[Moza and I would like to encourage any of our list members to
participate in reviewing books that we have come across that look
interesting but that we haven't gotten a chance to review ourselves.
Any volunteers willing to purchase the following book (or perhaps
it's available in your local library) and give us your opinion on
it? Or perhaps someone has already read it? Our reviews are not
anything elaborate, so you don't have to be a "writer" to
participate. Just give us your opinion -- what you like or don't
like about the book. We would truly appreciate some people stepping
forward that may be interested in doing something like this. We'll
start posting a few books that we're interested in in the weeks
ahead. If anyone has books that they may be interested in
themselves, please let us know. If you want to volunteer to review a
book, drop Moza or me a message so that we can keep track of what's
being reviewed. Thanks! ]

The Search for Rogue Asteroids and Doomsday Comets
that Threaten Our Planet
by Duncan Steel
Paperback; 160 pages
November, 2000
Approximate price: $20

This review is from:
http://shopping.readersdigest.com/rdsah/

An authoritative author presents a fascinating account of rogue
asteroids and doomsday comets that threaten life on earth.
Enlightening information based on real scientific fact - a compelling
read! Filled with spectacular photography. Afterword written by Sir
Arthur C. Clarke.

Will civilization as we know it come to a halting end? TARGET EARTH
answers the key questions raised by the likelihood of a cosmic impact
and reveals the untold story of the extraordinary men and women who
are taking bold steps to divert a catastrophic tragedy.

The threat of an asteroid crashing into Earth - is it science fact or
fiction? Could the events in the recent movie Armageddon become
reality? Is it possible to shield the Earth from deadly cosmic
debris? Is the Caspian Sea a gigantic ancient impact crater?

TARGET EARTH presents a thought-provoking and chilling scenario of
(literally) Earth-shattering importance: Our planet travels in an
orbit swarming with rocky and icy asteroids and comets. It's only a
matter of time before one of the hundreds of known near-Earth objects
remains directly in our path. And the results could be disastrous.
Did you know that the impact of a small asteroid - only a hundred
yards wide - would be more destructive than the detonation of 100
hydrogen bombs? Soot and charcoal in the Earth's geological layers
prove that such a catastrophe occurred in the past - and explains the
extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

Filled with spectacular pictures, TARGET EARTH explains what cosmic
impacts are, what causes them, how often they occur, the nature of
their consequences, and why we should be worried about them. It
delves into:

=95 The evidence of previous impacts, both on the Earth itself and on
other celestial bodies

=95 The search strategies for detecting earth-crossing asteroids and
comets

=95 The intricacies of predicting when and if impact will occur

=95 The "economics of Armageddon" - the tremendous cost in human deaths
and property damage the crash of a large asteroid would cause - no
matter where on Earth it landed.

Subject: [BiblicalProphecy] Dr. Ed DeVries' report from Indianapolis Baptist Temple

My report from Indianapolis Baptist Temple
By Dr Edward R. DeVries

Also see: http://www.indianapolisbaptisttemple.com/index2.html

I have spent the last week at Indianapolis Baptist Temple. If you have
not heard, this church is currently under siege. At this moment
Federal Marshals are planning to raid, seize, and STEAL this church.

In the following pages I will attempt to tell the story in
chronological order. Of course, I cannot come close to telling the
"whole" story. But I hope to at least hit the highlights as I
summarize MY week at the Baptist Temple.

On Thursday November 16 I received a 3 word E-mail from Dr. Greg J.
Dixon, Pastor Emeritus of the Indianapolis Baptist Temple. The three
words were "COME HELP US."

I called Dr. Dixon that evening and left a message on his voice mail.
At about 6 A.M. the next morning he returned my call and asked me to
drive to Indianapolis.

I arrived in Indianapolis the next day to find the church "under
siege."

Federal Judge Sarah Evans Barker, Chief Judge of the Southern
District, Indianapolis had ordered U.S. Marshals to seize the church
building, Christian School, and all other properties of the
Indianapolis Baptist Temple (IBT). Church members and other IBT
supporters were literally camped out throughout the building in
defiance of Judge Barker's order.

When I arrived there was a yellow-tape "perimeter line" than had been
broken and the tape wadded up, dozens of media vehicles were there and
several had the long-pole satellite uplinks blinking. News cameras and
reporters were all over the place. The ladies of the church were
serving dinner in the Fellowship Hall. Dr. Dixon was being interviewed
live on a talk-radio call-in show.

There were about 300 church members, and about 200 other "supporters"
consisting of members of various Patriot Groups, Militia members, and
Indianapolis residents who had heard about the situation and had come
to show support for the church. All in all there were at least 500 in
the building. There were also a few folks there who had heard the
story on the radio and had come in from out of town. Sadly, there were
only about a dozen preachers.

After my travel companion, Pastor Tim Gresham of Rose-Rich Baptist
Church in Rosenberg, Texas, and I had walked around and basically
sized up the situation a church member asked me to come to Dr. Dixon's
office.

He had just finished his radio broadcast and was told I had arrived.
Mrs. Dixon brought some food in from the fellowship hall and Dr. Dixon
and I ate dinner together in his office, talked, and he updated me as
to where the church was in its battle.

At high noon on Tuesday the Marshals seized Dr. Dixon's home and
shortly thereafter they came to seize the church property but decided
to postpone their raid because 800+ members of IBT were in the
building praying. They decided to wait until the members left. Only
the members had resolved to stay.

James "Bo" Gritz, a militia and patriot leader had heard of their
stand and came to the church. He set up his broadcasting equipment and
began broadcasting from IBT over short-wave. As word of the siege made
its way across the country via short-wave people from all over America
began to show up.

On Wednesday, enough Militia members had arrived for Bo, a highly
decorated former Green Beret, to set up a security team, perimeter
guard, and alarm system. But he did NOT create a "compound." The
members and other supporters came and went as they pleased, the media
was free to come and go, and Federal Agents even came and went.

The "guards" were not armed. The security team was set up for 2
reasons. 1- so the occupants of the building would not be taken "by
surprise" during the Marshal's raid and 2- to make sure that nobody on
the inside was hurt by a "supporter" who may not have really been a
supporter.

There had been a few gang members, punks, and just plain idiots who
had come to the church to start trouble and Bo's security team was
able to show them the door.

Basically, everyone was waiting. Waiting for the Marshals to come.
There was no plan to resist the Marshals when they arrived. But many
had determined they would be carried out - in other words, they would
not walk out voluntarily.

All utilities were still on in the buildings, showers were available
in the gymnasium, and members and community members were bringing in
food. Services were being held daily at 3 p.m., 7 p.m., and 11 p.m.

On Saturday I was introduced to Pastor Aubrey Vaughan. Pastor
Vaughan's church is less than an hour from me and I had never met him.
I also met John Brown, an Indiana preacher who I had known for some
time via E-mail but had never met in person.

Sunday morning about 1,700 people defied a federal court order and
entered the church for worship. Pastor Greg A. Dixon preached from
Ephesians 6. "Having Done All - STAND." He said "This is not a
'sit-in,' a 'stand-off,' a 'protest,' or a 'show-down,' This is a
Stand!" He made a statement that he repeated often in interviews with
the press, "This property belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ. As His
church we will not leave it voluntarily. If the U.S. government wants
the Lord's property they will have to desecrate the sanctuary of God
and drag his people from the alter to do it. . . . If they want to be
immoral and unconstitutional let them come and desecrate the House of
God. God will judge them, their families, their wives, their children,
and their political careers. But if they want to be moral and
constitutional, they will respect the House of God. The choice is
theirs. Either way we will stand."

Sunday evening Pastor Dixon asked me to preach the evening service.
About 900 were there and I took my text from I Samuel 14:6. My Title
was "It May Be."

Several were saved and baptized during the Sunday services. Several
joined the church.

Sunday evening Pastor Dixon announced that since the Marshals hadn't
come yet that the church was going on the offensive.

On Monday afternoon Bo Gritz left and the Militia followed him. By
Monday evening all that was left were church members, a few out of
town preachers, and some families who had traveled to be with the
church members and show their support. The number was about 400.

But in spite of this, at Dr. Dixon's lead, the church went on the
offensive.

MONDAY NOV. 20th Church members picketed the Federal Courthouse, Judge
Barker's home, and both companies assigned as "receivers" for the
church's properties.

Aubrey Vaughan and I set up a telemarketing room. 6 volunteers called
churches all over the country to raise support. They also called every
church in the Indianapolis phone book.

An Internet site was set up, and members went all over Indianapolis
with a petition.

Federal Guidelines determined that a raid of the church would require
at least 300 agents. But there were only 22 Marshals in Indianapolis.
So they asked for assistance from the Indianapolis Police, The State
Highway Patrol, and the County Sheriff's office. The Indianapolis
Police, State Police, and Sheriff's Department all said that they
would NOT participate in the raid. So the Marshals began brought in a
Special Operations Group (SOG). SOG is a special team of Interpol
police that are used in terrorist and hostage situations. This was
going to be another Waco.

Since the Militia left we preachers set up a security team. I even
walked perimeter guard Monday night in the snow.

At about Midnight a few walked to the platform of the auditorium and
began to sing. Others joined them and their number quickly grew to
about 20. The "Midnight Choir" was formed.

TEUSDAY

While visiting at the capitol building Attorney Cunningham was
informed that the SOG unit would strike Tuesday evening. So the church
called a press conference - easy enough since all the media was
already camped out in the church.

Dr. Dixon made it clear that there were no weapons in the building. He
stated his outrage that the Federal Government was going to bring in
an international police force trained in terrorist warfare to kill
little old ladies, women, and children who simply wanted to take a
stand in/for their church. The media jumped on it and head Marshal
Anderson responded by saying there would be no SOG operation.

Of course, Federal Agents had been coming and going and so they knew
there were no weapons, simply a lot of people.

The decision was made to update the website daily.

WEDNESDAY

Wednesday Pastor Gresham went to picket the office of Atlantic
Receivers. He decided to confront someone in the building. He went to
their suite and found it was nothing more than a 2 lawyer law firm.
They actually told him that they created Atlantic specifically to
handle IBT and that it was a paper corporation.

