U.S. Enemy #1: Isolationism
Dateline: December 8, 2000

George W. Bush's appearance on 60 Minutes II the other night
generated headlines because it was his first major interview since
election day. But news reports failed to focus on the foreign policy
comments Bush made during the program.

The interview was conducted just hours after Bush received his very
first national security briefing. CBS Correspondent Scott Pelley
asked Bush, "What is the principal threat facing the security of the
United States?" Bush responded, "The principal threat facing America
is isolationism."

Bush, who again mentioned Colin Powell as a likely Secretary of State
nominee, went on to say, "We have great opportunities to help make
the world more peaceful, but we can't do so if we become
isolationists."

The Governor of Texas touched on many familiar themes during the
exchange on international affairs. He spoke of rising terrorism and
the need for a strong military. Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein
are the only two world figures he mentioned by name...and they were
not positive references.

He also reinforced the importance of promoting free trade around the
world and stopping the spread of nuclear arms. He also said, "And my
priorities will be our own neighborhood and Europe and the Far East
and of course the Middle East."

At times it was hard to figure out what he was saying. In one
confusing passage he said, "But the-world-America can't go it alone,
and there's-I think it's important to understand the difference about
being-being a nation that's humble, willing to build alliances-and
set priorities, a priority of ours has got to be-be-free trading
world."

An Israeli female schoolteacher was shot dead this morning in a
terrorist attack on the eastern outskirts of Hebron. The victim, Rina
Didovski, is being buried this afternoon in the Jewish community of
Beit Hagai, south of Hebron. Two male teachers traveling in a mini-van
with her were wounded, one of them critically. The critical victim,
who was driving the vehicle, is being operated on at Jerusalem's
Hadassah hospital. The Israeli civilians were reportedly on their way
to the Jewish community of Kiryat Arba when Palestinian gunmen opened
fire on their vehicle. The attackers escaped into the nearby
Palestinian-controlled portion of Hebron.

Three other Israelis were wounded, one critically, in a similar
shooting attack last evening near Nablus. Doctors are still fighting
to save the life of a 20 year-old soldier who was struck by bullets in
the neck and chest. A 23 year-old woman traveling with the two
off-duty soldiers was also hit in the chest and is in moderate
condition in a Tel Aviv area hospital. The three, from the coastal
town of Gadera, were returning home after visiting the brother of one
of the victims. A Palestinian car passed by their vehicle just after
dark and opened fire. The attackers then fled into the nearby Arab
village of Burka. Soldiers sealed off the village so that the
assailants could not escape.

The two terrorist attacks came as the Israeli government was preparing
to relax travel restrictions placed around many Palestinian towns and
villages. It is not clear if the twin shootings will alter those
plans. In another violent incident earlier yesterday, a Palestinian
worker slashed the throat of an Israeli businessman in the Erez
industrial zone in the Gaza Strip. The 50 year-old businessman is in
serious condition at a hospital in Ashkelon. Another Jewish worker was
wounded when he attempted to overpower the 26 year-old Arab assailant,
who was shot dead during the scuffle. Meanwhile exchanges of fire took
place in three Gaza Strip locations overnight. Shots were also fired
again at the Psagot community north of Jerusalem, and at army bases
near Ramallah and Nablus. Security forces wounded two Palestinians who
tried to flee after being discovered planting a roadside bomb on the
Jericho bypass road, built after the area was handed over to Yasser
Arafat's control in 1994.

Jerusalem police and army forces are on high alert as Palestinians
gather once again on the Temple Mount for Friday prayers. Responding
to a police request, the Barak government decided not to allow Muslims
from the disputed territories into the city for the special Ramadan
service. However, local Palestinians of all ages, along with all
Muslim citizens of Israel, are being allowed up to the sensitive holy
site where the violent Palestinian uprising began 10 weeks ago.
Security forces will remain on heightened alert over the weekend as
Palestinians mark the anniversary of the start of the first
Palestinian uprising on December 8, 1987.

In related news, Arab leaders in Nazareth and other places have
decided to cancel all Christmas and Ramadan celebrations to support
the uprising and to commemorate the deaths of 13 Arab citizens of
Israel in the early weeks of the violence. They asked Israel's over
100,000 Christians (mostly members of the Greek Orthodox church) to
refrain from putting up lights or other seasonal decorations, and for
the nearly one million Israeli Muslims to hold subdued celebrations of
the Id al Fitr feast the marks the end of Ramadan.

An Arab man accused of secretly working with Israeli security agents
was sentenced to death on Thursday by a Palestinian court. The man,
Allan Odeh, was found guilty of helping Israeli agents plant a small
bomb in a car headrest that reportedly killed his cousin-a Hamas
official-on November 23. The read-out verdict said the court had
"decided to hang the criminal until death." His Arab attorney said the
court refused to allow him to adequately defend his client, saying the
Palestinian Authority was "a third world dictatorship with a
third-world justice system." He also called upon Israel to intervene
in the case, but Israeli officials say the sentenced man was not
working for Israeli intelligence.

Interior Minister Haim Ramon launched a fierce verbal attack on his
boss yesterday, charging that PM Ehud Barak "does not know how to run
this coalition, and will not know how to lead another coalition
either." He predicted that former Likud leader Binyamin Netanyahu will
emerge victorious in elections expected sometime in the first half of
next year "due to Barak's incompetence." Other Labor party politicians
blasted Ramon for giving the Likud "excellent fodder" to attack the
government during the upcoming election campaign. Meanwhile today's
Ma'ariv newspaper features an opinion poll revealing that the
opposition Likud party would pick up 15 Knesset seats if elections
were held today-giving them a total of 34-while the ruling Labor party
would drop from 26 to 20.

