An Incomplete History of Ice Falls

1700s: Ice "as big as an elephant" was said to fall on
Seringapatam, India, and took three days to melt.

1802: A lump of ice fell from the sky on Hungary that had
a volume of 18 cubic feet.

1849: A block of ice that was estimated to weigh a half a
ton fell on the Balvullich farm in Ord, Scotland. It
measured about 20 feet in diameter and was reported to be
crystal clear, although apparently made up of many cubes
and diamond-shaped hunks of ice fused together.

1950: In December, a man driving near Dumbarton, Scotland
was nearly struck by a rain of ice that crashed down onto
the road. A subsequent police investigation weighed the
collected ice at 112 pounds.

1950: Reported ice falls in Great Britain.

1951: Reported ice falls in Great Britain.

1951: Kempton, West Germany. A carpenter working on a roof
was struck and killed by a 6-foot long, 6-inch around rod
of solid ice.

1957: Farmer Edwin Groff of Bernville, Pennsylvania was
witness to a 50-pound, white globe of ice that whooshed
through the sky and crashed on his property. A few seconds
later, a second ball of ice, half the size of the first,
smashed into his flower bed, just a few yards from where he
was standing.

1958: On September 2, Dominick Bacigalupo was knocked from
his feet when a 70-pound ball of ice tore through his roof
and attic and broke into three pieces on his kitchen floor.

1965: The roof of the Phillips Petroleum Plant in Woods
Cross, Utah was punctured by a 50-pound block of ice.

1973: One well-documented ice fall was actually witnessed
by a British meteorologist. While standing on a street
corner in Manchester, R.F. Griffiths saw a huge chunk of
ice smash to pieces on the road just 10 feet away. The
largest piece, which he recovered, weighed 3-1/2 pounds.

1981: On September 5 near the town of Nyköping, South of
Stockholm, a man was walking in the woods when he heard a
strange noise from the sky and looked up. After a short
time he saw an object coming down through the air crashing
to the ground. When he approached the place of impact he
saw that the debris was made of ice. Seconds later another
object fell not far from him.

1985: June, 26 in Hartford, Connecticut a 1500-pound sheet
of ice dropped from the sky and smashed into a backyard
fence. It was 6 feet long, 8 inches thick and estimated to
be moving at about 200 mph. While suggestions were made
that the ice was cosmic in origin, an astronomy professor
assured everyone that it couldn't be cometary, because the
sun would melt particles of ice in outer space. Instead, he
opted for strong thunderstorm winds picking the ice up from
"somewhere" and dropping it on Hartford.

1990: A football-sized chunk of ice landed in a garden
near Lake Vattern, Sweden. It was described as being
somewhat milky in appearance, dotted with bits of debris
colored gray, brown, and lilac.

1991: In October, a 20-pound mass of ice smashed through
the roof of the home of Mrs. Mavis Anderson in West
Yorkshire, England, landing in her kitchen.

1992: A sphere of yellow-tinged ice crashed through the
roof of a factory in Salihli, Turkey. Witnesses said the
ice released the odor of rotting fruit as it melted. This
sounds like a candidate for airplane waste, but officials
determined there were no planes flying in the area at the
time.

1995: On March 23, farmers saw three large chunks of ice
crash with a whoosh into the paddy fields of Yaodou
village. The largest chunk left a crater about one metre
(3.3 ft) in diameter and a half metre deep. The Chinese
scientists said these were ice meteorites -- ice debris
from a meteor hitting the earth's atmosphere. "They are
white, semi-transparent, with an irregular shape and what
are apparently air bubbles on both the surface and inside
the ice. Unlike man-made ice, the ice has air bubbles, is
relatively light and doesn't have the layered structure of
hailstones."

1995: Cases of falling ice had been reported in China and
Brazil where blocks as heavy as 440 pounds crashed to Earth.