I worked with the IBT webmaster to get the petition online and to
create a link whereby surfers could E-mail key elected officials in
Indiana and around the country.

All of the preachers called media outlets around the nation asking
them to interview Dr. Dixon or Pastor Dixon. Both carried cell phones
activated especially for media to contact them for interviews.

Pastor Jim Leonard and I set up an "Internet Room" with old computers
donated by members. Since the marshals could seize the machines only
OLD ones were donated. I was amazed when Pastor Leonard got WIN 98 to
run on a 486 SX machine (It was the only operating system we had disks
for). This enabled those in the building to check their E-mail and
also to E-mail folks in order to gain additional support.

A brother whose name I forgot who was the #2 man nationally in
Operation Rescue (he currently has a $6,000,000 judgment against him
from a lawsuit he lost to planned parenthood) used the Internet room
to E-mail his whole mailing list of Thousands.

THURSDAY

Thursday morning Channel 6 interviewed Tim and he told what happened
at Atlantic. Judge Barker immediately ordered the receivership to be
given to another firm and an investigation is being launched to
determine why the IRS didn't use a bonded fiduciary (several are
available) instead of a bogus paper corporation. This could lead to a
criminal investigation of IRS agents.

Also on Thursday morning the Indianapolis Star asked Marshal Anderson
when the raid would take place. He said only that the church would be
seized before the end of the year. He said his department was waiting
because they have not yet determined a "right way to do the wrong
thing." He was quoted as saying this in the Indianapolis Star.

So the City, County, and State police have all said that it is wrong
for the government to STEAL a church and now the Marshal agrees with
them.

Pray that Marshal Anderson will take a stand and tell Judge Barker
that they will not enforce her wicked order. FYI - Marshal Anderson is
a deacon in a Baptist Church.

EVERYDAY

Monday through Friday November 20th - 24th Dr. Dixon and IBT attorney
Al Cunningham visited every elected official in the city of
Indianapolis (which is the State Capitol).

Also, every day there were pickets and members circulating petitions.
Myself and the other preachers were interviewed on TV and radio every
day.

We had daily services at 3 p.m., 7 p.m., prayer meeting at 11 p.m.,
and The Midnight Choir sang every night at midnight.

We ate three good meals each day with members and folks from the
community bringing in food. Thanksgiving was a great meal with all the
trimmings.

The weather was cold (snow) some days and warm (low 50's) other days.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

In preparation for the SOG raid a graphic artist in the church made a
sign and it was posted at the front door. It had a yellow and black
background with a 9mm and a ski mask. It read: "NOTICE: Federal
Marshals, Remove Your Ski masks and unload all weapons before entering
the premises." The media had a field day with it.

Someone had t-shirts made that said: "Jesus is Coming - But are the
Marshals?"

Thursday afternoon someone gave Pastor Dixon a couple of tickets to
that nights Indiana Pacer's game and told him that he needed to get
out and have some fun. Since the Marshals hadn't come yet he decided
to go and asked me to go with him. We were seated right behind the
bench so we could hear the coaches call the plays and everything. The
Pacers were smeared but we had fun.

DEPARTURE

When I left Friday at noon there were about 300 in the church. Members
are now taking turns sleeping a night in the church. They then go home
and are replaced by another family.

At least three preachers who came from out of town have associates
running their churches in their absence and will be there for the long
haul. I plan to return at the first of December.

SPIRITUAL VICTORIES

During the week I was there dozens were saved, 15 were baptized, young
men surrendered to preach, and several joined the church.

Several folks saw the story on TV, came to the church, and got right
with God. Several more called the church to ask for prayer.

We even had a sodomite testify that he repented of his sodomy and he
stood with us.

God revived me as I was there. He also revived the church I pastor
because I went.

PERSONAL

Al Cunningham, IBT's attorney who had given me legal advice in the
past helped me to overcome a mistake that I was about to make in our
contract for the Methodist building. He modified the contract and also
helped set me up as a trustee of the church. I enjoyed the fellowship
with Bro. Cunningham throughout the week.

Pastor Dixon and I stayed up the better part of Tuesday night in his
office talking about our churches, church growth, philosophy of
ministry, etc. The church I pastor was revolutionized Tuesday night.

Friday morning Pastor Dixon gave me his office chair. It is a burgundy
high back leather chair. It was Dr. Dixon's chair and he gave it to
Greg A. 4 years ago when he became pastor. Greg A. gave it to me to
put in my office in our new building. I set it in the office today.
It's a "mantle of Elijah" kinda thing. I cannot help but be amazed at
the burden that Pastor Dixon developed for my church (actually, he
decided to help me carry my burden) in the midst of what is going on
in his church.

In the course of a week Dr. Dixon who was my friend became my hero.

HOW YOU CAN HELP IBT:

You can help IBT by E-mailing the various elected officials in the
Indiana government and in Washington. Visit

Plastic chip 'will make most things intelligent'
By Robert Uhlig, Technology Correspondent

BRITISH scientists have developed ultra-cheap plastic microchips that can
be printed almost as easily as a colour magazine.

They say this will enable them to build chips into everyday objects to
make them "intelligent". The chips will be made by spraying tiny globules
of conducting plastics on to almost any material, bringing the prospect of
clothes, and even pieces of paper, having "chips".

Richard Friend, Cavendish Professor of Physics at Cambridge University,
said: "Your yogurt pot will be able to tell you it should have been eaten
a few days ago. It's all about transferring low-level intelligence to
everyday products."

Plastic chips are one of the most eagerly awaited technologies under
development. It is thought that they will revolutionise semiconductors.
Although not as powerful as their silicon counterparts, plastic chips will
be flexible, very thin and thousands of times cheaper to manufacture.

Plastic Logic, a company set up by Prof Friend and his colleague, Dr
Henning Sirringhaus, has developed and patented the technology. Prof
Friend expects commercial products using the technology to be ready in
"about five years".

DUTCH LEGALIZE EUTHANASIA, EVEN FOR MINORS
A 12-Year-Old Would Need at Least One Parent's Consent

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, NOV. 28, 2000 (ZENIT.org).- The Dutch
Parliament
voted today to legalize euthanasia, making the Netherlands the first
country in the world to allow so-called mercy killing.

The bill passed 104-40. It still awaits the approval of the Senate, which
is considered a formality. The law is expected to take effect next year.

The new legislation will allow Dutch doctors to take recourse to
euthanasia under certain conditions. The doctors must ascertain that the
patient is enduring "unbearable sufferings," due to a terminal, medically
diagnosed sickness, and that the patient wants to put an end to his life.

Minors 16 or older will be able to opt for euthanasia without parental
consent. Minors aged 12-16 will have to have consent of at least one
parent.

Under the new law, a patient will be able to make a written request for
euthanasia, giving physicians the right to use their own discretion when
patients become too physically or mentally ill to decide for themselves.
According to CNN, Rita Marker, executive director of the International
Anti-Euthanasia Task Force, said the statute would send a signal "telling
people that if it's legal, it's right."

Doctors will have to submit themselves to the control of regional
specialized commissions, made up of physicians who will judge whether the
"diagnosis" is correct. These commissions may take a case to court, if
there is evidence that the mandatory conditions were not met.

The parliamentary debate that preceded the voting was intense and
reawakened the old disagreement between the Christian parties and the
parties of the governmental coalition of Prime Minister Wim Kok: the PvdA
(Social-Democrat), the D66 (Reformist of the Left), and VVD (Liberal).

The coalition parties commented that "after 25 years of debates, at last
the government assumes its responsibilities."

The CDA Christian Democrats, in the opposition since 1994, believe that
the government "wants to reconcile the irreconcilable," by authorizing
euthanasia when it is meant to "protect human life." The small Christian
parties SGP and Christian Union have described the law as a "juridical
monstrosity."

For years, euthanasia has been illegal but tolerated in the Netherlands.
According to official figures, 2,565 cases have been registered since
1998, 90% of whom were terminally ill cancer patients. ZE00112808

RUSSIAN ORTHODOX LEADER OPEN TO PAPAL VISIT
Says Disputes Would Need to Be Settled First

MOSCOW, NOV. 28, 2000 (ZENIT.org).- The head of the Russian Orthodox
Church said a meeting with John Paul II would be possible if the two
churches first settled some disputes, the Associated Press reported.

Patriarch Alexy II met today with visiting Italian President Carlo Azeglio
Ciampi, who voiced hope that a meeting between the Pope and patriarch
could be arranged, AP said.

"We do not rule out such a possibility, but we believe the meeting should
be well prepared and the obstacles to it that exist today should be
removed,'' Patriarch Alexy reportedly said.

The Pope has long wanted to visit Moscow, part of his effort to promote
reconciliation between the churches. But the Russian Orthodox Church says
such a visit must not occur until several conflicts are resolved, AP
noted.

Orthodox officials say that long-standing theological divisions have been
worsened by Catholic missionary activity following the fall of communism
in predominantly Orthodox Russia. Another obstacle is the conflict over
church property in western Ukraine, where the Communists gave Ukrainian
Catholic holdings to the Orthodox, AP said.

The Pope and the patriarch were scheduled to meet in Vienna in 1997, but
the meeting was called off over the unresolved disputes. ZE00112821

GRANDMOM LAUNCHES ALTERNATIVE INTERNET FOR FAMILIES
Californian, 67, Aims to Protect Children

ROME, NOV. 28, 2000 (ZENIT.org).- El St. John is 67, lives in California,
has seven children and numerous grandchildren, and has just launched an
enterprise that cost $15 million. Her objective is straightforward: to
establish a safe network on Internet.

She is the descendent of Slav and Italian immigrants, and in her youth
studied psychology and marketing, eventually getting a job with Bell
Laboratories, one of the great centers of high-tech inventions in the
United States. At Bell Labs, she followed the development of domestic
microelectronics until the advent of Internet. Now she is determined to
resolve a paramount problem: safe access to a network that has proved to
be a minefield for families and children.

