Hi Lambert,

It's always nice to hear from you on the list. :-) While I generally agree with
much of what you've written, I must be fair to Michael Brown's argument on
this topic and share some more of what he has written with the list, lest I
misrepresent his work. Please understand that I'm not necessarily taking his
side on this issue (as I would have to study the topic in much greater depth to
do so). I'm just trying to present his viewpoint as best I can since I brought
the topic up. :-)

First, for the list's benefit, some background on the book "Let No One Deceive
You." The subtitle of the book is "Confronting the Critics of Revival." One of
Brown's points in bringing up what he calls the "Laodicean Lie" is that the
critics of revival "expect nothing better than ever-increasing darkness until the
Lord returns" partly based on the interpretation that the seven churches
represent seven Church ages. Therefore, if we are living in the "last days" any
news of true revival and repentance would be looked upon with suspicion
from the start.

As to the historical progression of the Church ages as they relate to the seven
churches, Brown writes:

"...such an interpretation is a logical impossibility. This is because in every
century, the seven so-called Church ages would have to be adjusted! In other
words, using Christians living in the year 1000 AD as an example, since these
believers felt the end of the world was near, they would have considered
*themselves* to be the Laodicean church. Thus they would have split up
these seven eras over a 1,000 year period, whereas believers today split up the
eras over a 2,000 year period. And this changes everything! In fact, the only
generation that could ever get the whole interpretation right would be the last
generation, and no one will know with *total* certainty that they are part of
that final generation until Jesus comes back." (p. 203)

Brown goes on to say that this interpretation would mean that only the last
generation would know the truth of the meaning of the seven letters to the
seven churches. This interpretation "requires that the truth of certain portions
of the Bible to be hidden from the eyes of Bible believers until the time came
for real interpretation to be revealed. Shades of cult-like esoteric knowledge
and secret revelation!" (p. 203)

I am of the opinion that the seven churches are churches chosen because each reflects a type of church congregation and doctrine. The seven churches are seven lessons to the Christian church, the body of Christ. There would have been other churches to write to, but they might not have met the criteria of being instructive.

I'm going to share some info from a flyer I received by JKI Publishing, the
same group that published "Scarlet and the Beast." I can't personally vouch
for or recommend the tapes as yet (if ever) since I haven't listened to them.
Therefore I *was* going to wait before I mentioned anything to the list about
this particular interpretation, but since we are on the topic of the seven
churches, others may find this interesting and perhaps want to explore it a bit
further.

(BTW, I trust Matthew is home and mending well.)

Secret Societies and their infiltration of the Seven Churches of
Revelation Seven 1-hour audio cassette messages by John Daniel, author
of "Scarlet and the Beast"

Call 1-800-333-5344 to order

________________________

Biblical text: Revelation 1-3

Why These Seven Churches?

The seven churches in Revelation were named after the seven cities in
Asia Minor (Turkey) where they were headquartered. First was Ephesus,
followed in order by Smyrna, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia,
and Laodicea.

Why did Jesus instruct the Apostle John to write to these seven
particular churches in this particular order? There were other churches
Christ could have chosen. South of Laodicea was Colosse. In Greece there
were three churches, Philippi, Thessalonica, and Corinth. There were
also churches at Galatia, Hierapolis, and Troas. Why these particular
seven?

Many theologians agree that these seven churches were selected by Christ
because they exemplify seven ages through which the prophetic Church has
now historically passed.

First Proof. The Greek meaning of the name of each city where the
churches were headquartered defines a peculiar characteristic that we
find in each of seven historic church periods.

Second Proof. Each church in Asia Minor was plagued with a pagan problem
peculiar to that city where it was headquartered. The pagan problem was
a mystery religion, or in our modern vernacular, a secret society. Each
church in Asia Minor reacted to these secret societies in a specific
manner. These same reactions toward secret societies can also be
recognized in seven distinct historic church periods spanning the last
2,000 years.

Third Proof. As each of the seven churches in Asia Minor was located in
a city with a peculiar characteristic and secret society, so too each
historic church period was headquartered within a country having those
same peculiar characteristics and secret societies. These countries are
Asia Minor, Rome, northern Europe, England, and America.

Fourth Proof. As did all seven church types exist simultaneously in
John's day, so too were all seven in existence throughout the church
age, with one of the seven predominant during each of the seven church
periods.

Fifth Proof. Each individual Christian will have at least one
characteristic, and be confronted by at least one pagan problem peculiar
to each of the seven churches.

John Daniel's message to you is that you understand what characteristic
best fits your spiritual walk with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,
because that characteristic is developing you for your eternal vocation
-- only if you overcome the pagan problem. Christ speaks to you and to
your eternal vocation when He says, "To him that overcometh [the pagan
problem] will I give [this particular eternal vocation]."

The seven eternal vocations are: (1) Caretaker of Paradise; (2)
Caretaker of the New Jerusalem; (3) Special companion of Christ; (4)
Kings over the nations of the New Earth; (5) Bride of Christ; (6)
Priests in the New Jerusalem; (7) Kings, ruling with Christ over all
creation.

After listening to these tapes, you will most assuredly know what you
will be doing for all eternity.

John Daniel believes that these messages to The Seven Churches of
Revelation are so vital to the Church today that he will not permit JKI
Publishing to copyright them. He wants you to have complete freedom to
duplicate them and give them to your pastors and Christian friends.

Also seven churches may have been chosen because of the inherent meaning of
the number seven. For whatever reason, I believe God has chosen the number
seven to be associated with himself as Father (seven days of creation) and
with the Bridegroom as splendidly described and adored with the number seven
in:

Rev. 1:11-20
Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou
seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in
Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira,
and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea. [12] And I
turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven
golden candlesticks; [13] And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one
like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt
about the paps with a golden girdle. [14] His head and his hairs were white
like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; [15] And
his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice
as the sound of many waters. [16] And he had in his right hand seven stars:
and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as
the sun shineth in his strength. [17] And when I saw him, I fell at his
feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not;
I am the first and the last: [18] I am he that liveth, and was dead; and,
behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of
death.
[19] Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and
the things which shall be hereafter; [20] The mystery of the seven stars
which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The
seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks
which thou sawest are the seven churches.

Christ is associated with seven candlesticks and seven stars which are then
associated with the seven churches. This is a wedding and Christ's Bride so
long named with 12 (tribes, disciples) now takes on her Bridegroom's name
and number--seven. I wonder that we, the church with all our shortcomings
and imperfections, are given the honor to have His name and number, to be
selected and conformed to Him in all His Glory! To be in the presence of
"his voice as the sound of many waters" is like being at creation when the
barren earth responded to the voice of God and brought forth life. This
first part of Revelations is a wedding announcement for all ages that
presents the perfect Bridegroom rather than proclaiming as we do today in
newspapers, the beauty and clothing of the Bride. The seven letters to the
churches can then be seen as a prenuptial agreement on the part of the
Bridegroom (recognizing faults and strengths of His Bride) and His set of
vows. The groom then sets about in the Book of Revelations to prepare a
place for His Bride. At the consummation of all things is the invitation of
the wedding couple:

Rev. 22:17
And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say,
Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the
water of life freely.

In Verse 19 we are told that this vision is past, present, and future so
that seven churches could be over time or concurrent. However my eyes are
not on the Bride, but on the groom holding the seven candlesticks. This is
the same word for candle as the seven light candlestick or menorah in the
Temple of Heb 9:2, which is also the same special "lamp" which is the Word
of God as in:

Psalm 119:105

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Our Groom stands with His Word or His Testimony to us, the Word found in the
Old Testiment and the Word found in the stars. The stars also are used to
proclaim His Glory (see Psalm 19) and He holds seven of them in His right
hand saying that His Word has been, is, and will be proclaimed in the
written word and in the stars. (see Bullinger's, 'Witness of the Stars').
Today we as a church in the west are lukewarm--but keeping Jesus first in
our mind and heart we need not be.
In Christ, Sue

Libels, lies, and false accusations against Israel and Jews are frequent,
prominent components of the Palestinian leadership's public discourse and in
the Palestinian media. Suha Arafat's accusation, made while standing next to
Hillary Clinton, that Israel was poisoning Palestinians was consistent with
standard Palestinian libels.

The quantity and intensity of these libels have increased lately with the
aim of presenting Israel and Jews as evil, treacherous enemies that pose a
mortal danger to the Palestinians, to Islam, and to all that is holy to
them. The intent of this campaign is to intensify the hostile atmosphere
toward Israel and is consistent with the Palestinian Authority's policy of
fostering hatred toward Israel.

Yasser Arafat, at the recent Davos Economic Forum, called on the
international community to protect the Palestinians from Israeli actions,
including the use of tanks, combat helicopters, and machine guns against
Palestinian children. He also asserted that Israel is using ammunition
tipped with depleted uranium and other prohibited weapons.

In a sequel to Suha Arafat's accusations, the Palestinian Authority's
newspapers reported again about gas poisonings:

"Medical sources reported yesterday evening that more than 40 residents were
injured in a strange occurrence of hysteria and nervous collapse as a result
of their inhaling poison gas, fired for the first time by the Israeli
occupation forces on defenseless residents. Medical specialists are of the
opinion that it is nerve gas, prohibited by international law. [Al Ayyam,
13 February 2000, and a similar report in Al Quds]

Two other recent Palestinian "medical" reports:

"Senior medical sources related yesterday that the occupation forces used a
new kind of lethal bullets against innocent residents. The new bullets have
sharp metal wings and they fly at great speeds." [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, 28
October 2001]

"Authoritative medical sources revealed that there is an increase in the
average number of deformed births in the Shafaa hospital in Gaza. They do
not deny the possibility that this phenomenon is associated with depleted
uranium." [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, 31 January 2001]

There is of course no basis to any of this. Not only has the Israeli Army
categorically refuted the allegations, but it is clear that these claims are
in the same category as the Palestinian libel that Israel infected
Palestinians with AIDS.

The Palestinians often issue false statements contradicting even publicly
known facts. The entire world saw the televised destruction of Joseph's Tomb
by Palestinian mobs and police. Yet the Palestinians reported the event as
follows:

"Yesterday, the City of Nablus began the rehabilitation and renovation of
the demolished parts of 'Joseph's Tomb' . It is important to note that heavy
damage was caused to the tomb and to a large number of nearby structures
during these disturbances, in the wake of the shootings by the occupation
forces which are concentrated on Mounts Grizim and Eival, and because of
their use of heavy machine guns." [Al Ayyam, 10 October 2000]

The big lie, stated consistently in reports on the continuing violence, is
the continuous portrayal of Israel as the attacker and the Palestinians as
the defenders, in news accounts of shooting incidents. They also attribute
to Israel sophisticated plots:

The permanent [Palestinian] Military Court in Hebron sentenced the
[Palestinian] officer Hassan Massalem, 55, yesterday morning to death by
firing squad . The military prosecutor accused Massalem with conspiring with
Israeli intelligence. and with firing a pistol from the Hebron neighborhood
of Al Sheikh toward Israeli positions on orders of his Israeli controllers,
in order to give the occupation soldiers a pretext for massively shelling
the residential neighborhood." [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, 12 February 2001]

The portrayal of Israel as wanting to expand to occupy all the Arab states
is a common lie. This is exemplified in a particularly venomous video clip
entitled This is How they Humiliated My Mother that began airing recently.
A teacher is depicted in the video clip with a classroom of Jewish children
wearing kippot (religious skullcaps) in front of the Israeli flag, teaching:
"The Land of Israel from the Nile to the Euphrates". [Palestinian
Television, 14 February 2001]. The video clip is shown as if were an actual
classroom in a Jewish school. The actors speak Hebrew.

The denial of Jewish history and tradition with the goal of negating Israel'
s historical right to exist, is policy within the Palestinian Authority's
formal and informal educational frameworks. In textbooks and similarly in
educational television broadcasts, the P.A.'s leadership and educators erase
the entire Jewish past, denying Jewish presence in Jerusalem and the Land of
Israel. The Palestinian go to especially great lengths to try to refute that
Jerusalem is the site of the Temple.

Dr. Suliman Alshrafaa, a Palestinian academic who hosted the religious
television program, Customs of Ramadan:

"We often hear those false claims of the Jews that their Temple Solomon's
Temple is located underneath the Al Aqsa mosque... There is a professor by
the name of Menachem Klein from Bar Ilan University, located in occupied
Palestine [Ramat Gan, adjacent to Tel Aviv - Ed note] whose specialty is
Jerusalem and argues that the false arguments according to which the Temple
is located underneath Al Aqsa are indeed deeply rooted Jewish claims, but in
truth it is envisioned that the third Temple in its entirety will descend
from heaven after the coming of the Messiah. This is the truth. Klein
argues that this is stated explicitly in Rashi's commentary Rabbi Shlomo
Yitzchak, the number one [Jewish] commentator on the Talmud on the Mishna
in Sukkah, Chapter 40, side 1 [sic]. And so it is asserted by Rav Sa'adiah
Ga'on, a native of Al Fahoum who headed the great Yeshiva in Iraq,
commentator number two. Therefore, Rabbis maintained that it is totally
incorrect that the Temple is underneath the Al Aqsa Mosque...".
[Palestinian Television, 23 December 2000]

This week Sheikh Ikrama Sabri, the PA-appointed Mufti of Jerusalem, released
a religious ruling, a "Fatwa", denying the Jewish connection to the Kotel:
"No stone of the Western Wall has any connection to Hebrew history."

Recently the Mufti responded to a viewer's question on TV as to why the Jews
pray in the direction of the Al Aqsa Mosque, with the following distortion
of Jewish tradition. He did not simply explain the truth - that the Jews are
praying in the direction of the Western Wall of the destroyed Temple upon
which the Muslims built the Mosque. Rather he stated that the Jews call the
"Western Wall" the "Wailing Wall" and then creates a bizarre fantasy for
their "wailing" :

". The Jews call this the Wailing Wall for two reasons. The first, the overt
[reason] is that they cry because they lost one of the Ten Commandments
[tablets], and they lie and claim that the Commandment [tablet] was lost in
the area around Al Aqsa. This is why religious Jews are apprehensive of
entering the Temple Mount, because of the fear that they might step on a
paving stone underneath which may be the lost commandment [tablet]. The
second reason, that is not openly stated is that the Jews cry, repent, and
remonstrate before Allah that He chose Mohammed from among the Arabs and did
not choose a [prophet] from among the Children of Israel. In Mohammed's
time the Jews thought that the final prophet would be a Jew, and they
prepared themselves to receive him and they even threatened the Arabs and
said to them that 'When the new prophet comes, we'll see what we will do to
you' and then the prophet turned up from among the Arabs and they (the
Jews) became angry and bitter that he (Mohammed) is the prophet. What they
are crying about is their protest 'Why wasn't the prophet [chosen] from
among the Children of Israel, as they had anticipated."
[Palestinian Television, 11 January 2001]

This distortion is part of the continuing attack on Jewish tradition by the
Mufti who, a few months ago, said:

"There is not a single stone in Palestine that proves the [historical]
Jewish existence [in the land]."
[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, 15 October 2000]

Prophecy and Current Events

Behold, I set thee a Watchman on the Wall" (Isaiah 62:6)

A Wake Up Call - The Winds of War

02/25/2001, Vince Aquilino

A Wake up Call! The Winds of War!

Vincent Aquilino

The Ezekiel 38 positioning is continuing as God is aligning the players on
the chessboard of the Middle East.

Iraq has indicated to Syrian President, Bashar Assad, that Iraq would be
willing to provide Syria with strategic depth, in the event of a clash with
Israel. As evidence, Iraq has twice deployed division level forces in
maneuvers along its common border with Syria and Jordan in the past
several months.

An Israeli war with Syria could be the result of Israel large scale retaliation
against the Hizbullah. Israeli Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Shaul Mofaz said
yesterday that he holds Syria and Lebanon responsible for the Hizbullah anti-
tank missile attack on an IDF patrol on the northern border last Friday.
Mofaz hinted that Israel will not put off much longer retaliating on a larger
scale. IDF Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh acknowledged that such
a retaliation is liable to lead to a widening of the conflict, including a limited
conflict with the Syrians,"

PLO is also engaging Syria in diplomatic discussion attempting contacts
with Syria designed to coordine a common front against Israel's Prime
Minister-elect Ariel Sharon's unity government.

The Biblical prophecy of Isaiah chapter 17 is crying out from over 2500 years
ago: "Behold, Damascus will cease from being a city, and it will be a ruinous
heap. The cities of Aroer are forsaken; they will be for flocks which lie down,
and no one will make them afraid. The fortress also will cease from Ephraim,
the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria; they will be as the
glory of the children of Israel," says the LORD of hosts."

Israeli deputy defense minister indicated that Saddam Hussein's threats
against Israel should not be ignored as Iraq, in spite of sanctions, as re-
armed its conventional forces. Perhaps, in what was a wake of call to
Saddam, two dozen US and British warplanes struck five Iraqi radar and
command posts north of the 33rd parallel, which had been threatening
American and British aircraft. Russia condemns US-British air raids on Iraq.
What is prophetically of interest is that it was Great Britain and the United
States that brought the attack -- the Lion and Young lion of Ezekiel 38.

