This was first posted to the list on May 6, 1998 and I pulled it because I
thought Ann might be interested.

-----begin-----

Last week I was watching an A&E presentation on who was a candidate for
the next pope. The following is a list that they gave (some of the spelling
is off because their names weren't put up on the screen)

Carlo Maria Martini - Italian, Jesuit
Pio Laghi - Italian
Angelo Sodano - Italian
Achille Silvistrini - Italian
Godfried Danneels - Belgian
Stephen Nweke Ezeanya - Africa
Bernadine Gandet - Africa
Francis Arinze - Africa
Jean-Marie Lustiger - France

The one that I found most interesting was the last one: Jean-Marie Lustiger.
The current pope really likes him and has "stacked the deck" of the conclave
that picks the next pope, so the scoop is that he is the most likely (with
Martini) to be chosen.

There are a few especially interesting things about Lustiger. For one, he's
of Jewish descent, and his name used to be Aaron.

"The Europeans have other papabili, among them Godfried Cardinal
Danneels, 61, of Belgium. And then there is another prominent convert: Jean-
Marie Lustiger, 68, the Archbishop of Paris. Lustiger was born a Jew, the
son of Polish emigres to France (his mother would die in Auschwitz).
Abandoning his original name, Aaron, he adopted Catholicism as a teenager,
a move that hurt his parents terribly. Lustiger is a trusted confidant of John
Paul's; when he first visited the Pope, John Paul's secretary, Monsignor
Stanislaw Dziwisz, grabbed the Frenchman's arm and told him, "Remember,
you are the fruit of the prayers of the Pope. The Pope prayed long and hard
over his choice."

"Asked by TIME about his chances of succeeding John Paul, Lustiger
replies, "Me? Totally excluded. Out of the question." Lustiger fidgets silently
with his breviary in its brown leather case, then suddenly announces, "I had
a dream. I dreamed that the President of the United States was black, the
President of the ex-U.S.S.R. was a Muslim - and the Pope was Chinese.
And in my dream I asked God to let me die before that day would come.
Because if ever we had a Chinese Pope" - he clenches his fist and makes a
screw-turning gesture - "they know what administration is!" (Time, Cover:
Man of the Year, Who Will Be First Among us? by Kevin Fedarko)

---------------------

"Jean-Marie Lustiger was born on September 17, 1926 in Paris, France. His
parents were Jewish Poles who perished in the Nazi deportations. Lustiger
was spared because he was received into a Catholic family of Orleans. He
converted to Catholicism and was baptized on August 25, 1940."

---------------------------

This is the more striking when considering the recent overtures the Vatican
has been making with Israel:

"Vatican hails pact with Israel, seeks guarantees on Jersualem
Copyright 1997 by Agence France-Presse / Mon, 10 Nov 1997 7:35:46 PST

"VATICAN CITY, Nov 10 (AFP) - The Vatican on Monday hailed an accord
with Israel granting the Roman Catholic Church legal status in the Holy Land,
but said it still wanted guarantees to protect religious assets in Jerusalem."

--------------

Further down in the same article:
"Israel's occupation and annexation of east Jerusalem in 1967 has never
been recognized by the Vatican."

Another article from the same news service:
"'This is the first time that the legal status of the Roman Catholic Church
has been recognized in the Holy Land for 500 years, a foreign ministry
spokesman said."

And: "Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro Valls confirmed Monday that the
Church position remained that sovereignty over the Holy City can only be
legitimately exercised by a power or powers with 'a special statute under
international guarantee.'

"Monday's agreement, negotiated nearly 18 months ago but only approved
by the Israeli government in September, follows up on the "Fundamental
Agreement" reached between Israel and the Vatican in December 1993
which led to the formal establishment of diplomatic relations in June 1994."

--------------------

From: FYI - Israel In The News (http://www.tzemach.org/fyi) "VATICAN TO
LIGHT HANUKKIYAH: The Vatican will light a Hanukkah menorah next week
for the first time in history during a ceremony in the Vatican Gardens, Yediot
Aharonot reported. According to Catholic leaders, they will light the menorah
in honor of Israel's 50th anniversary."

--------------------

I also found this interesting:
"...there are those who definitely believe that Antichrist will be a Jew.
In tracing the rise of this view one finds that Irenaeus of the second
century seems to be the first to teach it. He based his view upon the
following points: (1) The name Antichrist is Jewish. (2) Daniel wrote
these words about Antichrist: 'Neitehr shall he regard the God of his
fathers' (Dan 11:37). (3) He is from the tribe of Dan since this tribe
is among the missing of those mentioned in Revelation 7:4-8. (4) To be
parallel to Christ he must come from Israel...There is just not enough
abundant Scripture for anyone to be dogmatic on whether Antichrist will
be Jewish or not."
(The Next Invasion From Outer Space, Reg Dunlap)

------------------

Lustiger is "noted for his Marian piety" and I can't help but make the
connection of the Roman Catholic Mary to the woman who rides the beast

--------------------

"Now, let's look at the motto St.Malachy gave to the pope after Pope JPII.
It is "De Gloria Olivae" (the glory of the olive / olive tree). It is widely
interpreted to indicate that the next pope would be of Jewish origin since
olives / olive tree were a common Roman symbol for Jedea/Palestine.
Amazingly, one of the leading potential popes is a Jew. He is Cardinal
Lustiger, the very popular Archbishop of Paris. It seems likely that he'll
be the next pope and fulfill the prophecy of St.Malachy. But in April '96,
something happened which gave the motto, "De Gloria Olive", even more
depth.

"In Italy, April 21 '96, just 2-3 days after the crucial window of April 18-19, for
the first time in 50 years, Center-left government was elected (voter turnout in
the election was whopping 82.7%!). This was a MAJOR event for Italy,
because one of the reasons Italy has had 55 governments in the last 50
years through all the political maneuvering by the Center-right was to prevent
this from happening. But what's really stunning here is that the center-left
coalition (which has the support of the former communists) that won the
general election is called... "Olive Tree"! Now we're beginning to really see
what the motto, "the glory of the olive tree", that St.Malachy gave to the next
pope refers to!" www.concentric.net/~adachi/prophecy/prophecy.html

------------------

Lustiger still considers himself a Jew (I read this but and have misplaced
the reference).

--------------------

Found this on the net and it seems pertinent:

ARAB INTIFADA HAS REACHED THE KNESSET

The Knesset Interior Committee attempted to hold a session today, at the
request of MK Michael Kleiner (Herut), but was unsuccessful. Kleiner
wished to raise a proposal that policemen appear in disguise - to ensure
their safety - when testifying before the Orr Commission of Inquiry
regarding the Israeli-Arab riots of last year, in which 13 Arabs were
killed in clashes with the police. (The Orr Commission's sessions were cut
off after only an hour today, because of lack of agreement on this
issue. It was later decided that they will testify tomorrow from behind a
screen.)

At one point in today's Knesset committee session, the chairman asked
Arab MK Abdel Malek Dahamsha to exit the hall - and the other Arab MKs,
screaming and cursing, refused to allow the Knesset orderlies to remove
him. Arab MK Muhammed Kena'an even lifted a chair to throw at MK Amnon
Cohen of Shas, and MK Ahmed Tibi threatened to hit Likud MK Ze'ev Boim.
MK Yigal Bibi (NRP) said afterwards, "The intifada has arrived in the
Knesset. Today it was a chair, tomorrow it will be rocks! The Knesset
Ethics Committee must convene immediately regarding this wild outburst,
which had cursing, chair-throwing, and almost punches. MK Kena'an wanted
to hit another Knesset Member, and two people were needed to hold him
back!"