Vice President Al Gore has become a regular at Mount Vernon
Baptist Church in Arlington, Va., since the month-long struggle
to win the Florida counting began. The church is where the vice
president and his wife, Tipper, were baptized 20 years ago, and
their son Al was baptized nine years ago, according to The
Washington Times (see link #2 below).
..."It seems like when he's in crisis, he turns to us," Martha
Phillips, the pastor, told The Associated Press (see link #3
below). She said Gore last regularly attended services during the
uproar over the Monica Lewinsky scandal. The New York Times reported
in October that Gore "clearly suggested that he goes to church
regularly, even in the heat of the presidential campaign," but that he
"has not been active in church for a decade." ...It is "very unfair"
to suggest that Gore attends church only in times of crisis, James M.
Dunn, a Wake Forest University professor who has preached at Mount
Vernon Baptist Church, told the Times. The vice president has had
several upheavals in his life over the last two years that kept him
traveling and away from the Arlington church, Dunn said. This includes
his father's death, his mother's illness, the marriage of a daughter,
and the birth of his first grandchild. Gore is "profoundly spiritual,
but not superficially religious," he told the Times.

Katherine Harris told her pastor that the prayers of hundreds of
thousands of Christians are sustaining her. The Florida secretary of
state, who has played a central role in the presidential election
controversy, attends Sunday and Wednesday services at Calvary Chapel
in Tallahassee, according to World (see link #4 below) magazine.
...Some media pundits and supporters of Democrat Al Gore have strongly
criticized Harris, a Republican, for strictly adhering to deadlines
governing the certification of election results in Florida. They
contend she acted in a partisan manner by refusing to accept the
results of a hand count in Palm Beach County that would have helped
elect Gore. ...Harris is a "quiet, unassuming, non-grandstander," her
pastor Kent Nottingham said. "We are covering her in prayer." Harris
told Nottingham she has received 400,000 email messages from people
saying they are praying for her, according to World. She said she
"felt the presence of the Lord as a result, and didn't feel stressed
or strained at all," according to Nottingham. ...Harris attended
L'Abri International Fellowship after graduating from college about 20
years ago, World reported. L'Abri was founded in 1955 by Reformed
theologian Francis Schaeffer.

Professor to wire computer chip into his nervous system

http://www.cnn.com/2000/TECH/computing/12/07/robot.man/index.html

Professor Kevin Warwick, surrounded by his robots, holds up a computer chip he
plans to have implanted in his nervous system

December 7, 2000
Web posted at: 12:55 PM EST (1755 GMT)

READING, England (CNN) -- This summer, a professor plans to take a step closer
to becoming a cyborg -- part human, part computer -- by implanting a silicon
chip that communicates with his brain.

Kevin Warwick heads the Cybernetics Department at the University of Reading in
the United Kingdom and views himself as a futurist. As robots become free
thinkers, the only way humans can compete is to use computers to enhance the
human brain, Warwick said.

Surgeons will connect the chip to his nervous system through nerve fibers in
his left arm, and the chip will exchange signals between his brain and a
computer.

"We simply don't know what my brain will do," Warwick said.

What he hopes is that it will respond the same way robots that are programmed
to use sonar instead of sight react when detecting objects. The experiment
will determine whether the computer can send those same sonar abilities to a
human brain.

The main part of the silicon chip consists of a battery, radio transmitter,
receiver and processing unit. Pins connected to the chip will pierce the
membrane surrounding Warwick's nerve fibers.

Once the chip is activated, scientists will experiment with signals associated
with motion and pain. When Warwick moves a body part, the signal will be sent
to the computer. It is hoped that the computer will record and successfully
replicate the movement by sending a signal back to Warwick.

These small robots use sonar to find their way around, and Warwick hopes to
send similar signals to his brain via the chip

Some scientists feel that because Warwick is experimenting on himself, the
results will be difficult to analyze. But others view it as a benefit to
science.

"What he's done has not been attempted before," said Dr. Philip Kennedy,
founder of Neural Systems Inc. "I'm sure if it's successful and safe on
himself, he will expand out to other subjects. I'm sure he'll do that."

Warwick made headlines in August 1998 when surgeons implanted a 23-by-3 mm
silicon chip transponder into his arm for nine days. The chip sent and
received signals, but was not connected to his nervous system.

During the original Project Cyborg, the chip sent signals to receivers
throughout a building and then to a computer. The computer could then track
his movement and respond by saying "hello" and opening doors.

So will Warwick's brain freak out during Project Cyborg 2.0? Will the computer
take over?

Not likely, said Kennedy, who has experience with chip implants to help the
disabled communicate.

"His brain should be able to adapt to the incoming stimuli, recognize them and
respond appropriately," Kennedy said.

"(Computers) have huge memory banks," he continued. "We have intuition and
insight the computers don't have. And we have the ability to respond or not to
respond.

If the experiment is successful, Warwick's wife Irena will also receive a
silicon chip implant to explore how movement, thought and emotion can be
transmitted from one person to another. Questions abound as to how this will
affect the couple.

"In linking two people together thus, will it be possible for Irena to
literally get into her husband's mind?" queries Warwick's Web site.

"With Kevin in New York and Irena in the U.K., if he sprained an ankle, could
he send the signal to Irena to make her feel as though she had injured
herself? Could she feel the same pain as Kevin?"

Perhaps only a cyborg has the answers.

Labor Party Considers Amending Platform To Permit Division of Jerusalem

Aaron Lerner Date: 8 December, 2000

Israel Radio political correspondent Yoram Dekel reported on the noon
new program today that a Labor Party meeting held today to discuss
the revision of the party platform is now considering a proposal to
change the section of the platform dealing with Jerusalem.

The current platform states that the party is committed to the unity
of Jerusalem. The proposed revision, that is geared to coincide with
Prime Minister Barak's proposals at Camp David, would state that the
party is committed to a unified extensive Jewish Jerusalem.

Dekel explained that new wording would allow for Arab neighborhoods
within Jerusalem - including the Old City - to become part of a
Palestinian state.

YESHA COUNCIL DEMANDS: NO PRIVATE PALESTINIAN CARS ON
YESHA ROADS

The Yesha Council demands that the Barak government immediately prohibit
Palestinians from traveling the roads of Yesha in private vehicles. They m ust
be allowed to travel only in IDF-escorted public transportation convoys.
Council spokesman Yehoshua Mor-Yosef said, "The Palestinians are using
the roads, our life lines, to cut down life. If the government doesn't iss ue this
order, we will respond in kind." Beit El Mayor Uri Ariel presented the
demand to Deputy Chief of Staff Maj.-Gen. Moshe Ya'alon this morning.
Likud Knesset faction head MK Ruby Rivlin supports the Council's demand.