Russia, of course, in response to the attack and accusing the new US
administration of George W. Bush of ignoring international humanitarian
norms. "What the American military is in the process of doing, at the
beginning of the new US administration, is a threat to international security
and the entire international community," General Leonid Ivashov told Interfax.

Russia is not just posturing with these statements. It is actions that speak
louder than words and Russia has been flexing its muscles. On Friday Feb
16,2001 Russia test-fired nuclear-capable strategic missiles from air, land
and sea on Friday, a comparatively rare demonstration of all three branches
of Russia's "nuclear triad." The navy and land-based Strategic Rocket Forces
announced their launches within minutes of each other, one of a Topol
rocket, the other of a ballistic missile fired from a submarine of the Northern
Fleet. Two hours later, the air force said a TU-95 bomber had also fired a
strategic missile. Russian strategic bombers intruded into Japanese
airspace and flew near Norwegian airspace. The flights prompted a protest
from Tokyo. Russian Il-78 tanker aircraft also have been sent to the edges of
the vast Russian Federation and have been spotted in aerial refueling of
Russian warplanes. In addition to strategic forces, Russian conventional
forces are involved, according to intelligence officials. Troops of the Russian
Border

Guards and Federal Security Service have been mobilized. Russia's military
press reported Monday that motorized rifle and airborne divisions are
participating, along with air force and air defense troops.

The Nuclear-capable Russian bombers had just two days earlier performed
unannounced exercises near Norway and Japan, forcing those countries' air
forces to scramble to respond. Japan said Russian warplanes entered its air
space, which Moscow denied. Felgengauer said the missile launches and
the earlier air tests were probably part of a single strategic exercise designed
to simulate nuclear war.

Do you have ears to hear?

Equally disconcerting was the fact that U.S. spy satellites have pinpointed
Russian tactical nuclear arms in the Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad between
Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic Sea -- contradicting Moscow's contention
that it had not transferred the battlefield

As has been discussed in past analysis, the Israeli-Turkish alliance is
critical to preventing a Middle-East War. Israel and Turkey signed a military
pact in 1996 that reversed years of frosty ties, but Turkey has begun to waver
on support to the U.S.A. as well as Israel.

Turkey is an ally of the United States as well as Israel, but Turkey's close
ties with Israel included military agreements and military cooperation such
as in the recent Air force maneuvers using F15 and F16 fighter jets. However,
Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said after talks with Yasser Arafat last
fall indicated he supported the principle of Palestinian statehood. But was
even more disturbing was that Arafat pointed out that Turkish soldiers are in
the West Bank city of Hebron assisting a Palestinian army unit.

Turkey is an important regional power and it is continuing to move toward the
Arab world. President Suleyman Demirel visited Eygypt last year with hopes
increasing economic cooperation and to consolidate already close political
ties with Cairo. King Abdullah of Jordan also said during a visit last year to
Amman that Turkey should play an important role in middle eastern peace
making: ``Changes in the region dictate that our relations with Turkey
assume a strategic dimension which we hope will set an example for Arab-
Turkish ties,'' Of particular note was Intelligence Digest's observation at that
time that " Syria cannot possibly go to war with Israel until Turkey is
neutralized." In their eyes, Turkey is the linch-pin to stability in the area.
Syria figures prominately in Biblical prophecy as Isaiah chapter 17 tells us
that at some point in the future that Damascus will be utterly destroyed:

"The burden against Damascus. "Behold, Damascus will cease from being a
city, and it will be a ruinous heap. The cities of Aroer are forsaken; they will
be for flocks which lie down, and no one will make them afraid. The fortress
also will cease from Ephraim, the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant
of Syria; they will be as the glory of the children of Israel," says the LORD of
hosts." (Isaiah 17:1-3)

The Syrian-Israeli peace talks broke off in early 1996 and relationships with
Syria continue to be strained. A Syrian peace agreement was always
contingent on Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, which has occurred,
but what has proved a stumbling block is the status of the Golan Heights --
which is critical to Israeli defenses. Syria is still insisting that the entire
Golan be turned back over to Syrian control. This is not likely to occur and
could make Syria the trigger-point that could result in a full-scale assault
against Israel.

If Israel defends itself against Syrian aggression with a nuclear strike against
Damascus, not only would this undoubtedly precipitate the Ezekiel 38
invasion of Israel, but the whole world would stand against Israel.

On Febuary 15th, 2001 the Middle East Newsline reported that Russia wants
security cooperation from Turkey as Russia wants Turkey's help in fighting
the Islamic insurgency in Chechnya. Officials said Moscow has sent a
message to Ankara that calls for increased security cooperation that would
include a joint battle against terrorism. This is a disturbing trend that has
Russia(Gog) holding out its hand to Turkey (Togarmah)! - both part of the
Israeli invasion force identified in Ezekiel 38. First they may Before invade
Chechnya, then Israel. It is important to note that Chechnya is located just
north of the Caucasus mountains in the Russian republic of Georgia,
biblically known as Magog. We know that God will draw Magog into this ill-
fated invasion of Israel by putting "hooks in their jaw". It appears that the
Chechnyian affair may prove to be one of those hooks. This means that
Russia, which already has a burgeoning military presence just 900 miles
north of Israel, may soon be joined by Turkey. The Russian bear is in
position for its final plunge south toward Israel and the riches of the Middle
East.

Russia has been negotiating with Iran, exchanging nuclear technology and
weapons for both Iran's silence in the Chechnyian affair (the Chechnyians are
Muslim) and to prevent radical Muslim agitation in the southern republics of
Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tadzhikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyztan.
Russia is becoming hopelessly entangled in Muslim affairs. Furthermore,
considering that every Arab state has expressed support for their Muslim
brothers in Chechnya, Russia's predicament becomes more and more
difficult. What price will they pay to maintain the relationship with their new-
found Muslim allies? We know from God's word that it will be their direct
involvement with and leadership of the Israeli invasion force.

Ehud Ya'ari, a Jew from a Caucasus city west of Chechnya, discusses this
entanglement in an article entitled "The Northern Middle East" ("Jerusalem
Report", June 29, 1995). He writes "The Caucasus, with Chechnya at its
heart, is the new front line between Russia and the Islamic world; the new
starting line for rising competition between Iran and Turkey; and the new
point of contact between Israel and its Muslim environment. Whatever
happens in the Caucasus will affect Moscow's stance toward Islamic powers
far beyond...Jerusalem's current interest in the region is to rescue the 30,000
Jews from the Caucasus and, beyond that, is exporting goods in a limited
capacity. Israel can only look on and watch the growing battle for influence,
which our ancestors would have seen as something on the scale of Gog and
Magog." An incredible choice of words and accurate prophetic assessment.

On Feb 17,2001, UPI reported that Russia and Iran are slated to hold military
talks in Moscow soon to discuss security issues and closer military ties
between the two countries, a senior Russian military official said Saturday.
The official agenda will also include talks on regional security, the Middle
East peace process and the situation in war-torn Afghanistan. In response to
this explanation, the Editor of Weekend News Today had this to say:
"Russia and Iran claim their expanding military ties are only for regional
security and not for directing at third parties. Of course, it's too soon to tell
the world that the reason for this great geopolitical alliance is not for peaceful
causes. They don't want the world to know their consolidation plans are
heading for a secret invasion of Israel. Not so secret though if you believe in
God's word and are familar with the Russian invasion of Israel in the book of
Ezekiel 38. Ezekiel, a prophet of God, predicts that in the final days Russia,
Iran and other allies will form a regional military alliance capable of invading
Israel. God will destroy the invasion."

So the Russian army is now in strategic proximity to the countries with
whom she will ally in the attempt to destroy Israel. To the west and
southwest of Chechnya lie Turkey and Armenia, the House of Togarmah. To
the south, en route to Israel, lie Iraq and Iran (Persia). Chechnya is also
close to Russia's Black Sea naval facilities, which would be key to quick
deployment to the south and to the west.

"Gomer and all his bands" are also part of the Israeli invasion force. Gomer
was an immediate descendant of Noah who settled north of the Black Sea
and then migrated westward into what is today Eastern Germany and
Poland. So Israel will be hemmed in by the Mediterranean on the West, on
the east by Iran and Iraq, to the north by Syria and Turkey. "Cush" (Ethiopia)
and "Put" (Libya) to the south will complete the invasion force, making Israeli
escape an impossibility.

Interestingly, Syria--though not mentioned in Ezekiel 38 and 39-- remains a
major threat to Israel. Syria is the leading Arab country in the development of
chemical weapons. They have thousands of chemical bombs and a well-
developed delivery system of Scud-B missiles and attack aircraft. She also
has recently begun to produce the longe-range Scud-C missiles, in
cooperation with Iran, North Korea and China. With these missiles, Syria can
strike every point in Israel.

Should Israel decide to launch a preemptive first strike against Syria (see
Isaiah chapter 17; Damascus is destroyed, never to be inhabited again),
Russia would be forced to retaliate on behalf of her ally. In this event,
Russia's alliance with Syria would prove to be another "hook in the jaw",
which would draw Russia into the Israeli invasion. This is especially likely
given Russia's growing ties to the Muslim nations. If that were to happen,
Israel would use all options available to defend herself--including nuclear
weapons.

Israel has openly stated that she will never be conquered again and, if faced
with annihilation, would use the "Sampson" option (nuclear weapons). "The
Jerusalem Post" reported in the June 17, 1995 issue that Israel's new and
improved Jericho missile has been deployed. The Jericho-2 missile has a
range of 930 miles and can carry a payload of 500 kg with incredible
accuracy. Considering Israel has a significant stockpile of nuclear weapons,
Israel can now reach southern Russia, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Sudan,
Ethiopia and Libya. Rest assured that this has not been overlooked by either
Russia or the radical Muslim nations, who may use it as an excuse to invade
Israel and protect their borders from this "growing Israeli threat."

In any event, if Israel is put in a position of having to defend herself against
overwhelming odds, or if she decides to launch a preemptive first strike, a
nuclear disaster could certainly ensue. If this occurs, the world would want
peace at any cost. Enter the "man of peace" (the anti-christ) and the One-
World Government, stage left.

The noose is tightening around Israel and on Feb. 15, 2001 the Middle East
Newsline reported that in preparation for a for regional war Israel plans to
increase reserve military duty. Israel plans to significantly increase reserve
military duty over the next year as part of efforts to prepare for regional war.
Military sources said reserve duty over the next year will be doubled. They
said this is a reversal of plans drafted less than a year ago that called for a
reduction of reserve duty amid hopes that a peace accord would be signed
between Israel and the Palestinians.

But the sources said that the military has dubbed 2001 as the "year of
readiness" for a war with the Palestinians and their Arab allies. They said the
military has been given hundreds of millions of dollars for the increase in
reserve duty to allow the standing army to train for war.

On Feb. 16, 2001, World Net Daily reported that the Russian Bear has
awakened and has become a major concern to intelligence experts over their
spreading of influence in Asia and the Mideast: "Russian military and
diplomatic contacts have been throughout Asia and the Middle East for the
past several months -- namely with India, China and Iran -- which has caused
increasing concern among U.S. intelligence and military analysts. Since
1998, Russia -- in a bid to regain some of its former superpower status --
began to expand contacts with old allies and rivals alike, both as a means of
heading off future Western and NATO influence and as a means of bringing in
much-needed hard currency through resumption of weapons sales. In the
past few years, for example, Russia has signed a number of "strategic
partnership" agreements with China, India and Iran that include the sale and
transfer of advanced Russian weapons systems, exchanges of military-
technical assistance and training."

The Kings of the East are also rising just as Biblical prophecy indicated.
China, which at the time of the end will march into the Middle-East with a
200 Million man army, is also starting to flex its military muscles. In fact, two
war simulations done between the USA and China shows the USA losing as
they are eventually overwhelmed due to the sheer volume of China's
weaponry and manpower. China has been moving closer to war with Taiwan
and has recently moved missiles closer to the Taiwan theatre. Chain
possesses long-range nuclear missiles that are capable of reaching the
West coast of the U.S. and they have threatened to nuke the U.S. navy in
the Taiwan straits if they get in the way of their ambitions for Taiwan and just
last year they threatened to nuke Los Angeles. China and Russia have
become allies against the United States.

The powder keg in the Middle East could ignite WWIII and the time is
running short.

Middle East Newsline, on Feb 23,2001, reported that Israel's military was
urging Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon to approve plans for an offensive
against both the Palestinian Authority and the Hizbullah in Lebanon. Military
sources said Deputy Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Moshe Yaalon and several
leading generals said such an offensive is required to prove to the
Palestinians, Arab states and Iran that Israel is capable of defeating any
military coalition. The sources said Yaalon is concerned that what they term
Israel's restraint policy is encouraging Iraq and Syria to consider launching a
war against the Jewish state.

On February 24th, war almost started in the Middle East. World Net Daily
reported that a regional war in the Mideast was on the brink of "exploding"
into reality this week, only days after U.S. and British warplanes struck an
Iraqi radar command-and-control site Feb. 16. Mideast sources close to The
DEBKAfile said on Thursday that six divisions of Iraqi troops were massed
near the Syrian border and U.S. intelligence officials had "additionally picked
up Iraqi preparations for launching long-range surface-to-surface missiles,"
the intelligence news agency reported.

The movements, which were relayed to Israeli intelligence and military
officials, were tracked by American spy satellites, the report said, prompting
the Jewish state to place its forces on high alert and warn some towns in
northern Israel to prepare for incoming missile attacks. The report said U.S.
intelligence estimates claimed that Iraqi missile forces would have been
ready to launch at Israel by 6 p.m. local time Thursday, but Mideast sources
said "a European government -- probably Britain" -- sent word to Iraqi
intelligence that if missile launch preparations continued, "Israel would not
again sit still and wait for Iraqi missiles to rain down on its towns, as it did in
the 1991 Gulf War."

DEBKAfile said Israeli air force officials were planning a pre-emptive strike
against the amassed Iraqi troops and missile launch sites, using
conventional munitions "and with the help of small neutron bombs."

Nevertheless, Iraqi forces continued preparing the missiles for launch, "taking
them up to one stage before [Iraqi President] Saddam's firing order." On Jan.
18, WorldNetDaily reported that U.S. forces based in Europe had been
placed on heightened alert on information that Iraq and other Arab forces
may be planning strikes against Israel. In addition to wars and rumors of
wars, sickness and disease are running rampant, earthquakes and volcanic
activity is increasing, and the love of most is growing cold. Clearly it is time
for all of us to get our spiritual houses in order. Read the Ezekiel 38 Study
on this web site for America's role in all this and pray Luke 21:39 daily.
America's days are numbered and there is not much time left.

As a closing thought it was the U.S.A. and Great Britain that let this latest
attack on Iraq. These two countries are the "Lions" and "the young lions
thereof" mentioned in Ezekiel 38. It is no co-incidence that the U.S.A. and
England have been drawing closer together as they see there enemies
closing in around them, but as Ezekiel indicates, when the invasion begins,
nwither country will be able to mount more then a diplomatic protest.

I would encourage you to listen to the audio Message below as you consider
your spiritual condition before it is truly too late! Watch Israel. Watch Israel's
enemies. But most importantly keep your eyes on Jesus, turn neither to the
left or the right, be aware of the wiles of the enemy that seeks to snare you
and "watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to
escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son
of Man." (Luke 21:36)

The Return of the Lord grows closer day by day. Choose this day whom you
will serve, for no man may serve two masters. You are either hot or cold and
if lukewarm, the Lord will spew you out of His mouth. Are you yearning for
His return? Are your lamps filled with the oil of the Holy Spirit as a witness to
a lost and dying world or will you be left behind only to ultimately be denied
access to the Wedding Supper of the Lamb and eternity in heaven.

Your eternal destiny hangs in the balance. Therefore, work out your own
salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will
and to do for His good pleasure. Do all things without murmuring and
disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God
without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom
you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that I may
rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.

"Put off everything that easily entangles, forgive that your Father in heaven
may forgive you, and love your neighbor as your self. "By this all will know
that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." (John 13:35)

Whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this
we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself
also to walk just as He walked. Brethren, I write no new commandment to
you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The
old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning. Again, a
new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you,
because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.
He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until
now. He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for
stumbling in him. But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in
darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has
blinded his eyes. I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven
you for His name's sake. I write to you, fathers, because you have known
Him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have
overcome the wicked one. I write to you, little children, because you have
known the Father. I have written to you, fathers, because you have known
Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because
you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome
the wicked one. Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone
loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world
- the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life - is not of the
Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it;
but he who does the will of God abides forever.

Purify yourselves daily by the reading of the Word. Jesus is returning for a
Holy and Spotless Church. ``Today is the day of salvation for many who are
perishing; their tomorrow shall not see my return in glory to judge the living
and the dead. Today is the day of their salvation." Don't delay. Time is short.
You have no guarantee that you will even see tomorrow. If you die without
receiving Jesus as your Lord and Savior, your eternal destiny is fixed.

