Just a response to Charlie Bakers comments:
Dr Derek Prince comments that the word "heavens" in Gen 1:1 is plural and
that the use of singular and plural words in juxtaposition in Gen 1:1 is
important and is a revelation of truth.
Literally it reads:
In the Beginning God (singular) created (plural) the heavens (plural) and
the earth..
Thus a singular God plurally created - the first indication in scripture
that God is more than one while being one. But the word we are interested in
here is "heavens" which is also in the plural. Dr Prince comments that this
can only mean all three heavens:
1. The physical universe - the first heavens.
2. Gods heaven - called the "third heaven" by Paul in 2 Cor - in which there
is a garden of Paradise.
3. The intermediate area - the "second heavens" - are not named so directly
in scripture but logically would have to be spiritual and so would (in my
understanding) correspond to the "heavenlies" of Eph 6 & elsewhere wherein
the Satanic forces have set up an angelic kingdom in rebellion against God.
These would correspond to the "mid heavens" of Rev 14:6 and the free
passage of an angel of God in the mid heavens here indicates the expulsion
of Satan and his forces from this area (as described in Rev 12) has taken
place. The destruction of the Satanic kingdom there leads to a great freedom
in preaching the gospel (as seen by the angel's proclamation) and a great
ingathering in the last short period before the Lord's coming.
Charlie seems to be making a strong distinction between spiritual and
physical in Gen 1 which actually reveals a common, but mistaken,
understanding of reality. The physical and spiritual are not as distinct as
we westerneers think, but are parts of the one interconnected creation of
God.
As I pointed out in an earlier email Job 38 indicates that the creation of
the whole universe outside of Earth and its immediate atmosphere seems to
have been completed by God - both spiritual and physical - before he began
his forming of the earth. The "sons of God" and "morning stars" both rejoice
when God begins his work in creating earth.
The earth was without form and void.
Hebrew: Tohu wa bohu.
Roughly translates for us "higglety pigglety" or "all mixed up". It simply
refers to the state of something that is yet unformed. Dr Prince insists
that it refers to something that is in a state of destruction, ruin, as a
result of a judgement, but I don't think his argument really holds up
overall even if his analysis of the use of tohu and bohu from scripture is
good. A lump of clay on a potters wheel is tohu wa bohu, as is the broken
pieces of the ming vase that has just fallen to the floor. Thus the earth
being, at this stage of God's creation "tohu wa bohu" is not really a
problem, rather just a statement of reality - God has made the substance of
the earth but now in v2ff he takes that unformed substance and gives it
shape and form.
The idea that "spiritual darkness" exists at this point of creation is
highly debatable. Some interpreters think that Lucifer fell before the
creaiton of earth, (As Dr Prince) but there is really no Bible evidence for
the idea. Rather it would seem that Lucifers rebellion is in the first
instance encapsulated in the temptation of Eve. But I wont go into the
argument for that now. "Darkness" noes no imply of itself evil as we are
told that God "dwells in thick darkness" and that he made the darkness - see
e.g. these verses Deut 4:11 Exod 20:21 2 Sam 22:21 Job 38:9 Psalm
18:11,97:2.
Can I suggest that: The mid heavens were made by God, YES, but not for
Satan, rather Satan has usurped them. That is why he is to be expelled from
them when God begins to restore all things. Rather they were made for God's
glory, to be populated in the ages to come by his people. Satan took
advantage of the fact that they were - at a point in history - unpopulated,
because God had not yet got around to populating them. The only place in the
Bible I can find that it is said that God has made for Satan and his angels
is Hell Matt 25:41. One habitation for the Devil is all God needs to supply.
Can I throw in an idea to think about (I do not want you to react but it is
worth thinking about.)
We have the idea that the spiritual realm is somehow ethereal and less
substantial than the physical realm that we know. As a result when we talk
of God as being "spiritual" we think that implies "non physical" or "non
substantial". This is in no way the Bible position. Just as starters for
your thinking let me make these points:
1. The book of Hebrews is structured around the idea that the spiritual is
more "real" than the physical and that the physical is but a copy or
"shadow" of the spiritual. This should suggest that the spiritual has more
substance than the physical.
2. The idea that the "spiritual" is "non physical" may not stand up - Jesus
when he rose from the dead reveals to us the true nature of the "spiritual"
realm - but he takes his "physical" body - transformed yet still physical,
able to be felt, to eat fish, to breath air - with him into the "spiritual"
realm.
3. When God recreates this world at the end of the age he apparently uses in
his new "spiritual" creation the physical materials of this creation.
It is something worth thinking about and transforms ones understanding of
reality.