1999: On November, 8 at a golf course north of Trelleberg
in the very South of Sweden, a couple of golfers had just
finished hole number 11 when they heard an airplane while
walking towards the next. When the next golfers arrived to
number 11 they found a large chunk of ice embedded into the
golf green and several smaller parts scattered around it.

1999: On October 25th, Mr Bengt Persson in Eskilstuna west
of Stockholm heard a loud bang and looked out of his
window. Outside at the parking lot he saw that his cars
front window was broken and that several large pieces of
ice was laying on the ground. An investigation by the
Swedish organisation for investigations of aerial
phenomenon, UFO-Sweden, showed that several air crafts flow
over the area at the time. One of them was a long distance
passanger liner coming from Tokyo passing at an altitude of
30.000 feet, which was the probable cause of the ice fall.

2000: On January 2 in Surrey, England (southwest of
London), an East Indian man was walking through Newton
Athletic Park when he heard a strange whistling sound
overhead. Seconds later, a large hunk of ice fell out of
the clear blue sky and pounded into the soft ground,
shattering over a 50-foot-wide area. The ice dug a hole a
foot deep and a foot in diameter.

2000: Between Jan. 8 and Jan 20, there were 30 reported
ice falls in Spain, all of them described as the size and
shape of basketballs.

2000: January 27, priests at the Salesian monastery in
L'Aquila, Italy were startled by a loud crash.
Investigating the noise, they discovered a large chunk of
ice on their patio, largely intact. Determining that it
could not have slipped off their roof and at a loss to
explain just where it came from, they called the police.
Upon examination, the block of ice weighed in at 2
kilograms (4.4 pounds) and no source was determined.

2000: January 27, about 100 miles northeast in Ancona,
Itlay, the local magistrate was called to investigate the
report of a man who was struck on the head by a 1 kilogram
(2.2 pound) chunk of ice that apparently fell from the sky.

2000: January 29, a man in Canada reported that ice shaped
like a basketball hit the roof of his house. "It sounded
like a hand grendade going off."

2000: In April, there were reports from Austria that say
two dozen football-sized chunks of ice fell from the sky
over a period of days. Near Vienna, an icy object blasted a
hole, two square metre wide, in the roof of a house.

Possible Explanations

There are four possible, but not equally plausible,
explanations for these puzzling ice falls:

Airplane ice. Undoubtedly, some small pieces of ice must
fall from the wings of airplanes. Today's aircraft,
however, have heating devices that de-ice the wings before
any significant buildup can occur. Certainly, chunks of ice
of the size that have been reported are highly unlikely. As
mentioned above, analysis of recovered ice has also ruled
out the possibility of ejected waste from airplanes.

Weird weather. Hail is a relatively uncommon weather
event, and large hailstones are rarer still. The largest
hailstones recorded have been about 5 inches in diameter
with a maximum weight of about 2 pounds. Such large
hailstones can only be formed in violent thunderstorms. An
updraft of 90 mph or stronger is needed to create a
hailstone the size of a baseball. The problem with this
explanation for the incidents cited above is that usually
just one or two large chunks of ice fall from the sky, and
there is no report of a storm of any kind. In fact, many
ice falls seem to come from a clear and cloudless sky.

Comets. Comets are composed of ice and dust and it's
theoretically possible that small comets could enter the
Earth's atmosphere and strike the Earth before exploding or
completely melting. Professor Martinez, investigating the
falls in Spain, said that they were too scattered and
infrequent to be pieces of comet tails. Also, he said, they
should have been large enough when entering the Earth's
atmosphere to register on radar screens, which they didn't.

UFOs. Inevitably, somebody in the UFO community suggests
that extraterrestrial craft are somehow responsible. Are
they suggesting that space-trekking vehicles do not have as
sophisticated de-icing devices as our aircraft do? Or that
the ice was discarded from the flying saucers after some
wild, onboard Pleidian party? Or, as Italian UFOlogist
Eufemio Del Buono stated in reference to the ice falls in
his country, are they "a warning from extraterrestrial
intelligences"?