Prime Minister Ehud Barak said that today's attack against civilians testif ies
to the cowardliness of the terrorists, and that they would not succeed in
shaking Israel's resolve. He promised that the murderers would not remain
free. The Yesha Council said today that the Prime Minister's decision to
remove the closure from the Palestinian cities in Yesha, despite dozens of
shooting attacks on Yesha roads, "borders on wanton abandonment of life."

Binyamin Regional Council head Pinchas Wallerstein earlier this week
termed Peace Now's call for the evacuation of Jewish communities in Judea
and Samaria "treasonous." He said, "Whomever believes that they can
make such declarations while at the same time Israelis are being shot at,
must be considered a collaborator with the enemy=85 Peace Now knows very
well that their [calls] will only encourage their friends in Fatah-Tanzim t o kill
us, and [its] hands will not be able to be cleansed [of this blood]." Left- wing
demonstrators protested against the Yesha settlements not far from the
Prime Minister's home today, as the funeral of Rina Didovsky passed by; at
least one would-be participant in the funeral assaulted the demonstrators i n
anger at their lack of sensitivity (he was arrested and released shortly
afterwards).

Jewish residents are blocking roads to Palestinian traffic in the Har Hevro n
area, in protest of the upsurge in terrorist attacks, as well as along the
Jerusalem-Ofrah highway. Near the Ben Shemen-Gimzo area, within pre-
1967 Israel, a protest was held this morning against the government's polic y
of restraint vis-a-vis the Palestinian terrorism. Elsewhere within pre-196 7
Israel, near Nachal Iron (Wadi Ara, between Hadera and Afula), rocks were
hurled at Israeli vehicles today; no one was hurt.

The condition of two other Israelis wounded in terrorist attacks yesterday
continues to be critical. One of them was shot near the Palestinian villag e of
Burka, not far from Shavei Shomron; two other Israelis were also wounded.
The names of the three: Avishai Gam-Zu L'tovah, Yossi Cohen, and Rachel
Helmus-Mogah. Later in the day, a Palestinian stabbed an Israeli in the
neck, seriously wounding him; a passerby attempted to separate between
them, but the terrorist was able to stab and lightly wound him, too; the
injured passerby shot and killed the terrorist.

JERUSALEM ARABS ATTACK FOLLOWING PRAYERS

Some 125,000 Moslems prayed on the Temple Mount today - only
Jerusalem Moslems were allowed to attend - but violence began towards the
end of the prayers. Mobs of Arabs took over parts of the Mount, sections o f
Via Dolorosa, and areas near Damascus Gate, from where they set fire to
the police station at Lions Gate and threw rocks at Israeli policemen. The
police attempted to disperse the mobs with rubber bullets; 21 policemen
were wounded by rocks, 5-10 Palestinians were hurt, and three journalists
were also injured - two by rocks, and one by rubber bullets. As we went to
press, the police were poised, ready to launch their counter-offensive to
regain the areas taken over by the Palestinians.

In other violence today, shots were fired at an IDF force in Hevron... An
IDF soldier was injured by rocks near Shechem... Palestinian Arabs threw
rocks at a Border Guard force along the Ma'aleh Adumim highway... IDF
forces shot live fire at Palestinians who came near Rachel's Tomb and
attacked them with blocks... An Israeli woman was injured on Emek Refaim
St. in western Jerusalem by rocks thrown at her...

The Israeli security forces arrested two officers of the Palestinian para-
military police force, on suspicion of organizing shooting attacks on Yesha
roads.

STUDY: 75% OF KEVORKIAN "PATIENTS" WERE NOT TERMINALLY ILL

BOSTON, Massachusetts, DEC. 7, 2000 (ZENIT.org).-

An analysis of 69 assisted suicides supervised by Jack Kevorkian has
concluded that 75% of his patients were not terminally ill when he helped
them to die, and that autopsies could not confirm any physical disease in
five of the cases, Reuters reported.

The study's findings were reported in a letter to the New England
Journal of Medicine and were made available Wednesday. The journal,
published today, said a team led by Lori A. Roscoe of the University of
South Florida at Tampa looked at the characteristics of people who died
with Kevorkian's assistance in Oakland County, Michigan, between 1990
and 1998.

Kevorkian, who helped more than 100 people commit suicide, is serving a
prison sentence of 10 to 25 years in Michigan. He was convicted of
second-degree murder in April 1999 in a trial that followed an appearance
on national television in which he administered a lethal injection to
Thomas Youk, a 52-year-old man suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease,
and dared the criminal justice system to stop him.

The study's findings seemed to suggest divorcees or people who had
never married were more likely to turn to assisted suicide in the absence
of safeguards. Roscoe and her colleagues said "persons who were divorced
or had never married were overrepresented among those who died with
Kevorkian's help, suggesting the need for a better understanding of
the familial and psychosocial context of decision making at the end of
life."

Kevorkian's attorney, Mayer Morganroth, dismissed the study. "All
theyre doing is repeating allegations made by the pro-life people,"
he told Reuters. "Theyre not really of any real substance, and
they're not really accurate or true." ZE00120723

Bridges for Peace Solidarity Mission (December 3-7, 2000) Resolution

(Adopted by 100 delegates in Jerusalem, representing 50 million Christians
and Jews in 73 nations.)

We the participants in the Bridges for Peace Solidarity Mission 2000 hereby
declare our unwavering support for the nation and people of Israel. As the
violence continues and the wheels of the peace process have ground to a
halt, we recognize that the very existence of the nation of Israel is being
threatened.

