1. MASS DEMONSTRATION FOR JERUSALEM AND YESHA
Preparations are underway for a mass demonstration this coming Monday night
in Jerusalem on behalf of Judea/Samaria and Jerusalem. Interior Minister
Natan Sharansky, Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert, and other public figures will
address the demonstrators on the issues of the integrity of Jerusalem, the
danger to the nation's unity caused by the uprooting of settlements, and
the futility of unrequited withdrawals from Judea and Samaria.

The police-authorized rally, which is being sponsored and organized by the
Yesha Council and other extra-parliamentary groups, is being billed as "the
first demonstration of Yesha residents since the election of Ehud Barak as
Prime Minister." Beit El Mayor and Yesha Council member Uri Ariel,
exhorting his constituents to attend, wrote today, "Demonstrations and
rallies are an important contribution in the campaign to win over public
opinion in our country. We recall how the massive pro-Golan demonstration
four months ago represented a turning-point [in the negotiations over the
Golan giveaway]... Everyone is asked to do his utmost to attend..."

2. CALLS OF SUPPORT
Rabbis Eliyahu, Shapira, Druckman, Melamed, Rabinovitch, Drori, Aviner,
Lior and others have called on the public to attend Monday night's rally.
Their declaration states,
"The rights and obligations of the Nation of Israel to the Land of Israel
are eternal, and no element has the authority to nullify the Jewish
nation's right over any part of Eretz Yisrael. In these days, when we hear
words of weakness and the desire to give away parts of Eretz Yisrael and
Jerusalem, we call on everyone to take part in [the rally], in order to
strengthen the Jewish settlement presence in Yesha and Jerusalem! We must
be strong on behalf of the nation and the cities of our G-d, and may we see
the fulfillment of the prophecy, 'I will plant them on their land and they
will never again be uprooted from their land.'"

Other bodies that have expressed strong objections to Barak's desire to
give away Abu Dis and other Jerusalem-area villages include the National
Council of Young, which wrote to Barak this week, "We wish to express our
very great fears over the fate of Yerushalayim... While transfer of these
areas, which are just outside the city's borders, might not violate the
letter of [your] campaign promises [to retain Jerusalem as the eternal
undivided capital of Israel], they certainly contradict their spirit in
several ways..."

At around the same time as the Jerusalem rally, a similar demonstration of
solidarity will be held in New York, with the same themes: "Uprooting
settlements tears the nation apart!" and "No Withdrawals from Yesha, the
Golan, or Jerusalem!" The demonstration, organized by Americans For A Safe
Israel, will take place at 6 PM on Monday, at 13th Ave. and 46th St. in
Brooklyn.

3. NEW P.A. DEMAND: MORE TERRORIST RELEASES
The Israeli and Palestinian negotiating delegations will meet on Sunday to
discuss a new demand by the latter for the release of an additional 250
imprisoned Arab terrorists. According to the agreements, Israel is not
required to release any more terrorists until the achievement of a
final-status agreement.

4. IN LEBANON
A Southern Lebanese Army soldier was killed early this morning by Hizbullah
fire in the western sector of the security zone in southern Lebanon.
Another soldier was moderately wounded in the attack on the SLA outpost.

Prime Minister Ehud Barak stated yesterday that Israel's planned withdrawal
from Lebanon would be carried out with or without United Nations support.
He made the remarks at IDF Northern Command headquarters just as his
Foreign Minister David Levy was preparing to depart for a meeting on the
topic with UN Secretary-General Kofi Anan in New York. Anan and Levy will
meet today.

5. GOLAN-YESHA LAW DEBATE
The Knesset Law Committee will hold its first session on MK Silvan Shalom's
Golan-Yesha referendum law. The bill stipulates that a majority of
registered voters - and not merely a regular majority - would have to
approve the transfer of territories in the Golan, Judea and Samaria in
order for it to occur. A preliminary reading of Shalom's bill passed in
the Knesset several weeks ago, to the surprised dismay of Prime Minister
Barak.

6. INDEPENDENCE DAY SURPRISE FOR LONE SOLDIER
IDF soldier Julia Broda was just one of 130 top soldiers honored at the
President's Residence on Independence Day - but it's doubtful if she
remembers any of the others. A "lone soldier," her family still lives in
Russia, while she "paves the way" for their arrival. IsraelWire reports
that when her name was called on Wednesday during the ceremony, she went up
to the podium to receive her award, and was greeted not only by President
Ezer Weizman and Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Sha'ul Mofaz - but also by her
parents and brother! They had been flown in from Russia without her
knowledge, in a surprise organized by the LIBI organization, the IDF Home
Front Command, and the Foreign Ministry.

