End of the world? Sect withdraws kids from Utah schools
September 12, 2000
Web posted at: 2:27 PM EDT (1827 GMT)

COLORADO CITY, Arizona (AP) -- Hundreds of members of a polygamous Mormon splinter group have pulle d their children out of the public schools along the Utah-Arizona state line -- preparing, perhaps, for the end of the world.

Only about 350 students have enrolled in the four schools in the desert towns of Colorado City and Hildale, Utah, compared with 1,400 last year. Dozens of teachers belonging to the Fundamentalist Ch urch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have also quit.

They acted at the direction of Warren Jeffs, who speaks on behalf of his aged father, Rulon Jeffs, the church's prophet. In mid-July, Warren Jeffs ordered followers to take their children out of sch ool and cut off contact with former church members.

Church members said they are taking charge of their children's education and schooling them at home , just like other parents across the country. Other people, particularly former members, said the J effs' followers are preparing for the apocalypse their leaders say is at hand.

DeLoy Bateman, a former church member and a science teacher at the Colorado City high school, said church leaders are preaching that the towns will be lifted into heaven with the Second Coming of Je sus Christ.

Around the twin communities, the End of Days is rumored to be either a few days or a few months awa y.

In a statement issued through their Salt Lake City attorney, the Jeffses said: "The Fundamentalist Church and its officers have not made any predictions in regard to the exact date of the Second Com ing. It has long been the teaching of the church that no man knows the hour or the date of that eve nt."

The twin towns were settled in the late 1800s by ranchers who followed the Mormon doctrine of polyg amy. In 1890, the mainstream church disavowed the practice of plural marriage under pressure from t he federal government, which threatened to refuse Utah statehood if it didn't.

But some people have clung to the practice -- among them the fundamentalist sect, founded in 1929 - - and have been excommunicated by the Mormon Church as a result.

Polygamy remains illegal, though it largely goes unpunished, a crime prosecutors say is difficult t o prove and usually victimless. Still, members of the sect are wary of outsiders and hostile to tho se who have broken with the faith.

The Associated Press faxed a dozen questions to church leaders. Two were answered. The rest were ig nored.

Church leaders are said to have prophesied several dates for the Second Coming, only to see them co me and go. In 1993, Rulon Jeffs told high school graduates not to attend college since the world wo uld end before they could finish, according to Bateman.

Since the start of the school year two weeks ago, many classrooms have been nearly empty. Attendanc e was down so much at one middle school that authorities closed it and sent the remaining youngster s to another school. Most of the sect's youngsters are being schooled at home instead.

Colorado City Mayor Dan Barlow, a church member, said the decree issued in July was merely "a sugge stion that people take that responsibility for themselves." He started home-schooling his children a year ago.

"I just felt like I could do much better teaching them the things I know and give them some spiritu al teaching as well," he said.

More than 6,000 of Rulon Jeffs' followers live in Colorado City and Hildale. An estimated 2,000 to 6,000 more are scattered around the western United States and Canada, according to Mike King, an in vestigator with the Utah attorney general's office.

In 1942, members signed over ownership of their homes to a trust established by the church, which n ow has tens of millions of dollars in land and in businesses spread across the West and into Canada .

The two desert towns are modest, with wandering dirt and paved roads lined with houses clad in untr eated plywood. Because residents do not own their homes, they cannot borrow the money to improve th em. Toys and bikes litter the often grassless yards where children -- girls in pigtails and long dr esses, boys in jeans and plaid shirts -- watch outsiders with suspicion.

Rulon and Warren Jeffs live in large gated homes in Hildale and are said to have dozens of wives.

Lenore Holm, a former member, said Warren Jeffs moved back to Hildale from Salt Lake City about two years ago and has been tightening his grip on the flock, arranging marriages with young women -- s ometimes as young as 15 -- and driving those who challenge him, like Holm, out of the church.

"Since Warren moved down, that's when everything went wacko-Waco," Holm said. "It's felt more and m ore like a cult."

About six months ago, Holm said, she refused to let her 16-year-old daughter become the second wife of a 39-year-old handyman who did work on Warren Jeffs' home. She said the church excommunicated h er and is trying to evict her and her 10 children living at home.

"Because we didn't break the laws of Arizona, they want our home and they want our children on the street," Holm said.

Members are told not to talk to family members who leave the church and not to do business with apo states, making it difficult for them to find work.

Church attorney Scott Berry said apostates distort the facts, but he would not comment directly on her allegations.

 House Votes on Boy Scouts' Policy

 By JIM ABRAMS, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - A small group of House lawmakers charging that the
Boy Scouts' policy toward gays was a badge of intolerance moved Tuesday
to repeal the organization's federal charter.

The legislation, heading for an evening vote, was another challenge to the
long-standing relationship between the Boy Scouts and the federal
government rising out of the group's stance on excluding homosexuals.

The bill's chief sponsor, Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Calif., said she was a Girl
Scout and one of her sons was a Boy Scout. ``We're not saying the Boy
Scouts are bad; we're saying that intolerance is bad,'' she said in introducing
the measure earlier this summer.

``We're disappointed that this bill would even be considered,'' countered Boy
Scouts spokesman Gregg Shields. He said having a federal charter is an
honor and ``we hope to continue to live up to that honor.''

The Boy Scouts of America got its federal charter in 1916, six years after it
was founded. It is one of about 90 groups with such designation, an honorary
title given to patriotic, charitable and education organizations.

While it confers no specific benefits, receiving a federal charter is a mark of
prestige and national recognition for a group.

The Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision in June, upheld the Boy Scouts' ban on
homosexuals serving as troop leaders. That ruling may also give legal
backing to the 6.2 million-member organization's rejection of gay youths as
members.

The Scouts asserted that homosexual conduct is inconsistent with the
values it seeks to instill.

But while the high court sided with the group's First Amendment rights to
``expressive association,'' the Boy Scout relationship with the federal
government was brought into question when President Clinton, five days
before the ruling, issued an executive order barring discrimination on the
basis of sexual orientation in federally conducted education and training
programs.

The Interior Department in August asked the Justice Department for
guidance on how that order affected the holding of Boy Scout Jamborees on
federal lands.

GOP presidential nominee George W. Bush (news - web sites) and other
Republicans quickly accused the administration of trying to throw the scouts
off federal lands. But Attorney General Janet Reno, in a statement this
month, said the tradition of Boy Scouts using federal lands for camping and
other activities could continue.

Woolsey has also urged Clinton to resign as honorary president of the Boy
Scouts because of the policy toward gays. Her office said the White House
has not responded to that request. Shields said every president since Taft
has served as honorary president.

 The bill number is H.R. 4892.

New Evidence of Great Flood Found

By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Artifacts found at the bottom of the Black Sea provide
new evidence that humans faced a great flood, perhaps that of the biblical
Noah, thousands of years ago, the discoverers say.

Remnants of human habitation were found in over 300 feet of water about 12
miles off the coast of Turkey, undersea explorer Robert Ballard said
Tuesday.

``There's no doubt about it, it's an exciting discovery,'' Ballard said in a
telephone interview from his research ship. ``We realize the broad
significance the discovery has and we're going to do our best to learn more.''

Fredrik Hiebert of the University of Pennsylvania, chief archaeologist for the
Black Sea project, said from the ship, ``This find represents the first concrete
evidence for the occupation of the Black Sea coast prior to its flooding.''

Many ancient Middle Eastern cultures have legends of a great flood, including
the Bible story of Noah.

Columbia University researchers William Ryan and Walter Pittman
speculated in their 1997 book ``Noah's Flood'' that when the European
glaciers melted about 7,000 years ago, the Mediterranean Sea overflowed
into what was then a smaller freshwater lake to create the Black Sea.

Last year Ballard found indications of an ancient coastline miles out from the
current Black Sea coast. His new discovery provides evidence that people
once lived in that now inundated region.

Ballard, a National Geographic Society explorer in residence, said he had
studied shells found along the ancient coastline and found two types. One
group is an extinct type of freshwater shell, while the second is from
saltwater shellfish.

The saltwater shells date back 6,500 years, while the freshwater shells all
date to 7,000 years ago and older.

``So,'' he said Tuesday, ``we know that there was a sudden and dramatic
change from a freshwater lake to a saltwater sea 7,000 years ago.

``And we know that as a result of that flood a vast amount of land went
underwater.

``And we now know that that land was inhabited. What we don't know is who
these people are, we don't know how broad their settlements were ... but
we're expanding our studies to try to determine that.''

Ballard said his team, using remote-controlled underwater vessels with
cameras, located a former river valley beneath the sea and in that valley was
a collapsed structure, including some preserved wooden beams that had
been worked by hand.

The structure was ``clearly built by humans,'' and was characteristic of
stone-age structures built 7,000 years ago in the interior of Turkey, Ballard
said.

