Government

Some Christian schools are refusing to participate in Florida's new
voucher plan, the first statewide plan in the country, for fear of
losing control of doctrine. Ken Wackes, headmaster of Fort
Lauderdale's Westminster Academy, a private Christian school with an
enrollment of more than 1,200, says his school would no longer be
allowed to accept only students whose parents are born-again
Christians, nor could Bible class or chapel attendance be mandatory.
"A school must take applicants on a first-come, first-served basis,
with no screening allowed," he says (Christianity Today, 7/12/99).

The city government of Milwaukee has introduced a registry for
homosexual couples. It allows homosexual couples, but not heterosexual
ones, to obtain a certificate from city hall. Although the certificate
carries little legal weight, it is expected to help homosexuals get
visitation rights at hospitals and employee benefits for domestic
partners. Wisconsin's capital, Madison, instituted a similar registry
in 1990 (AFA Journal, 9/99).

A bookstore in Ukiah, California, was sued for claiming that the
Bible is the Word of God. It is the second Christian bookstore in
California to go to court over the issue. In December, Redwood Bible
House began receiving calls from Queenie Edwards demanding that they
stop advertising the Bible as God's Word. Edwards reportedly demanded
a check for $2,500 for "damage to her reputation." So far the courts
have ruled in favor of the bookstores (Sword of the Lord, 8/6/99).

Three Baptist churches in the Jacksonville area will no longer open
their doors to public polling after a group campaigned for the
legalization of marijuana on their property. After police asked them
to leave church property, Floridians for Medical Rights went to court
to protect their freedom to petition, and a federal judge ruled in
their favor (Baptists Today, 8/99).

Religion

Franklin Graham, who is preparing to take over the Billy Graham
Evangelistic Association, believes that his father's ecumenical
alliance with the Catholic Church and all other denominations "was one
of the smartest things [he] ever did," according to a report in the
Indianapolis Star (6/3/99). "In the early years, up in Boston, the
Catholic church got behind my father's crusade," Franklin told the
paper. "That was a first. It took back many Protestants. They didn't
know how to handle it. But it set the example. 'If Billy Graham is
willing to work with everybody, then maybe we should too' " (O
Timothy, vol. 16, #7).

A debate over God's omniscience has erupted in the Baptist General
Conference (BGC), an Illinois-based denomination with 140,000 members
in more than 800 churches. Greg Boyd, a theology professor at Bethel
College and Seminary, and the popular pastor of a 3,000-member church
in St. Paul, has written in his books that God's foreknowledge is
limited: "God can't foreknow the good or bad decisions of the people
He creates until He creates these people and they in turn create their
decisions." An inquiry panel of the BGC concluded that Boyd's views
are "within the bounds of evangelical Christian orthodoxy and
compatible with the theological commitments expected of faculty
members at Bethel." Concerned pastors drafted an amendment to the BGC
Affirmation of Faith, which stated about the Father, "We believe 'that
He foreknows infallibly all that shall come to pass.' " Boyd said he
would resign if the amendment passed. It failed, 270-251 (World,
7/17/99).

The Children's Society, a 118-year-old charity established by the
Church of England, has lifted its ban that forbade homosexual couples
from adopting children. The trustees, chaired by Bishop Jim Thompson
of Bath and Wells, wanted to bring their policy in line with recent
legal judgments and the practice of all other national voluntary
adoption agencies. The society pointed out that adoption is only a
small part of the society's work (Christian News, 8/9/99).

A devout Catholic has been chosen as the new head of a Southern
Baptist university in San Marcos, Nicaragua. Humberto Belli, who once
served seven years as Nicaragua's minister of education, will head the
Latin America branch of the University of Mobile (UM), Alabama.
Alabama Baptists established the branch campus in 1993--with Belli's
help. They are looking for a buyer. Domino's Pizza's founder Tom
Monaghan, who donated $1 million to keep the campus open through June
2000, wants to transform the campus into a Catholic institution. UM
President Mark Foley disputes rumors that the branch already has
become Catholic. He calls the two faiths' search for a group to take
over the Nicaragua campus "a unique opportunity for Southern Baptists
and Catholics to join their resources and their energies in finding
God's will and God's plan for Christ-centered education in Nicaragua."
Foley said Belli "is a Christian gentleman of the highest caliber"
(Christianity Today, 8/9/99).

Society

Young people age two to seventeen spend more than three hours a day
in front of a television screen, and nearly half of all young people
have a television set in their bedroom. Both statistics are all-time
highs, according to new studies. With the advent of video games and
home computer, the total number of hours in front of a screen is even
higher. Young people spend an average of 4 1/2 hours every day in
front of a screen of some kind, according to the Annenberg Public
Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania (Christian News,
8/9/99).

