Hi,
Regarding the doctrine of Mary.

There are some historical points we need to be aware of which many
Christians are not. These supply some background to understanding the
Catholic Doctrine.

1. The Church was born in the context of Greek philosophy. This held that
God (being perfect) could not in any way come into contact with earth/matter
(being corrupt). Thus the idea of God becoming man was "foolishness to the
Greeks". It was complettely offensive to Greek thought. The heresies of the
early church all centre around this question and the heresies took one of
two directions, Either:
(a) Adoptionism - Christ was only a man but was adopted by God, or,
(b) Chirst was God but didn't really become a man - he was some sort of
superhuman spook.

2. This conflict was resolved at Nicea and confirmed at Constantinopal with
the classsic statement of the Nicene creed affirming the divine and human
natures of Christ in one person.
The doctrine behind Nicea - still held to by the Greek church - was that
Christ not only became man but in the incarnation he took on fallen human
nature from Mary because of the necessity of salvation - it was fallen
humanity that needed redemption not some brand of unfallen humanity and so
the mediator had to partake of the two parties requiring mediation - God and
Fallen man.

3. Augustine (who was a Platonist) could not handle this as Platonism
demanded that God be separate from anytihng unclean. It weas bad enough that
God become man but impossible to Augustine that he become fallen man. So
since Augustine the Western church has held that Christ did not take on the
nature of fallen man in the incarnation but took on unfallen humanity. The
Eastern church has always argued that this is inadequate - as that means
that unfallen man are not part of the equation in the mediation Christ
carries out so unfallen man is not thereby redeemed. The WEstern church
tries to counter this by arguing that Christ took our fallen nature on
himself on the Cross - but it has never satisfactorily explained how this
could occur.

4. The Jewish idea of spirituality was that a person derived their spiritual
nature from their mother (not their father). Thus if Mary was a fallen human
being it would follow that Christ, being born of Mary, would inherit fallen
human spirituality. The Catholic Church recognised this problem and so
declared Mary to be sinless, unfallen. One cannot understand the dpoctrine
without this theological background. This, of course, only pushes the
problem one step further back, namely, "If Mary was unfallen then logically
her mother must have been unfallen, otherwise she would have passed on
fallen spirituality to Mary, and so on..." Thus we would end up with a race
of people, the ancestors of Christ, who were unfallen. But if they were
unfallen then they did not need redemption, and if there was a brand of
humanity that did not need redemption then Christ need not have died, and
they must have not been descended from Adam. Other problems arise.

5. Protestants generally dont really understand the reason why the Catholic
church promulgated the doctrine of the sinlessness of Mary. Those that do,
because they are thinking in doctrinal terms governed by the thought of
Augustine, have no answer to the real problem: "If Mary was fallen then she
must have passed on that fallen nature on to Christ in the incarnation."

6. The Only satisfactory resolution is the position of the Fathers at Nicea
who recognised that the Nicene Creed was in every point a contradiction of
the basic premeses of Greek philosophy, particularly the idea that God could
not possibly come into contact with a sinful earth or with sinful man.

7. The Glory of the gospel is that
Romans 8:3 - "God sent his Son in the likeness of sinful flesh" - the word
likeness here is not to be understood in the English sense of "like but
different" but in the Greek sense "like - as in exactly the same".
2 Corinthians 5:21 "He (God) made him (Christ) who knew no sin to be sin for
us that we might be the righteousness of God.

8. But if Christ had a sinful nature how could he redeem us? The Fathers
argued that if he didn't he couldn't. But the presence of a sinful nature
does not mean that Jesus ever sinned. And because he never committed any
personal sin he was not liable to judgement, so was not liable to death so
could die for us.

Really it all makes sense if we throw out our Insidious Greek philosophy -
as the church did at Nicea.

Blessings on you all in the name of our wonderful Lord and Saviour,

John in NZ

"The Intifada of Al-Aqsa" - Roots and Goals

By Yigal Carmon and Yotam Feldner*

The Camp David Summit ended with a Palestinian rejection of the American
proposal for shared sovereignty over Jerusalem in general and over the
Temple Mount in particular. Following this rejection, President Clinton
placed full responsibility for the failure on PLO Chairman Yasser
Arafat. This resulted in a major change in the political stature of
both Israel and the PLO in the eyes of the international community.
While Barak was praised for his courageous peace initiatives, Arafat
faced difficulties even in states that traditionally supported the
Palestinian cause. Now, in France, South Africa, China, and Russia and
throughout the world, leaders will not support a Palestinian unilateral
declaration of an independent state.

Because of the shift in the international position towards Israel, the
PLO realized that it had reached the limit of its possible achievements
in the current political process. Worse, even the unilateral
declaration of an independent Palestinian state (UDI) - Arafat's
immediate and long awaited goal - had lost international support.
Arafat found himself at a dead end.

The PLO's Dual Strategy

The PLO had prepared for this stage. From the outset of the Oslo
process, PLO spokesmen stated that the PLO would take a political course
as long as it continued to bear fruit. But when a dead end was reached,
the PLO would turn to the military option in order to continue to
advance its basic goals: an Israeli withdrawal to the 1967 line, the
establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, and
the implementation of the Palestinians' right of return.

As early as January 1996, PA Minister of Planning and International
Cooperation Nabil Sha'ath stated in a symposium in Nablus: "We decided
to liberate our homeland step by step… this is the strategy… we say:
'should Israel continue no problem. And so we honor the peace treaties
and non-violence, so long as the agreements are fulfilled step-by-step.
[But] if and when Israel says 'enough,' namely, 'we will not discuss
Jerusalem, we will not return refugees, we will not dismantle
settlements, we will not withdraw to the borders,' in that case it is
saying that we will return to violence. But this time it will be with
30,000 armed Palestinian soldiers and in a land with elements of
freedom. I am the first to call for it. If we reach a dead end we will
go back to our war and struggle like we did forty years ago."

In most of his public speeches and interviews, Arafat stated that "all
options are open," a slogan that became a permanent motif in the
declarations of PLO spokesmen throughout the years. "No one believed
him when he used to say it, " said Nabil Sha'ath, "but in fact
throughout the period in which we conducted negotiations, three
Intifadas took place. This one is indeed the most important… [but] the
Palestinian people did not cease throughout the seven years of
negotiations [since Oslo] from carrying out Intifadas against Israel and
stating its positions by means other than the negotiating table."
_________________________________________

(I) A speech in Nablus, January 1996. MEMRI has this speech on
videotape. In September 1996, the PLO employed this strategy when it
used the opening of the Western Wall Tunnel to force Netanyahu to meet
with Arafat and to carry out the Hebron agreement.
________________________________________

"The choice," explained Sha'ath, "is not at all between options of
negotiation and fighting: You can have negotiations and fight at the
same time… the Palestinian people fight with weapons, with jihad, with
Intifadas and suicide actions... and it is destined to always fight and
negotiate at the same time."

But in the aftermath of Camp David, the PLO needed an excuse to begin
violent pressure, in order not to be viewed by international public
opinion as the initiator of violence. The excuse was found when Likud
leader Ariel Sharon visited the Temple Mount. And indeed, the
international community accepted the Palestinian version about the
causes for the outbreak of violence, and world leaders criticized the
"provocative visit" - a position which was also echoed in the UN
Security Council resolution.