It contained a stone chisel and two other stone tools with holes drilled
through them, he said, adding that nothing has been removed from the site.
``When you first find a site you don't just run in there and start picking up
things,'' he said.

The group is now mapping the site and looking for other structures in the
area.

``This is a work in progress,'' Ballard said. ``It is critical to know the exact era
of the people who lived there, and to that end we hope to recover artifacts
and wood for carbon dating so we can figure out what sort of people lived
there and the nature of their tools.''

The discovery occurred within Turkey's coastal waters and that country's
Directorate of Monuments and Museums has a representative on the
research vessel.

Ballard, best known for finding the remains of the ships Titanic, Bismarck and
Yorktown, among other discoveries, operates the Institute for Exploration in
Mystic, Conn.

His expedition is sponsored by the National Geographic Society, which is
planning a book and television programs on Ballard's Black Sea research.

Subject: [BPR] - Arafat reneges on Joseph's Tomb promise

Arafat reneges on Joseph's Tomb promise

                  By Amos Harel
                  Ha'aretz Military Correspondent

The Palestinian Authority is reneging on its commitment to accommodate
Israeli repair and restoration work at damaged structures in the Joseph's
Tomb compound in Nablus. Israeli requests to the PA on this matter have
yet to show results.

In the aftermath of "Naqba" riots last May, PA Chairman Yasser Arafat
promised Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak that repair work could be done at
the Nablus compound. Hundreds of Palestinians tried to break into the tomb
area during the May skirmishes. Members of "Tanzim" para-military
organization fired shots at Israeli soldiers in the compound area, wounding
one IDF officer. IDF and Border Police gunfire resulted in the deaths of two
armed Palestinians, and injuries to many demonstrators.

After the violence, Arafat assented to the repairs at Joseph's Tomb. Two
sorts of repair work are required: compound fortifications need to be re-
installed, and damage to a closed-circuit television system needs to be
repaired; also, structures burned by Palestinian protestors during the
September 1996 Western Wall Tunnel disturbances require repair work.

Prolonged discussions between Israel and the PA after the 1996 rioting didn't
lead to a repair work agreement. Palestinian requests concerning
construction licenses were interpreted by Israeli officials as bureaucratic
ploys designed to kill time. IDF officers have turned to Palestinian officials in
recent months, asking to undertake the repairs. The Palestinians have been
evasive.

The fate of repairs at the compound now depends upon "the intervention of
top [Israeli] political leaders" Israeli security sources say. Ultimately, they
admit, Arafat must be disposed toward giving the go ahead for the work - and
Arafat's inclinations are affected by developments in the talks with Israel.

Joseph's tomb has been one of the West Bank's volatile flash-points since
the signing of the Oslo accords and settlers declared the building a yeshiva.
Virtually any attempt by Jewish settlers to bring equipment into the
compound is interpreted by Palestinians as a political ploy. Interim accord
negotiations led to an understanding prohibiting changes in the status of
sites sacred to Judaism that are within Palestinian Authority "A" areas.

Subject: [BPR] - A New "Jesus"
From: bpr-list@philologos.org("Moza")
Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 11:44:11 -0400

A New "Jesus"

Through many years of Bible study I could never understand what Jesus
meant by His breathtaking statement, "For many shall come in my name,
saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many." (Matthew 24:5). Since I
have watched this Scripture being fulfilled by much of the modern
religious world, it is now seems clear to me. Jesus was prophesying
that false prophets and false religious movements would use His name,
preach with His name, and even confess faith in His name, but would be
serving a different Jesus. I believe He was suggesting that the
ultimate deception would be by men and women that actually say, "Jesus
is the Christ," but do so only in name, not in reality.

The New "Jesus" has the same name and is preached or promoted with the
same great Bible verses, but bears no recognition to the historic
message of the cross. The cross-centered life, where the flesh is
crucified and the self-life is denied, has no relationship to the
flamboyant Christianity of today that looks more extravagant than
Hollywood. The Jesus of the Bible, the risen Lord, who is presently at
the Father's right hand, would be totally repulsed by the worldly hype,
the godless singers, and all the fanfare that is the heart of today's
church world. He would march into these unholy temples and drive out
the false prophets that preach for wealth and gain. He would call them
"vipers" and "hypocrites." They would hate Him today just like the
Pharisees hated Him in their day. Let's look at a few clear
differences between the Son of God Himself and the new "Jesus" of
today's deception.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The new "Jesus" makes people wealthy, famous, and provides them
extravagant lifestyles.
The crucified Jesus says, "Deny yourself, take up your cross, forsake
all, and follow me." This new "Jesus" says, "Indulge yourself." The
Lord says, "Humble yourself."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The new "Jesus" is a lawless "Jesus." The commandments of God are out
and any standard of Godliness is rejected and even repulsed.

The Biblical Jesus plainly said, "He that saith, I know him, and
keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him."
(I John 2:4).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The new "Jesus" loves for his followers to be loose, even dress vulgar
or at best casual. For the first time in church history, the dress
standard for God's house has become immodest, confusing, and cheap.
The new "Jesus" has no standard of right and wrong.
The historic Jesus floods human hearts with reverence and even an
awesome fear at the very mention of His name. Our Savior still
instills in "saved hearts" a beautiful desire to come before Him in
purity, holiness, and godly attire.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The new "Jesus" loves for women to be Jezebels and for men to be
effeminate. Cross-dressing is the love of those where this new "Jesus"
has manifested his dark confusion. It is a new "Christianity" where
the masculine "Jesus" has become a soft, slick, effeminate "Jesus."

The true eternal Son of God is absolutely masculine, authoritative, and
Sovereign. There is no sign or sense of weakness, compromise, or
effeminacies in Him or His person. Even the effeminate pictures
painted by perverted artists are totally out of order in a believer's
home. Do not ever use statues or pictures of Him to visualize or aid
you in worship. It is idolatrous and forbidden in Scripture.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The new "Jesus" loves the new music. The "blood" songs are too
old-fashioned. Songs about the Rapture, the Great Tribulation, or the
Millennial Reign are out and the new dominion songs are in. A favorite
is, "Come Ride With Me." It is a "Manifest Son's of God" song that has
the Son of God replaced by this new "Jesus" that is riding through the
land. The new songs are Beatle-type music. Beautiful women who are
seen dancing down the aisles are now said to be "returning the arts to
the church." The music prepares the emotions of these deceived
worshippers to receive the spirits of this new "Jesus."
Music is still a marvelous way to worship the Lord of the Church. Our
Jesus desires our worship, but will not receive anything but spiritual
worship and spiritual music. Soulical music or fleshly music that
feeds the appetites of the carnal man cannot be used for our Lord in
praise to Him. Our eternal Savior was the Creator of all things and
powerful spiritual music was at the core of the Heavenly scene as all
creation was planned.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The new "Jesus" says, Take the cross off the wall" so that sinners
won't be offended. The truth is that it isn't sinners that are
offended by the cross; it is the new "Jesus" that is offended. The
cross of salvation has been replaced by a false salvation born in hell.
The new "Jesus" had to go to hell and be born again instead of dying on
the cross. What an absolutely clear picture of what this new "Jesus"
really represents. He is an imposter from hell masquerading right in
the churches that claim the name of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.

The true Lord of the church was crucified on a cross of shame as our
substitute. His death decided forever that Satan had lost and was
destined for defeat. Satan has used every idea that hell could produce
to rob that cross of its glory. Every effort has failed and this last
scheme is the devil's grand finale. It too will fail, but will serve
to show the world the final bankruptcy of Satan's kingdom.

[VW Editor: However, we are not supposed to have crosses "on the wall".
God commanded "You shall not make to yourselves any...likeness of
anything..." (Ex20:4) Please see:
"http://www.cet.com/~voice/library/10comand.htm#2" and following Q/As]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The new "Jesus" wants a worldly kingdom to take over government and to
establish authority over the whole earth. He desires earthly power on
a grand scale and will stop at nothing to force everyone to be under
his control. This new "Jesus" has no moral principles in operating His
religious systems. His followers are already talking about wars,
military crusades, and kicking people's b---, etc. as they establish
his political system on this earth.
The Nazarene we worship has no political design. His kingdom is
spiritual and "cometh not with observation" (Luke 17:20) until the
time of judgments against sin. It is the Father that will give Him His
kingdom and holiness will be the principles of government. The Son of
God will sit upon the "Throne of David" and the kingdoms of the world
will worship the Lamb of God with everlasting joy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The New "Jesus" will eventually be manifest as an out and out
homosexual. Homosexuality is not just another sin in the long list of
sins. Homosexuality is rebellion against the very creation of mankind.
It is sin against the "image of God." It is a form of depravity that
confronts God in His very nature as the masculine Creator. This sin
will be the heart and soul of Satan's false kingdom that this new
"Jesus" is promoting. Daniel clearly shows this expression of the
false "Jesus" and the Antichrist personality in Daniel 11:36-39.