After discovering that electronic barriers to block cybernetic pirates
sooner or later reveal their weak points, St. John decided that "the only
system to avoid the manipulation of 'honest' sites is to create another
Internet, as a reflection of the first but separate from it."

St. John's idea is to reconstruct a cybernetic space, which filters
everything on the ordinary network -- sites, contents, news and graphics
-- and offers it to those seeking a safe space.

"Internet's vulnerability can have worrying effects on children," she
said. "When they understand that anyone can enter their home, they lose
their peace, do not feel respected, and grow up with the idea that it is
normal to abuse one's neighbor. If, then, a malicious individual appears,
they think it is their fault and withdraw [into themselves]."

When she left Bell Labs, El St. John and her husband decided to create
Silvertech, a company which began to create "closed" networks for
businesses and institutions. The secret of the whole plan is the private
Internet engine, or PIE -- basically, a search engine for a private
Internet. This cryptographic software impedes strangers from entering the
new domains protected by the Silvertech server and, therefore,
inaccessible to those lacking the right cryptographic keys.

PIE's patent was issued last year. Since then, St. John has been dedicated
to her project for children, E-Kids Internet, investing some of her
savings and as well as investment funds from large enterprises.

"Only pedagogically irrefutable contents can enter our network," she said.
"Our 'constitution' is the U.N. Charter for Children's Rights." An army of
teachers, psychologists and part-time collaborators, along with 62
technicians, guarantee daily operation.

E-Kids is spreading fast. There are already close to 3 million
applications for subscriptions in the United States alone. It hopes to
expand in Europe too.

El St. John arrived in Italy to find technological associates. She was
invited by Digital Kids, a Milan association, which is preparing a
document on Internet for children in Italy.

For the time being, subscriptions are free. "On our site, a family
registers its request and we send them a CD-ROM with the cryptographic
software," St. John said. "One can only connect to our server, via modem,
through that program.

"A child can then navigate with no problem to 'E-Kids' services and games,
but also to his favorite sites, verified daily, to which he can asks us to
add others he tells us about. We take a look at them and then decide.
However, there are enterprise that already provide us every day with
versions from their sites that are adequate for children."

The children are asked for a double commitment: first, to behave well
(navigation and mail exchanges are controlled; if a child uses bad words,
he is warned first in a friendly manner, and then suspended); and second,
to give the name of a friend, every six months, who might be interested in
E-Kids. This is the secret of the rapid expansion of the alternative,
family Internet. ZE00112804

2001 TO BE U.N.'S YEAR OF VOLUNTEERS
One Goal Is to Set Up an Information Network

GENEVA, NOV. 28, 2000 (ZENIT.org).- The United Nations is designating
2001
the International Year of Volunteers, and it hopes that countries accept
volunteer work as an alternative to military service.

The United Nations plans to recognize those professionals who daily give
their support to U.N. humanitarian missions. The agency proposes that
governments and local authorities ensure the means to encourage and
support volunteers. Another item on the U.N. agenda is the establishment
of a network of information on volunteer work, enabling countries to
exchange data and ideas.

U.N. volunteer programs have embraced 20,000 professionals from 140
countries. The programs have carried out different tasks since 1970, such
as providing emergency food, caring for AIDS patients in African
countries, and registering citizens for elections in high-risk countries.

A typical volunteer for an international organization is a 39-year-old
professional, with 10 years of experience in his field. He receives a
small salary in the place where he is sent, which allows him to live
reasonably well. Among the volunteers, 64% come from developing countries;
and 36% are women. ZE00112806

Subject: [bprlist] Mysteries: What Channel 4, NBC and General Electric Don't want you to know!
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>

-----forwarded message-----

For those of you who have worried about not receiving news of our two
expeditions last year, the following Press Release will add some light.

For many months, I have been trying to obtain access to the 170 + hours of
film taken in order to clarify the documentaries and TV specials made by
Channel 4 in the UK and NBC in the USA, a subsidiary of GE.

My requests have fallen on deaf ears and worse, agreements that I had made
to be able to distribute the programmes they actually concocted (which do
NOT accurately reflect the discoveries) via video tape, have not been
honoured.

We would be very much obliged if you could therefore copy the press release
to your friends, business associates, groups, churches, synagogues and
mosques as well as your local newspapers and other media outlets, bulletin
boards, chat rooms etc. etc..

We hope that if enough people contact the networks, we will be able to show
the startling discoveries we made without their censorship.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BY "MYSTERIES OF THE BIBLE"

First public release of photographs of flat rectangular block walls in addition
to the hundreds of mounds found at one spot only at the bottom of the Dead
Sea. Area of the "city" 0.8 kilometres x 0.8 kilometres. A perfect square!
The rest of the bottom of the Dead Sea is perfectly flat. Taken from mini-sub
Delta.

Part I of a series. Part II due December 5, 2000,
"Conspiracy to fail".

Irvine California, Tuesday, November 28, 2000

"Biblical Foundation threatened! Accused of harassing NBC and GE"

"Head NBC Lawyer accuses non profit Foundation of harassment after
receiving 5 e-mails copied to five executives including Jack Welch of GE!"

NBC/GE INTIMIDATION ATTEMPT REJECTED!

"Mysteries of the Bible Research Foundation last November undertook two
expeditions financed in total by Channel 4 in the UK and NBC Television in
the USA, a subsidiary of General Electric.

1) The first submarine ever to investigate the bottom of the Dead Sea for
evidence of Sodom & Gomorrah!

2) An expedition that found an Egyptian Temple in the Judean Hills (A
Hamas Stronghold); the site where all the treasures of Solomon's Temple
were handed over to the Egyptian King Shishak: Plus the investigation of The
Mortuary Temple of an Egyptian King at Thebes which showed the Ark being
brought back to Egypt on its original Golden Poles.

In order to get the Director of the expeditions to allow NBC and C4 to film the
expeditions certain written undertakings were given by Channel 4 on the day
prior to the start of the work. They stated that they did not have time to
prepare formal contracts.

The written undertakings included the statement that it was to be a co-
production with NBC, with NBC putting up more than half the money. That
the Director of Expeditions was to be a co-producer and that U.S. home
video rights were to be granted in perpetuity to the Director, who wishing to
have no personal gain, transferred those rights to the Mysteries of the Bible
Research Foundation to enable it to continue its work of Biblical Research.

Not only were these undertakings not adhered to either by Channel 4 or
NBC, a concerted effort was made to hide the results of the expeditions. The
Expedition found evidence of a "city" beneath the Dead Sea, of "The Ark of
the Covenant" in a Temple in Egypt and the contents of the Ark, which were
left behind in the Egyptian temple ruins located in the Hebron Hills. Facts
were altered in the documentary, important evidence was omitted and NBC
has not released the TV special nor allowed any information about the
expeditions to be released in the U.S. Other rights including video rights
were promised and then forgotten. When CBS "60 Minutes" wanted to do a
profile of the Director of Expeditions, it was specifically forbidden by NBC.
(No such restriction was placed on Jack Welch who recently did his profile
with the opposition) NBC refused permission for the Director to make ANY
comments to any media outlet. Censorship by a leading U.S. network?

BBC Horizon just had to rebroadcast a documentary for doing less damage
to the truth than Channel 4. Is this a pattern in British Television? It looks as
if the virus has also spread to the USA. In fact "Inside Edition" yesterday
exposed Fox for airing a phoney "live" presentation of the opening of
Egyptian tombs by an old pal of the Director, Dr. Zahi Hawass.

Channel 4 in the UK and NBC have constantly refused to answer any
questions posed by the Expedition Director and refused to allow him any
editing of the documentaries even though errors of fact were knowingly
transmitted by Channel 4.

NBC after one year has at last answered an email after the personal
intervention of Jack Welch, Chairman and CEO of General Electric, the
parent of NBC. Not ONE email has ever been answered by Channel 4 in the
United Kingdom.

(Stop Press: After having been given the courtesy of a notification that this
press release would be issued, the legal council of Channel 4, for the first
time, sent one letter repeating the charge of harassment even though he had
received only copies of letters sent by NBC. He further confirmed that Home
Video rights were granted to the Director of the Expedition, but now wanted
to add some provisos to try and preserve Channel 4's tattered reputation,
before doing the honourable thing. Is there no shame in this industry?) Mr.
Welch's intervention however resulted only in the legal department of NBC
issuing threats and accusations of harassment to the Director of the
Expedition.

Although the Director of the expedition was given the credit of co-producer,
NONE of his input was allowed in the television documentaries and that has
been reported to the relevant watchdog authority in the United Kingdom.

NBC has refused to allow the special to be edited showing the complete and
correct story and has instead stalled the transmission for one-year causing
tremendous financial strain on the Biblical Foundation. They did not even see
most of the 170 hours of film taken and have expressed no interest in seeing
all the evidence found. This, even though they have spent about One million
dollars on the projects; they also refuse to turn over the masters of the
specials to the Foundation and to release the videos according to their
agreement: Thus preventing the world from seeing vitally important evidence
of the Ark of the Covenant and Sodom and Gomorrah. This is the only source
of income that allows the Foundation to continue its educational work.

Are Channel 4, NBC and GE biased against religion? Was not NBC recently
involved in a flap where they didn't think it important to get facts straight
about the time of Noah and the time of Abraham? Does NBC prefer to air
fictionalised accounts of the Bible rather than accurate research? Judging by
the critics they do not seem to do that either accurately or well!

Is NBC so afraid of the truth being revealed that they would claim that 5
emails (mainly because the first 4 weren't answered and contained material
that NBC had requested) was harassment? What has happened to free
speech and the search for truth at the Network of Tom Brokaw and Tim
Russert's "Meet the Press"? For further information and copies of
correspondence, evidence, the NBC, Channel 4, Channel 4 International and
General Electric files etc., please contact:

Subject: [bprlist] Vicar resumes service after a sex change

Vicar resumes service after a sex change

BY MICHAEL HORSNELL

A SEX-CHANGE vicar yesterday announced a return to parish duties at the
weekend after undergoing privately funded surgery and declared: =93I=92m gl ad
finally to be myself.=94 Parishioners at St Philip=92s Church in Upper
Stratton, Swindon, will attend a service led by the Rev Carol Stone on
Sunday after four years of ministry in her previous guise as the Rev Peter
Stone.