1. POLLS SHOW GROWING SUPPORT FOR SHARON OVER BARAK
This week's polls, published in today's papers, show Likud Party leader
Ariel Sharon ahead of incumbent Ehud Barak in the prime ministerial race by
as much as 28 percentage points. A comparison of today's Gallup poll with
the previous two weeks, shows a clear increase in support for Sharon:
Dec 22, 2000: Barak 28% Sharon 46%
Dec 29, 2000: Barak 24% Sharon 45%
Jan 5, 2001: Barak 22% Sharon 50%
The above figures include the Arab vote. Amongst the Jewish-only vote, the
poll shows Barak with 22%, and Sharon with 55%.
A Dahaf poll published today indicated a smaller gap: Barak 32% Sharon
50%. A third poll carried out by the Geocartographic Institute, which will
be published tomorrow night, indicates a wide gap, closer to the Gallup poll.
2. SENIOR BARAK AIDE CONTINUES TALKS IN WASHINGTON
Prime Minister Barak's Bureau Chief Gilad Sher will meet this evening will
US President Bill Clinton to hear what precisely was Yasser Arafat's answer
to Clinton regarding his recent proposals for a final-status agreement
between Israel and the PLO. Sher said this morning that chances are slim
that any agreement will be reached before Clinton leaves office on January
20. However, CNN reports that Barak's aide brought with him a 6-page
document which he will present to US National Security Advisor Sandy
Berger. According to reports, the document contains a detailed outline of
a final-status agreement based on Clinton's proposals, incorporating some
Israeli reservations. The new proposal is the first written document from
an Israeli government which relates to details of a final-status
agreement. At Camp David, no written summary was drafted which obligated
the two sides.
Palestinian Authority official Nabil Sha'ath said today that he also
believes that no agreement will be reached during US President Clinton's
term in office. Sha'ath maintained that Prime Minister Barak is "playing
tough" in the talks in order to win votes from Israel's center and right in
the upcoming elections.
3. NETANYAHU: "OSLO IS DEAD"
"The Oslo Process is dead." So declared former Prime Minister Binyamin
Netanyahu yesterday while visiting hunger-strikers at Jerusalem's City
Hall. The hunger strike was launched to protest plans by the Barak
government to cede Israeli sovereignty over Judaism's holiest site - the
Temple mount in Jerusalem - to the Arabs. Netanyahu also told the
protestors at City Hall that all of the concessions made by the Barak
government to the Arabs at Camp David are null and void and will not
obligate the next government.
A giant non-partisan Jerusalem Solidarity rally entitled "Jerusalem, We
Pledge to You" is scheduled for this Monday at 6:30 PM across from
Jerusalem's Jaffa Gate. To ensure attendance from a broad spectrum of the
Israeli public, the vigil organizers are not inviting any Knesset Members
or government ministers to speak from the podium. Preceding the main
event, a human chain will encircle the walls of the Old City at 5:00 PM and
participants will "pledge loyalty to keep Jerusalem undivided, including
the Temple Mount." Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert will address the rally, as
well as other public figures and World Jewish leaders. The organizers of
the rally, the National Forum for Jerusalem (+972-2) 627-7416, have learned
that private flights are being organized from France, United States,
Russia, and England.
4. ARAB HOSTILITIES CONTINUE
An Arab man charged towards an IDF outpost last night shouting "Allah is
Great" - the common phrase hollered by suicide terrorists before blowing
themselves up. When the Arab man began to climb the fence of the outpost
located near the Erez Checkpoint in northern Gaza, soldiers shot and killed
him. His body was taken for burial by Arabs this morning. In southern
