 UN debates condemning Israel

                  By Shlomo Shamir
                  Ha'aretz Correspondent and Reuters

NEW YORK - The United States intends to take a firm stance against Israel
in the United Nations Security Council, which began its deliberations
yesterday, diplomatic sources at UN headquarters said.

However, the American diplomats said in unofficial conversations that they
would oppose an official resolution condemning Israel, or even any symbolic
declaration by the council's rotating president that might suggest an
imbalanced stance on the issue of responsibility for the wave of violence in
the territories.

Following six hours of negotiations behind closed doors, U.S. envoy Nancy
Soderberg said, "We had a long discussion about a statement by the
[council's] president, and there just wasn't enough consensus to agree on it.
We will go back today."

Soderberg, who diplomats said was in telephone contact with U.S. Middle
East peace envoy Dennis Ross, had agreed to a statement that would
condemn "excessive use of force against Palestinian civilians," according to
one draft. However, the sources said, she would not accuse Israel of
committing breaches of the 1949 Fourth Geneva Convention, which deals
with protecting civilians in a time of war and has provisions applying to
occupied territories.

Senior diplomats at the UN predicted yesterday that Israel will be severely
criticized and blame will be laid squarely on it as the instigator of the
violence. In addition, Israel will also be attacked for its "extreme response" to
the disturbances.

Nasser al-Kidwa, the Palestinian UN observer, indicated that he would prefer
no statement rather than a weak one that did not mention the Geneva
Convention. "We will absolutely not accept any position by the council that
would harm our national interest," Al-Kidwa said.

The council is not expected to reach an agreement on a statement until U.S.
Secretary of State Madeleine Albright meets in Paris today with Prime
Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat, and
perhaps not until a subsequent meeting in Cairo on Thursday, which will be
hosted by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Missing Pregnant Woman Found Dead
By M.R. Kropko
Associated Press Writer
Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000; 12:52 p.m. EDT

RAVENNA, Ohio –– A pregnant woman was found dead early Tuesday, her
abdomen sliced open and her baby taken, and the woman suspected of
removing the baby shot herself to death when police arrived to question
her, authorities said.

After 23-year-old Theresa Andrews was discovered in a shallow grave,
Portage County Coroner Roger Marcial said he did not know whether
Andrews was alive when the baby was cut out of her – nor were there any
immediate indications how she died. An autopsy was planned.

Authorities said the baby boy was found healthy. Prosecutor Victor
Vigluicci said the baby probably was born Sept. 27, the day Andrews
disappeared.

Authorities said Michelle Bica, 39, took the baby but wouldn't provide
details.

Police had returned to Bica's house Monday night after questioning her
earlier in the day about cell phone calls she had made to the Andrews'
home Sept. 27.

As officers arrived, they heard what sounded like a gunshot and Bica's
husband, Thomas, shouting her name. They entered an upstairs bedroom and
found her shot to death. An autopsy is pending, but Vigluicci said she
shot herself.

The baby boy was in a nursery in another room.

Andrews' body was found about two hours later, buried in a shallow grave
in the unattached garage of the small, white colonial style house in
Ravenna, 32 miles southeast of Cleveland.

The baby was taken to a hospital and listed in good condition.

Vigluicci said investigators are trying to determine whether Bica
recently had a miscarriage. He said there was no sign she had given
birth.

Thomas Bica, 41, a corrections officer for the Portage County Sheriff's
Department, was questioned and released Tuesday morning.

"We felt there were no charges we could hold him on at this time,"
Vigluicci said.

On the day she disappeared, Theresa Andrews had paged her husband, Jon,
at work and said a woman had called inquiring about a 1999 Jeep Wrangler
they were trying to sell.

Andrews, a sheet-metal worker, told police that he called home at lunch
to see how the potential sale went but no one answered. When he got home
at 4:30 p.m., the house was open, the vehicle gone and his wife missing.

Police found the vehicle about a block away.

Biochips and the Human Genome

Now that people have been illuminized and demoralized to the extent that
they have, it is time for the Masterminds of the Illuminati Great Conspiracy to
move quickly with their high technology to capture all of humanity and
confine them to a new electronic way of life with no privacy nor individuality.
On Friday, June 30, 2000, President Clinton signed into law the 'Digital
signature Bill.' This is the first bill signed into law by e-signing. President
Clinton inserted his 'smart card' into the computer and punched in his dog's
name 'Buddy' as the password. In a few moments, the computer screen
said, 'The Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act is
now law.' Under that was Clinton's signature, and beneath his name was the
Presidential seal. This bill makes electronic signatures as valid and as
legally binding as handwritten signatures! People can now be legally bound
without ever touching a pen, and even though the proponents of this bill boast
of safeguards, I don't trust computers or those who operate them in the realm
of the Antichrist system. Who is to say what can be manufactured, edited,
and altered with your name electronically attached to it when the 'Beast'
controls the cyberworld? It is no longer a matter of 'pen in hand,' and you
may well find out that you have agreed to something by 'e-signature' that you
have never heard of before. Where is the protest? Why have people become
so docile? Can we and should we trust electronic devices to rule over such
large segments of our life?

Recently, a company known as McAfee.com has been running full page ads
in the USA Today newspaper. The ad features an offer for the company to
completely manage your computer for you. The management of your
computer is so complete that all of the latest software and upgrades are
automatically downloaded to your computer. You also receive diagnosis and
repairs of any problems and so on. The ad also features a large picture of an
old witch with hundreds of candles burning behind her. In front of her is
printed the following computer address:
www.formlessphantomsfixmycomputer.com.'

In the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, meter readers are being eliminated.
Minicomputers have been installed in water meters, which emit radio signals.
As a computer equipped van drives down the street, 48 meters can be read
at the same time. We must ask what else are they reading from other
devices that we purchased and brought into our homes. The old saying 'Big
Brother is watching you' has never been more true than right now. Everything
is moving so quickly, and much prayer is in order!

We have also learned that Motorola and Packard Instrument Company have
been working with the US Department of Energy's Argonne National
Laboratory to mass-produce biochips. The United States Government,
without informing the American public, has ordered the mass production of
these 'biochips,' which can be inserted under the skin of people and can be
read by other devices. The chip, when inserted in the body, can perform
thousands of biological reactions including decoding genes and DNA
according to Dr. Andrei Mirzabekov, a Russian biologist, who is working on
the project. All of this is happenign at the same time that scientists have
finished their decoding of the sequence of life by using computers to place
3.1 billion subunits of DNA into correct sequence and order. It is the very
essence of life that is being played with, and scientists say that it is the
greatest breakthrough since moveable type. By rearranging and modifying
the human genome, scientists believe they can produce made-to-order
human beings. How far will the Almightly allow this to go? We are most
assuredly nearing the end.

Subject: [BPR] - A chip in the old block
From: bpr-list@philologos.org("Moza")
Date: Wed, 4 Oct 2000 10:19:40 -0400

4 OCTOBER 2000 SCOTLAND'S NATIONAL
NEWSPAPER ON THE WEB

A chip in the old block

William Peakin

Have you ever wondered if there is a guardian angel watching over your
shoulder? Speculate no more: later this month in New York a digital
version you can carry with you will be unveiled.

It is a tiny chip implanted under the skin which will monitor your
body´s vital signs - heart beat, temperature, blood-sugar levels and so
on - send data to a hospital or doctor´s computer and, via satellite,
will pinpoint your location if you need to be alerted to a problem.

It´s a simple enough operation and one that would usually be performed
under local anaesthetic. The makers, Applied Digital Solutions, a
Florida- based company, believe that their so-called Digital Angel will
also be able to locate adults or children in the event of being
kidnapped, pinpoint people lost in avalanches, monitor soldiers in
combat, check the whereabouts of criminals on parole, track livestock
and foodstuffs and trace valuables. The company recently took over one
of America´s leading providers of microchip identification for pets.

A significant market is also envisaged in e-commerce; the chip could
also store financial information and be used to confirm the identity of
consumers. Those who did not want to wear it, say ADS, might keep it in
their computer.

Many tracking and monitoring technologies have previously been patented
and marketed but, say ADS, "all are unsuitable for widespread tracking,
recovery and identification of people due to a variety of limitations."
These include unwieldy size, maintenance requirements, insufficient or
inconvenient power supply and problems in activating the device. But ADS
believes it has overcome those difficulties.

When implanted under the skin, the device is powered electromechanically
through the movement of muscles, and it can be activated either by the
wearer or by a remote monitoring facility. One feature even is expected
to allow the wearer to control the device to some degree.