We therefore affirm and call upon our political leaders and the
international community to act upon the following resolutions immediately:

We condemn the recent attacks against Jewish holy places and the
desecration and destruction of Holy sites revered by both Jews and
Christians. Even as Hebron, Rachel's Tomb and the Tomb of Joseph were
victim to recent Palestinian violence, the Palestinian Authority continues
to demand sovereignty over more and more such holy sites in Jerusalem,
Samaria, and Judea, including the Temple Mount. The historical record and
recent events indicate undeniably that the protection of such sites
throughout Israel and freedom of access to them are only guaranteed when
Israel exercises complete sovereignty.

We call upon the United States government to lift the State Department's
unfair and unnecessary advisory against travel to Israel.

We condemn the Palestinian intentional use of children as rock-throwing
instigators and human shields for armed Palestinian militiamen who shoot
from behind them in battles with Israeli military forces. In any other
nation or conflict, such child abuse would be met with the loudest of
outcries from the global community. In addition to the violation of
international law and the rights of these children, this reprehensible
practice has been used to generate film footage provided to sympathetic
journalists who then use it to manipulate international public opinion. The
death of innocent children cannot be overlooked.

We condemn the recent and ongoing Palestinian attacks on Jewish communities
in Judea, Samaria and Gaza (sometimes known as settlements). We affirm the
right of Israelis to build and dwell in communities in the Biblical
Heartland of Israel in keeping with the rights of citizens of free nations
everywhere to live in areas of their own choosing and we call upon our
governments to recognize their right to do so.

We condemn the Western news media's use of misinformation which continually
and falsely paints Israel as the aggressor and accuses the Israeli military
of undue force in protecting itself and Israeli
citizens while failing to report the constant aggression and atrocities
frequently committed by Palestinian forces.

We condemn the violence, terror tactics and persecution perpetrated against
Arab Christians in areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority. We extend
our sympathy and support to these Christian
brothers and sisters who are in extreme danger, and we petition our
governments for immediate and full disclosure regarding these
well-documented situations. We condemn the use of harsh rhetoric,
misinformation and historical revisionism by the Palestinian Authority as
tools of incitement to violence against Jews, Christian Arabs and other
voices of moderation or tolerance. We call upon the PA leadership to
re-enter the path to peace by educating the Palestinian people truthfully
and fairly.

We affirm complete Israeli sovereignty over a united Jerusalem as the
capital of the Jewish state and call upon our governments to indicate its
support by an immediate relocation of our embassies from Tel Aviv to
Jerusalem.

As concerned Jews and Christians, we resolve to use the information and
resources we have gleaned through the Bridges for Peace Solidarity Mission
2000 to educate our communities and elected officials regarding the
complexities of the current situation and the urgent need to support
Israel, the Jewish people and persecuted Christians under attack by the
enemies of peace; we further resolve to continually and fervently pray for
the peace of Jerusalem.

Ha'aretz: Arafat broke deal with Sneh - did not reciprocate for easing of
closure etc.

Uzi Benziman Ha'aretz 8 December 20000

[Excerpt]

Two weeks ago, Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh held a late-night
meeting in Hula with two of Arafat's aides - Tayib Abdel-Rahim and Jamil
Tarifi. Sneh's goal was to try to bring about a decrease in the violence in
the territories, and Ehud Barak gave him his blessing.

The encounter was not an easy one: Each side vented its indignation on the
other and described the factors behind the escalation of the confrontation
from his own point of view. Once they'd finished letting off steam, those
present began searching for a way out of the impasse. The Palestinians
mentioned all the hardships they were suffering and spelled out the relief
measures that Israel should take in order to calm tempers on the ground.

Sneh pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket and drew on it a timeline
with a string of dates attached. Next to each date, he wrote down one of the
requested actions: removal of the internal closure, permission for
construction materials to enter the Gaza Strip, transfer of funds to the
Palestinian Authority, provision of food and medicine, permission for
shipments from Jordan and Egypt to enter the Gaza Strip and West Bank,
supply of fuel to the Gaza Strip, renewal of operations at the Dahaniya
airport, a lessening of strictures on people praying at the Temple Mount,
and a decrease in the Israel Defense Forces presence at "friction points."

Arafat's part in the equation came down to one thing: issuing a cease-fire
order.

Most of the steps written down at the meeting were carried out. According to
Sneh, Arafat did actually give a cease-fire order that very night.
Abdel-Rahim and Tarifi explained to the deputy defense minister that it
would take five days before the order's effect would be noticeable.

Now, two weeks later, with Arafat having traded in his pistol for a
submachine gun, Israel looks (at least in the eyes of the opposition) like
it fell headlong into a trap: The violent clashes have not significantly
abated while, at the same time, the pressure on the Palestinians that was
intended to propel them to quell the fighting has been eased. According to
Barak's statements, one aspect of Israel's policy in response to the
Palestinians' lethal aggression has consisted of "unseen actions" such as
economic pressure. In the IDF's assessment, the economic siege was an
important component in the repertoire of means used by Israel to convince
the Palestinians to lay down their weapons.

When those in Barak's circle are asked why the use of pressure has been
abandoned, they respond that the government is making a distinction between
the Palestinian people and its leadership. Its efforts are directed at
impelling the leadership to employ its authority and take control over the
rioters and the gangs doing the shooting, but it does not want to harm the
civilian population. And that this is why the prime minister ordered a
softening of such "environmental" measures.

The phony ring of such talk speaks for itself: It is further testimony to
Barak's "zipper" modus operandi - ceaselessly opening and closing various
trial-and-error approaches every other day. He displayed the same
scattershot and precipitous method when it came to the civil revolution, the
promised reform in public broadcasting, the political negotiations, and his
handling of the Intifada. It's obvious that the decision to relax the
civilian sanctions did not derive from humanitarian considerations, but from
a (quite belated) realization of the harm they were doing to Israel's image.

The Americans' public rebuke of Israel two days ago for the economic
punishment it is inflicting on the Palestinians is just a small taste of
what Israel would be hearing from the world if pictures of Palestinian
children who are starving or suffering from a shortage of medicine should
come to dominate the news.

Asked two days ago for his current assessment of the confrontation with the
Palestinians, Sneh knit his brow and said that Israel's policy is in need of
fundamental reexamination.

consisting of high doses of birth-control pills, are available
now by prescription. Pro-life advocates have decried the report.