Gaza, Arabs opened fire upon IDF installations in Neve Dekalim and near
Rafiah.
Also last night:
* Arabs in Singel, in central Shomron, opened fire at a busload of Israeli
civilians and at a passing car.
* Near Ramallah and Shechem, Arabs fired shots into IDF bases.
* South of Tul Karm, Arabs shot an Israeli driver.
* The IDF detected a roadside bomb south of Hevron and successfully
defused it.
5. SHAS PARTY MAY ENDORSE SHARON
A deal is in the making between prime ministerial front-runner Ariel Sharon
and the religious Shas party. In exchange for promises from Sharon, Shas
will instruct its network of activists to work towards a Sharon
victory. Shas spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef will meet with Sharon
on Sunday to negotiate the final details of the agreement. One Israel
(Labor) Party faction whip Ophir Pines demanded today that the two parties
publicize the details of the agreement between them.
6. GRASSROOTS PROTESTS AGAINST DIVIDING ISRAEL
For the past five days, residents of Judea, Samaria and Gaza, (Yesha)
together with members of Professors for a Strong Israel, have been holding
a hunger strike at City Hall in protest against the government's
willingness to divide Jerusalem. Other Jewish protestors are hitting the
streets again today throughout Yesha in a series of marches under the
slogan "Israel is fighting for her soul." Today's protests include:
*Residents of Kfar Adumim, located 7 minutes east of Jerusalem, came
out
in the hundreds to march to the capital this morning.
*Hundreds of Israeli civilians are now gathering at various
intersections in the Southern Hevron Hills for protest and prayer vigils.
*Gush Katif residents marched from the northern tip of Gaza to the
Ashkelon junction, where they are now demonstrating.
*On the new Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway, some 200 people from Gimzo
marched calling on the government to keep Jerusalem united and put an end
to the wave of terrorist attacks.
*New civilian outposts established by several Yesha communities continue
to be manned and maintained.
7. FBI RAIDS KAHANE NY OFFICE
After six hours of searching the Hatikva Jewish Identity Center in
Brooklyn, New York, FBI agents confiscated some 90 crates of books, tapes
and photos, along with six computers. The FBI received a warrant to search
the Hatikva Center, which is dedicated to the "legal and peaceful
publishing of the Torah views and ideology of the late Rabbis Meir and
Binyamin Kahane."
Mike Guzofsky, Director of the Center, said in response: "No government
ever succeeded in silencing ideas. We will continue to speak and write our
truth. This is about ideas, free speech and the right to speak Torah
publicly. How shameful that after the brutal murder of the Kahanes, the US
government now pounces on those who do no more than distribute his
writings
and essays. This is nothing more than an effort to hamper the operations
and growth of law abiding Americans who wish to study and teach
the authentic Jewish idea...." Guzofsky also noted that the center's judo
class was held uninterrupted following the search, "with the exception of
the coach searching for his clothes which were taken by the FBI."
8. ISRAEL SIGNS FREE TRADE ACCORD WITH ROMANIA
Israel and Romania recently initialed a free trade agreement. The full
agreement is to be signed later this month during a visit by the
director-general of Israel's Ministry of Trade to Bucharest. The agreement
will gradually reduce the 20% duty imposed by Romania on Israeli goods to
a
level equivalent to that charged on industrial products originating from
Western Europe. Israel views Romania as a key Eastern European
market. This agreement completes the list of accords signed with other
European countries, further integrating Israeli products into the greater
European market.

