to be correlated with the Bible, not the other way around, and
also by providing him with a number of web sites where he could find
work by gifted Christians that would help him to realise that there were
two sides to the coin.

As a result of my efforts I received back a letter that evidenced he
would never countenance such an opinion, and two photocopies of
standing letters that he sends out to fundamentalists. A
fundamentalist being a person who believes that the bible is true and
written by God using people, rather than a group of writings that
speak about God written by men and therefore bound to contain
errors.

Amongst these (blasphemous) writings, was a castigation of the
Gospel genealogies, claiming that they proven by theologians to be
wrong. I knew that not all theologians thought this, so I printed out
the work on this by the late Arthur Custance
(http://www.custance.org/adamjesus.html), intending to send it to him.
After a few days I decided that I would be wasting my time. This man
didn't want to change his mind, and although I felt (and feel) sorry for
him, there would be people more worthy of this gem than he. This
particular work is the genealogy of Christ from Adam. Arthur
Custance is a very wise and intelligent man, with a list of degrees as
long as my arm, covering fields such as languages and psychology.
He shows, as others have also shown and said, that Jesus was the
77th generation from Adam. This number of generations remained in
my mind, and it was while contemplating the meaning of the 153 fish in
John 21:11, that the Holy Spirit enlightened me as to the meaning, not
only of the 153 fish, but also the chapter itself. I have the Moderator
of the Uniting Church to thank for this!

It is dawn, the sky painted with the colours of the sunrise. A new day.
On the Sea of Galilee seven fishermen, disciples of Jesus Christ, are
returning to shore after having fished the night through. They are
despondent because they caught nothing. On the beach stands a
man. Behind him is a small fire, the smoke rising upwards in the still
morning air.

John 21: 4-12a: Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the beach;
yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them,
"Children, have you any fish?" They answered him, "No." He said to
them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find
some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, for the
quantity of fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved [John] said to Peter,
"It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put
on his clothes, for he was stripped for work, and sprang into the sea.

But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish,
for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.
When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish
lying on it, and bread.

Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just
caught." So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full
of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and although there
were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, "Come and
have breakfast."

Wouldn't you love to have been there? Our Lord cooking us a
breakfast of freshly caught fish and bread. What an honour! What an
occasion!

I want to show you the symbolism evident to me and necessary for
you to understand the meaning of the 153 fish and the net.

Symbol:This is Jesus third appearance to His disciples since His
resurrection.
Inference: He will visit mankind on earth three times: two are past, His
birth and role as a Servant; In His Resurrected state having become
our Saviour; and as a King.

Symbol: There are seven disciples present.
Inference: Seven is the number of completion.

Symbol: The disciples still didn't recognise him immediately.
Inference: If His disciples don't recognise Him after three appearances,
how easily will it be to fool people in the future when someone
performing miracles claims to be Christ?

Symbol: The disciples are told to cast their net on the RIGHT side of
the boat.
Inference: Jesus Christ, the church, sits at right side of God.

Symbol: Simon Peter sprang into the sea.
Inference: Simon Peter represents the Church. The Church keenly
awaits the Lord and races to be with him. In the rapture, the Church
will be taken from the sea of humanity, and brought to Him as His
bride.

Symbol: Simon Peter put on his clothes.
Inference: The Bride will be dressed in white robes for the wedding
feast.

Symbol: John, although recognising Jesus, remained in the boat.
Inference: Israel, represented by the casual and laid-back and favourite
son, John, does not clamour to be with Jesus, although Jesus loves
Israel above all other nations. This is as Israel still, essentially, is.

Symbol: The other disciples stayed with the boat.
Inference: As occurs now and will happen in the future, people
outside of the Church (Peter) will tarry in their journey to Christ.

Now a lot of commentators have pondered over the meaning of the
153 fish. Some suggestions to be found in study bibles and other
commentaries are:

* The numbering of the fish proves that John was an eyewitness

* There were 153 species of fish in the sea (since shown to be wrong)

* One refers to Shem's race, three refers to Ham's race, and five refers
to Japheth's race (Noah's sons)

* 153 is the number of people Jesus ministers to in the Gospel of John

* Jesus lived for 12,240 days which equals 80 x 153; and

* Jesus ministered for 918 days which equals 6 x 153.

The use of fish in the Bible to represent mankind is common. In Mark
1:17 we read, And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you
become fishers of men." In Matthew 13:47-50 we read of Jesus talking
to His disciples in a house after having addressed thousands by the
Sea of Galilee: "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net which was
thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind; when it was full,
men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into vessels but
threw away the bad. So it will be at the close of the age. The angels
will come out and separate the evil from the righteous, and throw them
into the furnace of fire; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.".

We read in Luke 5:6-7: And when they had done this, they enclosed a
great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to
their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came
and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. . In the case of
John 21, the net does not break, and John, the author, expresses his
surprise.

Not only is the large catch of 153 fish significant, so is the matter that
the net does not break.

Further examples of fish are that a fish was a symbol for Christianity
used by the early church, it is to be seen today as a bumper-sticker,
we have the Sea of humanity, and the church is thought to be
represented by the constellation Pisces.

If the 153 fish is to mean anything at all, it must be to do with mankind.
It is here that I will tie in my opening discussion about Jesus being the
77th generation from Adam. We can rewrite these 77 generations as 76
+ 1, meaning 76 generations, then 1 generation of which Jesus was a
member.

If we subtract 77 from 153 (fish) we find: 153 - 77 = 76. Interesting? Can
you see where this leads?

This number (153) can thus be interpreted to symbolise this: Jesus
came following the first 76 generations of man and will return
following the next 76 generations of man: at the 77th and 154th.

Do you put it down to something quaint or coincidental, even in view
of the symbolism already discussed, or do you accept that this is the
case? Even the number of Jesus two generations is perfect
considering the way that God the Father does good things in sevens:
every 77th generation!

It has already been pointed out that the net that lifted these 153 fish
out of the water did not break and it has been shown that this was not
always the case. If the 153 fish represent 153 generations of man and
that Jesus was the one who directed that net to be put in the water,
what must the unbroken net holding the fish, be a symbol of? The
church; the body of Christ! If a painting were to be done of a net
containing 153 fish, with water dripping of their skins and everything,
it could be called the body of Christ and I m sure that Jesus would
approve.