Twice married and divorced, Ms Stone, 46, who fathered a daughter now 18,
is believed to be the first serving vicar to undergo a sex swap with the
backing of the Church of England.

Stepping into the limelight dressed in a smart navy blue suit and modest
heels, she said: =93From the age of four my last prayer at night was to wak e
up as a girl. I am thrilled to finally be me; that=92s the main thing.=94

Mr Stone=92s first marriage to Margaret, by whom he had his daughter, laste d
seven years. He poured his heart out to his second wife, Jo-Anne, as their
13-year marriage fell apart. He consulted two psychiatrists before
starting hormone treatment.

He overcame his biggest hurdle in January when he broke the news to the
Bishop of Bristol, the Right Rev Barry Rogerson. He went public with his
decision to his congregation in June and then went into hiding during the
summer to undergo surgery. Yesterday, the Rev Carol Stone met journalists
at the residence of the Right Rev Michael Doe, the Bishop of Swindon. She
said: =93I have only had two vocations in my whole life, being a priest and
being a woman. My congregation has been fantastic.=94

She went on to say that her sex change raises serious questions that the
Church must address. =93There are continuing debates on the subject of
gender realignment, many issues the Church needs to address and to really
think through carefully.=94

She said her family has also backed her sex change. =93My mother has been
very supportive; so have my two brothers.=94

Greta Davies, vice-chairman of the parochial church council, said: =93There
has been overwhelming support from the parishioners.=94

SPANISH ROYAL COUPLE ON ROME PILGRIMAGE

Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia made a snap visit to the Vatican
Tuesday to mark the Catholic Jubilee year and hold talks with Pope John
Paul II. The royal couple saw the head of the Roman Catholic Church for
20 minutes in his private apartment and also met with the Vatican's #2,
Cardinal Angelo Sodano, before crossing the threshold of Saint Peter's
Basilica's holy door. The traditional rite has already been carried out by
most Catholic state and government leaders seeking indulgence in the holy
year declared by the pope.

"We came here for the Jubilee and to see you," the queen, dressed in white,
as is customary for Catholic queens, told the pope. Juan Carlos grew up in
Rome where he was baptized in 1938. He was in the Italian capital during a
previous holy year, in 1950. The royal visit to the Vatican coincides with
talks by Spanish Prime Minister and his Italian counterpart who were to
sign a landmark accord on combatting serious crime, Mafia activities and
pedophilia. The agreement, the first of its kind within the European Union,
will do away with extradition procedures between the 2 countries for
persons suspected of committing serious crimes, officials said. (Agence
France-Presse)

BISHOPS STILL AIM TO INFLUENCE CHARTER OF RIGHTS

European bishops are not giving up on efforts to influence the European
Union's Charter of Fundamental Rights, even though references to the
continent's Christian heritage have already been deleted from it.The charter
is expected to approved at a Dec. 7 summit in Nice, France. It likely to be
approved as a simple declaration of good intentions, without a binding
character. Nevertheless, some observers believe the charter could be the
embryo of a European constitution.

Bishops lamented that the reference to the continent's Christian heritage
was deleted, the very key that historically cemented European identity.
"This deletion is incredible," Bishop Attilio Nicora of Italy, a representative
on the Commission of Episcopates of the European Union (COMECE), told
the press Saturday. "It is incredible above all because to deny history is an
action that is neither culturally valid nor democratically positive."

Bishop Josef Homeyer, president of COMECE, said as much in a message
from the bishops to the heads of state and government who will meet in
Nice. Their message echoed that of the Council of European Episcopal
Conferences (CCEE). Bishop Homeyer and COMECE vice president
Bishop Adrianus van Luyn of the Netherlands joined Bishop Nicora at the
press conference following the organization's plenary session. One reporter
asked the bishops what they hope to do before the Nice summit.

"We know it is very difficult for the text to be modified," said Bishop Nicora
said. "However, we hope that our observations will be kept duly in mind,
especially if this charter becomes the basis for the European constitution. In
this connection, it is not useless to point out values and defects, above all,
the fact that the expression about the humanist and religious heritage was
deleted in the preamble to make way for a more general spiritual
patrimony."

The articles also came under the bishops' criticism. For example, Article 3
only condemns reproductive cloning, which "could open the door to what is
erroneously called therapeutic cloning," Bishop Nicora stressed. Article 9,
with its distinction between the right to marry and the right to constitute a
family, is somewhat of a Trojan horse for de facto unions, including those of
homosexuals. "This is very grave, because it not only contradicts the Judeo-
Christian but also the civil tradition, which goes back to Roman law," Bishop
Nicora contended. (Zenit)

N.A.T.O.: EURO FORCE MUST STAY UNDER OUR CONTROL

NATO is insisting that the new European Rapid Reaction Force should
remain under its control and be led by General Sir Rupert Smith, NATO
Secretary-General Lord Robertson has told The Telegraph. Lord Robertson
said that General Smith, the British general who made his name in the Gulf
war and later in the Balkans, will be in charge of any operation the force
undertakes in his role as NATO's Deputy Supreme Allied Commander
Europe, D/SACEUR.

However, a final decision on how the force will be commanded is being
held up by the French. They insist that there should be separate planning
staff to those of NATO. National contingents allocated to the new force
would not be permanently committed and could be recalled by national
heads of government in an attempt to counter concerns that the force
would become a European army, said Lord Robertson. A senior NATO
spokesman said the "plan" was for General Smith to command the force,
but this was still the subject of negotiation. The agreement of all NATO and
EU governments was required.

A major complication is that not all NATO members are also EU
members.Turkey in particular, a major contributor to NATO's order of
battle, is not an EU member and has expressed strong objections to the
force, fearing the creation of a European military structure from which it
will be excluded. Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic are also
members of NATO but not of the EU. Furthermore, 4 members of the EU
do not belong to NATO: Austria, Finland, Ireland and Sweden.

An outline of an eventual force command structure places D/SACEUR at
the head, with an officer chosen by the EU Council of Ministers as his chief
of staff. The nominated officer is currently a German, General Rainer
Schuwirth, who holds the title of Chief of the EU military staff. Under
present arrangements, the post of D/SACEUR, once always British, now
alternates between Britain and Germany. D/SACEUR, acting as head of
the new force, will be answerable to the EU's Council of Ministers.

However, the EU will have to secure the agreement of the North Atlantic
Council, which includes America and Canada, to the employment on EU
missions of European forces allocated to NATO. The British forces
promised to the EU are also earmarked to NATO, and so are "double-
hatted". As they are also elements in Britain's national order of battle they
are "triple-hatted". The direct authority of D/SACEUR, acting as
commander of the EU force, will therefore depend on the concurrence of 2
alliance bodies and a national government.

Disagreement between EU governments turns at present on the issue of
timing and, more importantly, the nature of mechanisms for military
planning. France and Britain would like all differences to be settled before
the Nice summit next month, but the British Government doubts that this
will happen. Britain, with other NATO governments, wants planning to be
done at Shape, NATO's military headquarters at Mons, Belgium. However,
the French are arguing for a separate body - a "Euro-Shape" - independent
of NATO's military structures, to which France does not belong.

The French are in an isolated position, since the British negotiators are not
alone in foreseeing duplication, additional costs and muddled thinking if a
new and parallel structure is interposed between NATO's command system
and its earmarked forces. The well-known ambiguity of the French in their
relationship with NATO - politically part of it, militarily fiercely independent
- seems to ensure that a final decision lies well in the future.

NATO spokesmen are insistent that the outcome will eventually be reached
at a ministerial level between the North Atlantic Council and the EU's
Council of Ministers, so that America and Canada will have a voice,
potentially a deciding one, in the final decision. They dismiss altogether the
view that Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission, has any
part to play at all, and with it his pronouncements about the force being a
European army in embryo. The NATO view is that "even the French draw
a red line between the EU force and Prodi's fantasies about running a
Euroarmy."

The negotiating structure - in which officials report to ambassadors,
ambassadors to foreign and defence ministries, and they in turn to
governments, many of which are not under close parliamentary scrutiny -
promises to do little to cure the "democratic deficit" in the EU's relationship
with European electors. (The London Telegraph)

O.S.C.E. CONFERENCE ENDS IN FAILURE

The OSCE European security body failed Tuesday to agree on a joint
declaration after a 2-day summit, with the West blaming Russian President
Vladimir Putin for not upholding Moscow's commitments. Current OSCE
president, Austrian Foreign Minister Benita Ferrero-Waldner, said the 55
delegates had failed to reach a consensus on a joint declaration. The
Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe works on a strict
consensus basis, under which all parties have to agree to every word.

Instead of a joint text, "there will be a chairman's summary, although we
have been negotiating all through the night" to sort out the wording
concerning Chechnya, Georgia and Moldova, she said. "Unfortunately there
remain disputes on what these paragraphs contain." Russia has come under
fierce attack at the meeting of foreign ministers of the OSCE, notably over
its failure to keep commitments made last year concerning the conflict in
separatist Chechnya and a withdrawal of Russian forces in Georgia and
Moldova. It is the first big diplomatic dispute between the West and Russia
since Putin's election last March. (Agence France-Presse)

NAT'L SOVEREIGNTY WINS ONE AGAINST THE W.W.W.

Last week, while Florida's courts were ruling on the fate of the presidential
race, a French court ruled on the fate of cyberspace. As with Florida's
rulings, the French decision has provoked all manner of attack. As with
Florida, attacks alone will not stop the court from exerting a profound
influence. The French court ruled that Yahoo! Inc., operator of the popular
Internet address, must do what it can to block French users from visiting its
auction sites that sell Nazi memorabilia. To cyber-libertarians, this is an
outrage: The French are presuming to regulate speech on an American
Web site used primarily by American surfers. But the French argue that
disseminating this stuff is illegal under French law, so French citizens ought
to be prevented from viewing it in cyberspace.