The precious Son of God is truly God manifest in the flesh. His nature
is divine and every expression of homosexuality will be banished from
the face of the New Earth. Jesus is the image of the Father and His
new glorified saints will be pure, sinless, and resurrected in His
likeness.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The New "Jesus" is spectacular and will do many paranormal things to
titillate your flesh. His greatest attraction is the lying wonders
that he is already manifesting, but what is to come will be even more
convincing to the sign seekers. The few things that are already
occurring give us some idea of what he will produce. The
characteristics of these paranormal events will best be described as
"spectacular nonsense." Here are a few of the things already
occurring:
- Angel feathers falling (Angels do not have feathers.)
- Gold dust falling on his worshippers.
- Gold filling, gold crosses appearing in teeth.
- Oil appearing in the palms of hands.
- Drunkenness, wallowing in a stupor, etc.
- Strange events in church, pulpits split by lightning, sound systems
   shorting out, lightning system short-circuiting.
A perfect way to know that you are worshipping the new "Jesus" is if
any of these signs occur to you. If your church is experiencing these
signs, your church has changed to worshipping the new "Jesus."
The King of Kings will never titillate your flesh to try to gain your
surrender. His Word says, "Come now, and let us reason together
(mental activity), saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they
shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall
be as wool." (Isaiah 1:18). He saves by the preaching of His Word and
your acceptance of His gospel. Satan has no beauty, his offer is
deceptive and his promises are lies, so he must deceive you into his
false religious system. The Lord of Lords is creator of the earth, but
His invitation is based on truth and life-changing reality. You must
choose Him because you understand who He is and His offer to you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The new "Jesus" is an "angel of light" from the pit of hell. He will
appear on walls and in strange paranormal ways. He will likely appear
as some great light or in a strange dream or revelation. Some of the
ways this strange "Jesus" appears may sound similar to some Biblical
event. Be careful to learn the voice of Scripture because there may
well be an event that only a discerning heart can know the truth.

The Son of God will always invite you to discern by truth, rightly
divided before you commit your soul. Our Redeemer never mixes a little
truth with a lot of error. Every expression of the Lord will be pure,
totally Biblical and sensible. He never manifests Himself in
"spectacular nonsense." He said, "I am the good shepherd, and know my
sheep, and am known of mine." (John 10:14).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The new Jesus loves the many corrupt Bible translations. The new
religious crowd hates "absolute truth" and they are arrogant in
supporting corrupt versions. This new "Jesus" loves anything that
connects the Scripture to the Roman Catholic Church. The constant
reduction of Jesus as Divine, the changing of Him as Master to merely a
teacher, plus thousands of other changes have been a great plus for the
new "Jesus." The new worshippers have followed the design of the new
versions by referring to the Lord Jesus in many cheap ways. Often He
is simply called "JC." Kenneth Copeland said that when he read where
Jesus said, "I am," he just smiled and said, "I am too."
The Lord Jesus is the Word of God. The written Word, when true to the
original text is just as truly the Word in written form as He is the
Word in living form. The Apostle John settled who Jesus is in His
Gospel. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and
the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things
were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light
shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." (John
1:1-5).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The new "Jesus" is delighted to have Mary as his co-redeemer. Mary and
her many false apparitions will continue to gain great popularity. One
Catholic priest in Charlotte was speaking to a "Women's Aglow" meeting.
They asked the false priest why Catholics prayed to Mary. He answered,
"Mary can con the Father better than Jesus." I heard these words with
my own ears or I would be unwilling to print them. The new "Jesus" is
Catholic, Charismatic, Evangelical, Mormon, Islamic, Hindu, etc. all
put together. The only group that this new "Jesus" cannot tolerate is
Bible-believing fundamentalists. We are hated by every manifestation
of this spirit.

Jesus Christ gave great honor to His earthly mother. She was a genuine
saint of God, but is no greater than any other obedient person. She
awaits the resurrection and it is nothing but necromancy (communication
with the dead) to suggest that she can talk to you or take you to God.
The Son of God clearly rejects all such foolishness about His earthly
mother.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The new "Jesus" is a sinner-friendly "Jesus." In fact, the new "Jesus"
is also "sin-friendly." Nothing is to be condemned or rejected by the
followers of this "Jesus." Tolerance is the word they have coined.
This new "Jesus" wants you to let him judge the sin and the sinner, but
remember his god is the devil and sin is his character.
The Son of God loves the sinner, but comes to him with conviction of
sin so the sinner can be redeemed. The first step towards the saving
merits of the Lord is to understand that you are a sinner. He will
never approach anyone in anything less than His holiness. The true
"sinner-friendly" Savior comes in such holiness that the sinner is
smitten in guilt. This is the true friend of lost souls.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Conclusion

There are many further differences between the new "Jesus" and the true
Jesus. Millions are being deceived. The flesh has no capacity to
discern between this titillating "Jesus" that comes in lies and
deceiving powers. The Word of God alone is our safety. Every believer
has the responsibility to warn souls of this darkness and to help the
few that are willing to listen. If Jesus warned of this false or new
"Jesus," then everyone should take the facts seriously. Just because a
preacher is smooth, soft, and is kind to you does not prove a thing.
Is he preaching the new "Jesus" or is he preaching the old-time truth
that saves? There is no excuse for the fact that you do not know
better.

You can get on your knees right in your own world and surrender to the
Lord Jesus Christ. Give Him all and be willing to obey all of His
Words. "It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every
word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." (Matthew 4:4).

*** 34 Fla. students ingest rat poison

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Thirty-four middle-school students
apparently ingested rat poison that had been sprinkled on salsa,
authorities said Tuesday. Two seventh-graders were being questioned.
Fifteen students were taken to emergency rooms for headaches, stomach
pains and nausea, but all were released, said Lt. Glenda Hopkins, a
spokeswoman for Jacksonville Fire-Rescue Department. Blood tests will
be conducted to confirm what the students ingested, but Shands
Jacksonville hospital authorities said the students apparently
ingested small amounts of a rat poison called Talon-G. It is fatal to
humans only in large, repeated doses. Principal Richard Scott said
two seventh-grade students, ages 12 and 15, were being questioned by
authorities about the incident. Their names were being withheld. See

*** Kohl, Gorbachev mark united Germany

BERLIN (AP) - Former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, whose reputation as a
statesman for achieving German reunification has been sullied in a
party-funding scandal, got a rare public show of support Tuesday: a
warm handshake from one-time Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.
Gorbachev, who negotiated the peaceful end of the post-war division
of Europe with Kohl and others a decade ago, reached out to the
former German leader before speaking at an event marking the 10th
anniversary of a historic agreement paving the way for German
reunification. It was signed by the two German states and the four
World War II victors. The former Soviet leader lauded the courage and
foresight of Kohl and his former foreign minister, Hans-Dietrich
Genscher, in pushing for swift reunification while also working to
ease Soviet fears that a united Germany could pose a new threat. See

*** EU echelon to probe U.S. chiefs

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - Senior members of a European Union committee
said Tuesday they want U.S. intelligence chiefs to testify on whether
an alleged American-led eavesdropping network monitors the businesses
of its European allies. European Parliament Vice President Gerhard
Schmid, a German who is a senior member on the committee
investigating the alleged Echelon spy network, said he would like to
see the U.S. National Security Agency head, Air Force Lt. Gen.
Michael V. Hayden, come before the committee. Schmid said he wants
the American intelligence chiefs to discuss how the NSA gathers
intelligence. In testimony before the U.S. House Intelligence
Committee in April, Hayden and CIA Director George Tenet denied
reports the U.S. was involved in spying on Europeans and Americans as
part of a satellite surveillance network. See

*** The Netherlands OKs gay marriages

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) - The Netherlands lawmakers on Tuesday
gave same-sex couples the right to marriage and all the trappings,
including adoption and divorce - approving legislation that provides
gays rights beyond those offered in any other country. The new law
will bring little change to the daily lives of most gays in a country
that has long been at the vanguard of gay rights. But activists say
it marks a bold step toward recognizing the equality of gay and
heterosexual unions in the Netherlands. Lawmakers thumped their desks
in approval when the vote passed 109-33 in the lower house, and some
of the scores of witnesses in the packed public gallery applauded and
embraced. The bill still needs approval by the upper house,
considered a formality, and is expected to take effect next year. See

*** Indonesia may buy Russian copters

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - Indonesia is considering buying Russian
military aircraft for the first time since 1965, sidestepping a U.S.
arms embargo, officials said Tuesday. Navy chief Adm. Achmad Sutjipto
said his service wants four Mil-17 helicopters to deploy marines to
the country's trouble spots. Western nations, particularly the U.S.,
have supplied military equipment to Indonesia in the past. But those
countries embargoed weapons supplies to Jakarta after army-inspired
violence last year in East Timor, a formerly Indonesian-ruled
territory that had just voted for independence. Although the European
Union has since lifted restrictions, the U.S. retained its ban. See