The fact is, no one knows for certain where this ice comes
from or how it is formed. For now, it is just one more
Earth mystery.

the U.N. Security Council, the United States, France and the Catholic
Church for failing to prevent the slaughter of more than 500,000 Rwandans.

The year 2000, the year of social acceptability of the alternative
lifestryle

In my hometown, Durban S/Africa, the 13th Aids Conference is being
held.
If one did not know what the word "aids" represents, one would be
inclined to think by all the advertising, publication, and colourful
banners propped up all over the city that it is a massive party
celebration. Realistically, those who contract aids, have either been
involved in a homosexual relationship, or are promiscuous and
contracted
it from a person who is bisexual. Originally, the disease was
diagnosed
in homosexuals and drug addicts who shared injection needles. It was
then discovered that woman were also contracting it, although not
being
drug addicts, but because of their sexual union with a bisexual man
who
had prior contact with an aids carrier. I know that there are many
innocent who have contracted this disease, as babies who's mothers
have
the virus, and husbands and wives of cheating partners.

Made to seem as though it is something to celebrate about, no
consideration is given to the fact that those who have contracted this
virus through homosexuality, or promiscuity are not addressing it as
sinful conduct being the consequence. Where is the Church, I ask, in a
time as this? Those dying of this disease, if they have not repented
of
their sin are lost forever. Read Luke 12:42-48

It is difficult to understand when homosexuality is still condoned
despite knowledge that it originally was, and still is the primary
cause
of aids. It is understandable when one is powerless over sin until
Christ can release them, but when one see's what the direct
consequence
of homosexuality is, and condones the continual practice of it,
knowing
how perilous it is nationally, it makes one think that they can either
be deliberately allowing it or they are deluded and have lost all
sense
of morality. I have recorded proof about the educational system
Arkansas
governor Bill and Hillary Clinton established called the Governors
School, were male college graduates majoring in political science of
exceptional standard were encouraged to attend the school and be
briefed
upon future politics. One of the things, apart from all the ungodly
instruction they were subjected to, was the toleration of homosexual
behavior in society. Other instruction these college graduates
received
was how to meditate and visualize in making contact with their
personal
spiritual entity (worship of self and the universe as God), to
withdraw
from narrow minded biblical instruction, rebellion against authority,
and alienation from parents as preparation for the New World Order. I
could go on to say that the agenda of the New World Order is the
proposal for the eventual elimination of the family, therefore the
acceptance of homosexuality and lesbianism, allowing them the right to
be married bona fide could be one of their evil schemes to relate to
children its normality.

Who knows how many politicians there are today who are demon possessed
having extremely powerful influences with authority to permit the
practice of homosexuality publicly acceptable. I do not think this
school is in existence any longer due to one graduate committing
suicide, and various other complaints by parents of the brainwashing
this school subjected their sons to.

This year more than any other, there has been a consorted effort to
promote homosexuality and lesbianism. Television, public
demonstration
marches, advertising, and school children are being made to believe it
to be an acceptable lifestyle. I was informed by a social worker who
is
responsible for placing children into foster homes that soon
recognition
will have to be given to foster children into homes of people living
under condition of alternative(gay) lifestyles. She says that it was
met with some resistance by social workers but some have accepted the
possibility now. She also said that when the day comes when she is
placed under obligation to conform to the social service request to
consider fostering children in homes of gay couples, she would have to
consider resigning. Neil

PACIFIC LUNAR ECLIPSE

Hawaii, the Pacific Ocean, the Far East, and Australia are the best
places to be for a grand lunar eclipse on July 16th, which is
especially noteworthy because the Moon passes almost dead center
through the Earth's shadow. As a result totality lasts an unusually
long 1 hour 47 minutes, centered on 13:56 Universal Time (3:56 a.m. in
Hawaii). This is the longest total lunar eclipse since August 13,
1859, according to the Belgian astronomer Jean Meeus, and the longest
Earthlings will see again until sometime after the year 3000! For
details see the July Sky & Telescope (page 103) or

Neil

It's amazing to me that in the year 2000 there are still intelligent people
who hide their biogotry behind the cloak of carefully selected religious
moral concepts and who distort the truth with convenient falsehoods. My God,
man, in the early days of Christianity, Christian's lifestyles were
considered "alternative." The Bible doesn't condemn homosexuality anymore
strongly than it condemns other "sins." In fact, it proposes significantly
harsher punishments for the sins of adultery, inhospitality etc.