Israeli Envoy To Present Written Reaction To Peace Proposal
A top Israeli diplomat plans to present a six-page document to the United
States Friday, outlining a proposal for a possible peace deal with the
Palestinians.
The document, addressed to U.S. President Bill Clinton's National Security
Adviser, Samuel Berger details the Israeli government's formal response to
U.S. parameters of a framework peace deal, Israeli officials told CNN.
The document was brought to Washington by Israeli negotiator Gilead Sher,
who arrived Thursday and met in the evening with senior U.S. officials at a
Washington hotel.
The opening comments of the document are "supportive of the president's
desire to move forward and of the parameters" verbally presented by Clinton
to Israeli and Palestinian negotiators on December 23 in Washington.
Asked if a peace accord can realistically be established before Clinton
leaves office, Sher said, "That is exactly why I am here ..." CNN

Barak Rules Out Refugee Return
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak has said his country will never agree to the
return of millions of Palestinians who were forced from their homes in what is
now Israel.
The refugees' right of return - restated by Arab foreign ministers on Thursday -
is one of the key obstacles to securing a lasting Israeli-Palestinian peace.
Mr Barak, who faces re-election next month, told the BBC that the alternative
to peace was an infinite cycle of violence between Israel and the Arab

Arab States Give Arafat Latitude To Cut A Deal - If That's What He Wants
While the rhetoric at the Cairo meeting of Arab foreign ministers on Thursday
may have sounded tough - Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa declared
at the post-meeting press conference that the leaders had agreed that the
right of return for Palestinians was "sacred" - the bottom line is that the Arab
countries have given Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat relatively
wide latitude in deciding whether or not he wants to accept the U.S.
proposals for a framework peace deal and reach a historic agreement with
Israel.
"They told him that he can't compromise on the issue of Jerusalem," says
Ha'aretz Middle East commentator Zvi Bar'el. "That's a pan-Arab and Muslim
issue. But they gave him slack on the refugee right-of-return issue. Moussa,
for instance, didn't even mention United Nations Resolution 194 (on the
refugees). It's important to note what he didn't say. He didn't talk about
practical implementation of the right of return." Ha'aretz
Hezbollah Satellite Used During Al Aqsa Intifada
Six months have passed since the Israeli Defense Forces withdrew from
southern Lebanon, and already Hezbollah has come to the assistance of the
Al Aqsa Intifada. On the eve of Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon,
Hezbollah television station Al-Manar , which was established in 1991 as a
local Lebanese station, began broadcasting via satellite.
"Al-Manar is the television station of the Intifada because it is the station of
the opposition," said deputy head of Hezbollah, Sheikh Naim Kassem. In
recent weeks, the station's programming has changed. Instead of images of
Hezbollah fighters detonating explosive devices against IDF troops in
southern Lebanon, images from the Al Aqsa Intifada are broadcast around
the clock. As a result of the fierce clashes in the territories, the station has
expanded its daily broadcasts from 4 to 18 hours or more per day. The
broadcasts can also be viewed in Europe, Africa, and the United States.
Hezbollah's website has also been revamped, and it now broadcasts the
television station. In addition to news programs, the station broadcasts
sports, religion, and cultural programs as well as gameshows and
educational shows for children.
The station broadcasts several newscasts every day to compete with other
Arab satellite stations that have been established over the past four years
and that have caused a revolution in Arab communications.
Hezbollah's station broadcasts stories filmed in the territories. It reviews the
actions of the armed Palestinians and those who hurl rocks. The station also
broadcasts programs on the role of the woman and wife in the occupied
territories. During commercial breaks, slogans such as "There are 300
million citizens of the Arab world and 5 million Jews in occupied
Palestine. What are you waiting for?" are broadcast. Ha'aretz
Israel Wants $350 m. From US Congress
Israel plans to ask the US Congress for $350 million in addition to the $2
billion it already receives in annual military aid, to help fund IDF preparations
for war.
Israel had hoped to receive a grant of $450 million in special aid, but
Congress failed to approve it last month. That money was to have helped pay
for the withdrawal from Lebanon and anti-ballistic missile projects.
A senior defense official said yesterday that the government plans to re-
submit its request for the extra funding as soon as the Bush administration
takes over.
Israel is also seeking another $350 million in special aid for building up the
military to meet the increased probability of war breaking out, senior defense

Albright: Violence Must Stop
US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said yesterday Palestinian
Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat must carry out commitments to reduce
violence. Albright also said that Israel and the Palestinians are very close on
some aspects of a peace agreement and the Clinton administration, which
hands over power to the incoming Bush team on Jan. 20, would work "to

US Denies Risk To Soldiers
The US Defence Department has denied Nato peacekeepers in the Balkans
are at risk from exposure to depleted uranium shells, despite increasing
concerns in Europe.
Pentagon spokesman Kenneth Bacon said the US military had carried out
extensive studies into the use of the weapons during the Gulf War, and had
found no evidence of a cancer or other health risk.
On Thursday, the President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi,
said he wanted to know the truth about the weapons and called for them to

Russia To Skip Debt Payment
Russia won't make its first-quarter payments this year on the billions of
dollars of debt owed to nations known collectively as the Paris Club, a
government spokesman was quoted as saying Thursday. But the decision
"does not mean and has nothing to do with a declaration of default," the
Interfax news agency quoted Gennady Yezhov, spokesman for Finance
Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Kudrin, as saying.
"A decision on the former USSR's debts will be found after an International
Monetary Fund mission comes to Moscow in late January or early
February," he said. The government information department later said that
Russia plans to pay all the amount shceduled for this year, the news agency