``It is now the hour to awake from sleep, for our salvation is closer than when
we first accepted the faith.'' (Rom 13:11)

As we see the signs of His return drawing close, what manner of holy life
should we be living? Remember that Jesus is returning for a Holy and
Spotless Bride. Whether His return is today or 10 years from now is
irrelevant since eternity is only a heart beat away for any of us. So choose
this day whom you will serve, ask the Holy Spirit to search you to see if
there be any iniquity in you, and then call upon Jesus your Deliverer. He is
faithful for forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unfaithfulness.

"Watch and pray, therefore, that you would be counted worthy to escape the
judgment that is coming upon the earth and be able to stand before the Son
of Man" (Luke 21:36).

WAS THE SIX DAY WAR A MIRACLE (1 Hr)

With all the odds against them, the tiny nation of Israel and its citizen army
scored a decisive military victory in the Six-Day War against a major force.
How was this victory possible? Where did all those mysterious extra tanks
and troops come from? Was this victory foretold by ancient writings
thousands of years before the war? Did the Israelis use ancient writings to
plan and carry out the war victory? Is this war only one in a series of current
events preparing the way for the End Times?

Christians released from jail
February 22, 2001

http://www.persecution.com/news/index.cfm?action=article&newsid=91

The case against four Christians detained since October 29 on trumped-
up proselytism charges was dismissed February 11 in Rajbiraj, Nepal,
after prosecution witnesses failed to appear in court, according to
Compass Direct and VOM sources. The judge ordered the four (three
Nepali nationals and one Norwegian) to be released on February 15.

The four Christians are Trond Berg, a Norwegian national; Rev. Devi
Bhattarai, a Baptist pastor; Mr. Timothy Rai, a staffer for Campus
Crusade for Christ; and Mr. Prem Bahadur Rai, a local Christian
businessman. They were arrested October 29 in the border town of
Rajbiraj after 15 extremists began to attack Christians holding a two-
day seminar in the local Baptist church.

The ensuing fracas led to the police being called. One witness
alleged that Pastor Bhatarai was offering bribes for Hindus to
convert to Christianity. The charges were fabricated and should have
been thrown out. However, when the arraignment took place on November
1, the courtroom was besieged by extremist demonstrators, including
many bussed over the border from India. The judge gave in to the
crowd's demands and insisted the four accused Christians stay in jail
and await trial.

The baseless nature of the charges was borne out by the absence of
all the accusers when the trial was due to begin on February 11.
According to an eyewitness at the proceedings, "The magistrate stood
in frustration waiting for the witnesses to turn up. Only the
government attorney was present and disappointed that his star case
which had commenced with great fanfare and slogans was about to be
dumped in quiet disgrace."

The government attorney asked for a postponement of the hearing, but
defense lawyer Hikmat Singh objected, saying everyone had received
ample notification of the date and place. Singh also argued that
Christians have a right to assemble in their own private rooms and
conduct worship; because these Christians were doing just that, there
was no basis for claiming they created a public disturbance.

The judge wrote a four-page verdict asking for the case to be
dismissed and for the four to be released from their three-and-a-half
month incarceration.

Nepal changed from being a Hindu monarchical state to a democratic
state in the early 1990s, and a new constitution in 1990 supposedly
guaranteed each person "the freedom to profess and practice his own
religion."

Proselytizing is banned and carries a three-year jail penalty, but no
one thus far has been prosecuted. Eighty-five percent of Nepal's 24.3
million people are Hindu, although Hinduism is no longer the state
religion. In the past three years, extremist Hindu organizations from
India have set up offices in Katmandu and aggression against
Christians is on the rise.

PAKISTANI PASTOR THREATENED, CALLS FOR DIALOGUE
February 20, 2001

http://www.persecution.com/news/index.cfm?action=article&newsid=90#

Muslim religious leaders packed a courtroom in Jacobabad, Pakistan
Monday to hear initial arguments in the case against eight Christian
evangelists. Six of the eight defendants--including Pastor Yousef
Masih--were present in the courtroom.

Pastor Masih has received numerous threatening telephone calls and
Muslims in the courtroom Monday raised placards demanding that the
magistrate banish pastor Masih from the city. Pastor Masih responded
by calling on Christians and Muslims in Jacobabad to join together in
a spirit of reconciliation and brotherhood. He has asked Pakistani
Christians to "contact their Muslim friends in Jacobabad to initiate
regular dialogues for maintaining peace and harmony in the area."

Pastor Masih and the seven other defendants are charged
with "provoking public anger" and "unlawful assembly." The charges
against them came following the showing of the JESUS Film in a
Christian neighborhood in Jacobabad January 11th. After the screening
of the film, the men handed out the Christian booklet, "Who is
Jesus." Some Muslims were also in attendance during the showing of
the film and later that evening took one of the booklets to
their "Moulvis," Muslim religious leaders. The leaders mobilized
Muslims against the Christians, and forced police and city officials
to file a case against them. They claimed the film and the booklet
were against Islam.

After that, a group of radical Muslims attacked the local Baptist
church and the home of Pastor Yousef Masih. The pastor wasn't home at
the time, and his wife and one-year-old daughter were forced to hide
under the bed while the Muslims threw stones at the church gate and
the windows of the pastor's house. The mob left after 30 minutes
because the pastor was not there.

VOM representatives in Pakistan report that the atmosphere in
Jacobabad is very tense. The next hearing in the case is scheduled
for March 3rd when attorneys for both sides are expected to present
their full arguments.

Pastor Masih says he is encouraged by the "support of his brothers
and sisters in Christ." He asks that Christians everywhere pray for
him and the seven other defendants, "Pray for peace and harmonious
relations between Christians and Muslims in Pakistan."

   8. PROBLEMS IN CANADA

1. TWO TERRORIST ATTACKS, TWO WOUNDED
Two residents of Ateret - a small town in southern Samaria, between
Ofrah/Beit El and N'vei Tzuf - were wounded in two separate terrorist
attacks today. Shortly after 1 PM, Yossi (ben Masouda) Cohen - married
and
the father of four - was shot while driving between Ateret and the Bir Zeit=

Bridge. He suffered bullet wounds in the head, inflicted by Palestinians
shooting from a passing car, and his wounds are reported as serious. He
was to be operated on this afternoon. About an hour later, a woman from
Ateret was wounded in a similar attack, in the same area - just north of
Ofrah. Her wounds to her hand and legs are considered light.

2. POWELL AND SHARON MEET
U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell met last night with outgoing Prime
Minister Ehud Barak, and had breakfast this morning with Prime
Minister-elect Ariel Sharon. Following a short meeting with President
Moshe Katzav, Powell is now on his way to meet with Yasser Arafat; Arafat
is in Ramallah for the first time since he began the current mini-war.

Sharon and Powell appear to be in agreement that the Oslo process is no
longer the central issue in the Middle East, and has been replaced in large=

measure by Iraq and its dangerous weapons-buildup. Powell said, however,
that Israel's main concern should be the Palestinian front, and not
Iraq. Sharon made clear that Arafat must be made to understand that he
must stop the violence, and that Israel would not conduct talks before
that; Powell agreed. "Peace is supposed to bring security," Sharon
said. "It must be quite clear that Israel has the ability to maintain its=

security."

Also participating in the Barak-Powell meeting last night was IDF Chief of=

Staff Lt.-Gen. Sha'ul Mofaz. Powell was concerned by Mofaz's forecast that=

the Palestinian violence will only get worse. Mofaz said that Palestinians=

are sure to increase their attacks on IDF forces, as well as on Yesha
communities and roads. Terrorism by Hizbullah and others is also expected=

to be stepped up, Mofaz told Powell.

Powell was also informed by "senior diplomatic sources" in Jerusalem that
if the Hizbullah attacks on the northern border continue, Israel will have=

no choice but to react forcefully against Syrian and Lebanese targets. He=

concluded his Israeli visits today in the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial
Museum in Jerusalem.

Sharon said today that if Arafat makes a clear call for the cessation of
all Palestinian violence, and renews security cooperation with Israel, he -=

Sharon - would agree to allow goods into Gaza. Regarding the transfer of
monies from Israel to the PA, Sharon said this would occur only after the
violence has totally ended. A Palestinian source confirmed today that
Muhammad Rashid, Arafat's economic advisor, had met recently with aides
of
Sharon, on a series of economic and closure-related issues.

3. SHOVAL SUMS UP POWELL VISIT
Zalman Shoval, Sharon's diplomatic advisor, told Arutz-7 today that
Powell's visit was "successful - and this was manifest in his remarks both=

in public and private. He understands that before any talks can resume,
there must be a total cessation of violence. The new Administration
reflects a better understanding of Israel's needs than the previous, and
Powell will tell Arafat that the ball is in his court=85 We will not suffi=
ce
with nice statements in front of foreign leaders or press - statements
which have nothing behind them. We demand clear instructions from Arafat
to stop the violence, and a stop to incitement that has increased over the=

past months. We are talking about a package of concrete steps, without
which we cannot make progress neither economically nor
diplomatically." When asked what will happen if Arafat does not accede to=

these demands, Shoval said, "Well, the Palestinian people will suffer, as
they have for many years, and the responsibility will be upon him. And if=

he expects American support for his goals, he will not get it..."

4. WAR IN GAZA; NO ONE HURT
Twelve Palestinian shooting incidents were registered in Gaza last night -=

none anywhere else - yet miraculously no one was hurt. The targets
included IDF outposts on the Egypt-Israel border, south of Kisufim, near
Netzarim and Dugit, and others. IDF forces returned fire in several of the=

cases.

The IDF announced this afternoon that terrorists had attempted to
infiltrate Kibbutz Nachal Oz in the northern Gaza Strip yesterday... A
large explosive was discovered and safely detonated by an IDF sapper team
this afternoon, north of the Karni Checkpoint in Gaza... At the southern
entrance of the Shomron town of Avnei Hefetz, shots were fired at an
Israeli bus; IDF troops pursued the attackers... Shots were fired towards=

the Ofer Base, west of Ramallah...

5. PERES TO LEAD LABOR PARTY
Prospects for a national-unity government are looking up once again, after=

the Labor party practically decided today to appoint Shimon Peres its
temporary chairman. The future of such a government appeared to be in
doubt last night, following the surprise reversal by Labor Party
Secretary-General Ra'anan Cohen, who said that the internal fighting within=

Labor does not allow for its entry into such a government. Ministers Yossi=

Beilin and Shlomo Ben-Ami continue to oppose joining a unity government,
while Peres is strongly in favor. Minister Chaim Ramon, a central figure
in the internal Labor party disputes of the past three weeks, now says he
no longer opposes joining a unity government, but that he will not take
part in it. Labor now demands that MK Benny Elon (National Union) not be
named Chairman of the Knesset Law Committee. The Labor Central
Committee
will convene tomorrow to vote on the questions of joining the government
and naming Peres the party head.

The initiative to name Peres was an initiative of Labor MK Effie Oshaya,
who feels that the vacuum of leadership created by Barak's resignation is
destructive to the party and must be filled. Oshaya's idea was based on
the confidence that likely candidates for the party leadership such as
Avraham Burg, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, and Chaim Ramon would agree to this
arrangement - on condition that Peres guarantee that he would not use his
short stint as a springboard from which to launch a run for permanent party=

chairman. Meanwhile, tensions between Burg and Ramon have surfaced;
the
two are good friends who said in the past that they would never run against=

each other. Now, however, the promise appears to have been forgotten, and=

harsh words have been exchanged between their two camps.

6. SHARON MEETS WITH CHIEF RABBIS
Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon paid a visit to the offices of Israel's
Chief Rabbis today, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau and Rabbi Eliyahu
Bakshi-Doron. Rabbi Lau said that they discussed three points: "First,
the strengthening of united and Israeli Jerusalem's status, as well as
those of the Temple Mount and the holy sites - especially in light of the
Moslem mufti's unfounded claims that the Western Wall is not
Jewish... Secondly, the issue of unity within our society... Third, a
stronger emphasis on the education to Jewish values - I'm not talking about=

observance and 'repentance,' but rather more knowledge..."

7. P.A. ARRESTS JEW
PA security forces are holding a Jewish man - Dr. David Marcea, a former
resident of Elon Moreh - on suspicion that he was involved in Israel's
killing of a leading Hamas terrorist last week in Shechem. Dr. Marcea, 50,=

has been living in Shechem with his mother, who is married to an Arab. His=

half-brother and brother-in-law, an Israeli-Arab from Jaffa, were also
arrested by the PA.

8. PROBLEMS IN CANADA
A rise in anti-Semitic incidents in Canada has been registered since the
beginning of the Rosh HaShanah Arab Assault. Although the rise was only
5%
nationwide, in Montreal the number of such incidents rose from 37 in 1999
to 71 last year.

**************************

1. Terror attacks linked to Goldstein massacre anniversary
(BNI-FEB.25) Sources within the PA explain that the general strike called
on Sunday throughout PA areas, as well as the two shooting attacks in
Samaria, are directly linked to the 1994 Killing of 29 Moslem worshipers
in Hebron by Dr. Baruch Goldstein, a resident of Hebron prior to his death.

Goldstein opened fire at Islamic worshipers in the Cave of the Patriarchs,
killing 29 before he was killed by the mob after his weapon jammed.

                                ++++
2. Terror victim in serious condition in Hadassah trauma unit
(BNI-FEB.25-4:00pm) The Ateret resident who was shot in his head in a
drive-by shooting attack early Sunday afternoon near the Bir Zeit Bridge,
is reported in serious condition in the trauma unit of Jerusalem=92s
Hadassah Hospital in Ein Kerem.

According to the hospital=92s deputy director, Dr. Shmuel Shapira, the
victim, whose name has not yet been cleared for publication, is undergoing
emergency CAT scans and will most likely enter surgery for wounds to his
head and neck. Shapira added it was too soon to know if the wounds are
from one or multiple bullets. He added that the victim is listed in
serious condition and it was to soon to state with certainty that he was
out of life-threatening danger.

                                ++++
3. Second terror victim injured by shrapnel
(BNI-FEB.25) A female motorist, injured in a shooting attack near Ofra in
Samaria, not far from the earlier attack near the Bir Zeit Bridge, was
injured in her legs and arm with shrapnel. The name of the victim, a
resident of Ateret, is not cleared for publication at this time. She was
transported to the emergency room of Jerusalem=92s Hadassah Hospital on
Mount Scopus.

                                ++++
4. Bir Nabala resident admits to luring terror victim via Internet
(BNI-FEB.25) Amana Jawad Mona Najar, 21, a resident of Bir Nabala,
confessed to Israeli authorities to luring terror victim, 16-year-old Ofir
Nahum, who was killed near P=92sagot on January 17, 2001.

According to information provided by the suspect during her interrogation,
she participated in what she thought was a plot to kidnap the Ashkelon
teenager but did not intend to kill him. When the unsuspecting youth
arrived at the rendezvous location, men got out of a waiting car and
gunned him down with automatic weapons fire. The body was then taken to
the nearby PA autonomous city of Ramallah.

According to Israel Radio reports, the terrorists responsible for the
attack are senior officials in Yassir Arafat=92s Tanzim force. It was also
learned the suspect was in contact with more than one Israeli on the
Internet. She claims she planned to kidnap one and then publish the event
to the world, drawing attention to the plight of youths living in PA areas
being persecuted by Israel.

                                ++++
5. Excerpts from statements by PM-elect Sharon and Secretary of State
Powell
(BNI-FEB.25) Following are excerpts from remarks made by Prime
Minister-elect Ariel Sharon and US Secretary of State Colin Powell
following their meeting on Sunday, February 25, 2001, in Jerusalem.

PM-Elect Ariel Sharon: I conducted today a meeting with Secretary of State
General Colin Powell. We discussed both bilateral as well as regional and
international issues that are important to our two countries and which are
related to maintaining regional stability. I presented to Secretary Powell
my commitment and plans to achieve security and peace. I stressed the
point that the Palestinian Authority must take immediate action to stop
acts of terror and violence.

I have outlined to General Powell the steps I will take if calm is
restored in order to ease the economic conditions of the Palestinian
population in the Palestinian Authority territories. As the Prime
Minister, I will conduct negotiations with the Palestinian Authority
following the cessation of hostilities.

I look forward to continue close cooperation in the near future with the
United States, and particularly with Secretary of State Gen. Colin Powell.
Thank you.

Sec'y Powell: I'm very pleased to be back in Israel and to have the
opportunity to meet and consult with Prime Minister-elect Sharon and last
night with Prime Minister Barak, and I welcome the statement that the
prime minister-elect has just made.

This is a time of democratic transition in Israel. But I want the people
of Israel to know that the relationship between the United States and
Israel is unbreakable and has been for so many years. America's
commitment
to the security of Israel is rock-solid, and will remain so under the Bush
administration.

We look forward to working with the new government to keep this
relationship strong and advance the prospects for stability in the region.
Toward that end the United States continues to support direct negotiations
between Israel and the Palestinian Authority based on UN Resolution 242
and 338.

Our immediate goal is to encourage both sides to alter the current
situation. There needs desperately to be a restoration of confidence,
coordination, and cooperation between the parties. Of course, the United
States cannot want peace more than the parties themselves, and we cannot
make for them the hard decisions that peace will require. But we will be
there to help, we will be engaged. President Bush intends to play a
leadership role, and that is one reason why I've made this the first trip
as Secretary of State to this part of the world.