CHRISTIANS TO ASK ARAFAT FOR PEACE

Christian residents in Beit Jala and the Bethlehem region plan to turn to the
Vatican and other Christian bodies, in an effort to have them pressure Arafat
to stop the attacks on Israel from their neighborhoods. "The shooting is
designed to escalate the violence," a local Christian source told Itim News
Agency, "and to cause deaths among the Christian population." Israel
retaliated strongly last night against the frequent shootings at Jerusalem's
Gilo neighborhood, and bombarded at least one building that had been used
to launch attacks. Many reports have been received over the past months of
Arab gunmen taking over Beit Jala houses and shooting at Israeli targets.

P.A. DOORS REVOLVING ONCE AGAIN

The Palestinian Authority has released from prison murderers who
committed their terrorist crimes only several weeks ago. IDF Chief of Staff
Lt.-Gen. Sha'ul Mofaz said yesterday that the murderers of the two
restaurant owners from Tel Aviv - Moti Dayan and Etgar Zaitouna - have been
released; the double murder occurred only four weeks ago. In addition, the
PA has also released the terrorist killers of a 16-year-old Ashkelon youth in
what was known as the internet murder, which occurred four days before
that.

Human rights group condemns Israel's 'assassination policy'

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Leo
                         Source: ABC Raw News/AP

Wed Feb 21,2001 -- Israel's targeted killings of Palestinians suspected of=

attacks on Israelis are part of a "policy of state assassinations," the hum=
an
rights groups Amnesty International said in a report released Wednesday.
The group demanded that Israel stop the practice and asked the United
States to review its weapons sales to Israel as a result of it.

The report said Amnesty field workers investigated several cases in which
Israeli forces targeted and killed Palestinian leaders, and concluded that =
the
killings were illegal and unnecessary. The report called the killings a "po=
licy
of state assassination."

Amnesty International, the London-based group that won the 1977 Nobel
Peace Prize for its human rights advocacy, called on the United States to
examine "all arms transfers to Israel" and provide guarantees that the
weapons "are not used to violate human rights." "There is a clear cause for=

concern that U.S. made weapons are being used in attacks on Palestinians,
since the U.S. is the major supplier of arms to Israel," said Curt Goering,=

deputy executive director of Amnesty International USA, which issued
Wednesday's report.

Religious Broadcasters cut ties with National Assn. of Evangelicals

                         Weekend News Today

                         Source: Religion Today

Wed Feb 21,2001 -- The board of the National Religious Broadcasters voted
80-0 on Feb. 9 to formally end its relationship with the National Associati=
on
of Evangelicals (NAE), an organization that recently began a dialogue with=

the National Council of Churches (NCC). The Christian conservative
broadcasters group has been affiliated with the NAE since 1944, according
to Karl Stoll, NRB communications director.

Last spring, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary President R. Albert
Mohler, Jr., raised concerns about the NAE's decision to drop its bylaw
prohibiting member denominations from joint membership in the NCC. "The
NAE motto has been 'cooperation without compromise,'" Mohler noted. "If
admitting NCC members to the NAE is not compromise, what is?"

Kevin Mannoia, NAE president, said, "We have no intention of merging with
the NCC or altering our statement of faith or identity as evangelicals." Th=
e
NAE was founded in 1942 as conservative Protestants sought to coalesce
around a basic evangelical program and establish an alternative to the libe=
ral
Federal Council of Churches, the precursor to the NCC. The NCC is a liberal=

consortium of 36 Protestant and Orthodox denominations.

Last year the evangelical association joined with other groups - including,=

originally, the NCC - in adopting a Christian Declaration of Marriage.
However, the NCC later removed its support for the declaration, which
affirmed marriage as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman
and opposed same-sex marriages.

Germany can play an effective role in the course of the European Union to
help the realization of a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East
region. This was expressed during the meeting between the President and
the envoy of the German Chancellor Michael Steiner. The message dealt
with ways of developing bilateral relations between Syria and Germany.

Talks dealt with the situation in the region, the importance of working for=

Mubarak: armed forces capable of defending homeland, 1967 setback will
not be repeated

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: Arabic News

Wed Feb 21,2001 -- President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt has underlined the
importance of continuing the Intifada which embodies the anger and the
feelings of the Palestinian people towards the Israeli occupation. In
statements released by the Egyptian dailies on Monday, Mubarak explained
that the Egyptian armed forces are always capable of defending the
homeland and that the defeat of 1967 will not be repeated.

The Egyptian President asserted that just and comprehensive peace based
on the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 338 and
the land for peace formula will be the guarantee to ensuring security and
stability in the Middle East. President Mubarak called for revitalizing the=

European role towards the peace process and giving it a push forward on all=

tracks.

Proposal: dump nuclear waste under Gulf

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: faith
                         Source: UPI

Wed Feb 21,2001 -- A Louisiana oilman proposed Tuesday a new solution for
disposal of the nation's high-level nuclear waste using the latest oil and =
gas
drilling technology -- bury it in salt formations 10,000 feet beneath the f=
loor of
the Gulf of Mexico. He has taken his idea to the Department of Energy,
which regulates disposal of the nation's nuclear waste, and they have shown=

interest in the concept for future study. "At the time they began investiga=
ting
methods to dispose of nuclear waste this type of technology had not even
been invented," he said. "Multilateral drilling only came about in the oil =
and
gas business in the early '90s. Its only about 10 to 15 years old."

Waterways would be used to ship the waste down the Mississippi River and
along the Atlantic coast under Coast Guard escort to the Gulf, where it wou=
ld
be lowered in special canisters through a huge pipe to the seabed and
inserted in the complex of shafts. The only current disposal site is operat=
ed
by the DOE in salt formations near Carlsbad, N.M., but another site is unde=
r
study at Yucca Mountain in Nevada. Waste will be hauled to those sites by
train and trucks over public highways, which Gardes said is more dangerous=

than his plan. "There is a tremendous opportunity here for nuclear waste
disposal," Gardes said. "We can take material, place it in canisters and pu=
t
it 10,000 feet under the surface in a formation that will be conducive to
disposal versus putting in a tunnel at 1,500 feet above known ground water.=
"

Critics have raised environmental concerns about the SET proposal and
possible prohibitions against the disposal at sea, The Dallas Morning News=

reported Tuesday. Jacqueline Johnson, a DOE spokeswoman, said the
agency would not seriously consider the proposal. "The United States is a
signee to a United Nations treaty, which prohibits ocean disposal of nuclea=
r
wastes," Johnson told The News. Gardes said the treaty prohibits disposal
at sea, such as ships dumping waste over the side, but not under the floor =
of
the ocean. He also noted that his concept is not limited to the Gulf of
Mexico, and it could be done on land. He said the Gulf was picked because
it was so remote.

Disease outbreak among pigs threatens British farmers

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: faith
                         Source: UPI

Wed Feb 21,2001 -- British farmers Wednesday faced a ban on the export of
all live animals following the discovery of the 1rst case of foot-and-mouth=

disease in Britain for 20 years, officials said Wednesday. A Ministry of
Agriculture spokesman told United Press International the ban was being
considered after as many as 28 pigs were found infected with the virus, whic=
h
strikes cattle, sheep, pigs and goats. "If a ban is decided upon we expect =
it
to take effect very quickly," the spokesman said.