Milosevic Could Face War Crimes Trial
Yugoslavia may allow an international prosecution of former president
Slobodan Milosevic on alleged war crimes, as long as any trial takes place in
Yugoslavia, the country's new foreign minister has said.
Until now the new government has not gone further than suggesting that Mr
Milosevic could be charged with the lesser crimes of corruption and abuse of
power.
The UN International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, based in
The Hague, indicted Mr Milosevic in May 1999 for alleged crimes against
Kosovo Albanians. The new Yugoslav Government has made it clear a

agreement was to be achieved. Ben-Ami said Barak had shown greater=20
courage as a politician than he had ever had to show as a soldier. Nobody=20

"He is the most courageous politician in the history of the State of Israel=

Thursday. During the course of his visit, Ben-Ami met with the Swedish=20
prime minister, the head of the European Union, and with the German foreign=

minister. Ben-Ami is attempting to achieve maximum coordination between=20
Europe and the United States on the Middle East in general and Israel in=20
particular. European coordination has become especially important because=20
the nature of U.S. involvement in the region as of January 21, when George=
=20
W. Bush's presidency commences, is unknown.=20=20
During discussions in Europe, Ben-Ami was asked to raise ideas involving=20
Europe, which stands behind America's peace initiative, as well as behind=20
Israel and the peace process. Ben-Ami believes that Europe's social-
democratic leaders must convene to discuss leading the peace process and=20
the transfer of money to the Middle East. "Europe could lead in solving the=
=20
refugee issue. This is a central stepping stone in the peace process," Ben-
Ami said. He added, "There will eventually be an international force in the=
=20
region, and a mechanism for implementing the agreements will be=20
necessary. All of this can be international."=20=20
Ben-Ami's actions were intended to make possible a continuation of the=20
peace process after the American leadership changes, although he believes=20
that maximum efforts should be made to achieve an agreement before U.S.=20
President Bill Clinton leaves office. "We are obligated both politically an=

morally to make an effort to finish the process before the end of Clinton's=
=20
term. There is a time limit that we must be aware of. We always had the end=
=20
of Clinton's term as a goal," said Ben-Ami and added, "I don't think that=20
Israel needs to give up if an agreement is not reached by January 20. There=