7. FROM ZION SHALL GO FORTH AGRICULTURAL EXPERTISE
A delegation of Israeli agricultural experts, led by Hebrew University
Professor Yona Chen, recently returned from a week-long visit to North
Carolina, where they studied the extensive agricultural and environmental
damage caused there last fall by Hurricane Floyd. The group was invited by
North Carolina Governor James Hunt. Upon their return, the Israeli experts
drafted a program of recommendations for cooperation between economic,
scientific and public bodies in Israel and North Carolina to deal with
problems such as soil erosion, water pollution and fertilization.

Holy Hunks of Junk, It's Raining Boosters!

By Leonard David
Senior Space Writer
10 May 2000

WASHINGTON -- The remains of rockets are raining from space, hitting
Earth with disturbing frequency.

While no one yet has been killed or seriously hurt, scientists say
the risk of injury is greater, as more and more pieces reach the
ground.

Through the years, the space business has seen some spectacular falls
from grace.

Whole chunks of Skylab fell over Western Australia in July 1979. And
NASA is preparing to bring the school-bus sized Compton Gamma-Ray
Observatory into a "controlled" reentry into the eastern Pacific
Ocean early next month.

But scientists are most worried about space junk that hits land.

Late last month, the skies over Cape Town, South Africa, thundered
with sonic booms as white-hot pieces of metal slammed to the ground
around several farms.

Eyewitnesses to the late-afternoon plunge from space on April 27
heard and watched the fragments come down. Not surprisingly, the
incident touched off rumors of an out-of-control UFO or a fallen
aircraft.

U.S. space-debris experts have now identified the more than 700
pounds (318 kilograms) of space junk that fell that day as the
remains of a Delta 2 second stage.

Seals can infect humans with flu

BY NIGEL HAWKES

http://www.the-times.co.uk/ & INDEX

SEALS can catch flu and may also be able to pass it on to humans who
come into contact with them, scientists have found.

The discovery, made by Dutch teams from the department of virology at
Erasmus University, Rotterdam, and the Seal Rehabilitation Centre at
Pieterburen, came as a surprise to the experts.

They were treating 12 juvenile harbour seals that had been stranded
on the coast of The Netherlands last spring when tests for the
influenza B virus proved positive.

Although influenza A has been found in many species and influenza C
in humans and pigs, the B variety was believed to be restricted to
humans.

Further analysis showed that the virus was identical to one that had
caused human infections in The Netherlands in 1995. The seals had
somehow caught the disease from humans in 1995 and it had been
circulating ever since.

Subject: [BPR] - John Paul to Entrust Third Millennium To Our Lady of Fatima

Lady of Fatima was established to spread the message of Fatima. It is
an official Catholic organization, recognized by the Vatican."]

John Paul to Entrust Third Millennium To Our Lady of Fatima

http://www.bluearmy.com/johnpaulthirdmillenniumtoourlady.htm

Pope John Paul II will entrust the Third Millennium to Our Lady of
Fatima on October 8 according to a March 22 statement by Secretary
General of the Vatican Jubilee Committee Archbishop Crescenzio Sepe.
The statue of Our Lady of Fatima from the Chapel of the Apparitions
at the Fatima sanctuary in Portugal will be brought to St. Peter's
Basilica in Rome for the special event. Bishops from around who will
be in Rome for the Jubilee Year are expected to participate in the
entrustment that will be made at the end of an October 8 Mass in St.
Peter's Basilica.

Archbishop Sepe said on Vatican Radio that he thought the presence of
the statue of Our Lady of Fatima in St. Peter's and the entrustment
ceremony "will be one of the most moving Marian events of the whole
Jubilee." The archbishop noted that the statue will arrive in Rome a
few days before the ceremony "so that all the faithful who wish to
venerate her may be able to do so," he said.

Archbishop Sepe confirmed that Pope John Paul had accepted the Bishop
of Leiria-Fatima's invitation to beatify Venerables Jacinta and
Francisco Marto at the Fatima sanctuary on May 13.

The Words of Our Lady of Fatima, May 13, 1917

"Do not be afraid. I will do you no harm."

"I am from heaven."

"I have come to ask you to come here for six months in succession, on
the 13th day, at this same hour. Later on, I will tell you who I am
and what I want. Afterwards, I will return here yet a seventh time."

"Are you willing to offer yourselves to God and bear all the
sufferings He wills to send you, as an act of reparation for the sins
by which He is offended, and of supplication for the conversion of
sinners? . . . Then you are going to have much to suffer, but the
grace of God will be your comfort."

