Dear Norman,

JW stands for Jehovah's Witnesses.

To others who have provided a number of obvious references from the OT and
NT regarding the presence of the Holy Spirit prior to Pentecost (Norman and
N. and JaneB): you are all absolutely right; I didn't research it very well
did I?

BTW I've deleted the Lord's Witnesses book from my computer. It is too
bizarre for my liking.

Happy Christmas to all
David

I have been looking at that Lord's Witnesses book and my initial interest
waxed exceedingly when the author(s) mentioned that we become angels when
resurrected(!) and then began discussing the trinity as being errant and
Michael as Jesus. Very JW I thought to myself.

Dear Ones, yeppers, the Lords Witnesses have been deceived just like
Peter was when he told the Lord, far be it from You, when he was told of
the Lord imminent death. Old slewfoot at it again. Taking the truth and
twisting it. perverting it, and lying! He never gives up does he? Pray
for these people, please! Can you imagine how Peter felt when the Lord
Jesus Christ turned around on him and says to him, get thee behind me
satan! you don't know what spirit you're of!
Whoa!

This is my prayer, that we not be deceived. And yet if we are, for a
season, we are in good company. Bless Peter and his quick, discernment
thereafter his rebuke from the Lord, and the Words we have to draw from
him now through the working of the Holy Ghost. After all, the Living
Word is our final authority anyways. Blessings, Sky

Subject: [bprlist] Hanging shard or democratic soothsaying?
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>
Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2000 08:49:36 -0500

[This is from a bulletin board.]

<<It occurs to me that the proceedings in Florida may
be very much like what went on in antiquity...>>

The ancient Romans often resorted to "manual
recounts" when the vote was very close. A voter would
generally cast his ballot by tossing a pottery shard into
a pile for the candidate he desired -- the candidate with
the most shards won. The problem was that sometimes
the shards broke, so the vote wasn't always accurate.
Ergo, when the vote was very close the officials in
charge of the voting could (and often would if the
winner according to the first count wasn't to their liking)
conduct a "recount" by calling the voters back in and
asking each one to identify the candidate for whom he
  had intended to vote.

Unfortunately, sometimes by the time the recount was
conducted one or more of the voters had been
executed (usually by hanging) for some crime. When
this happened the officials could hire a haruspec
(soothsayer) to divine the deceased voter's intention by
watching the way his dead body swung from the
scaffold. This was referred to as a "hanging shard."

Cloning Critics Seek Support from Bush
By Cheryl K. Chumley
CNS Staff Writer December 18, 2000

(CNSNews.com) - Bioethics scholars are asking that President-elect George
W. Bush honor the pledges he made in recent months and refrain from
allocating federal funds for stem-cell research.

"The problem with genetic testing ... is that [it's tantamount] to playing
the role of God," said Father Joseph Howard, executive director of the
American Bioethics Advisory Commission and a former resident of Texas.

Howard pointed to the cloning studies underway at the University of
Wisconsin and in Britain - where DNA experts recently cloned a sheep,
Dolly - as evidence of the reality of a future that theoretically could
include scientifically, tailor-made humans.

"Human cloning is based on irresponsible science, and it leads to
disastrous and inhumane results," Howard said, adding that DNA testing can
also lead to selective abortions, in that pregnant women may one day be
able to test their unborn for genetic deficiencies and decide whether his
or her life should be terminated.

Advocates of stem-cell research and genetic testing have argued that
knowledge of embryonic disorders could aid efforts to develop cures, and
also allow would-be parents a choice in raising a child they believe is
fated to a problematic life.

But opponents like Howard say that while some genetic research is
beneficial, scientists should always be mindful of the temptation to alter
"God's will."

"They should be looking for treatments," Howard said. "Genetic testing is
not [inherently] wrong, but if then [an unborn child] is killed because of
it, that's wrong. Then you're destroying a child's inherent right to
life."

The American Bioethics Advisory Commission has called upon Bush to
maintain the same attitudes toward genetic testing that he held while
serving as governor of Texas. During his years as governor, he opposed
research deemed irresponsible by withholding taxpayer funds and denounced
such scientific studies as "unethical."

American Bioethics Advisory Commission members also want Bush to rectify
an "erroneous term" used in their national counterpart's mission
statement.