D.A.R.E. IS A DUD-The nation's most popular drug education program is
an enormous failure. Police serve as role models and confidants, and
provide training to keep kids off drugs (11/20 Chr. News). Though
widely used in schools, DARE has failed to significantly reduce drug,
alcohol, or cigarette use and was recently called a fraud by a
large-city mayor. Recently (1/25 HT), a local former DARE officer was
accused of molesting seven youngsters he was supposed to be
counseling about not using drugs.

BRAZIL'S CATHOLICISM, SPIRITISM-Of Brazil's 170 million, 130 million
are Roman Catholics. Or, are they? Many will go to their Catholic Mass
on Saturday and their Spiritist meeting on Tuesday. Many have been
charismatics and when offered the gospel they will say yes, and will
just add that to the other things they already have (12/4 Chr. Today).
Brazil is considered the largest Roman Catholic country in the world,
but a Presbyterian pastor says, "Brazil is a Spiritist country, not a
Catholic country." There are over 14,000 Spiritist centers in Brazil.
Spiritist worship takes two forms: Lower Spiritism that came with
African slaves (voodoo, witchcraft, magic, etc.). The other is popular
with upper-class folks, and has a New Age kind of emphasis
(reincarnation, talking with dead). Catholicism seems compatible with
various other false-gospel, syncretistic religions (e.g., Santeria,
voodoo).

EBOLA VIRUS-The Ebola virus ranks among the most terrifying of the
deadly "emerging diseases," striking rapidly and with gruesome
symptoms (12/11 USN&WR). It can kill in just a few days. Victims
suffer flu-like symptoms. Their organs fail and blood won't clot. An
outbreak in Uganda has taken 91 lives, and some frantic ones in
desperation swallow bleach to stop the lethal disease (12/4 C. Today).
Churches suspended worship and Communion services for weeks. Healers
use ritual dance and charms to exorcise Ebola, which they think is a
curse.

GLORIA COPELAND SAYS WE DESERVE WEALTH Gloria (Mrs. Kenneth) Copeland
is known for her heretical Word-Faith theology. We quote from a review
of her new book (12/00 Charisma): "Tethered to the belief that God's
people deserve wealth, real estate and financial abundance, the author
asserts that if those are not manifest in our lives, we are not doing
the Word but reaping poor choices previously sown. Touching briefly on
the law of progressive increase, Copeland confirms that little by
little our obedience to God will prosper us financially, spiritually
and emotionally. It is this prosperity that moves us from simply
obtaining personal wealth to using that wealth to advance God's
ultimate plan." This is false teaching. We are sinners, undeserving of
even the least of His mercies.

TOBACCO VS. ALCOHOL HYPOCRISY-Alcohol is a major causative factor in
traffic accidents, homelessness, crimes, divorces, suicides, etc., Yet
our government goes after the tobacco industry bigtime but seemingly
gives the liquor industry a free pass. This is selective outrage, pure
hypocrisy! We do not defend the tobacco industry, though we feel safer
on the highway meeting a smoking driver than a drinking driver. And if
the government is going to penalize the tobacco industry for $145
billion (e.g.), and award this to longtime smokers whose health was
damaged, it should rather reward more deserving NON-smokers who have
for years been damaged through no fault of their own by second-hand
smoke!

EVOLUTION NOT NOW NOR EVER-Belief in evolution is a remarkable
phenomenon passionately defended by the scientific establishment,
despite the lack of any observable scientific evidence for
macroevolution (from one distinct kind of organism into another). The
lack of a case for evolution is clear from the fact that no one has
ever seen it happen, not now nor in the past. If it were a real
process, evolution should still be occurring, and there should be many
"transitional" forms that we could observe Evolution is not science at
all, but an arbitrary system built upon faith in universal naturalism.
[Excerpt, Henry Morris, 12/00 Acts & Facts]

HOMOSEXUALITY has become the cause du jour of those who seek to
undermine the family. Though homosexuals comprise only 2-3 percent of
the population, they exert incredible influence over the political
arena. Abetted by a pro-homosexual news and entertainment media, the
radical gay activists' assault on morality has reached a fever pitch.
Last spring, homosexuals achieved a form of "gay marriage"[civil
unions] in Vermont, and now push for recognition of same-sex unions in
the other 49 states. Congress is considering homosexual "hate crimes"
legislation that would set up special classes of victims based on
special behavior. Under such a law, some crimes committed against
heterosexuals would be punished less severely than the same crimes
against homosexuals=85. [Excerpt, Focus on the Family booklet]

MUSLIMS ENDANGER CHRISTIANS, PHILIPPINES The Philippines is Asia's
only nation with a "Christian" majority. About 80% of its 70 million
people are Roman Catholic; 7 to 10 % are Protestant. Muslims are 8%
and most live in Mindanao and Sulo Archipelago in the south (12/4
C.T.). Muslim groups have carried on a bitter and brutal insurgency
since the early 1970s but this mostly ceased in 1996. But some rebel
groups demand removal of all Christian missionaries in southern
Philippines.

'LEFT BEHIND' FILM LEFT OUT GOSPEL-Left Behind is the most expensive
Christian film ever made. It is based on a popular series of books by
Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins, and due for release to movie theaters
nationwide in February. Those who made the film desire that it be used
as an evangelistic tool to reach people for Christ. A pastor friend
has viewed the video, said some positive things about it, but has some
concerns. He says that in depicting worldwide post-Rapture chaos
(plane crashes, car accidents, etc.) the film greatly overestimates
the number of true believers in the world, and that one could get the
impression there are MANY on the road to life (Jesus says FEW are). He
says the movie emphasizes repeatedly that all infants and children
(even of unsaved parents) will be removed from the earth, but points
out that a one-year-old at the time of the rapture would be eight at
the time Christ returns to earth to rule and reign-plenty old to be
saved then or prior. He says some of the music is horrible-"Christian
rock" of the worst kind. But the most serious problem of all is that
the GOSPEL is sadly missing in this supposedly evangelistic tool. The
name of Christ is mentioned only three times (during about a
one-minute segment). There is no mention of the Cross, the empty tomb,
no emphasis on the sinfulness of man and no clear presentation of the
terms of salvation. Lastly, this pastor is concerned that the film
will bring thousands of professing Christians into secular movie
houses. Be warned, be wise, beware! [For an expanded elaboration and
entire review, send a SASE.]