"This technology relates directly to the exploding wireless
marketplace," says Richard Sullivan, chairman of ADS. "We´ll be
demonstrating for the first time ever that wireless telecommunications
systems and bio-sensor devices, capable of measuring and transmitting
critical body function data, can be successfully linked together with
GPS [global positioning satellite] technology and integrated with the
internet."

Those attending the demonstration in New York City will see a working,
multimedia demonstration of the implant. The miniature sensor equipped
with a tiny antenna will capture and wirelessly transmit a person´s
vital body- function data, such as body temperature or pulse, to an
internet-integrated ground station.

In addition, the antenna will receive information regarding the location
of the individual from the GPS satellite. Both sets of data - medical
information and location - will then be wirelessly transmitted to the
ground station and made available on Web-enabled desktop, laptop or
wireless devices.

ADS have secured patents for the chip, which will be powered by the
body´s own energy, and expect to generate a worldwide market worth £500
million.

"We believe its potential for improving individual and e-business
security and enhancing the quality of life for millions of people is
virtually limitless," says Sullivan.

Initially the chip will simply be worn close to the body - the company
is working with watch and mobile phone manufacturers, for example - but
approval for implants will be sought from America´s food and drug
administration.

Even before its launch the Digital Angel has sparked debate over its
possible misuse, from civil rights campaigners who regard it as
Orwellian. "I think most people would be repulsed by the idea. This is
just a sort of modern version of tattooing people, something that for
obvious reasons - the Nazis tattooed numbers on people - no-one
proposes," said Bob Gellman, a Washington privacy consultant. "I´m sure
there´s a strong argument that implanting a chip in a person is
unconstitutional. It would [in the case of criminals] be cruel and
unusual punishment."

According to Emily Whitfield, a spokeswoman for the American Civil
Liberties Union: "This is a situation that can go in the blink of an eye
from being voluntary to being mandatory." The idea has already made a
positive appearance in Hollywood, when Tom Cruise implanted a tracking
device in the foot of a co-star in Mission Impossible II.

It probably won´t be long before the darker side gets an airing, perhaps
starring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone, where the jealous husband
gives an opulent anniversary watch with the chip inside it to his
cheating wife, so he can obsessively monitor her movements, her body
temperature, the very acceleration of the pounding of her heart rate ...
until she figures it out, and puts the chip to work against him.

Some Christian groups even liken the Digital Angel to "the mark of the
beast". But Dr Peter Zhou, president and chief scientist at
DigitalAngel.net, Inc, a subsidiary of ADS, counters: "I am a Christian,
but I don´t think [that argument] makes sense. The purpose of the device
is to save your life and improve the quality of life. There´s no
connection to the Bible."

Zhou adds: "I´m particularly excited about Digital Angel´s ability to
save lives by remotely monitoring the medical conditions of at-risk
patients and providing emergency rescue units with the person´s exact
location. This will be a connection from yourself to the electronic
world. It will be your guardian, protector. It will bring good things to
you. We will be a hybrid of electronic intelligence and our own soul."

The New York Times recently asked experts to speculate on what the
future might hold using similar technology to the Digital Angel. One
engineer suggested a chip encoded with our unique genetic sequence "for
perfect identification in matters medical, official, criminal or
otherwise."

Some of the other possibilities: a "decoder" ring, an implant in the
human iris to be read with a retinal scanner, and even an oval-shaped
"genegg" for the belly button.

Subject: [BPR] - On the chasm between scientists and non-scientists
From: bpr-list@philologos.org("Moza")
Date: Wed, 4 Oct 2000 10:21:50 -0400

FROM THE SCIENCEWEEK ARCHIVE:
ON THE CHASM BETWEEN SCIENTISTS AND NON-SCIENTISTS
In an essay in the journal *Science* on the gap between scientist
and non-scientist, the science journalist Takashi Tachibana makes
the following points: 1) In 1959 C.P. Snow presented the idea
that the chasm between scientists and literary intellectuals was
so vast that they could not communicate with each other. After
nearly 40 years, the situation has only grown worse. 2) The
current level of basic scientific knowledge is so low that it is
difficult to interest even the brightest layman or non-science
student in what modern science is doing. The chasm between
scientist and non-scientist has widened to become a gulf. 3) The
impact of the 20th century revolutions in physics and molecular
biology has been profound: the Universe looks different, Life is
different. But this impact has not been as thorough as it might
have been, because while those with a more comprehensive
scientific education can recognize that something important has
happened, the great majority of people do not even realize that a
fundamental shift has occurred. 4) Most non-scientists who like
to think of themselves as knowledgeable about modern science
really know only about technologies -- and specifically those
technologies considered likely to bring economic profits in the
short term. This is also the mind-set of most government
officials and lawmakers who consider themselves sympathetic to
science and technology budget requests. Science for homo
economicus and homo faber is flourishing, while science for Homo
sapiens is diminishing. 5) We may one day wake up to find
barbarians at the gate in the form of an upsurge in "new" science
-- that is, not science at all -- promoted by one or the other
fundamentalist religion or occultist group ready to lead us into
a new Dark Age. The author concludes: "What we must urgently do
is renovate education and significantly raise the basic level of
scientific knowledge, for, as C.P. Snow warned four decades ago,
we must 'educate ourselves or perish'".

ISRAEL CRISIS-- "WORST CIVIL DISTURBANCES SINCE 1948""
-- ON-LOCATION REPORT--- BY AVNER BOSKEY

BY AVNER BOSKEY
Avner's email: psalm67@netvision.net.il
 Tuesday, October 03, 2000 10:06 AM

Shalom!

Peace to you from the land of Israel.

Television screens are once again convulsed by images of violent
Palestinian mobs burning tires and attacking Israeli police and army
with submachine guns, rocks, grenades and RPGs. Israeli soldiers are
shown responding with tear gas, rubber bullets and live fire, while
attack helicopters and tanks await potential escalation. The images
are
compelling and distressing, and the world's media(like CNN and BBC)
confidently present the analyses of their Middle East supposed experts
who (not surprisingly) ascribe nearly all of the blame for the current
mob violence to Israel.

How can believers far removed from this swirling vortex make sense of
what is true and what is propaganda, what is tragic and what is evil?
This letter is an attempt to help in this process.

Four main points are being consistently communicated by the world
media
throughout this crisis. Let's consider these claims:

CLAIM NUMBER ONE

1. "The riots are an understandable reaction to a flagrant Israeli
provocation, the visit of Ariel Sharon (Israeli Likud party leader) to
the Haram a-Sharif/Temple Mount on Thursday September 28. This was a
desecration of a Moslem mosque/holy place."

Israeli politicians have visited this area many times, as has Sharon.
These visits happen all the time. MKs (members of Knesset, Israel's
parliament) have the legal right to go anywhere at any time with full
legal protection and immunity. As well, Israeli Jews and non-Moslem
tourists from all over the world visit this site daily in the hundreds
of thousands. An Israeli police post is located on the northwestern
corner of the compound, and armed Israeli soldiers and police
regularly
patrol the compound. The explosion which was triggered has nothing to
do
with non-Moslems or Israelis visiting the site, but everything to do
with a strategic decision by the Palestinian Authority to use violence
to achieve a new status quo in the so-called peace negotiations.

In point of fact, Sharon never entered the mosques, but toured the
area
outside of the mosques. This plaza is part of the area of Mount
Moriah,
where the Bible says (and archeology confirms) that Solomon's and
Herod's Temple stood, where the Jewish Jesus came to teach and pray.
This area is promised to the Jewish people as the heart of their
biblical inheritance, and will be the focus of worldwide pilgrimage
and
devotion at the end of days (cf., Isa.2:1-3; 4:2-6; 56:3-8; 65:18-24;
Jer.3:19; 31:4-14; Psa.102:21-22; Ezek.43:6-7; 47:9-12; Zech. 8:20-23;
14:20-21) . From the perspective of the Scriptures, Islam has long
attempted to replace the Jewish people on what the Bible describes as
'ground zero', the very place where the Messiah of Israel will
establish
His glorious throne.

When the Islamic country of Jordan was in charge of the Temple Mount,
Jews were not allowed up to visit the compound. The same was true
under
Islamic Turkish rule. It has always been the ardent and stated desire
of
the Moslem Waqf (Islamic council which oversees activities on the
Temple
Mount) to prevent Christians and Jews from having access to this area.
They dream of the day when the Mount will have a status similar to
Saudi
Arabia (where no Jews are allowed to visit) and Mecca (where
non-Moslems
are forbidden from approaching). To be frank, the leaders of Islam in
Jerusalem preach publicly about the day prophesied in the Koran when
all
Jews on the earth will be massacred by all faithful Moslems. This is
the
world view that continues to enflame many Islamic hearts in the Middle
East, and the spiritual forces behind this world view which animate
and
activate the rioters.