The picture could also be called, the removal of the body of Christ
from the sea of humanity , or, to put it into eschatological terminology,
the rapture of the body of Christ from the earth .

There is a little more that can be said about these 153 fish: they are all
described as large. This we can take to mean that they are fully-grown
and that this implies that the rapture will not occur until the 153rd
generation of the church is fully-grown or has reached adult-hood.
This is why Jesus didn t know when He would return. This is why
nobody will know. Perhaps it means waiting until person number
106,241,205 has her 21st birthday. Jesus knew the generation he would
follow, but because of humanity s variability in its generation rates,
the when of His return is literally in the Father s hands. If you read
John 21 further, you will find Peter receiving instruction about
nurturing the church as it matures: love me: feed my lambs, love me:
tend my sheep, love me: feed my sheep; and is told that when the
church is old, others will carry it where it does not want to go.

(I realise that Jesus questioning of Peter's love for Him can also be
related to Peter's disobedience, where he three times denied Jesus, and
that Jesus is offering Peter an antidote for those denials (pardon the
brevity of that explanation), but Jesus is also stressing the need for
love for Him to be a prerequisite to being a shepherd of His sheep; the
church. After each "Do you love me?", Jesus responds to Peter's
responses with instructions about His flock.)

The church today is tottering under the weight of a multi-religious
doctrine. The World Council of Churches uses and embraces religions
that do not embrace Christ. The WCC is not about Christ. They
embrace the Aboriginal Dreamtime, Smoke rituals, Spirits of the dead,
and it has been suggested that the Bible should be interpreted also
from the perspective of birds, water, air, trees, and mountains.

We see, as the article opened, that churches are questioning the
inerrancy of the Bible. Other examples are (of many): in some churches
homosexuality is not considered a sin; some British ministers openly
doubt that Christ rose again; and the Bible is being rewritten replacing
Father with Mother.

Indeed Peter is old and being taken where he does not want to go.

As a warning to those who think that this article will enable the
determining of the Lord's return, note this: for the three generations
still living in our family, the ages of people when first becoming
parents ranges from 19 to 34, the Biblical generation is 40 years, and
current dictionary definitions for a generation vary from 25 years to
1/3rd of a life span. Attempting to determine a date from this
information without reference to other scripture, will be without basis.

Jesus will return one day, and whether we are dead or not, the best
thing you can do is to make sure that you haven't wasted the gifts that
God has given you.

God bless,
David Elphick

China Gains U.S. Technologies During Satellite Launches:
Senate

[CND, 05/09/99] A U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee report concluded
that critical technical information had been transferred to China from
American companies during collaboration in satellite launches, Reuters
reported on Saturday.

"Because such analyses and methodologies are also applicable to the
development of other missile systems, the committee believes that,
where practicable, the PRC [China] will use the transferred
information to improve its short range ballistic missiles,
intermediate range ballistic missiles, and related technology," stated
the report. "These missiles could threaten U.S. forces stationed in
Japan and Korea, as well as allies in the region," the report added.

During the investigations into the failure of satellite launches, such
as the launch of Apstar-2 satellite in 1995 and that of an Intelsat
708 satellite in 1996, U.S. firms supplied detailed information to the
Chinese launch service units, according to the report.

The Senate Intelligence Committee called for a review of the policy
that allows U.S. commercial satellites to be handled by Chinese launch
service providers. There have been 33 satellite launches approved by
US since 1990. (ZHOU, Haosheng, WU Yiyi)

China Exploited U.S. Satellite Export: Report

[CND, 05/09/99] The Senate Intelligence Committee released on Friday
a report on the U.S. mishandling of commercial satellite export to
China following a bipartisan vote of approval, AP reported from
Washington.

Highly critical of the U.S. government of easing export regulations,
putting commercial interests in front of national security, the report
said the U.S. government failed to adequately fund satellite export
security teams and to enforce security provisions designed to prevent
foreign nations from getting sensitive U.S. technologies, over a
prolonged period that spans both the Bush and Clinton administrations.
China, on the other hand, shrewdly lobbied and manipulated U.S.
satellite companies that were too eager to cut deals. As a result,
Beijing secured technologies useful in improving its ballistic
missiles, even though the committee failed to find evidence of Chinese
utilization of such in its current ICBM arsenal.

The report cited two specific cases in which U.S. companies are
alleged to have helped China improve its rockets after Chinese
commercial rockets carrying U.S.-built satellites crashed. Loral Space
& Communications and Hughes Electronics are currently under federal
investigation for the roles they played in the ensuing technical
analysis following the failed launches of their satellites by China in
1995 and 1996.

The United States started to relax export regulations on industry
request to allow China to provide launching service of U.S. made
satellites back when Reagon was in the White House. Both the Bush and
Clinton administrations have issued export licenses to companies
requesting such services from China. Satellite arriving in China for
launch are supposed to be under close watch to keep China from
accessing guarded technical secrets. (LUO Zhenyuan, YIN De An)

U.S. Government Websites Hacked, Ambassador's Statement

[CND, 05/10/99] The website of U.S. Embassy in Beijing was hacked
Saturday Beijing time. A protest letter was posted to the front page.

On May 9 and 10, the websites of U.S. Department of Energy and U.S.
Department of the Interior were also hacked by protesters against
UNATO attack on Chinese embassy in Belgrade.

Mirror copies of the hacked pages were archived at http://www.cnd.org
and http://proxy.cnd.org (a link on top page).

On Sunday, the web site was restored. The following message from U.S.
ambassador to China is displayed on front page at
http://www.usembassy-china.org.cn/

Statement of American Ambassador James Sasser (May 9, 1999)

Ambassador James Sasser and the entire staff of the American Embassy
and consulates express their profound sorrow to the people of China
over the NATO bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, and offer
deepest condolences to the families of the innocent victims of that
deplorable accident.