If this ruling stands, it will bury the old idea that the Internet cannot be
regulated. That idea is espoused not only by cyber-visionaries but also by
American judges. The Net's international character puts it beyond the reach
of sovereign governments, the court seemed to accept; therefore, regulation
is futile. The French court now is saying that, au contraire, you can divide
the Net into geographic chunks and regulate each one separately. Yahoo! is
welcome to display Nazi stuff to Americans, in accordance with American
law, but it should follow French law when it comes to French viewers.

If the Net can be zoned this way, regulation and national sovereignty
suddenly seem durable. Contrary to cyber-libertarian hopes, we are not
headed inexorably toward globalized anarchy. At this point, you may
suspect a sinister French plot - France has been railing against Hollywood
and hamburgers and American-dominated globalization for years; it should
be no surprise that it wants to impose its defensive nationalism on
cyberspace.

Everybody now accepts that the Internet can be zoned, at least in the sense
that people can use filtering software. The new development, reflected in
the decision of the French court, is that you also can zone according to
geography. Similarly, the French cannot put pressure on obscure collectors
of Nazi memorabilia, who don't care if they break French law. But they can
pressure international players like Yahoo! and so get at their real enemies.

Should zoning and indirect enforcement be cause for alarm? Libertarians
argue that it will be impossible to put up a Web site without dozens of
countries demanding that you filter this and censor that; the bother and
expense of compliance might chill online creativity. But the cost of
compliance will fall mainly on ambitious international firms, which stand to
reap compensating profits from the Net's international reach. And it is a bit
much to excoriate the French for suppressing individual freedom online.
French law reflects the choices of French individuals, expressed in free
elections. (Int'l Herald Tribune)

Subject: [bprlist] Los Angeles Cuts Ties with Boy Scouts Over Gay Issue

Los Angeles Cuts Ties with Boy Scouts Over Gay Issue

By Sarah Tippit

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday voted
11
to 0 to cut the city's ties with the Boy Scouts of America, saying the
group's exclusion of homosexuals and atheists was discriminatory.

The vote followed similar moves by municipalities, police departments and
groups across the country to show displeasure at a Supreme Court decision
last June that upheld the Boy Scouts right to exclude homosexuals. The
court, by a 5 to 4 vote, said the Scouts had the right to set its own
moral code and espouse its own viewpoint.

But City Council members said Los Angeles law prevents relationships with
organizations that discriminate. ``We don't have a choice legally. Both
the spirit and the content of existing city law is very clear: the city
shouldn't participate in a discriminatory practice or policy,'' Councilman
Mike Feuer said.

He added: ``Nobody, including the Boy Scouts ... has articulated what the
difference is between discriminating on the basis of race, on the one
hand, which they would agree ought never happen, and discriminating on the
basis of sexual orientation.''

A Boy Scouts spokesman declined to comment on the vote Tuesday. ``It
came
so quick we're just looking at our options as to just exactly what we are
facing here,'' Boy Scouts spokesman Joey Robinson said.

Police Department To Dismantle Its Explorer Unit

Under terms of the measure, the Los Angeles Police Department will be
asked to dismantle its Explorers unit, a Boy Scouts-affiliated police
cadet training program for young people, within 90 days, and create an
alternative, said Laura Esquivel, assistant to Councilwoman Jackie
Goldberg, a gay rights activist who heads the city's personnel committee
and was a major backer of the measure.

All other city departments will be audited to determine whether other
contractual relationships exist with Boy Scouts affiliates, and all city
contracts will be examined to ensure they contain non-discriminatory
clauses, and are in compliance with city code, Esquivel said.

In addition, the city's department of Parks and Recreation will, in the
future, charge the Boy Scouts a fee to use its facilities for camping and
other activities, Esquivel said.

``They had been in the practice of waiving fees for certain scout
activities. We pointed out that their criteria should be consistent with
the city's non-discrimination policy. The Boy Scouts no longer qualify to
be subsidized by taxpayer money because we have an obligation not to
subsidize organizations that discriminate,'' Esquivel said.

The Boy Scouts exclude ``avowed homosexuals'' from its ranks, maintaining
they violate the Scouting oath to be ``morally straight'' and the Scouting
law to be ``clean.''

The Scouts has recently initiated a separate, non-discriminatory values
education program to be used in public schools, hospitals, fire
departments and police cadet programs called ``Learning For Life'' which
has no membership rules and is open to girls and homosexuals, spokesman
Robinson said.

More than 90 million Americans have joined the Boy Scouts since the
organization was founded in 1910. It now has nearly 5 million members
between the ages of 11 and 17 and nearly 1.3 million adult leaders.

TESTING THE FAITH
A LUTHERAN CONGREGATION STANDS BY ITS LESBIAN PASTOR

http://www.chicagotribune.com/leisure/womannews/printedition/article/0,2669,SAV-0011290013,FF.html

By Eric Adler
Knight Ridder/Tribune
November 29, 2000
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Believe this: The parishioners of tiny Abiding Peace
Lutheran Church in Kansas City, North--membership 45 people--didn't want to be
at the center of a national church debate on sexuality. For five years all
they've wanted is a full-time pastor, something they were just too small to
afford.

Well, they finally have one. And that's where the trouble lies.

Last month, 35-year-old Donna Simon stood at Abiding Peace's altar and was
ordained as its new minister. When that happened, Abiding Peace committed an
act of ecclesiastic disobedience. As a consequence, it could become the first
Lutheran church in a decade to be suspended from its national church
community, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

At issue: Simon's sexuality. She is lesbian and won't promise to be celibate.

Few church issues are as difficult to navigate today as those involving gay
church members and clergy.

"In all the mainline Protestant churches and others, this is probably the most
controversial issue of the last 10 years and will be for the next 10 years,"
said Lutheran Bishop Paul Egertson in Southern California.

Had Simon promised lifelong celibacy, the Evangelical Lutheran Church would
have little problem with her ordination. The ELCA, the largest branch of the
Lutheran church with more than 5 million members, has long accepted celibate
homosexuals as ministers, as have a few other denominations.

But according to "Visions and Expectations," the Evangelical Lutheran church's
behavioral guidebook, the rules are clear:

Ordained ministers who are homosexual in their self-understanding are expected
to abstain from homosexual relationships.

Simon decided years ago she could never honor such a vow. At age 30, while a
student at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, Calif., Simon
realized she was gay. She fell in love with another seminarian.

"My relationship with my partner," said Simon, "was the most faith-filled and
God-centered relationship I ever had."

That relationship is over now. But Simon knew as she graduated from seminary
that she desired a committed, loving relationship and therefore couldn't
promise to always be celibate. She told this to the committee that was
screening candidates for ordination.

"I wanted to tell them what the truth of my life is," she said.

The result: She was never approved for ordination and is not recognized as a
pastor in the ELCA.

As a result of Simon's ordination, Bishop Charles Maahs, head of the Lutheran
Synod in Missouri and Kansas, may have no option but to recommend that Abiding
Peace be suspended and perhaps expelled from the roster of Lutheran churches.
Abiding Peace would become an independent church, cut off from the larger
community of Lutheran churches and the programs, services and support the ELCA
provides.

Not since 1990 has any church been suspended for such an offense. In San
Francisco that year, First United Lutheran Church ordained Jeff Johnson, a
non-celibate gay man. St. Francis Lutheran Church ordained Phyllis Zillhart
and Ruth Frost, a lesbian couple. Both churches were suspended, then five
years later expelled, for choosing to stand by their pastors rather than
church rules.

Abiding Peace may go through the same wrenching process.

"I've met with these people," Maahs said. "They're wonderful people, but I
have the responsibility of upholding the policy of the church. This is the
bind."

Certainly no one is caught more in that bind than the members of Abiding
Peace. They say that in just a few months they have come to cherish and
respect Simon, finding her devoutly spiritual and affable.

"I love her," said churchgoer Valorie Bratcher, "as a mother, as a
grandmother."

To the people of Abiding Peace, Simon's sexual preference makes no difference.
When church members voted to offer her the pastor's job, they knew she was
lesbian.

"Personally," said congregation president Lyle Jaeger, "I don't understand why
being male or female, gay or straight, young or old, black or white should
make any difference to being a religious leader. Since she has arrived, her
sermons, her activities, are just inspiring."

The congregation, however, is well aware their dilemma goes beyond mere church
politics.

The " irregular ordination" of Simon has caught the attention of Lutherans
nationwide. About 80 people from across the country attended the ordination to
show their support for Simon and the issue of non-celibate gay clergy. Fifteen
traveled from Ann Arbor, Mich., where she had interned.

In the Lutheran church, some even liken Abiding Peace's ecclesiastic
disobedience to the civil disobedience Rosa Parks showed when she refused to
move to the back of the bus.

"Perhaps actions like that taken by Abiding Peace will urge the rest of us to
deal with this issue and resolve it," said the Rev. Richard Jeske, pastor at
Faith Lutheran Church in Prairie Village, Kan.

To be sure, Abiding Peace's parishioners knew that by selecting a non-celibate
lesbian, the church could be expelled. But they also thought they had little
choice.

For years Abiding Peace sought a full-time pastor from the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America. There's a shortage of Lutheran pastors nationwide
and, even if there was not, Abiding Peace could afford to pay a salary of only
$14,000.

"We wanted a full-time pastor. That was our goal," Bratcher said.

The ELCA couldn't help them.

So in May, Abiding Peace contacted Lutheran Lesbian and Gay Ministries, a San
Francisco-based group that financially supports churches that choose
non-celibate homosexual pastors. The group sent Abiding Peace four candidates
along with extra money for a salary.

Church members unanimously chose Simon. Now, even if the church is set adrift
from its national community, members have no intention of letting Simon go.

"It is a matter of justice," said church member Mary Gerken. "They have to do
what they have to do. We have to follow the Gospel and what Christ would have
done."