The National Bioethics Advisory Commission was established by an
executive
order signed by President Bill Clinton, after he read documents of their
intended agendas that included the term "pre-embryo."

Pre-embryo is a false and misleading term, Howard said, and is used by
those who refuse "to recognize that human personhood is constituted at
fertilization.

"Their use of this false term has allowed for the justification of the
destruction of countless numbers of embryonic human persons," he
continued. "The NBAC has provided erroneous scientific information to the
Clinton administration in order that the president sign legislation which
does not protect human[s]."

Howard said it was "absolutely critical" that Bush recognizes that human
life begins at fertilization, rather than after the first two months of
development in the womb.

Subject: [bprlist] China Considering Levitating Train

China Considering Levitating Train

By JOE McDONALD, Associated Press Writer

SHANGHAI, China (AP) - The image is as seductive as it is futuristic: a
train floating above its track races along at jet plane speed.

Now, Shanghai is buying into that dream. The city is contemplating
building the world's first commercial magnetic levitation train, hoping to
add to its high-tech luster by becoming a showcase for the costly,
controversial ``maglev'' technology.

Ardently pursuing the contract is a German consortium, Transrapid. Germany
has poured decades and billions of dollars into developing maglev, as has
Japan. Yet neither has put it to commercial use.

German press reports say Shanghai is to sign a contract with Transrapid as
early as this month for a 20- to 25-mile line to the 1-year-old Shanghai
Pudong International Airport. The venture could cost more than $1 billion.

Negotiations have been taking place, but neither the city government,
German officials nor Transrapid will comment. The partners in the
consortium are engineering giants Siemens and ThyssenKrupp and train
builder Adtranz, owned by DaimlerChrysler.

Maglev boosters call it an alternative to congested highways. The United
States, Japan and other countries are considering building maglev lines.

Doubters, including some in Shanghai, wonder whether the city could wind
up buying a white elephant. They note that rising speeds delivered by
cheaper, proven high-speed rail systems could make maglev obsolete.

``Frankly speaking, the project is controversial in local experts'
circles,'' said Yang Shu, a spokesman for the Shanghai City Planning
Administration Bureau. ``It will be the first commercial maglev in the
world, so it is quite experimental.''

If it works, the payoff could be bigger than just a ride to the airport at
250 mph.

The system's builder could be required to hand over technology - a common
condition of major Asian building projects. Overnight, Shanghai would
become a center for maglev development. And the railway would stand as
proof of this booming, energetic city's daring, visible to every visitor
arriving at Pudong airport.

``It has the right ring of next technology, futuristic, 21st century about
it,'' said Tony Eastham, an engineering professor at the Hong Kong
University of Science and Technology. ``Practically, you get a lot of
downside. This still is not a fully developed technology.''

Maglev uses powerful magnets to hold a train a few millimeters from the
track and propel it with little noise or vibration. In April, a Japanese
test maglev set a speed record of 343 mph. By contrast, French high-speed
rail tests have reached 310 mph.

Germany has its own test maglev, which a delighted Chinese Premier Zhu
Rongji rode in July.

In the United States, seven regions in California, Florida and elsewhere
are competing for an experimental maglev. In Japan, developers hope to
have it considered for a new Tokyo-Osaka line.

Maglev boosters suffered a setback in February when Germany canceled a
planned Berlin-Hamburg line. Railway officials said it would lose money
and critics worried its magnets might harm wildlife.

The German news magazine Focus said the proposal for Shanghai would
cost
$1.2 billion. That includes four 600-seat trains, a drive system and
switches, plus building costs of about $350 million.

The German government, eager for a working system to show off to buyers,
is offering financing of up to $450 million, the magazine said.

At that rate, Germany would be supplying equipment for free in exchange
for Shanghai building the precision-engineered magnetic track.

Shanghai, a sprawling business center with 13 million people, has served
as a laboratory for Chinese experiments in economic and social reform.
Maglev could do the same for mass transit. The city already has shown a
flair for public works projects. In the past five years, Shanghai has
built a subway, expressways, a new financial district and a tunnel under
the Huangpu River.

Still, it isn't clear how China could capitalize on maglev even if its
builders share their research. The technology has yet to win a commercial
customer. And engineers say it is so revolutionary that it is unlikely to
advance other work on power generation, electronics or weapons.