Industry sources said the outbreak could have ruinous consequences for
large sections of the British agriculture and livestock industry, already h=
it by
the mad cow disease, which led to the slaughter of more than 4.5 million
head of cattle in the late 1990s. More than 80 people have died in Britain =
and
several are seriously ill after eating BSE-infected beef and contracting it=
s
human form, Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease and its variant vCJD. Britain still
bans cows that are more than 30 months old from entering the food chain. =

An outbreak of swine fever last year led to the slaughter of more than 12,0=
00
pigs and devastated exports. Chief veterinary officer Jim Scudamore warned=

a complete ban on livestock exports might be required due to the 28 pigs
now being infected with the latest virus. It it could be weeks before exper=
ts
can locate the source of the outbreak. "Everyone in the industry has been
left shattered by this," abattoir director Paul Cheale.

Sharon offers defence post to Peres: Israel radio

Wed Feb 21,2001 -- Israeli Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon has offered th=

powerful job of defence minister in a national unity government to former
Labour premier and Nobel peace laureate Shimon Peres, public radio
reported Wednesday. There was no immediate confirmation from
representatives of either Sharon or Peres. The report follows outgoing Labo=

would not take the defence portfolio in a broad-based government led by
Sharon, as he had originally agreed, and that he would be retiring from
politics.

Peres, 77, is currently regional cooperation minister in Barak's government=

He served as defence minister for three years from 1974 under then prime
minister Yitzhak Rabin. Sharon is hoping to form a national unity governmen=

Wed Feb 21,2001 -- Israel will aspire to keep the rebuilding of its special=

status and bilateral relations with the United States separate from peace
negotiations with the Palestinians, Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon said=

Wednesday. Sharon held a meeting with his political advisors Wednesday
afternoon for a preparatory meeting before the upcoming visit of U.S.
Secretary of State Colin Powell, who is set to arrive in Israel on Saturday=

night as a part of his Mideast tour.

Attending the meeting were Sharon=92s political advisor and former foreign=

ministry director-general Eitan Ben-Tsur, as well as the three emissaries
Sharon sent to the U.S., MK Moshe Arens , former U.S. ambassador
Zalman Shoval and former United Nations ambassador Dore Gold. Powell will
discuss three major issues during his visit: U.S.-Israel relations, negotia=

Dear rubyrock one,

The best authority on the subject of Homosecuality and the Bible Is God, the
best book the Bible. Some things you need to know:

1. The Flood
2. Sodom and Gomorah
3. The Bible says it is an abomination to God.
4. And the last and most important thing to remember is this "Hate the sin
and love the sinner"

In Christ,
Jim

Can anyone recommend a good book or a good web site that deals with the
issue of homosexuality and the bible, in a scholarly and "scientific"
manner.

I do not believe in homosexuality.

Dear Rubyrock,

Try this website. I know the organization and think the links should also
be useful.

http://www.transformingcong.org/index.htm

Here is a new book published by Intervarsity Press in late 2000.

Homosexuality: The Use of Scientific Research in the Church's Moral Debate by
Stanton L. Jones and Mark A. Yarhouse provides well-researched answers to
four vitally important questions:
* How prevalent is homosexuality?
* What causes homosexuality?
* Is homosexuality a psychopathology?
* Can homosexual be changed?

I hope this is helpful.

Yours in Christ,
JaneB

As an observer, I would say yes and no to Ms. Walker's comments. We
are to abide by the laws of this country - until the laws become
oppressive to Christians. Then I believe that we are to obey God
rather than man - but must be willing to peacefully suffer the
consequences our government imposes for "disobedience" of man-made
laws.

Concerning the IBT seizure, my take on this is that the IRS did not
really care about collecting the money IBT owed. In fact, most of the
$6 million IBT supposedly owed was a PENALTY from the IRS, not the
original amount owed... What the IRS was trying to do (I believe) was
to set an example of IBT, as a warning to likeminded churches (mainly
independent fundamentalist Baptists) not to "rock the boat" of federal
sovereignty like IBT did. And as far as theology, we can see from how
fundamentalist institutions have been ridiculed, stereotyped, and lied
about in the press (Bob Jones University is probably the best
example).

Back to IBT - I learned more recently that part of the reason IBT was
hassled so much, was that at one time they had been registered with
the IRS as a tax exempt nonprofit agency. It was after IBT went
through the process of revoking their nonprofit status, that their
penalties from the IRS started. Nonetheless, this precedent of a
church seizure may open the door to federal pressures on all
unregistered churches ...

God bless you all - Dave Mosher

Hidden Hopes of Being Pope

The lobbying by cardinals to become papabile, able to someday replace
John Paul II, is a delicate dance of creating high profiles and good
vibes while concealing any hint of ambition.

By RICHARD BOUDREAUX, Times Staff Writer

http://www.latimes.com/news/nation/20010221/t000015639.html

VATICAN CITY--Roman Catholic cardinals fly a lot these days and land
in the unlikeliest places.

Take Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi, archbishop of Genoa, Italy. He
strayed from his territory last month to promote ecumenical dialogue
between Catholics and Orthodox Christians in newly democratic Serbia.

Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos of Colombia, the Vatican official who
oversees the clergy, turned up in New York in October, marveling
before an assembly of Latino priests about the growing clout of
Western Hemisphere Catholics within the church.

And what was Francis Arinze, the Nigerian cardinal who handles the
Vatican's relations with Islam, doing that month in Massachusetts? He
led a well-publicized forum for theology majors and blessed the
faithful during Mass at Jesuit-run Boston College.

With Pope John Paul II ailing and nearly 81, all three men are
thought to aspire to his throne, but none will dare say so. As
members of the College of Cardinals, the exclusive club that elects
the pope from its own ranks to serve for life, they are inhibited by
a 7th century code of silence on the topic of succession.

Instead, a subtle, undeclared campaign is underway within the elite
of Catholicism's divided flock to fill what John Paul has turned into
the most visible and powerful pulpit on Earth. The field is wide
open, with no apparent favorite among the 10 or more men believed to
be jostling for the papacy.

On the lecture circuit and at Mass, in press interviews and private
meetings with fellow cardinals, they aim for high profiles, good
vibes and one-upmanship--but also the right dose of humility, to
conceal any hint of ambition.

"Those who really desire to be pope, I don't think they would be a
good pope," Cardinal Godfried Danneels of Belgium, another purported
contender, said in an interview. "That is an impossible job. Those
who see what the job is, I think they say to themselves, 'Not me,
Lord, not me.' "

Lowering his voice to a near-whisper, he added, "If your colleagues
are asking you to do it, if they think you can do it . . . you have
to respond yes."

Speculative lists of papabili, Italian for "pope-ables," have
circulated among Vaticanologists and in the media since the mid-
1990s, changing as the gossip does. The field expanded last month
when John Paul named 44 new cardinals, who are being installed today
in St. Peter's Square.

John Paul has outlasted some of the early favorites, but talk of
succession has intensified in the turn-of-millennium twilight of his
pontificate. Vatican officials no longer deny that his holiness,
shaky for years, has Parkinson's disease. Breaking a taboo, two
cardinals hinted last year that he might become the first pope since
1294 to abdicate.

Papal loyalists cringe at such speculation, sensing ill-disguised
impatience to be done with John Paul's 22-year-old reign. The pope
has warned against "rivalry and careerism" in the Vatican hierarchy
and mocked predictions of his looming death or retirement.

Noting that he has beatified Pope Pius IX, who reigned for one-third
of the 19th century, John Paul was quoted last month in the Roman
daily Il Messaggero as saying he hoped that Pius would return the
favor and "help me reach the years of his pontificate."

Still, today's creation of scarlet-clad "princes of the church," a
ritual held roughly every three years and attended by the entire
College of Cardinals, could well be John Paul's last.

If that's the case, the 265th pope will certainly be sitting in St.
Peter's Square today, somewhere in the newly expanded ranks of 184
cardinals from 67 countries.

Who could it be?