METHODISTS BAIL OUT NCC-An emergency grant of $400,000 from the United
Methodist Church allows the ecumenical National Council of Churches to
keep its doors open. Before the Nov. 18 vote by a UMC agency, Phil
Young, the NCC's treasurer, had told reporters that if the Methodists
didn't advance the cash the NCC's next job would be planning a
shutdown, according to Presbyterian News Service (11/23 Religion
Today). That won't be necessary now. "My guess is that there will
still be anxiety and frustration in the coming six months," Young told
the PNS. "But by Jan. 30, 2001, most of the anxiety and uncertainty
will be behind us." He said the council has begun operating within its
budget, having just laid off 12 of its 64 employees. "It is the mess
of the prior management that we're trying to clean up." NCC head
Robert Edgar said the council is stabilizing. At this time last year,
it faced a debt of $5.9 million and had no systems in place to control
spending, he said. The liberal UMC is a major supporter of the
apostate NCC and its left-wing causes. God's people should "come
out" of it.

POPE FAILS AT EXORCISM TRY-Pope John Paul II spent 30 minutes in
conversation and prayer with a teenage girl who was "screaming
insults in a cavernous voice" during a general audience at the Vatican
(11/13 CT). The pope's intervention seemed to have only a temporary
effect on the teen, but Catholic theologians stressed that exorcism is
almost never easy or rapid. The Vatican plans to distribute a new
exorcism ritual manual telling priests to spend more time praying with
those possessed by evil spirits and tones down stronger language.

SBC TEXANS UPSET THAT SEMINARY PROFS HAVE TO SIGN NEW 'CREED'-Southern
Baptist "moderates" in Texas object to a revised confession requiring
seminary professors to sign that they agree with basic tenets of the
faith. But SBC Pres. James Merritt says "We have turned our
denomination away from theological liberalism=85" and, "It only stands
to reason that any professor teaching in a Baptist school should be
willing to fully support that Baptist denomination's confession of
faith." (12/4 CT) Texans are redirecting over $5 million away from SBC
seminaries.

SBC BATTLES NEO-ORTHODOXY-Southern Baptist conservatives last June
revised the sentence in their 1963 Baptist Faith & Message confession
that made Christ, not the Bible, the criterion by which the Bible is
interpreted. They say that what we know about Jesus is what the Bible
reveals, and that "All Scripture is a testimony to Christ, who is
Himself the focus of divine revelation." Moderates/liberals say that
an internal experience of Jesus, apart from Scripture is adequate to
judge even the biblical text itself. One of their (CBF) Council
members put it this way, "We see our authority in Christ; Southern
Baptists [conservatives] see their authority in the Bible." (12/00
Bapt. Banner) Some CBF moderates/liberals argue against the male-only
pastorate by noting that Jesus never addressed the issue. The
Cooperative Baptist Fellowship liberals use the same arguments of the
old neo-orthodox who believed the authority of the Word (Christ) is
absolute, but the authority of the Bible is not quite so absolute. To
them it is only a human witness to the revelation and never
infallible. It is only a subjective authority that may become the Word
of God by individual experience. Charles Ryrie said neo-orthodoxy is a
theological hoax. "It attempts to preserve the message of the Bible
while denying the facts of the Bible."

SEPARATION FROM COMPROMISING BRETHREN "I have preached God's truth, so
far as I know it, and I have not been ashamed of its peculiarities.
That I might not stultify my testimony I have cut myself clear of
those who err from the faith, and even from those who associate with
them. What more can I do to be honest with you?=85" (Spurgeon, 11/00
Plains Baptist Challenger)

NRB 2001-The National Religious Broadcasters' 58th Annual Convention &
Exposition is set for Dallas, Tex., Feb. 10-13. Speakers include:
James Robison (charismatic Pope praiser), Greg Laurie (PK speaker,
BGEA board member), Henry Blackaby (Experiencing God), Anne Graham
Lotz, Alan Dershowitz, and Ralph Neas (PAW). Campus Crusade sponsors a

Installation of Officers speaker. Exhibitors include
Catholic/charismatic and other ecumenical organizations.

HINDUS TRY TO STOP CONVERSIONS IN INDIA Hindu nationalists wants India
to become officially Hindu (12/4 Chr.Today). Some seek to expel
foreign missionaries.

NATIONAL DAY OF SHAME, NOV. 7-Here is the shame: It is ours, the
church. It is the failure to preach righteousness, and then
castigating those who are willing to. Righteousness has not
disappeared because of the evil. The blessing of God has not been
removed because of the wicked who rule. Sin rules, and wicked persons
are in charge because the Lord and His righteousness have ceased to be
the heart of our nation. The shame is in Neo-Liberalism, its liberal
doctrine, its hatred of doctrine, in the dumbing-down of sin and the
refusal to preach anything that sounds negative. This shame lies at
the feet of pseudo-evangelical leaders who, choosing popularity,
consorted with the president, giving him aid and comfort as a
fornicator. To add insult to injury, they dared scold the man of God
who publicly identified his sin as John the Baptist did. The shame is
ours because of our failure to evangelize, to be obedient to the Lord
and firmly resist the undermining of Bible authority.=85God only knows
if this nation will ever have another free election without wicked men
tampering. If we do have another free election, it will be because men
of God have decided to hate what God hates and love what God loves.

Cops Could Shoot Lasers
by Elisa Batista

2:00 a.m. Dec. 4, 2000 PST

The phasers used by the characters in Star Trek may soon become a real
way
to fight crime.

HSV Technologies of San Diego, a developer of weapons for police
officers and military personnel, just introduced a prototype of a
weapon that shoots laser beams to stop criminals in their tracks.

