Subject: [bprlist] More Mind Boggling
From: Pam
Date: Fri, 23 Feb 2001 09:13:16 -0500

Dear David:

     Very, very happy to know Matthew is coming home and it was nice to
see your name, again, with your comments regarding Beverley´s
‘mind-boggling´. I find some of your comments a bit ‘mind boggling´,
as I am sure you expected. Praise the Lord!

     In the opening paragraph of your email you say: "The body of
Christ IS the Temple of God. It is the body of Christ, the Temple of
God, that will suffer the abomination of desolation, the apostasy, the
hatred of Satan."
     I am sure the body WILL BE the body of Christ, David, but not until
after He gathers and joins all the parts of the body together, both
those who are alive, at that time, and those who are in the grave.
Until that happens the ‘body´ cannot be considered an entity, it is not
a "Temple" that can ‘suffer the abomination of desolation´, so I am at a
loss to know just what you mean by that and about the apostasy. The
hatred of Satan is a given but each Christian has the power to rebuke
Satan, in the name of Jesus Christ, and Satan must leave. The
individual Christian, therefore, does not need to suffer ‘the hatred of
Satan´. Praise the Lord!

     With respect to Israel you ask: "Is God going to give them another
opportunity besides the one that the world has before it now?"
    It would appear you do not think so but I have to wonder, why?
Romans 11 opens with the statement by Paul: "I say then, Hath God cast
away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of
Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin." Paul, I think, is speaking of the
nation of Israel and the rest of the chapter makes it clear that God has
NOT cast them off. I think it can be concluded they will be given a
final seven years, the last week of Daniel´s seventy weeks of years, in
which He will show them, and the world, that He has not cast them off.
God, I think, will give Israel, pseudo-Christians and ‘who-so-ever will´
a second chance during the 7 years and, at the end of the 7 years, I
think He will give every nation of the world a final chance before the
vials are poured out. Praise the Lord!

     The second last sentence in your email reads: "The interpretation
that leads to your mind being boggled is based on a popular and I think
erroneous interpretation of Daniel's seven weeks."
    You are referring, I assume, to Daniel 9:25. It appears obvious
this was the first seven weeks of the seventy weeks of 9:24 and it has
been concluded they are, now, ancient history. If you think that is
erroneous, David, what is your interpretation of them?

     Your closing statement is: "Jesus was the person who ceased the
need to sacrifice (as you say, he was the ULTIMATE sacrifice, the final
one) and his people, future Christians, destroyed Jerusalem and the
Temple for their abominations (sins)."
Jesus was, indeed, the ultimate sacrifice but ‘his people, future
Christians,´ did not destroy Jerusalem, as I think you know. History
proves Jerusalem was destroyed by the Roman Legions.

     Please give Diedre our love, with a hug and a kiss for the little
ones.

God bless you. Charlie Baker.

Subject: [bprlist] Man cured of Parkinson's
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>

Man cured of Parkinson's
                    By JEN KELLY
                    20feb01

A MAN with Parkinson's disease has been cured in a breakthrough that
offers hope to millions of people worldwide, it was revealed yesterday.

The disease was gone within a month, and 18 months later the patient was
still symptom-free and medication-free, despite having suffered Parkinson's
for 15 years.

The illness was reversed using cells taken from the American man's own
brain, which were treated in the laboratory then returned to his brain.

Doctors are impressed with the results, but warn that large-scale clinical
trials are needed to verify the one-off cure.

The breakthrough, which raises hope for millions of sufferers, including an
estimated 50,000 in Australia, was revealed yesterday by the Spinal Cord
Society.

The society, which helped fund the research, also revealed the treatment
secured the approval of the influential US Food and Drug Administration in
mid-2000, giving the green light for large-scale human trials.

The man was treated at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre's Neurofunctional
Surgery Centre in Los Angeles, by neurosurgeon Dr Michel Levesque.

The cure also raises hopes for treatments to reverse damage caused by
spinal cord injuries as well as stroke and epilepsy.

Spinal Cord Society of Australia president George Owen said it was
unknown when large-scale human trials would begin.

"There is still work to do, but the facts are that one man has had his own
cells put back and within a month lost all his symptoms, and he's been off
his medication for 18 months," said Mr Owen, a Victorian surgeon.

"That's an absolutely brilliant outcome. Now we need to repeat this on other
patients so it can become a mainstream treatment for Parkinson's.

"One of the downsides is this requires a brain biopsy, and that is not without
its risks. There's a 1 per cent mortality rate.

"But these people are desperate. People are dying of this disease."

The cells harvested from the patient's brain are stem cells, premature cells
which can be made to grow into any type of cell.

Scientists stimulate these stem cells to become dopamine-producing cells,
which are the brain cells destroyed in patients with Parkinson's.

Millions of these cells are grown and then returned to the patient's brain,
replacing cells destroyed by the disease and thereby reversing the illness.

The treatment must pass large clinical trials before it will be widely available.
It is hoped Australian patients could be included in trials.