*** House passes ocean measure 390 to 8

WASHINGTON (AP) - With decades of research and billions of dollars
spent on studying the heavens, it's time for Congress to start
setting its sights much lower - into the oceans, that is. That's the
message behind a House measure that passed 390 to 8 Tuesday. "We
spend billions of dollars on the space program because it fascinates
us as a people," said Rep. Jim Greenwood, R-Pa., the bill's sponsor.
"In comparison, we spend pennies on ocean research. But our survival
is completely dependent on the survival of the oceans." Greenwood
said the ocean floor should be searched for plants and animals with
human lifesaving potential, saying cures for AIDS, cancer, diabetes
and other diseases may be found in the ocean. See

*** Oneidas changing gambling habits

VERNON, N.Y. (AP) - The Oneida Indian Nation is changing the way
people gamble with a cashless, computerized system that allows
patrons to make dinner reservations, go shopping or set a golf
tee-off time as they play for the big jackpot. The system, developed
by the Oneidas as a way to get around a New York state law outlawing
coin-operated slots, reduces costs associated with handling money and
is useful in monitoring the behavior patterns of customers so that
casino operators can better cater to them. "What we are trying to do
is bring the entire resort to the person in the most convenient way,"
said Frank Riolo, president of Standing Stone Gaming, the Oneida
enterprise whose gaming system is featured at the Turning Stone
casino and resort in Vernon, N.Y. See

Subject: [BPR] - Yemeni Temple Could Uncover Queen of Sheba
From: bpr-list@philologos.org("Moza")
Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 11:55:54 -0400

 Yemeni Temple Could Uncover Queen of
 Sheba

 By Rajiv Sekhri

 TORONTO (Reuters) - A Canadian archeologist said on Tuesday that his
 team was slowly unraveling the secrets of a 3,000-year-old temple that may
 have belonged to the Queen of Sheba.

 Half-buried under the sands of the southern Arabian desert in northern
 Yemen, the Mahram Bilqis or Temple of the Moon God contains priceless
 documents and artifacts from the time of the biblical queen.

 The temple was a sacred site for pilgrims in Arabia from around 1200 BC to
 550 AD, the time that fits with history's record of the Queen of Sheba and
 her visit to King Solomon of Israel.

 ``To have such historical, religious and cultural connection to one site is
 tremendous. Not often in archeology do we have that.'' Professor Bill
 Glanzman told Reuters.

 Glanzman, who teaches archeology at the University of Calgary and is the
 project's director, said: ``We've probably excavated less than one percent of
 the site, with many of its treasures still buried far beneath the sands.''

 The discovery and excavation of the temple began in 1951 by the late
 American archeologist Wendell Phillips. But it was halted abruptly a year
 later because of political unrest.

 Work was restarted in 1998 by the American Foundation for the Study of
 Man, a nonprofit organization that spearheads such projects.

 Glanzman said the temple could become an ``eighth wonder of the world,''
 attracting people from around the world.

 ``We think it has the potential to become a world-class tourist site, where
 tourists can walk around and really feel what happened thousands of years
 ago.''

 But another expert disagrees.

 ``This is the most optimistic of statements at the moment, given the
economic
 and political situation and the problem of raising money for such things,'' said
 Edward Keall, senior curator of Middle Eastern Archeology at the Royal
 Ontario Museum in Toronto.

 ``I do not expect to see it in my lifetime,'' he said. ``As of the moment, the
 Yemeni government does not have control over the various tribal groups that
 live in the country and who believe that they own the land,'' Keall said.

 But Glanzman tries to sell the importance of the excavation, saying it is as
 important a discovery as the ruins of Pompeii, the pyramids of Giza or the
 Acropolis.

 ``The sanctuary is packed with artifacts, pottery, artwork and inscriptions,
 opening a new door to the ancient civilizations of southern Arabia,'' he said.

 Glanzman said his team could be finished with the excavation within 15
years.

Subject: [BPR] - Bondi Beach To Drown in Sea of Mirrors?
From: bpr-list@philologos.org("Moza")
Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 11:58:53 -0400

Bondi Beach To Drown in Sea of Mirrors?

                     September 11, 2000 - Rising up from the pristine white
                     sand of Bondi Beach is a 10,400 seat monument to
                     Olympic beach volleyball. In just five days, the world's top
                     beach volleyball players will gather there to do battle for the
                     Olympic gold. However, there is another battle that has
                     been ongoing ever since the conception of Bondi Beach as
                     the venue for the 2000 Olympic beach volleyball event -
                     local residents want the Olympics to leave their beach.

                     Numbering around 60,000 residents in Bondi Beach, local
                     protest groups have fought the planning and construction of
                     the Bondi Beach Stadium and attest they will do what it
                     takes to disturb the Olympic beach volleyball event.
                     Perhaps the most disturbing plan is to disrupt the event with
                     what CBC Sports reported as a, "sea of mirrors."

                       Bondi Beach is one of the most well known beaches in the
                                       world and lies just 3 to 4 miles from
                                       downtown Sydney. Being a
                                       non-commercial attraction, the
                                       beach has attracted, on average,
                                       40,000 tourists in one weekend.
                                       Protest groups, like the quasi militant
                                       Bondi Olympic Watch, dedicated to
                                       using non-violent means to combat
                                       the International Olympic
                                       Committee's decision to hold the
                                       event on Bondi Beach, would rather
                                       have the beach used for "Olympic
                                       visitors, not Olympic events."

                                       To combat the Sydney Olympic
                                       Organizing Committee's decision to
                                       use the beach, Bondi Olympic
                                       Watch spokesperson Kevin St.
                                       Alder has vowed to conduct
                     protests during the games that would cause a "serious
                     disruption." According to CBC Sports article, St. Alder's
                     group will employ a "sea of mirrors." Residents around
                     Bondi Beach have agreed to aim thousands of mirrors at the
                     beach volleyball stadium during the event. In addition, the
                     Bondi Olympic Watch group plan to build a wall off mirrors
                     on a small sea cliff facing the venue and have people
                     attending the venue carry small pocket mirrors and target
                     IOC officials.

Subject: [BPR] - KEO time capsule could remain in orbit until 52001 AD
From: bpr-list@philologos.org("Moza")
Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 12:04:25 -0400

August 29, 2000
Web posted at: 5:02 PM EDT (2102 GMT)

By Richard Stenger
CNN.com Writer

(CNN) -- Will Earth still be inhabited 50,000 years from now? A French
organization thinks so. In fact, it's confident enough to send those future
dwellers a gift from space.

The KEO satellite, expected to launch in 2001, would fly high above the
Earth with messages from as many humans as possible, possibly well into
the billions, according to KEO project managers in Paris.

After traveling for 50 millennia in orbit, the satellite would return to the
planet, delivering CD-ROM messages from KEO participants.

To name their satellite project, supporters researched the most frequently
phonemes in major world languages and came up with "K," "E" and "O."

Anyone can submit a message at no cost to KEO via electronic and
conventional mail. Ranging from school children to prisoners, people from
more than 120 countries have already submitted missives for the future,
according to the Paris-based non-profit group.

The messages are uncensored and remain in their original language, but
must not exceed 6,000 characters in length, said Jean-Marc Philippe, a
French artist who founded the project in 1994.

Concerned by how quickly modern civilization has advanced, Philippe came
up with KEO to convince humans to reflect on the common future. Ideally he
hopes to gather messages from every person on the planet.

Philippe chose to send KEO into space rather than bury it on Earth because,
"I felt that space appeals more to the human imagination," he wrote on the
KEO Web site.

"Furthermore complications would have arisen over the question of where and
in what country the record would be buried. Whereas space belonged to
everyone."

Political bodies have lent their support. For example, the president of the
International Olympic Committee endorsed the mission.

The project is relying entirely on contributions, and numerous aerospace
companies have already donated goods or services. Arianespace, the
commercial partner of the European Space Agency, has tentatively agreed to
launch the satellite next year.

The messages will become freely accessible on the Internet following the
launch.

KEO is designed to soar to 8,700 miles (1,400 km) above Earth. It will sport
a pair of decorative wings to give terrestrial observers a better chance to spot
it in the sky. Made of special metal alloys, the wings should open and close
as they pass between sunlight and darkness, using only natural solar power.

The powerless orbiter should drift downward for 50,000 years or so and then
crash into the planet, protected by strong metal alloys as it lands. Should
KEO land in an ocean it would float, Philippe said.