As President Clinton said, "It was a tragic mistake." We must not let
this mistake impede further progress in developing stronger U.S.-China
relations that are so fundamentally in the interest of both our
countries. (Bo XIONG)

Embassy Staff Virtual Hostages: U.S. Ambassador to China

[CND, 05/09/99] Encouraged by the government, thousands of angry
demonstrators have surrounded the U.S. embassy in Beijing since
Saturday morning, AFP reported.

The protesters threw rocks and molotov cocktails into the embassy
compound and made it impossible for any American to leave the embassy,
despite that China CCTV says the demonstrations were orderly and
peaceful under approval by the government.

The U.S. ambassador to China James Sasser told CBS television Sunday
in a telephone interview that "We are hostages here in this embassy.
They have broken all the windows here and we simply cannot leave the
building."

"A number of the many thousands of demonstrators may even be being
bused in to the vicinity of our embassy," he said, stressing "it's now
exceeding government expectations ... there is always the danger that
its going to go out of control."

While "there is concern that, with the level of demonstrators
increasing, things could get out of hand," he said, "we have received
assurances that they [Chinese officials] are taking steps to protect
our personnel."

Sasser also said "Certainly our sense is that the Chinese government
is able to intervene effectively to minimize these demonstrations, and
we hope that they will."

The White House was "confident" that Beijing would "take the necessary
precautions to ensure the safety of our personnel throughout China."
The U.S. embassy personnel have been eating food from the embassy
Marine storage.

Sasser complained that the police force guarding the embassy compound
did not take any action to stop people from throwing rocks, eggs,
bottles and molotov cocktails into the embassy.

U.S. embassy in Beijing will be closed for Monday and Tuesday due to
the protests.

U.S. Consulates in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenyang and Chengdu were also
barricaded and staff had to ask police for help to leave safely.

Hong Kong CTN TV says that some local TV stations did live broadcast
of demonstrations which was extremely rare in China.

U.S. government has asked U.S. citizens in China to stay inside and
take precaution for their personal safety.

Besides U.S. embassy and consulates, U.K. embassy and consulates in
China were also targets of demonstrators. (Bo XIONG, YIN De An)

Angry Protesters Reappear at U.S. and British Embassies in
Beijing

[CND, 05/10/99] Hundreds of student protesters reappeared on Monday in
front of the U.S. and British embassies in Beijing, Reuters reported.
They chanted slogans such as "Pay blood debts with blood" and "Disband
NATO." Riot police formed a human chain to prevent the protesters
from entering the embassy compounds.

It is reported that there had been no protesters in the early morning
Monday. Police were eating their breakfast on the sidewalks when the
protesters started pouring in. (Jian-Min LI)

China Suspends Military Contacts and Human Rights Dialogue
With U.S

[CND, 05/10/99] "China has decided to postpone the high-level military
contacts with the United States," Foreign Ministry spokesman ZHU
Bangzao said in a statement, according to a Reuters report Monday.

"China has decided to postpone its consultations with the United
States in the fields of proliferation prevention, arms control and
international security," Zhu added.

China has also suspended its human rights dialogue with the U.S., Zhu
said in the statement. (Jian-Min LI)

U.S. State Department Warned Americans Against Travel To
China

[CND, 05/09/99] The U.S. State Department on Sunday suspended official
travel to China by all government employees and urged other Americans
to put off plans to visit, according to Reuters. The department also
told U.S. citizens in China to "remain in, or very close to, their
homes or hotels, review their security practices, stay alert to the
changing situation and avoid crowds and demonstrations."

The department said "conditions remain volatile" as a result of "the
extremely high anti-NATO and anti-American sentiment." (Jian-Min LI)

Chinese Vice President's Speech on Embassy Bombing
(Televised)
May 9, 1999

BEIJING (Reuters) -- The following is the full text of a speech by
Chinese Vice President HU Jintao about NATO's strike on the Chinese
embassy in Belgrade and the widespread protests against it. The text
of the televised speech was released Sunday by the official Chinese
news agency Xinhua.

"Comrades, friends:

"Early on the morning of May 8, U.S.-led NATO wantonly used missiles
to attack the Chinese embassy in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia,
causing casualties and leaving the embassy buildings devastated.

"The criminal act, which is in violation of the international laws and
norms of international relations, has aroused the utmost indignation
of the Chinese people.

"As of yesterday, people across the country have held forums and
gatherings and issued letters or telegrams of protest to voice their
support to the solemn statement of the Chinese government and to
condemn the barbaric acts of the U.S.-led NATO.

"Students and other citizens in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu
and Shenyang cities have also held demonstrations near the U.S.
diplomatic missions in China. All those activities have reflected
their strong indignation at U.S.- led NATO's attack on the Chinese
Embassy in Yugoslavia and the keen patriotism of the Chinese people.

"The Chinese government firmly supports and protects, in accordance
with the law, all legal protest activities. We believe that the broad
masses will, proceeding from the fundamental interests of the nation
and taking the overall situation into account, carry out the
activities in good order and in accordance with law.

"We must prevent overreaction and ensure social stability by guarding
against some people making use of the opportunities to disrupt the
normal public order.

"The Chinese government unswervingly upholds the independent foreign
policy of peace, firmly safeguards state sovereignty and national
dignity and resolutely opposes hegemony and power politics.

"We will uphold the policy of reform and opening to the outside world.
We will protect, in accordance with relevant international laws and
norms of international relations as well as relevant laws of China,
foreign diplomatic organs and personnel, foreign nationals in China
and those who have come to China to engage in trade, economic,
educational and cultural undertakings, and reflect the civilization
and fine traditions of the Chinese nation.

"The Chinese people are people who uphold justice and love peace. We
are willing, together with the people of other countries across the
world, to support each other and strengthen cooperation and work in
concerted efforts for mankind's great cause of peace and development.

"Let us unite closely around the Central Committee of the Communist
Party of China with Comrade Jiang Zemin at the core, hold high the
great banner of Deng Xiaoping theory, be inspired with enthusiasm and
work with concerted efforts to push forward into the 21st century the
great cause of building socialism with Chinese characteristics."