Preparations for Violence

However, in public statements before the end of the Camp David summit,
high-ranking PLO officials betrayed their feeling that the time for the
"military option" was nearing. A senior PA security official, told the
Israeli Arab paper Kul Al-Arab, "The Palestinian people are in a state
of emergency in view of the failure [to achieve an agreement] at Camp
David… The next Intifada will be much more severe and violent than the
first - the official forewarned - since the Palestinian people [have]
weapons enabling it to defend themselves in a confrontation with the
Israeli army."

The following week, the same source announced that, "The popular
recruitment in the PA's territories has significantly increased, and a
Palestinian Liberation Army was established under the Fatah leadership.
The PA has already distributed weapons to the citizens and is
supervising training and preparation for the possible confrontation with
the forces of the Israeli occupation."

As early as the beginning of July, the Director-General of the PA
Ministry of Information, Hasan Al-Khashef instructed the Palestinians:
"If all the households are turned into storage houses to secure the
residents' basic needs, this will lift a heavy burden off the
leaderships' shoulders, since it will allow it to focus on the chief and
necessary challenges that it will inevitably face."

The failure of the Camp David Summit heightened the awareness among
Palestinian officials that the violence was getting closer. Hasan
'Asfur stated that "The failure to reach a final agreement will force
the Palestinians to opt for military action" including inside Israel
proper.

(II) Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, (PA) August 16, 2000. The Gaza Chief of
Preventive Security, Muhammad Dakhlan, even warned, "If an agreement is
not reached, and the confrontation with the occupation [forces] ensues,
anyone who thinks that the confrontation with us will be an easy one is
engaged in wishful thinking. Our ability to react is better than it was
during the Beirut days. We have the ability to affect daily life in
Israel… We will achieve a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its
capital, even if it is by blood." Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, August 16, 2000.
_________________________________________

PA Justice Minister Freih Abu Middein went even further, and warned that
"Violence is around the corner, and the Palestinians are willing to
sacrifice even 5,000 casualties."

The Political Goals of the Intifada

The PLO hopes to translate the violence into political achievements.
Its primary, constant and ultimate goal is Israel's withdrawal to the
June 4, 1967 borderline and the realization of the right of return for
Palestinian refugees. But it also has the intermediate goal of
declaring an independent state. To support these objectives the PLO is
pursuing an interim goal: internationalization of the Palestinian
problem through the deployment of international forces to "protect the
Palestinians." This would deprive Israel of its sovereignty and may
improve Palestinian opportunities for a UDI. The PLO's demand for an
international committee to investigate the reasons for the outbreak of
violence is the first step in this direction.

"I believe that today we are no longer talking about going back to
negotiations," Nabil Sha'ath states. "Now we are talking about the need
for an Israeli withdrawal and about the need to end the occupation. If
there are going to be negotiations, they must be determined by
international legitimacy, namely withdrawal to the June 4, 1967
borderline and the return of the refugees."

The PLO hopes to reach this immediate goal by conducting negotiations at
the same time that it orchestrates and escalates the violence.
Consequently, Palestinian leaders are increasingly making public
statements that the violence is PLO policy and constitutes a part of the
PLO's negotiating strategy. In a symposium in Ramallah, PA Finance
Minister Muhammad Al-Nashashibi said, "The Intifada will continue until
the achievement of our national goals."

PLO representative in Washington, Hassan Abd Al-Rahman clarified the
PLO's policies: "The Intifada is a means of popular struggle in which
all parts of the people take part in order to realize the
internationally recognized legitimate rights of the Palestinian people…
This is the goal of the Intifada… The use of violence, the struggle and
martyrdom… used by people to achieve their rights."

The Struggle for World Public Opinion during the Intifada

Parallel to the battle on the ground, and integral to the PLO's goal of
internationalizing the conflict, is the struggle for the support of
world public opinion. The diplomatic success that Israel's Prime
Minister initially achieved at Camp David assisted Israel in its
struggle to win over international public opinion. But the pictures of
Palestinian casualties neutralized this success.

"The only way to impose our conditions," explained the Director-General
of the PA Ministry of Information, "is inevitably with our blood.
Without it, the world would lose interest in our cause. Consequently,
the continuation of the popular confrontation is of an urgent necessity…
the force of the Intifada is our only power… our national duty is to
continue the confrontation, the Intifada and martyrdom, so that our
martyrs and our injured will not be in vain, and the Intifada of Al-Aqsa
will be the gate to independence and liberty."

Escalating the Violence

The head of the Fatah organization in the West Bank, Marwan
Al-Barghuthi, stated, "The Intifada should be continued and escalated."
Al-Barghuthi even reorganized his Fatah 'Tanzim' armed men in Nablus
into a new militia that in order to create the appearance that Fatah is
not responsible for the continuation of the violence. Additionally, the
PA released 60 Hamas and Islamic Jihad members, who may engage in
terrorist acts that would then not be attributed to the PA. The field
leadership of the Fatah also seeks to continue the use of violence. The
October 9, 2000 Flyer No. 1 of the "United National Leadership of the
Intifada," which was recently re-established, prepared the Palestinian
public for a long-term confrontation: "The blessed Intifada is a
strategic choice for the liberation of our lands from the Zionist
occupation and it is not a temporary thing."

Conclusion

The Palestinian use of violence after the failure of the Camp David
summit gained the PLO a public relations advantage, but no political
achievements. While Israel has been criticized for its use of force,
this has not translated into international support for the PLO's goals.
The PLO is being pressured to halt the violence but has not been
promised any political returns for doing so. Barak, who will have
difficulty meeting Arafat as long as violence continues, nevertheless
stated that he is willing to do so.
Barak also withheld the seemingly inevitable creation of a national
emergency government in order not to be held responsible for the failure
of the peace process. The PLO, on the other hand, which is withholding
its consent for a summit with Clinton and Barak, is again perceived as
the party rejecting peace and insisting on continuing the violence.

The Palestinians are at war with Israel and as such the

                 told Jerusalem Post Radio yesterday.

Abuschanab, a Gaza University professor says the final

he believes the Palestinian street now feels the time has

*** Bronx synagogue vandalized

NEW YORK (AP) - Four suspects, three of them teen-agers, told
police they threw bottles filled with vodka at a Bronx synagogue
because they were upset about violence in the Middle East, a
police source said Wednesday. The four, ages 15, 17, 18 and 21,
were arrested Wednesday. The police source, speaking on
condition of anonymity, said they told investigators they were
looking for a synagogue to vandalize and stopped at the first one
they drove by. Sunday's attack on the Conservative Synagogue
Adath Israel, just hours before Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of
atonement, is being treated as a hate crime, though prosecutors
had not decided on specific charges Wednesday. See

*** Update: Court throws out rebuttal rules

WASHINGTON (AP) - A month before Election Day, a federal
appeals court threw out long-standing rules that require
broadcasters to give candidates a chance to respond to personal
attacks and political endorsements. The immediate effect of the
repeal of the rules - which already had been suspended through the
remainder of the 2000 campaign season - is unclear. But
broadcasters, who had long argued that the regulations have a
chilling effect on free speech, celebrated the court's decision. "This
decision represents a historic victory in the 20-year fight to grant
broadcasters the same free-speech rights as print journalists," said
Edward O. Fritts, president of the National Association of
Broadcasters. See