Prime Minister Sharon and I discussed the recent escalation of violence in
the region, and the steps that can be taken to help create a better
environment for all. Later today I will talk with Chairman Arafat about
the steps that Palestinians can take to halt the violence and resume
security coordination.

I and so many, many people around the world have been profoundly troubled
by the violence over the past six months. To see so many lives torn by
conflict only underscores the imperative of bringing a swift end to the
cycle of provocation and reaction. The people of Israel have a right to
live within internationally recognized borders in security and peace with
all their neighbors.

It is my profound hope that we can bring the violence and suffering to an
end so that Israelis, Palestinians, and others throughout the region might
one day live side by side in peace and prosperity.

Q: (inaudible)

PM-Elect Sharon: I would like to emphasize that the Israeli citizens have
the full right to live quiet, normal lives. We live in this country, tiny
small country, the only democratic country in the region, that is the only
place what the Jewish people have the right and the capabilities to defend
themselves by themselves, and that is something that they have to
preserve. It should be very clear that there must be a cessation of
hostilities - that should be very, very clear. I will conduct negotiations
with the Palestinian Authority when we reach the point that the area will
be calm.

As to the steps in order to ease the conditions of the Palestinians, there
are certain steps that Chairman Arafat has to take. I talked about that
with the Secretary, and I am sure that when the Secretary will meet Arafat
he will give them the message. One thing will be clear - Israel will not
be negotiating under pressure of terror and violence.

Sec'y Powell: I was quite disturbed at the briefing I got from the head of
the IDF, the chief of the IDF last night. The level of violence has been
escalating and it has many different pieces to it, whether it's sniper
fire, mortar fire. It is a very dangerous situation, and I think as the
Prime Minister-elect said, we all have to work hard, every side, both
sides, to bring the violence under control, to get out of this terrible
spiral of increasing violence where we have violence, counter-violence,
provocation, counter-provocation. This is the time for all leaders in the
region to do everything possible to control passions, to speak out against
activities that lend themselves to incitement of passions. I have had this
conversation with the Prime Minister-elect, and I look forward to a
similar conversation with Chairman Arafat later in the day.

This is the time to bring calm to the region, this is the time to begin
security coordination again, this is the time to do everything to control
the passions. This is the time to give the prime minister elect the
opportunity to form his government and then to bring that government into
office and then listen to what proposals he has for moving the
negotiations forward in light of what the security situation is when his
government takes office. And so I would not, at this point, pre-judge what
positions he might formally present as Prime Minister.

What I think we all agreed on in our earlier meeting is that once calm is
restored, once there is economic activity again, once security
coordination has begun again, he is committed to negotiations. He
understands that at the end of the day, negotiations is the answer to find
a peace that will satisfy all the peoples of the region and allow them to
live in harmony with their neighbors.

Question: How do you see the role of Israel in your new policy towards
Iraq, and maybe more specific, can Israel help or maybe Israel is an
obstacle in your way of rebuilding this anti-Saddam coalition that you are
trying to build in this trip.

Sec'y Powell: Saddam Hussein is a threat to the Arabs of the region as
well as to Israel. What I am doing on this trip is trying to reinforce
that message and to reinforce the actions of the coalition to keep him
contained and in check until he complies with all the UN resolutions that
he is obliged to comply with. Obviously, I have had discussions with my
Israeli colleagues on this, but at the moment I am not asking for any
assistance or help from Israel. I am anxious for Prime Minister
Barak and Prime Minister-elect Sharon to spend all their energy and time
dealing with the situation that they have in their hands right now.

1. Report: Iraq has nuclear capability
(BNI-FEB.25) According to a story in today=92s London Sunday Times
newspaper, Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein carried out a successful nuclear
test before the 1991 Operation Desert Storm and now possesses a small
nuclear stockpile.

According to the report, the nuclear test was carried out in 1989
southwest of Baghdad and it was equivalent to the blast dropped over
Hiroshima Japan by the US. Iraq obtained the uranium from South Africa via
Brazil.

The London Times report stated the information was confirmed by a one-time
aide to Saddam=92s son, Uday.

                                        ++++
2. Attacks continue in Gush Shilo area
(BNI-FEB.25) At this time, there are reports of heavy stone-throwing
attacks against Israeli motorists traveling on Route 60, north of Eli in
the Gush Shilo area of Samaria, from the Arab villages of Luban
el-Sharqiya and Issawiya.

IDF forces on the scene report that at least one Israeli vehicle was also
targeted by gunfire.

There are no reported casualties.

                                ++++
3. Sharon indicates willingness to relax economic sanctions
(BNI-FEB.25) Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon on Sunday sent a message
to
PA Chairman Yassir Arafat via visiting US Secretary of State Colin Powell
=96 indicating Israel=92s willingness to relax the economic sanctions impos=
ed
on the PA.

Sharon is calling upon the PA leader to address his residents, in Arabic,
making an unequivocal statement and plea for an end to terror attacks
against Israelis. Sharon indicated that if Arafat were willing to comply
with the request, Israel would relax sanctions blocking the import of
goods to PA autonomous areas.

Sharon added that funds would be transferred to the PA by Israel only
after a total cessation of daily violence and terror attacks.

In a press conference in the Jerusalem King David Hotel, the prime
minister-elect made it clear that his administration would not enter into
any negotiations with Arafat as long as violence and attacks continued. He
added that as soon as Israel saw clear signs that Arafat was truly working
towards bringing an end to the violence, he would be ready to arrange a
meeting between the two.

Addressing the same forum, US Secretary of State Colin Powell added he
was
=93quite disturbed=94 following the briefing from IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Ge=
n.
Shaul Mofaz on Saturday night, realizing the level of violence was
escalating to include sniper fire and mortar fire, creating a =93very
dangerous situation.=94

Powell stated both sides had to work hard to bring an end to the =93spiral
of violence=94 which included =93violence and counter violence and provocat=
ion
and counter provocation=94.

While meeting in the PA autonomous city of Ramallah, Powell demanded
that
Israel lift the economic sanctions that were imposed in the hope of
pressuring PA Chairman Arafat to bring an end to the warfare.

Addressing the forum in the presence of the visiting secretary of state,
Arafat stated that no government of Israel had the right to void any
agreements signed by previous administrations, sending a clear message to
Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon.

Powell told both sides that the Bush administration would be willing to
provide assistance but unlike the previous Clinton administration, the
White House would leave the negotiations to both sides and not become
involved.

                                ++++
4. Ben-Ami says White House must remain involved
(BNI-FEB.25) Outgoing Minister of Foreign Affairs Shlomo Ben-Ami stated
that the White House must remain involved in efforts to make peace between
Israel and the PA, and would not be able to remain outside of the
negotiations.

Ben-Ami=92s remarks come following statements by visiting US Secretary of
State Colin Powell who stated America was not planning to become involved
in talks between Israel and the PA, but was willing to offer assistance to
both parties. Powell=92s statements were clear, the Bush administration was
not making peace-making efforts between Israel and the PA the same
high-level US priority, as did the former administration of President Bill
Clinton.

Ben-Ami stated that during these critical times, the US does not have the
luxury of taking a back seat since the area was heading for an explosion
if an agreement was not achieved in the near future.

                                ++++
5. PM-elect meets with chief rabbis
(BNI-FEB.25) In a meeting with Israel=92s Chief Rabbis Eliyahu Bakshi-Doron
and Yisrael Meir Lau, Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon made his position
clear, explaining he would be willing to remove economic sanctions imposed
on the PA if Yassir Arafat took the necessary steps to bring an end to the
daily warfare and attacks.

6. Stabbing attack in Holon
(BNI-FEB.25) A male was stabbed and moderately wounded in a Sunday
night
stabbing attack in Holon. It appears the victim who was transported to
Wolfson Hospital knows the assailant.

Police report the motive for the attack remains unclear at this time. An
investigation is underway.

7. Yesha =91safe road=92 map now on sale
(BNI-FEB.25) In cooperation with the government and Israel Defense Force,
The Survey of Israel map company has just completed its map of =91safe
routes=92 throughout Yesha areas, accurate as of February 1, 2001.

The new maps are intended to avoid Israeli mistakenly enter areas under
total PA control. The maps also carry other important information and
critical data, such as the locations of emergency medical facilities, IDF
checkpoint locations and more helpful information.

Persons wishing to purchase the map may do so. The cost is NIS 27 plus
NIS
8 for delivery.

For additional information, one may contact the publishers of the map at

8. Anti American protests continue throughout the PA
(BNI-FEB.25) Coinciding with the first regional visit of US Secretary of
State Colin Powell, anti-American demonstrations were held throughout PA
autonomous areas, including the burning of US flags and pictures of
President George W. Bush.

Opposition to the new US administration continues to increase among PA
residents with the recent US bombing attacks against Iraqi targets.

Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon in a meeting on Sunday with Powell
stated he did not believe the new US administration would succeed in
ongoing efforts to enlist an Arab alliance against Iraqi President Saddam
Hussein.

                                ++++

9. Update on condition of terror victims
(BNI-FEB.25) Yossi Cohen, a resident of the community of Ateret, has come
out of emergency surgery and is reported in serious condition. Doctors at
Jerusalem=92s Hadassah Hospital in Ein Kerem add that it does not appear
that the victim sustained permanent neurological damage from the gunshot
wound to his head although a final determination may only be made at a
later date in Cohen=92s recovery process.

According to first responders to the scene of the attack near the Bir Zeit
Bridge in the Benjamin Regional Council district of Samaria, Cohen was
most fortunate to be alive with at least twenty bullets fired from the
passing terrorist vehicle striking his van.

BNI has also learned that Cohen=92s wife was injured in a terrorist attack
in the same are about three years earlier.

The victim of the second shooting attack, near Ofra, in the Benjamin
Regional Council as well, is another Ateret resident, Rachel Levine, 42.
She was shot in her left hand and sustained shrapnel injuries to both
legs. She remains in light condition in Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus
in Jerusalem.

Levine was fired upon from a stationary ambush position and not from
moving vehicle as first believed. The Benjamin District IDF Battalion
Commander, Colonel Ilan Paz, reported the terrorist fled to the nearby
Arab village of Yabrud.

IDF officials report that during last night, there were twelve shooting
attacks in areas throughout Yesha.

                                ++++
10. Heavy stone-throwing attacks in Gush Shilo region of Samaria
(BNI-FEB.25) Heavy stone-throwing attacks were reported on Sunday from
the
Arab village of Sinjel, in the Gush Shilo area of Samaria. There were no
reported injuries from attacks but Route 60, the area=92s main north/south
vehicular route, was closed by the IDF for a period of time as a result of
the attacks against Israeli motorists.

                                ++++
11. Ministers opting for Peres to fill defense post
(BNI-FEB.25) Labor Party cabinet ministers on Sunday evening announced
that at Monday=92s meeting of the party=92s 1,700-member Central Committee,
they would be supporting Shimon Peres=92 bid to fill the defense ministry
portfolio.

Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon has indicated the Likud would not be
willing to relinquish the finance portfolio and remains firm in his
position that Labor accept the defense portfolio. Former Prime Minister
Shimon Peres has indicated his willingness to accept the post but may not
do so without the party support, one of the issues that will most likely
occupy party leaders at Monday=92s meeting.

                                ++++
12. Jews barred from the Temple Mount
(BNI-FEB.25) Ten Jewish activists were on Sunday afternoon barred from
entering the Temple Mount complex by Israel Police. Following a brief
scuffle and exchange of words between the group and the ten, three were
detained.

The group explained they would continue their struggle for the right of
Jews to pray on the Mount, the holiest site to the Jewish people, the site
of the First and Second Temples.

The Mount was liberated from Jordanian occupation by Israeli forces in the
June 1967 Six Day War.

                                ++++
13. Herut Party MK calls for retaking areas =93A=94
(BNI-FEB.25) Right-wing opposition Member of Knesset Michael Kleiner of
the one-man Herut Party has called upon the IDF to retake areas =93A=94,
namely those areas under total PA control.

Following the continued increase in terrorist attacks and daily warfare
against IDF forces and Israeli civilians, emanating from areas =93A=94,
Kleiner stated there would be no alternative to retaking the areas given
away to the PA in order to restore law and order.

                                ++++

14. Jewish MD arrested by PA for alleged participation in assassination
(BNI-FEB.25) A former resident of the northern Samaria Jewish community of
Elon Moreh, a physician by profession, was arrested by PA security forces
on suspicion of working with Israeli officials in the recent assassination
of a Hamas terror organization fugitive. The suspect, who was living in
the PA autonomous city of Nablus with his stepbrother, an Arab, was taken
into custody together with the stepbrother.

According to Israeli authorities, the 50-year-old doctor, David Marcea,
suffers from chronic emotional problems and his mental state is unstable. =

                                ++++
15. IDF soldier sentenced to 49 days in lockup for shooting in Gaza
(BNI-FEB.25) An IDF soldier who was sentenced to 49 days in jail by his
commanding officer became the first soldier sent to prison for firing at
rioters since the Sept. 29, 2000 start of the PA orchestrated Al Aqsa
Intifada.

According to the commanding officer, the soldier is being sent to jail for
disobeying orders for opening fire. His gunfire wounded a 14-year-old Arab
youth in his abdomen.

The soldier, a member of the Givati Brigade, fired in southern Gaza near
Kfar Darom on February 3, 2001, striking the youth who the commander
stated did not present a threat to the soldier=92s life.

                                ++++
16. Labor secretary says no to national unity
(BNI-FEB.25) Changing his previous position, Labor Party Secretary MK
Raanan Cohen on Sunday announced he opposes his party=92s inclusion in a
national unity government headed by Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon.

Cohen explained that the Labor Party must first place its own affairs in
order and elect a new head before it can enter into a coalition agreement.

On Sunday night, opponents to joining a coalition headed by Sharon are
staging a rally in the hope of increasing support against the move in
advance of the Monday convening of the 1,700-member Labor Party Central
Committee.

IDF Spokesperson: The Detonation of a Booby Trapped Doll Left Behind by a
Terrorist Cell that Tried to Infiltrate Into Israel from the Gaza Strip

25 February 2001

This past Friday night IDF soldiers thwarted an attempted infiltration by a
terrorist cell into Israeli territory on the border fence, north of the
Nahal Oz crossing.

IDF soldiers identified the attempt to infiltrate and fired towards the
terrorists who escaped into territory of the Palestinian Authority.

During searches conducted Saturday morning and today they found an object
that was placed by the terrorists.

This morning IDF sappers detonated the object, and concluded that it was a
booby-trapped doll. During the detonation
of the doll, a mine exploded near the force. There were no casualties as a
result of the explosion.

Subject: [bprlist] Jubilee
From: "Moza"
Date: Sun, 25 Feb 2001 20:37:19 -0500

Please Excuse My Miscalculations.

Over the past decade or more, in my lectures and particularly in the
November 1996 RESEARCHER, I have indicated that we might
expect=85prophetic events to be wrapped-up before and during Israel=92s
Jubilee year. Since the rebirth of Israel took shape during the years of
1947, 1948 and 1949, I projected that the climactic events should be
expected a Jubilee or 50 years later. The things simply did not happen as
quickly as I had anticipated. As the old adage goes, =93a watched pot never=

boils.=94 All the players were on the field, the spectators were all in the=

stadium, but the whistle never blew for the kick-off. Then Something Did
Happen!

As the Jewish New Year 5761 rolled around, those things we expected
to happen began to fall into place. Why the almost three year delay? My
daughter Sarah and I were discussing these expectations when she
reminded me that this was the second Shmitah (Sabbatical Year) that they
have lived in Israel on the settlement of Ma=92aleh Levonah. =93Yeah, Dad,=

you know that the Rabbis say that next year 5762 is the Jubilee year
because 5761 is the seventh Shmitah since the establishment of Israel in
1948 or 5708.=94

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who=92s the dumbest of them all? Why did I
calculate 1998-1999 as Israel=92s Jubilee year, when it was only the 50th
anniversary year of the formation of the state? It was not the 50th Jubilee=

year? The Rabbis calculate the first Shmitah in Israel=92s Third
Commonwealth as beginning in 1951, three years after their
Independence. Hence, counting seven Shmitahs or 49 years brings us to
the year 5761 on the Jewish Lunar Calendar or October 1st, 2000 CE on
the western Gregorian Calendar. This is the beginning of the Seventh
Shmitah year or the Seventh Sabbatical year of this Third Commonwealth
of Israel.