*** U.S. warns China on demonstrations

WASHINGTON (AP) - The bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade that
has sparked anti-American demonstrations in Beijing and other Chinese
cities was the result of misinformation from CIA target planners, a
U.S. government official says. Meanwhile, American diplomatic
officials and lawmakers warned that those demonstrations, which the
Chinese government has sanctioned and at times assisted, could
seriously affect U.S.-China relations if they are allowed to grow out
of control. Those relations took a further downturn today when China
suspended high-level military contacts with the United States and
postponed talks on human rights, arms control, international security
and arms proliferation. Assistant Secretary of State Stanley Roth also
canceled a planned visit to Beijing. See

*** Palestinians, Israelis seek deal

JERUSALEM (AP) - Palestinian and Israeli officials held last-minute
meetings Sunday over the closing of offices at the PLO's headquarters
in Jerusalem, seeking to avert a confrontation days before Israeli
elections. Israeli police officials met with a lawyer for the Orient
House headquarters past a 7 p.m. deadline set by Israel to shut down
the complex if a compromise had not been worked out. U.S. officials
were also in touch with both sides to try and negotiate the dispute.
After efforts to resolve the brewing crisis ended without a deal
Sunday, Israeli and Palestinian negotiators agreed to try again
Monday. See

*** New Jordan king to visit U.S., Canada

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) - Jordan's King Abdullah began a six-nation
Western tour Saturday intended to lobby for debt forgiveness and
strengthen support for the throne he inherited three months ago.
Abdullah, on his first tour to Western countries as king, was to
visit England, Germany, Canada, the United States, France and Italy.
In recent remarks to foreign journalists, Abdullah said he plans to
ask President Clinton to rally the world's leading industrial nations
to forgive half of Jordan's $7 billion in debt and annual debt
servicing. Among those accompanying Abdullah are members of the royal
court, Jordanian businessmen and economists. See

*** Pope makes rare Romanian trip

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) - Pope John Paul II pushed ahead Sunday with
efforts to break down barriers that divide Christianity, calling on
Orthodox Christians in Romania to "exchange the embrace of peace." In
the first visit by a Roman pontiff to a mainly Orthodox country in
nearly 1,000 years, the pope embraced Romania's Orthodox patriarch and
declared the time has come to put "every form of fear and suspicion"
between their churches behind them. The pope's three-day trip to
Romania was also seen as a launching pad for John Paul's ambitious
plans: a meeting with the patriarch of Russia, leader of the largest
Orthodox church, and a trip to Moscow. See

*** Russia marks memory of Nazi defeat

MOSCOW (AP) - Thousands of soldiers and musicians paraded across
Moscow's Red Square on Sunday as Russians took part in nationwide
celebrations to mark the 54th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi
Germany in World War II. Russia lost a staggering 27 million people in
the war, and Victory Day is a revered holiday. Television has shown
scores of Soviet-era war movies over the last several days, and
posters and signs celebrating the day are plastered around Moscow and
other cities. Still, much of the fervor surrounding the anniversary
has died down since Soviet days, when the holiday was celebrated as a
communist victory over fascism. See

*** Pakistan plans nuclear celebrations

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) - Calling Pakistan's underground nuclear test
a symbol of national pride, the government has planned 18 days of
celebration to mark its first anniversary. The festivities begin May
10 with public rallies and seminars to mark the tests, which took
place May 28 and May 30 last year. New songs are being written and
state-run television is planning daily programs to honor the
explosions. The government says the celebrations are to motivate
Pakistan's 140 million people to work toward self-reliance. See

*** Meningitis spreads in Sudan

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) - Meningitis has killed more than 1,500 people in
Sudan during the past six months and the disease has spread to two
more provinces, a health official said in remarks published Friday.
New cases of meningitis are being reported in the provinces of Nahr
el-Nil and Shamalia in addition to the 18 provinces in the eastern,
western and central Sudan where 1,513 people have died, the official,
Bashir Ibrahim Mukhtar, said. Mukhtar, an undersecretary in the Heath
Ministry, was quoted by the daily Al-Anbaa as saying that 21,337
people have been infected by the disease since December. Another
newspaper, Al-Rai Al-Aam, reported Friday that the Netherlands has
donated $80,000 to combat the epidemic. See

*** Microsoft plans virtual clinic

REDMOND, Wash. (AP) - James Pittman woke one morning with a strong
squeezing sensation in his chest. Suspecting the worst, the
42-year-old Microsoft programmer wasted no time driving 10 miles to
his doctor's office only to be told - after "a 2-second diagnosis" -
he had pulled a back muscle, probably while painting his home the
previous day. "I don't know what a heart attack feels like," he said.
"And I completely forgot that I was painting the house." Next time
Pittman feels the urge to see the doctor, he may have another option.
Instead of driving across town on a workday, he could log on to his
computer, make sure the small camera atop the monitor is correctly
angled, then point and click to a Web site for "virtual" treatment.

Companies seek chip implants to control staff

by Steve Bevan

BIG BROTHER could soon be watching from the inside. Several
international companies are consulting scientists on ways of
developing microchip implants for their workers to measure their
timekeeping and whereabouts.

The technology, which has been proven on pets and human volunteers,
would enable firms to track staff all around a building or complex.
The data could enable them to draw up estimates of workers' efficiency
and productivity.

Professor Kevin Warwick of Reading University, a leading cybernetics
expert, has been approached by several firms including a leading
software company with a British subsidiary and Blackbaud Inc, the
American software giant. Warwick hit the headlines last summer when
he had a silicon chip transponder surgically implanted in his forearm.
He was subsequently able to show how a computer could monitor every
move he made using detectors that were scattered around the building
in which he worked.

In his experiment, Warwick showed how the system could also benefit
workers by programming it to switch on lights, computers and heating
systems as he entered a room - and turning them off when he left.

The technology is likely to have a strong appeal to companies with
high labour costs, for which small increases in staff productivity can
have a big impact on profits. It is also relatively cheap - just a few
pounds for each person, according to Warwick.

"For a business the potential is obvious," he said. "You can tell when
people clock into work and when they leave the building. You would
know at all times exactly where they were and who they were with."

Warwick admits that people will be "shocked" by the idea of companies
asking their employees to have such implants. He said: "It is pushing
at the limits of what society will accept but it is not such a big
deal. Many employees already carry swipecards. I think this is just a
step on from that."