Known either as the "Anti-Personnel Beam Weapon" or "Non-Lethal
Tetanizing Beam Weapon," it releases two ultraviolet laser beams with a
wavelength of 193 to 248 nanometers that paralyzes the skeletal muscles of
people and animals up to 2 kilometers away.

The laser beams, which sends currents at 10 milliampere and are
effective within a few milliseconds after they charge, are strong
enough to penetrate clothing but too weak to damage the skin or to be
lethal, according to Eric Herr, vice president of HSV Technologies.

Herr says the device has yet to be tested on animals or people, but it is
a safer and more efficient way to stop criminals than handguns or "Taser"
guns -- which release physically painful darts that can only travel to 20
feet.

"They (law enforcement officials) haven't used our device yet, but
they may remember the Rodney King episode," Herr said. "He was struck
repeatedly with darts that didn't subdue him. Because the Taser causes
painful shots ... for some people that angers them. Our device produces no
shock at all, it just immobilizes the person in whatever position they may
be in."

Still, the device has its side effects. A suspect's eyes could become
irritated if the beams are concentrated on the face for a few minutes.

The device is hefty in both size and price tag. Herr expects initial
units to fetch $35,000. Law enforcement officials, and perhaps
criminals interested in torturing their victims, would probably opt
for cheaper handguns.

"There really isn't anything out there, other than a baton and pepper
spray, that can halt a dangerous suspect without doing him or anyone else
harm," Herr said. "There is a huge market for this because there are no
alternatives to shooting the person in many cases."

"It's a lot better to be simply frozen in position than shot full of
holes."

Pentagon opening center on Mideast, South Asia: four other world centers
already exist

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: Reuters

Thu Dec 7,2000 -- The U.S. Defense Department said on Thursday it will
open a strategic studies center in Washington next month for officials from
21 countries to promote peace in the Middle East and South Asia. The
combination government school and official think-tank will host several thr ee-
week sessions a year for military and civilian officials from the countries  to
encourage personal ties among them and bolster stability in their regions.

The center at the Pentagon's National Defense University will be similar to

Meteorologists matching weather with illnesses

Fri Dec 8,2000 -- With freak weather caused by climate changes becoming
more frequent, English officials are warning housebuilders and insurance
companies to prepare for future chaos caused by extreme conditions. But
another group of people should also think ahead: hospitals and surgeons. A
team of British experts is looking beyond flood damage to discover what
impact climatic conditions have on health. The group, set up by the
Meteorological Office, is attempting to develop the world=92s first health
forecasts. By analyzing data from the past 10 yrs. of emergency GP call-
outs and hospital admissions, it hopes to match patterns of illness with
specific weather conditions.

Dr. William Bird, an Oxfordshire GP, was recruited last year to work
alongside Meteorological Office statisticians and epidemiologists from Oxfo rd
University. The idea for the project was his. "I knew from my own surgery
that there was a link between weather and illness that could be identified, "
he says. "People had investigated weather-related deaths, but not illnesses .
The real significance is that we may be able to alert hospital managers and
GPs to a looming surge in demand based on the expected weather in their
region." Forecasts will be issued to hospitals and surgeries ten days befor e
weather conditions likely to stimulate illness are expected. "The variable in
temperature ranges seems to affect the numbers of cardiac and stroke
victims and those with respiratory problems the most," he says. "So if we d o
have the predicted warmer summers and wetter winters, that variable will
increase.

Fri Dec 8,2000 -- Up to 11 people died in storms that battered Western
Europe, bringing fresh floods and chaos to thousands of people. People died
in Spain and Portugal Thursday and Friday as strong winds toppled trees
and snapped power lines and swollen rivers burst their banks and swamped
roads. Three of the victims were workers for a Spanish state tourism
company who died when their jeep was blown off a mountain road. The storm
moved on to Britain where torrential rain and strong winds left 2 people de ad
and brought more misery to the thousands already devastated from severe
flooding last month. This comes after October's violent storms and severe
floods that lashed northern Europe, causing thousands to be evacuated from
their homes in low-lying areas, with at least seven dead.

Fri Dec 8,2000 -- A pre-dawn underwater earthquake with a preliminary
magnitude of 5.5 jolted Tokyo and nearby areas earlier in the week, but the re
were no reports of damage or injuries. The quake was centered about 25
miles under the seabed off the coast of Ibaraki state, about 69 miles

Fri Dec 8,2000 -- Yet a second winter season of deadly Arctic storms has
descended on Mongolia where more than 15,000 head of livestock in
Mongolia have been killed by early snowstorms. At least 10,000 families
have been forced to move to warmer areas. The new disaster follows a
summer of drought and locust invasions that were preceded by deadly winter
storms. At least three million head of livestock died in severe snowstorms
last year. The storms were the worst to hit the region in three decades. Mo re
than half of the country was affected by drought this summer, which left up  to
75 percent of the land too dry to grow feed for livestock. And the early sn ows
have also blocked many roads, slowing the distribution of food and aid. At
least one-third of Mongolia's population depends on its livestock for food,
heat and transportation.

3.9 quake in Southern Indiana sets off rumbles of concern

Fri Dec 8,2000 -- Consider this a warning. A minor earthquake centered near
Evansville shook the region Thursday morning. There were no immediate
reports of damage or injuries. The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of
3.9, hit at 8:08 a.m. at a depth of about three miles, the U.S. Geological
Survey said. A magnitude 4 earthquake can cause moderate damage. The
minor earthquake that shook the ground beneath Evansville on Thursday
caused no injuries or significant structural damage.

But seismologists said southwestern Indiana is in line for a larger, more
damaging quake. The problem, they said, is nobody knows when it might
hit."That there will be a large earthquake in southwestern Indiana is
absolute," said John Hill, associate director of the Indiana Geological Sur vey.
"I view this as a good heads-up that didn't do any damage." The Indiana
scientists say that quake doesn't mean a larger one is imminent. Still,
residents -- as they have in the past -- could feel the effects of a big qu ake
down south.