Actor Michael J. Fox's much-publicised battle with Parkinson's has raised
the disease's profile and hastened the race for a cure.

Russian communist party leader in Egypt: relations are great=20=20

                         Weekend News Today=20
                         Lead: Kelly=20
                         Source: Arabic News=20

Fri Feb 23,2001 -- Speaking to the press upon arrival in Cairo Wednesday fo=
r=20
a visit at the invitation of People's Assembly Speaker Fathi Sorour, Russia=
n=20
Communist Party leader Gennady Zuganov termed Egyptian-Russian=20
relations as long-standing and special. "Egypt's standing in the Arab world=
=20
and the world, as a whole has always been great," he said. On the constant=
=20
Israeli aggression on the Palestinian people in the occupied lands, he said=
,=20
"We strongly deplore such actions," adding that the coming Israeli=20
government under Ariel Sharon caused concern to the world.=20=20

The head of the Russian Communist Party termed the latest American and=20
British strikes on Baghdad as brutal attacks. The application of UN Securit=
y=20
Council resolutions must be the concern of the whole world, and not just th=
e=20
US and Britain, he added. "We, as a Russian popular leftist bloc have=20
expressed our view on the issue, the party convened on Saturday, strongly=20
denounced the American and British attacks and called on the Russian=20
Government to work towards lifting the embargo on Iraq," he said.=20=20

Hezbollah planning world-wide attacks=20=20

                         Weekend News Today=20

Fri Feb 23,2001 -- Hezbollah is planning terrorist attacks in South America=
,=20
Europe and South East Asia, Israel Radio reported Friday. Intelligence=20
information on the planned attacks will be presented to U.S. Secretary of=20
State Colin Powell during his visit in the region this weekend.=20=20

Treaty signing paves way for European Union's growth=20=20

                         Weekend News Today=20
                         Lead: Kelly=20
                         Source: Fox News/AP=20

Fri Feb 23,2001 -- European Union foreign ministers return to Nice, France=
=20
on Monday to sign a new treaty outlining the future of their union =97 a pa=
ct=20
negotiated through five days of friction in the French Riviera resort last=
=20
December. The treaty contains reforms to allow a dozen countries to join th=
e=20
European Union, mostly from eastern Europe over the next decade. But its=20
acrimonious drafting also weakened the Franco-German alliance that has=20
driven European integration since World War II.=20=20

France and Germany see different roads ahead. Even before the Treaty of=20
Nice becomes law, their differences point to a stormy debate on the shape=20
and role of the EU as it prepares to almost double its membership from the=
=20
current 15. Led by Gerhard Schroeder, the first chancellor not to have live=
d=20
through the Nazi era, Germany is less inhibited in demanding a bigger say i=
n=20
Europe. The Schroeder effect will loom large over Monday's signing=20
ceremony.=20=20

The Treaty of Nice is the fourth rewrite of the Union's 1957 founding chart=
er in=20
the last 15 years. It sets a 2004 deadline for wrapping up the next round o=
f=20
reform talks. Germany and Italy want those talks to provide a constitution=
=20
and bill of rights for a "United States of Europe.'' France is increasingly=
 wary=20
of creating a European superstate, and Britain insists the Union remain a=20
club of independent nations. The smaller members each have their own views=
=20
on how to move forward.=20=20

IDF bisects Gaza Strip after increased attacks=20=20

                         Weekend News Today=20
                         Lead: Kelly=20
                         Source: Ha'aretz=20

Fri Feb 23,2001 -- In the wake of escalating attacks in the Gaza Strip,=20
including the firing of mortars at Jewish settlements Thursday, the IDF=20
divided the Gaza Strip into two sections Friday, preventing Palestinians fr=
om=20
travelling between the northern and southern areas of the Strip. The IDF=20
Spokesperson's Office said that the army had barred Palestinian traffic on=
=20
the road between the Karni crossing from Israel into Gaza and the isolated=
=20
settlement of Netzarim. The IDF has taken similar steps in the past.=20=20

Sharon advisor: Israel faces potential nuclear threat=20=20

                         Weekend News Today=20
                         Lead: Kelly=20
                         Source: DPA=20

Fri Feb 23,2001 -- Israel and the Mideast region are under a potential thre=
at=20
from nuclear weapons in Iraq and Iran, the chief adviser to Prime Minister-
elect Ariel Sharon said in an interview in a German newspaper Friday. The=20
short-term danger was small "but we must not forget that Iraq and Iran are=
=20
working hard on dangerous weapons," Zalman Shoval, 70, the former=20
ambassador to the United States, told the mass-circulation Bild Zeitung. He=
=20
said the two countries were working on carrier systems and nuclear=20
weapons, which represented a threat not only to Israel but to all other sta=
tes=20
in the region.=20=20

However, Israel would defend itself "very effectively" if it was attacked, =
Shoval=20
said. Shoval, who was due to hold talks with German government officials in=
=20
Berlin later Friday, said, "Germany takes first place in Europe as far as w=
e=20
are concerned. It is very important to us that the German government and th=
e=20
public become acquainted with our policies."=20=20