CLAIM NUMBER TWO

2. "The riots were spontaneous, and Arafat has no control over these
people. The riots are the result of Israeli violations of Islamic
sensibilities."

Prior to Sharon's visit, on Wednesday Sept 27 two explosive devices
were
electronically detonated by Palestinian terrorists near Netzarim, a
Jewish farming community in the Gaza Strip, mortally wounding David
Biri
a 19 year old Israeli army medic and Jerusalem resident. Armed Arabs
then attacked the Israeli soldiers present with submachine guns.
Israeli
Army (IDF) officials were concerned that Palestinian Authority (PA)
security officials were behind that attack.

On that same day Jibril Rajoub, presently Preventative Security
Service
chief for the PA and former commander of Force 17 (a PLO elite
terrorist
group formerly on the US terrorist watch list) threatened countrywide
riots if Sharon visited the Temple Mount. "The visit is a provocation
which will trigger bloodshed and confrontation . . . If Sharon tries
to
enter the Haram a-Sharif, the Moslems will stop him" said Rajoub. On
the same day Marwan Barghouteh, a senior Fatah (PLO) leader said that
should riots erupt and Palestinians get injured, the protests will
spread to the West Bank and Gaza and turn violent.

During Sharon's visit on Thursday Sept 28, three Arab MKs present on
the
Mount led chants of "murderer, out!" against Sharon, stirring up
Moslem
bystanders. After Sharon left, Palestinians began throwing stones,
bottles and chairs at police, who responded with tear gas. Soon after
the visit, Arafat's spokesman Nabil Abu Rudaineh stated, "Sharon's
visit
was an incitement to terror which can lead to religious
confrontation."
Arafat then called Sharon's visit "a dangerous process conducted by
Sharon against Islamic sacred places." He called upon Arab and Moslem
states to take action to protect the site. Faisal Husseini, senior PA
official in charge of Jerusalem, said, "Sharon thought that this place
belongs to the Israelis, but...(this) was clear proof to all the world
that the Israelis have no sovereignty here". This was followed by a
statement by the Moslem Brotherhood Movement's Central Committee of
Moslem Scholars in the Islamic Action Front Party in Jordan, which
stated, "This is an atrocious act which requires Moslem and Arab
leaders
to declare jihad to liberate ... the shrines in Jerusalem" and called
for "shedding the blood of those Jews if they implement their
outrageous
crime and establish their alleged temple in the yards of the blessed
Al-Aksa Mosque."

That same Thursday another roadside bomb was again detonated against
an
IDF jeep patrol in the Gaza Strip.

On Friday Sept 29 an early morning joint jeep patrol of Israeli and PA
soldiers (part of the Oslo peace process security framework) sipped
coffee together for 20 minutes in the Kalkiliya area before continuing
on patrol. As the Israelis returned to their jeeps, one of the PA
soldiers Nail Suliman walked over to the Israeli jeep, shouted "Allahu
akbar!" (Allah is great) while emptying his gun into the heart of one
of
the soldiers, Yossi Tabaja, a 27-year old immigrant from Ethiopia,
killing him and wounding the Israeli soldier sitting next to him. The
PA
soldier then escaped to the PA-controlled area, where he turned
himself
over to Jibril Rajoub's forces and was temporarily detained (pending a
quick trial and soon release by the PA, as is the norm in these
matters). PA forces immediately stated that IDF forces had provoked
Suliman into murdering them.

A senior Fatah (PLO) leader has stated, "Fatah's position is clear, we
will stop the riots when the Israelis withdraw". At another meeting
with
Israeli security officials, it is said that Jibril Rajoub said that he
would stop the shooting if the Israelis apologized for the earlier
deaths, but that the Israelis refused to apologize. A senior Israeli
security source who participated in that meeting said, "This just
shows
that they had the power to control the situation."

The fact that Arafat's top official echelons are on record with
prophesied warnings of coming riots and promising that they will not
stop them, the atmosphere created by Islamic declarations of jihad,
the
cries of "death to the Jews" that occurred during these riots - all
these clearly reveal that events have not spun out of control. On the
contrary, these riots and the ensuing deaths of Palestinian rioters
are
a deliberate PA strategy, employed often in the past, which uses
civilian casualties as a bargaining tool. The IDF, which has a longer
history in dealing with Arafat than do most newsmen, are on record in
their conclusion that Arafat has full control over these events.
Guarded
reference has been made in the Israeli media to interception of sigint
(signal intelligence) where Arafat has been urging on riot leaders to
attack Israeli forces.

CLAIM NUMBER THREE

3. "Israelis were the first to shoot, and they perpetrated a massacre
of
young children, ambulance drivers and young men. They did not use
proper
anti-riot control but shot to kill. As France's Chirac said, 'One does
not respond to emotions with guns.'"

The first riots occurred Thursday Sept 28 on the Temple Mount after
Ariel Sharon departed. Thirty Israeli policemen and four Palestinians
were lightly wounded. One round of tear gas was fired by Israeli
police
at the Palestinian rioters.

On Friday Sept 29 just after 1 p.m. as Moslem worshippers began to
exit
the mosques on the Temple Mount, hundreds of Palestinian Moslems tried
to overpower Israeli Border Patrol guards stationed near the Mugrabi
Gate on the Temple Mount and began to throw stones over the retaining
wall (approximately 25 feet high) down onto Jewish worshippers 120
feet
below at the Western Wall. With over 22,000 Moslems on the Mount the
situation was explosive. Large numbers of Moslems began to rush the
Mugrabi Gate in order to attack Jewish worshippers below, stoning and
wounding Jerusalem police chief Cmdr. Yair Yitzhaki in the process. At
that point IDF Border Patrol reinforcements entered the Mount and
began
to disperse the rioters, first using rubber bullets and tear gas.
Israeli Police Inspector-General Yehuda Wilk said that police mainly
fired rubber-coated steel pellets, but that some police snipers also
fired live rounds, targeting violent protesters whom they felt were
endangering the lives of Israeli police officers. More than 100
Palestinians were wounded and four were killed. Over the weekend 58
Palestinian youths were also arrested by Israeli police in Jerusalem
for
stone throwing incidents and firebomb attacks. During the riot and
also
on Saturday, Moslem religious leaders called from the loudspeakers of
the mosques for a jihad, a holy war against Israel.

During the past days of rioting 4 of the Israeli Magen David Adom (Red
Star of David, equivalent to the American Red Cross) mobile intensive
care units and 11 ambulances were shot at, damaged or destroyed by
rioting Palestinians. During an intense firefight between Palestinians
armed with machine guns (who were attacking the the Netzarim Israeli
outpost in the Gaza Strip, close to where the three roadside bombs
were
detonated against Israeli jeeps) and Israeli soldiers defending the
post, a 12-year old boy, Mohammed Jamal Aldura, and his father were
caught in the middle of a murderous crossfire. The boy was shot dead
and
his father was wounded. It is not clear by what bullets the boy was
killed, nor does that fact matter for his father and family. Some
bystanders said that Mohammed was participating in the stoning of the
IDF outpost when his father came to drag him home before he got hurt.
In
any case, this tragedy of war was broadcast across the world as a
French
TV crew was filming in that direction during that moment. The clip was
accompanied by PA officials who were certain that the bullets were
Israeli and that the shooting had been deliberate. In fact, the corner
where the boy and his father were hiding was close to the direct line
of
fire, but due to smoke and fire visibility was severely curtailed for
both sides.

It is frivolous for a French leader like Chirac to suggest to the IDF
that the machine gun attacks that they are facing are 'merely
emotion',
and that the IDF should stand down when faced by thousands of rioters
with murder in their eyes, mouths and hands.

One Israeli official, when asked to comment on whether the Israelis
deserved the rioting, since Sharon's visit was seen as provocative by
the PA. "We say the following: There is freedom of access and worship
on
the Temple Mount (ed. for Moslems only), and Sharon's visit did not
damage the Aksa Mosque in any form whatsoever. But say it was a
provocative act, is this the way to respond? It's like the abusive
husband who says he beat his wife because she burned the food!"

CLAIM NUMBER FOUR

4. "The peace can be restored when the Israelis withdraw from the
Arab
areas in question. Anything less will lead to continued violence."

This is getting to the heart of the matter. During the riots, Arafat
and
his negotiators released unofficial demands for stopping the riots.
(How
can one stop that which one has not started?...) These include Israeli
forces surrendering all outposts which were being attacked and fired
upon by Palestinian forces; an official Israeli apology for having
responded to mob violence and shooting with tear gas, rubber bullets,
etc; total removal of all Israeli forces from the Temple Mount.