John Paul Has Named Nearly All the Electors

John Paul cannot designate a successor. But because he has appointed
125 of the 135 cardinal-electors--only those younger than 80 are
eligible to vote--the next pope is sure to be a like-minded
conservative on questions of doctrine and morals.

But painful divisions among Catholics over other issues of John
Paul's leadership are just as certain to echo inside the Sistine
Chapel when the cardinal-electors someday hold their secret conclave.
Should they pick another zealous centralizer, or a conciliator more
willing to hear dissent and give leeway to local bishops? Another
globe-trotting pastor, or a skillful CEO for the Vatican's unruly
bureaucrats? A bridge-builder to people of other faiths, or an
evangelizer with a triumphal Catholic message?

Without uttering the words "conclave" or "next pope," cardinals
debate those questions quite openly, staking out positions that
prompt others to list and judge them as papabili.

Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, for example, made a splash at a 1999
synod of European bishops by urging more "collegiality"--code for
democracy--within the church, to help it resolve contentious
questions about marriage, sexuality and the role of women in Catholic
life.

Martini, the polyglot archbishop of Milan, is a towering figure in
the church. But his long identification as the most liberal papabile
has stirred a backlash: Martini's speech "found no acceptance at all
within the synod," Cardinal Tettamanzi said in a widely reported put-
down that went unanswered.

Tettamanzi, an affable, energetic moral theologian with conservative
allies in the Vatican, has since emerged as Italy's leading papabile,
according to Italian reporters who cover the Holy See.

Not to be outflanked, Cardinal Giacomo Biffi of Bologna weighed in
last fall with the provocative idea that Italy should favor Catholic
immigrants over those of other beliefs. It played well among
cardinals uneasy with John Paul's outreach to non-Catholics but may
have hurt Biffi's already slim odds of becoming pope.

Plastering the Bookstore Shelves

To reach wider audiences, cardinals expound on television and in
print. Arinze has been a guest on "Mother Angelica Live," a Catholic
call-in show reaching 55 million homes in the United States.
Emulating the current pope, a best-selling author, wannabe successors
churn out tons of books and essays.

Ancora, a bookstore just off St. Peter's Square, carries 57 works by
Biffi, starting with "Beware the Antichrist." There are 19 by
Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn of Austria, 16 by Danneels and 44 by
Tettamanzi, including "The Prophetic Virtue of Virginity." Martini is
the most prolific, with 223.

A special assignment by John Paul can be enough to lift a cardinal to
papabile status, but not to keep him there. Tapped to open the 1999
synod, Cardinal Antonio Maria Rouco Varela of Spain is thought to
have blown his papal prospects with a gloom-and-doom speech on the
decline of faith in Europe.

Danneels raised his own stock by guiding the discussion to a more
optimistic plane.

Others become papabili with support from below. Cardinal Norberto
Rivera Carrera of Mexico City is a darling of the Legion of Christ, a
flourishing conservative congregation of priests that was founded in
Mexico and enjoys growing favor in Rome.

Rivera, 58, is one of several Third World papabili, some of them
relatively young. Their prospects depend on a scenario in which the
cardinal-electors, inspired by the freshness of the new millennium to
look far ahead, ask themselves: Isn't it time for a pope from Africa,
where the church is growing fastest, or Latin America, where nearly
half of Catholicism's 1 billion faithful now live?

Under an alternative scenario, the conclave would elect a caretaker
in his 70s to run an interim papacy, buying time to absorb and debate
John Paul's complex legacy. He might be a conciliatory Italian, wise
to the intrigues of the Curia, or Vatican bureaucracy--an option
favored by Italians who want the papacy back.

With its tiny Christian minority, Asia is not fertile ground for
would-be popes. But Francois Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan, a new cardinal
who spent 13 years in a Communist prison in his native Vietnam, is on
many lists as a respectable long shot.

Polish-born John Paul, the first non-Italian pontiff since a Dutchman
elected in 1522 became Pope Adrian VI, has not only made the College
of Cardinals bigger and more geographically diverse than ever, he has
given it an elevated advisory role that allows cardinals to meet more
often--and size one another up.

It would be unfair to judge everything cardinals say and write these
days as posturing for the next conclave. But at a pivotal time like
this, enormous weight and intent can be read into each invitation,
visit and chance encounter.

Even downtime is scrutinized for telltale signs of ambition. Cardinal
Camillo Ruini, vicar general of the Diocese of Rome, spent recent
vacations in England, Ireland and the United States studying English,
the lingua franca of recent conclaves.

'Superpower Pope' Seen as Unlikely

The United States' 11 cardinal-electors are not papabili--
Vaticanologists doubt that the church is ready for a "superpower
pope"--but they outnumber every national bloc except Italy's 24 and
are heavily courted.

"Every time cardinals meet, each of them is thinking: 'How would the
man I'm talking to be as pope? Does he understand my local church and
my local problems?' " said Father Thomas J. Reese, a New York-based
Jesuit theologian who wrote "Inside the Vatican," a guide to
contemporary Vatican politics.

Reese is part of a corps of Vaticanologists--attentive journalists,
lay Catholic leaders and Rome-based diplomats who try to discern the
secret lists of papabili taking shape in whispered conversations
among cardinals.

Marco Politi, Italy's most quoted Vaticanologist, publishes his own
hunches and waits for his Vatican informants to confirm or discredit
them. Last year, he speculated in his newspaper, Rome's La
Repubblica, that senior cardinals in the Curia were exploring a pre-
conclave alliance with younger cardinal-archbishops in Latin America.

"The next day, I got a message on my answering machine--he didn't
leave his name, but I know the voice--and he told me, 'Look, Marco, I
read what you wrote, and that's exactly what is happening.' "

After more digging, Politi identified Cuban Cardinal Jaime Lucas
Ortega y Alamino and Mexico City's Rivera as the papabili of that
alliance. The alliance is also interested, he reported, in Oscar
Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga, a highflying Honduran archbishop (with a
pilot's license) who is being elevated to cardinal today.

"It's a game of nuances, allusions--a continuous interpretation of
little signals," said Politi, emphasizing that no cardinal ever names
names to him. Vaticanologists "know 1% of what's really going on.
We're navigating in the dark," he said.

Indeed, most Vaticanologists were blindsided by Karol Wojtyla's 1978
election as John Paul II. They overlooked one obvious sign: His
extensive travels to break the Polish church's Iron Curtain isolation
brought him in contact--and made him popular--with influential
cardinals in the West.

This time Vaticanologists are more alert to flying cardinals, such as
Nigeria's Arinze, who charms audiences all over the world.

Ambitious cardinals with less star appeal have to work harder at self-
promotion, but they take care to let others sing their praises.

Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Vatican secretary of state, is the pope's
powerful right-hand man but not high on most lists of papabili. Two-
thirds of the electors are diocesan cardinals, and conventional
wisdom holds that they'd prefer a pope like them--one with pastoral
experience, not a bland career Curia official such as the 73-year-old
Sodano.

'The Holy Spirit Appoints the Pope'

But Italy's highest-ranking cardinal signaled his papal ambition a
few years ago, Vaticanologists say, by authorizing a biography
touting the "great humanity and simplicity" of his service as a
priest--all four years of it.

After becoming a cardinal in 1998, Castrillon put out word through
acolytes that he's interested in the papacy. Nobel Prize-winning
novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez elegized his compatriot as a "man who
managed two bishoprics in Colombia with the severity of a cleric at
war" and crusaded for social justice "like a poet driven by the
mystical gift of inspiration."

Like other papabili, Castrillon has a handy retort to any presumption
that he's running for pope. "In my faith, the Holy Spirit appoints
the pope," he told reporters in New York last fall. "I cannot know
what he is thinking."