"Pray the Rosary every day, in order to obtain peace for the world,
and the end of war."

Words of Our Lady of Fatima, June 13, 1917

"I wish you to come here on the 13th of the next month, to pray the
Rosary every day and to learn to read. Later, I will tell you what I
want." Lucia asked for the cure of a sick person.

"If he is converted, he will be cured during the year."

Lucia asked Mary to take them to heaven.

"Yes, I will take Jacinta and Francisco soon. But you are to stay
here some time longer. Jesus wishes to make use of you to make me
known and loved. He wants to establish in the world devotion to my
Immaculate Heart."

Lucia asked if she was going to remain alone.

"No, my daughter. Are you suffering a great deal? Don't lose heart. I
will never forsake you. My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and
the way that will lead you to God."

The Words of Our Lady of Fatima, July 13, 1917

"I want you to come here on the 13th of next month, to continue to
pray the Rosary every day in honour of our Lady of the Rosary, in
order to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war, because
only she can help you."

"Continue to come here every month. In October, I will tell you who I
am and what I want, and I will perform a miracle for all to see and
believe."

"Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially
whenever you make some sacrifice: O Jesus, it is for love of You, for
the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed
against the Immaculate Heart of Mary."

Our Lady showed hell to the children. <hell.html>

"You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them,
God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart.
If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will
be peace. The war is going to end: but if people do not cease
offending God, a worse one will break out during the pontificate of
Pius XI. When you see a night illumined by an unknown light, know
that this is the great sign given you by God that He is about to
punish the world for its crimes, by means of war, famine, and
persecutions of the Church and of the Holy Father.

"To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia
to my Immaculate Heart, and the communion of Reparation on the First
Saturdays. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted and
there will be peace; if not, she will spread her errors throughout
the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will
be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer, various
nations will be annihilated . . . [At this point, our Lady revealed
what has become known as the third part of the Fatima secret.] In the
end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will
consecrate Russia to me, and she will be converted, and a period of
peace will be granted to the world. In Portugal, the dogma of the
Faith will always be preserved. Do not tell this to anybody.
Francisco, yes, you may tell him."

"When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus,
forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven,
especially those who are most in need."

The Words of Our Lady of Fatima, August 19, 1917

"I want you to continue going to the Cova da Iria on the 13th, and to
continue praying the Rosary every day. In the last month, I will
perform a miracle so that all may believe."

Lucia asked what to do with the money that people were leaving.

"Have two litters made. One is to be carried by you and Jacinta and
two other girls dressed in white: the other one is to be carried by
Francisco and three other boys. The money from the litters is for the
"festa" of Our Lady of the Rosary, and what is left over will help
towards the construction of a chapel that is to be built here."

Lucia asked for Our Lady to cure some people.

"Yes, I will cure some of them during the year."

"Pray, pray very much, and make sacrifices for sinners: for many
souls go to hell because there are none to sacrifice themselves and
to pray for them."

The Words of Our Lady of Fatima, September 13, 1917

"Continue to pray the Rosary in order to obtain the end of the war.
In October Our Lord will come, as well as Our Lady of Dolors and Our
Lady of Carmel. Saint Joseph will appear with the Child Jesus to
bless the world. God is pleased with your sacrifices. He does not
want you to sleep with the rope on, but only to wear it during the
daytime."

Lucia asked for the cure of some people.

"Yes, I will cure some, but not others. In October I will perform a
miracle so that all may believe."

The Words of Our Lady of Fatima, October 13, 1917

"I want to tell you that a chapel is to be built here in my honor. I
am the Lady of the Rosary. Continue always to pray the Rosary every
day. The war is going to end, and the soldiers will soon return to
their homes."

Lucia asked for the cure and conversions of some people.

"Some yes, but not others. They must amend their lives and ask
forgiveness for their sins."

"Do not offend the Lord our God any more, because He is already so
much offended." [After this statement, the Miracle of the Sun
ocurred.]

(The above text was taken from the book,Fatima, in Lucia's Own Words
<books.html> which was written by Sister Lucia, one of the three
shepherd children to whom Our Lady appeared at Fatima, in 1917.)

Thursday, 11 May, 2000, 18:14 GMT 19:14 UK Drought raises food fears

Drought is now affecting many parts of the Middle East Severe drought is beginning to affect many parts of the Middle East including Iran, Iraq and Jordan.

Rainfall in parts of Iran is down by 25% on last year with 18 of the country's 28 provinces suffering.

In Iraq, the Tigris and Euphrates rivers have fallen to around 20% of their average flow, with serious consequences for irrigated farming.

Jordan's agricultural production has been severely damaged by two years of drought.