What we have here is pure Machiavelli, who once stated that politics
is
simply making war by other means. In Arafat's case, he views the peace
process as a political way to get what he wants and, if that fails, he
abandons the olive branch to pick up the machine gun.

Please pray for Israel's leaders, that the deceiving and seducing
mirage
of peace falsely extended by the PA will be decisively blown away, and
that God-given wisdom, discernment and courage will strengthen and
inform their decisions. Pray for the salvation and safety of the
soldiers, for wisdom and discernment for their commanders, and for
salvation for the many Palestinians who are being led along a path of
destruction and perdition by their evil leaders.

"WORST CIVIL DISTURBANCES SINCE 1948

How have the events of the past few days affected most Israelis? Most
are in shock. The Jerusalem Post has as its headlines today (Tuesday
Oct
3) 'Worst civil disturbances since 1948'. Israelis are concerned about
three separate issues. First, the return to mob violence accompanied
by
PA machine guns is not what was the hoped for result of the Oslo peace
process. If the PA decides to use weapons against Israeli troops even
occasionally, most Israelis would conclude that the peace process is
dead and buried, and that a return to armed conflict is unavoidable.
Second, the participation by some Israeli Arabs in attacks and riots
against Israel's police is considered seditious, as these Arabs are
citizens of Israel. The potential effect of a growing fifth column is
a
red line that Israelis would prefer not to consider, for that would
put
the majority of Israel's Arab citizens (over a million Arabs are
Israeli
citizens) under the shadow of treasonous suspicion. Third, most
Israelis
are too tired to imagine living under continued threat from an openly
hostile PA. Most Israelis had truly hoped that peace was but a
signature
away, and that dreams of calm and prosperity were at hand. There is a
great deal of agony of soul as most Israelis realize that 'it ain't
so'
and that this mild earthquake of riots may be the harbinger of blacker
days ahead.

HOW SHOULD BELIEVERS RESPOND?

How are praying believers to respond? How can we intercede for this
highly explosive situation? First on the biblical priority is to pray
for Israel's salvation. Rom.11:15 says that Israel's salvation will
transform the Middle East and bring life from the dead to all the
peoples of the world. God has purposed to bring life to this people;
the
enemy has purposed to bring death. Pray that God will bring
resurrection
life out of death, salvation out of destruction, and mercy out of
judgment. Pray for God to open the eyes of His people to their
crucified
Messiah, and that He would raise up the mighty Israeli army prophesied
in Ezek 37:10.

Pray for whatever peace can be preserved, be it even a temporary one,
which is based on clear-eyed discernment and courage on the part of
Israeli leaders (2 Tim.2:1-4).

GOD'S PURPOSES FOR ISRAEL

Remember that God's purposes for Israel will triumph, that His plans
for
their good, their welfare and their future will come to pass
(Jer.29:10), and that interceding for Israel's salvation, her entering
into God's magnificent purposes, her call to be a light to the nations
(Isa.49:6-7; Acts 13: 46-47) - all are being opposed by the enemy. Do
not believe the enemy's lies when he suggests that Israel is
"motivated
by pure, unadulterated evil." Instead, stand in the gap and pray for a
beleaguered people whose salvation is the key to world revival.

Crowds flock to see Jesus image
http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_75373.html

Visitors are flocking to a small Australian town to see an image of Jesus
Christ that appears every night on a wall, complete with crown of thorns and
beard.

Cafe owner Shelly Brooks claims Jesus' image is created every evening on the
wall opposite her business by the shadow of a tree.

Ms Brooks, of Port Germein, north of Adelaide, told the Melbourne Age
newspaper she was sitting with her husband when she first saw the outline of
Jesus, which was recognisable due to its long hair, beard, moustache and
crown of thorns.

She said: "I sort of sat there with my husband opposite me and said 'Jesus
Christ,' and he said 'what's the matter now?' and I said 'Jesus Christ'."

Since word got out about the appearance, tourists have been making their way
to Port Germein to see it for themselves.

"They're coming from everywhere, just from word of mouth," said Ms Brooks.

UN warns of all out war in Middle East
http://theage.com.au/news/20001005/A32240-2000Oct4.html
By ROSS DUNN
JERUSALEM
Thursday 5 October 2000

Middle East crisis talks in Paris last night move to Egypt today, as UN
chief Kofi Annan warned that Palestinians and Israelis were on the brink of
"an all out war".

He was speaking before joining the US brokered meeting in Paris between
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

The talks, chaired by US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, were aimed
at halting a week of violence, which has left as many as 58 dead and more
than a 1000 injured.

Mr Annan stressed the seriousness of the situation. "Instead of moving
forward with a peace settlement, we now seem to have almost an all-out war
in a highly populated area.

"It's incumbent on the leaders to really do whatever they can to reign in
the forces and ensure that innocent civilians are not the ones to pay the
price," he said.

After the Paris meeting, Mr Barak and Mr Arafat will travel to the Red Sea
resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for talks to be hosted by Egyptian President Hosni
Mubarak.

Dr Albright is also expected to attend the meeting in Egypt.

The talks come during what appears to be an easing in the level of violence,
although Israel said the worst may be still to come.

Deputy chief-of-staff of the Israeli army, Major-General Moshe Ya'alon, said
an escalation could be expected.

"The climax is still ahead of us and the Israeli defence is ready for any
development," he said.

Israel has agreed to reduce its military presence at points in the occupied
territories where there have been intense friction. Tanks have been pulled
back and other armored vehicles have been positioned so they cannot be seen
from the Palestinian side.

But General Ya'alon said the word "ceasefire" was not the right word to
describe these developments.

"This is not a case of two equal sides that have to put a stop to the firing
between them," he said.

"We are not shooting and taking over territory. We are firing only as
necessary and only in self-defence. Since the start of the wave of violence,
we have reacted to violence against us and are not initiating any violent
operations."

He said Mr Arafat could bring about an end to the violence at any time by
bringing into line the Tanzim, the Palestinian political youth movement
which has been in the thick of the fighting.

But Palestinian leaders insist they are not endangering the Israeli army,
which they say has been using brutal and excessive military power against
their people.

"It's not a war," said senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat. "We are
not shooting them; they are shooting at us and we're dying."

Nearly all of those killed have been Palestinians, many of them
stone-throwing youths who were felled by live bullets, and in some cases
anti-tank missiles and machine-gun fire from helicopter gunships.

Images of the fighting have promoted the belief that Israel is using
excessive force

A missile hit a Palestinian rioter killing him as he stood on a rooftop near
the army outpost at Netzarim in the Gaza Strip.

In the frenzy of rage and grief that followed, one of his friends picked up
some a bloodied body part and waved it widely in his bare hands, as others
shouted: "Allahu Akhbar (God is great)."

But Major-General Giora Eilan, Israel's army chief-of-staff, said that the
army only used heavy firepower in extreme situations such as at the Netzarim
Junction, where soldiers at an outpost are guarding a Jewish settlement.

"We try to use fire only when it is needed but you have to understand that
when there is a position or a settlement with a few soldiers that is
attacked by hundreds of people, sometimes the only way to defend your life
is to use live fire when it happens people are killed," he said.

Subject: [BPR] - Int'l Day of Protest to Stop Militarization of Space
From: bpr-list@philologos.org("Moza")
Date: Wed, 4 Oct 2000 13:21:32 -0400

63 ACTIONS PLANNED FOR OCTOBER 7

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PROTEST TO STOP THE MILITARIZATION OF
SPACE

For Immediate Release Contact: Bruce Gagnon (352)
337-9274

There are now 63 actions planned in 16 countries and 38 U.S. cities for the
October 7 "International Day of Protest to Stop the Militarization of Space."

October 7 events will be the largest worldwide expression opposing the
movement of the arms race into space ever held.

"Our goal is to create a worldwide grassroots democratic debate about the
need to keep space for peace. The October 7 events show that there are
growing numbers of people who want to prevent a new arms race in space,"
said Bruce Gagnon, Coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons &
Nuclear Power in Space.

In addition to the expected resumption of National Missile Defense (NMD)
program testing in early 2001, the Pentagon is now preparing to begin
testing of the Space-based laser (SBL) program. The $30 billion SBL, the
real Reagan-era Star Wars plan, will be tested at either Cape Canaveral AFB,
FL.; Redstone Army Arsenal in Huntsville, AL.; or the Stennis Missile Testing
Center in Mississippi.