His research follows earlier experiments by companies such as the
telecommunications firm AT&T that showed how smart cards carried by
staff could be programmed to relay a worker's position back to a
central computer. AT&T Laboratories in Cambridge has been working on
its "smart badges" for two years. They use ultrasound to tell the main
computer exactly where the wearer is, allowing their desktop computers
and phone calls to "follow" them around the building.

The company has, however, stopped short of suggesting staff should
have devices inserted into their bodies.

The first practical application of such technology is, however, not in
humans but in pets. Under the government's new "passports for pets"
scheme, which replaces the quarantine system from 2001, dogs will have
a microchip implanted beneath their skin to identify who they belong
to.

Representatives from police forces in Britain and the United States
have also expressed interest in the implant technology, according to
Warwick.

He believes that submitting to an implant could be made a condition,
for example, of being granted a gun licence.

ORIENT HOUSE: COMPROMISE - OR CLOSURE PAPERS TONIGHT
The mini-security cabinet (Ministers Netanyahu, Sharon, Arens, and
Kahalani) decided early this afternoon to issue the orders for the
closure of three Palestinian Authority offices in the Orient House.
The Prime Minister's Bureau emphasized that the decision was made
after all required legal processes were exhausted. Attempts to reach
a compromise, such as transferring the offices to a Jerusalem suburb,
also failed - although one last attempt was being made as we went to
press late this afternoon. If the PA rejects the latest offer, the
closure orders will be served at 7 PM this evening. Prime Minister
Netanyahu dispatched a personal envoy to Yasser Arafat today to
reiterate Israel's 1996 demand that Arafat uphold his Oslo Accord
commitment to close the Orient House offices. The PLO will still have
the option of turning to the Supreme Court.

Public Security Minister Avigdor Kahalani, who conducted the talks
with the Palestinians on behalf of the government, warned this morning
that closing the Orient House would lead to violence. Finance
Minister Meir Shetreet criticized Kahalani's statements. Education
Minister Rabbi Yitzchak Levy, speaking with Arutz-7 today before the
final decision was announced, said: "We made a decision to close the
offices, and I expect that they will be closed. We are trying to
close them by agreement with the PA, but if we can't reach such a
deal, then we'll close them without their consent."

SHARON IN U.S. FOR CELEBRATION
Foreign Minister Ariel Sharon will depart for the U.S. today, to take
part in the ceremonies marking the 50th anniversary of Israel's
becoming a member of the United Nations. Israel has given the U.N. a
gift to mark the occasion: a stone lintel from the ancient synagogue
in the Galilee village of Kfar Yasif. The Israeli delegation to the
United Nations will host a reception and dinner tonight for over 100
ambassadors to the United Nations, who will be addressed by
Secretary-General Kofi Anan, Foreign Minister Sharon, Dr. Henry
Kissinger and Mr. Abba Eban. During the dinner, a special film
highlighting Israel's international aid efforts will be screened.

NPR HUSHES UP TERRORISM REPORTS
The Journal of Counterterrorism & Security International has just
published a new report on trends on the National Public Radio station
in the United States, concluding that NPR has deliberately censored
stories on Islamic terror activities both in the United States and
around the world. Journalist Steven Emerson, the report's author,
reviewed over 4,000 NPR stories during the past four years. He found
that NPR "engaged in deliberate misrepresentation of the activities of
Islamic terrorist groups and intentionally withheld information on the
pro-terrorist, anti-American, anti-Semitic platform of American-based
front groups for Islamic fundamentalists." The report states, "The
directors of the FBI and the CIA have repeatedly testified that the
primary threat facing the United States today is from militant Islamic
terrorist groups... In the span of four years, [however,] NPR News
has done only one short report exclusively focusing on the militant
Islamic threat in the U.S."

Emerson's study also finds that NPR consistently broadcast uncritical
interviews with, and profiles of, militant Islamic groups falsely
masquerading as civil rights groups. The full report can be viewed at

CEREMONY MARKS END OF WW2
The state ceremony marking the allied victory over Nazi Germany was
held last night at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. Hundreds of Jewish World
War II veterans of allied armies, partisans and disabled ex-servicemen
participated. Prime Minister Netanyahu, Absorption Minister Yuli
Edelstein, Chairman of the Yad Vashem Directorate Avner Shalev, and a
representative of the Jewish fighters, Yitzhak Rozovsky, addressed the

TORAH SCROLL RECOVERED
A very expensive Torah scroll that was stolen some weeks ago from a
synagogue in Givatayim was found yesterday in a Judaica store in Yafo.
The owner of the store admitted in his interrogation that he knew
that the Torah - worth some $24,000 - was stolen. A second Torah
scroll that was stolen at the same time has not been found.

Russia, China Allied Against NATO/U.S.

Weekend News Today
By David Attak
Source: Drudge Report

Mon May 10 , 1999 -- Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen told the Russian
President's special envoy for Yugoslavia Viktor Chernomyrdin that
China and Russia share identical views on many issues including
Kosovo--views that were shared by both the Chinese and Russian
presidents. Qian said that the Chinese President Jiang Zemin and
Russian President Boris Yeltsin consulted each other Monday on the
Kosovo crisis during an "important telephone conversation." Qian said
there is "mutual trust, mutual understanding and mutual support" by
the two countries in the Yugoslav crisis, the Chinese newswire XINHUA
and Russia's TASS reported overnight. Chernomyrdin called the
telephone conversation between Yeltsin and Jiang "very important" and
described the Kosovo crisis as an event that is a concern to "the
whole world and disturbing to people worldwide." Chernomyrdin said "An
embassy has been destroyed, people have died. This was agression,
barbaric methods of solving a problem. It must stop. We cannot put up
with all this."

U.N. deadlocked on Chinese embassy bombing

Weekend News Today
By Kelly Pagatpatan
Source: (Reuters)

Mon May 10 , 1999 -- British ambassador Sir Jeremy Greenstock told
reporters after the 80-minute session: "We had really quite a calm and
sombre discussion in which again very sincere regrets were expressed
by all members of the U.N. council to China for this tragic mistake
that NATO has made in its bombing of the Chinese embassy. "But in
terms of reaching a formal council conclusion there is still too much
difference between China and one or two delegations supporting China
on one hand, and members of NATO on the other end of the spectrum."
Those countries are the United States, Britain, France, Canada and the
Netherlands. A council source said the Chinese draft statement that
would "strongly condemn" the NATO bombing of Beijing's embassy as a
"blatant encroachment on the sovereignty of a U.N. member state," was
supported in the council only by Russia and Nambia.