Gal-Gal, Gil-Gul, Gil-Gal

Gal-Gal is a wheel or tire. Gil-Gul is a turning, as in Gilgul HaNefesh, th=
e
recycling of the soul. Gilgal is to rollover or turn over. In Joshua 5:9 we=

read, =93And the L-RD said to Joshua, =91See, this day have I rolled away
(Gil-Gal) the reproach of Egypt from off you.=92 Therefore, the name of the=

place was called Gilgal.=94

=93The wheels (Gal-Galim) of G-D turn slowly, But they grind (groan)
exceedingly fine. And they never stop (Gilgalim) rolling over.=94

The Exodus happened on the 14th day of the first month in the Jewish
Year 2448. The Rabbis calculate that Israel entered their first
Commonwealth at the end of the 40 years wandering on the tenth day of
the first month in the Jewish year 2489. The 14 years they were at Gilgal
brings the date to 2503 before they occupied their inheritance. The
Rabbis calculate it as the year 2502 because each of the families of the
tribes had actually moved to their inheritances two full weeks following
Yom Kippur of the year 2502, so they could broadcast (plant) seed for
the coming year of 2503. This is also one reason why they observe Rosh
HaShanah, or the beginning of the Jewish New Year, at the Autumn
Equinox [the 7th month, seed planting time] of Tishri rather than in the
Spring equinox [the 1st month, spring harvest time] of Nissan. Thus, the
reckoning of the seventh Shmitah in the century falls on the 1st and 51st
years of each century making the Jubilee occur on the subsequent 2nd and
52nd years accordingly.

However, I still have an unresolved question regarding this calculation. If=

the 1st year of the counting of the Shmitah Year began the 1st year
following the Jubilee Year, then it seems that the Jubilee would ascend by=

one calendar year each Jubilee or 50 years. Since the Rabbis still
calculate the Jubilee to always occur on the 2nd and 52nd years of each
century, I guess I will have to revert to my original question: Mirror,
mirror on the wall, who=92s the dumbest of them all?

So, the Prophecies Were Seemingly Dragging their Heels These Past
Three Years

Calculating from 1947-1948 and 1949 from the rebirth of Israel, the
Jubilee related things should have happened in 1997-1998 and 1999 but
did not occur. When we revised our computation so the seventh Shmitah
occurs in 5761 or 2000-2001, the Jubilee occurs in the year 5762 or
2001-2002. Now, things that we suspected would occur three years ago,
we see unfolding at the beginning in October 2000.

Which Calendar, the Lunar or the Solar?

The Calendar used by the Jewish World since about 175 BCE is a
Lunar/Solar system that is regulated with the Solar Year by adding an
extra month 7 times each 19 years. There is no difference between the
two systems in the counting of the years. The difference, however, is that=

according to the Jubilee System, Rosh HaShanah (the head of the year) is
reckoned on the first day of the first month in the Spring equinox at
sundown March 21.

The other accepted Lunar/Solar calendar holds that Rosh HaShanah
occurs at sunset on the first day of the seventh month of the New Moon,
on or near the Autumn Equinox on September 23. The latter must also be
adjusted during certain years by adding extra months. According to the
Jubilee calendar, used by the Qumran community, Rosh HaShanah 5761
will not occur until sunset, March 22, 2001. According to the calculations=

on the Jubilee calendar, we are still in 5760 until March 22, 2001. No
one would question that the events we expected to unfold over the past
three years are indeed happening now. This is why I always say: =93G-d=92s=

time is not always our time, so again, let=92s let time be the interpreter!=
=94

Don Hutchinson pointed out something very intriguing regarding these
events that he found in the exhaustive work known as Me=92Am Lo=92Ez,
also called The Torah Anthology. The Parashah HaBrachah (the
blessings) in Deuteronomy 33:1-34:12 is read at the end of the Torah
readings for this year, during Simchat Torah (rejoicing in the Torah). This=

is when Deuteronomy is concluded and Genesis is begun again. Before
starting again with Genesis 1:1 this year, HaBrachah was read on October
21-28. This year, both Shabbat and the 8th Day of Succoth fell on
October 21.

Hutch found that the Rambam (Maimonides), in his Book of Redemption,
section seven, expounds on the final redemption of Israel in the last days.=

The dissertation begins with the word T=92vout, in Deuteronomy 33:16
which is not translated in the English texts. It is absorbed in the phrase=

=93the Sun=92s yield=94 (T=92vou oat-Shemish). It is an irregular verb form=
,
combining the future marker before the =93past=94 tense of the verb of the=

word =93He shall come=94 with the past tense of the same root, Botah. He
came and will yet come again. This metaphoric reference has to do with
the house of Joseph. Joseph was the first to come into exile in Egypt, and=

Joseph will be the first to come back to Eretz Yisrael in the Messianic
Age. Rabbenu Bachya explains that the Ten Northern Tribes [of the
House of Israel] will be redeemed 53 years before Judah=92s exiles will be=

returned (and redeemed) in the Era of Messianic Redemption.

How do the Rabbis come to that conclusion? They conjecture that when
the Babylonians destroyed Judaea and Jerusalem in 3338 that many of the
House of Israel, whose ancestors were dispersed by the previous
Assyrian Captivity, returned slowly and spasmodically to their inheritance.=

Only after 52 years did Zerubbabel begin his organized return in 3390.
This was 52 years after the Babylonian Captivity. The year 3391 was
Judah=92s first year to re-establish the Second House, in the 53rd year aft=
er
the Captivity. This year is the 52nd year of Israel=92s 3rd Commonwealth.
This re-occurrence implies that the final re-gathering of Israel in the Tim=
e
of the End, or the 53rd year, will be the pivotal point of turning from the=

old (goyish) socialist regime!

This, the 52nd anniversary year of the present fiasco, is perhaps the dying=

gasp of the old guard. It is also the seventh Shmitah that precedes the fir=
st
Jubilee of Israel=92s Third Commonwealth. The suggestion is that perhaps
the Third Commonwealth of Israel will have a life span of only 52 years.
Then the =93new era=94 begins. Ben-Gurion=92s anti-religious regime led by=

Bolsheviks will fall after the 52nd year of Despotic Tyranny. A Socialist
Zionist Israel does not merit survival! Strangely, the Persian Empire also=

endured only 52 years. The destruction of the old guard does not mean
the destruction of the State of Israel; it only marks the end to a rule tha=
t
was socialist and therefore anti-Torah.

Jeremiah=92s 70-year period also holds a certain mystique. My cousin, Lois=

Hermann, pointed out that the 70-year Babylonian Captivity seems to be
echoed in The Papacy. It was exiled from Rome 70 years. The tyrannical
Union Socialist States of Russia (USSR) was born in 1917. Seventy
years later, in 1987, the USSR crumbled and died. In 1932, American
Socialism was born in the form of Franklin D. Roosevelt=92s New Deal. His
Democratic Socialism that is still having an impact on our way of life will=

be 70 years old in 2002.

The book of Daniel in Chapter 7, verse 4 speaks of four Beasts,
specifically, the Lion (England) that had Eagle=92s wings (USA), the Bear
(USSR) and the Leopard (Germany). The prophet further expounds on
them in Daniel 7:12, =93As for the rest of the beasts =96 their dominion wa=
s
taken away, yet their lives were prolonged until a season and a time.=94

Sadly, the US has little or no right for continued protection from the
Almighty! G-D has been expelled from the US educational system and
from every aspect of the government. Under the Clinton White House
Administration, we have seen several successive violations of
justice=85The Clinton impeachment scandal and finally this year=92s electio=
n
fiasco are events that reflect a tyrannical lawlessness. Meanwhile, =93The=

Days of Man are the measure of the Mikvah.=94 A mikvah is 5760 eggs
(years) of time. That measure will be full on sunset on March 21, 2001.

Catholic-Muslim horror at Intifada

                  Reuters

The Vatican and al-Azhar, Sunni Islam's highest authority, voiced horror
yesterday at the violence in the "unjustly occupied" West Bank and Gaza
Strip. A statement from the Permanent Committee of al-Azhar for Dialogue
with the Monotheistic Religions and the Pontifical Council for Interreligious
Dialogue urged religious leaders to promote peace in the Holy Land. The plea
came after the committee's annual meeting in Cairo Saturday. More than 400
people - 331 Palestinians and 74 Israelis - have been killed since the Al-
Aqsa Intifada erupted on September 30.

26-FEB-01 =96 8:23am =96 Sunday night recap and more
****************************************************************

1. Yesha Council calls for Arafat=92s ousting
(BNI-FEB.26) In an Israel Radio interview on Monday morning, Yesha Council
director-general Shlomo Filber called upon the government of Israel to
ensure that PA Chairman Yassir Arafat is =91taken out=92 of the picture, us=
ing
the word to =93eliminate=94 him.

Filber stated council leaders do not care if Arafat is shipped back to
Tunisia or elsewhere, adding it has become crystal clear to Israelis that
anything short of this would not result in a peaceful solution in the
region.

Filber pointed out that over the past 100 days, Arafat continues to
orchestrate daily terror attacks against Israelis, particularly residents
of Yesha community. There have been over 2,000 shooting attacks and over
sixty Israelis killed with many more injured by PA gunfire, firebombs,
rocks and other weaponry.

Filber explained that in this so-called =91Al-Aqsa Intifada=92 as well as t=
he
earlier Intifada orchestrated by Arafat, many Israelis were killed,
injured and permanently maimed by Arafat=92s terrorism and it is now known
to the international community that Arafat is a terrorist and will never
permit peace to reign in the area as long as Israel continues to exist. =

                                ++++

8. Update on terror victims
(BNI-FEB.26) Hadassah hospital officials provided the following update on
terror victims Yossi Cohen and Rachel Levine at 8:00pm Sunday night. The
two were injured in terrorist attacks in Samaria on Sunday afternoon.

Yossi Cohen, a resident of Ateret, remains in Jerusalem=92s Hadassah
Hospital in Ein Kerem and has been taken out of emergency surgery where
physicians worked to repair damage from gunshot wounds to the head and
neck. Cohen is now admitted to a neurological intensive care unit and his
condition is listed as serious. Physicians remain optimistic, indicating
there does not appear to be permanent neurological damage from the head
wounds but there may only be a definitive determination further down the
road to recovery.

Rachel Levine, a resident of Ateret, was wounded in a separate attack on
Sunday. She is in Jerusalem=92s Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus and will
most likely undergo surgery for her gunshot wounds later on Sunday night.
Levine is listed in light condition, having been shot in her left hand and
sustaining shrapnel injuries to both legs.

                                ++++
9. No injuries in southern Gaza grenade attack
(BNI-FEB.26) There were no reports of injuries in a grenade attack against
IDF forces in southern Gaza on Sunday night. The attack occurred near the
Rafiah Crossing to Egypt. Soldiers returned fire.

                                ++++
10. PM/DM Barak orders removal of Gaza blockade
(BNI-FEB.26) Prime Minister/Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Sunday
evening
gave the order to remove the blockade implemented last week cutting Gaza
into two. In response to mortar attacks against Jewish communities, the
IDF was ordered to seal Gaza into two sections, barring travel from Khan
Yunis in the south to Gaza City heading north.

The announced rescinding of the order comes following an IDF report of 12
shooting attacks in Yesha between Saturday night and Sunday morning, with
most taking place in locations throughout Gaza. There were no injuries in
the attacks.

                                ++++
11. IDF denies reports by PA that Arafat=92s helicopter hit with restrictio=
ns
(BNI-FEB.26) The Office of the IDF Spokesman on Sunday night issued a
statement adamantly denying PA reports that Israel has imposed takeoff and
landing restrictions on the helicopter of PA Chairman Yassir Arafat.

The denial comes following accusations made by Arafat that the PA
helicopter was barred from landing in areas under total PA control by
Israel.

                                ++++
12. Two injured in Jerusalem stone-throwing attacks
(BNI-FEB.26) Two persons sustained light injuries in stone-throwing
attacks in Jerusalem=92s French Hill neighborhood on Sunday night. The rock=
s
were hurled at a bus passing the area.

An EMS ambulance was dispatched to the scene to treat the victims. One
was
transported to Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus. No additional
information is available at this time.

                                ++++
13. No injuries in Hebron shooting attack
(BNI-FEB.26) There were no injuries in a Sunday night shooting attack
against Jewish homes in Hebron. IDF forces returned fire. The shooting
originated in the nearby PA autonomous area.

                                ++++

14. No injuries in shooting attack against soldiers near Tul Qarem
(BNI-FEB.26) IDF soldiers operating in Samaria near the PA autonomous
municipality of Tul Qarem were attacked by PA gunfire on Sunday night.
There were no reported injuries. Soldiers returned fire.

                                ++++
15. Meretz rejects national unity
(BNI-FEB.26) The leaders of the left-wing Meretz Party have stated with
certainty that they oppose joining a national unity government headed by
Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon. Meretz officials are preparing to
become the major opposition party to a national unity coalition including
the Labor Party. Party officials did not officially vote against joining
the forming coalition, but were adamant in their opposition to such a move
and called on party leader MK Yossi Sarid to reach the appropriate
conclusions following his decision to back Barak=92s reelection rather than
endorse another candidacy such as Shimon Peres, who was turned away by
Sarid.

Meretz leaders had strong words of criticism for their former coalition
allies, the Labor Party, insisting they too have no business sitting in a
coalition with Sharon and the Likud Party.

3. Likud and Labor agree to rotation for chair of Knesset Law Committee
(BNI-FEB.26) The Likud and Labor Parties have reached an agreement
regarding which party will chair the powerful Knesset Law Committee in a
national coalition unity government.

The agreement stipulates that a Labor MK will chair the committee in the
first half of the government=92s term and a Likud candidate would then
replace him/her.

4. Gun battle in Gaza on Monday morning
(BNI-FEB.26) The IDF=92s Calanit and Yasmin outposts in the Gush Katif
district of Gaza were attacked by PA gunfire from Khan Yunis in southern
Gaza on Monday morning. There were no casualties to IDF forces. A gun
battle ensued.

5. IDF establishes checkpoint at site of terrorist attack
(BNI-FEB.26) The IDF has established another checkpoint near the Bir
Zeit Bridge in the Benjamin Regional Council district of Samaria following
Sunday=92s terror attack in which Ateret resident Yossi Cohen was shot in
his head. In the past, there have been about seven other shooting attacks
in the same area.

Cohen during the night underwent a second surgical procedure and remains
listed in serious condition in Jerusalem=92s Hadassah Hospital in Ein Kerem=
.
He is in a neurological intensive care unit and is breathing with the
assistance of a mechanical respirator. Physicians expressed optimism,
explaining there does not appear to be permanent neurological damage from
the head wounds. Doctors added however that a final determination of
neurological function may only be made in the future, down the road to
recovery.

Another terror victim, Rachel Levine, also from Ateret, is reported in
light condition in Hadassah Hospital in Ein Kerem as well.

She was shot on Sunday in a separate attack, in the same area as Cohen,
struck in her left hand and sustained shrapnel injuries to both legs.

                                ++++
6. Arafat & Mubarak to meet with Abdullah in Jordan
(BNI-FEB.26) PA Chairman Yassir Arafat will be meeting with Jordan=92s
King Abdullah II in Jordan on Monday. The leaders will be reviewing the
ongoing Oslo process between Israel and the PA, as well as the recent
visit to the region by US Secretary of State Colin Powell. Egyptian
President Hosni Mubarak will be arriving in Jordan on Tuesday.

Thank you for sharing the synopsis of subject audios. It was most
interesting and, to my thinking, corroborative. Since my hearing leaves
a lot to be desired I shy away from audios but my eyes are still
functional, with spectacles, so a written synopsis is appreciated. I
had not thought about the 'association' of each believer to the church
he attends but I can see it could be a very real possibility for I am
convinced every present-day Christian denomination has members who do,
in deed, 'confess with their mouth that Jesus Christ is the Son of God
and believe in their heart that God raised Him from the dead'. Praise
the Lord!

    Thank you, again.

God Bless you. Charlie Baker.

THE END IS NEAR?

WND linked to a Moscow Times story this week
(http://www.themoscowtimes.com/stories/2001/02/21/003.html) that
raised questions about the rise of the Antichrist, and we got a huge
response when we asked readers if they thought the biblically
predicted figure is alive today.

Almost 41% of respondents believe the Antichrist is alive - as an
adult - right now. Over 18% pegged Bill Clinton as the ultimate bad
guy. (Hillary wasn't listed, so we'll never know how she stacks up.)
About 11% admitted they "weren't sure," while 7% said the Antichrist
is just a child now. Still others aren't expecting the Antichrist
anytime soon, or ever.

We'll keep you posted.

A DREAM OF KILLING ARIEL SHARON

Listen in now as the editor of the Egyptian weekly, Al-Usbu', named
Mustafa Bakri, describes "a dream" he had (as translated by the Middle
East Media and Research Institute, www.memri.org).

In his dream, Bakri says he was sent by the Egyptian government to
serve as a bodyguard for Ariel Sharon in his visit to Egypt. Bakri
goes to meet Sharon at the airport:

"After a short while, the pig landed; his face was diabolical, a
murderer; his hands soiled with the blood of women and children. A
criminal who should be executed in the town square. Should I remain
silent as many others did? Should I guard this butcher on my
homeland's soil? All of a sudden, I forgot everything: the past and
the future, my wife and my children and I decided to do it. I pulled
my gun and aimed it at the cowardly pig's head. I emptied all the
bullets and screamed: blood-vengeance for the [Egyptian] POWs,
blood-vengeance for the martyrs.

"The murderer collapsed under my feet. I breathed a sigh of relief. I
realized the meaning of virility, and of self-sacrifice. The criminal
died. I stepped on the pig's head with my shoes and screamed from the
bottom of my heart: Long live Egypt, long live Palestine, Jerusalem
will never die and never will the honor of the nation be lost. I kept
screaming at the top of my lungs until my wife put her hand on me. I
woke up from this most beautiful dream and decided not to surrender to
humiliation."