Simon said of her members: "They are putting themselves at risk in a big way,
and this is not a radical place. Every week when we finish worship I think
these people are the greatest gift I've ever gotten."

Subject: [bprlist] Making Torah study a family habit
From: Shophar_Sho_Good

Making Torah study a family habit
JILL SUZANNE JACOBS

Jill Suzanne Jacobs is the Jewish family educator at the Leventhal-Sidman
Jewish Community Center in Newton, Mass. She wrote this article for the Jewish
Telegrapic Agency.

NEWTON, Mass. -- Experts say it takes 21 days to form a habit. Do something --
run, write in a journal, make a to-do list -- repeatedly and consistently
every day for three weeks and that action will become yours.

We are what we repeatedly do, Aristotle taught us. Speak of Torah to your
children in your home and on your way, our liturgy directs us, in the morning
and at night, and it will become a habit as routine as brushing your teeth.

Making Torah study a family habit is something you can incorporate into your
family life. Your Torah study habit can be as informal as making a point to
discuss Jewish topics during car drives, or as formal as setting aside a
particular time each week for study.

For young children, this can simply mean singing Jewish songs or reading a
story. For older children, you can have discussions around the dinner table
one evening a week. (Hint: Make it Friday and you will have started a Shabbat
tradition.)

But what if you don't know Hebrew, never studied the Bible -- or, if you did,
forgot about it?

Here are a few of the several resources for family Torah study on the
Internet:

The Reform Movement's website, www.uahc.org, has two sites that provide
information and guidance for Torah study with children. ``Shabbat Table Talk''
provides home study materials on the weekly Torah portion. The ``Jewish Parent
Page'' educates about Jewish holidays.

Torah Aurah, www.torahaura.com, an offbeat Jewish publisher, produces
materials that families can use at home. B'Shivtekha B'veitekha provides
information, illustrations and discussion questions on the weekly Torah
portion. At $45, it is rather expensive, so if you affiliate with a Jewish
organization -- Jewish community center, synagogue, or day school -- you might
want to suggest your Jewish educator purchase and distribute it.

Other less pricey options from this publishing house include My Weekly Sidra,
which provides a short activity for the Torah portion. This is suitable for
families with children 5-7. The cost is $9.95.

For older children, I would recommend Torah Toons II and I. They will love the
comic-book approach to Torah study. The cost is $10.95

While the options listed involve more formal study, you should not be afraid
to do something that suits your needs.

There are many collections of Jewish stories that can become part of your
family's Torah study habit. After all, Torah in the broadest sense, includes
not only the five books of Moses, but also all of Jewish literature. More
important than the actual content of the learning is the process itself.

When you make a habit of Jewish learning with your children, you send a
powerful message: that Jewish learning is fun, important and a regular part of
life.

Miracle Woman Dies of Leukemia

http://www.worldnews.com/?action==display&article=F22271&template==worldnews/search.txt&index==recent

The Associated Press, Wed 29 Nov 2000

LISBON, Portugal (AP) - A Portuguese woman whose sudden recovery from a
crippling spinal injury was recognized by the Vatican as a miracle has died of
leukemia, news reports said Wednesday.

Maria Emilia Santos, who was 70, died Monday at a home for the elderly in
Leiria, 70 miles north of Lisbon, the daily Diario de Noticias reported.

Santos was bedridden for 22 years with a spinal injury and claimed her
unexpected recovery in 1989 was due to the divine intervention of two of three
shepherd children who affirmed they saw visions of the Virgin Mary at Fatima,
Portugal in 1917.

Her apparent cure occurred on the anniversary of the death of one of the two
children who died within two years of the apparition. During a visit to Fatima
in May, Pope John Paul II beatified the two children. The third is still
alive.

Beatification, the last step before sainthood can be considered, requires that
at least one miracle be proven. Sainthood requires a second miracle.

Each year about 6 million people visit Fatima, a town of 8,000 people near

TOURING STATUE OF MARY ON VIEW IN LAKE COUNTY

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/metro/lake/printedition/article/0,2669,SAV-0011280248,FF.html

Helene Van Sickle
November 28, 2000
LIBERTYVILLE -- Our Lady of the New Millennium, the 33-foot-tall, 8,400-pound
stainless-steel statue of Mary, will make Marytown her home for the next two
weeks.

The statue, on a tour of churches and parochial schools within the Chicago
Catholic Archdiocese, has been drawing crowds of worshipers across the Chicago
area since 1999, said Marcia O'Connor, retreat director of Marytown, home of
the Conventual Franciscan Friars.

The rendering was commissioned as a gift to the church by the late Carl Demma
of Oak Lawn as a tribute to his two daughters who died of a blood disease. The
statue was sculpted by Delaware artist Charles Cooper Parks.

O'Connor said the tour allows Demma's gift to be shared with churches and
schools throughout the archdiocese, which includes Lake County. The statue
will remain at Marytown until Dec. 11.

"It's been just about everywhere through the archdiocese. It's coming to us
from Transfiguration Church in Chicago. After it's with us, it will go to
Sacred Heart Parish in Palos Hills, where it will remain through March 2001,"
O'Connor said.

The statue will continue to be on tour next year, O'Connor said.

"Eventually, a permanent site will be chosen for the statue, possibly as part
of archdiocesan offices in Chicago, but no decision has been made yet."

Upon its arrival on a flatbed truck to Marytown Sunday morning, the 4-ton
statue was raised hydraulically to a standing position on a trailer. The
display is expected to take up about 75 feet of ground space in Marytown's
parking lot.

"We'll have a small tent for people to write prayer petitions, as well as
having seats if they want to spend time with the statue and pray," O'Connor
said. "We're expecting a large group of people to be coming through here every
single day."

"It's a profound experience to see something this large and this beautiful. It
touches people in different ways. I think people are just drawn to her,"
O'Connor said.

The statue will be visible from Illinois Highway 176 daily through Dec. 11 on
the east side of Marytown, 1600 W. Park Ave.

Subject: [bprlist] 'Eye' Chip Tracks Movement/New Device Improves Low Vision
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>
Date: Wed, 29 Nov 2000 13:26:22 -0500

'Eye' Chip Tracks Movement
by Kristen Philipkoski

3:00 a.m. Apr. 10, 1999 PDT
A chip modeled on the human eye could lead to a new class of
monitoring devices capable of interpreting and responding to movement.

Unlike previous solutions that required a computer to process moving
images, the new chip could be embedded in a video camera to perform
surveillance, guide robots, even assist in surgical procedures.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore developed the
integrated low-power chip. It imitates the operation of the
high-definition central region of the retina (the fovea), as well as
the lower-resolution peripheral vision area that tracks the location
of objects.

"It works by a similar technique as the eye -- the layers of
processing are modeled after the [functions of] the human retina,"
said Ralph Etienne-Cummings, assistant professor of electrical and
computer engineering at Johns Hopkins. "It's inspired by and mimics
some of the properties of mammalian retinas, such as photo receptors
and mechanisms for image enhancement and temporal processing."

Of its ability to understand motion, Etienne-Cummings noted that the
function of the chip is not what's novel. "It's the way it
functions. It's a regular CMOS [integrated circuit] chip that can
execute all of its operations directly, without the help of a
computer, which results in a very low energy requirement, small size
and high speed."

"It's interesting to see how much of the processing could be embedded in
[a] camera, cutting down on the size and expense of computer vision
systems," said Michael Swain, a researcher at the Cambridge Research
Laboratory.

The chip will likely be used in electronic toys, as well, says Swain, who
has developed algorithms for computer vision based on low-resolution color
cues. "I'm particularly impressed by the speed at which the toy industry
is adopting new technology for interactive toys," Swain said. "Systems
like these could be used in just a few years in toy robotic systems such
as Lego MindStorms, provided the production costs can be made low
enough."

Swain noted that chips with similar processing capabilities could be
embedded in cameras to allow them to control their own motorized
pan-tilt platforms. "For example, they could automatically track
intruders in otherwise static environments."

The chip was originally meant to be used in surveillance systems to
guide a video camera, says Etienne-Cummings, and it's ready to be used
that way. "When someone walks in the room, it puts the person in the
picture. Or, you could walk around and a video phone would follow you.

"It could also be used in manufacturing to enable a robot to grab
moving parts," he said. "[The chip could be used for] anything that we
take for granted that uses some motor action -- reaching, grabbing,
following, tracking -- that would require first measuring some kind of
visual calculation and picking something out of the background."

Unlike other image-processing chips, Etienne-Cummings said that the
Johns Hopkins model is two-dimensional, as opposed to one-dimensional.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins have shown off the technology by mounting
the chip on a small mobile robot that follows a line on the floor and avoids
obstacles. The robot can track objects moving within its field of vision
whether it is the object or the robot that is moving.

Etienne-Cummings said that the chip could eventually be used in
microrobots, autonomous flying machines and extraterrestrial
rovers. But he has even higher hopes for it: Some day, he says, it may be
used to enable computer surgery to track the movement of a heartbeat, for
example, so that clogged arteries could be cleared without having to first
stop the heart.

New Device Improves Low Vision
by Michelle Delio

2:00 a.m. Nov. 28, 2000 PST
There's a gray space between total blindness and the types of vision
problems that can be easily corrected with lenses or laser
surgery. People with a condition called "low vision" retain some
ability to see but can't read most printed material, watch TV or get
around easily in the world.

Low vision can't be corrected with medical procedures, glasses or
contact lenses. But a new product that uses lasers to "paint" rows of
pixels directly onto the eye is helping people with low-vision see clearly
again.

Microvision's Nomad integrates Microvision's retinal scanning display
(RSD) technology into a device that's worn on the user's head. Nomad's
low-power beam of light sends information directly onto the eye, creating
high-resolution, see-through, full-motion images that appear to be
floating directly in front of the user, at about an arm's-length away.

Nomad consists of two pieces: a small control module worn clipped on
to a belt, and the head-worn display.

The control module receives a video signal from a computer -- a
desktop, laptop or a wearable computer -- which processes this signal to
drive a low-power laser. The light is then scanned by a small mirror to
create images.