All three countries were already suffering the consequences of prolonged water shortages dating from last year.

The figures came in a special report from the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation.

It says the scarcity of food and water, already affecting many countries in South Asia, is causing mounting concern as it claims a growing number of lives.

The government in Iran has recently approved an emergency aid package for farmers while several international organisations are visiting Iraq to assess the food supply situation there.

Jordan is currently benefiting from international food aid which began in July 1999.

WHAT THE BOY SAID TO EHUD AND YOSSI
by Gur-Aryeh Ben-Avraham

In This Article:
  1. What We Didn't Pray For
  2. The Pestering Lad
  3. Jerusalem - Because of the Temple Mount

WHAT WE DIDN'T PRAY FOR
Over the last few weeks we've been hearing Israel's government ministers
repeating, almost incessantly, a now-familiar mantra. This mantra was
carefully crafted in strategic meetings held by the Prime Minister and his
aides. Government media advisors surely gave the go-ahead. "This will work
just great!" they probably told their bosses. Here it is:

"When we prayed for 2,000 years, 'If I forget thee O Jerusalem,'" Barak,
Ben-Ami and Ben-Eliezer declare, "we weren't praying to Abu Dis,
El-Azariya, or Anata!"

This tells us several things. First of all, we see that our illustrious
leaders include themselves among the ranks of other Jewish worshippers -
with those who have prayed to G-d thrice daily for nearly 2,000 years.
This is nice, and even impressive. Until now, many had been skeptical as
to the devoutness of the leaders of the State of Israel. Maybe we had been
unfair in assuming that they were ignorant of the format of a Siddur
[prayer book]. So there is yet hope...

In any event, we see that Ehud [Barak] and Shlomo [Ben-Ami] and Yossi
[Beilin] and Yossi [Sarid] all seem to know what our ancestors did not pray
for: Abu Dis. It's because our forefathers did not pray for Abu Dis, they
feel, that it is permissible, and maybe even laudable, to transfer this
village to the control of the PLO - the organization that aims to liberate
the entirety of "Palestine" from the Jewish people, from the Mediterranean
Sea to the Jordan River, with Jerusalem as its capital.

"Why should we forfeit Abu Dis?" many ask. "Well," our leaders respond,
"Arabs are living there anyway, and Israel is not really in control there
in practice, so what difference does it make?..."

THE PESTERING LAD
Let's imagine the following scene: a spontaneous conversation between a
Jewish youngster, on the one hand, and Prime Minister Barak and Justice
Minister Beilin, on the other:

Young Lad: How is it that we have come to the point where the State of
Israel has no control over its own capital city, in all of the
Arab-populated neighborhoods? Was this destined to be? Was it really
impossible to fight the war such that the Jerusalem would have been
relieved of her enemies?"

Ehud and Yossi: Shh, child, be quiet... Go play outside!

But the child is stubborn, and refuses to be banished.
Lad: I want to know what our ancestors did pray for, and not for what they
didn't!
Ehud and Yossi: They prayed for peace.

Lad: But you said that they didn't pray "for Abu Dis." You did not say
"they didn't pray for war."
Ehud and Yossi: This kid is getting wise... OK, they prayed for Jerusalem.

Lad: So, where's Jerusalem? Does it end exactly where somebody runs a
pencil and sketches a line?
Ehud and Yossi: Jerusalem is where Jews live.

Lad: Really? OK, but the Jews came to live there for a reason, no? Because,
if not, what's the difference between Jerusalem and Ramat HaSharon?
Ehud and Yossi: Maybe you'll stop pestering us, kid?

JERUSALEM - BECAUSE OF THE TEMPLE MOUNT
Lad: No, I won't stop. And if you won't give me an answer to my question,
I would like to propose my own answer: The Jews prayed for so many
generations explicitly, specifically, to build the holy Temple on the
Temple Mount. Jerusalem is so important to the Jews only because the
Temple Mount is located there! So now, it's not enough that you allowed
the Arabs to live so close to the Temple Mount - you want them to rule
there, too? Don't you understand that from there, they plan to proceed to
the Temple Mount, brandishing their flag that symbolizes their desire to
banish us from the entire land?

Ehud to Yossi (smiling nervously): Yossi, be careful. Hide that paper that
you wrote up with Abu-what's-his-face, at this rate, this little
whipper-snapper may actually find it....

Lad: No, Yossi, there's no reason to hide it; your deal is already
well-known. Even I understand: You yourselves want to forfeit the Mount to
them, and Abu-Dis is just an "advance." But you don't tell this to
everyone, you don't announce it too loudly, because you want to pull the
carpet out from underneath us little by little, so that your government
won't suddenly fall apart.