This is only partly true. Cardinals gathering to elect a pontiff do,
in fact, pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance. Afterward, said Father
Richard P. McBrien, a theologian and Vaticanologist at Notre Dame
University, "it's a convenient rationalization for any choice they
make."

"But in the run-up to that decision," he added, "there will be lots
of wheeling and dealing."

SPANIARD OFFERS HIS RED HAT TO END TERRORISM

VATICAN CITY, FEB. 21, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Newly created Cardinal Francisco
Alvarez, archbishop of Toledo, aims to offer his cardinal=B4s biretta to th=
e
Blessed Virgin for an end to terrorism in Spain.

"I will offer the biretta to the Santina, without forgetting Guadalupe, to =
pray
for the reign of peace and fraternity, and the end of terrorism in Spain,"
Cardinal Alvarez told the newspaper El Mundo.

"Santina" is the Virgin of Covadonga, patroness of Asturias, where the new
cardinal was born 75 years ago. Before Mary=B4s apparitions to Juan Diego i=
n
Mexico, Guadalupe was already a shrine in Extremadura, the region from
which
many of the conquistadors and evangelizers left for the New World.

In recent days, some politicians and the media in Spain have assailed the
Church
for not having signed the Agreement on Liberties and Against Terrorism. The=

pact
was concluded between the ruling Popular Party and the opposition Spanish
Socialist Labor Party, the country=B4s two main parties.

In a statement, the executive committee of the Spanish bishops=B4 conferenc=
e
clarified Tuesday that it is not part of the Church=B4s mission to sign a
political agreement, however praiseworthy the pact might be. Likewise, the
bishops=B4 conference reiterated its condemnation of terrorism of the ETA
group,
which in recent months has unleashed a wave of tragic attacks in Spain.

VOLUNTEERS ABROAD: ARE THEIR DAYS NUMBERED?
One Opinion: "Let=B4s Leave Africa to the Africans"

ROME, FEB. 21, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The days of international volunteers goin=
g
to
developing countries may be coming to an end.

That is the surprising conclusion of some nongovernment organizations, or
NGOs,
as reported in the latest issue of the Italian magazine Volontari per lo
Sviluppo ("Volunteers for Development").

Over the past decade, the achievements of volunteers have been evaluated.
Along
with positive experiences, are many unfinished projects, the magazine says.

Many projects came to naught when volunteers from rich countries returned
home
and no one replaced them. As a result, the magazine reports, NGOs
themselves are
beginning to say: "Let=B4s leave Africa to the Africans."

Some NGOs maintain that volunteers can have more of a negative than
positive
effect, and that it would be wiser to support the endeavors of local NGOs, =
by
sending money and, above all, well-trained individuals, the magazine says.

In other words, nationals in developing countries should manage the project=
s
and
be active in shaping their own future.

FOCSIV-Volontari nel Mondo -- one of the three large NGO coordinators in
Italy
-- explained that last year it received applications from 5,000 youths who
wanted to go as volunteers to Africa, Asia or Latin America. Yet, many
organizations must often look for other volunteers, either because the
applicants lack professional skills or they suffer from a disqualifying
weakness.

Today, developing countries are not seen in the same light as 30 years ago.=

Now,
volunteers=B4 objectives are precise, and their stay abroad well defined.
Moreover, the greatest need is for qualified professionals, including docto=
rs,
agronomists, veterinarians, engineers, educators and leaders.

Some of those involved in volunteer work maintain radical positions.

Rosario Lembo, president of CIPSI, another Italian NGO coordinator,
explains:
"Often, local technicians are more prepared than our volunteers. ... It is =
time
that we place real confidence in the rural workers of these countries, and =
that
we support and appreciate local associations, sending personnel only for br=
ief
periods or when requested."

Moreover, he says, this is advisable knowing that "with the cost of one Ita=
lian
volunteer one could pay at least six local agents, and their families would=
 be
amply supported."

However, it is not always like this. Sometimes the appropriate local agent =
is
not found. Mario Gay, president of COCIS, coordinator of 34 associations,
maintains that "the greatest need is in organizational functions, programmi=
ng
and management."

Increasingly, Gay says, Western volunteers "must assume coordinating
functions
between local associations and institutions. They must deal with the
authorities, governments and church."

Agostino Mantovani, president of FOCSIV-Volontari nel Mondo, emphasizes
too that
volunteers need more than simple technical formation.

"The choice made by volunteers continues to be, above all, a life option of=
 free
solidarity," he says. "I stress =B4free,=B4 even though today expenses are
reimbursed, because [the choice] is an option for the poor."

CHURCH GOES PROACTIVE IN CHINESE PRESS

HONG KONG, FEB. 21, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The Catholic Church launched an
unprecedented initiative in China, when it published two pages of reflectio=
ns
on
the faith, laced with quotations from the Bible, in the Express Weekly,
published here in English.

According to Kevin Lai Yuk-Ching, executive secretary of the Diocesan Offic=

U.S. slams Israel on human rights

                  By Aluf Benn
                  Ha'aretz Correspondent

An unprecedented U.S. State Department attack on Israel's violations of
human rights is to be published tomorrow in Washington, just as Secretary
of State Colin Powell leaves for a Middle East tour that begins Saturday night
in Israel.

The human rights report criticizes the measures Israel took in response to
the Palestinian uprising in the territories, including assassinating those
suspected of planning terror incidents, imposing sieges on Palestinians
towns and villages, and other abuses such as damaging Palestinian
ambulances.

A chapter in the report also deals with the government's handling of
demonstrations by Arab citizens of Israel and the deaths of 13 of them in
October 2000.

Israel provided detailed responses to the State Department report, but
refused to comment on the liquidation charges, arguing they are military
actions in an armed conflict and not a matter of human rights.

On March 19 the annual session of the U.N. Human Rights Commission is
to convene in Geneva.

The Foreign Ministry expects the debate to be particularly rough on Israel,
bolstered by the State Department report and other critical reports by human
rights organizations.

Storms add little to Kinneret water line

                  By Amiram Cohen
                  Ha'aretz Energy Correspondent

The rains of the past weeks and days have done little to improve the
condition of the Kinneret, according to measurements carried out yesterday
at the lake. Following yesterday's stormy weather, the lake rose by a mere 3
centimeters to a level of minus 213.28 meters, checks revealed.

The lake is still a full meter below the level recorded at the same time last
year, with the Kinneret still short of 170 million cubic meters of water in
relation to the winter of 2000. In order to reach its upper level, the lake still
requires a total of 740 million cubic meters of water - more than the entire
country consumes over a year.

Uri Sagi, the chairman of the state water utility, Mekorot, said that barring a
dramatic improvement over the remainder of the winter season, the water
crisis would only get worse. Sagi called on the government to allow Mekorot
to take immediate action to increase the water resources at the disposal of
the state, demanding, among other measures, the establishment of a plant
in Ashdod to desalinate 50 million cubic meters of water a year.

During the course of 2001, Mekorot intends on drawing 235 million cubic
meters of water from the Kinneret, as opposed to an annual average of 380
million cubic meters.

Subject: [bprlist] PA preparing for another six months of war
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>

PA preparing for another six months of war

(BNI-FEB.22) PA Chairman Yassir Arafat is continuing international fund
raising efforts in the hope of collecting funds necessary to pay PA
employees, some of whom are actively involved in terrorist attacks against
Israel, Yediot Ahronot reported.

Quoting a senior aide to Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon, Yediot adds
that Arafat has already mapped out his escape route to Baghdad in the
event of a rebellion within the PA.