A clear "Viewport" directs light to the eye. This light source is
controlled by miniature horizontal and vertical scanners that project the
image through an optical element into the viewer's eye, placing the image
directly onto the user's retina.

The experience, according to prototype users, makes you feel as if
you're looking at a large TV screen that's placed right in front of
you.

Nomad has been under development since January. Microvision tested
alpha-version prototypes over the past year, in order to assess
customer interest and improve on the product's design.

The product was originally designed as a wearable display for users in
medical and industrial fields who need to access information while keeping
their hands free. Such workers would be paramedics who need to view
critical patient data while administering first-aid, and aircraft
mechanics who want to be able to reference electronic manuals and
engineering schematics while working on planes.

Microvision expanded its vision for Nomad when it was approached by
Telesensory, a company that provides products that assist people with low
vision.

"Through the partnership with Telesensory, we saw that Nomad had
characteristics that would make it beneficial to low-vision users with
macular degeneration," said Chris Thero, the product manager for Nomad at
Microvision.

Telesensory plans to combine its existing low-vision products with the
Nomad display to improve the ability of people with low vision to read
printed material.

Low vision is a common condition in which visual perception has been
greatly reduced. Two percent of the population in the United States
has low vision -- 20/400 or worse, legal blindness being 20/200 --
according to estimates by the Community Services for the Blind and
Partially Sighted.

According to the Washington State Department of Services for the
Blind, about 4.4 million people the United States currently have
useable vision that can be improved with appropriate low-vision aids
and techniques. By the year 2020, this number is expected to swell to
about 159,000 in the state of Washington and 7.6 million people in the
United States.

Low-vision aids that incorporate Microvision's RSD technology will
improve the ability of the partially sighted to read printed material,
watch television, use computers or simply move around, said Henry Vessner,
an optician at Women's College Hospital in Toronto.

"People with low-vision conditions, which is typically caused by
macular or muscular degeneration, can see very bright, high-contrast
images," Vessner said. "Nomad uses fully directed scanned light to
create an extremely bright image that is 15 times brighter than a
standard wearable display unit and has high contrast range."

Tim Couture, vice president of product development for Telesensory,
said that he was particularly impressed with the light energy produced by
Nomad.

"Its ability to ... apply ... light energy directly to the retina is
substantially better than conventional technologies offered today," he
said.

Nomad will be available around spring of 2001. No price has been set
yet. Microvision is also partnering with wearable computing and
wireless integration companies, such as Xybernaut and WRQ Inc., to
provide mobile systems.

Microvision also thinks that its RSD technology will soon be
integrated into cellular phones and pagers, allowing users to view
e-mail, Web pages, faxes and files on the tiny displays of these
devices, just as if they were being displayed on a full-size desktop
computer monitor.

 OPEN LETTER TO BOSTON GLOBE
Letters Editor
The Boston Globe
letter@globe.com

In a letter yesterday (11/28/00) headlined "Israel is the
occupying power," it was alleged that Israel is "occupying" some
other nation's lands. The charge is untrue. Israel is neither an
occupier of lands belonging to others nor, for that matter, are
Jews forbidden by international law to build communities in the
lands Israel took possession of in the aftermath of the 1967 War
-- a war in which Israel was assaulted by no less than five Arab
armies.

During that war, when Israel entered the territories from which
Arab nations assaulted her, Israel crossed no international
border. Israel had entered "unalloted lands of the former British
Mandate of Palestine" to which Israel had valid claims. The lands were
at the time under the illegal occupation of Jordan and Egypt, which
had seized these territories of the Mandate twenty years earlier in
the first of the Arab wars against Israel (1948). Therefore, the term
"occupation" applied to Israel's tenure of those Mandate lands is an
international oxymoron since Israel would then be accused of "occuping
her own lands," lands of no other foreign power.

Prior to 1948, under the British Mandate, the Jewish people had
the right to "close settlement" on all portions of Mandate lands
and there existed long established Jewish communities in the
areas of Judea and Samaria, including the City of Jerusalem --
areas now referred to as "the West Bank." When Jordan and Egypt
seized those territories, they expelled all Jews, to the silence
of the world (including, I am sure, The Globe). The idea that
only Arabs lived in those areas was completely false. Moreover,
the Jewish right continues legal and unabated to "close
settlement" of these Mandate lands.

What must be emphasized is that, aside from Israel's claims,
there are no other valid sovereign claims to these West Bank
lands of the Mandate. There is not, nor has there ever been, a
"Palestinian Arab" nation located there. What was supposed to be
happening in the current so-called, falsely insinuated, "peace
process" was that Israel was negotiating with the Arab side to
cede portions of her claims to these territories in return for
peace. Until this negotiation is complete and accepted by Israel, the
Arabs will have no "rights" to such lands, let alone rights to form a
new sovereign Arab state in the area that had never existed before,
despite false allegations to the contrary.

In this context, the generosity of Israel's people in being
willing to contemplate the ceding of territories for the sake of
peace emerges most clearly even as the bad faith of the Arab
partner likewise shows out in glaring relief. They have been
taking possession of land under false pretenses of embracing
peace. Obviously, Israel would be altogether foolish to continue
with this process as it becomes evident from gross Arab
violations of agreements and armed violence that peace is not the goal
of the Arab side but rather that it remains Israel's destruction.

I would hope that fair minded observers will recognize these
facts and will support Israel's principled stand and right to
national self defense against those who would put this into
extreme jeopardy using a cloak of false and slanderous
allegations leveled against her. I have no doubt that Israel
will not allow herself to be destroyed under the enemies'
pretexts and that it is these enemies who will ultimately be
the losers in their unjust attacks.

                                   Yours sincerely,

                                   David Basch

1. PICKING A DATE
Following last night's dramatic announcement by Prime Minister Ehud Barak
that he would agree to new elections - "If you want new elections, I am
ready," he told the Knesset in mid-debate - the parliamentarians are busy
trying to agree upon a date and an election method. Likud leader Ariel
Sharon suspects that Barak is attempting to reach an agreement with the
Palestinians in the coming months, and that the new elections should
therefore be held as early as possible. "Barak is making every effort to
sign any type of agreement with Arafat, so that he can wave the piece of
paper at the public during the elections," Sharon said today.

Representatives of the opposition parties, including Shinui but not United
Torah Judaism, convened this morning and agreed to jointly demand new
elections within three months. Sharon also said that his party should
conduct primaries very soon; a likely challenger for the top party spot
currently held by Sharon is front-runner Binyamin Netanyahu, and MKs
Silvan Shalom and Limor Livnat may also run.

The Labor party appears to be in favor of holding elections at a later
date, in early May. Meretz leader Yossi Sarid said, "Another month here
or there won't make a difference. I am in favor of giving Ehud Barak, who
was chosen by the public for a four-year term, more time to be able to
reach an agreement with the Palestinians." The second and third readings
of the bill for new elections will be prepared and voted on within the
coming weeks.

The Knesset Law Committee will also debate proposed legislation to cancel
the personal election of the Prime Minister, and restore the old system in
which the electorate votes only for a party. Minister Dalia Itzik and MK
Weizman Shiri - two Labor party loyalists of Ehud Barak - collected 21
Labor MK signatures in favor of doing away with the direct-election
system; only Barak and Minister Chaim Ramon did not sign. Shiri said that
Barak would not object to the party's decision. Minister Itzik explained
today that the public "chose Barak by a wide margin [56%], but did not
give him the proper tools with which to govern, because it gave his party
only 23 out of 120 Knesset seats. The system must be changed."

Background: Each political party fields a list of Knesset candidates
during the election campaign. Until 1996, Israelis voted only for a
political party, and the President of the State would then choose one MK -
usually the head of the largest party - to form a government. In the last
two elections, however, two votes were held: one for the Knesset party,
and one for Prime Minister. Dr. Asher Cohen of Bar Ilan University
explained today the faults of the direct-election system:
"It was supposed to lend more stability to the system, but it didn't -
each of the last two governments were toppled in mid-term, and this will
be our third election in five years. In addition, there is no large
party; in 1981, the two large parties comprised 95 Knesset seats, but
within less than 20 years they lost more than half of this number, and
most of these were lost in the last two elections. The problem is that
the division of votes does not allow for one large party to lead; the
governing party cannot effectively coordinate its actions with the smaller
parties in its bloc - instead, it goes from one coalition crisis to
another, with the small parties making constant demands. This is bad for
democracy, and does not allow the government to govern. This is a direct
result of allowing the voter to vote separately for Prime Minister and for
a sectarian party; each small party said, 'Vote for whomever you want for
Prime Minister, but then vote for [us]...'"
"There must be a new system that will somehow strengthen the large
parties... In addition, another desired improvement would be to stipulate
that a majority of 61 MKs is not sufficient to topple the government; a
special majority of 75 or more MKs should be necessary, in order to make
it clear that holding new elections is no small matter... A leader should
be able to know that he has four years in power, and this would help his
long-range planning."

2. THE RUSH TO CONCLUDE - OR HEAD OFF - AN AGREEMENT
A bill forbidding the head of a minority government from signing
diplomatic agreements will be voted on in the Knesset Law Committee next
Monday. This would preclude Ehud Barak, who currently heads a
government
representing two parties and only 32 seats in the Knesset, from signing an
agreement with the Palestinians before the next elections. The bill's
sponsor, MK Benny Elon (National Union-Yisrael Beiteinu), told Arutz-7's
Yosef Zalmanson today that although Shas voted against an early
presentation of the bill last month, its MKs will vote in favor of it this
time. Elon expressed confidence that even if the bill's passage into law
takes some time - it must pass three readings after Monday's committee
vote - any agreement that Barak signs in the interim will not be approved
by the Supreme Court, in light of the ongoing process of legislation.

Signs are increasing showing that Barak is in fact striving to reach an
agreement. Contacts between Barak's and Arafat's offices are continuing
seriously, and PA senior figures say that Barak has hinted that he is
willing to make more concessions - including allowing international
observers in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza. The Yesha Council says that Ehud
Barak has lost his mandate from the nation, and that any agreement he
reaches is illegitimate and will not obligate the country. The Council
demands that he not conduct any diplomatic negotiations.