Even if KEO survives, how will future intelligent beings understand the
perhaps billions of messages inscribed on CD-ROMs? The satellite will
include a "user manual," with instructions on how to construct a CD player.

"Like the Rosetta Stone, the information will be represented in such a
manner so as to facilitate the task of decryption," Philippe wrote.

Iraq massing troops near Kurdish areas

                         Source: UPI

Wed Sep 13,2000 -- A Kurdish group said Wednesday that Iraqi troops have
been massing in areas close to the Kurdish-dominant areas in northern Iraq,
raising the possibility of a military attack to regain control of the region. The
group's deputy general commander, Abdel Qader said there are six fixed
troops, estimated at some 50,000 soldiers and backed by tanks and
armored vehicles as well as Revolutionary Guards units, near the Kurdish
areas.

Abdel Qader said "a large military movement in northern Iraq will expand
rejection of the regime's demands at the international level and will
embarrass some people in the regime who call for lifting the embargo" that
was imposed by the United Nations to punish Iraq for invading neighboring
Kuwait in 1990. "It will also allow the U.S. which is currently engaged in a
presidential election campaign to carry out a military action that would help
boost success chances for one of the competing candidates," he said.

Russia and China relations at highest level says Putin

Wed Sep 13,2000 -- Welcoming China's No. 2 leader to the Kremlin,
Russian President Vladimir Putin said the two countries would sign a
friendship treaty next year to strengthen their close ties. Putin told Li Peng,
the head of China's legislature, that relations were "at their highest" and
stressed the importance of regular contacts. He said that a friendship treaty
would be signed next year during a visit to Russia by Chinese President
Jiang Zemin. Putin and Li's talks focused on economic links and military
cooperation, presidential aide Sergei Prikhodko said.

IDF deploys ground-to-air missiles along Lebanese border as tensions

                         Source: Arutz-7

Wed Sep 13,2000 -- Lebanese aggression on the northern border has
intensified over the past two days. Israeli soldiers were forced to fire warning
shots in the air yesterday after Lebanese civilians threw bottles of boiling oil
at them. A meeting on the matter is planned between the residents and O.C.
Northern Command Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi. It was announced today that the
IDF has deployed ground-to-air missiles and other defense measures along
the Lebanese border.

GSS uncovers two major Israeli-Arab cells

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: Arutz-7

Wed Sep 13,2000 -- The General Security Service has uncovered two major
Israeli-Arab cells planning violence against Israeli targets. Some 45 Israeli-
Arabs were arrested, most of them from the city of Um el-Fahm, in what is
known as the Triangle, between Hadera and Afula. Northern Police Chief Alik
Ron said that this was the biggest Israeli-Arab cell uncovered in over ten
years, and that it has ties with the Islamic Movement. The group had
targeted Palestinians "collaborators" with Israel. Some of the cell members
are accused of setting fire to the barber-shop of a suspected collaborator,
trained with home-made weapons, and posted hundreds of posters
threatening to murder collaborators if they do not reveal themselves within a
month.

Yediot Acharonot Arab-affairs commentator Roni Shaked wrote today, "The
organizing [into cells] of dozens of people planning to harm national security
is no longer 'wild weeds...' It is most definitely a worrisome phenomenon.
Again these are Islamic Movement members and again in Um el-Fahm... It is
doubly worrisome because this was not a Hamas or Islamic Jihad initiative,
but rather a home-grown initiative from among Israeli-Arabs. True, the first-
stage targets were collaborators, but it is reasonable to assume that if the
GSS and the police had not caught them, the next stage would have been
Israeli [Jewish] targets."

Arab League Social and Economic Council meets in Damascus

                         Source: Ha'aretz

Wed Sep 13,2000 -- The 66th session of the Arab League Social and
Economic Council began a three-day meeting Wednesday in Damascus to
discuss ways of boosting inter-Arab economic cooperation as a preliminary
step towards achieving economic integration. High on the agenda is the
implementation of the common Arab free-trade agreement and liberating
trade exchange among Arab states. According to recent estimates, the
volume of trade exchange among Arab states will reach U.S. $17 billion this
year, while the volume of Arab investments is expected at more than $2
billion.

Israel may trigger 'religious war'

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: Ha'aretz

Wed Sep 13,2000 -- "Israel is liable to drag the entire region toward
prolonged religious war, should it persist with the demand for sovereignty on
the Temple Mount," Palestinian Culture and Arts Minister Yasser Abed
Rabbo warned yesterday. Abed Rabbo, a member of the PA negotiation
contingent at Camp David, spoke at a press conference in Ramallah. He
expressed concern over the behavior of counterpart Israeli negotiators,
complaining that secular government ministers and others behave like ultra-
orthodox Jews when it comes to the peace process and relations with the
Palestinians.

"By ignoring the significance of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount to more
than a billion Muslims, Israel is playing with fire," Abed Rabbo declared. He
stressed that a Palestinian state would uphold the principle of religious
freedom, and not interfere with procedures at sites considered holy by
Christians and Jews. Israel's adamant position about the Temple Mount, the
PA official added, will embroil the peace process in a series of religious
disputes whose outcome cannot be foretold. Abed Rabbo said that the PA is
considering a proposal by which formal sovereignty over the disputed Old
City area would be transferred to the Islamic "Jerusalem Committee," with
the PA having administrative and other responsibilities at the site.

New PA-Israeli talks to deal with interim agreement formulas

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: Jerusalem Post

Wed Sep 13,2000 -- The framework guiding the contacts between Israeli and
Palestinian negotiators has changed, and instead of trying to reach a final-
status agreement that would solve all problems and "put an end to the
conflict," ways are now being explored that could lead to an interim
agreement, a source in the Prime Minister's Office said yesterday. According
to the source, one of the ideas being discussed is to reach an agreement
that would create a Palestinian state, defer the issue of Jerusalem and not
declare an end to the conflict.

Genetic bar code study promising

Technology could focus treatment

By Tim Bonfield
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Imagine a day when doctors can use a patient's genetic profile to predict with near certainty whether a medication will treat their illness or cause a dangerous side effect.

That day has become much closer with the publication Tuesday of a genetic study of people with asthma, led by University of Cincinnati researcher Dr. Stephen Liggett and co-sponsored by Connecticut-based biotech company.

GLOSSARY

• SNPs: Single nucleotide polymorphisms. A single point of variation within a gene that can influence susceptibility to a disease or response to a medication. A gene can have many SNPs

• HAPs: Haplotypes. Each haplotype reflects one of the many possible combinations of SNPs that can be found on a gene.

• Human Genome Project: A nearly complete effort to map the entire sequence of 3.1 billion subunits of DNA that spell out the human genetic code.

• Asthma: A disease suffered by an estimated 17 million Americans in which the bronchial airway contracts to cause wheezing and difficulty breathing.

• Albuterol: The most commonly used drug to control acute asthma attacks.

IF YOU GO

• A genetic test for asthma patients using albuterol could be commercially available within a year, pending regulatory approval.

• Researchers hope to expand the technology to other diseases, such as diabetes and schizophrenia.

• Eventually, genetic screening technology may breathe new life into once-promising medications that have been pulled off the market over concerns about side effects.

The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, analyzed 121 Tristate asthma patients to predict who would respond to albuterol, the most commonly prescribed asthma drug. To do this, researchers organized genetic information in a way they say is like developing a bar code for people.

“We know from experience that some individuals just do not respond very well to some medications, yet others have wonderful responses,” Dr. Liggett said. With this kind of genetic test “we can shorten that trial-and-error period, which would improve care and save costs.”

Overall, the study advances the concept of “personalized medicine,” in which doctors hope to use genetic information to customize an individual's diagnosis and treatment rather than rely on a process of trial and error. By proving the technology works, the study raises several implications:

• A genetic test for asthma patients could be commercially available within a year. An estimated 17 million Americans have asthma, and about 5,000 die from it every year.

• Researchers plan to expand the technology to other diseases, such as diabetes, schizophrenia and heart conditions.

• Eventually, genetic screening technology may breathe new life into once-promising medications that had been pulled off the market over concerns about side effects.

The gene-analyzing technology was developed by Genaissance Pharmaceuticals, a New Haven, Conn.-based company formed in 1997 by researchers affiliated with Yale University.

“We believe this is a landmark event,” said Dr. Gualberto Ruano, chief executive of Genaissance. “We intend to replicate this kind of analysis in many other diseases.”

With the near completion of the Human Genome Project, new understanding about the basic blueprint of the human body has prompted an explosion of biotech research. Among the recent trends has been a focus on single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).

Dr. Liggett and other geneticists have been studying how these tiny variations within a single gene can influence whether a person is likely to develop a disease or how well they may respond to medications.

However, an SNP is like a single line in a bar code; its information and predictive power is limited, Dr. Liggett said. For the asthma study, Genaissance developed entire bar codes, called haplotypes (HAPs), based on combinations of 13 SNPs found on a gene known to influence the disease.