Arafat to visit Syria

Weekend News Today
By Andra Brack
Source: Arabic News

Mon May 10 , 1999 -- Chairman of the Palestinian National Council
Salim al-Za'noun has stressed that a Syrian-Palestinian summit will be
held shortly, saying that contacts and efforts exerted by Jordan's
King Abdullah and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak have yielded fruit.
The results attained by the Palestinian delegation led by the chairman
of the PLO political department in Damascus are also promising in this
regard. He added that the Palestinian leadership is careful to restore
relations with Syria, "due to its strategic importance and position."
He noted that statements made by the Syrian leadership towards the
Palestinian interests are encouraging. Meanwhile, Palestinian sources
told the Syrian officials that Arafat desires to visit Damascus in
light of the mediation held by King Abdullah of Jordan. A high-ranking
Palestinian official told the paper in Gaza that he can assert that
King Abdullah discussed the issue of Arafat's visit to Damascus with
President Hafez al-Assad and that the "window for discussions was kept
open and that the Egyptian officials are working in the same
direction."

*** Clinton OKs Chinese rocket launch

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Clinton removed the last roadblock Monday
from the launch of a Chinese rocket carrying a satellite into space
next month for the U.S.-led Iridium global paging and telephone
network. In a required report to Congress, Clinton certified that the
export of satellite fuels and separation systems for the
communications system would not harm U.S. interests. The launch is
scheduled for June 7. Specifically, Clinton said the exports were not
detrimental to the U.S. space launch industry. Further, he said the
material and equipment "will not measurably improve the missile or
space launch capabilities" of China. See

*** Iraq raises gas prices 33%

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - The Iraqi government has raised gasoline prices
by at least 33%, the second increase in less than two months. Oil
Ministry officials declined to say what prompted the latest hike,
which went into effect Sunday. Filling up a car with high quality
gasoline will now cost up to $1.25, half a government employee's
average monthly salary of $2.50. The new rates, although considerable
by Iraqi standards, are still low when compared with prices of
essential commodities in the country. An egg in Baghdad costs 7 cents
and a liter of bottled water, 75 cents. Many people survive by holding
second jobs, getting money from relatives overseas and receiving
subsidized food. See

*** Russia set for impeachment debate

MOSCOW (AP) - Russian President Boris Yeltsin's foes in parliament
reiterated their intention Monday to support an impeachment vote
expected this week, while rumors swirled about a possible government
shakeup. The leaders of Russia's Communist Party, which has led the
bid to impeach Yeltsin, met Monday to discuss tactics for the
impeachment debate scheduled to begin Thursday in the lower house of
parliament, the State Duma. Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov insisted
that the debate, which has been postponed before, would be held as
scheduled. He expressed confidence that the motion would succeed,
Russian news reports said. See

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) - Claiming NATO is committing "genocide"
against Yugoslav civilians, Belgrade opened a legal offensive against
the alliance Monday and asked the World Court to stop NATO airstrikes.
Yugoslavia is suing 10 NATO members involved in the airstrikes and is
asking the United Nations' highest judicial body to rule that the
alliance is violating international law by using force against another
nation. NATO is responsible for "merciless and savage bombing of the
civilian population," Yugoslav representative Rodoljub Etinski said,

The Boy Scouts of America (see link #5 below) has settled a
long-standing dispute with the Unitarian-Universalist Church.
Under the agreement, the Unitarians will delete language in a
handbook that accompanies the Religion in Life award. It referred to
what the church calls "homophobic and discriminatory attitudes" of
Scout leaders, and questioned the organization's concept of God and
what constitutes belief in God, news reports said. The church said it
will detail its concerns to Scouts in separate pamphlets given out
with the handbook. ...The Boy Scouts last year ordered the
denomination to stop conferring Religion in Life awards to Scouts who
are among its members. The Boy Scouts teaches that an avowed
homosexual is not a good role model for "traditional family values,"
Gregg Shields, a Boy Scouts spokesman, said. The denomination said it
plans to seek a seat on the Boy Scouts' religious relationships
committee.

Volume 4 Issue 15
(http://www.millenngroup.com)

Commentary by Wayne Moody

Over the last five days, since the large full-halo coronal mass
ejection on the Sun at about 6:00 AM Universal Time on May 3rd, there
has been a buildup of protons and release of energy at the Earth,
taking various forms. Before that, there had been a 24-hour regular
cycle of pulsing energy that was resulting in geomagnetic storm
warnings and storms since April 28th, probably related to a huge
proton buildup that began abruptly on April 24th from another large
M-class coronal mass ejection from the Sun in the morning of April
22nd. This latest cycle that began on May 3rd (May 2nd local time in
many places) appears to have been more physically destructive than the
one that began on April 22nd. It began with a freak hailstorm in
Bangladesh, where there has been drought for weeks. The Oklahoma
hurricanes, while expected by the Weather Service, turned out to be
much more destructive than anticipated. Tennessee got hit hard by the
same storm system that swept across Oklahoma. There were avalanches
(signals of earth vibration) in Idaho and France, burying skiers. A
sudden, unexpected freeze hit Moscow. Over the past several days,
earthquake activity has been of the "swarm" type, starting in Japan
and working their way to the Alaskan Islands and the Coast of southern
Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Guatemala. Quake activity has been
at the highest levels since I have been tracking them, with 14 on the
6th and 15 on the 7th. While the quakes have not been particularly
destructive, they have unleashed incredible energy and the Oklahoma
hurricanes were the strongest ever recorded there.

Solar/Magnetic/Quake Update - 05.06.99 2230 UTC

Flare activity was low today with two C-Class events. Two new
regions were numbered. The SEC forecast is for continued low levels of
activity.

The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled with a brief period of
more active conditions. The electron event continued and the Proton
event ended as Proton levels dropped below event thresholds. The SEC
forecast is for quiet to unsettled magnetic field conditions.