BEST OF THE WEB

WorldNetDaily made the Wall Street Journal's "Best of the Web" column
yesterday for our article about Bill Clinton's forthcoming gig as a
fundraising speaker for . believe it or not, a Catholic hospital in
Canada. Clinton's "widely known defense of abortion directly
contradicts St. Joseph's Catholic moral code, and therefore causes
grave scandal," said one priest. Also in yesterday's 'Best of the
Web':

"On the once fiercely pro-Clinton Salon, one Joan Walsh offers this
news flash: 'Former President Clinton's disgraceful exit raises an
awful possibility: Maybe he was as morally bankrupt as his right-wing
enemies said.'

"Say it ain't so, Joan! Besides, don't you think you're being a little
hasty? After all, the Clintons have been in public life only since the
mid-1970s, and in the national spotlight for less than 10 years. Give
them a few more decades, and maybe they'll do something that reflects
some tiny semblance of integrity. As Ronald Reagan used to say,
there's gotta be a pony in there somewhere." And this, about Al Gore's
new job: "When Al Gore was first appointed to the faculty of Columbia
University's journalism school, we kept an open mind. But we were
appalled by the Boston Globe's account of Gore's lecture this week,
which dealt with 'global warming.' According to the Globe, 'students
said Gore went as far as suggesting it was a cop-out for journalists
to include skeptical views in reports about global warming.' "What is
Columbia, the nation's most prestigious journalism school, doing
hiring a politician to instruct its students that they should accept
his political agenda unquestioningly? An attitude of skepticism is
essential to journalism (and, we might add, to science). If the
Globe's account of his class is accurate, we hope Columbia will not
invite Prof. Gore back for the fall semester." * * * * *

DON FEDER JOINS WND DREAM TEAM!

Don Feder is a cultural warrior. For more than 15 years he has
chronicled the degradation of American culture from his perch at the
Boston Herald. His nationally syndicated column is now carried weekly
in WorldNetDaily.com.

Don and WorldNetDaily.com Editor Joseph Farah have been friends for a
long time. But, until recently, Don was not a denizen of cyberspace.
Only on a recent trip to Israel did Don discover the Internet -- and
WorldNetDaily.

He called Farah as soon as he got home.

"Joseph," he asked, "how do I get my column on WorldNetDaily."

"Easy, Don," said Farah. "You ask the boss nicely and you agree to
promote your column on WorldNetDaily in all your national media
appearances."

"Done," he said. "WorldNetDaily is amazing, Joseph. It's incredible. I
don't know how I got along without it."

"Don," said Farah, "Welcome to the club. We've been doing this for
four years now. Thanks and welcome aboard."

SEARCH AND YE SHALL FIND!
Ever since our sweeping technical changes and upgrades in early
January - involving a new main server and state-of-the-art online
publishing tools - WND has loaded faster and our capabilities have
increased dramatically. However, one major downside has been the
change of all of our URLs. That's right, well over 20,000 exclusive
WorldNetDaily articles and columns archived on our site over the last
almost-four years now have a different URL. Of course, they all
changed automatically within our site, so no sweat. The problem comes
when other sites who have linked to one or more of our articles prior
to the changeover - and there are thousands of such links out there -
seem now to have "dead links."

The link may be dead, but not the article! Very simply, go to
www.wnd.com and key in the article's title, or even key words - and
the article will be displayed, along with the new, permanent URL. If
you find one of these poor "dead" links, please know they are not dead
and apply artificial respiration as described above.

BASHING REAGAN ON HIS 90TH BIRTHDAY

A few choice quotes from our colleagues in the establishment press,
courtesy of the Media Research Center:

"The last time a Republican governor rode into Washington from the
West promising to cut taxes before sun up, it caused a bloodbath of
red ink that lasted for nearly 20 years." -Start of CBS.com commentary
by Dick Meyer, Feb. 6

"Democrats, collaborating on a smaller tax cut proposal, have vowed to
fight the Bush plan, targeting it as a budget buster that caters to
the rich. . Bob McIntyre of Citizens for Tax Justice can't forget the
last time Congress went on a tax cut spree in 1981. American is still
paying the bill" -CBS White House correspondent John Roberts, Feb. 5
CBS Evening News

"The ex-president did some good things, but, you know, to me, a lot of
Republicans have two blind spots: their hatred of Bill Clinton and
their deification of Ronald Reagan. You know, when it comes to Ronald
Regan, they're like the doting parents of an 8-year-old - everything
he does is remarkable. He single-handedly won the Cold War, which is,
that's the one that gets me the most. The Cold War was so much more
won by Harry Truman at the beginning and Gorbachev at the end than
Ronald Reagan . But when it came to things he just talked about, like
eliminating the deficits and eliminating welfare, it was Bill Clinton
who actually did those things." -Bill Mahar, host of ABC's Politically
Incorrect, Feb. 6

Subject: [bprlist] Shanghai Plans a Skyscraper for 100,000
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>
Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 13:58:39 -0500

SHANGHAI PLANS A SKYSCRAPER FOR 100,000
Unlike the Great Wall, it would not be seen from space. But a 3,700ft
Bionic Tower that China's leaders are considering building may come to
rival the wall as a feat of human engineering and symbol of national might.
Officials in the teeming port city of Shanghai are discussing plans to tackle
urban overcrowding by creating a 300-storey home for 100,000 people. Its
European designers describe it as a "vertical city".
The concrete, metal and glass tower, costing about £10bn, would be
140ft higher than Mount Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales, and would
contain hotels, offices, cinemas and hospitals. Dwarfing Kuala Lumpur's
twin Petronas Towers, the world's tallest buildings at 1,483ft high, it would
be set in a gigantic, wheel-shaped base incorporating shopping malls and
car parks. The Spanish architects envisage 368 lifts, with the journey from
bottom to top taking less than 2 minutes. Water and energy would be
transported along 92 vertical columns.
"Of course, we'd all like to live in a house on the beach, but Shanghai's
population is expected to reach 30m over the next 4-5 decades," said
Professor Javier Pioz, the head of the team that designed the Bionic Tower.
"We need a new way of conquering vertical space." Pioz has created a
root-like system of foundations that would descend 656ft,
surrounded by an artificial lake to absorb vibrations caused by any
earth tremors. The top of the tower is predicted to oscillate by a
maximum of nearly 8ft, as much as the Empire State Building in New York
but so slowly that it would not be perceptible to inhabitants.
People would be banned from opening the windows of their apartments, but
could breathe fresh air on concourses thanks to openings in the outer glass
and aluminium shell. They would live on 12 levels and although some people
would move in as soon as the first level was completed it would be 15 years
before the building work above them finally stopped.
The designers have met Xu Kuangdi, the mayor of Shanghai, and urban
planners, who have indicated a willingness to proceed and have set up a
group to consider possible sites and how to meet the cost from both private
and public funds. Marco Goldschmied, the president of the Royal Institute
of British Architects, said the project could herald a much-needed new way
of thinking about urban sprawl in China, which is already building the
equivalent of 600 cities the size of Bristol. In Shanghai alone 10 new
districts are expected to be built over the next 5 years, each big enough to
house 100,000 people.
"If you can send a man to the moon you can certainly build a tower for
100,000 people," said Goldschmied. He hoped the project would form a
blueprint for future developments that would help preserve the environment.
However, he added a warning: "The main pitfall is the towering inferno
scenario - what happens if fire breaks out? It could be the ultimate disaster.
Imagine 100,000 people suffocating. And you'd have to organise the place
pretty well to stop people feeling like rats in a cage."
Pioz says the risk of fire has been taken into account, with sealed
compartments built in to act like fire doors. People escaping from a fire on
one level would need to flee only 40 yards away, upwards or downwards,
to the closest safe area, he said. "When the Eiffel Tower was built, many
people said it was too dangerous - they wanted to kill Mr Eiffel. But it's still
standing." (The London Times)

Subject: [bprlist] Release of biotech insect planned
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>
Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 14:11:19 -0500

Release of biotech insect planned

WASHINGTON: By tinkering with genes, scientists have made tomatoes
that stay
fresher longer, crops that are immune to weed killers and fish that grow
faster. Now, a genetically engineered insect is emerging from the lab.

The first field trial of a biotech insect a pink bollworm moth that contains
a jellyfish gene is planned for this summer. The gene gives the moth larvae
a fluorescence.

If the experiment involving a major pest for cotton growers goes as planned,
scientists are ready with their next step: testing a biotech version, called
the ''Terminator'' by farmers, that is sterile, but sexually active; it is
designed to mate with wild relatives and eliminate their offspring.

Some 3,600 moths with the jellyfish genes are to be set free under screened
cages in a government-owned cotton field near Phoenix. The next step would
be to add genes that make the moths sterile.

''We're being very, very careful about what we're doing,'' said Robert
Staten, an agriculture department scientist who will run the field trial.

The experiment is being conducted and regulated by department's Animal
and
Plant Health Inspection Service because of its authority for controlling
plant pests. Staten expects the agency to grant approval this spring for the
release.

''We're going to take as conservative an approach as we can and still move
forward,'' he said.

Some biotech critics are alarmed while some scientists, who support the
technology say the government is not prepared to properly regulate biotech
insects.

Under development, for example, are disease-preventing mosquitoes that
could
deliver vaccines to the people they bite or carry their own antibiotics.

''When you're talking about insects you're talking about extremely
promiscuous organisms that will mutate and breed quite uncontrollably,''
said Charles Margulis, an anti-biotech activist with the environmental group
Greenpeace.

He said there is no guarantee that an insect designed to be sterile will
turn out that way.

The pink bollworm moth infects about 500,000 acres of cotton in the
southwest. Farmers control have three options to control them: spraying a
lot of insecticide; planting an expensive variety of genetically engineered
cotton that makes its own insecticide; or by releasing moths sterilised by
irradiation.

Irradiated moths are less effective in areas with heavy infestation because
the treatment damages the insects so much that they are slow to mate. The
genetically engineered moth is designed to have the same sexual prowess as
its wild cousins.

''He'd be fully sexually aggressive and go out and meet and breed. He'd be
the first guy in the bars at night,'' said John Benson, a farmer in
California's Imperial valley and a member of the California Cotton Pest
Control Board, which has funded the research through producer fees.

''We see this as the one sure way to get eradication,'' he said.

It takes 60 irradiated moths for every wild one to make sure there are
enough to mate and eliminate the chance of offspring. With the biotech
moths, a 5:1 ratio is sufficient, said Thomas Miller, a University of
California-Riverside entomologist who developed the moth.

The biotech moths would be cheaper for farmers to use than the gene-altered
cotton, Miller said. The biotech cotton, although highly effective, costs
farmers up to $30 an acre more than conventional cotton.

Some biotech critics are concerned that overuse of the gene-altered cotton,
known as BT for the insecticide it contains, will lead to an increase in
insect resistance to BT sprays, which are used on fruit and vegetable crops.

Use of a biotech moth to control pink bollworm infestations makes that
resistance less likely to develop, said Charles Benbrook, an agricultural
consultant to environmental groups.

This summer's experiment with the biotech moths will be conducted in three
cages, each about 12-feet wide by 24-feet long. The cotton field in which

There is little chance of the moths escaping ''barring a major weather
catastrophe,'' according to the application for the release.

As a precaution, the moths containing the jellyfish genes will be irradiated
to ensure that even if they do escape they can't reproduce. The gene-altered
moths will then be studied to see if there is any unusual behaviour. (AP)

Subject: [bprlist] Parents can freeze babes' stem cells

Parents can freeze babes' stem cells

Gerard Burke

IT IS hailed as the ultimate health insurance - the chance for parents to
give their child the means to defeat a range of previously incurable
illnesses.

For less than =A3600, parents are now able to freeze their newborn babies'
stem cells, which can be used to treat a range of diseases for decades to
come.

Stem cells are unformed cells which can be made to grow into any tissue in
the body, replacing damaged nerves, brain tissue, blood, organs, skin or
bone. Unlike a transplant, the new tissue would genetically identical to th=
e
patient so there are no dangerous side effects or problems with rejection.

Scientists believe stem cells are the key to the treatment and cure of some
of the most degenerative illnesses which afflict humanity. Early research
has revealed the prospect of a simple procedure to combat conditions rangin=
g
from leukaemia, diabetes and multiple sclerosis to Parkinson's disease,
some
forms of cancer and Alzheimers. They could also be used to repair the
damage
caused by a stroke.

The most convenient source of the potentially life-saving cells in in the
umbilical cord of a newborn baby and doctors believe it will soon be common
place for these to be harvested at birth to be stored in case they are
needed in later life.

Cryo-Care claims it can preserve the cells in liquid nitrogen for at least
20 years using the latest techniques.

The first samples of umbilical blood will soon be ready to be shipped off
for storage at a special facility near Brussels. Derek Tuffnell, a
gynaecologist at Bradford Royal Infirmary, will collect the first stem cell=
s
under Cryo-Care's scheme, he said: " I have two children and when I heard
about this technique I asked my wife if she thought it was a good idea. We
agreed that if we ever had a third we would certainly pay for it."

Subject: [bprlist] Looking at the dark side of biotech

Looking at the dark side of biotech

Web posted Monday, February 26, 2001

By Lee Bowman
Scripps Howard News Service

SAN FRANCISCO - As human technology becomes capable of splicing
genes to
create new forms of life, scientists and ethicists are wondering whether the
dark side of biotechnology can be avoided.
Experts in biological warfare addressing the annual meeting of the American
Association for the Advancement of Science here point to the threat of new
strains of bacteria and viruses developed by the former Soviet Union as an
example.

``Proliferation of bioweapons technology from these facilities is still a
concern,'' said Kathleen Vogel, a Cornell University researcher who has
visited some of the weapons plants. Among the possible contents: novel
strains of smallpox, anthrax and plague developed to be resistant or
impervious to existing vaccines or antibiotics.

Biomedical ethicists worry not only about biological warfare, but also the
biological damage that genetically unique organisms might wreak on plants
and animals unprepared for them by evolution.

``Even if you try your best not to do harm, sometimes by accident, you do,''
said Stanford University Medical Center researcher Margaret Cho during a
symposium on the implications of synthesizing new life forms.

She cited the experience several years ago of Australian scientists who
attempted to alter the mousepox virus by adding a gene for mouse
interleukin-4, a key immune system cell.

The new strain unexpectedly proved deadly in mice that had previously been
resistant to the virus, and even a vaccination against the virus was only
partially protective. The researchers delayed publishing their work in part
due to concern it might provide a blueprint for terrorists.

Jonathan Moreno, a biomedical ethicist at the University of Virginia, said
the threat of ethnically or even more narrowly targeted gene modifications
is ominous. ``There is emerging international concern about the
possibilities of ethnic warfare using targeted biological weapons,'' Moreno
said.

``It is already known that the old apartheid government in South Africa was
conducting research for the possible development of biological agents that
could be used against the black population. There have also been allegations
that Israel has shown an interest in these kind of targeted bioweapons,'' he
added.

Harvard University's Matthew Meselson, a molecular biologist and scholar of
biological warfare, worries that ``biotechnology will profoundly alter the
nature of weaponry and the context in which it is employed.''

He argues that biotech may not only present new ways to kill, but also to
manipulate the processes of ``cognition, development, reproduction and
inheritance'' and provide ``unprecedented opportunities for violence,
coercion, repression or subjugation,'' he told a symposium on biological
warfare threats.

Moreno noted that ``it might take decades to realize'' that an attack
directed at, say, birth rates or infant mortality of a certain ethnic group
had even occurred. ``By that point, a population of people might be
seriously diminished.''

Stephen Morse, a public health expert at Columbia University School of
Medicine in New York, said, ``There is a great potential for danger from
altered strains or even existing strains in bioweapons. But at the same
time, there's great hope from biotechnology for dealing with these
problems.''

He cited an array of new instruments being developed by the Pentagon that
will allow rapid detection and identification of biological agents in the
field. These range from germ ``breathalyzers'' to detect what bacteria might
be in a soldier's lungs, to miniature mass spectrometers that could identify
one germ from tens of thousands.

``I understand the concern about developing new life forms that can be
self-replicating with some minimal number of genes,'' said J. Craig Venter,
CEO of the genetic sequencing giant Celera, Inc. ``But our ability to
quickly screen and identify genetic code should be a great deterrent to any
development of new biological warfare pathogens.

``A few years ago, it took labs working for the FBI three days to determine
if a threat of an anthrax release in Nevada was real. Now, it would take us
less than two hours to do the sequencing,'' Venter said.

Frankengene warfare or terrorism aside, Stanford's Cho also expressed
concern about how the way we view life and various life forms might be
changed as genes are mixed and matched to make species more useful to
humans.

``How many human genes can you add to a monkey before it becomes
something
you would call human?'' she asked.