Syria joins Iraq, Iran against Israel

WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Be careful what you wish for. You might get
it.
For years, if not decades, many U.S. and Israeli foreign policy columnists
regularly lamented that only the "lack of vision" -- or courage, or anything
you want to imagine -- of Syrian President Hafez Assad was preventing Syria
taking the "historic opportunity" of making peace with Israel.
Last year, tough old Assad, who had held Syria in an iron grip for a full
30 years, finally died, to be succeeded by his mild-mannered,
Western-educated son Bashar, an eye-doctor by profession and an
enthusiastic
exponent of the economic wonders of the Internet.
Surely, progressive, forward-looking young Bashar, so many of the Western
experts and columnists said, would abandon the repressive, paranoid old
ways
of his father and lead his country out into a bold new era of engagement
with the outside world.
And indeed, he has.
But not the way they expected.
Bashar has launched a new era of Syrian foreign policy all right, but one
that is on a collision course for war, not peace, with Israel; for
confrontation, not engagement, with the United States; and for close
military cooperation with Saddam Hussein in neighboring Iraq, not rejection
of him.
Commercial air links are being resumed between Damascus and Baghdad
for
the first time in nearly 20 years. Iraq has responded by giving Iran
permission to over-fly its territory when sending air shipments of arms and
ammunition to the Iran and Syrian-backed Hezbollah (Party of God) Shiite
militia in southern Lebanon.
Bashar, Middle East intelligence sources told UPI, played the key role in
brokering this agreement.
They also said that Bashar is working hard to achieve a rapprochement
between historic enemies Iraq and Iran. Between 1980 and 1988 they fought
the bloodiest war in modern Middle East history in which half a million
people, at least three-quarters of them Iranians, died.
Bashar has even given the go-ahead for close military cooperation with
Iraq. This involves, the sources said, joint planning for a coordinated
response in the event of war with Israel.
Iraq has moved one of its few and precious armored division in recent
weeks to the border with Syria, not to threaten Syria, but to be able to
respond quickly in support of Damascus if hostilities erupt between Syria
and the Jewish state. Late last year, Syria and Iraq, with no publicity,
held joint military maneuvers, the first in their modern history.
The new spirit of cooperation extends to economic affairs as well.
Iraq and Syria hope this month or next to reopen a major oil pipeline from
the northern Iraqi oil fields through Syrian territory to the Lebanese
Mediterranean port of Tripoli. It has not been used since 1982. Already,
Syrian and Iraqi technicians are at work on the pipeline. In fact, Iraqi oil
is already being refined in the Syrian city of Banias, the Middle East
sources said.
Bashar, one of the Middle East intelligence sources said, "has definitely
embraced" a radically new concept for Syria. He has clearly approved a new
strategic doctrine of cooperation with Iraq, Syria's historic regional
rival, as well as with Iran, to create a powerful regional block of Iran,
Iraq and Syria opposed to Israel and the United States.
This move is a radical reversal of the cautious policies of Bashar's
father for a full 30 years. Hafez Assad fought two fierce wars with Israel
within six years. First, he directed Syrian forces in the 1967 Six day War,
when he was Syria's minister of defense. Then, as president, he launched
the
1973 Yom Kippur War, when his tough, massive tank army caught the
Israelis
by surprise and nearly swept them off the Golan Heights and across the
Galillee to the Mediterranean before being held and rolled back.
But after that, Assad followed a policy of more than 25 years of trying to
avoid any outright direct conflict with the Israeli Army. Since the 1975
Israeli-Syrian disengagement agreement, not a single Israeli soldier or
settler on Golan has been killed by direct Syrian action. In fact, Hafez
Assad's greatest enemies were two fellow revolutionary Arab leaders of his
own generation, Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman Yasser Arafat
and
President Saddam Hussein of neighboring Iraq. Syria and Iraq have always
been rivals for the leadership of the Arab world, especially in the Fertile
Crescent region they share. But ideological rivalries over the past 40 years
have made things far worse. Both Saddam and Hafez Assad claimed to
preside
over the only true, ideologically pure regime of Baathism, or Arab
Socialism.
Hafez Assad always deeply distrusted and feared Saddam. Iraq has almost
double Syria's population and vast oil wealth. When the United States
mobilized a vast coalition and assembled a huge army of 700,000 men to roll
Iraq out off Kuwait in the 1991 Gulf War, Hafez Assad joined them.
Reversing this historic policy carries enormous risks for Bashar Assad.
But it has major attractions to him as well.
The main risks are that he could blunder into a major war with israel and
that this time, unlike 1967 and 1973, Syria could be totally smashed. Then
Bashar's Baathist regime, dominated by the Assad family's own Alawi
religious sect concentrated around the mountainous western Syrian city of
Latakia, could be swept from power. Or, by allowing the Iraqi military and
security services to operate freely in Syria -- a policy that was anathema
to his father -- Bashar could leave himself vulnerable to being toppled and
killed in a coup plot orchestrated by Saddam.
But with all its risks, the policy of strategic alliance with Iraq also
has many advantages for Bashar.
It is popular with the hawkish Alawite Baathists who dominate Syria's army
and security services. They are filled with frustration at their inability
to win a chance for military revenge against Israel, Middle East
intelligence source say. And they are strongly supportive of this policy.
Also, having been raised from childhood on the radical, anti-American
ideology of Baathism, they want to expel the United States and its allies
from the region, not come to terms with them.
A strong anti-U.S. and anti-Israel policy is also popular with Syria's
Sunni Muslim majority, especially the radical fundamentalists among them.
Hafez Assad slaughtered at least 10,000 of these people - possibly as many
as 30,000 -- along with their families in 1982 when he used tanks and heavy
artillery to literally flatten the city of Hama when it was in a state of
insurrection, controlled by the Ikhwan, or Muslim Brotherhood.
Now Bashar, like his father before him, must take especial pains not to
offend Muslim religious leaders, especially radical ones, to avoid reopening
that deadly old feud.
Finally, the policy of going radical and lining up with Saddam is also
popular with Iran, which now fears the United States far more than it fears
Iraq. It is also welcome to Hezbollah.
If Bashar instead had sought peace with Israel and closer ties with the
United States, he would have risked being undermined, or even assassinated
by Hezbollah and the Iranians.
In many respects, Bashar's policy is a product of weakness, not strength.
Hafez Assad was strong enough to keep Saddam at arms length. Bashar is
not.
Hafez was strong enough to resist calls for a more radical, but risky policy
towards Israel from his own generals and security chiefs. The young,
inexperienced Bashar cannot afford to alienate them. Hafez could defy Iran
on occasion. Bashar does not yet dare to.
For decades, U.S. and Israel analysts complained about Hafez Assad's
supposedly baleful influence in the Middle East. Very soon, they may have
cause to wish it was still there.