Fri Dec 8,2000 -- The California Independent System Operator (ISO) on
Thursday declared an unprecedented so-called stage three power emergency
but thanks to federal action managed to narrowly escape without having to
order rolling blackouts across the state. ``We believe we have averted
blackouts. The load is now falling,'' spokesman Patrick Dorinson said. The
ISO, which operates around 75 percent of the state's power grid, has never
before issued a stage three alert, which is ordered if operating reserves d rop
to such dangerously low levels that there is a threat the grid could totall y

Australia and residents were preparing for high winds and heavy rain. Sam
has been rated a Category 5 Cyclone, which is the top of the five-point sca le.
Its maximum sustained winds were at 125 mph, with gusts to 174 mph.

Sam would spread rain and wind over portions of Western Australia, as it
spins off the coast. Strong wind warnings were in effect from Kuri Bay to
Cape Leveque and storm warnings were posted from Cape Leveque to
Pardoo. The tropical weather season has just begun in Australia and
cyclones usually don=92t form until at least late December.

Irish and British security sources play down Clinton bomb report

Fri Dec 8,2000 -- Irish and British security sources played down a report o n
Friday that guerrillas opposed to Northern Ireland's peace process plan to
detonate a bomb in Britain during President Clinton's visit next week. The
Irish Examiner newspaper said the Real IRA had smuggled a bomb into
Britain at least as large as the 500lb device which killed 29 people in the
market town of Omagh in 1998. The Real IRA was blamed for that attack, the
worst atrocity of 30 years of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland.

"The Real IRA will do anything to scuttle the impact of his (Clinton's) vis it
and, with it, the peace process. The president's imminent arrival has given
them a deadline to meet," the report quoted a senior security source as
saying. But security sources in Ireland and Britain were skeptical that the
group had the resources for a bombing on that scale.

Chirac asks leaders to give up 25 percent of their key demands at Nice
summit

Fri Dec 8,2000 -- European Union leaders were in upbeat mood at a summit
on the French Riviera on Friday as they set to the task of overhauling the
outmoded way the EU does business. The 15-nation EU operates today in
much the same way as it did when it was founded by just six countries in
the late 1950s and the prospect of almost doubling in size over the next 10
years calls for a drastic streamlining of its decision-making.

The leaders were clearing the decks of other non-reform issues before getti ng
down to business on agreeing a new treaty to include the far-reaching
changes to voting and trimming the size of the executive European
Commission. One diplomat said summit host French President Jacques
Chirac had asked his fellow leaders to give up 25 percent of their demands
on a raft of contentious reforms.

Fri Dec 8,2000 -- Britain's top soldier on Friday acknowledged differences
with France over the new European Rapid Reaction Force and stressed that
NATO should not be superseded. Chief of the Defence Staff Sir Charles
Guthrie said U.S Defence Secretary William Cohen was also quite right to
sound "a warning bell" about the new force. In an interview with Reuters, h e
insisted: "Our approach is absolutely clear -- NATO remains the most
important alliance." At the European Union summit in Nice, French President
Jacques Chirac called for European defence planning to be independent of
NATO's military headquarters.

Middle East will remain U.S. priority in next administration says Pentagon

Fri Dec 8,2000 -- The Clinton administration is urging its successor to ens ure
that the Middle East remains a U.S. priority. But the administration has le ft
open significant changes in future policy in the policy -- particularly tow ard
Iraq. Administration officials said the next president will have to deal wi th a
Europe and NATO that wants to trade with the regime of Saddam Hussein.

A U.S. Defense Department report has issued such a recommendation in a
report for NATO. The report says both the United States and Europe must
make the Gulf and the rest of the Middle East a strategic priority. The rep ort
cites the need to maintain the flow of oil and natural gas from the Gulf to  the
West. It also points to missile and nonconventional weapons programs in
such countries as Iran and Iraq as well as their support of terrorism.

Canada's Supreme Court denies charity status appeal of abstinence-only
youth group

Fri Dec 8,2000 -- This morning the Supreme Court of Canada denied leave to
appeal to The Challenge Team, an abstinence-only educational group. The
Challenge Team was refused charitable status by Revenue Canada since
they refused to promote alternatives to chastity such as condoms and the
abortifacient morning-after pill. Unbelievably, the denial of appeal includ ed
forcing the very low budget group to pay Revenue Canada court costs.

Harold Visser, the leader of the Challenge Team, who represented the group
before the Federal Court of Appeal in March, told LifeSite that he was
"disappointed" by the ruling but not surprised especially since he had hear d
that Supreme Court Justice Clair L'Heureux-Dube was one of the three
Justices considering allowing the appeal.

Given that the court's most prominent radical feminist and pro-homosexual
activist judge was sitting in on the decision, the possibility of an object ive
legal decision was remote. L'Heureux-Dub=E9 spoke at a homosexual
conference in favour of legal recognition of homosexuals living together. " In
failing to recognize and support partnerships, traditional and otherwise, a re
we not doing violence to the fabric of our community?" asked L'Heureux-
Dube in her keynote talk given October 20 last year.

Indonesia gets morning-after-pill after Islamic group concedes to the UN

Fri Dec 8,2000 -- The Inter Press Service reported Monday that a major
Islamic religious group in Indonesia has conceded to the United Nations, th e
World Health Organization and others involved in an international promotion
of the abortifacient morning-after-pill. The Muhammadiyah has agreed to
stock its clinics with Postinor-2, the version of the abortifacient drugs t he
international consortium has been pushing in Asia. The religious group cite d
sections from the Koran, claiming the drugs did not offend the teachings of
Islam. They have accepted the false argument that the drugs prevent
pregnancy rather than cause abortion of an already created human being.
Muhammadiyah is also organizing seminars promoting the drugs.

The news report notes that Muhammadiyah's support was crucial in getting
Postinor-2 registered with health authorities in Indonesia - a prime target  for
population controllers since it is the world's fourth most populous nation.
(IPS, HEALTH: Religious Backing Boosts Use of Contraception, Dec 4,
2000)

The Indonesian Muslims do not seem to be aware that co-operation with
international de-population organizations, which are strongly anti-religiou s,
will likely eventually lead to a critical, if not fatal weakening of their family
supportive Muslim culture.