1997. Tickets to the show should be popular, as the comet
threatens to make its apparition a one-time engagement.

*** U.S. said to export torture weapons

WASHINGTON (AP) - Dozens of U.S. companies sell weapons and other
equipment used overseas for torture, Amnesty International said
Monday, calling for a ban on the sales. The items include high-tech
electroshock weapons, leg irons and serrated thumb cuffs designed to
tear flesh if a detainee tries to get free, said a report by the
U.S. chapter of the London-based human rights group. Although it is
illegal to own some of the equipment in the United States, Amnesty
International said the Commerce Department has granted export
licenses for sales valued at $97 million since 1997 under the
category of "crime control equipment." It said some 80 American
companies were involved in the manufacture, marketing and export of
the items. The equipment could also be used for legitimate law
enforcement reasons, including to restrain or subdue detainees. But
Amnesty spokesman Alistair Hodgett said the group still believes
some of them are "inherently cruel" and their export thus should be
banned outright.

*** Tribunal convicts Bosnian Croats

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) - The U.N. war crimes tribunal on Monday
convicted a senior Bosnian Croat military officer and a high-ranking
civilian Bosnian Croat of war crimes against Bosnian Muslims. The
court said Dario Kordic, a leader of the nationalist Croatian
Democratic Union and of the Croatian Defense Council, helped plan
and organize a campaign to drive Muslims from an area the Croats
wanted to join to the newly created state of Croatia. Kordic, 40,
was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment. The tribunal also convicted
Mario Cerkez, 41, a Croat military commander, of war crimes in
leading attacks against Muslim villages during the Bosnian war in
1993-94. He received a 15-year sentence. Presiding Judge Richard May
of Britain said Kordic was involved in crimes "characterized by
ruthlessness and savagery and in which no distinction was made as to
the age of its victims: Young and old were either murdered or
expelled." Kordic, a politician, was found innocent of being among
those who set the policy of ethnic cleansing, but was "enthusiastic"
in carrying out the campaign "and played an instrumental part," the
judgment said.

*** Iraq opens talks with United Nations

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Iraq and the United Nations opened a new
chapter in their tumultuous recent history Monday with talks aimed
at breaking an impasse that has kept U.N. weapons inspectors out of
Baghdad for more than two years. Expectations were low that two days
of talks between Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Foreign Minister
Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf would produce any breakthrough on
restarting inspections - or on lifting sanctions, as Baghdad has
demanded. Indeed, Annan tempered expectations as he arrived at U.N.
headquarters, saying he didn't expect miracles. But he said he was
encouraged by what he called an "important and healthy shift" in the
attitude about Iraq sanctions from certain governments. He cited the
review that the Bush administration is conducting into its Iraq
policy, and similar assessments being undertaken by other key
governments about sanctions.

*** Cardinals called to Rome in May

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Cardinals from around the world have been
summoned to the Vatican in May to discuss church strategy in the new
millennium, the first such meeting in seven years. There has been no
formal announcement, but Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga
of Honduras said Pope John Paul II called the meeting to discuss a
letter he issued in January that raised such issues as the church's
missionary activities, the need for a spirit of reconciliation and
the sharing of authority among bishops. The Honduran prelate was one
of a record 44 new cardinals elevated by the pope last week. The May
meeting will bring together both the 135 cardinals under the age of
80 and eligible to vote for a pope and those older. The forum will
certainly put a spotlight on the College of Cardinals, the body that
will someday elect a successor from its ranks to John Paul, now 80.

*** Settlers call for Arafat's head

JERUSALEM (AP) - Prominent Jewish settlers asked their government
Monday to expel or assassinate Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat as
payback for a growing number of attacks on Israelis. The call came
in response to two Palestinian shooting ambushes that wounded two
Jewish settlers. Israeli security officials said Arafat's elite
Force 17 unit was involved in Sunday's attacks, Israel radio
reported. Yehoshua Mor-Yosef, spokesman of the Jewish settlement
movement in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, said Israeli commandos
must target Arafat. "Arafat is an enemy; he was never was a partner.
After seven years of war and him sending his own people to kill, we
need to assassinate him," Mor-Yosef told AP. He said his views
reflected those of the Settlers Council, an umbrella group for more
than 140 settlements in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. As a second
option, Israel could expel the Palestinian leader, Mor-Yosef said.

*** Taliban: Statues must be destroyed

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Afghanistan's hardline Taliban rulers
ordered the destruction Monday of all statues, including a giant 5th
century Buddha that is said to be the world's tallest of its kind.
The order came from the Taliban's supreme leader, Mullah Mohammed
Omar, who issued an edict declaring statues, including the ancient
Buddhas, as insulting to Islam. "Because God is one God and these
statues are there to be worshipped and that is wrong. They should be
destroyed so that they are not worshipped now or in the future,"
Omar said in his edict, published by the Taliban-run Bakhtar News
Agency. Afghanistan's ancient Buddhas are located in Bamiyan, about
90 miles west of the Afghan capital of Kabul. One Buddha, measuring
175 feet, is said to be the world's tallest statue in which Buddha
is standing up rather than sitting. It's not clear what prompted the
latest edict from the Taliban. The religious army espouses a harsh
brand of Islamic law and reviles all images as contrary to the
tenets of Islam.

*** Justices won't hear abortion doctors

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court said Monday it will not hear
South Carolina abortion providers' complaint that they are subject
to unconstitutional and medically pointless regulations. The court,
without comment, turned aside the claim by doctors that additional
medical and safety rules imposed by the state are really just an
attempt to undermine abortion rights. The conservative-led court has
a narrow majority in favor of the basic right to an abortion, but in
recent years it has allowed some restrictions on access to the
procedure. Four South Carolina abortion doctors claimed the disputed
rules "represent a concerted attempt to chip away at the right to
abortion" and violate the Constitution's guarantee that everyone
will be treated equally under the law.

The World Seen From Rome

CONSISTORY IN MAY TO EXAMINE PETRINE MINISTRY
Central Theme of Meeting Will Focus on Recent Apostolic Letter

VATICAN CITY, FEB. 26, 2001 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II will convene an
extraordinary consistory May 21-24 of all the Church=B4s cardinals in order=
to
analyze, among other things, the Petrine ministry and episcopal collegialit=
y.

"The central theme of this sixth plenary meeting of the College of Cardinal=
s
is the study of the Church=B4s prospects for the third millennium, in light=
of the
Holy Father=B4s recent apostolic letter =B4Novo Millennio Ineunte,=B4" Vati=
can
spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said.

The Roman newspaper Il Messaggero said the cardinals will study the
Petrine ministry with the Pope, that is, the role and functions of the prim=
acy
of the Bishop of Rome, as well as episcopal collegiality, namely, the minis=
try
of bishops united among themselves and in communion with the Pontiff.

This is an issue the Pope addresses in Number 44 of "Novo Millennio
Ineunte": "The new century will have to see us more than ever intent on
valuing and developing the forums and structures which, in accordance with=

the Second Vatican Council=B4s major directives, serve to ensure and
safeguard communion. How can we forget in the first place those specific
services to communion which are the Petrine ministry and, closely related t=
o
it, episcopal collegiality?" According to Vatican expert Orazio Petrosillo,=

writing in Il Messaggero, the consistory might also address the state of
relations between the Catholic Church and Christian churches in the hope of=

"re-establishing full communion."

Moreover, the newspaper said the Pope and cardinals might make a final
evaluation of the Jubilee, in which they would discuss, in particular, the=

question of poor countries=B4 foreign debt.

JOHN PAUL II=B4S SPECIAL CONSISTORIES
Upcoming One to Address "Novo Millennio Ineunte"

VATICAN CITY, FEB. 26, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The newest extraordinary
consistory called for by John Paul II will be the first in seven years. =

At the last one, held June 13, 1994, the Pope articulated to the cardinals =
the
great challenge of moving forward toward full communion with the Orthodox
Church, after close to 1,000 years of separation.

The Vatican announced today that the next extraordinary consistory will be=

held May 21-24 to address questions posed by the Pope in his recent
apostolic letter "Novo Millennio Ineunte." All 183 cardinals have been invi=
ted.

During the first extraordinary consistory convoked by John Paul II, and hel=
d
Nov. 5-9, 1979, the cardinals analyzed the application of the Second Vatica=
n
Council, the reform of the Roman Curia, culture-Church relations, and the
question of Vatican finances.

At the Nov. 23-26, 1982 consistory, the cardinals discussed the Vatican=B4s=

finances again, following the bankruptcy of the Ambrosian Bank, a private
institution on which the Vatican depended for its operations. This consisto=
ry
continued to analyze the reform of the Roman Curia, and the application of=

the upcoming new Code of Canon Law.

The cardinals were convoked again, Nov. 21-23, 1985, to study the Holy See-
diocese and Pope-bishops relations. A decisive step was taken in the reform=

of the Roman Curia, which John Paul II implemented later.

The consistory of April 4-6, 1991, focused on two topics: "the war between=

the culture of death and the culture of life," and the attack of sects on t=
he
Catholic Church.

The June 1994 consistory looked at preparations for the Jubilee Year. Some=

cardinals expressed opposition to the petition for forgiveness that the Pop=
e
desired for the errors of the children of the Church throughout history. =

VATICAN AND JESUIT THEOLOGIAN REACH AGREEMENT
Ambiguities Found in Jacques Dupuis=B4 Book on Religious Pluralism

VATICAN CITY, FEB. 26, 2001 (Zenit.org).- If all believers can be saved, ar=
e
all religions the same?

This is the question that numerous faithful have asked the Holy See, after=

reading the book of a well-known Belgian theologian on the topic of religio=
us
pluralism.

In response, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith published a
"Notification" today, with the theologian=B4s approval, which clarifies som=
e of
the affirmations made by Jesuit Father Jacques Dupuis, on essential
aspects of the Church=B4s message.

The document analyzes the book "Toward a Christian Theology of Religious
Pluralism" (Orbis Book: Maryknoll, New York, 1997), written by the theology=

professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, who for decades
has taught in India.

The Vatican congregation, responsible for safeguarding the integrity of the=

deposit of faith, in its Notification said it "found that his book containe=
d
notable ambiguities and difficulties on important doctrinal points, which c=
ould
lead a reader to erroneous or harmful opinions."

The Vatican document, published in L=B4Osservatore Romano, is signed by
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and Archbishop Tarcisio Bertone, prefect and
secretary, respectively, of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.=
It is
the result of years of discussion with Father Dupuis, who from the very
outset admitted that "his hypothesis may raise as many questions as it
seeks to answer."

As both the author and the Vatican congregation acknowledge, the question
lies in the fact that the book "is not simply a theology of religions, but =
a
theology of religious pluralism, which seeks to investigate, in the light o=
f
Christian faith, the significance of plurality of religious traditions in G=
od=B4s plan
for humanity."

Therefore, it is about a new approach, and as all new arguments, confronts=

the author with "questions hitherto largely unexplored."

Cardinal Ratzinger and Archbishop Bertone acknowledge "the author=B4s
attempt to remain within the limits of orthodoxy in his study." The theolog=
ian
has confirmed his attitude in a series of responses, which he offered to
experts and consultors of the congregation June 30, 1999.

The Notification refers to the book=B4s arguments about the concept of
salvation in Christ, which can lead one to think that any religion is, in i=
tself, a
valid way for salvation. However, anyone who believes that there is salvati=
on
outside of Christ, although he has the right to so believe, cannot regard
himself with full knowledge as a Christian.

The Second Vatican Council taught that all believers of different religions=
are
saved if they are faithful to their conscience; however, they do so in virt=
ue of
the salvation brought by Jesus himself.

In particular, the Holy See explains that the "points concerned the
interpretation of the sole and universal salvific mediation of Christ, the =
unicity
and completeness of Christ=B4s revelation, the universal salvific action of=
the
Holy Spirit, the orientation of all people to the Church, and the value and=

significance of the salvific function of other religions."

In giving his acquiescence to the Vatican text, Father Dupuis, 76, has
committed himself "to assent to the stated theses and, in his future
theological activity and publications, to hold the doctrinal contents indic=
ated
in the Notification, the text of which must be included in any reprinting o=
r
further editions of his book, as well as in all translations."

The text of the Notification appears in today=B4s Documents section.

VATICAN NOTIFICATION ON JACQUES DUPUIS BOOK
Document of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith

VATICAN CITY, FEB. 26, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Here is a translation of the
"Notification" published by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith =
on
Jesuit Father Jacques Dupuis=B4 book "Toward a Christian Theology of
Religious Pluralism."

* * *

Preface
After a preliminary study of the book Toward a Christian Theology of Religi=
ous
Pluralism (Orbis Book: Maryknoll, New York, 1997) by Father Jacques
Dupuis,
S.J., the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith decided to proceed to =
a
comprehensive examination of the text by means of its ordinary procedure, i=
n
accordance with Chapter 3 of the Regulations for Doctrinal Examination.

It must be emphasized that this text is an introductory reflection on a
Christian theology of religious pluralism. It is not simply a theology of
religions, but a theology of religious pluralism, which seeks to investigat=
e, in
the light of Christian faith, the significance of the plurality of religiou=
s
traditions in God=B4s plan for humanity. Aware of the potential problems in=
this
approach, the author does not conceal the possibility that his hypothesis
may raise as many questions as it seeks to answer.

Following the doctrinal examination of the book and the outcome of the
dialogue with the author, the Bishop and Cardinal Members of the
Congregation, in the Ordinary Session of June 30, 1999, evaluated the
analysis and the opinions of the Congregation=B4s Consultors regarding the=

author=B4s Responses. The Members of the Congregation recognized the
author=B4s attempt to remain within the limits of orthodoxy in his study of=

questions hitherto largely unexplored. At the same time, while noting the
author=B4s willingness to provide the necessary clarifications, as evident =
in his
Responses, as well as his desire to remain faithful to the doctrine of the=

Church and the teaching of the Magisterium, they found that his book
contained notable ambiguities and difficulties on important doctrinal point=
s,
which could lead a reader to erroneous or harmful opinions. These points
concerned the interpretation of the sole and universal salvific mediation o=
f
Christ, the unicity and completeness of Chr! ist=B4s revelation, the univer=
sal
salvific action of the Holy Spirit, the orientation of all people to the Ch=
urch,
and the value and significance of the salvific function of other religions.=

At the conclusion of the ordinary procedure of examination, the Congregatio=
n
for the Doctrine of the Faith decided to draft a Notification, intended to=

safeguard the doctrine of the Catholic faith from errors, ambiguities or ha=
rmful
interpretations. This Notification, approved by the Holy Father in the
Audience of November 24, 2000, was presented to Father Jacques Dupuis
and was accepted by him. By signing the text, the author committed himself=

to assent to the stated theses and, in his future theological activity and=

publications, to hold the doctrinal contents indicated in the Notification,=
the
text of which must be included in any reprinting or further editions of his=

book, as well as in all translations.

The present Notification is not meant as a judgment on the author=B4s
subjective thought, but rather as a statement of the Church=B4s teaching on=

certain aspects of the above-mentioned doctrinal truths, and as a refutatio=
n
of erroneous or harmful opinions, which, prescinding from the author=B4s
intentions, could be derived from reading the ambiguous statements and
insufficient explanations found in certain sections of the text. In this wa=
y,
Catholic readers will be given solid criteria for judgment, consistent with=
the
doctrine of the Church, in order to avoid the serious confusion and
misunderstanding which could result from reading this book.

I. On the sole and universal salvific mediation of Jesus Christ

1. It must be firmly believed that Jesus Christ, the Son of God made man,
crucified and risen, is the sole and universal mediator of salvation for al=
l
humanity.

2. It must also be firmly believed that Jesus of Nazareth, Son of Mary and=

only Saviour of the world, is the Son and Word of the Father. For the unity=
of
the divine plan of salvation centred in Jesus Christ, it must also be held =
that
the salvific action of the Word is accomplished in and through Jesus Christ=
,
the Incarnate Son of the Father, as mediator of salvation for all humanity.=
It is
therefore contrary to the Catholic faith not only to posit a separation bet=
ween
the Word and Jesus, or between the Word=B4s salvific activity and that of
Jesus, but also to maintain that there is a salvific activity of the Word a=
s
such in his divinity, independent of the humanity of the Incarnate Word. =

II. On the unicity and completeness of revelation of Jesus Christ

3. It must be firmly believed that Jesus Christ is the mediator, the fulfil=
ment
and the completeness of revelation. It is therefore contrary to the Catholi=
c
faith to maintain that revelation in Jesus Christ (or the revelation of Jes=
us
Christ) is limited, incomplete or imperfect. Moreover, although full knowle=
dge
of divine revelation will be had only on the day of the Lord=B4s coming in =
glory,
the historical revelation of Jesus Christ offers everything necessary for m=
an=B4s
salvation and has no need of completion by other religions.

4. It is consistent with Catholic doctrine to hold that the seeds of truth =
and
goodness that exist in other religions are a certain participation in truth=
s
contained in the revelation of or in Jesus Christ. However, it is erroneous=
to
hold that such elements of truth and goodness, or some of them, do not
derive ultimately from the source-mediation of Jesus Christ.

5. The Church=B4s faith teaches that the Holy Spirit, working after the
resurrection of Jesus Christ, is always the Spirit of Christ sent by the Fa=
ther,
who works in a salvific way in Christians as well as non-Christians. It is=

therefore contrary to the Catholic faith to hold that the salvific action o=
f the
Holy Spirit extends beyond the one universal salvific economy of the
Incarnate Word.