"Taken together, the NMD and Space-based laser program reveal that the
U.S.
Space Command's intentions to 'control and dominate' space are not idle
threats," Gagnon said. "The aerospace industry views space as a new
market and
they are working hard to push the arms race into the heavens. With
deployments
of these programs the U.S. will have total military domination of space and
the
earth below."

Bible code research yields seven words

By Melissa Martin

ASHLAND — A Hebrew scholar and a mathematician have found what they call
one of the most significant discoveries in the field of Bible code
research.

Nathan Jacobi, an Ashland scientist and Hebrew teacher, found a
seven-word sentence encoded in the Old Testament book of Isaiah.

"Everybody I´ve shown it to thinks it´s phenomenal," said Jacobi.

The longest code to date had been 13 letters long, but the new code is
22 letters long. "This is almost an Olympic event," he said.

The chances of finding a sentence-length code in a Hebrew text is one
out of 685 billion times 1 bi llion, said Ed Sherman, an actuarial (Ed.
Note: actuary). He owns an Ashland firm that runs insuran ce statistics
for several Fortune 500 companies.

That´s as rare as a blindfolded person finding a single red coin hidden
in a stack of quarters 450- coins deep (Ed. Note: this should have read
450 feet deep) and covering the continental United States, Sherman
said.

"It´s really quite astonishing," he said.

Jacobi and Sherman´s newest code is Shakak Meal Yeshua Shmi Az Sasu
Avim, which is translated into "Gushing over Yeshua was my mighty name
and the clouds rejoiced."

Yeshua is the commonly agreed-upon Hebrew name for Jesus, Jacobi said.
The code was found in Isaiah
53, a text that prophesies the coming of Jesus Christ as messiah (Ed.
 Note: This sentence should h
ave ended “Christians believe”). Scholars attribute the text to a
prophet who lived six centuries b efore Christ was born.

"People ask me if my enthusiasm for this find means that I´m a Christian
now," said Jacobi, who des cribes his spiritual beliefs as neither
Jewish nor Christian.

"I tell them not any more than searching for Holocaust codes about
Hitler makes me a Nazi."

Bible codes are found by searching the Hebrew text for letters at
certain intervals to form words. Sherman and Jacobi use an Israeli
computer program that eliminates spaces between words, then choos es
every third letter, for example, to find hidden messages.

"It´s like breaking down the DNA of the Bible," said Dave Swaney, part
of the Ashland research team . He is editor of Bible Code Digest, the
online magazine that released Jacobi and Sherman´s finding s today.
Rabbi David Zaslow, of Havurah Shir Haddash in Ashland, said he has
great respect for Jacobi, who t eaches Hebrew at the Havurah.

"But I´m not convinced that the Bible codes are anything more than
random and that the body of Shak espeare or Homer´s Odyssey would also
have to be tested to see what alleged codes might appear," Za slow said.

"Judaism does not depend upon God hiding codes inside our sacred text,"
he said.

By its nature, Hebrew is a coded language that draws students to search
for hidden messages, Zaslow
 said.

But whether Jewish or Christian, clergy are often not receptive to Bible
code research, Jacobi said .

For Sherman, who is a Christian, the codes further his belief that the
Bible is the inspired word o f God. He has written an online book
explaining the mathematical tests he applies to Bible code res earch.

"I can´t even begin to fathom how the top cryptologists could do this
kind of stuff," he said. "The re is no way this was written by a human
being."

UN team wants more data on 'saucers'

by :Rainier Allan Ronda 9/24/00

Unable to identify unidentified flying objects (UFOs) seen in the
evening sky over Las Pi=C3=B1as last Sept. 3, scientists from the United
Nations (UN) want more data to explain the sighting.

Last Friday night, the seven-member team led by Dr. Jean Chu viewed a
40-minute video of the phenomenon taken by Antonio Israel.

During the screening, they fired a barrage of questions at Israel like
how the dancing balls of light moved, what the conditions were at the
time, and if he or his neighbors were feeling anything unusual when they
saw the lights.

"It would be interesting if we gather more data, talk to the neighbors
who witnessed it, and find out if residents of other neighboring places
in Metro Manila were able to see them," Chu said.

The scientists inspected Israel's home, Israel said, particularly the
spot where he stood when he filmed the lights, suspected to be
extraterrestrial spaceships by those who saw them.

They also inspected Israel's neighborhood and nearby streets to see if
the lights were caused by anything on the ground.

They asked him anything unusual happened like malfunctioning electrical
or mechanical gadgets or appliances at the time of the UFO sighting.

They were at a loss for words after viewing the video. "Maybe one can't
really say when given just that footage to look at," one scientist told
the STAR when asked if the lights were indeed alien spacecraft.

Chu and her team, in town to study the Philippines' disaster
preparedness, said photos of the UFOs which appeared in the STAR on
Sept. 20 piqued their interest.

Chu stressed that their visit to Israel's home was a private one.

She told him that their field of study also delved into the connection
between strange environmental events and disasters taking place where
the phenomena occurred.

Experts from the Philippine weather bureau were likewise stumped by the
video footage. Israel said he and his neighbors who saw the spectacle
were convinced that the lights were alien spacecraft.

Vatican wants paedophilia declared crime against humanity

VATICAN CITY, Oct 3 (AFP) - Colombian Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo
Tuesday reiterated a Vatican call for paedophilia to be declared a crime
against humanity.

The president of the Papal Council for the Family said paedophilia could be
blamed on "the fact that society has lost its ethical principles".

"First we fill the world with false idols, with truths which are not but on the
contrary are lies, and then we are indignant when faced with shattering
events in which once again children are the victims," he said.

Trujillo was repeating an appeal made by the Holy See during a 1992
congress in Thailand's capital, Bangkok.

The cardinal made the statement Tuesday while answering questions about
recent cases of paedophilia in Italy during a presentation of his programme
for the Family Jubilee which is to take place in Rome from October 14 to 15.

His colleague on the Family Council, fellow Colombian Francisco Gil Hellin
added: "These pathologies result from the fact that we have forgotten the
fundamental points: dignity of the child, the dignity of marriage and dignity of
the family."

"Divorce was the first attack on the family. That opened the door to abortion
which is the first in contempt of children.

"We cannot be indignant today because of these realities, that are the
consquence of past attacks that were applauded by those who described
themselves as liberals and progressives," Hellin said.

World Council of Churches wants all religions to play peace role

GENEVA, Oct 2 (AFP) - The World Council of Churches (WWC) on Monday
said that the Christian, Jewish and Muslim religious communities all had a
role to play in negotiations to try to find a peaceful solution to the current
crisis between Israel and the Palestinians.

The WCC, based in Geneva, underlined in a statement "the conviction ... that
any solution was in the first instance incumbent on directly interested
parties, but that the Christian churches and Jewish and Muslim communities
have a major role to play in the context of the negotiations."

The WCC called on those involved in the crisis to have the "courage to give
up their claims ... to build a city open to everyone, a city of sharing, where
access to the holy sites is open to everyone and the freedom of worship is
guaranteed to believers of all religions."

The WCC is made up of 337 protestant, anglican and orthodox churches.

Saddam ready ''to put an end to Zionism''

                         Weekend News Today
                         Source: Reuters

Wed Oct 4,2000 -- Iraq is ready to "put an end to Zionism" if Arab
rulers do not defend the Palestinians against Israel, President Saddam
Hussein was quoted Wednesday as saying. He accused Arab leaders of
taking a weak stance towards Israel's "massacre" of Palestinians. He
said that Israel should be given a 24-hour ultimatum to stop the
violence, and action should be taken if it is not respected. "Enough is
enough, we should not accept any more humiliation, let us put an end to
Zionism," Saddam told a group of university professors late Tuesday,
official media reported. "If they [Arab rulers] cannot do it, Iraq is
ready to put an end to Zionism," he said. "Let them just give us a piece
of land near Israel and stay at a distance and support us and they will
see how we will put an end to Zionism," Saddam said.

Wed Oct 4,2000 -- Reviving a term from the intifada, the seven-year
Palestinian uprising, the militant Islamic Hamas movement said Wednesday
it has designated Friday, October 6 as a "Day of Rage," to be marked by
protest marches following mid-day prayers, Israel Radio reported.
Israeli security authorities anticipate confrontations between IDF
troops and demonstrators in Jerusalem and throughout the territories,
the radio report said.