*** Russia, U.S. arms talks scheduled

WASHINGTON (AP) - Top U.S. and Russian arms negotiators will
meet in Moscow next week to discuss nuclear weapons cutbacks
and missile defense systems, a State Department spokesman
said Wednesday. The U.S. delegation will be led by John Holum,
undersecretary of state for arms control and international security.
Yuri Kapralov, head of the Russian arms control directorate, will
lead the Russian delegation. The talks Monday through
Wednesday follow similar meetings in August in Geneva,
Switzerland, the department spokesman said. The two sides have
been trying to build on a commitment by Presidents Clinton and
Vladimir Putin to improve safeguards against the accidental launch
of nuclear missiles. See

*** Turkey looking to annoy U.S.

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) - Turkey is walking a thin line: It wants to
show its anger at a U.S. resolution that would recognize the Turkish
killings of Armenians as genocide, but doesn't want to harm
relations
with its closest ally. The answer may lie in symbolic gestures like
Turkey's announcement Wednesday of plans to pump more oil
from Iraq -
a move likely to annoy Washington, which has been pressing for a
strict enforcement of U.N. sanctions on Iraq. Others fear public
pressure may push Ankara into more concrete measures - such as
closing down an air base U.S. warplanes use to patrol and bomb
Iraq -
and strain relations between the two NATO allies. See

*** Report finds 'British' means white

LONDON (AP) - "Britishness" and "Englishness" are racially coded
terms with a whites-only connotation, an independent commission
said
Wednesday in a report that called for a rethinking of the nation's
self-image. The report stirred up a flurry of controversy and
denunciation: One legislator denounced it as "garbage," and a
leading
newspaper said it twisted history just as Stalin and Hitler did. The
report was commissioned in 1998 by the Runnymede Trust, an
independent organization devoted to promoting racial justice. It was
a follow-up to a 1969 report on racial issues authored by a founder
of the trust. The new report's authors, led by Professor Bhikhu
Parekh, took issue with a view of Britain which regards its history
as unbroken, its people united and its identity synonymous with
England. See

*** Arab unity remains an elusive dream

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - For two weeks, protesters all over the Arab
world
have spilled into streets to vent their outrage over the killing of
more than 70 Palestinians in clashes with Israel. From pro-Western
Gulf countries - never major players in Arab-Israeli wars - to
traditional front-line states Syria and Lebanon, such protests have
not been seen in the Arab world since Iraq's invasion of Kuwait 10
years ago. Still, it remains to be seen whether their leaders will be
able to stand united in formulating a joint strategy when they meet
in two weeks to discuss the bloodshed. See

Run Guesthouses for Love Not Money

LONDON (Reuters) - British guesthouse owners beware. You may
be losing money and your wife may be dying of cancer but you
should enjoy living in a picturesque area and must stay open to
provide a warm bed to weary tourists.

That unusual verdict came from a High Court judge this week after
Bryan and Patricia Batey, both 58, tried to convert their
guesthouse in southern England back to residential use.

A government inspector backed their case but the local council in
Eastbourne insisted that the couple carry on running the business
despite a drop in profits.

The council refused to budge even when it was told that Mrs. Batey
had fallen terminally ill with lung cancer. She died on Tuesday, the
day after the High Court ruling.

The lawyer for the council argued that guesthouse owners enjoyed
other benefits that went with the job.

And since there was high demand for holiday accommodation in
the area, the Batey property had a healthy outlook, Craig Howell
Williams told the court.

Hospitals Store Body Parts Without Consent

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Hospitals in Sydney have stored human
tissue or organs from dead people for research, training and
posthumous diagnosis without the consent of families sparking a
government inquiry into the practice.

The New South Wales (NSW) state government said it had found
evidence that hospitals and universities may have been collecting
body parts and human tissue without permission for decades.

``It is uncertain how much, if any, of the human tissue held is
identifiable,'' said NSW Health Minister Craig Knowles, adding the
practice was almost certainly occurring across Australia.

Knowles told parliament Tuesday a preliminary inquiry into Sydney
hospitals was launched following news earlier this year that the
hearts of more than 11,000 children who died of cardiac disease
had been stored at hospitals around Britain.

The preliminary investigation found two Sydney hospitals had kept
human tissue from non-coronial post-mortems without permission
from relatives.

``Australian hospitals and universities contain many samples of
organs and other human tissue. It now seems apparent that some
of these may have been collected, or at least retained, from dead
people without the knowledge of their families,'' Knowles said.

US Navy ship struck off Yemen

The destroyer USS Cole was rammed by a small boat while in port
at Aden Thursday, setting off an explosion that killed at least four
Americans. US officials described the assault as a suicide
mission.

At least another 30 Americans were injured, according to a
Defense Department spokesman.

The registry of the small boat and the nationality of its occupants
were not immediately known. US officials said the "small rubber
craft" was seen speeding towards the destroyer shortly before the
blast occurred.

The explosion left a six- by 12-meter hole in the destroyer, which
had been refueling at the Port of Aden.

The region has been swept in recent weeks by demonstrations,
some of them with ananti-US tone, sparked by Israeli-Palestinian
clashes in the Middle East. Arabs see the US as siding with Israel.

The explosion was heard all over Aden. Flooding on the destroyer
following the explosion was contained and no fires were reported.

From: bpr-list@philologos.org("Neil ")
Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 09:14:04 -0500

Hi Harry

I wrote this article which should help to point out Scripturally that
Mary was as human as any of us. Yes, she was chosen of the God to give
birth to Messiah, but only instrumental in doing this.

Neil

--

PROOF THAT MARY WAS A SINNER, NEEDED A SAVIOR, HAD MORE THAN FOUR
CHILDREN, AND IS NOT MEDIATRIX. by Neil Rivalland

Proof of her being a sinner

Firstly, all men have sinned, including Mary, and fallen short of the
glory of God [Rom 3:23], and through one man sin entered the world and
death spread to all men [Rom 5:12]. King David writing in Psalms says
that he was brought forth in iniquity and in sin when his mother
conceived him - biblical proof of mankinds sinful nature from the time
of conception. [Psa 51:5]. According to the law of Moses every mother
that conceived, either a male or female, had to after an appointed
time
offer sacrifices to God: one as a burnt offering, and one as a sin
offering [Lev.12]. Mary, after conceiving Jesus made these sacrifices
in
accordance and obedience to the Law God gave to Moses. This is clearly
indicated to us in the Book of Luke chap. 2 ver. 21-24. Mary applies
this very observance as is required of every Jewish woman who
conceives
her first born son. To get the full understanding, read Leviticus 12
first, understand what is being said, then read Luke 2:21-24. It is
clear that the offering Mary offers makes according to the " ... law
of
the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons." [Lk.2:24], "
..
the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: ...
"
[Lev. 12:8]. The sin offering Mary gives should be sufficient evidence
of Mary's carnality.

In need of a Saviour

Other proof of Mary being a sinner is found when Mary declares the
need
of a saviour. One is only in need of a saviour when realizing they are
helpless and hopeless; that God in Christ having paid the penalty for
the sins of mankind, is the One in Whom we are able to find
redemption.
[Col.1:12-14]. Mary also said, "My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my
spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour" [Luke 1:46,47]. Again, Mary
admits her estate as the handmaiden of God and not "Mother of God".
Admiting her estate as a handmaiden because God used her
instrumentally
as a vessel to conceive the Lord Jesus Christ. By Mary's own words,
she
removes any idea of pre-emanance so as not to assume exaltation above
God's calling upon her life. "For he hath regarded the low estate of
his
handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me
blessed" [Luke 1:48].