Maglev also faces growing competition from traditional rail systems.

Trains from France, Japan and Germany itself are offering increasing speed
and an impressive safety record that counts only a single fatal crash
since the first Shinkansen pulled out of Tokyo Station in 1964.

Even in China, plans for a 1,200-mile high-speed line linking Shanghai to
the national capital, Beijing, call for using rail, not maglev.

Ha'aretz: Arafat spreading weird allegations - Danny Rubenstein explains

By Danny Rubinstein Ha'aretz 19 December 2000

Israeli MKs paying a visit to Palestinian Chairman Yasser Arafat on Sunday
were surprised to hear some puzzling allegations directed against Chief of
Staff Shaul Mofaz, suggesting that he was conducting a policy independent of
the government. Arafat also claimed that those shooting at the neighborhood
of Gilo from Beit Jala were Palestinians collaborating with Israel, and
continued by stating that Israel was making use of radioactive bullets
against the Palestinian demonstrators.

This is not the first time that Arafat's guests have been perplexed by weird
allegations. In recent years, Arafat blamed Israel or "foreign elements" on
several occasions of carrying out provocations. The most notorious example
occured following an attack by the Islamic Jihad at the bus station in Beit
Lid, in 1995. Arafat claimed that the Shin Bet assisted the terrorists in
getting access to explosive and in reaching their target. In dozens of
meetings at his Gaza office, he showed his guests fake Israeli identity
cards, which Arafat said been retrieved by the Palestinian security and,
Arafat argued, constituted proof if his allegations.

During one of the meetings between the late Yitzhak Rabin and Arafat at the
Erez checkpoint, the Israeli prime minister responded angrily to the
allegations of the Palestinian leader, telling him that he did not want to
hear any more nonsense.

On another occasion, two years ago, following a terror attack in Netanya,
Arafat declared that the Palestinians were not involved and that the act was
the work of an Israeli gangster. His claims were made after stories in the
press that Netanya was turning into a center of organized crime.

Even when it was clear, on several occasions, that the attacks were
perpetrated by radical Islamic groups, Arafat maintained that the terrorists
were foreign agents, and hinted that they were operating under the direction
of foreign intelligence organizations (of Iran, Jordan, Syria, and also
Israel).

Over the years, Arafat's strange assertions have become more frequent, when
compared to the early years of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and
his theories, for example, that the two blue stripes on the Israeli flag
symbolized the Nile and Euphrates river, hinting at the "real" Israeli
territorial ambitions. He stopped making such claims when it was explained
to him that the stripes hinted at the design of a Jewish prayer shawl
(tallit).

These are only some of the weird aspects of Arafat's behavior, including his
regular meetings with Rabbi Moshe Hirsch from the religious neighborhood of
Mea She'arim in Jerusalem. Israelis and Palestinians have asked him on
several occasions why he continues to meet with Hirsch, the leader of the
anti-Zionist Neturei Karta, whom Arafat appointed to the very strange post
of "minister of Jewish Affairs." Arafat likes to be photographed with Hirsch
and once even introduced him to the late King Hussein of Jordan, during a
visit to Gaza.

The statements and behavior of Arafat that strike us as strange do not seem
to cause any puzzlement among the Palestinian public. His spokesmen explain
that Arafat is a political leader who wants to shape public opinion, and
that in his statements about the flag, wanted to point out Israel's true
territorial ambitions. In the case of Rabbi Hirsch, Arafat wants to
highlight that he is not against Jews but against Israel and Zionism, which
Hirsch regularly denounces.

His claims against Mofaz and Israeli intelligence are also accepted by many
Palestinians in the territories. The Palestinians are well aware of the
ongoing debate inside Israel and hear the slogans "Let the IDF win." As far
as they are concerned, Israel's reaction to the Intifada is brutal and
aggressive and it is guided by senior IDF officers, headed by Mofaz.

The Palestinian press is full of graphic and horrific descriptions of the
ways in which the IDF kills Palestinian activists. All the killings were
carried out with the use of high-tech weapons, agents or undercover troops.
As a result, the Palestinian public is angry and afraid, and one of the side
effects of this phenomenon is that they are willing to believe in stories of
radioactive bullets.