Dr. Liggett said certain HAPs showed strong correlations with how patients responded to medication, but no single SNP had a powerful predictive effect.

In the study, about 12 percent of patients had a type of HAP that made them unresponsive to albuterol. That means a doctor armed with such information could start an asthmatic on any of a dozen other drugs.

“This is a significant observation,” said Dr. William Busse, an asthma expert at the University of Wisconsin. “If we could find a gene variable that would enable a doctor to make predictions about how people would respond to a medicine, it would be very useful.”

Accurate genetic screening also could influence drug development. For example, the diabetic drug Rezulin was pulled from the market after some patients wound up with liver problems.

The once-popular weight-loss drug fen-phen suffered a similar fate when some people suffered heart valve damage.

If dangerous side effects of Rezulin or other drugs can be shown to be limited to people with specific types of HAPs, then patients without those HAPs could safely benefit from the medication, Dr. Liggett said.

ALL THE PRESIDENT'S SCANDALS
Foster planned date with wife File on White House lawyer's computer had engagement, not suicide on agenda

By Paul Sperry © 2000 WorldNetDaily.com

Lending credence to complaints of a botched investigation, former Special Counsel Robert Fiske never seized nor even tried to seize Vincent Foster's computer as evidence after the deputy White House counsel died unexpectedly in 1993, WorldNetDaily has learned.

As a result, Foster's hard drive became a hot potato inside the White House, bouncing from one official's hands to another's -- breaking the chain of custody over and over, before finally, last week, ending up where it has belonged all along -- in the hands of investigators, according to former White House officials who are finally talking publicly about what they know about the Foster case.

Only now are agents for the latest independent counsel, Robert Ray, trying to look at all the files, deleted and undeleted, on what appears to be Foster's hard drive. They're also trying to interview former White House officials who handled the drive, including Jim "Mack" MacDonald, the computer division chief whose story has gone untold -- until now.

Ray has yet to rule on Whitewater and the alleged obstruction part of the Foster case. He will give a summary of his findings on the first couple's shady Ozark investment and the Foster aspect "within the next couple of weeks," said Keith Ausbrook, a senior counsel in Ray's office here. He said the investigation at this point is "still open."

Foster handled the first couple's Whitewater tax returns just before he died, calling it a "can of worms." Top aides for both Clintons frantically searched his office the night he died. One took an armful of file folders to the first lady's office, a uniformed Secret Service agent has testified.

One of the computer files reveals that Foster and his wife planned to go out the same night he was found dead in Fort Marcy Park, according to a White House whistleblower who has read the file and recently turned over evidence to Ray under subpoena. The former computer specialist is scheduled to testify about Foster before a federal grand jury on Thursday.

Critics of the handling of the Foster investigation say the initial failure to secure and search Foster's computer further undercuts claims that the circumstances surrounding his shocking death were thoroughly investigated.

"It doesn't surprise me at all, because he (Fiske) didn't do an investigation," said Accuracy in Media Chairman Reed Irvine.

He points to a Wall Street Journal article suggesting Fiske was ready to rubberstamp the U.S. Park Police's findings in the Spring of 1994 --before he'd explored all the evidence, judging from subsequent dates of FBI "302" interviews of witnesses and dates of lab work.

Asked about it, Fiske admits he failed to confiscate Foster's computer.

"We did not physically take the computer," Fiske said through a spokeswoman in his New York law firm. "But we had the FBI download all the relevant information from his computer and his secretary's."

Such downloading, however, would have missed any deleted files, computer experts say.

Not until Fiske's successor, Kenneth Starr, took over the investigation in August 1994 -- a year after Foster's death -- did authorities become interested in seizing Foster's computer, MacDonald says. Ray's investigators recently contacted MacDonald at his Los Angeles office.

But Starr, who ruled Foster's death a suicide devoid of foul play, never took possession of the computer.

MacDonald, former director of the White House's Information Systems and Technology division, says FBI agents paid him a visit at his New Executive Office Building office in the summer of 1994.

"It was embarrassing for them to ask (for Foster's computer)," he recalled. "I mean, they had no idea where this thing was."

He says the agents later interviewed him at length about it at FBI headquarters.

"There were a lot of guys in there," MacDonald told WorldNetDaily in an exclusive interview. "And they were pretty embarrassed."

"Why the FBI didn't pick it up originally, I have no damn idea," he said. "It should have been picked up within hours of his death."

MacDonald added: "It was pretty ridiculous to me that the FBI would come back almost a year later. I mean, the chain of custody is corrupted."

An inventory check by MacDonald showed Foster's computer missing at the time. It was supposed to be in his old West Wing office. So agents went away empty-handed.

But that's hardly the end of the story.

Several months later, MacDonald says he stumbled on the central-processing unit, or CPU, of Foster's computer while in a meeting in an office on the 2nd Floor of the Old Executive Office Building.

He says he spotted it on the floor and asked, "Whose PC is that?" No one knew, he says, so he checked it out.

"When I picked it up and looked at the serial number, I about fell over, because it was the Foster serial number we'd been looking for," MacDonald said. "I crossed Pennsylvania Avenue and carried it over to the Data Center on the 4th Floor in the NEOB."

He says he wrapped it in plastic, affixed a label to it -- "FOSTER PC" -- and placed it in a tall, wheeled cabinet on the north wall near the VAX mainframes. He says he then locked the cabinet doors.

"I quarantined it, shrink-wrapped it and put it in the Data Center," MacDonald said. "And I told all my managers what it was, and that it needs to be kept there until someone asks for it."

Why didn't he call the FBI to come pick it up?

He claims that he thought that, by then, the investigation was over, and no one was interested in the computer anymore.

But he admitted that he also was nervous about "finding something I wasn't supposed to find," and crossing Clinton appointees trying to control political damage from scandals. (MacDonald, though a life-long Democrat and Clinton-Gore booster, was a holdover from the Bush White House.)

A White House employee, however, has sworn that MacDonald was more than just nervous.

"After Vincent Foster died, I received a call from Jim MacDonald, who wanted me to meet him outside to go for a ride with him. During that ride, Mr. MacDonald informed me that he had found Vincent Foster's computer," said Howard "Chip" Sparks in a June 19 federal court affidavit. Sparks, a White House computer network specialist, worked for MacDonald.

"In the wake of the mysterious circumstances surrounding Mr. Foster's death, Mr. MacDonald was extremely upset by his discovery," Sparks added. "And he told me that he was concerned that he would be killed because of what he had found."

Asked about it, MacDonald downplayed Sparks' account, insisting: "I didn't think someone would shoot me."

On Aug. 8, MacDonald says he got a call from Larry Bagley, an investigator in Ray's office. Bagley would not comment on the call. Shortly after, MacDonald says he got a call from Jim Wright, White House data center operations branch chief, asking about Foster's CPU.

"Jimmy called me recently, saying, 'Where's that PC?'" MacDonald said.

He says he told Wright, "it's in the Data Center in a locked cabinet in the back of the room, shrink-wrapped, where I left it. It should be there."

But according to another of MacDonald's former employees, that's not the full story. In fact, he's left out critical parts, she says.

Enter Sheryl Hall, another whistleblower from the White House computer division.

She says that, yes, Foster's CPU did migrate from his West Wing office, where it stayed for about six months after he died, to the Old Executive Office Building and then to the New Executive Office Building.

But at that point, Foster's hard drive was removed from the CPU and wound up in MacDonald's office, then in another official's office, before finally ending up in Hall's own home, she now confides.

It was Hall, slapped with a subpoena, who just turned over the hard drive to the independent counsel.

Hall last week also turned over notes -- a pile about an inch thick, she says -- documenting the dates and times Foster's equipment was moved, and the dates and times his office called the computer help desk with requests for technical assistance. Hall was the help-desk branch chief at the time.

MacDonald also says he turned over a copy of the notes, something he says was kept in a three-ring binder. But Hall says MacDonald gave his copy of what she put together for him in the binder to White House lawyers, who apparently never turned it over to Starr's investigators.

"They (Ray's investigators) said they'd never seen it," Hall said. "They were clearly surprised."

Here is Hall's version of what happened.

Shortly after finding Foster's CPU, Hall says MacDonald asked her to tap one of her technicians, Dorothy "Dottie" Crumling, to run a software program to break into some of Foster's password-protected files.

The exercise worked. She says they were able to read one file that revealed Foster and his wife had plans for the night of July 20, 1993 -- the day he was found dead.

"One of the files referred to an engagement to go out that evening with his wife," Hall said.

Later in 1994, Hall says MacDonald had a former White House computer contractor, Mike Saunders, remove the hard drive from Foster's CPU. MacDonald kept it in his office, she says.

"It was on Mack's desk," she said.