Had more than four children

The Scriptures catergorically state the family Jesus had, and that
Mary
did conceive after the birth of Jesus. She never remained a virgin,
and
can never be considered "immaculate" as the Roman Catholic Church has
exalteded her to be. "Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his
mother
called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?
And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man
all
these things?" (Mat 13:55,56).

Not Mediatrix

Mary as mediatrix is unfounded in Scripture. Scripture tells us who
makes intercession for the saints before the Father.

There are two mediators in Scripture, who are:

Firstly, the Lord Jesus Christ.

"By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.
And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to
continue by reason of death: But this man, because he continueth ever,
hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save
them
to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to
make intercession for them." [Heb 7:22-25].

Secondly, the Holy Spirit.

"Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not
what
we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh
intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he
that
searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because
he
maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God." [Rom
8:26,27].

The cult of the Virgin Mary appears to be eclipsing even the worship
of
Jesus Christ as the redeemer of humankind within the Catholic church.
I'm amazed but not surprised by this Pope's continued exhaltation of
Christ's human mother as the principle intercessionary for God's grace
in deference to the role of the Holy Spirit. As many have shown, other
than the story of the wedding at Cana in John's gospel, there is NO
biblical basis for this role of Mary.

Hi Tracy

The whole world has not gone nuts. This is the fulfilment of
Scripture. The Catholic Church worship the woman who rides the beast.

Rev 17:3  So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness:
and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of
blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
Rev 17:4  And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and
decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup
in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
Rev 17:5  And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON
THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
Rev 17:6  And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints,
and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I
wondered with great admiration.
Rev 17:7  And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I
will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that
carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.

Subject: [BPR] - Insurers get gene test go-ahead
From: bpr-list@philologos.org("Moza")
Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 12:19:11 -0400

Insurers get gene test go-ahead
Sean Poulter, Daily Mail 12 October 2000

Insurers are to be allowed to use genetic test results to identify
people with hereditary illnesses. Companies will be able to refuse
cover or push up premiums for those who are born with genes that
could lead to fatal conditions.

The controversial decision, to be announced by the Government on
Friday, makes Britain the first country in the world to approve this
form of commercial exploitation of the technology.

The first gene test to be sanctioned relates to Huntington's
Disease, an inherited terminal brain condition. Approval for tests
covering seven other illnesses, including hereditary breast cancer
and Alzheimer's Disease, is already in the pipeline.

Further proposals are being investigated which would allow
employers access to gene test results to help them decide who to
hire. The moves will fuel a fierce ethical battle amid concerns that
vulnerable people will find it difficult to get a mortgage or guarantee
long-term security to their partners and children.

One critic said: 'If insurance companies go down these lines, some
people will inevitably be excluded from cover.'

Only four months ago, the United States Senate voted to

stop insurers and private health companies using genetic
information or requiring genetic tests to discriminate against
applicants. More stringent rules banning employers from access to
such information are also being considered by the US authorities.

In Britain MPs, medical experts and consumer groups fear the
Department of Health's decision will create an underclass who
cannot get insurance or other financial products. There is concern
that some might not take a test - which could mean them missing
out on beneficial medical treatment - because of the danger of
being blacklisted.

The insurance industry has been castigated over its rush to use
genetic testing to discriminate against potential customers. Current
policy is to ask people to divulge the result of a gene test only if
they have already had one for their own purposes. But critics
believe insurers will want to massively extend the scope of tests
and move to make them compulsory.

The industry's determination to cut its risks means that companies
are exploiting a loophole in the law to demand the results of gene
tests. The Association of British Insurers refused to wait for the
Government's decision and already allows members to demand
test results for eight specific conditions. The validity and reliability
of these tests are only now being scrutinised by the Department of
Health's Genetic and Insurance Committee.

The director of the National Consumer Council, Anna Bradley, said:
'We are worried that the use of these tests by insurers could
discourage people from taking a test, particularly one that could be
in their health interests. If insurance companies go down these
lines, some people will inevitably be excluded from cover. There
needs to be some provision for these people, the welfare state will
need to provide for them.'

Labour is divided on the issue. Science Minister Lord Sainsbury
supports the insurers, but cancer specialist and Labour MP Dr Ian
Gibson called for an immediate change in the law to ban access. 'I
am not opposed to people knowing their pre-disposition to an
illness,' he said. 'I do oppose insurance companies and others
taking this into account when they are assessing premiums, the
prospects of getting a mortgage and employment. In the end, this
is all about money. It involves either denying cover to people, or
increasing premiums.'

Liberal Democrat health spokesman Dr Peter Brand said: 'This is
about companies cherry-picking people who are unlikely to make
claims. They should not have access to this information.'

Insurance industry analyst Datamonitor warned of a public
backlash and said that while using tests might appear a quick way
of boosting profits 'insurers could shoot themselves in the foot if
they misjudge public sensitivity to genetic testing'.

Association of British Insurers spokesman Suzanne Moore said
the industry needs to take account of all the risks when selling a
policy. 'We have no intention of ever asking people to take a
genetic test,' she said. 'But where someone already has taken a
test, that information may be relevant and should be disclosed.'

The ABI has promised that if any of its tests are ruled invalid by the
Government, people who have been asked to pay higher premiums
will get refunds. That does not help people who have been refused
cover.

THIEVES' SITE DRAWS FIRE
A Web site devoted to the sale of stolen goods has raised the ire of
British lawmakers, who point out that it is illegal to sell stolen
property back to its owner. TheBurglar.com is accused of violating
the Theft Act by charging people "reward" money for the return of
their possessions. Victims of burglaries can post the details of
their losses on the site, and burglars are then invited to
anonymously contact their victims by e-mail to negotiate the return
of the stolen property. The site collects the agreed-upon cash, and
keeps it until the victim has verified receipt of the goods.
TheBurglar.com then sends the payment to the address or account
of the thief's choice. And despite outrage among law enforcement
officials, TheBurglar.com likely will escape prosecution. A note on
its site reads: " TheBurglar.com Headquarter is placed in
Copenhagen, but due to spite we have moved the office to a secret
location." (ZDNet UK 11 Oct 2000)

Subject: [BPR] - IDF smashes Palestinian targets
From: bpr-list@philologos.org("Moza")
Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 12:30:49 -0400

Thursday, October 12 2000 17:35 13 Tishri 5761

               (17:15) IDF smashes Palestinian
               targets
               Arieh O'Sullivan

Crashing down like an iron fist, Israeli helicopter
gunships blasted Palestinian police targets in the West
Bank and Gaza Strip in retaliation for the lynching
murder of two IDF reservists earlier today.

The air force fired at least four rockets in the West Bank
city of Ramallah, hitting the Palestinian police
headquarters and other targets, the army said. "This
action is a symbolic message to the Palestinian Authority
that the IDF will not quietly accept violent actions," an
               IDF statement said.

The army confirmed that two reservists had lost their
way and entered Palestinian territory where they were
detained by Palestinian police. They were then brought
to the city center where an angry mob killed them in cold
               blood, the army said.

The IDF also called on the Palestinians to cease all
               violence and incitement causing it.

Later, IAF helicopters attacked targets in Gaza City.

The IDF Spokesman issued a statement flatly denying
reports that the helicopters had targeted Palestinian
leader Yasser Arafat's house or headquarters. "It chose
its targets very carefully," the statement said.

It also denied reports that IDF troops had crossed into
               Palestinian-controlled territory.