Seismic activity seems to have responded to the increase in planetary
magnetism with a number of light to moderate level events in many
regions. A series of moderate tremors occurred near Kodiak Alaska.
Small tremors were noted in Oregon and Idaho. Moderate activity
occurred in various regions of the Pacific.

Solar/Magnetic/Quake Update - 05.07.99 2230 UTC

Flare activity increased dramatically today to moderate levels. An M3
event occurred from beyond the approaching limb, numerous C-Class
events occurred including moderate duration C7 and C3 flares. Eleven
spotted regions now exist on the visible solar disk and four new
regions were numbered. This may mark the beginning of a much more
active period in this solar cycle for flare and CME activity. C-Class
activity will continue and isolated M-Class activity is possible.

The geomagnetic field was mostly unsettled today with periods of
slightly active conditions noted. The Proton levels continued to
slowly decrease and electron levels have come down as well. The SEC
forecast is for mostly unsettled conditions through the period.

Seismic activity also increased dramatically today with two 6+ events
reported. The 6.3 in southern Iran killed dozens and caused heavy
damage. The 6.1 offshore from Kodiak Island in Alaska was no doubt
strongly felt but no damage reports have been received yet. The 5.2 in
northern Taiwan should have been widely felt and light to moderate
damage may have occurred. Two moderate to strong events were reported
in south central Africa. The 4.7 in Japan was widely felt including in
Tokyo. Here is the latest from USGS:

Mon May 10 , 1999 -- An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 7.0
struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea early Tuesday, the Hong Kong
Observatory said. The quake was centered near the island of New
Britain, about 400 miles northeast of Port Moresby in Papua New

Oregon: Possible magnitude 8 or 9 quake warned

Weekend News Today

Mon May 10 , 1999 -- Scientists have warned for years that a
magnitude 8 or 9 earthquake could strike about 30 miles off the Oregon
coast, causing huge tsunamis and tremendous damage. Now they say it
could hit much farther inland and cause severe damage to cities such
as Portland, Salem and Eugene. Geologic evidence suggests that such
quakes occur about every 400 years, plus or minus 200 years. The last
one, believed to be a magnitude 9, occurred 300 years ago, previous
studies showed. Chris Goldfinger, a marine geologist at Oregon State
University, and his colleagues presented their findings recently in
Seattle at the annual meeting of the Seismological Society of America.

Mexican Volcano Erupts, Prompting Evacuations

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's "Volcano of Fire" erupted
Monday, spraying its slopes with lava, setting off brush fires and
creating a giant mushroom-shaped cloud that led authorities to
evacuate 315 nearby residents.

The 14,319-foot-high volcano, also known as Colima Volcano, borders
Colima and Jalisco states about 285 miles west of Mexico city.

Mexico's Interior Ministry said in a press release the volcano sent
out tremors throughout Monday morning, when local officials began
evacuating people from six villages near the volcano.

By Monday afternoon the volcano let loose with an "intense
explosion" that was heard for "several tens of kilometers."

The mushroom-shaped cloud stretched about four miles high.

"Just as it did in a similar event on Feb. 10, the explosion launched
incandescent fragments for several kilometers without reaching any
populated areas," the press release said.

Authorities remain on red alert, the ministry said.

1. BARAK AND ARAB PARTIES SIGN SECRET AGREEMENT
Ehud Barak's One Israel party has signed an agreement of cooperation
with the Arab parties Hadash and Mada. The Arab parties will work for
the election of Barak, but the corresponding commitments of One Israel
- a conglomeration of Labor, Meimad, and David Levy's Gesher - were
not publicized and remain secret. Press photographers were not
allowed to record the signing ceremony.

2. COURT ORDERS DELAY IN ORIENT HOUSE CLOSURE
Supreme Court Justice Dalia Dorner issued a restraining order against
the closure of the Orient House offices at noon today. The order is
valid for one week, until after the coming elections. The decision by
Justice Dorner was greeted with singing and dancing by Jerusalem Arabs
outside the Orient House. Foreign consuls arrived during the
celebrations to meet with Feisal Husseini.

Following last night's refusal by Husseini to accept Israel's
last-minute compromise offer regarding the Orient House, the
government-ordered closure papers were served, and police and other
government bodies began their preparations to close the illegal
offices. These came to a grinding halt this morning when, as
threatened beforehand, nine Peace Bloc members submitted an appeal to
the Supreme Court to delay the closure until after the elections.
Justice Dorner accepted their claims that the closure might endanger
the public. The petitioners also claimed that the pre-election
decision "reeks" of electioneering. Foreign Minister Ariel Sharon
sharply criticized foreign consuls who had intended to be present at
the Orient House during a police closure of the building. Sharon
called on the opposition to condemn such foreign intervention as well.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said today, "My concern is not the the
elections - it is the Palestinians who attempted to take advantage of
the days before the elections for their own purposes... Can it be
imagined that in Paris or Washington, a group would be allowed to take
over a building in the capital in violation of the country's
sovereignty?!"

3. PLO STATES ITS NEW DEMANDS
An editorial posted on the official Fatah website
<http://www.fateh.org/e_editor/99/300499.htm> succinctly formulates
the "new" Palestinian position regarding its negotiations with Israel.
The editorial states clearly that the PLO's future demands will be
based on UN resolutions 181 (calling for partition and the placement
of Be'er Sheva and other Israeli areas in the Palestinian state) and
194 (calling for the return of the 1948 Arab refugees to within
Israel). The editorial states:
"Although the statement of the Central Council reflects Palestinian
willingness to continue the process of negotiating for peace, all
decisions have been made within revised terms of reference. It is on
the basis of these that progress can be made in two directions: first,
toward true Palestinian independence and the actualization of full
Palestinian sovereignty in the West Bank and Gaza; and second, toward
resolution of the remaining interim issues. UN Resolutions 181 and
194, which predate the Oslo Agreements, now form the frame of
reference within which all Palestinian parties will make future
decisions. Palestinians will now act on the basis of these and all UN
resolutions relating to the Palestinian issue." (With thanks to IMRA)