Neither Crumling, still in the White House, nor Saunders, who works for McLean, Va.-based PRC Litton Inc., could be reached for comment.

When MacDonald left the White House the next year, he gave the hard drive to Jurg Hochuli, who was the Office of Administration finance director, Hall says.

"Jurg had it on a bookshelf behind his desk," she said.

Hall came into possession of the hard drive after she says MacDonald, who hired her, called her and asked her to pick it up from Hochuli, who transferred to the State Department. He now works there under former top Clinton aide Patsy Thomasson.

"Mack called me from California and told me to get it," Hall said. "I've often wondered why he did it."

Hall took the hard drive home. A few years ago, she says, Starr's investigators interviewed her about the White House phone records. Hall at one time was in charge of the PBX system there, too. And Foster's computer got brought up.

Hall says she later agreed to give senior counsel Jay Apperson half of the hard drive (her husband split up the disks). She held back half of it for "insurance," saying she didn't trust Starr.

Now Ray's office has the whole drive. And Hall has been subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury.

She says she was granted immunity from prosecution for taking possession of the Foster hard drive in exchange for the evidence and her testimony. She demanded her husband also be granted immunity before she'd cooperate. Don Hall, a computer contractor, took the hard drive apart.

It's not immediately clear, however, if the hard drive is still readable or even Foster's.

If it is Foster's, it may have been erased or "wiped clean." If it has been erased, or reformatted, FBI experts in computer evidence, using special software and hardware, can still recover files from it.

But wiping a hard disk, which involves running a software process that writes a series of 0s and 1s over characters in text files, renders it unreadable.

Ausbrook wouldn't comment on the hard drive other than to say, "We'll go wherever the evidence is. It that's where it is, that's where we'll go."

Pressed to say whether they've come up with any new leads in the Foster case, Ausbrook said: "You'll just have to wait and see what the conclusions are (in Ray's coming statement) on the Foster score."

MacDonald says he doubts that Foster's drive was "scrubbed," or erased, a standard White House procedure when employees leave the White House or move to another desk in the White House.

But if it was scrubbed, it should have first been copied on a back-up cartridge, he says, and stored in the NEOB. Ray's office has asked Hall about it. A federal judge has already subpoenaed any such cartridge for Foster in a $90 million class-action Filegate suit filed by Judicial Watch Inc.

MacDonald, however, speculates investigators won't find a lot of files, deleted or undeleted, on Foster's drive. He says there are signs Foster didn't use his computer much.

He says that when then-PRC contractor Bob Haas, who worked under Saunders, set up Foster's e-mail account in early 1993, he had trouble running a phone line from the wall to the computer on Foster's cluttered desk.

"His PC was buried with paperwork," MacDonald explained, "and Haas had to dig into the paper."

Also, he claims, Foster never used his "All-in-1" e-mail account -- not once.

CNN AND THE TEMPLE MOUNT

Does CNN have a hidden agenda - or is there another explanation for the
absence of the words "Temple Mount" when referring to the location of the
Holy Temple? In its latest articles on the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations,
CNN.com has described the Jewish People's holiest site as "a site in East
Jerusalem sacred to Moslems and Jews" and "a sensitive mosque
compound in Jerusalem's walled Old City." Both stories mentioned the
Moslem name of the site - al Haram al-Sharif - but "Temple Mount" appeared
nowhere. The last mention of the Temple Mount that is currently accessible
on a CNN news story is from Sept. 8: "Sites sacred to the world's religions
are located in the Old City of Jerusalem, including the area called Temple
Mount by the Israelis and al Haram al-Sharif, or Noble Sanctuary, by
Palestinians, Muslims and Arabs."

During last week's United Nations Millennium Conference, Prime Minister
Barak said, "When young Jesus walked in Jerusalem, he did not see any
mosques or churches - he saw only the Jewish Holy Temple." Comments
can be addressed to the CNN news team at
<http://www.cnn.com/feedback/>.

A petition <http://www.onejerusalem.org> by One Jerusalem calls on the
world community to recognize a united Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty.
The petition was initiated to "bring together Jews and non-Jews, Israelis,
Americans, Europeans, and even Middle Easterners who urgently feel that a
new international effort on behalf of Jerusalem must begin." One Jerusalem
was founded by a diverse group, including MK Natan Sharansky, Rabbi
Chaskel Besser, Douglas Feith, Yechiel Leiter, Prof. Eli Pollak, Ambassador
Dore Gold, and others.

The petition states that Jerusalem under the sovereignty of the State of Israel
is free and open, and that the government has guarded the holy sites and
respected the rights and access of all religious groups. It further declares
that this situation stands in sharp contrast to that which was in effect
between 1948-1967 under Jordanian rule, when Jews and Israeli Arabs were
denied access to holy sites, and when religious persecution led to
desecration and destruction. The petition concludes, "We believe that Israel
has upheld its moral and ethical obligations to the people of the world and
has earned the right to retain sovereignty over all of Jerusalem, according to
the present boundaries. Moreover, we believe that Israel's decision, as a free
and democratic nation, to designate a united and undivided Jerusalem as its
capital, should be respected and recognized by the entire international
community."

WEST NILE FEVER CLAIMS 8TH VICTIM

The West Nile fever claimed its eighth Israeli victim today. A 54-year-old
woman, who had suffered from a severe chronic disease which affected her
immune system, died today at Assaf HaRofeh hospital. Municipal
authorities began a spraying campaign against mosquitoes last night in Hod
HaSharon, and residents were asked to stay in their homes and close their
windows until the "cloud" dissipated. Another 17 localities will be sprayed in
the coming days, including Tiberias, Acre, Tsfat, and Karmiel. Ten more
people were diagnosed today with the virus at hospitals in the Sharon region
and in the North.

The Environment Ministry agreed to the spraying of the dangerous chemical
only after it was ascertained that a "clear danger" existed, based on three
criteria: A large amount of adult mosquitoes; people or animals in the area
had taken ill; and the failure of wide-scale and thorough methods to control
the mosquito population.

MORE SLA SOLDIERS LEAVE

The number of Southern Lebanese Army soldiers and their families in Israel
continues to drop. After seeking refuge in Israel following the IDF withdrawal
from Lebanon almost four months ago, some of them have concluded that
they would rather return to their homes. Five families departed last night;
upon reaching Lebanon, the women and children were allowed to continue on
their way, while the men were arrested. Some 10% of SLA soldiers in Israel
have returned to Lebanon, according to IDF sources.

SPECIAL OSLO ANNIVERSARY INSERT:

Interviews with Oslo architect Ron Pundak and Elyakim Ha'etzni, in honor of
today's 7th anniversary of the signing of the Oslo Accords on the White
House lawn.

Ron Pundak, often called one of the architects of Oslo and a partner to the
secret Oslo negotiations, was asked by Arutz-7's Ariel Kahane today what
he felt are Israel's practical gains from these seven years of Oslo. Pundak
responded, "First of all, Israel is currently at the pinnacle of the process that
I hope will lead to a final agreement between Israel and a Palestinian state.
But in addition, from a historical view, we must keep in mind that our peace
agreement with Jordan, and the openness we enjoy from the Arab world, and
from the entire world, and the warm international receptions accorded to
Barak, and even to Netanyahu, and of course to Peres and Rabin - all of
these are a result of Oslo.

A-7: Many people feel that these things are not the result of Oslo, but of
totally different factors... Aside from that, however, when Oslo was signed,
we were promised peaceful relations with the Moslem countries, but the fact
is that there is no peace agreement with any other country aside from
Jordan. Pundak: Israel has representations in Qatar, and Oman, and Tunisia -

A-7: Yes, but no ambassadors, and this is how international relations are
measured. Pundak: I'm not sure if that's true, but if you check the Foreign
Ministry figures even regarding ambassadors, you will see amazing things, in
Africa and Asia. But anyway I don't think that this is how we should
measure it - we don't have to take an inventory of ambassadors. Nor do I
think that we should argue about other results of Oslo: I'll say that over the
past years there were less terror attacks, and then you'll say that there were
more victims, so I'll say that in general we have had hardly any terrorism over
the past two years, and you'll say that it's because Israel has succeeded in
containing it, and I'll say no, it's because of our cooperation with the
Palestinian Authority - I think that instead of talking about what I think is the
amazing inventory of quiet and international openness, etc., we should
concentrate more on the historic point of view, as follows: Historically, the
Oslo process is primarily a Zionist act, in that we are headed for a clear
definition of a Jewish and Israeli state, without the conquest of another
people. I must say that this is at a great price, one that I personally feel - we
will have to detach ourselves from areas of Eretz Yisrael that I am historically
more attached to than Tel Aviv. But in order to reach a state that is not bi-
national, and to ensure the survival of the Jewish community here, we must
do this: Oslo is a re-division of this land into two clear states.