The army, which has been beefing up its forces for over
a week, deployed tanks around every major Palestinian
city in the West Bank. It has not only enforced a closure
of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, but has isolated the
cities from each other, preventing the Palestinians from
moving in or out of their pockets of control.

In Gaza, which is already fenced off, the Navy imposed
               a blockade.

Subject: Cult Cloning...

Dear Friends:

Many of you may have followed the string of mails we put out about
cloning -- especially the forthcoming likelihood of human cloning --
in
which we debated not only the ethical but also the spiritual
implications of this experiment. We said how information is being
presented to the public on a "drip-drip" basis so that the unthinkable
eventually becomes the acceptable through a carefully worked-out
step-by-step process.

You may also remember how I linked the process of cloning with
the many
experiences reported by people of encounters with alleged aliens and
UFOs. I especially referred to an "ET"-inspired movement known as the
Raelians, which has put itself in the forefront of human cloning by
setting up an organisation called "Clonaid", into which they pour vast
amounts of money for research into cloning and to provide babies for
homosexuals and others unable to conceive normally. I hope to putt
all
this material as a composite article on the web shortly.

(Incidentally, do you think that it is a coincidence that the
Roslin
Institute, which cloned Dolly the sheep, is situated adjacent to one
of
the main world centres of Freemasonry and modern gnosticism -- Rosslyn
Chapel. To read an interesting article about the chapel -- which is
about as Christian as the gates of Hell -- try
http://www.templarlodge.com/templars.html ).

My reason for contacting you today is to share with you a report
in
today's Daily Express (a fairly conservative UK newspaper) about the
latest activity of the Raelians in relation to human cloning. I also
heard about this today on an early morning news programme on BBC Radio
5. I can assure you than many characters around the world -- in spite
of what they may express for public consumption -- will be watching
the
Raelian experiment with great interest. It often happens that
establishment figures are very content to sit back and let apparent
loonies do their dirty work for them. "Useful idiots", as Lenin called
them!

This story is not over yet. In fact, this is just the beginning
of a
morally repugnant descent into the values of Antichrist. As that
rabid
intellectual keeps telling you: "You ain't seen nuttin' yet"!
Here is the Daily Express article:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

CULT IN FIRST BID TO CLONE HUMAN

BY TOBY MOORE IN NEW YORK AND MICHAEL HANLON IN LONDON

A BIZARRE religious cult is to try to produce the world's first human
clone by "re-creating" a dead girl.

An American couple have paid £300,000 to the cult's scientists
following
the death of their 10-month-old daughter. Work will start this month
on
cells the couple preserved after the child died in what is being
described as a medical accident.

Yesterday controversy raged over the ethics of the plan. British
cloning
expert Prof Ian Wilmut, who created Dolly the Sheep, said : "It is
absolutely criminal to try this in a human."

The Rael cult believes cloning is the key to "eternal life" and claims
humans were cloned from aliens. At a press conference in Canada it
announced that up to 50 surrogate mothers had volunteered to carry
cloned human embryos in their wombs.

Dr Brigitte Boisselier, scientific director of the Raelians, which
claims 50,000 members in 85 countries, said: "We've got the funding.
We
anticipate being able to start in October."

The Raelian cult founded by Claude Vorilhon, a 53-year-old French
former
sportswriter, has already set up Clonaid, a Bahamas company to produce
babies for homosexual couples. Its laboratory is reported to be in a
Third World country where human cloning is not illegal.

Rael told the press conference in a Montreal hotel, at which he was
surrounded by some of the surrogate mothers, that the mother of the
child who died would not be amongst them. If the pregnancy failed, he
said, she would not have to endure "losing the same child again."

The Raelians offered no proof that they had any of the medical skills
required to clone, but they last year stated their ambition to make it
happen and, according to impartial scientists, there is no longer any
technical reason why they should not succeed.

The Raelian cult has been at the forefront of the informal race to
produce a cloned child. Boisselier did not identify the American
couple
who have put up the money to produce a clone of their 10-month-old
daughter from her cells. Neither did she identify the team who will
work
on the task.

But the announcement in Montreal, last month, is being treated
seriously
by academics with no interest in the stranger aspects of the Rael
religion.

Lee Silver, a Princeton University biologist and authority of cloning
techniques, said: "Just like the Aum Shinrikyo religious group, which
recruited highly trained chemists to develop nerve gas for their
attack
on a Tokyo subway train, I bet that the Raelians could find the highly
trained people they would need to carry out human cloning.

"I get letters all the time from people who want to be cloned. I have
no
doubt it will happen very soon."

"People with experience in vitro fertilisation would probably be able
to
do it," said Michael West, chief executive of Advanced Cell
Technology,
in Massachusetts. His company has been cloning human embryo cells in
the
hope of developing medical treatments. "The directions are all in the
scientific literature. They're not top secret."

Experts believe that the biggest obstacle to human cloning is not that
it requires particularly complex technical ability, but that it would
take many failed pregnancies to achieve a success. There is also
political unease over the process, which is why human cloning is
banned
in 19 countries, though not the United States.

"It's a numbers game," said George Seidel, a cloning expert at
Colorado
University. "It's very likely that if you did it enough times you
could
make it work."

Scientists generally agree that 20 human egg donors and 50 surrogate
mothers offer the probability of making a human clone.

But leading genetics experts condemned the plan. Prof Ian Wilmut, the
man who created Dolly the Sheep at the Roslin Institute near Edinburgh
condemned the plan. "It sounds to me like a very misguided exercise,"
he
said.

"Clearly everybody feels very sorry for any couple who loses a child
but
you cannot get that child back. People should realise that as a
biological truth.

"Quite apart from that, it is absolutely criminal to try this in a
human."

Dr Vivienne Nathanson, head of ethics at the British Medical
Association
said the cloning bid could cause a public outcry.

"They may succeed and if they do it will be very interesting," she
said.
"But rather than winning a Nobel Prize these people may have to face
almost universal condemnation.

"There's a fairly broad consensus worldwide that this is undesireable.
It's too risky and underpinning the scientific risk there are
tremendous
moral and ethical problems. I'm not convinced that people understand
how
unsafe the science is."

Professor Robert Winston, the test tube baby pioneer, said that
cloning
technology was so new that it would be very unliley to produce a
healthy
baby. "As they are so extremely unlikely to succeed I hardly feel the
need to raise my voice to condemn them," he said.

Cloning involves producing a genetic twin from a single cell, for
example a skin cell. Cattle, mice and pigs have all been cloned since
the birth of Dolly the sheep in Scotland in 1996. Dolly was the first
mammal ever cloned from an adult.

The biggest obstacle to creating a human clone is obtaining a supply
of
eggs. A scientist wishing to clone a person would need dozens of
healthy
human eggs - meaning that several women would have to be paid to have
their ovaries stimulated with hormones - a painful and potentially
dangerous process.

Once harvested, the eggs are then denucleated - their DNA is removed
using a fine syringe. DNA extracted from cells from the individual to
be
cloned is then injected into the egg.

The fusion of DNA and egg is then stimulated using chemicals or an
electric jolt. The growing embryo is cultivated in the lab until it is
big enough to be implanted into the womb.

Cloning in animals is a hit-and-miss affair. Hundreds of sheep eggs
were
injected to produce Dolly, although the cloning success rate has been
improving in the years since. Even if an egg can be made to divide, it
will not always grow into an embryo that can be implanted. And a large
number of cloning pregnancies in sheep, cows and mice end in failure -
either by miscarriage or the death of the newborn shortly after birth.
Cloned animals tend to be larger than normal, and this can lead to
developmental problems.