Israeli officials believe Arafat will raise sufficient funds to permit at
least another six months of warfare against Israel. It is estimated that
the PA requires 30-50 million dollars monthly to finance the ongoing
warfare and pay the approximately 140,000 PA employees.

Israeli security establishment officials report that due to the ongoing
warfare, the PA has little or no revenue from taxes within the PA. Israeli
experts also state with certainty that the international community will
continue to pump monies into the PA, despite the gross mishandling of
funds, rather than permit the PA to collapse due to fiscal insufficiency.

IRAQ ATTACK NOT SO SUCCESSFUL?
Last Friday's surprise raid against Iraq might not have been as
successful as portrayed. A glitch in the programming of software that
controlled the firing of weapons may have caused some missiles to
miss some of the 20 targets near Baghdad that pilots were trying to
hit during the evening raid, Pentagon officials told ABCNEWS.

about to release a report that will be highly critical of the
measures taken by Israel in response to the Palestinian uprising.
These developments come ahead of a visit to the region by the new US

ISRAELI IN-FIGHTING THREATENS SHARON'S UNITY BID
Israeli Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon's bid to forge a broad

parties. The rightist Likud Party leader had hoped to have a
government in place for the visit this weekend by Secretary of State
Colin Powell. But the center-left Labor Party, Israel's largest
political bloc, was thrown into turmoil by Barak's decision on
Tuesday to step down from the party leadership and retire from

PAKISTAN SAYS IT MAY PUT NUKES IN SUBS
In what appeared to be the first indication that Pakistan was ready
to deploy nuclear weapons, its navy said Thursday that it may put
nuclear missiles on its submarines. Such a move would aggravate
tension with nuclear neighbor India, which also announced its
intention to deploy nuclear armed submarines. "We are also fully
prepared for the deployment of nuclear missiles by them. We are equal
to it," India's defense ministry spokesman P.K. Bandopadhyay told The
Associated Press in New Delhi.

MOZAMBIQUE IN $30M FLOOD APPEAL
Mozambique is making a new appeal for $30m as the country faces
renewed flooding that has so far killed 41 people and forced
thousands from their homes. The appeal comes as the country is still
struggling to recover from last year's devastating flooding which
left 700 Mozambicans dead and 500,000 homeless. The authorities say
people need food, shelter and clothes. They are also asking for air
support for rescue missions and to transport supplies.

STUDY: STRICT PARENTING MAY CURB TEEN DRUG ABUSE
Teenagers who live in strict households are less likely to abuse
drugs or alcohol than those who live in "hands-off" households,
regardless of whether they are raised by one parent or two, new
research released Wednesday suggests. The research, by the National
Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, concluded that teen-agers
living in more liberal households were twice as likely to abuse drugs
as the average teen-ager. Teens with absentee parents were four times
as likely to abuse substances as children in highly
structured, "hands-on" homes, the report said.

ROBERTSON SKEPTICAL ABOUT BUSH RELIGION PLAN

about government funding religious groups that are outside the
mainstream, such as the Church of Scientology, Hare Krishnas or the
Unification Church. ``This thing could be a real Pandora's box,''
Robertson said on his ''700 Club'' broadcast.

IMAGE OF JESUS CHRIST IN AKRON BAR?
Is it a sign from above? Or just a scratch in some metal? The image
is inside the cash register dime drawer of the James Dean bar in
Akron. Some people say it's the image of Jesus Christ. Bartender
Rosalind Knaff saw it first about a month ago. "It was the face of
Jesus Christ," she said. "It was so distinct you couldn't mistake
it." Bar patron Bill Risko thinks there's a lesson behind
it. "Proves that Christ is everywhere."

Arafat prepared to flee to Baghdad

[Jerusalem Post] Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat may flee
to Baghdad with his close associates if violence in the territories
continues to escalate.

Arafat has not paid his staff for two months and Palestinian
opposition figures are gaining influence among the general population,
according to Jane's Foreign Report.

The Palestinian leader sent some of his senior advisers to Baghdad
last month, ostensibly to discuss general Iraqi support for the
Palestinians. This visit was reportedly also used to make arrangements
for a potential evacuation. One of the emmisaries was Farouk Kaddoumi,
who opposed the Oslo agreement between Israel and the Palestinians
from the start.

According to the story in Jane's Foreign Report, Arafat is prepared
for the time when Israel forbids him to land his plane at the Gaza
airport - effectively forcing him into exile.

Iraq's President Saddam Hussein has always been a firm supporter of
the Palestinian cause and of Arafat. The Palestinians, in turn,
supported Iraq during the 1991 Gulf War.

Subject: [bprlist] Jerry Golden & the sunset
From: Stafford's Mail <simmonds@freeuk.com>
Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2001 20:33:21 GMT

Shalom dear friends

Here are Jerry's latest reflections together with a beautiful picture
of tonight's sunset.

Blessings Stafford
====================================================

Jerry Golden "REPORT"
P.O. Box 591
Bet Shemesh 99100 Israel
http://jerrygolden.bizland.com

There is a lot of things to report on, the political situation here in
Israel, the violence that seem to never let up. But what I feel led
to share with you today is the sunset and a word from the Lord, I feel
that is important. But first what I feel I should share with you
concerning directions from God.

The past two days have been very serious days of prayer before God, it
is as if I have been unable to do anything but pray, even more
important to be quiet before the Holy God we serve and listen to what
He has to say concerning this day in which we live and try to
diligently to figure out.

God is saying to us, that His ways are not ours, and that we need but
to listen to His Spirit that dwells in us. For many things are about
to happen that we will not be able to understand but if we are founded
in Him, in the Spirit we will have a peace other will desire to have.
That our strength is not in our understanding, it is not by our
ability to believe or even to control but by His Spirit and we must
learn to not only listen to Him but to be obedient.

The God Who created earth and all that is in it, will do great and
mighty things but not for your survival but His Name sake. That the
time is coming that none of these things we count as important will
matter to us. He has given us His Word and we are still trying to
kill Him daily, with our knowledge and not understanding the Spirit
that lives in us.

May God forgive us for being so dumb. Shalom jerry

Now the sun set tonight in Bet Shmesh. The reason I took this picture
was, after praying and asking God to place His Angles around my son
Joel in Hebron, I walked out on the balcony and saw Angles Wings in
the sky. Such a feeling of a closeness to God I had I felt I would
try to share it with you. I hope you can see them. May the God of
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob bless you. Shalom jerry

Police email residents in crime war

by Philip Nettleton
Scotland Yard is moving into the computer age and will now email
Londoners with details of criminals operating in their neighbourhood, it
was announced today.

The initiative will send out electronic messages to residents and
businesses warning them of burglars, robbers and car thieves. A scheme,
costing only =A32,000, is being tested in the Marylebone area and if
successful will be extended to the rest of the capital.

More than 40,000 people will receive an invitation this week to join the
project and receive regular information from police about problems, and
advice on crime prevention.

At least 500 streets, including homes and businesses, will be on the
database which police hope will "revolutionise" the way people find out
about crime.

Inspector Charlie Barber said: "This is a no-lose situation. We will be
delivering cards to everybody in the area and all people have to do is
send back their email address and they will go on our database.

"We plan to send out information on hotspots for robberies, burglaries
and car crime which will warn people to be on their guard. The emails
will also contain descriptions of criminals.

"We hope it will be an incredibly quick way to reach residents and
businesses - certainly faster than putting information out in the local
paper or on posters.

"It is terribly simple but I don't know of any other force that has
tried this out. We can email a particular street or person warning them
about a problem.

"The key to fighting crime is online."