Gambling is the fastest-growing addiction in America, according to a
report in Family Voice (7-8/99). According to the recent report by the
National Gambling Impact Study Commission, about five million
pathological and problem gamblers live in America, and an additional
fifteen million risk developing this "addiction." The average Gamblers
Anonymous member has lost all his money and accumulates debts from
$35,000 to $92,000 before he seeks treatment. More than half of all
pathological gamblers will commit crimes--embezzlement, tax evasion,
fraud--to pay off debts.

Fathers are not necessary, according to a recent article in the
journal of the American Psychological Association, The American
Psychologist (6/99). In a piece called "Deconstructing the Essential
Father," Louise Silverstein and Carl Auerbach sum up their thesis: "We
do not believe that the data support the conclusion that fathers are
essential to child well-being and that heterosexual marriage is the
social context in which responsible fathering is most likely to
occur." The researchers made their case against fatherhood by studying
the behavior of a primate called the marmoset. Their conclusion
contradicts study after study (World, 8/21/99).

Rapture Watch

The Landscape of Hell

One day in the not to distant future, we believers in Jesus
Christ will be in Heaven witnessing one of the many truly
praiseworthy events recorded in the Bible. This event will take
place, during the final 7 years of this present age. It
will be during the start of the Day of the Lord, when God's
wrath is poured out. This is the time, when Jesus begins
to reign (Rev. 7:16 & 17 and Rev. 11:15). It will be in that
day that we will witness the Devil being thrown out of the
lower heavens on his one way descent to his final destination in
the lake of fire. The origin of the Devil's demise is
recorded in Isaiah Chapter 14 verses 12 through 14, when he once
made a challenge against God in the heaven of
heavens. Verse 15, then prophesied of the day that he will "be
brought down to Sheol (or Hell), to the lowest depths
of the pit."

Revelation Chapter 12 verses 7 through 12, prophesies of the
great day, when the Church will be witness along with
all the host of Heaven to the Devil being cast out of the lower
heavens and then temporarily confined upon the earth,
during the latter part of the 7 years referred to as "the Great
Tribulation." At the close of the 7 years, we will then
witness Satan being chained and locked up in the bottomless pit
of Hell just as was prophesied by Isaiah. It is this
very real place we want to consider in this message. After a
thousand years in the pit of Hell the Devil will find
himself in his final eternal residency, which has been prepared
for him and his angels - which is called in the
Scriptures Gehenna, the lake of fire and brimstone. Hell and
Hades (that is death), ( See Matthew Chapter 25 verse
41 and Revelation Chapter 20 verses 7 through 15), will then
join the damned in this place of eternal destruction.

As God has seen fit in these last days before the return of His
Son Jesus Christ, He has been continually revealing
the unwavering accuracy of His words, which are recorded in His
Holy Bible. The subject of a literal place called
Hell has been a long standing topic for ridicule and scorn.
Comedians, cartoons, books and movies have over the
years been mediums for mocking and lampooning the true horrors
revealed about this place by the eternal word of
God. Scriptures in the Bible give direct revelation that Hell'
s location is in the depths of the earth, which can be
verified in passages such as Chapter 32 verses 17 through 32
of the Old Testament Book of Ezekiel.

In Luke Chapter 16 verses 19 through 31, Jesus gave us an
unprecedented view of an historical incident, which
provided never before know details about the environment and
the landscape of this expanding place of infernal fire.
(Isaiah Chapter 5 verse 14). This is not just a fictitious
story or a parable Jesus spoke of a literal man who still
resides there to this day and even identified the Old Testament
patriarch Abraham as being nearby in an area of refuge,
which had been sanctified for the forgiven which Jesus called
paradise in Luke Chapter 23 verse 43. (Concerning
believers who pass on to their rest before Jesus returns to the
earth, we firmly believe their spirits are no longer
required to wait in paradise (which was emptied by Christ before
He went up to Heaven) but immediately go to
Heaven (Lk. 23:39-43, I Peter 3:18-20, John 20:17, II Cor. 5:1
and Rev. 6:9-11).