Hezbollah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad meet to find common stand on violence

Wed Oct 4,2000 -- The Lebanese daily Al Mustaqabal disclosed Wednesday
that the Hezbollah, the Hamas, the Islamic Jihad and Ahmed Jibril's
General Command of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine,
were holding meetings in an attempt to reach a common stand concerning
the unrest in the West Bank and Gaza in the last few days. The four
organizations have reportedly set up a "central war room" monitoring the
latest developments in the territories. Sources in the Hezbollah and the
Palestinian organizations have been quoted as saying that the tense
relations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority could lead to a
deterioration of the situation along the Israeli-Lebanese border. The
Hezbollah is reportedly supporting the Palestinians in their "Al Aqsa
intifada."

The report on the meetings of these Palestinian organizations comes one
day after the Iranian deputy foreign minister was quoted by the
pan-Arabic paper Al Hayat as "not denying" that Iran was playing an
active role in orchestrating these meetings. "We support the freeing of
Palestinian soil, and it is only natural that we would support any team
that operates in this direction," he was quoted as saying.

Wed Oct 4,2000 -- IDF Chief of Staff Lt-Gen Shaul Mofaz stated on
Wednesday that troops reinforcements have been deployed at the Joseph´s
Tomb complex in the PLO Authority (PA) autonomous city of Nablus. The
IDF commander added that if the level of danger to troops became too
high, he is empowered to make the appropriate decisions including troop
withdrawal, with the full support of Prime Minister/Defense Minister
Ehud Barak.

According to the Oslo Agreement signed between Israel and the PA,
although the city of Nablus was turned over to total PA control, the
complex of the Tomb would remain under Israeli sovereignty and the PA
would ensure free access to the location to those wishing to visit.
Since the handover of Nablus, PA military troops as well as local Arab
residents have targeted the site, with PA officials calling to totally
remove the Israeli presence from the city.

Barak tells Albright at Paris talks: no peace talks until violence
ceases

Wed Oct 4,2000 -- Prime Minister/Defense Minister Ehud Barak met on
Wednesday in Paris with US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.
Minister Amnon Lipkin-Shahak, Diplomatic-Security Staff Director Danny
Yatom and attorney Gilad Sher also attended the meeting on the Israeli
side; IDF Deputy Chief of Staff Maj.-Gen. Moshe Ya'alon was present for
part of the meeting. US State Department envoys Dennis Ross and Aaron
Miller and CIA Director George Tenet attended the meeting on the
American side.

Prime Minister Barak said that a cessation of violence is a precondition
to further negotiations and that PLO Authority (PA) Chairman Yassir
Arafat must choose between proceeding towards an agreement or sliding
into a confrontation for which he will bear responsibility for the
consequences. Prime Minister Barak detailed the violations of the
agreements by the PA, including those dealing with illegal weapons and
shooting at soldiers and added that there can be no reward for violence.
Deputy Chief of Staff Ya'alon said that the IDF is using live fire only
it is fired upon in a life-threatening manner.

Assassination assignment lands teacher in trouble

Wed Oct 4,2000 -- The assignment that English teacher Andrew Phillips
scribbled on his chalkboard at Covina High School last week stunned his
students.

Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum, Mr. Phillips
asked students to write a journal entry mapping out an assassination and
explaining how they would get away with it. He gave students who were
offended by the idea an alternative assignment: They could describe
eight to 10 motives for killing a person.

As word of Mr. Phillips' assignment spread, parents began demanding his
removal. On Tuesday, he was replaced by a substitute teacher.

Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Residents
reported feeling the quake for about 30 seconds.

New fall program provides forum for kids to explore occult

Wed Oct 4,2000 -- Angry demons, a resurrected sibling and mysterious
psychopaths are key figures in the premier of "Freakylinks," the Fox
Network's new, controversial fall series geared to teen-agers in which
the hero investigates occult phenomena and urban legends.

Parents and activists are protesting the program -- originally called
"Fearsum" -- which is scheduled to premier on Fox Friday, Oct. 6 at 9
p.m. Protesters say the show encourages teens to explore the occult, not
just by the program's content, but by its accompanying website,
Freakylinks.com, which is already up and running.

The following is a teen-ager's posting on the website Freakylinks.com:

"i think i'm a witch. cause i have this powers of doing stuff if i
really belive in them. i can even predict what people are gonna say, or
make things happen. like move stuff and other things. so i think this is
the best thing that's ever happened to me."

Devastating floods in Bangladesh worsen even more

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: faith
                         Source: Reuters

Wed Oct 4,2000 -- The ongoing devastating floods in Bangladesh have
already killed more than 100 people and affected millions more. The
floods still continued to surge on Wednesday. The situation was
particularly grim in Satkhira district where more than 30 villages were
swamped after a river dyke collapsed two days ago, leaving people
stranded on their rooftops. Most of the deaths in the 10-day-old
continuous floods had been caused by drowning and house collapses, while
others died from disease or snakebites. The floods in the SW are
believed to be the first to hit the region in at least 50 years, leaving
people totally unprepared and caught offguard. People are trapped by the
rising waters as rescuers try to get to them.

Relief workers estimate that more than half a million people were facing
shortages of food, drinking water and medicines. But disaster management
officials said the current floods (in the north)were not as widespread
across the country as the massive inundation that just hit as recent as
1998. That incredible flooding just a couple years back, covered 3/4 of
the country, including the capital Dhaka, killing around 3,000 people.
But for the SW areas of Bangladesh it's a whole other story. As..."The
1998 and earlier floods did not swamp the southwestern districts, so the
current deluge is new to most of the people there," said an official in
Jessore. The torrents, caused by rain and an onrush of water from the
flood-swept Indian state of West Bengal, have damaged or destroyed more
than 100,000 hectares (250,000 acres) crops, over 1,000 km (625 miles)
of roads and 500 schools, according to preliminary estimates.

Saigon River in Vietnam at all-time record highest level

Wed Oct 4,2000 -- Renewed torrential rains in parts of Vietnam's Mekong
Delta have worsened what is already the worst flooding in the country in
four decades. The Saigon River reached its highest recorded level on
Tuesday as emergency crews and residents frantically sandbagged Ho Chi
Minh City in an attempt to hold back its surging waters. Officials fear
that the rains predicted for the next several days will cause the river
to burst its banks. Low- lying areas of the delta have been transformed
into inland seas with waters as high as 16 feet deep. Water levels in
the provinces of Kien Giang and Tien Giang are predicted to continue
rising for still at least another week.

A member of the Kien Giang People's Committee said, "The only road to
transport relief to our province will soon be cut. We will have to use
boats and helicopters." At least 375,000 people in the Mekong Delta have
been evacuated to higher ground and another 60,000 families are awaiting
relocation. Many of the evacuees are taking shelter on unstable dikes,
huddled in crowded and unsanitary conditions. More than 230 people, the
majority of them children, have died in the ongoing torrential floods.

The latest from NASA: robo-snakes!

                         Source: MSNBC

Wed Oct 4,2000 -- The robotic serpent could be ready for space travel in
five years, the space agency said in a statement from its Ames Research
Center in California´s Silicon Valley.

“The snake will provide us with flexibility and robustness in space,”
said Gary Haith, the project´s engineer. “A snakebot could navigate over
rough, steep terrain where a wheeled robotic rover would likely get
stuck or topple.”

So far, engineers have been working with a rudimentary snakebot with a
main computer-brain connected to the parts of its segmented body by a
wire, telling the small motors in each segment what to do. Eventually,
scientists hope to build a model with synthetic “skin” to protect its
working parts, and with a smart enough main computer-brain to enable it
to perform construction tasks in space.

Papua New Guinea volcanic explosion prompts evacuations

Mount Ulawun Volcano during the past weekend. People were evacuated to
shelters as a precautionary measure following heavy ash falls. The
volcano is located on the north coast of the island, and also near Mount
Tavurvur Volcano. Mount Ulawun has shown increased activity for the past
month. The 7,657- foot-high Ulawun is also known as the North Son. And
the Mount Tavurvur volcano it lies near, has spewed clouds of smoke and
ash on an almost daily basis.

Giving robots the sense of touch that humans have

                         Weekend News Today

                         Source: Daily University Science News

Wed Oct 4,2000 -- Allison Okamura wants to give robots the gift of
touch. To do this, Okamura, who has just joined The Johns Hopkins
University's engineering faculty, is setting up the school's first lab
dedicated to the cutting-edge field of robotic haptic exploration.
"'Haptic' means anything related to the sense of touch," Okamura says.
"One part of my work involves robotic fingers. I program them to explore
unknown environments and give them tactile sensing and force sensing. I
try to emulate the human ability to manipulate, touch and explore."