Clinton again signs delay on embassy move to Jerusalem

President says U.S. must maintain 'honest broker' status

                  By Aluf Benn
                  Ha'aretz Diplomatic Correspondent

American President Bill Clinton signed a presidential decree a few days ago
stating that for reasons of national security, the U.S. Embassy in Israel will
not be moved to Jerusalem. According to a diplomatic source in Jerusalem,
Prime Minister Ehud Barak was informed of President Clinton's decision
beforehand and did not ask Clinton to change it.

American law stipulates that the administration must move its embassy to
Jerusalem by May 1999. The president may, however, sign a presidential
decree every six months granting the administration a waiver from moving the
embassy to Jerusalem, if he so wishes. Until now, Clinton has signed the
decrees on the dates set by law.

After the Camp David summit in July, Clinton promised to reconsider his
position in return for the concessions Barak offered at the summit. In an
Israeli television interview, Clinton said that although he has always wanted
to move the U.S Embassy to Jerusalem, he has refrained from doing so in
order not to undermine the United States's image as an honest broker
between the two sides. Clinton promised in the interview to make his
decision by the end of the year.

The Prime Minister's Office is currently making an effort to attain the special
$450-million military aid package that Clinton promised Israel. Danny Yatom,
Barak's political-security adviser, is currently holding talks with Sandy
Berger, Clinton's National Security Adviser, and with Jewish leaders in the
United States. The aid package was submitted for approval by the outgoing
Congress, but has been held up for internal American reasons.

Cloned Angus bull may lead to safer beef

By MICHAEL GRACZYK, Associated Press

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (December 18, 2000 6:58 p.m. EST
http://www.nandotimes.com) - Scientists at Texas A&M University unveiled a
disease-resistant black Angus bull Monday, an accomplishment they said
could lead to safer beef and more efficient ranching worldwide.

"The potential for spreading the genetically based resistance to disease,
I think, is exceptional," said Richard Adams, the College of Veterinary
Medicine dean.

The month-old calf, called Bull 86 Squared, was cloned from genetic
material frozen 15 years ago from Bull 86. That animal, which died of old
age in 1997, was naturally resistant to brucellosis, tuberculosis and
salmonellosis -- all of which can be passed on to humans through uncooked
beef, unpasteurized milk or contamination.

The new animal carries the same traits. More of its genes will be tested
for resistance to other diseases over the next few years.

"What they've done is identify an animal that appears to have resistance
to these diseases and all they're doing is making another animal that's
genetically identical to it," said Steven Kappes, an animal germ plasma
and reproduction expert with the Agriculture Department's research
service. "So they're not making the animal safer to eat."

"What they're doing is just making more of something that is good," he
said. "That is a key: to identify animals that are genetically superior in
certain traits and this allows us to make more of them."

Joe Templeton, an A&M professor of genetics and veterinary pathobiology,
said cloning was a key addition to disease control.

"The diseases we spent billions of dollars eradicating in the United
States are across the border," he said. "We import millions of cows a
year. Many of those are infected and cause potential reintroduction of
these diseases and another multibillion-dollar eradicating program."

He also said genetic engineering was more reliable in preventing diseases
than vaccines and antibiotics.

"You just turn them loose, let them eat the grass and enjoy," Templeton
said. "When they go into the food market, they don't have antibiotics in
them."

Salmonellosis can cause diarrhea, fever and cramps and is potentially
fatal. Brucellosis carries the potential for brain infections and heart
dysfunction, while TB is a deadly respiratory ailment.

The genetically engineered calf is 10 to 100 times more resistant to the
diseases than a normal animal, said Garry Adams, associate dean for
research and graduate studies.

"But what is important is that if they are also vaccinated, they will then
become super resistant," he said -- between 100 and 1,000 times more
resistant.

           Minor Planet AstroAlert: 2000 YA

The minor planet 2000 YA will fly by Earth at only 0.0049
astronomical unit -- twice the Earth-Moon distance --
early on December 22nd (Universal Time). That's Thursday
evening in North America. In the hours leading up to this
close encounter, 2000 YA is expected to become as bright
as magnitude 15 as it races through Andromeda at several
degrees per hour.