I'm inrigued at the way intolerant Christians are so quick to use infrequent
Biblical passages to excoriate homosexuals. Yet, they've carefully chosen to
ignore the tracts that propose death to adulterers, those who consume
forbidden foods etc. If homosexuality is so much worse than the other sins
discussed in the Bible, would you mind pointing me to the passages that rank
sin according to degree of sinfulness. From the level of rancor and
animosity spewed by some "Christians," one would suspect that homosexuality
should rank far above all other sins. This is simply not substantiated.
Since there is no ranking of sin in the Bible, then the only means of
possibly understanding relative sinfulness may be to tabulate the number of
times a particular sin is mentioned. Has anyone ever done this? I would be
interested in the results. In fact, if homosexuality is such an
overarchingly evil sin, you'd suspect that Jesus Christ would have devoted
considerable time to warning his peers of this sin. Neil, how many times
does Jesus Christ mention the "sin of homosexuality?"

On the origins of AIDS, you've got the story of the genesis of this
devastating disease totally wrong. Yes, AIDS was first identified in the gay
population in the U.S. However, there is overwhelming scientific evidence
now that AIDS first entered humans populations from simians in Africa in the
very early part of this century. In fact, medical records from the first
half of the 20th Century point to the early '30's as the beginning of AIDS
infiltration into humans. And this was in HETEROSEXUALS. Not gays.

Neil, I just re-read your paragraph that begins

"Who knows how many politicians there are today who are demon possessed
having extremely powerful influences with authority to permit the practice
of homosexuality publicly acceptable."

Neil, this sounds too close to Nazi rhetoric for me to believe that it is
coming from a religious person of any faith. Sounds to me like you are
calling for politicians to issue Nuremburg-type decrees in the tradition of
Nazis that deny homosexuals even a modicum of rights. Following your logic,
maybe it's time to escalate this to the next step: a "Final Solution" for
homosexuals?

Is this where you want your chruch to go, Neil? Is this true Christian
charity and compassion at work. If this is the case, Neil, then I now
understand perfectly well where your God was during the holocaust. Your God
turned his back on the Jews and, you sound as though you are pleading for
your God to turn his back on the homosexuals.

God help us if this is the path your form of Christianity takes.

Harry

Subject: [BPR] - Seeking input on 'Hang Ten' initiative
From: bpr-list@philologos.org("Timothy")
Date: Sat, 8 Jul 2000 13:26:43 -0700 (PDT)

As I made you aware in an earlier e-mail, there is
much controversy about an initiative called 'Hang
Ten', public posting of the Ten Commandments, in my
hometown news. I have seen some good support, and also
some opposing views whose beliefs are obviously
anti-Christian. What concerns me more are those who
claim to believe in God, yet oppose this initiative.

Here are some negative examples that I would
appreciate input about:

1-the writer interprets "...give to Caesar what is
Caesar's, and give to God what is God's" as proof that
religion should be separate, and not be "imposed" in
public life.
(Clearly, that is not what Jesus meant.)
2-the writer claims that "proper parenting, rather
than a poster would help to stop school violence".
(He never explains what influences are necessary for
"proper parenting".)
3-the writer claims that she and others pray at
school, after hours, due to the 'separation' clause in
our Constitution. If others ask them about their
faith, then they share their beliefs. That is fine
with her. She doesn't want to 'impose' her beliefs
upon others, and doesn't think it appropriate for the
Ten Commandments to be imposed upon the public.
(What about those who receive no positive influence
after school hours? We've already seen the results of
that.)