IV. On the orientation of all human beings to the Church

6. It must be firmly believed that the Church is sign and instrument of
salvation for all people. It is contrary to the Catholic faith to consider =
the
different religions of the world as ways of salvation complementary to the
Church.

7. According to Catholic doctrine, the followers of other religions are ori=
ented
to the Church and are all called to become part of her.

V. On the value and salvific function of the religious traditions

8. In accordance with Catholic doctrine, it must be held that "whatever the=

Spirit brings about in human hearts and in the history of peoples, in cultu=
res
and religions, serves as a preparation for the Gospel (cf. Dogmatic
Constitution Lumen gentium, 16)". It is therefore legitimate to maintain th=
at
the Holy Spirit accomplishes salvation in non-Christians also through those=

elements of truth and goodness present in the various religions; however, t=
o
hold that these religions, considered as such, are ways of salvation, has n=
o
foundation in Catholic theology, also because they contain omissions,
insufficiencies and errors regarding fundamental truths about God, man and=

the world.

Furthermore, the fact that the elements of truth and goodness present in th=
e
various world religions may prepare peoples and cultures to receive the
salvific event of Jesus Christ does not imply that the sacred texts of thes=
e
religions can be considered as complementary to the Old Testament, which
is the immediate preparation for the Christ event.

The Sovereign Pontiff John Paul II, at the Audience of January 19, 2001, in=

the light of the further developments, confirmed the present Notification,=

which had been adopted in Ordinary Session of the Congregation, and
ordered its publication.

PESSIMISM HANGS OVER HOLY LAND
Pax Christi Delegation Gives Its Impressions of Region

BRUSSELS, Belgium, FEB. 26, 2001 (Zenit.org).- An "open air prison"
environment is how delegates of Pax Christi International described parts o=
f
the Holy Land.

Following a seven-day visit to Israel and Palestine, two members of the
Catholic peace movement=B4s delegation reported their impressions of the
troubled land.

The delegation included Bishop Ad van Luyn of Rotterdam, president of Pax
Christi in the Netherlands; Willem van Genugten, professor of international=

law at the Catholic University of Brabant, and of human rights at the Catho=
lic
University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands.

Other delegates were Tijl Declercq, former Belgian and Council of Europe
parliamentarian, coordinator of the Pax Christi Middle East working group i=
n
Flanders and former member of the executive committee of Pax Christi
International; Paul Lansu, international secretary of Pax Christi; and
Marjolein Wijninckx of Pax Christi in the Netherlands.

The trip was coordinated with Latin Patriarch Michel Sabbah of Jerusalem,
international president of Pax Christi. Paul Lansu emphasized that the Pax=

Christi representatives carried out their work "in complete independence."=

They spoke with Israelis and Palestinians, as well as political and religio=
us
leaders, and representatives of social and economic organizations.

The visitors=B4 first sight was of the Occupied Territories surrounded by t=
he
Israeli army and police, creating, in fact, an "open air prison," Tijl Decl=
ercq
said.

"In the village of Ramallah, north of Jerusalem, there is free mobility,"
Declercq said. "However, to go in or out [of the village] can take as long =
as
two hours. A truck full of earth or blocks of concrete is enough to close t=
he
road and establish a control post. Nothing can be done other than to arm
oneself with patience. For how long? The answer is as arbitrary as the
unexpected blockade of the road!"

"This kind of =B4prison=B4 is even more unbearable, because it endangers he=
alth,
if not the journey," Declercq added. "What can be done when the blockade
impedes the arrival of medicines, delays assistance to the wounded, or the=

urgent transport of a pregnant woman to hospital?"

In the Hebron region, the delegation said, Palestinians are harassed and
displaced as the occupation by Israeli settlers continues to unfold.

"Former Israeli military men and paramilitary groups are in accord with the=

police and army, who do not intervene despite the humiliations to which the=

Palestinians are subjected," Declercq explained.

This is a "strategy of terror," the Belgian added. "By refusing to interven=
e
against the abuses of the settlers, the Israeli police and army become
accomplices of the anarchy."

The Jewish settlements in the Occupied Territories are a major obstacle to=

peace, according to Pax Christi International. Not only does their
maintenance violate the elementary principles of international law, but the=

phenomenon has worsened since the Oslo agreement of September 1993.

To the 32,750 cells of family residences, established at the time in the We=
st
Bank and Gaza, 17,190 new cells were added up to July 2000. This addition
of 84,000 settlers has swelled the total number to 200,000.

The question of the Palestinian refugees remains unanswered. In its
statement, Pax Christi noted the refugees have increased from 750,000 in
1948 to 5 million, "parked in 59 camps in the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan,
Syria and Lebanon, or dispersed in other regions." These figures are taken=

from reports of the U.N. High Commission for Refugees.

"The principal claims as regards the refugees are the right to return [home=
]
and indemnification, as established in Resolution 194, voted by the U.N.
General Assembly in 1948. A first stage in the solution of this problem wou=
ld
be that Israel recognize the principal cause," Pax Christi underlined. The=

movement will defend this position next month before the U.N. Human Rights=

Commission. This commission=B4s 57th session will also discuss the
prosecution of Jewish settlements.

In addition to meetings with Patriarch Sabbah and Armenian Patriarch
Torkom II, the Pax Christi delegation met with leaders of churches, rabbis=

and the grand mufti of Jerusalem.

"They all said they count on the solidarity of Christians with the victims,=
"
Paul Lansu said. "Patriarch Sabbah insisted several times: solidarity with=

victims created by others. However, several also deplored that the role of =
the
churches continues to be weak and very silent when hatred should be
denounced."

Regarding the status of Jerusalem, Pax Christi criticized the view defended=

last year by Ehud Barak. The then Prime Minister said that a small
Palestinian community could be allowed in Jerusalem, under the sovereignty=

of the Jewish state, but without a direct link to the Occupied Territories.=
Pax
Christi maintains that the holy places and religious symbols must not be
used for political ends.

In the Holy Land, the Pax Christi delegation said, it found "no one who was=

optimistic."

"The Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister has acknowledged, however, that the f=
irst
victims of the situation are the Palestinians," the delegation said in its=

statement. "Yet, the minister does not see the tragedy of the entire
Palestinian people, violated in their rights for more than half a century, =
who
continue to suffer the situation as =B4an immense collective punishment=B4=

because of their violent protest in pursuit of their dignity."

On the contrary, the Pax Christi delegation heard the Israeli vice premier=

affirm that "to cede on the subject of the return of the refugees would be=

tantamount to signing the suicide of the people of Israel."

"It is as though with every passing day, the misunderstanding between the
two conflicting sides is aggravated," Pax Christi observed.

Pax Christi wants to help Palestinians and Jews to rewrite their history,
beginning with schoolbooks, which often perpetuate old prejudices.

"Here, Palestinians and Jews seem determined to address this work," Pax
Christi emphasized. "As regards Palestinians, this educational work will
require considerable material effort. Europe=B4s help would be very
appreciated."

"However, the role of Europeans should be addressed to an even greater
extent," according to the peace movement. The delegation=B4s observations, =
in
both Palestine and Jerusalem, once again prompt the urgent question:
"Where is Europe?" the statement concluded.

THE PERTURBER-MYSTERIOUS OBJECT IN THE OORT CLOUD

Feb. 21, 2001

Changing orbit is simple, really
By Billy Cox
A FLORIDA TODAY column

The distance from Earth to the sun - roughly 93 million miles - is known as
an astronomical unit. So when somebody says Jupiter is five AUs out, that
adds up to, well, whatever. And if somebody says something is 30,000 AUs
away, you feel like the straight man in "Revenge of the Nerds IV," so you
zone out and switch channels.

But somewhere out there, at around 30,000 AUs, along the outer band of a
massive cosmic debris field called the Oort Cloud, something very big and
very weird is going on. Because it hasn't been recorded visually, it only can
be inferred, like black holes. Whatever it is, the thing appears to be warping
the orbital patterns of comets. Scientists on opposite sides of the Atlantic
Ocean who've measured the sucker's effects are calling it The Perturber.

The Perturber isn't necessarily headed this way, nor does its crypto-life pass
for breaking news anymore; reports were published in the Monthly Notices of
the Royal Astronomical Society, as well as the journal Icarus, in late 1999.
What gives us pause is an ostensibly unrelated paper accepted last week by
Astrophysics and Space Science. More on that in a moment.

First, since nobody actually has seen The Perturber, it has a large audience
of skeptics. On the other hand, since two teams of scientists - one from
Louisiana University - Lafayette, another at Open University in England -
came to similar conclusions using contrasting methods, The Perturber
probably is worth a sharper lens.

According to Louisiana U. physics professor Dr. Dan Whitmire, a team of
UCLA researchers sent a proposal to NASA for fingerprinting The Perturber
in the infrared spectrum, but it didn't fly. So, until new instrumentation comes
along, the itinerate enigma will remain a source of speculation. Whitmire
says nothing about The Perturber has changed since the peer-review papers
came out in '99, other than the observation of even more comet patterns
bending along puzzling gravity contrails.

The guesswork continues, naturally, and the bulk of it holds that something
with this much clout's gotta be huge, something like three times the size of
Jupiter, at least. Maybe it's our sun's long-lost twin companion, the last gasp
of an imploding brown dwarf. That's what Whitmire thinks. But in England,
scientist John Murray thinks it's a planet that got ejected from a different
solar system.

Key word: ejected. Which brings us to the journal of Astrophysics and Space
Science.

By now, it should be pretty obvious we're in a global warming headlock.
Climatologists are warning us this year's freakish blizzards in the northern
latitudes are the result of the rush of freshwater from the disintegrating polar
caps altering ocean currents and jet stream patterns on a broad scale.

Locally, we're experiencing desert conditions on the drought index again:
Last Saturday's choking fire haze was 1998 all over again. So, we've gotta
do something.

Scientists at the University of California-Santa Cruz have an idea: Let's move
Earth farther away from the sun. We're gonna have to do it anyway, because
solar gases will begin expanding in 1.1 billion years as the sun's inevitable
unraveling unfolds. Maybe we should go ahead and do it now, so we can cool
off earlier.

It's really little more than an engineering project, insists planetary scientist
Don Korycansky. All you do is take a 62-mile-wide asteroid (you can find
these boys outside Pluto in the Kuiper Belt), and give it a nudge toward
Jupiter by sticking a fusion rocket on the thing. The goosed asteroid then
would slingshot around the sun and swing past Earth on its return to Jupiter.
Each round trip would take 6,000 years, but the passes would generate
gravity assists that theoretically would push us to a more moderate 140
million miles from the sun.

There are problems. The report says we could lose the moon. Or Earth's spin
axis could accelerate, meaning days and nights might last for just a few
hours each. Oh yeah, and Jupiter might get sucked 10 million miles closer to
the sun, and we might get pelted by an endless rain from the asteroid belt.

And, oh yeah, Venus and Mars must stay in their orbits for the plan to
work.

And there's a possibility the 62-mile-wide asteroid could veer into Earth
and, write the scientists, "sterilize the biosphere most effectively, at
least to the level of bacteria."

And they don't say this next part, but it stands to reason: Maybe the
residents of The Perturber already tried that, and The Perturbians
accidentally ejected themselves into the Oort Cloud.

Well, you never know. It's like National Missile Defense. We need to spend
the money and find out. Given what's at stake, a few hundred billion dollars is
nothing.

                         Source: USGS

Mon Feb 26,2001 -- Alongwith a long string of large and very major quakes
lately, now today another large quake hit the Sea of Okhotsk. That is just=

north of Japan, and East of Russia. The quake had a magnitude of 6.1.

Many good size after-shocks are also hitting the northern Molucca Sea, afte=
r
a large quake shook that area with a 6.1 on the 24th. That area is located=

south of the Philippines, and west of New Guinea.

Mon Feb 26,2001 -- An earthquake sent a sharp jolt through the San
Francisco Bay area Sunday afternoon but no damage was immediately
reported. The quake had a 4.4 magnitude, the U.S. Geological Survey
reported. It was centered 11 miles east of San Jose. Earthquakes with a
magnitude stronger than 4 can cause moderate damage. The quake was felt
as far south as Santa Cruz and north into Marin County. It lasted about 5
seconds and was then followed 9 minutes later by a 2.1 aftershock.

Mon Feb 26,2001 -- A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6=

jolted NE Japan Monday, only a day after a larger quake struck the area. Th=
e
quake struck at 3:08 p.m. just below the seabed off the coast of Fukushima,=

about 190 miles NE of Tokyo.

On Sunday, a magnitude 5.8 quake occurred at about the same location but
did not cause any damage or injuries. The agency said the 2 quakes were
related but there was no danger of increased seismic activity in the area. =
A
magnitude 6 temblor can cause severe damage if it occurs in populated
areas.

Germany's MVV to launch internet access via power grid

                         Weekend News Today

                         Source: Reuters

Mon Feb 26,2001 -- German utility MVV (MVVG.F) plans a summer launch
of groundbreaking technology which provides homes with high-speed,
internet access through the conventional electricity grid. The powerline
technology, which MVV is developing with Israeli partner Main.net, allows
voice and data signals to be transmitted over the power grid as an alternat=
ive
to existing telecommunications. This will be the first commercial launch of=

the technology which could revolutionise the way power utilities do busines=
s
and allow them to offer cut-price telecom services.

Powerline offers data transmission speeds of up to two megabits per second=

(Mbps), making it around 20 times faster than the integrated services digit=
al
network services offered by Germany's monopoly provider Deutsche
Telekom. With powerline, the internet is constantly available through power=

sockets without customers having to dial up. PPC board member Ingo
Schoenberg said legal barriers to powerline's market introduction will be l=
ifted
with the anticipated passing of a new law in July setting out conditions fo=
r
the use of the new technology.

Mon Feb 26,2001 -- "It is not practical to reach a full agreement with the=

Palestinians at this time, even if the violence stops." So said NSC Chairma=
n
Maj.-Gen. Uzi Dayan, in an appearance before the Industrial Guild in Tel Av=
iv.
"We must respond to their call for war, while leaving an opening for a stag=
ed
agreement." He said that the Palestinians must be made to understand that
"they cannot fight in the present while talking about the future=85 We must=

set clear goals in our war against the Palestinians."

Syria planning to toughen Israel boycott

                         Weekend News Today

                         Source: Jerusalem Post

Mon Feb 26,2001 -- Syria has prepared a plan to toughen the Arab boycott
on Israel and Israeli goods. The comprehensive plan will be submitted to th=
e
Arab Leagues=92 boycott office two months from now, according to Israel
Radio. Boycott officials claim that Israel loses some $3 million yearly as =
a
result of the boycott. Syria said the boycott is necessary in order to halt=

what it calls, "the Israeli infiltration into the Arab homeland."

Heavy fighting in Gaza Strip

                         Source: Jerusalem Post

Mon Feb 26,2001 -- Palestinians opened fire on IDF soldiers with heavy
machine guns a short while ago in the northern Gaza Strip, near the Jebaliy=
a
refugee camp. IDF tanks are firing back at them, Israel Radio reports. No
injuries have been reported. Intermittent exchanges of fire between
Palestinians and IDF soldiers is continuing in Gush Katif, near Khan Yunis.=

Israel sees smuggling as key to Iraqi nukes

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: Middle East Newsline

Mon Feb 26,2001 -- Israel is concerned that Iraq is quietly smuggling
enriched uranium or plutonium from former East Bloc nations as part of
Baghdad's efforts to build nuclear weapons. Israeli officials and analysts =
said
they don't expect Iraq to complete indigenous production of enriched uraniu=
m
or plutonium for another few years. But they said Baghdad could
compensate by smuggling such material from countries in the former Soviet
Union.

In such a scenario, Iraq would need only several months to complete a
nuclear bomb. "The assessment of Iran and Iraq is built on indigenous
capability and not smuggled uranium," said Shai Feldman, director of Tel
Aviv University's Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies. "If it obtains enric=
hed
uranium, then Iraq doesn't need three years. It could complete this in six=

months."

Saddam again moves troops near Jordan border

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: Middle East Newsline

Mon Feb 26,2001 -- Iraq has again moved troops and vehicles around
positions near the Jordanian border. U.S. defense sources said the
deployment ordered by Iraqi President Saddam Hussein began less than a
week ago and involved thousands of soldiers from up to six divisions as wel=
l
as military vehicles and artillery. Iraqi surface-to-surface missile batter=
ies
were not seen but were believed being prepared for operations.

The Iraqi deployment was a key issue during the visit to Israel by U.S.
Secretary of State Colin Powell over the weekend. "We are talking about a
worrisome development that comes despite our attacks on Saddam's anti-
aircraft batteries," a U.S. defense source said. "It appears we are dealing=

with a man who is not afraid and could act on moment's notice." The sources=

said Saddam's troop deployment near the Jordanian and Syrian border
appear to constitute a message to the Bush administration. They said the
deployment was ordered after the first attack on Iraqi aircraft batteries a=
round
Baghdad on Feb. 16.