A-7: According to this, you will soon want to come to a similar agreement
with the Israeli Arabs, as we see that they are also headed for terrorism, and
they want land, so you will want the same arrangement and division with
them? Pundak: First of all, I don't see the same level of terrorism coming
from Israeli Arabs -

A-7: Because our Israeli police are still in charge there, thank G-d. Pundak:
I do see a problem with the relations between Arabs and Israelis, but again
the greatness of Oslo is that it will clearly define nationalities, and the way
will be clear so that an Israeli-Arab can choose to cross the border and live
there [in the PA] if he wishes to... But at the same time, I want to define
every person in the State of Israel - whether Jew or Arab, or even a new
immigrant whose mother was born non-Jewish in Russia - I want to define
every man as a man, and that the State has a clear character, namely, that
which it is today. Whoever wants to live in total equality, even if with the
rights or the character of a recognized minority, we will help him to do so,
but only through peace, only through historic compromise... Otherwise,
what will happen is what you said, but with violence...

A-7: ...You know that even left-wing speakers don't speak about peace
anymore, but at most the "end of conflict..." Pundak - I don't agree: There
are demonstrations for peace, and peace stickers all over the place, but the
truth is that none of this matters, because it's just talk. What's important is
what happens in the field. We are in the midst of a major process that will
take time... I am not in favor of an overnight change to a New Middle East;
no matter what agreement we sign, it will take a generation for both sides to
educate themselves as to how it works...

A-7: But it may bring a very severe and violent conflict first, as Prime
Minister Barak has warned... Pundak: True, and at the end, we will sign the
same agreement that we could have signed now

A-7: So what will we have gained [by the Oslo process], if there is violence
and clashes all along the way? Pundak: This is why I call upon both sides
to avoid the need for war in order to get to peace, because it will be the same
peace in any event...

Kahane then spoke with long-time anti-Oslo activist Elyakim Ha'etzni of
Kiryat Arba. Ha'etzni was up in arms: "How is he [Pundak] not ashamed to
continue to talk about a process for which he is responsible that has brought
catastrophe upon Israel, as everyone sees... If he were on the last helicopter
out of here, as in Vietnam, he would still have something to say to defend
the process! His position is, 'don't confuse me with the facts, I've already
made up my mind.' This process leads not to peace, as he says, but to the
dismantling of the State of Israel! Who doesn't see this!?"

Ha'etzni continued, "...He [Pundak] says that for the past two years there
has been no terrorism. Do you know what Oslo has done? It has turned
terrorism from a tactical threat into a strategic threat. Today, those who are
responsible for Oslo keep threatening us that if we don't continue, the
Palestinians will use terrorism against us! Originally they said there was no
threat of terrorism, because we were only giving them a certain amount of
guns, and each one was registered, and in any event we could always
reverse the process, etc., etc.... But now, after it's too late, they threaten us
with the opposite: We can't reverse the process, because there will be a
war!... Arafat in fact now has three armies: He did not dismantle Hamas
and the Islamic Jihad, in violation of the agreements, and he has his special
Tanzim force of the Fatah, and behind them is a regular army. This triple
threat can put all of Israel's cities through pure hell! If today Barak threatens
us with cemeteries, it's a result of those who gave Arafat the weapons with
which to do this!"

A-7: The fact is that we are no longer in control of practically all of the
Palestinians - is this not a consolation? Ha'etzni: Look, after you throw out
the baby with the bathwater and the baby is dead, you say at least we got
rid of the dirty water. Thanks a lot! There weren't other ways of doing this,
such as autonomy? And even to create autonomy, why did they have to
bring these terrorists from Tunisia? If we give them the Jordan Valley, then
they will control the entire land mass from Teheran all the way to Petach
Tikva. We will be - we already are - living on the edge of an abyss!"

 Hamas Urges Resistance

Sheik Ahmed Yassin the spiritual leader of Hamas movement said that "the
important thing is not declaring a country but keeping the rights of the
Palestinian people topped by 'the right of return' and the full
domination on Jerusalem, assuring that the Palestinian people, Arafat
and the Islamic Nations have no choice except resistance in order to get
Jerusalem and the Palestinians back."

He added that "talks about the country must be preceded by arrangement
to the internal Palestinian positions, fighting corruption and keeping
the human rights."

In answering on the negotiations concerning the critical causes like
Jerusalem that form an achievement for the Palestinian side, Sheik
Yassin said "any progress in the Palestinian cause is an achievement and
this one is important yet we refuse any concessions and the settlements
and Jerusalem as well as the refugees must come back. We also refuse
dividing the cause to simple points for that the whole must be carried
out and not the parts, saying that Jerusalem is an Islamic and Arabic as
well as being Palestine's capital which is an occupied land that is dear
to us for it is a part of the Moslems' dogma and we will not accept
changing the history."

He added that "Jerusalem can not be in the trash basket, not for sale or
trade and not for nationalization and we absolutely refuse any of these
ideas because it must by under the Arab and Islamic domination." Arabic

 Jihad Denounces Delay In Announcing A Palestinian Country

The opposition reactions for the Palestinian central council's decision
have increased concerning the delay in announcing the Palestinian
country on 13th of current September as was intended. In Gaza, the
Islamic Jihad movement assured that delaying announcing the Palestinian
country was expected due to the allied U.S position in favor of Israel.
Abu Tarek - one of the movement's leaders - said to sound of Palestine
radio that " the former agreements did not commit Israel with specific
dates for announcing the Palestinian country, assuring that this delay
came as a result of the Oslo accord," referring to that there will be no

 Acting FM Meets With The Heads Of The Churches in Jerusalem

Acting Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami met on Monday, on his own
initiative, with the church leaders in Jerusalem, for a discussion
following his visit to the Vatican. During the meeting, he discussed
with them the negotiations with the PLO Authority (PA), in the context
of Jerusalem. The Minister said that the religious issues in Jerusalem
are very important, but that relations should not reach the level of an
interfaith dispute. The Minister added that the parties should not be
arguing about what is sacred to their own religions, but, rather, they
should respect the beliefs of other faiths. Ben- Ami expressed his
support for a dialogue between the representatives of the three
monotheistic faiths, which would contribute to an atmosphere of
coexistence in Jerusalem. Israel Wire

 PM Barak Says Negotiations With Syria Still Possible

Prime Minister Ehud Barak stated in New York City as he prepared to
return home on Monday that Syria is showing signs of a willingness to
reach a peace agreement with Israel. Despite the encouraging words from
Mr. Barak, the Syrian media reports that Damascus is willing to continue
with negotiations with Israel, but not before Israel complies with
United Nations resolutions, namely a total and unconditional withdrawal
from the Golan Heights. Syrian officials have stated that they are
willing to return to the negotiating table but not before Israel agrees
to withdraw from the Golan. Jerusalem has refused to accept a Golan
withdrawal as a precondition to resumption of talks. Israel Wire

 Pentagon Keeps Closer Eye On Iraqi Military During Maneuvers

U.S. forces are monitoring Iraq's military "with particular care and
closeness" during its late summer field maneuvers, the Pentagon said
Tuesday. Air reconnaissance is being stepped up, but additional forces
are not being sent. Kenneth Bacon, spokesman for Defense Secretary
William Cohen, said the Air Force is carrying out a normal rotation of
fighters and other aircraft that monitor Iraq's skies from bases in
Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Until the exchange is complete in several days,
he said, the overlap will have extra U.S. aircraft in the area. "We have
not made any increases in our force sizes in the area," Bacon said. "We
maintain, on a daily basis, a very strong, well- trained and active
force from all services. And that's what we're doing now with just a
standard rotation." Other Pentagon officials, speaking on condition of
anonymity, said additional Air Force planes and crews have been
designated for deployment on short notice if necessary, but they said
this was a standing practice and indicates no expectation of an imminent
buildup of the U.S. warplane force in the Persian Gulf. The usual
complement of U.S. forces in the area includes 20,000 to 25,000 sailors,
soldiers, airmen and Marines. CNN

 Ukrainian Agents "Foiled Attempt On Putin's Life”

The head of Ukraine's SBU security service was quoted on Tuesday as
saying his agents foiled an attempt on the life of Russian President
Vladimir Putin last month. Leonid Derkach told Interfax-Ukraine news
agency that the would-be assassins had planned to strike in Crimea
during an informal summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States, a
grouping of former Soviet states. The report did not quote Derkach as
saying who was planning the attempt or why. Putin arrived in Crimea on
August 18 to discuss security and economic issues with other leaders
from the 12-member CIS. He cut short his visit and returned to Moscow on
the same day to attend to the Kursk nuclear submarine crisis. Derkach
said Ukrainian security officers, tipped off by several unnamed "secret
services", had detained and later expelled four people in connection
with the attempt. Russia Today