The hitherto unknown asteroid was picked up this past
weekend by the Lowell Observatory - LONEOS survey, with
Brian A. Skiff at the controls of the 0.59-meter Schmidt
telescope and Bruce Koehn making the measurements. The
discovery was announced Sunday evening by the Minor
Planet Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in an electronic
circular issued by Associate Director Gareth V. Williams,
who also calculated the preliminary orbit. Like 2000 WL107
earlier this month, 2000 YA provides a rare opportunity
for those with large amateur telescopes, or CCD-equipped
smaller telescopes, to observe a relatively tiny object.

[...]

IAU Circular 7544, issued December 18th by the Central Bureau
for Astronomical Telegrams (Smithsonian Astrophysical
Observatory), reports that Richard P. Binzel and A. S.
Rivkin (MIT) and Alan W. Harris (JPL) obtained spectra of
this object with the Palomar 200-inch reflector on Sunday
night. These show 2000 YA to be an S-type asteroid
(relatively high albedo) and suggest that it may be only
about 50 meters in diameters -- half the length of a
football field.

Subject: [bprlist] Israeli Army Blows Up Dead Sea Bottom : Video clip
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>
Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2000 19:30:00 -0500

Five days before the mini-sub Delta arrived in Israel by air
to explore the bottom of the Dead Sea, the Israeli Army
caused a massive explosion in the area of the first planned
dive.

This is the first video available of the explosion and the
commentary of Michael Sanders, Director of Expeditions of
the Mysteries of the Bible Research Foundation who
collaborated with the Dead Sea Research Center of the
University of Tel Aviv on the project.

It caused a 4.2 reading on the Richter Scale and the
official reason for the explosion was to test tectonic
activity in the area. No such explosion had ever been done
before.

This scene was included in the Channel 4 version of the
expedition shown in the UK but "standards and practices" of
NBC refused to allow it to be considered in the US
version!!!!

More censorship?

   9. IN BRIEF

1. BARAK PREPARED TO GIVE UP JERUSALEM
Amidst both the continuing war with the Palestinians and the political
uncertainty, an Israeli delegation departed last night for Washington to
resume final-status talks. The negotiations will be delayed by one day,
as delegation head Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami was unable to leave
until this afternoon. Immigration Minister Yuli Tamir (Labor), a member
of the delegation, said today that a "historic moment of very painful
compromise in Jerusalem is approaching."

The transition Barak-government is prepared to give away the entire old
city of Jerusalem - excluding the Western Wall and the Jewish Quarter, but
including the Temple Mount - in exchange for pushing off the refugees
issue. Ma'ariv newspaper reports that the government has already made
plans to "spin" the idea to the public by claiming that the Palestinians
already have de-facto control of the Temple Mount.

According to an editorial in the same paper, "Most of the public does not
believe that Prime Minister Barak has a mandate now to conduct peace talks
without a Knesset majority, especially after his resignation."

2. NETANYAHU PULLS OUT; SHARON TO RUN AGAINST BARAK
The political drama of the past few days ended late last night with the
following important developments: * Shas voted against the dissolution of
the Knesset, and the Knesset in fact remained intact. The immediate
consequence of this is that early Knesset elections are not scheduled, and
special Prime Ministerial elections will be held on Feb. 6; * the
"Netanyahu bill" passed, allowing a non-Knesset Member to run for Prime
Minister. The bill soon became obsolete, however, because: * former Prime
Minister Netanyahu announced that he would not run for Prime Minister. He
explained this last night by saying, "I want to be able to *function* as
Prime Minister, not just *be* Prime Minister - and if the Knesset remains
the same, I will not be able to form an effective coalition."

The Likud's primaries for today have been cancelled, and the candidates in
the Prime Ministerial elections will be Ehud Barak, Ariel Sharon - and
possibly Shimon Peres. Moshe Feiglin's candidacy for Likud head was nixed
by the Likud on procedural grounds; he has been a member of the Likud for
only six months and not the required nine. Likud officials had earlier
told him that this technicality could be waived.

Low-key mutual recriminations between Shas and the Likud were heard=20
today. Likud MK Tzippy Livni said that "more than 50% of the public was
denied its chance to choose its candidate and his way," while Shas MK
Shlomo Benizri said that the Likud "should not be a sore loser." Livni
told Arutz-7 today that she was disappointed that Netanyahu was not
running - "but this was his personal decision; as someone who served as
Prime Minister, and whose term was cut short - he did not want to face the
same troubles again in a problematic Knesset [in which he would have the
support of only 58-60 Knesset Members]. Unfortunately, the condition that
he laid down - that he would run only if there are simultaneous Knesset
elections - has left him outside the race altogether. However, the entire
Likud will now unite behind Ariel Sharon, who is not exactly a nobody - he
has many achievements for the State of Israel under his belt."