But there is no evidence that a healthy clone is any different to a
"normal" animal. There were fears that Dolly was ageing faster than
normal - she had been cloned from a six-year-old ewe - but these fears
appear to be unfounded.

A serious menace despite those claims of sex with aliens
______________________________________________

THE Raelians' sinister tentacles stretch across the Atlantic and into
Britain, experts say.

Graham Baldwin, director of Catalyst, a British charity which helps
people damaged by cults, described the Rael movement as "very
dangerous"
and with huge financial assets, including £15million in one Swiss bank
account alone.

"What is so worrying is that the man behind it believes he is not
answerable to any rules or rulers," he added. "It's these people who
end
up doing terrible things to their supporters." The organisation, which
describes itself as "the world's largest UFO related, non-profit
organisation" was founded by a French racing driver and journalist
named
Claude Vorilhon, who says he had an erotic encounter with aliens in
1973.

Now calling himself Rael, he lives in Canada and teaches that life on
Earth was created some 25,000 years ago with DNA imported by aliens.
He
thinks that human cloning is the way to eternal life.

His beliefs, which are big on free sex and spontaneous nudity, have
not
surprisingly drawn about 50,000 members in 85 countries. Most are in
Quebec.

Commentators have noted the high number of attractive people the cult
seems to attract, usually between the ages of 17 and 28.

Rael recently began racing cars again, but has denied that the 25
women
who regularly travel with him to races are a harem. He says they are
his
public relations executives.

His "religion" has 125 priests and 24 bishops, and Rael lives in a
home
near Montreal which houses UFOland, a theme park. The star exhibit is
a
full-size model of the space ship he says he boarded for his erotic
encounter with "the eternals". But however absurd the cult may seem,
its
aim to produce a cloned human and its huge resources lend its
pronouncements some credibility.

The scientific arm of the religion is Clonaid, set up to help
infertile
and homosexual couples have children. Valiant Ventures, also based in
the Bahamas, promises to help parents produce a clone of one of them.
A
third offshoot, Clonapet is offering to recreate dogs and cats and
champion race horses.

It is not Rael or his weird beliefs that interest those most concerned
about the ethics of cloning. They mainly fear the head of his
scientific
operations and a bishop in his church, Dr Brigitte Boisselier. She is
unabashed in her determination to move the process forward.

She said recently: "I'm a scientist and very pragmatic even if I do
believe in little green men." Graham Baldwin said that contacts with
people who had left the religion found them disturbed by their
experience. "The general feeling is that he produces a nervous
dependency, taking away their freedom."

He said Rael was dangerous because his claims about meetings with
aliens
lulled authorities across the world into assuming he was just a joke
figure.

"The idea that they will clone a human is very credible because they
seem to have the ambition and vast amounts of money. The mistake is
that
people have not taken Rael seriously."

*** Scouts policy on gays divisive

NEW YORK (AP) - For 90 years, the Boy Scouts have helped foster
togetherness and civic pride. Over the past few months, in
communities across America, they have become a catalyst for conflict.
In June, the Supreme Court upheld the Scout's ban on gay Scout
leaders. Denouncing that policy as discriminatory, numerous school
boards, city councils, corporations and charities have halted or
reduced support for the Scouts. Yet this fall there is increasing
evidence of a backlash against that backlash. Parents, business
executives and conservative political groups are speaking out against
those who are retaliating against the Scouts. See

*** Judge rules on video game ordinance

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A federal judge has ruled that a city ordinance
banning minors from playing violent and sexually explicit video games
without parental permission can take effect immediately. The law,
passed by the City-County Council in July, was to go into effect
Sept. 1. But representatives of the pay-for-play video game industry
- including manufacturers, distributors and arcade owners - sued on
Aug. 21, seeking a preliminary injunction. In Wednesday's ruling,
U.S. District Judge David Hamilton said, "It would be an odd
conception of the First Amendment...that would allow a state to
prevent a boy from purchasing a magazine containing pictures of
topless women in provocative poses, but give that same boy a
constitutional right to train to become a sniper at the local arcade
without his parents' permission." See

*** Arson at synagogue in France

TOULON, France (AP) - The door of a synagogue was doused with
gasoline and set on fire in southern France, police said Thursday, in
the latest in a series of anti-Jewish attacks across the country. The
flames were quickly contained Wednesday evening and damage to the
synagogue in La Seyne-sur-Mer in the Var region was minimal, police
said. The incident brings to 22 the number of anti-Semitic incidents
since the start of the month. On Tuesday night, a synagogue in
Trappes outside Paris was all but destroyed by fire. The attacks are
believed linked to the crisis in the Middle East. See

*** Germany urges Jews to stay

BERLIN (AP) - German lawmakers on Thursday pleaded with Jews not to
leave the country, condemning recent vandalism against synagogues and
renewing appeals to Germans to confront rightist hate-mongers.
Legislators from across the political spectrum stood up to urge tough
punishment of hate crimes during an unusual parliament session called
to discuss Jewish life in Germany in view of growing far-right
attacks against minorities, including a series of anti-Semitic
incidents. "Be assured that we will not accept it when Jewish
citizens are threatened," Kerstin Griese of the governing Social
Democrats said. "We want Jews to live here. We can't look away; we
have to act." See

*** Update: China plant to make RU-486 for U.S.

BEIJING (AP) - A leading Chinese pharmaceutical company that
has made the abortion pill RU-486 for at least seven years will
manufacture the drug for the U.S. market, officials said Thursday.
The China link adds to the controversy that has suffused RU-486's
hotly contested entry to the United States. Anti-abortion
campaigners who fought for eight years to keep the pill off the U.S.
market have criticized China's widespread use of abortion, some of
them forced, to limit family size. The U.S. Food and Drug
Administration approved the pill two weeks ago for U.S.
consumption, but did not disclose the manufacturer's identity and
location because of safety and security concerns. The Hua Lian
Pharmaceutical Co., based in the eastern city of Shanghai, has
been contracted to make the raw compound in RU-486,
mifepristone, for export to the U.S., company executives and
Shanghai family planning officials said. See

*** Online law enforcement plan started

MIAMI (AP) - Florida has launched an online law enforcement
records system that will allow people to check to see if the goods
they want to buy are stolen or if someone they know is wanted.
The new Florida Department of Law Enforcement site allows people
to enter identification numbers for items ranging from household
appliances to vehicles and license plates to see if they've been
reported stolen. If an item is in the database, people can click on it
and e-mail a tip to police. An arrest can earn a tipper up to a
$1,000 reward. An addition to the Internet site in December will let
the public check if someone they know is reported missing or
wanted by authorities. See

*** Russian TV tries naked newscasts

MOSCOW (AP) - Russia's successful television producers fall into
two categories: the brainy or the zany. The brainy ones court
Russia's large educated class with full-length, commercial-free
operas and such programs as "Apocrypha," a biweekly discourse
on the lives of classical authors. The zany ones aim elsewhere. As
in "Naked Truth," a newscast in all ways normal - except the
anchorwoman sometimes strips while she reports the day's events.
The reporters go topless when covering parliament. And the
weather forecaster strokes her bare breasts as she predicts light
rain. Producers say they had to choose between these two paths,
the highbrow and the out-there, to stay afloat amid the flood of
formulaic imported soap operas and cop serials that clogged
Russia's airwaves in the 1990s. The strategy appears to be
working. See

TODAY'S HEADLINES:

AS WE GO TO PRESS:
Communications Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer confirmed that three Israeli
soldiers, and not two, were killed by Palestinians today: One was killed
before his comrades reached the police station in Ramallah, and the other
two were lynched by the Arab mobs.