Her work is part of a larger effort to create more sophisticated
machines to take over tasks that are too dangerous, too tedious or too
difficult for humans. To achieve this goal, many researchers are working
on systems that give robots "eyes" to identify objects and avoid
obstacles. But Okamura is one of the few engineers trying to replicate
the sense of touch.

"Vision is obviously very important," she says. "But if you can imagine
going through life only seeing things but never being able to touch
them, it's obvious that touch is also very important. 'Touch' is also
something that's very difficult to get robots to do. Vision is a passive
sense¡you can look at something without affecting it. But in order to
touch something, the robot has to interact with the object and
manipulate it."

France unveils minors' abortion bill

                         Source: CNN

Wed Oct 4,2000 -- Labour minister Martine Aubry has unveiled a new bill
that would allow minors to have an abortion without parental consent and
extend the cutoff date for legally terminating pregnancy from 10 to 12
weeks. The National Assembly is also due to begin debating the
distribution of morning- after-pills in junior and senior high schools.

Aubry, who also oversees the Health Ministry, wants to reduce the number
of women in France who travel abroad to have later-term abortions
performed in other countries. About 5,000 travel to Belgium, the
Netherlands and Britain annually for the procedure. The bill also would
allow girls under 18 to have abortions without parental consent, and
authorise an unrelated adult to act as a tutor to help them with the
abortion.

About 220,000 abortions are performed in France each year but many
French doctors say that an abortion performed after 10 weeks of
pregnancy is more traumatic for both patient and doctor.

Stateless Arabs threaten to take up arms to enter Kuwait

Wed Oct 4,2000 -- Scores of stateless Arabs camped on the Iraq-Kuwait
border demanding entry to the oil-rich emirate threatened to take up
arms Wednesday, but Kuwait dismissed the protest as a propaganda stunt.
"We are determined to stay here until our demands have been met," the
protestors' spokesman, Sheikh Nayef al-Ghanam, told AFP from their sandy
camp just metres (yards) from the border with Kuwait near the Iraqi town
of Safwan.

Sheikh Nayef said they had delivered a letter addressed to UN Secretary
General Kofi Annan to the head of the UN Iraq-Kuwait Observers Mission
(UNIKOM), which controls the border. "Don't force us to throw down the
olive branch and take up arms," said the letter shown to reporters

Some of the worst flooding before monsoon season even peaks

                         Source: Weather.com

Wed Oct 4,2000 -- The most severe flooding to strike Vietnam in decades
is now inundating the nation´s commercial hub of Ho Chi Minh City.
Monsoonal type torrential rains & flooding came too early this year, and
sent the Mekong River over its banks in recent weeks, killing 487 people
in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. Some families in suburbs of Ho
Chi Minh City are having to find shelter on higher ground. Also in the
region, hundreds of acres of rice paddies have been overflowed with
water. Meteorologists warned that these threatening flood waters may not
recede quickly, since the monsoonal peak rains are expected this month.
The rainy season is supposed to just be getting ready to enter its
heaviest period, yet these areas have already had some of their worst
flooding beforehand. This year's premature start will not help the
situation at all. Planting of the main rice crop will likely be delayed,
and evacuees may have to wait as long as a month to return home.

Wed Oct 4,2000 -- News update: Three earthquakes, with the strongest
being a 5.7, hit off the coast of Japan's Amamioshima Island on Monday
afternoon. Officials in the Tokara island chain ordered evacuations
after the seismic activity triggered several landslides. The quakes
struck the region of sparsely populated islands within a space of two
hours, also shaking nearby islands in Kagoshima, located on the southern
tip of Kyushu. Seismologists reported that the largest quake was shallow
and occurred about 6 miles beneath the seabed near Amami-Oshima Island,
about 75 miles south of Akusekijima.

Japan's Meteorological Agency warned that the tremors could churn up
powerful tsunamis. Itsuo Furuya, head of Japan's Earthquake and Tsunami
Observations Division, reported that numerous quakes were continuing to
occur and warned of possible strong tremors as well as tsunamis.
Military helicopters and Coast Guard patrol boats were also sent to the
area to check out the damage, and to prepare for further evacuations.

THE BATTLE FOR TRUTH: CASE STUDY ONE

As is often the case in the Middle East, the first casualty in the recent
wave of Arab-Israeli clashes was truth, which was baldly proven by the
flagship print daily in the US this past week.

Even the notoriously anti-Israel NEW YORK TIMES outdid itself in a photo
and caption run September 30 on page A5. The picture showed a
fully-oufitted Israeli soldier angrily waving a baton, while below him sits an
anguished young man with streams of blood pouring from his head and down
the
sides of his face. Beneath the photograph, accredited to AP, appeared the
caption: "An Israeli policeman and a Palestinian on the Temple Mount." In the
background is a metal sign in Hebrew advertising liters of diesel fuel.

Later, the NY TIMES received a letter from a Dr. Aaron Grossman of Chicago
which stated that the "Palestinian is actually my son, Tuvia Grossman, a
Jewish student from Chicago. He, and two of his friends, were pulled from
their taxicab while travelling in Jerusalem, by a mob of Palestinian Arabs
and were severely beaten and stabbed."

The letter further explained, "That picture could not have been taken on
the Temple Mount because there are no gas stations on the Temple Mount
and
certainly none with Hebrew lettering, like the one clearly seen behind the
Israeli soldier attempting to protect my son from the mob."

In another letter to the editor, Howard Gissinger of Brooklyn informed the
paper "the picture of the 'wounded Palestinian' is, in fact, my nephew,
Tuvia Grossman, an AMERICAN Jewish student learning in Israel. His only
crime was being Jewish. He was... merely the target of Palestinian[s] who
stoned his cab, dragged him from the vehicle, smashed his head with stones
and stabbed him in the leg. The Israeli soldier, whom you obviously wished
to portray as victimizing the poor, wounded Palestinian was actually saving
my
nephew's life. A casual look at the background of the picture can tell anyone
that it's not the Temple Mount at all."

THE BATTLE FOR TRUTH: CASE STUDY TWO

Although both French President Jacques Chirac and US Secretary of State
Madeleine Albright have joined the Arab world in blaming Likud chairman
Ariel Sharon for the last seven days of violence, a media monitoring group
has documented weeks of anti-Israel incitement in the official Palestinian
media, showing they were begging for an excuse to strike.

Israeli security has pointed to the Palestinian Authority's radio
broadcasts as the source of vicious incitement to violence against Israelis
this
summer. CNS NEWS reports that according to the Palestinian Media
Watch, an
independent media-monitoring organization, PA television and newspapers
have
also joined in the hate campaign.

The PMW says PA television has been making daily calls for Arabs to follow
the "martyrs" in the struggle for "Palestine." One particularly noxious
song - known by IDF intelligence as a "password" to stir crowds to riot -
was being played repeatedly on PA television long before Sharon's visit.

PMW said that most Palestinian newspapers - which are controlled and/or
heavily censored by the PA - contributed to the rising level of incitement
through slanted photographs and captions. They and other monitoring groups
also have tracked a steady stream of viciously anti-Semitic political
cartoons in the Palestinian press.

After the riots began last week, Suha Arafat, the wife of PA chairman
Yasser Arafat, was televised visiting wounded children in hospital. She
told them, "Bless God because you are alive. The Israeli soldier aimed at
your head to kill you."

PA Minister Imad Falouji admitted on PA Television that, "This is a war,
and it won't stop until we remove Israeli soldiers from our land."

PA television edited clips of the funeral of the 12-year-old child
accidentally killed in a crossfire in Gaza this week, asking questions such
as:
"Did this child threaten Israeli national security enough to be killed?" and
"Why did this child have to be killed? We will fight until the last drop of
blood."

IDF Major General Yom Tov Samia said on Sunday that the fighting could be
stopped when "one to three very senior people in the Palestinian Authority
will decide it has to stop... They have got to go out to their people
through the mass media and behind the scenes - and tell them 'stop,'" Samia
said.

The London Times reported: =93Saddam Hussein is importing vast
quantities of Scotch whisky and cigarettes every week while
illegally exporting food and medicine destined for the Iraqi
people, according to a confidential Foreign Office report. The

sanctions regime imposed on Iraq. As the soaring price of oil
shores up his power, Britain and the United States have found
themselves increasingly isolated among the countries of the

week for the dictator's extended political and military elite. At the
same time, humanitarian goods that have been bought for the

ISRAELI-ARAB VIOLENCE HITS ISRAELI PUBLIC LIKE THUNDER

Gershon Adani, a 35-year-old father of two, from the Galilee town of Oshrah
near Acre, described what happened to him yesterday: "I was on my way
home, when suddenly I was stopped by a mob of Israeli-Arabs. They were
stopping all the drivers, and asking to see their papers. They let the Arab
drivers go, but not the Jewish ones. I started to tell them that I was their
neighbor, and have lived here among them for years, etc., but they began
pelting me with bricks, rocks, and anything else... I ran into the car, locked
the door shut, and somehow was able to get through the roadblock. I was
hurt very badly. I got to a police checkpoint, but they couldn't help me
because the ambulance was not able to get through the Arab roadblock."