MetLife Reinforces Efforts to Protect America's Children

Child protection software and brochures available on metlife.com

FAIRFIELD, Conn.---(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 21, 2001-- MetLife Consumer
Education Center today announced plans to reinforce its support of
America's child protection efforts through Life Advice=AE, its public
outreach initiative. The 133-year-old industry giant has partnered with
Tulsa-based Imagery Concepts to offer families direct, in-home access to
the nationwide M.I.L.K. (Managing Information on Lost Kids) program, a
valuable computer tool for recovering children should a parent's worst
nightmare occur. MetLife plans to make the M.I.L.K. program available to
an estimated 11,000,000 policyholders and consumers later this year
through the company's web site: www.metlife.com.

M.I.L.K. allows families to use their PCs to store photos and
identifying information on their children in a virtual ``drawer,'' or
folder. Every six months, users receive an automatic reminder to update
this information. If a child runs away or is abducted, the folder can be
instantly retrieved and forwarded to police departments across the
country.

I agree with your note on the Ultimate Sacrifice the thing that gets me is so many good Christians dont see this at all and pour their money into the seat of the antichrist.
Another thing I wondered about is the wailing wall and Jesus said not one stone would be left standing ... Is this really a wall from the temple at all? Yet many many go visit and I think I would if I were there . Many worship this wall so to say ..

Hello Beverly,

Thank you for your response. I've been worried that my somewhat rapid-fire email might have caused some pain to some readers of this list. It seems that my fears were not well-founded.

First things first. Matthew has been home since 1315 Friday, 23rd. He's doing well, makes coo sounds and is generally happy. It's nice to have a baby who is happy to lay in his pram or cot and play with his hands or look at his mobile. Ronni asked me some time ago if I could send her an image of Matthew. I'll do this as soon as I can. If you would like to see the little man, let me know and I'll do likewise for you.

The subject of the wailing wall is interesting to me also. I see it like this. The destruction of the temple was a partial fulfillment of the coming destruction of the temple, when Satan is loosed for a little season.

This is perhaps why the temple was not completely destroyed. It is a clear proof that Jesus was not speaking only of the natural temple, but more so of the spiritual temple and the great tribulation that is in the future. To be alive for that little season is . . . shudder, going to be a real test of faith.

Thanks again for your support of Matthew. You and so many others have gained a special place in our hearts. God bless you.

In Christ
David

doing well, makes coo sounds and is generally happy. It's nice to have a
baby who is happy to lay in his pram or cot and play with his hands or look
at his mobile. Ronni asked me some time ago if I could send her an image of
Matthew. I'll do this as soon as I can. If you would like to see the little
man, let me know and I'll do likewise for you.

faith.

THURSDAY, 22 FEBRUARY 2001

ICEJ NEWS SPECIAL RELEASE: The following Proclamation was
adopted at the
Fourth International Christian Congress on Biblical Zionism,
convened in
Jerusalem from February 19th to 22nd, 2001. The Congress,
attended by
approximately 700 delegates and other participants representing
over 25
countries, was sponsored by the International Christian Embassy
Jerusalem.

P R O C L A M A T I O N of the FOURTH INTERNATIONAL CHRISTIAN
CONGRESS ON
BIBLICAL ZIONISM

I. PREAMBLE

We, the delegates to the Fourth International Christian
Congress on Biblical
Zionism, have assembled in Jerusalem on this 22nd day of
February 2001. We
have convened at the onset of a new millennium, and at a time
when Israel
and the Jewish people face many challenges, both ancient and
new. This
Congress seeks to define more fully, in the light of God's
Word, how
Christians can fulfil our biblical command to stand with, bless
and support
Israel as we enter the twenty-first century. Drawing on the
principles and
promises of Scripture, we aspire:

* To encourage the people of Israel as to the justness of
their cause and
certainty of their redemption;
* To give guidance to the Church as to her solemn spiritual
and moral
responsibilities in this hour, and
* To underscore for the world the blessed hope and distinct
warnings that
arise from Biblical Zionism.

II. DEFINITION OF BIBLICAL ZIONISM

Biblical Zionism is the firm belief that God chose the Jewish
people and
bequeathed to them as an everlasting possession the Land of
Canaan, so that
they should give to the world His Word, men of faith, the
Messiah and a
living example of what it means to follow this one true God and
experience
His faithfulness and correction. It holds that the modern
restoration of
Israel is not a political anomaly, but evidence of God's
on-going
faithfulness to His people through His covenant made with the
Patriarch
Abraham.

III. CONGRESS RESOLUTIONS

This Congress builds upon, recognizes and embraces the
Resolutions passed at
the three previous Christian Congresses on Zionism convened in
1985, 1988
and 1996, and specifically endorses the "Affirmation of
Christian Zionism"
set forth in the Proclamation adopted at the Third
International Christian
Zionist Congress.

We declare our steadfast belief in that glorious vision of
coming peace for
Israel and for the world which was first proclaimed in times
past in the
sacred writings of the Hebrew prophets and confirmed by our
Lord and His
Apostles. We consider this biblical concept of peace to be one
that has
furnished hope and shaped human history like none other,
inspiring faith and
uprightness throughout successive generations and surpassing
still any other
path to world peace yet conceived of man. It is our enduring
devotion to
this promised epoch of Messianic peace and rest that ever
governs our
approach to the present circumstances confronting Israel, the
Church and the
world (Isaiah 2:1-3).

TO ISRAEL, we speak tenderly that we have borne witness to the
tremendous
pressures exerted on you to cede portions of your divine
inheritance in
exchange for unreliable assurances of peace. We attest that
your nation has
earnestly and sincerely pursued peace with your Arab
neighbours, only to be
met with terrorism and the sword of Islam. We are fully aware
that, as a
result, many in Israel are disillusioned and weary of the
struggle over your
existence.

It is our sense that this generation of Jews is undergoing a
divine testing
of faith with regard to your people's ancient and profound
attachment to the
Land of Israel, and particularly to Jerusalem and the Temple
Mount. We urge
that Israel and the Diaspora not be intimidated by Muslim
threats meant to
coerce you into degrading or severing your deep spiritual and
historic bond
to this precious heritage, which remains central to your
promised national
redemption. We firmly believe that your cause is just and that
the Lord God,
King of the Universe, will preserve you and ultimately will
vindicate you
before all nations.

We commend Israel's exemplary record in protecting and allowing
access to
biblical sites in the Land. We urge that Israeli leaders take
immediate
action to preserve the archaeological remains of the Jewish
temples on the
Temple Mount from the wanton destruction carried out by Muslim
authorities
in recent years. This and other biblical sites are of great
importance to
Christians as well, and must be preserved from Muslim
encroachment.

We recognize that the great Aliyah lies on a biblical
foundation; therefore
we encourage Jews worldwide to continue the return to Eretz
Israel.

TO THE CHURCH, we issue the challenge to hold fast to our Great
Hope - the
coming of the Lord - in the face of ridicule, unbelief and
opposition, and
to realize that it is dependent upon the triumph of Biblical
Zionism.
Furthermore, Biblical Zionism recognises the debt that
Christians owe the
Jewish people, since we share in their spiritual blessings and
it involves
redressing this debt by demonstrating our concern for them
through deeds of
genuine love (Psalm 122:6; Matthew 25:31-46; Romans 15:27).
Christians must
take courageous action to support the return of the Jewish
people to the
Land of Israel in all its parts; to comfort and pray for them
in their
trials and adversities; and to proclaim to all men that their
election is
irrevocable, and was and is meant to bring about God's
redemptive plan for
the whole world (John 4:22; Romans 3:1-2; Romans 9:1-5; Romans
11:29).