1. TWO ISRAELI SOLDIERS LYNCHED IN RAMALLAH; IDF RETALIATES
The IDF reacted to today's brutal lynching of two Israeli soldiers in
Ramallah with five bombing raids on carefully-selected buildings in
Ramallah and Gaza.

Today's events began when two soldiers, on their way back to their army
base in or near Beit El after a short furlough from their reserves duty,
were brutally lynched by a wild mob of Arabs. Palestinian sources falsely
reported that they were undercover agents. The Israelis entered the city
by mistake, and were detained by the Palestinian police. After they were
brought to the police station in central Ramallah, a crowd of between 1,000
and 2,000 Arabs broke into the building, overcame the police, and
murderously beat and killed the Israelis. Some of the Palestinian police
took part in the lynch. The body of one of the Israelis was dragged around
the city chained to a car. Television pictures show Arabs in the window of
the station, alternately beating and stabbing someone inside and gleefully
making a V sign out the window; the video clip can be seen on Arutz-7's
homepage, <www.israelnationalnews.com>.

The soldiers were viciously beaten all over their bodies. Military
officials who handled the bodies told Arutz-7 that they were "deliberately
tortured and abused... The bodies were mutilated and torn to
pieces. There was great difficulty in recognizing them..." The bodies will
not be autopsied unless specific permission is received from the families
of the dead soldiers; as of now, such permission has not been received.

At approximately 5 PM this afternoon, Palestinian Arabs shot at an Israeli
news-crew from Channel Two television; two cameramen were wounded. Arabs
shot at Israeli targets near Adam and in Hevron late this afternoon; no one
was hurt.

2. THE RETALIATION
In Ramallah, the targets of the first IDF bombing attack, at approximately
3:00 PM, were Palestinian television buildings, from where heavy incitement
against Israel is broadcast daily; Arafat's headquarters; and the police
station where the lynch occurred. Two of four Palestinian television
stations ceased broadcasting afterwards, and Palestinian Radio is
broadcasting weakly, if at all. A second attack two hours later targeted
other buildings in Ramallah. Military installations in northern Gaza were
bombed as well, including five Palestinian Authority ships and a floor of
the Palestinian police that housed the Tanzim force.

IDF officials made clear today that today's retaliatory bombings were "a
symbolic signal to the PA that we will no longer show restraint in the face
of continued attacks... This shows that the IDF will from now on initiate
attacks, and not only react." The officials emphasized, however, that the
army is not interested in an escalation. The IDF says that all PA
officials were warned three hours in advance that their buildings were in
danger. The army is prepared for a possible escalation on the part of the
Palestinians. IDF tanks are now surrounding all PA towns. Arafat's
headquarters and home in Gaza were not bombed, contrary to some reports.

Gaza security chief Muhammad Dahlan told Gazan Arab residents that IDF
troops and tanks had filled Gaza streets. The IDF spokesman dismissed
these reports, and said that the PA is now waging a propaganda war. PA
officials said that the IDF bombings today are a "declaration of war on the
PA."

The residents of Psagot, bordering immediately adjacent to the Ramallah
suburb of Al Bireh, were instructed to enter their bomb shelters. The
cellular phone system in the PA areas is on the verge of collapse, and
Palestinians have been called upon by their leaders not to use their
cellular phones.

On July 12 of this year, Arutz-7 reported the following:
PREPARING FOR WAR IN THE P.A.
Arutz-7 correspondent Haggai Huberman reports that the PA has begun
hoarding food and other necessary supplies. The reason: anticipation of a
Palestinian-initiated military clash with the IDF following the declaration
of a Palestinian state on Sept. 13. The manager of a flour mill in
PA-controlled Gaza reports a present supply of 8,000 tons of flour, and
five large aluminum storage containers - each of which can contain enough
flour to supply the entire population of Gaza for two months - have been
ordered. PA hospitals have also been hoarding emergency medicine
supplies. It has been learned, as well, that PA leaders are supplementing
their electrical system with private generators in the event that Israel
cuts off electricity to the PA. Gaza security chief Muhammad Dahlan, for
instance, has purchased a generator both for his own private home and for
his command headquarters. The Israeli security establishment is perturbed
with the increased pace of PA training exercises, which include suburban
warfare exercises and drills preparing forces to conquer Yesha
settlements. There has also been a noticeable intensification of
reinforcement of Palestinian paramilitary posts throughout Yesha, and
tunnels in Gaza are also being dug at an unprecedented pace.

3. REACTIONS
Communications and Housing Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer said after the
lynching: "There is no peace process, period. It is dead, it is behind us.
Arafat wants war, that's all."

Interior Minister Chaim Ramon, a leader of the peace camp, said, "In the
end, there will be peace, because there has to be. But meanwhile, Arafat
has made a very big mistake, which will cost his people a terrible
price. On the very verge of peace, he has chosen to go the way of
war... In his schizophrenic personality, his desire to attain diplomatic
gains was apparently overcome by his violent, terrorist nature..."

MK Yossi Sarid (Meretz), after the bombings: "Barak reached the limit of
his restraint, I think this retaliatory action was unavoidable. After the
lynch of today, and all the events of the past days, I estimate that there
was no other choice, as the situation was deteriorating and if there was no
reaction on our part, it would have continued to deteriorate."

The bombings were preceded by militant remarks by two government ministers
- Binyamin Ben-Eliezer and Dalia Itzik. The latter called for military
offensives that will hurt the other side. Rabbi Yitzchak Levy, National
Religious Party, said after the lynch, "The Palestinian Authority has
officially turned into a body that cooperates with bloodthirsty Arab
mobs. This is a war for all intents and purposes, and we must relate to
the PA representatives in this way."

MK Rehavam (Gandi) Ze'evi (National Union-Yisrael Beiteinu) said this
morning after the lynch: "Tanzim head Marwan Bargouti must be considered a
wanted criminal and must be arrested. Electricity should be closed off to
Ramallah, and no traffic should be allowed in or out; Arafat's air traffic
must be stopped, Barak must resign, and Beilin must be fired and leave
public life."

4. PALESTINIAN SHOOTING ATTACKS INCREASED LAST NIGHT
Close to 30 Palestinian shooting incidents took place last night and today.
Palestinian police opened fire this morning on IDF soldiers in the Gush
Katif junction; no one was hurt. Earlier, a firebomb was thrown at a Jewish
school in Jaffa; a classroom was burnt. Not far from there, a Jewish boy
was stabbed yesterday. Last night, there was heavy firing in Psagot - where
bullets penetrated one house - and in Hevron, where three soldiers were
wounded. The Jews of Hevron, for the umpteenth time, demanded that the army
take over the hills of Abu Sneinah overlooking the Jewish homes and where
much of the shooting originates - as was promised for such circumstances at
the time of the signing of the Hevron withdrawal agreement by the Netanyahu
government in early '97.

Other shootings took place outside N'vei Tzuf, wounding one Jew, and three
soldiers were lightly wounded in shooting incidents in Gush Katif and
Halhoul; Palestinians fired shots outside Rechelim, Luban a-Sharkiyeh
(north of Ramallah), Tulkarm, Rafiah, and elsewhere.