Nostradamus Fever Grips Japan

 By JOJI SAKURAI
 Associated Press Writer

TOKYO (AP) _ Every week, millions of Japanese TV viewers
tune in to watch a couple of men building a bunker for the end of the
world. It's a race against time. They have to finish before July.
As the end of the century nears, Japan has come under an
odd spell _ the apocalyptic preachings of the 16th century soothsayer
 Nostradamus.
Bookshelves are lined with Nostradamus spinoffs.
Celebrities comment earnestly on his predictions. The Internet is awash with
thousands of Japanese Web sites devoted to the French prophet of
 doom.
``Will mankind be extinguished in 1999?'' one typical Web
site says. ``This is not an issue to be taken lightly.''
Nostradamus, whose prophecies made him so famous in his
lifetime that he came under the patronage of Catherine de Medicis, has been a
household name in Japan for over two decades.
And he's always been big during times of crisis.
During the oil shock of the 1970s, a Japanese author penned
the best-selling book that first introduced Nostradamus' prophecies to a
mass audience in Japan. It sold more than 2 million copies.
Another wave of interest in Nostradamus broke out during
the 1991 Persian Gulf War, which spawned a cottage industry in World War
 III predictions.
But the current gloom of Japan's recession and jitters
about the international situation _ from the war in Kosovo to missile tests by
North Korea _ have created the most virulent Nostradamus boom yet,
 experts say.
``It's excessive,'' said Teigo Yoshida, a professor of
cultural anthropology at Japan's prestigious Tokyo University. ``In times of
social uncertainty, these theories gain popularity.''
As evidence of Nostradamus' popularity, two dozen books on
him or his predictions were published in Japan last year. Eleven more
have been released so far this year.
Timing, of course, has given Nostradamus a strong boost.
``There has been a big surge in the popularity of
Nostradamus with the last year of the millennium,'' said Fumiko Takahashi, a
spokeswoman for the Japan's Publishers Association.
Nostradamus predicted millennium doom, writing that ``the
great king of terror will fall from the sky in the seventh month of the
 year 1999.''
Nostradamus' prophecies, which were written in verse and
collected in a book called ``Centuries,'' are extremely cryptic and
open to a wide range of interpretations.
But that hasn't prevented Nostradamus buffs from making
 some very precise inferences.
In a book published in February, author Akio Cho even
purports to have discovered ``through scientific research'' the precise hour
and date of the great cataclysm: 5 p.m., July 24, 1999.
Few people are seriously preparing for the end _ to most
Japanese, the boom is more an entertaining distraction than
 anything else.
But a recent poll conducted by Japan's Kokugakuin
           University
found 20 percent of the people responding give some credence to the
 Nostradamus prophecies.
And the trend does have its hardcore believers, and a
darker side.
Many of the beliefs espoused by Japan's Aum Shinri Kyo
``Supreme Truth'' cult _ which killed 13 people in a 1995 subway gas attack _
appear to have been inspired by Nostradamus' writings.
The cult, which has been increasing in popularity lately
even though most of its leaders have been arrested, is preparing for an
Armageddon that it claims will come in early September.
Other religious cults in Japan have borrowed ideas from the
 Nostradamus prophecies to attract followers.
Yoshida, the anthropologist, said Japan is fertile ground
for Nostradamus because the occult has a powerful hold on many aspects of
 everyday Japanese life.
Fortune teller stands line the streets in busy shopping
districts, and the Chinese zodiac is used to set the dates for
 everything from weddings to elections.
``More and more Japanese are turning to superstition,'' he
said. ``People's anxieties are pushing them to search for answers in the
 supernatural.''

Tensions grow among EU ministers as G7 row drags on

BRUSSELS, May 10 (Reuters) - European Union finance ministers on
Monday conceded that a formula for representing the euro zone at
meetings of the Group of Seven (G7) industrialised nations may need to
be reworked in the face of continued opposition from the United States
and Canada.

In a bid to mask rising tensions between 'small' and 'large' EU
nations, ministers agreed that for now there would be no change to
their proposal for the chairman of meetings of euro zone finance
ministers and a Commission official to gain access to G7 talks.

Austrian Finance Minister Rudolf Edlinger said, however, there was
general unease among smaller nations at the reluctance of Germany,
France and Italy -- the euro zone's permanent G7 members -- to
consider addressing U.S. opposition to granting Europeans new seats at
the G7 table.

"The situation right now is not acceptable for smaller countries,"
Edlinger told reporters.

One idea discussed again on Monday was the exclusion of national
central bank governors from the French, German and Italian
delegations, given that both the U.S. and Europeans agree European
Central Bank President Wim Duisenberg should be present.

Smaller countries see this as an obvious way to make room for the
Euro-11 chairman, who from July will be Finnish Finance Minister Sauli
Niinisto.

French Finance Minister Dominique Strauss-Kahn hinted the current EU
position was not sustainable, telling reporters the bloc needed "a
negotiating mandate with clear priorities."

German Finance Minister Hans Eichel said, however, there would be no
change until after EU heads of state and government had held a
pre-planned summit in Cologne on June 3-4.

"We discussed this today and we will be resuming intensive discussions
with the United States and Canada," Eichel, who chaired Monday's
talks, told reporters. Germany currently holds both the EU and G7
presidencies.

"If no solution is possible, then in Cologne we will have to think
about a discussion between heads of state and government and (they)
will have to decide whether to hold to the position or change it,"
Eichel said.

Official Newspaper in Oman: Jews Bake Passover
Matzah With Christian Blood as Health Remedy
---------------------------------------------------

Following are excerpts from an April 19, 1999 article by Shouki Hafez
entitled "Matzahs of Blood" in the official Omani newspaper Al-Watan:

"There are those who prefer their matzahs with fruit juice or with
cocoa, and there are those who like them baked with the blood of human
beings, especially with Christian blood. Such are our cousins the
Jews, who inherited this strange pagan idea together with a large
amount of nonsense in the Talmud and their other "holy" books. The
"religious" factor behind all this is clear and explicit in the Torah
of the rabbis: eating Jewish matzahs baked with Christian blood is the
quickest way to revive one's health and guarantees to restore vigor to
the elderly when having relations with one's spouse_"