Israel's Military Urges Imminent Offensive=20=20

                         Weekend News Today=20
                         Lead: Kelly=20
                         Source: Middle East Newsline=20

Fri Feb 23,2001 -- Israel's military is urging Prime Minister-elect Ariel S=
haron=20
to approve plans for an offensive against the Palestinian Authority and the=
=20
Hizbullah in Lebanon. Military sources said Deputy Chief of Staff Maj. Gen.=
=20
Moshe Yaalon and several leading generals said such an offensive is=20
required to prove to the Palestinians, Arab states and Iran that Israel is=
=20
capable of defeating any military coalition. The sources said Yaalon is=20
concerned that what they term Israel's restraint policy is encouraging Iraq=
=20
and Syria to consider launching a war against the Jewish state.=20=20

IDF: Israel must get tough on Hizbullah=20=20

                         Weekend News Today=20
                         Lead: Kelly=20
                         Source: Jerusalem Post=20

Fri Feb 23,2001 -- The IDF believes it cannot continue its policy of restra=
int=20
along the Lebanon border, and is pushing to strike out at Hizbullah - even =
at=20
the risk of drawing Katyusha attacks on northern settlements. Speaking=20
yesterday after a general assessment by the IDF top brass, a senior militar=
y=20
official said the army needs to rethink its strategy in order to restore it=
s=20
deterrent power against Hizbullah. "We don't want to perpetuate an=20
impression that they can strike at us without us responding," the official=
=20
said. "We have to change the policy on the northern border... to create the=
=20
necessary deterrence."=20=20

"We need to initiate strikes at Hizbullah on Mount Dov, and not just react=
=20
when they attack," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. =
"If=20
there are attacks on civilians or soldiers [then there should be] strikes o=
n=20
targets deep in Lebanon, even at the risk of Katyushas on the settlements o=
f=20
the North." Since the IDF pulled out of Lebanon in May, there have been 10=
=20
serious incidents on Mount Dov, including the Hizbullah missile attack on a=
n=20
army patrol last week which killed Sgt. Elad Shneor. The official rejected =
the=20
assumption that Hizbullah has found the balance of striking at Israel witho=
ut=20
eliciting a strong Israeli response. "This situation must end," he said. =
=20

IDF officials have said that Damascus is giving tacit permission to Hizbull=
ah=20
to strike at army targets on Mount Dov, but barring them from escalating th=
e=20
conflict by attacking non-military targets elsewhere, which would draw seve=
re=20
retaliation. Therefore, they said, Hizbullah is trying to widen its confron=
tation=20
with Israel, gaining a foothold in the territories and even sending tourist=
s to=20
carry out attacks in Israel proper. The senior military official also warne=
d of a=20
growing Iranian influence in the territories via Hizbullah. Regarding the c=
onflict=20
with the Palestinians, the official said it appears the Palestinian Authori=
ty is=20
losing control.=20=20

Too much 'God' saves murderer from death penalty=20=20

                         Weekend News Today=20
                         Lead: Leo=20
                         Source: San Francisco Examiner=20

Fri Feb 23,2001 -- The Lord may strike sinners down, but only a jury has th=
e=20
power to sentence to death. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, affirming an=
=20
earlier decision, overturned the death penalty of Alfred Arthur Sandoval on=
=20
Wednesday. The court, sitting in San Francisco, ruled the prosecutor=20
improperly invoked the name of God and the Scriptures during the penalty=20
phase. The three judge panel, however, upheld Sandoval's conviction for fou=
r=20
murders, performed "execution style," and one attempted murder.=20=20

The ruling means that Sandoval, 41, will get life in prison for the murders=
=20
unless the state decides to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court or hold a new=
=20
death penalty trial. During the 1985 trial, David Milton, then a Los Angele=
s=20
County Deputy District Attorney, told the jury that the death penalty is=20
sanctioned, nay required, by God. "You are not playing God," he told jurors=
.=20
"You are doing what God says." Anticipating any inclination by the jurors t=
o=20
show mercy, Milton said the state's snuffing of Sandoval's life might be th=
e=20
only way to save his soul. "This might be the only opportunity to wake him=
=20
up," he said. "God will destroy the body to save the soul. Make him get=20
himself right. Let him have the opportunity to get his soul right. That's t=
he=20
only way to get his attention. You are not playing God. God ordains=20
authority."=20=20

In their ruling, the judges said Milton's "argument was both improper and=20
highly prejudicial." The argument "frustrated the purpose of the closing=20
argument, which is to explain to the jury what it has to decide and what=20
evidence is relevant to its decision." Invoking God is dangerous, the court=
=20
said, as it might induce jurors to put less weight in their decision.=20
"Delegation of the ultimate responsibility for imposing a sentence to divin=
e=20
authority undermines the jury's role in the sentencing process," the judges=
=20
wrote.=20=20