The promised restoration of Israel is to be understood as a
two-phased
process, encompassing a restoration to the Land followed by a
restoration to
the Lord, the God of Israel (Ezekiel 36:24-28; Jeremiah
24:6-7). This is an
irreversible process, since we are promised that there will
never be another
exile (Amos 9:15; Isaiah 11:11). And while Israel has been
promised the
entire Land, we nevertheless must allow room for God to judge
the nation of
Israel in her borders, just as in biblical days, as His chosen
means of
divine correction, knowing His higher goal is to bring her to
Himself
(Ezekiel 11:10-11; Ezekiel 20:33-44; Hosea 5:14-6:3).
Regardless of
political developments within the Jewish State, we are to stand
by her,
encourage her, make her jealous by our zeal for Him and for His
Word, and
declare the Word of God to her concerning her destiny (Isaiah
62:1-12;
Romans 11:11).

The Church is commanded to honour the natural olive tree of
Israel into
which we have been grafted (Romans 11:17-18). We note that
there is a Body
of Messiah in the Land of Israel today with much to offer the
universal Body
of believers - a living testament to the Jewish roots of our
faith and to
the faithfulness of God to His promises, and a means to counter
anti-Semitism and encourage the Church in the nations to
embrace Biblical
Zionism.

Resolutions in prior Congresses have dealt extensively with the
doctrinal
error of Replacement Theology. We note the growing usage of
Liberation
Theology to build support for the cause of Palestinian
nationalism, and view
it as a belief system that misapplies the message of Scripture
in pursuit of
a humanistic form of social justice. The Bible indeed charges
Christians to
speak truth and have compassion upon all men. But God in His
mercy cannot
bless a lie, nor can He bless the pursuit of a false god. It is
inescapable
truth that much of the suffering among the Palestinian Arab
people is, first
and foremost, a product of their own callous and corrupt
leadership.
Further, the Palestinian nationalist movement has aligned
itself with a
larger Islamic agenda that is unsupported by any reasonable
interpretation
of Scripture. In contrast, the Bible puts its full weight
behind the Return
of the Jewish Exiles to Eretz Israel. Therefore, Christians
have no biblical
grounds on which to base support for Palestinian nationalism
(Jeremiah
31:10-12; Luke 21:24).

We also urge the Church to recognise that local Christian Arabs
have been
living under unbearable circumstances due to abusive Islamic
coercion and
intimidation.

We strongly condemn the deliberate Palestinian falsification of
the
historical identity of Jesus and his early Jewish followers,
and their
exploitation of His sufferings and sacrifice for temporal and
devious
political purposes. We urge Christians everywhere to refute
such
distortions, which are intended to arouse Christian
anti-Semitism.

TO THE WORLD, we assert that the Holy Scriptures clearly
foretell of a
coming time of blessed rest and peace for the whole earth. No
greater hope
has ever been instilled in the heart of mankind, as when "they
shall beat
their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning
hooks; nation
shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they
learn war any
more" (Isaiah 2:4; Micah 4:3).

The Scriptures also reveal that this age of peace will be
preceded by the
restoration of Israel, which will come in the midst of great
conflict and
distress, as the nations resist and oppose the Jewish return to
Zion. It has
not been hidden from man that ultimately God will judge the
nations for
coming against the Jewish people whom He has regathered in
Jerusalem (Joel
3). And it is only after the Lord "rebukes strong nations" for
these actions
that the promised universal peace shall prevail (Isaiah 2:4;
Micah 4:3).

Thus, we admonish all nations and peoples that those who seek
to dislodge
the Jewish people from any part of Jerusalem, to disinvest
Israel of her
bequeathed inheritance, or to divide the Land of Israel are
placing
themselves in conflict with the God of the Bible (Joel 3:1-3).
Indeed, they
shall rupture themselves and fall irreparably under the
judgment of God
(Zechariah 12:1-9). Ultimately, we affirm that the restoration
of Israel
will usher in the coming of the Messiah to the Mount of Olives,
as the
Hebrew prophet Zechariah declares (14:3-20), and bring rest to
God's people
and the entire world.

Subject: [bprlist] Israel Historical Facts
From: "Patt A."
Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2001 22:28:55 -0800 (PST)

This was forwarded to me from a newsletter I recieve called Come to Zion.Paul (editor) is a Messianic Jew in Jerusalem, and this is from one of his readers named Holly.

Historical Facts About Middle East Conflict

1. Nationhood and Jerusalem - Israel became a nation in 1312
B.C.E., two thousand years before the rise of Islam.

2. Arab refugees in Israel began identifying themselves as part of
a Palestinian people in 1967, two decades after the establishment of
the modern State of Israel.

3. Since the Jewish conquest in 1272 B.C.E. the Jews have had
dominion over the land for one thousand years with a continuous
presence in the land for the past 3,300 years.
4. The only Arab dominion since the conquest in 635 C.E. lasted no
more than 22 years.

5. For over 3,300 years, Jerusalem has been the Jewish capital.
Jerusalem has never been the capital of any Arab or Muslim entity.
Even when the Jordanians occupied Jerusalem, they never sought to
make it their capital, and Arab leaders did not come to visit.

6. Jerusalem is mentioned over 700 times in Tanach, the Jewish Holy
Scriptures. Jerusalem is not mentioned once in the Koran.

7. King David founded the city of Jerusalem. Mohammed never came to
Jerusalem.

8. Jews pray facing Jerusalem. Muslims pray with their backs toward
Jerusalem.

9. Arab and Jewish Refugees - In 1948 the Arab refugees were
encouraged to leave Israel by Arab leaders promising to purge the
land of Jews.Sixty-eight percent left without ever seeing an Israeli
soldier.

10. The Jewish refugees were forced to flee from Arab lands due to
Arab brutality, persecution and pogroms.

11. The number of Arab refugees who left Israel in 1948 is estimated
to be around 630,000. The number of Jewish refugees from Arab lands
is estimated to be the same.

12. Arab refugees were INTENTIONALLY not absorbed or integrated into
the Arab lands to which they fled, despite the vast Arab territory.
Out of the 100,000,000 refugees since World War II, theirs is the
only refugee group in the world that has never been absorbed or
integrated into their own peoples' lands. Jewish refugees were
completely absorbed into Israel, a country no larger than the state
of New Jersey.

13. The Arab - Israeli Conflict - The Arabs are represented by eight
separate nations, not including the Palestinians. There is only one
Jewish nation. The Arab nations initiated all five wars and lost.
Israel defended itself each time and won.

14. The P.L.O.'s Charter still calls for the destruction of the
State of Israel. Israel has given the Palestinians most of the West
Bank land, autonomy under the Palestinian Authority, and has supplied
them with weapons.

15. Under Jordanian rule, Jewish holy sites were desecrated and the
Jews were denied access to places of worship. Under Israeli rule, all
Muslim and Christian sites have been preserved and made accessible to
people of all faiths.

16. The U.N. Record on Israel and the Arabs - Of the 175 Security
Council resolutions passed before 1990, 97 were directed against
Israel.

17. Of the 690 General Assembly resolutions voted on before 1990,
429 were directed against Israel.

18. The U.N was silent while 58 Jerusalem Synagogues were destroyed
by the Jordanians.

19. The U.N. was silent while the Jordanians systematically
desecrated the ancient Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives.

20. The U.N. was silent while the Jordanians enforced an apartheid-
like policy of preventing Jews from visiting the Temple Mount and the
Western Wall.

These are incredible times. We have to ask what our role should be.
What will we tell our grandchildren we did when there was a turning
point in Israel's destiny, an opportunity to make a difference?

Please pray for the leadership of Israel. Pray to give them wisdom to
do the "right" thing inspired by the Holy Spirit and not the "flesh"