Iraq ready to take on Israel, says Saddam
BAGHDAD (Iraq) -- Iraqi President Saddam Hussein said on Thursday that
his people were ready to 'liberate' Palestine from the Israelis and fight once
more against the United States.
'The Iraqi people are dying to fight, and it's not just Saddam Hussein but
seven million Iraqis who have volunteered, who want to fight to liberate
Palestine,' President Saddam told a group of Arab artists.
'The Iraqi people are ready to fight the Americans and those who fight
alongside the Americans,' he added, in remarks broadcast over state
television.
'Israelis aren't able to resist the Arabs. They are not able to resist Arab
countries or even one sole country,' he said, adding that the Iraqi people
were 'determined to face' the UN embargo in place against Iraq since its
1990 invasion of Kuwait.
The television showed images of Saddam Hussein greeting and chatting with
the Syrian actress Raghda and the Egyptian actor Mohamed Sobhi, who is
in Baghdad to present an anti-US play.
It was the second straight night of state television broadcasts of Saddam
Hussein, after Iraqi opposition groups alleged the Iraqi leader was seriously ill
or dead.
Earlier, Iraqi Defence Minister General Sultan Hashem Ahmad said that his
country was ready to take on Israel in the event of a Middle East war and did
not rule out a new confrontation with Washington.
He said that 'a surprise attack is possible at any time,' especially as Iraq
was embroiled in almost daily clashes with US and British warplanes which
enforce 'no-fly' zones over most of the country.
'The Iraqi army, which is at the head of the armies in the region, is capable of
facing up to the US military technology,' Mr Hashem told the Iraqi weekly Al-
Zawra.
Turning to Israel, Mr Hashem said that if the Jewish states 'ventures' to start
a war in case of a total collapse of the US-sponsored Middle East peace
process, 'the Iraqi leadership will send troops to defend the Arabs.'
'We are ready to execute the orders of our command at any time and have
taken the necessary measures to support our Arab brothers if they are the
target of aggression,' he said.
In a show of force almost 10 years after Iraq's ouster from Kuwait in the 1991
Gulf War, the army staged a huge military parade on Dec 31.
The parade was trumpeted as a show of support for the Palestinians in their