In Luke Chapter 16 verse 24, Jesus made it clear that Hell is a
place of unrelenting heat, which causes great torment
to the unforgiven and in verse 26, we are told that there are
distinct shores separated by great gulfs existing in this
accursed land. Quoting excepts from this passage, we read from
verses 22 through 26: "So it was that the beggar
died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The
rich man also died...And being in torments in
Hades...saw Abraham afar off...Then he cried `Father Abraham
have mercy...I am tormented in this flame', But
Abraham said, ...between us and you there is a great gulf fixed,
so that those who want to pass from here to you
cannot, nor can those from there pass to us."

In the past, those who studied the earth science known as
geophysics would have dismissed this biblical revelation
of flaming land masses separated by great fiery gulfs because of
previous teachings that the center of the earth
consisted of no more than a smooth ball of iron. Science has
now acquired a revision to its past understanding and
has become current with that which God told man so many
thousands of years ago.

Quoting from the September 4, 1988, article from the Denver
Post, which headlined, "Earth core X-rays solve
mysteries", we read the following: "While astronomers can see
the heavens through telescopes and biologists can
see inside cells with microscopes, geologists have been unable
to peer inside the earth. No longer. Over the past two
years, seismic tomography has been producing X-ray-like images
down to the core of the planet, picturing for the
first time objects deep beneath our feet. What scientists have
found has been a surprise: the supposedly smooth hot
ball of iron at the earth's core is not smooth, but has vast
mountain-range-sized bumps and valleys with
upside-down lakes of molten rock between them. Because they are
upside down in relation to the earth's surface,
the features on the surface of the earth's core have been dubbed
"anti-continent's" and "anti-oceans"..."We are
beginning to get ourselves into a position where we can see and
understand the whole machine inside the earth..."
said Adam Dziewonski, a Harvard University geophysicist."

In the study of entomology, a unique and deadly imposter is
found in the world of the firefly. This imposter is able
to lure unsuspecting males to their death by sending out its own
mimic of the luminescent flashing code, which
signals that a female desires a mate. If the male firefly takes
the time to examine and authenticate whether the signal
is coming from the genuine article or not instead of blindly
rushing to the call its tragic end could be avoided and the
imposter would be deprived of its prey.

Jesus warned in Luke Chapter 21 verse 8, that in these last days
many impersonators would come claiming to be the
Christ while II Peter Chapter 2 warns us of false teachers and
prophets. Keep your faith in the genuine article only,
Jesus Christ the Son of God, who died on the cross for the sins
of the world and then rose from the dead and is
coming again soon from Heaven with all His great power and
glory.

One of the earliest prophecies recorded in the Bible is found in
Genesis Chapter 3 verse 15, where God promised a
Deliverer the Saviour of mankind, which would bring Satan to
full accounting. Hell was originally just prepared for
the Devil and his angels. All of fallen mankind, who have now
become part of Satan's family are destined to share
in this punishment. (John Chapter 8 verses 21 through 24 and
verses 41 through 47). Jesus defeated Satan at the
cross and know whosoever trusts in the Risen Lord Jesus Christ
is not only free from the satanic relationship but
also from Satan's final abode in hellfire.

Heaven and Hell are real places and God's word prophesies that
except for the false prophet and the Anti-Christ
every person that ever lived will at the end of their earthly
lives find themselves in one of these two places (Rev.
19:20). From there, those who rejected the free offer of
forgiveness by the atoning blood of Jesus Christ will find
their destinies sealed in the lake of fire. God makes it a free
choice. For those who are humble and recognize their
sinful condition God offers forgiveness and the power to live an
eternally changed life; for the proud and defiant, the
certainty of the wrath and everlasting judgement of God. The
absolute assurance of total forgiveness for ones sins is
guaranteed to every believer in Jesus Christ.

Jesus suffered, shed His blood, and died to redeem mankind from
this horrible, horrible fate. What greater price
could be paid than for God to have sacrificed His own beloved
Son? The very first prophecy, that we know of which
was uttered by a man is recorded in Jude verse 14 by the Gentile
prophet Enoch. There, we read that Enoch
prophesied of the return of Jesus Christ with His saints. The
very last prophecy in the Bible was given to the Hebrew
Apostle John by Jesus Christ Himself in Revelation Chapter 22
verse 20. And Jesus said: "Surely I come quickly..."
The message of the Bible to Gentile and Jew alike is, Jesus came
to set men free and that He is coming again soon.
(John Chapter 8 verses 31 through 36).

For those who feel offended or angry, with those who warn of the
judgement of Hell, it should be remembered that
the rich man in Hell pleaded with Abraham to send someone to
warn his family of this terrible place. We respond to
this plea not only for those in Hell who have loved ones on
earth but mainly because our Lord's love for those who
are about to perish is so much greater.

Your Brother and friend in Christ,
Jamma