Ehud and Yossi: (angrily) [expletive deleted]!

Lad (not hearing their comments): I'll tell you even more. You want to
give them the Temple Mount because you yourselves don't know why the Mount
is so important. You remind me of the story my teacher once told me about
a ship that nearly sunk in a storm. The ship's captains told the
passengers, including the Jews, to throw something overboard to lighten the
boat's load. One Jew got up right away and threw his Tefilin
(phylacteries) and Tallit (prayer shawl) overboard...
Anyway, I'm telling you - are you listening? - that it's the Temple Mount,
and not Givat Ram or Beit HaKerem [Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem], that
Jews prayed for throughout the generations. After the Temple Mount was
returned to your possession 33 years ago, how do you respond to a Jew who
wishes to pray there, as his great-great-great grandfather did? Huh? I'll
tell you how: I saw a picture in the papers that showed policemen dragging
him off the Mount, and it says that he was tried in court for his "crime."
Is this right? What, is he a criminal? The Arabs, who took the Mount from
us, pray there, and you don't do anything to them!

Ehud to Yossi (gets up, brushes off his trousers, straightens his tie):
Come, Yossi, he doesn't want to leave, so we'll leave... let him rant and
rave forever, for all I care...

Lad (following them outside): No, I haven't finished yet! Listen, I'm
telling you that this whole Abu-Dis issue, along with your rejection of the
Temple Mount - is all part of one package! If we have no business in Abu
Dis - because we never prayed for Abu Dis - and the Temple Mount is no
longer in our hands - then we really have no business being in this land,
period!! We could have also gone to Uganda. The bottom line for you guys
is that we be allowed to live in peace and quiet. Maybe there, in Uganda,
you wouldn't have had to deal with Arafat, make deals with him, and so
on... By the way, I heard that Herzl himself preferred Uganda...

Ehud and Yossi: Don't you tell us what Herzl did and didn't want!

Lad: Then you, too - stop telling the Jewish people fairy tales about what
our ancestors did and did not pray for...

Ehud (waving his hand in dismissal, turns to Yossi with a change of
subject): I heard that you're planning a trip to America... If you could,
I'd like to ask you to stick around. You see, I'm having some coalition
problems...

Putin holds talks with Ted Turner

United Press International - May 11, 2000 13:28

MOSCOW, May 11 (UPI) -- Ted Turner, founder of the world's first 24-hour news channel, Cable News Network, and vice chairman of Time-Warner Inc., notched a new first Thursday, becoming the first western businessman to hold private talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Putin and Turner discussed a range of subjects, including sports and nuclear disarmament.

The two men met six years ago when Putin was deputy mayor of St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city, and host to the Turner-backed Goodwill Games. Turner said he and Putin discussed the possibility of holding the games in Russia again.

The first Goodwill Games were held in Moscow in 1986, after Turner announced that he would seek to create an alternative to the Olympic Games. The Olympics had been hit by a tit-for-tat boycott, with the United States leading the West in a boycott of the Moscow games in 1980 over the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and the Soviet Union leading the socialist states in a retaliatory boycott of the Los Angeles games in 1984, depriving athletes of competition against their strongest opponents.

The Russian leader and the American media mogul also discussed nuclear disarmament, with Turner calling for the scrapping of all nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction.

Media observers said it was likely that Turner was trying to establish a working relationship ahead of a possible investment in Russian media. Turner's CNN got burned on an earlier investment in a Russian television channel, bailing out as operating conditions became difficult.

The meeting took place as armed Russian police raided the offices of Media-Most, the holding company that includes Russia's premier independent television network NTV and Itogi, a weekly newsmagazine published with Newsweek. Some reporters in Moscow noted that Time magazine, a major part of Time-Warner, of which Turner is vice chairman, is Newsweek's main rival.

 Burger King Employees Charged

SCOTTSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - Three teen-age Burger King employees were
charged with putting urine, spit and caustic products like Easy-Off oven
cleaner in the food for eight months.

No injuries or illnesses were reported, the Monroe County Health Department
said.

The restaurant is at a service area along the New York State Thruway.

``To do it for such a long period of time - it's simply bizarre,'' Kristine Smith, a
state Health Department spokeswoman.

Scott B. Savino, 19, an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl were arrested
this week and charged with tampering with a consumer product. The two
younger defendants were not identified because of their ages.

The three were accused of using such cleaning products as Easy-Off, Kote
Soil Shield and Comet with bleach.

They can cause burning or irritation in the mouth and even severe burning of
the stomach or esophagus.