Shimon Peres appears to be nearing a decision to run for Prime Minister,
on behalf of the Meretz party. He met with Meretz leader MK Yossi Sarid,
and asked that the party grant him the necessary signatures of 10 MKs
enabling him to run. Peres said today, "I did not initiate this idea, but
I am considering this issue very seriously from both sides, as it is a
public call=85" Sarid said that Meretz would offer the necessary support i=
f
it becomes clear that Peres has greater chance to beat Sharon than Barak.

3. PSAGOT UNDER SIEGE
Palestinians rained fire from several locations upon Psagot and the road
leading to it throughout the night. The army instructed several families
on the town's perimeter to gather in their homes' inner rooms. Yesha
(Judea and Samaria) Council Secretary-General Shlomo Filber, who lives in
Psagot, says that the presence of the Israeli delegation in Washington -
which is willing to make great concessions even as the Palestinian
violence continues - is essentially a "green light" for shooting on
Psagot.

Evita Mazouz, a resident of Psagot, was asked today how she explains the
courageous stand taken by Yesha residents in the face of the continued
attacks against them. She said, "We're staying here because we know that
if we [are forced to] give up here, then there will be no other place in
Eretz Yisrael in which we will be safe."

In other violence, Arabs shot from within Jerusalem's Beit Hanina and
Dahai el-Barid neighborhoods upon Israeli forces last night. Fire was
also opened at Israeli homes in Hevron, Ofer Base near Givat Ze'ev, an IDF
patrol on the southern Shechem bypass road, at Israeli cars near Brachah
and Ofarim, and at several locations in Gaza. Palestinian rioters clashed
with IDF forces near Kiryat Arba.

4. POLITICAL TALK
The elections for Prime Minister are scheduled to be held seven weeks from
today, on Feb. 6th. The Central Election Committee feels that it may not
be have sufficient time to prepare, however, and Meretz MK Amnon
Rubenstein has proposed a new bill setting election day for 30 days later.
The Knesset will not debate the bill today, however, due to objections
from many parties:
 * Barak fears that it will give Shimon Peres more time to prepare for a
race against him;
 * the Likud is concerned that it will give Barak more time to reach an
agreement with Arafat; and
 * other parties such as Shas and United Torah Judaism simply feel "the
sooner, the better." Late in the afternoon, a final decision was made by
Prime Minister Barak, Knesset Speaker Burg, and the Law Committee=20
Chairman
Rubenstein that the election would be held on Feb. 6th.

Dr. Yaakov Katz, a polling expert from Bar Ilan University, told Arutz-7
today that current findings show Ariel Sharon leading Ehud Barak by 3-4%:=20
"Sharon, however, seems not to be able to pass the 40% mark, which is a
problem for him; if Barak does something dramatic in the next few weeks,
or if Peres enters the race, Sharon's lead could easily be turned around."
Katz said that the signing by Barak of a peace agreement, even if it
includes far-reaching concessions in Jerusalem, could get him re-elected:=20
"It's not because the public is crazy about Barak. But we have bitter
experience with the Israeli public, in that whenever a major or dramatic
step is taken, the public gives credit to the one who carries it out -
without paying attention to how dangerous it may turn out to be a few
months from now..."

5. PROTESTING TEMPLE MOUNT INJUSTICE
The sit-in strike on the Western Wall steps entered its tenth day today.
Yehuda Etzion and colleagues, sitting at the staircase leading from the
Old City's Jewish Quarter to the Western Wall, are protesting the ban on
Jewish entry to the Temple Mount. Israel's police have not allowed Jews
to enter Judaism's holiest site since the beginning of the violence
shortly before Rosh HaShanah, almost three months ago.

In addition, Etzion has harsh words for the ongoing desecration of the
Temple Mount by the Moslem Waqf, barely 100 meters away: "Day in and=20
day
out, Palestinian trucks empty out more and more of the Temple Mount ruins,
carrying away precious vestiges of the historic Jewish presence there -
and all with the approval of Prime Minister Barak!" He said that he would
be willing to help organize a protest against the Moslem construction
works there, and invited those interested to call him at 053-319-845
(outside Israel: +972-53-319-845). Among other construction projects, the
Waqf has dug a one-meter deep pit, about 3-4 meters wide, north-west of
the area known as Solomon's Stables.

