The revival of Sodom and Gomorrah

Visitors to Sdom will soon have a choice between hedonism and history as
the area gears up for luxury hotels and a museum on early Zionist efforts to
harness Dead Sea potash

The timing was coincidental but symbolic: The same week that the southern
district commission discussed a plan to create a new hotel area with
thousands of rooms on the shores of the Dead Sea, a plan to restore the old
workers' camp in Sdom and build a tourist attraction at the site was
presented to the public. The camp, which before the state's establishment
housed employees of the potash plant, is to be turned into an open museum
that, "will give visitors a feel of the hard work and difficult living conditions of
the place in the 30s and 40s," according to the restoration plan. Presented
last week at a study day in Sdom, the plan calls for a camp that will provide
sound-and-light shows and use a range of methods to tell the story of the
establishment of the factory and attempts to settle the Dead Sea valley. The
first stage of the restoration project will be completed in a few months.At first
glance, there is a great contradiction between the two projects. The hotels
plan represents development and hedonism, while the camp plan represents
conservation and a life of near-total asceticism. In effect, however, they are
two sides of the same coin. They both involve changing the laws of nature,
human intervention in an ancient landscape, conquest of the wilderness and
the exploitation of natural resources for man's needs and comforts - or
profits.

The establishment of a tourist attraction on the site of the workers' camp is a
closing of the circle in a way, ironic or heroic depending on your perspective.
The workers' camp and the potash plant are an obvious Zionist symbol. They
combine utopian ambition, a struggle against cruel natural forces, pioneering
and the energetic actions against all odds by a group of passionate
individuals, of the sort that every Zionist story must contain.

Baby Abandonment Could Be
Legalized in Colorado

-- Abandoning a newborn baby could be made legal
in Colorado.

               The state House tentatively approved a bill Tuesday allowing
               parents to leave babies up to three days old at fire stations
               and hospitals.

Opponents say it legitimizes a morally repugnant practice.

               But the bill's sponsor, Republican Gayle Berry, says it will
               save the lives of babies at risk of being thrown into dumpsters
               and trashcans.

In what may be a first for the UFO disclosure
movement, the State of Missouri has approved a
ballot initiative to crack government secrecy. The
Missouri secretary of state has certified ballot
petition language that would ask voter approval of
a proclamation to urge congressional action for
"ending the government cover up of the UFO
experience."

Organizers of the Missouri initiative, the local
affiliate of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), say
they have until May 7 to gather 75,000 signatures
to place the question on the fall general election
ballot. Bruce Widaman, who's spearheading the
effort, termed it " a grassroots means for
empowering the voters to legislate statutory
change." To meet the state's May 7 deadlines, he
said, " we have to round up at least 500
signature-gathering volunteers."

The group is setting up a donations banking
account at MUFON headquarters in Texas
(http://www.mufon.com) to help support the
project. Missouri is one of 16 states with a full
initiative process. Wideman said the group hopes
that other states will follow Missouri's lead in what
he called "the Year of UFO Awareness." The other
15 states that could send a stronger message to
Congress through the initiative process, he said,
are Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California,
Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, North
Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah,
Washington, and Wyoming.

The MUFON Network's George Filer reported
Tuesday that numerous UFO researchers
worldwide view this initiative as a formal means for
gaining (and expressing) the sense of the
electorate on a vital public issue: "If indeed the
Earth is being visited by alien spacecraft, then we
have a right to know and the government has the
duty to tell," Widaman said.

Killer bees attack

An elderly woman is fighting for her life after being stung more than
500 times by a swarm of killer bees in the south-western United
States.

Between 30,000 to 40,000 bees attacked the 77-year-old woman as she
walked past their hive near her home in Las Vegas. The woman was stung
on her arms, chest, face and head. Eyewitnesses heard her screaming
and called the rescue services.

Firefighters drove an estimated 200 bees from her body by dousing the
woman with water. Two men were also stung as they tried to rescue the
woman.

A fire brigade spokesman said the woman was in shock by the time they
arrived and was admitted to hospital, where staff used tweezers and
duct tape to pull the stings from her body.

It is thought the bees had been attracted to something in her bag.

The journey north

Experts say the bees were Africanised honey bees - more commonly known
as killer bees. The African bees were originally brought to South
America from southern Africa in 1956.

They were crossbred with European bees to improve their tropical
hardiness, but some escaped from the laboratory a year later, and
began to migrate north.

This type of bee has killed an estimated 1,000 people on their
journey, colonising ever greater areas of Central America, Mexico and
California.

To the naked eye, the Africanised bee looks the same as the European
honey bee, and individually, their venom is no more potent.

But the Africanised bees' sting in greater numbers, are more easily
agitated, and are not intimidated by people. They are also more
defensive in reacting against perceived threats to their hives, and
will fly up to a kilometre (half a mile) in pursuit of a target.

GENEVA -- Cases of drug-resistant tuberculosis have dramatically risen
worldwide, according to a World Health Organization report released
Friday.
Denmark and Germany have seen a 50 percent increase in resistant
tuberculosis since 1996, and in New Zealand cases have doubled.
Increases
have been reported in China, India, Iran, Mozambique, Russia, Israel,
Italy
and Mexico. The report also suggests that an increase in
drug-resistant
cases in developing countries does impact wealthier nations. "Our
biggest
worry is that drug-resistant TB will also begin increasing in other
developing countries. North America and Europe may have the billions
of
dollars required to contain this emergency. The worst-affected
countries in
Asia, Africa and Latin America do not," said Dr. David Heymann, WHO's
executive director of communicable diseases, in a statement. The WHO
report, the second on drug-resistant TB, is based on data from 72
countries
and regions, according to Fox News. "We suspected that drug
resistance was
worsening in many parts of the world when we compiled the first
report in
1997," said Marcos Espinal, who headed the report's team. "This report
confirms our worst fears." Officials from 20 countries meeting Friday
in
Amsterdam are expected to announce a program that will fight
drug-resistant
TB in the worst-affected countries, reported Jack van Impe
Ministries. WHO
and the World Bank called the meeting with ministers of health,
finance and
planning from countries with the largest number of TB patients, and
officials from UNICEF, UNAIDS and other development agencies.

QUITO, Ecuador -- About 100,000 people have been infected by an
outbreak of
malaria in this nation, health officials said Monday. "There are about
100,000 cases of malaria, when normally this time of year there
should be
no more than 20,000," said Health Minister Fernando Bustamente.
Authorities
say that if the vast majority of people infected receive proper
treatment
they will not be at risk of dying. An increase in breeding sites for
mosquitoes carrying the disease has been blamed for the greater
number of
people being infected. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water and recent
heavy
rains have increased the amount of pooled water.

Sudan -- There are more than 100,000 Sudanese being held in slavery
in this
country and a group called Christian Solidarity International is
working to
change that. Recently the group paid $35 per person and bought 5,000
people
out of slavery. Since 1995 it has freed more than 30,000 slaves. Most
of
the slaves were Christians and animists that Muslim troops took
captive
during raids on their villages. "The raids are one of the [National
Islamic
Front's] most devastating instruments of the declared jihad [holy
war],
which it is waging against ethnic and religious minorities that
resist its
policies of forced Islamization and Arabization," the group said.