5. MORE MINOR JEWISH RESPONSES
After news of the lynch was spread, a mosque south of Shechem - not far
from where the funeral procession of Rabbi Hillel Lieberman was shot at and
stoned yesterday by Arabs - was set ablaze today. Beforehand, the
Shechem-Jenin road was closed to traffic this morning by Shavei Shomron
residents. Spokesperson Tzippy Dagan explained that for as long as Israeli
drivers suffer from Palestinian attacks on the roads, neither will
Palestinian drivers be able to travel safely.

Rabbi Zalman Melamed and Rabbi Shlomo Aviner, the rabbis of Beit El, issued
a call to all Yesha residents and especially the youth, not to initiate any
activities against the Arab population, as "we are very close to the hour
when everyone will agree that we were right when we warned against these
accursed Oslo accords."

The government announced that Prime Minister Ehud Barak commended last
night the restraint shown by the Jewish residents of Yesha in the face of
recent attacks, including the murder of Elon Moreh resident Hillel
Lieberman and the numerous incidents of shooting and stone-throwing at
their communities and along the roads. Prime Minister Barak said that,
"The Jewish settlements are showing self-control and stamina in the midst
of one of the most difficult waves of attacks in the region, and I want to
commend them. This behavior must continue..."

The Jewish communities of Judea and Samaria, as well as the army, are on
the alert for possible Palestinian retaliatory terrorist attacks against
the residents.

6. OTHER DEVELOPMENTS
Prime Minister Barak was in the midst of meeting with Yesha Council leaders
- for the first time in two months - when news of the Ramallah lynch was
learned. The meeting was re-scheduled for a later date, in a Yesha
town. Barak had called opposition leader Ariel Sharon this morning, and
discussed the recent developments and the possibility of a national-unity
government. The two are scheduled to meet again later. Environment
Minister Dalia Itzik called firmly upon Prime Minister Barak to form a
national-unity government: "It is not realistic of the opposition to
demand that we totally abandon the diplomatic process - what, if the
Palestinians call us tomorrow and say they want to talk, we won't talk with
them? - but on the other hand we also have to take some real steps, and not
just make half-hearted calls over the radio for a unity government."

Among the Hamas prisoners recently freed by the Palestinian Authority was
apparently master terrorist Muhammad Def, who was arrested a few months
ago. Def is the successor to terrorist Yichye Ayash ("The Engineer"); in
the mid-1990's, Def orchestrated the attacks that killed dozens of Jews and
injured another hundred. Amongst the deaths for which he is responsible
are those resulting from the two #18 bus suicide bombings in Jerusalem in
the spring of 1996, in which a total of 43 people were killed. Prior to
turning to suicide bombings, Def directed the kidnappings and murders of
IDF soldiers Shachar Simani, Aryeh Frankental, and Nachshon Wachsman.

7. REACTION BY MK BENNY ELON
MK Benny Elon (National Union-Yisrael Beiteinu) visited, with his party
colleagues, the Gush Katif town of Netzarim today. After expressing lavish
praise for the courage, determination, and forbearance of the residents
there - who have just emerged from a two-week siege - he recommended that
"the Palestinian airport should be closed totally, including to
Arafat. All Palestinian VIP passes for free travel should be
cancelled... Arafat is planning to declare a state very soon, and he
thought that he would get international support after the 12-year old boy
was shot... We must remain united and wise, and thank G-d that the truth
of the Palestinian intentions has emerged... Unfortunately, I feel that
the situation will get worse, and we will soon see the true nature of the
peace with Egypt and Jordan - but we don't have to do anything to hurry
that up. Our main war for which we must remain united is against the PA
leadership, which we must present as small-time, immoral, and disgusting
murderers..."

8. REACTIONS BY YESHA LEADERS
Rabbi Eliezer Melamed, the rabbi of the Shomron town of Brachah, said:
"There is no choice. The solution proposed by [some on the left] to give
away the settlements in Yesha is not an option. If we withdraw, it must be
all the way to the sea. What, do they think that if we retreat to a narrow
strip along the coast, they won't want to attack us? Our only option is to
defeat them." He said that he met with army leaders this week, and told
them that many of his townspeople have begun to despair of the army's
ability to protect them. "The soldiers plead with us to do speak to the
politicians with whom we have connections, because they see Arabs coming to
bombard Jewish cars with rocks, and the government does not allow them to
shoot!" When asked if he is then in favor of an all-out offensive, he
said, "Yes, 100%! It should begin with killing... the top commanders who
drive the mobs. Yes, I am wary of the world's reaction, but it will be
against us in any event, so it might as well come when we are strong."

I am in favor of an all-out attack. It should begin with killing Arafat,
and then the top Palestinian commanders that drive the mobs. Yes, I am
wary of the world's reaction, but it will be against us in any event, so it
might as well come when we are strong."

Elon Moreh resident Benny Katzover spoke to Voice of Israel radio after the
murder of the two soldiers today and the resulting Israeli bombing of PA
buildings in Ramallah: "I was part of the funeral for Hillel Lieberman,
who was murdered this past weekend. He was murdered after the IDF pulled
out of Joseph's Tomb; this move - the abandonment of Jewish holy sites -
was translated by the Palestinians as a weakness, and led to the lynch of
Lieberman. When Israel decided not to act harshly against Shechem
residents, who carried out that lynch, we were offered a second lynch,
today in Ramallah. Why does the Israeli military respond only after it
costs us in Jewish lives?"

More than one million Iraqis ready for holy war against Israel:
official

BAGHDAD, Oct 12 (AFP) - More than one million people have
volunteered in Iraq to join the jihad (holy war) against Israel
alongside the Palestinians, an Iraqi official said Thursday.

"The number of people who have volunteered for the jihad in
Palestine has surpassed one million," an official in Iraq's ruling
Baath party said.

"The volunteers, both men and women, are coming more and more
to recruitment centers," he said.

Meanwhile, the director of Iraqi's Baath office, Adnan Daud
Sulaiman, said nearly 700,000 people had volunteered in the two
days after President Saddam Hussein issued a mobilization call.

The Iraqi cabinet, with Hussein presiding, announced Sunday it
was mobilizing volunteers for a "jihad in Palestine" and was
devoting five million euros (4.4 million dollars) to the Palestinian
uprising.

Millions of Iraqis have undergone military training in the past several
years in training camps opened in Baghdad and the provinces.

Iraq is militantly opposed to the US-brokered Middle East peace
process.

(20:05) Report: Iraq moving forces
               West

There are unconfirmed reports from the US State
Department that Iraq has begun to move military forces
to the west. CNN says that the Hammurabi Brigade,
under the control of the Republican Guard, was moved.

During the Gulf war crisis in 1991, Israel made it clear to
the Iraqi government that any troop movement westward
toward Jordan and Israel would be considered
tantamount to an act of war.

MK Elon calls for destroying Oasis casino in Jericho

(IsraelWire-10/12-10:33-IST) Following the Thursday night arson
attack in which the ancient Shalom Al Yisrael Synagogue in
Jericho was burned to the ground, MK Rabbi Binyamin Elon of the
Yisrael Beteinu/One Nation opposition party called upon Prime
Minister Ehud Barak to attack the PA=92s Oasis casino in Jericho.
The holy site was totally destroyed, including Torah scrolls and
holy books that were inside. Elon stated that if the casino were
destroyed, the loss of income for Yassir Arafat would cause him
more pain than the death of the Arab youths that he continues
to send to the front lines to attack IDF soldiers.