6. DIDOVSKY FUND
A fund has been established to assist the family of Rina Didovsky, who was
murdered in a terrorist attack outside Kiryat Arba earlier this month.=20
Her husband Chaim Didovsky, who founded and single-handedly runs the=20
HaKol
MeHashetach News Agency in Yesha, is left with six children, ranging in
age from 14 months to 16 years; one son is to be Bar-Mitzvah this month.=20
Checks can be sent to the National Council of Young Israel, with a
notation earmarking it for the Didovsky Children Fund. Tax-deductible
(U.S.) receipts will be sent for sums of $200 or more. The checks should
be sent to: National Council of Young Israel, 3 W.16th St., NY NY 10011,
to the attention of Chana S.

7. PETITION FOR MISSING ISRAELI SOLDIERS
On October 7th, 2000, Hizbullah terrorists penetrated the Israeli border
and kidnapped three Israeli soldiers - Adi Avitan, Binyamin Avraham and
Omer Souad. Eight days later, Hizbullah announced that another Israeli
citizen, 54-year-old Elchanan Tannenbaum, had also been taken captive.=20
The four were thus added to a list of other Israeli soldiers whose
whereabouts remain unknown: Zechariah Baumel, Yehuda Katz, and Tzvi
Feldman - who were captured in a battle in 1982 with Palestinian and
Syrian forces near the Lebanese village of Sultan Yaaqub - and Capt. Ron
Arad, who was captured four years later. The International Coalition for
Missing Israeli Soldiers is attempting to attract sorely-need
international intervention, and is sponsoring an Internet petition in
support of Israel's kidnapped and missing soldiers and their families.=20
The goal: at least 1,000,000 signatures. The petition can be seen and
signed at <http://www.mia.org.il/petition/>.

8. ON BEHALF OF POLLARD
The case of Jonathan Pollard has once again begun to arouse interest and
concern, in anticipation of U.S. President Clinton's departure from office
five weeks from now. Pollard was convicted of spying for Israel, and has
served 15 years of a life sentence - the longest term in American prison
ever served for spying for a U.S. ally. For one thing, Jonathan Pollard's
new attorneys recently asked Clinton to commute the sentence to =01'time
already served.' They base their request on what they say is documented
"serious government misconduct" - including last-minute classified memos
written by then-Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger - during the
sentencing. (Ironically, then-President Bush pardoned Weinberger,
convicted of lying in the Iran-Contra scandal, during the last week of his
term.) "As a result of that misconduct," wrote the attorneys to Clinton,
"=85Mr. Pollard was sentenced to life in prison on the basis of false
allegations, and under circumstances that violated his plea agreement."

The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations wrote
a letter this month asking President Clinton to grant clemency to Pollard
on humanitarian grounds. Prime Minister Ehud Barak also broached the
issue of Pollard clemency with Clinton last week, according to
administration officials. Clinton reportedly did not commit himself one
way or another. Reform leader Rabbi David Saperstein has also forwarded a
letter to Clinton urging the release of Pollard. Finally, Seymour D.
Reich - past president of both the above Conference and B'nai Brith
International - wrote to The New York Times yesterday:
"It is hard to comprehend the vindictiveness of those who oppose clemency
=20
for Mr. Pollard while refusing to explain why=85 [T]he life sentence he
received is almost unheard of in such a case, especially since the
government reneged on its agreement not to seek a life sentence=85 [H]e wa=
s
never convicted in a court trial that would have required the hard
evidence that his accusers now refuse to reveal while they circulate
undocumented rumors. It is time for President Clinton to grant clemency
to Mr. Pollard on humanitarian grounds and set him free."