Adani said, "I was among those who believed in co-existence and the like.
But now, I don't know, something has really changed in my thinking... I don't
know if we can go back to what it was like before... I am not optimistic
about the future."

Erez Kreisler, head of the Misgav Regional Council in the Galilee, responded
to the above: "In the past few days, there have been 170 incidents here: 30
attacks on Jewish towns, 10 firebombs and shooting, 20 roadblocks, 40
cases of rocks and bricks, and 70 cases of arson. This is a real war
situation - our children didn't go to school, and we were stuck inside our
towns. Only after it was understood that there was an existential danger to
the towns did we get help from police and army. [Regarding the future of
Jewish-Arab relations:] We worked hard for years to plant the seeds of
cooperation and harmonic co-existence, and what we have harvested is
hatred. I believed that we could live together... I knew that there would be
disputes, but I never dreamt that it would reach such an existentially-
dangerous extent as actual attempts to burn our towns down to the ground."

Journalist Amnon Lord of Makor Rishon, a former Peace Now member,
discussed his reaction, and that of his left-wing friends, to the present Israeli-
Arab violence: "What is clear is that something very serious is happening,
true seismic shockwaves... It has even surprised me to a certain extent,
because though I have changed some of my opinions [over the years], I never
thought I would come to this conclusion: Israel's Arabs are our number-one
enemy. Some of my friends on the left have also come to this conclusion,
but they are surprised, and say that it is a bitter truth."

MA'ARIV ACCUSES

Israel's daily paper Ma'ariv, not known for its right-wing views, editorialized
today: "Over the years, leaders of the Arab public explained that the
continuing discrimination against Israeli Arabs is what led to feelings of
bitterness and frustration. There was much justice in such remarks. But it
is now clear that the traditional claim of discrimination is only a cover for the
true motive. Those who are outraged over discrimination demonstrate, but do
not shout 'Death to the Jews'. Those who shout 'Slaughter the Jews' do not
want a working sewage system, but rather a Palestinian state on the ruins of
Israel."

IF HE'S BEATEN, HE MUST BE PALESTINIAN

This past Saturday, The New York Times and many other papers published a
picture - supplied by the Associated Press - of an angry Israeli policeman
and a badly-beaten and bloodied man, with the caption, "An Israeli
policeman and a Palestinian on the Temple Mount." The picture can be
seen at <http://www.IsraelNationalNews.com>. Dr. Aaron Grossman, of
Chicago, Ill., sent the following letter to the Times: "Regarding your picture
on page A5 (Sept. 30) of the Israeli soldier and the Palestinian on the Temple
Mount - that Palestinian is actually my son, Tuvia Grossman, a Jewish
student from Chicago. He, and two of his friends, were pulled from their
taxicab while traveling in Jerusalem, by a mob of Palestinian Arabs and were
severely beaten and stabbed. That picture could not have been taken on the
Temple Mount because there are no gas stations on the Temple Mount and
certainly none with Hebrew lettering, like the one clearly seen behind the
Israeli soldier attempting to protect my son from the mob."

Tuvia Grossman was on his way to the Western Wall on Friday afternoon,
and has been hospitalized ever since with head injuries and a stab wound.
He told Arutz-7 today, "I was in a taxi on the way to the Kotel [Western
Wall] and we got stoned... [They took me out of the car and beat me and] I
gave a scream, and for a second they let go of me, and I said Shma Yisrael,
because I thought it was all over... After they let go of me, I ran - even
though I had a knife in my leg, G-d gave me the strength to run and I was
able to make it up the hill where there were soldiers by the gas station and
they took care of me. But I was being beaten for around 5 or 6 minutes with
a rock on the top of my head, and I was stabbed in the back of my leg and
kicked and punched all over my body."

"[When I saw the mis-captioned AP picture] I was extremely, extremely
upset. People see a picture of a youth and they think that it's a Palestinian
being beaten by Israelis, it changes their world view and makes them think
that it's the Israelis beating up the Arabs. I was extremely upset. It was
totally the opposite. That policeman was yelling at the Arabs to back off,
and was protecting me from them - so to change it around and to say that he
was beating me, that's just total distortion, and the world must be notified
about how this is not true - the Jews are the ones suffering at the hands of
the Arabs."

The Times published a correction today, in which it identified Tuvia
Grossman as "an American student in Israel" - not as a Jew who was beaten
by Arabs. The "correction" also noted that "Mr. Grossman was wounded" in
"Jerusalem's Old City" - although in fact it occurred in an Arab-populated
neighborhood of Jerusalem, not in the Old City. An Associated Press
spokesman told Arutz-7 that it was looking into the matter.

VIOLENCE SPREADS WORLDWIDE

The violence has opened a "branch office" in New York, and possibly several
other places as well. In the Jewish neighborhood of Boro Park, Brooklyn,
several Jews have been beaten over the past day by "Arab-looking"
attackers, one Jew was injured when he was thrown from a train platform to
the ground two floors below, and a bus of one of the local yeshivot was burnt.

The police in Paris have sent reinforcements to all neighborhoods in which
Jews reside, for fear of attacks... On Monday night in Dusseldorf, Germany,
a synagogue was firebombed... In Damascus, hundreds of demonstrators
gathered outside the U.S. Embassy today, threw rocks, broke windows, and
burnt Israeli flags... The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee is
organizing protests against the "killing of Palestinians in Israel" in New York,
San Francisco, Washington, and other cities.

WHICH VOICE TO SOUND?

Gabi Boutboul, a ranking member of the Israel Broadcasting Authority, said
that at his demand, the IBA governing board will convene tomorrow to
discuss what he called the "over-abundance of PLO propagandists on Israel
Radio of late." He explained to Arutz-7 today, "Yesterday, I received many
telephones asking me why Israel Radio seems to have turned into a PLO
station... I turned on the morning magazine today, and who do I hear but the
commander of the Tanzim, explaining why it's OK to kill our soldiers. We
have heard [Israeli-Arab MK and Arafat-advisor] Ahmed Tibi a
disproportionate amount of times since Friday, as well as [Israeli-Arab MK]
Dahamshe - the man who has attacked all that is sacred to Israel and
Judaism, and was even sentenced to prison for ten years for terrorist
activity!"

Boutboul said that if the editors tell him that it is important to 'hear the other
side,' "I say: Not during war! What we have to hear is the side of our
country and that of most of the population. Instead, we give an open
microphone to the other side to tell us why they should shoot our soldiers. I
plan to submit a drastic proposal, that during wartime and rebellion we do not
allow PLO spokesman on air. In addition, those producers who did this
should be rebuked and even suspended for a month. The meeting will take
place tomorrow, and the heads of the television, radio, and the IBA have
been invited. I demand answers!"

SHARON CLEARED IN CHICAGO

Yet another voice "clearing" Ariel Sharon of responsibility for the Rosh
HaShanah Arab Assault appeared in a Chicago Sun-Times editorial
yesterday. Excerpts: "The rioting in Israel is Ariel Sharon's fault, right?
Wrong. From the start of the rioting, complaints have been heard about the
visit by Israeli opposition leader Sharon to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem
last week. But however provocative that was, it should be remembered that
the visit was a nonviolent act. Sharon threw no stones, ignited no Molotov
cocktails, fired no shots. Those came from the Palestinians. The
responsibility for the killings--including the heart-wrenching death of that 12-
year-old boy recorded by a TV camera--and injuries in this terrible violence
falls on Yasser Arafat and the Palestinians.

"In visiting the Temple Mount, Sharon was making a statement about the
importance of the holy site to Jews and about the opposition by him and
many Israelis to Prime Minister Ehud Barak's willingness to relinquish some
sovereignty over Jerusalem to the Palestinians. Political statements inspire
passions, but that is not a reason to avoid them. In America's long history,
anti-war protesters, civil rights advocates and labor activists launched
demonstrations knowing they would provoke a violent response..."

NASA Science News for October 04, 2000

NASA-funded scientists are experimenting with
miniature magnetospheres as an innovative means
of space transportation. If the group succeeds,
next-generation spacecraft may come equipped with
fuel-efficient magnetic bubbles that speed their
occupants from planet to planet and ward off the
worst solar flares.