Former IDF Chief of Staff Rafael Eitan (Raful) said today, "There is no
agreement that any Israeli leader can reach with the Palestinians that
will enable us to stay alive. The Arabs don't want us here - we are a
stranger in their midst, and they don't need us here, and they've been
trying to get rid of us for the last 150 years, and they will continue
doing so." Raful also noted, "The problem is that though the nation is
strong and pioneering, there is no leadership that can help it bring this
out..."

3. ISRAELI CRITICALLY WOUNDED; VIOLENCE CONTINUES AS USUAL
An Israeli citizen was critically wounded late this afternoon when he was
shot by Palestinian terrorists near the Arab village Osrin, not far from
Tapuach. He was shot in the stomach; emergency medical crews treated
him
on site, and he was flown to a Tel Aviv hospital for further treatment.
Ariel Jerafi of Petach Tikvah was killed this past Friday in a similar
attack in the same location.

An IDF force killed four terrorists earlier today, in an attempted
terrorist attack outside of Gaza. A passing IDF patrol detected three
terrorists who infiltrated over the border from Gaza, and sent them
scurrying back with gunfire. Palestinians then shot at the Israelis from
within Gaza, and the soldiers returned fire, killing four. A search of
the area showed that the terrorists were in advanced stages of preparing
an explosive device.

Another bomb exploded in the hands of the terrorist who attempted to place
it on a road leading to Hevron. He was seriously wounded, and two other
terrorists were lightly hurt.

In other, more minor violence today, violent rioting by large Palestinian
crowds began early this afternoon at Ayosh Junction. Palestinians fired
at Rachel's Tomb, from within a position in Palestinian-controlled area.
No one was hurt, and IDF soldiers did not return fire. There was shooting
at Shdemah near Bethlehem, road-closing riots on the Jordan Valley
highway, and rock-throwing on the Itamar-Elon Moreh road, Shavei Shomron,
Tekoa, and along the Jerusalem-Gush Etzion highway.

Last night there was shooting and other attacks at the industrial area in
Tulkarm, the Jewish Community in Hevron, Psagot, Ofer Base near Ramallah,
the Halhoul bypass road, two intersections on the Jenin bypass road, Dagan
Hilltop in Efrat, Elon Moreh, Gaza, and elsewhere.

4. HELP FOR THE COMMUNITIES
Finance Minister Avraham Shochat has issued instructions for the transfer
of 20 million shekels to the local councils in Judea and Samaria, to cover
special costs that have arisen as a result of the sorry security
situation. The expenses include additional social work and psychological
services. Shochat will visit Gush Katif tomorrow; Minister Rabbi Michael
Melchior visited Psagot and Eli today.

5. UNITY ON THE RIGHT
National Religious Party head Rabbi Yitzchak Levy met today with MK Tzvi
Hendel (National Union), to discuss the possibility of "broadening" the
national front and uniting it into one ticket for the coming elections.
Hendel and Chanan Porat split off from the NRP almost two years ago, on
the backdrop of the NRP's support of Netanyahu. Hendel and Levy agreed to
meet again. MK Rabbi Benny Elon (National Union) also said yesterday that
he hopes a broad "National Camp" ticket will form.

6. LYNCHING-VICTIM FAMILY SUES P.A.
The family of Vadim Norvitch, one of two reserves soldier who were
brutally lynched in Ramallah two months ago, petitioned in court today for
the freezing of funds that the Israeli government is expected to turn over
to the Palestinian Authority. The petition was made in the course of the
family's suit against the Palestinian police for the sum of NIS 64 million
for his murder.

The plaintiffs, represented by Atty. Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, contend that
the Palestinians unlawfully imprisoned Norvitch and his fellow soldier
Yosef Avrahami, brought them to Ramallah, and then actively participated
in their murder in a Palestinian Police station. The Oslo Accords
stipulate that custom fees and taxes owed to the Palestinian Authority by
Arab workers in Israel are collected and transferred monthly to the PA by
Israel. Leitner explained to Arutz-7 today that the defendant - the PA -
is liable to cease existing in the coming weeks upon the declaration of a
Palestinian state, "and this is why we are asking that at least 64 million
shekels - out of Israel's next scheduled payment of over 100 million
shekels - be frozen." The court ruled that there is no rush on the lien,
and that another hearing on the suit will be heard next week. Leitner
said she did not when Israel will be making its next payment to the PA; it
was later announced that Israel had transferred 35 million shekels to the
PA today.

7. TEMPLE MOUNT CLOSURE CONTINUES
The Supreme Court decided this morning not to intervene in the police
decision not to allow Jewish worship on the Temple Mount. The judges said
that when the Jerusalem Police Commissioner decides that Jews can pray
there, he would allow them to do so. One of those who filed the suit,
Amanah Settlement Organization's treasurer, Moshe Yogev, said, "We were
thrown out of Joseph's Tomb; the Shalom al Yisrael synagogue in Jericho
was burnt; Kever Rachel is practically off-limits; and now even Temple
Mount? The only thing that's left is the Machpelah Cave in Hevron, which
we have fought for - apparently the only thing that works is force, even
for such a basic and fundamental thing as this."

8. PROTEST CAMP DECLARED "CLOSED ZONE"
A protest encampment outside Avnei Hefetz - a Jewish community in
northwestern-Shomron - was declared a closed military zone this afternoon,
and the protestors were forced to leave. Eli Rosenfeld, a member of the
Avnei Hefetz secretariat, told Arutz-7 today: "We cannot tolerate a
situation in which we are shot at all the time, and the army does nothing.
Yesterday's attack, in which Palestinians shot from a car at a passing
Jewish car and miraculously did not kill him, was the seventh such
attack... We brought tents and generators here, but around 1 PM, army
orders arrived, declaring the area a closed military zone... We told the
army that we would be willing to leave the site, but if the army does not
do what it should to protect us, we will return." Another resident noted,
"It's interesting that the army has enough manpower to come and evacuate
us, but not enough to station a force in this very site to prevent the
attacks from recurring."

9. WHY DAHLAN ACTED UP
Arutz-7 correspondent Haggai Huberman had something to say about
General
Security Service head Avi Dichter's statement today that "Palestinian
security leaders Muhammad Dahlan and Jibril Rajoub are not responsible for
recent terrorist attacks." Huberman said that regarding Dahlan, "such a
statement is very strange, as I have information tying Dahlan very closely
with many of the recent attacks - even if most or all of them ended with
no casualties. For instance, the murder in the Kfar Darom greenhouses [of
St.-Sgt. Baruch Snir Flum on Nov. 18] by a Palestinian policeman who was
then posthumously promoted by two ranks - Dahlan did not hide the fact
that it was his man who did it... The only way I can explain Dichter's
statement is in the fact of Dahlan's close personal relations with leading
Israeli defense figures; O.C. Southern Commander Maj.-Gen. Yom Tov
Samiyeh
and Dahlan have visited each other's homes, and they have had very good
security cooperation in the past. However, after Israel evacuated
Joseph's Tomb, Dahlan said that his next target was the Netzarim Junction,
but he failed to do this, and not only that, Israel destroyed the PA's
'twin towers' there. This made Dahlan look very bad, compared to Rajoub,
who had succeeded in Joseph's Tomb and Mt. Eval - so he then cut off all
ties with the Israelis and ordered the terrorist attacks."

10. SECURITY SHORTS
Seven Israeli-Arabs of the northern Galilee, including four members of
 one
family, are accused of aiding Hizbullah. A Haifa court permitted for
publication today the fact that the seven established an underground cell,
following Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon six months ago. They were in
secret contact with a Hizbullah commander across the border. The
commander told two of the Israeli-Arabs that he was a partner to the
kidnapping of the three IDF soldiers seven weeks ago...
In a surprise move, Israel released the Secretary-General of the
Palestinian National Struggle from prison today. Balal Abu Hamed is the

Pinning Jesus Down

The matches are conducted in churches, not sports arenas. The wrestlers
have the usual catchy names, but with a biblical twist--Jesus Freak, Angel,
Apocalypse and the Beast. And every fight night ends with the wrestlers
huddled in the ring for prayers. It's clearly not the World Wrestling Federation.

The obscenities and sexuality of the World Wrestling Federation offended
Rob Vaughn, a former college football player and Sundary school teacher,
now known as Jesus Freak. And yet he recognized wrestling's great appeal
to teenagers. So he created the Christian Wrestling Federation, a nonprofit
touring group that travels from church to church in northern Texas, trying to
attract teens to church...

"I've never seen wrestling at church before," 16-year-old Stephen Cade told
the Dallas Morning News after the opening night fight, held at the Family
Cathedral of Praise, a non-denominational church in Mesquite, Texas. "But
it's fun to watch, and it's for Jesus Christ. It'll get people to come to church
more often."

Subject: [bprlist] Berkeley demonstrators block speech by Netanyahu
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>

                         Berkeley
                         demonstrators block
                         speech by former
                         Israeli prime minister

                         BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -- Former
                         Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu was forced to cancel a
                         speech Tuesday night when
                         hundreds of rowdy protesters blocked
                         the entrance to the Berkeley
                         Community Theater.

More than 2,000 people with tickets
waited in vain to enter the theater as
the noisy mob waved signs and
                         howled slogans through bullhorns.

The address was finally canceled at
                         about 8:15 p.m. with organizers
                         saying Netanyahu's safety could not
                         be guaranteed.

While Berkeley is known as the home
of the Free Speech Movement, one
person in the crowd said she didn't
                         care.

"I don't believe in free speech for war
                         criminals," Lori Berlin said.

                         Netanyahu, a conservative and a
                         hawk, became Israel's youngest
prime minister in 1996. Critics say he
was an impediment to peace and he
lost his post last year to Ehud Barak.

There's no word yet on whether
Netanyahu will keep two other Bay
Area dates, one in San Rafael and the
                         other in San Mateo.