9. IN BRIEF
Attorney-General Elyakim Rubenstein has given his OK for the police to
question Prime Minister Barak regarding the Labor-Barak campaign funding
scandal. The police have transferred their findings thus far - including
suspicions of crimes committed by Cabinet Secretary Yitzchak Herzog - to
the State Attorney's Office...
Official statistics of poverty in Israel were released today, and are not
=20
encouraging. The amount of people defined as living under the poverty line
is 1.13 million - half of whom are children. Almost 300,000 families,
comprising one-quarter of Israel's children, earn less than 4,000 shekels
(almost $1,000) a month. Jerusalem and Bnei Brak lead the country in
municipal poverty...
A Jerusalem Magistrates Court ordered Prof. Moshe Zimmerman to pay MK
Rehavam Ze'evi 35,000 shekels (approx. $8,600). Zimmerman was convicted
of slandering Ze'evi by calling him a "Nazi clone." The judge noted that
the offense was particularly severe in the Zimmerman is a professor of
modern history...

The First Measured Century
Premieres on PBS Wednesday, December 20th, 2000
from 8:30 to 11:30 PM

                                The First Measured Century on
                                                PBS
The Other Way of Looking at American History

As Americans reflect on the official end of the twentieth century, we ask,
"What happened?" The answers are called "history," and these days, there
is more than one way of telling history. Americans have learned about
yesteryear in terms of events, politics, personalities, science, inventions, and
arts. We saw: Titanic, Lindbergh, Challenger, Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt,
world wars, the Roaring Twenties, hula-hoops, Elvis, Hiroshima, Vietnam,
Watergate, the civil rights and feminist movements, the Beatles, Reagan,
O.J. and Monica. Some of the best have come from PBS.

In a sense, these are "anecdotes," defined as "short narratives of interesting,
amusing, or biographical incidents." But there is another way of answering
"What Happened?"-- through the lens of data and measurement, which
shows us how the lives of everyday Americans changed. (The plural of
anecdote is data.)

The three-hour PBS program "The First Measured Century," tells the story of
America by the numbers through the eyes of those who did the measuring
and the interpreting, often in highly controversial and unusual circumstances.
These include George Gallup, Alfred Kinsey, Robert and Helen Lynd (authors
of "Middletown,") Daniel P. Moynihan, W.E.B. Dubois, Jane Addams and
Julia Lathrop, Frederick Jackson Turner, Franz Boas (who turned back the
tide of "scientific racism,") James Q. Wilson (co-author of the "broken
windows" theory of crime prevention), Frank Fukuyama, William Julius
Wilson, and many others who, for the most part, are unheralded.

We begin our look at social indicators before the time of Gross National
Product, public opinion polls, rates of unemployment, out-of-wedlock births,
infant deaths and maternal mortality (which was the second leading cause of
death among women, beaten out only by tuberculosis.)

We see the United States going from half the size of the four biggest
European nations to twice the size of all of them combined. We see a nation
of 50 million, taking in 25 million immigrants.

We see the population of cities soar, and then fade, as America becomes
the first majority suburban nation. We see a nation with less mobility today
than in 1900, the sharp rise and slow fall of violent crime rates, and
increasing wealth, with a big argument about how it is shared.

"The First Measured Century" is a fast paced narrative with unique graphics.
It's history as you've never seen it, measured. And dramatic.

Regarding Genesis One, only one man, Adam/Eve, was created (bara) on
Day Six of creation week. Chapter two ellaborates by telling us that
God made the body of the first man from the dust of the earth and
breathed into his nostrils the breath of life so that Adam became a
living soul. Adam then named the animals, who were male and female,
but he found no one who corresponded to him. Then God put Adam to
sleep and brought Eve out of Adam's side.

The human race began with only one man and woman. It was through the
sin of Adam that death came into the world and passed down to us. One
unique descendant of Adam, Jesus Christ, purchased salvation on the
cross by providing a perfect sacrifice for our sins and a final end
of sin and death.

Had other humans lived on earth, no means of redemption would have
been possible for them. Hebrews 1-3 tells us that Godn is concerned
with the salvation of the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve only.

I very sorry but this all sounds like foolish genealogies.
"But avoid foolish questions, and GENEALOGIES, and contentions, and
strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain." Titus 3: 9

Also if there were others would the not have continued to live in the
perfect state they were created in? Even up to the time of the flood, of
course we know there were no such people at that time.

Hazel, just had to tell you how very much I agreed with you on this
genealogy business. I got on the "bpr list" one day and got off the next.
Have a wonderful family time at Christmas and a joyful holiday season
because of Him! Love, Barbara Wilhelm