In this issue of the Last Trumpet Newsletter, we will use the Word of
Almighty God as we look ahead into what is truly the first year of the new
millennium. The year 2001 will be an ominous year, and there is a great
foreboding already on the horizon. It is a year of intensified occultism and
witchery as Satan knows that his time is short, and witchcraft is his means
of communicating his will to his people. Satan is a defeated enemy, but he
does temporarily have a residual kingdom, which encompasses the vast
majority of the people of the world, who blindly follow the Illuministic
leaders in willing ignorance. We must remember that there was a time in this
world when the majority of the people were sane, and the insane were a
minuscule minority. That condition is now reversed in these last days
according to the second Scripture verse above, which warns of entire nations
becoming engulfed in madness. The gross appetites for sex, violence, blood,
witchcraft, new age occultism, Eastern religion, the metaphysical, and such
things indicate clearly that we are in such a time. People who have such
appetites and make a reality out of that kind of a world have surrendered to
a moral bankruptcy and have become Satanic citizens of a world that cannot
exist for long because the dynamics of God's judgement are already set in
motion to destroy it.
We must remember that the legal definition of insanity is the inability to
cope with reality. The reality is that we live in a created world, which
belongs to the Almighty God. It is a world filled with design, which proves
beyond question that there is a designer. This Creator and Designer also
provided a plan of salvation for us, so that when He returns to this wicked
world filled with people who insanely refuse to cope with the reality that
they are sinners, we who do believe will be saved from the destruction that
is imminent. Reality is the need to repent, and insanity is the denial of
that need and the refusal to do it. Has the world gone mad? Let us now look
and examine this illuminized and deranged world.
Election By Conspiracy!
We now have a new President-Elect, but who elected him? Never in the
history
of our country have we had a presidential election like the recent one. The
election was held and nobody won! Almost five weeks went by, and it was
going nowhere. It was exactly 33 days after election day when the matter was
turned over to the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. We know that the
number
33 is the supreme number in the Luciferian Masonic Lodge. We must also
remember that this is the same Supreme Court that refused to attend
President Clinton's State of the Union Address last year. For the first time
in history, every member made an excuse and refused to attend.
On December 11 as the last full moon of the twentieth rose over Washington,
D.C., the Supreme Court weighed the situation in the balances and
announced
their decision shortly thereafter. In the doctrine of witchcraft, they had
to wait for this last full or ovulating moon of the year. The lunar shadow
had to cross the Washington Monument or obelisk and extend over the
reflecting pool and to the Capitol building. To Christians, this is
ridiculous, but the Masons, witches, and Illuminists believe in it strongly.
This is their religion, and it explains a lot of things about why they do
what they do. Astrology is the timing system in the occult world, and one
cannot practice witchcraft without it.
There are other reasons why the Illuminati had to delay the election and
stall for time until after the full moon of December. These Masterminds of
the Great Illuminati Conspiracy are always seeking to please their god,
Lucifer, who is worshipped after the pattern of the ancient empires. They
were excited about the last full moon of the year falling on Monday, the day
of the moon. This was also 13 days before the eve of the resurrection day of
the sun god, which is the completion of the witches' sabat of Yule. December
25th is the day, according to the occult, when the sun god rises from the
dead after dying on Yule or December 22nd. On the eve of the sun god's
resurrection or December 24, there is a special celebration among the
witches to honor the rising sun god, which makes the daylight increase. Does
this sound insane? It is reality to them!
Another strange excitement was generated regarding the full moon of
December
because it occurred on the 11th day. The eleventh sign of the zodiac in
their timing system of astrology is the sign of Aquarius, which is the sign
of their "new age." Perhaps you remember the song by the "Fifth Dimension"
called "Aquarius." They sang it out loud and clear, "This is the dawning of
the Age of Aquarius." That is why the number 11 is special to them. That is
also the reason why the armistice ending World War I was signed on the 11th
day of the 11th month at the 11th hour. You can check this in your
encyclopedia. It is the mark of the "New Age of Aquarius."
It is also interesting to note that the inauguration or swearing-in ceremony
is held on the 20th of January. In astrology and related occultism, which is
the religion that runs the U.S. Government, the 20th day of each month
marks
the entrance of each sign of the zodiac. January 20th, the day of
inauguration, is the first day of the sign of Aquarius, which is also the
name of their new age. The word "inaugurate" comes from classical Latin and
the ancient Roman empire. In ancient Rome, there was a strange clan of
fortune tellers called augurers, who practiced witchcraft and divination.
The word "inaugurate" literally means "to take omens." (1) Traditionally,
the inauguration or taking of omens was held on the East Front side of the
Capitol building. In 1981, it was moved to the West Front of the Capitol
(2), which means the one taking the omens now faces the Egyptian obelisk,
known as the Washington Monument. Thus, the Washington Monument
becomes the
pinnacle of orientation as you look eastward from it toward the West Front
of our Nation's Capitol. Orientation means "alignment with the East", and
this change was effected in 1981, because it was a signal to every
conspirator that the nation was now completely taken over by infiltration.
Every President from Ronald Reagan through Bill Clinton has faced the
Washington-Egyptian Obelisk while taking omens. Thus, straight east of
Baal's shaft is the portico where the President stands. I personally stood
there with my wife and a friend with special permission from the Capitol
police, and I can tell you that there is a very evil presence on that very
spot. God's Spirit was greatly stirred within me. Very soon, on January 20th
as the sign of Aquarius rises, George W. Bush is scheduled to face the shaft
of Baal and take the omens of office.
The Rising Beast!
While violence continues in the Middle East, the Illuminists are making
final plans for "globalization" or the age-old plot of one-world government.
Referring to the Middle East, Russian President Vladimir Putin recently
stated, "We are on the verge of a catastrophe." (3) Russia is beginning to
take a very active role in the Middle East situation, and a recent story in
the New York Post was headlined "Russia's Putin In New Effort To Kick-Start
Mideast Talks." (4) The United Nations is now proposing to step into the
picture. (5) Britain and France have jointly proposed to send in a 2,000
member protection force to maintain order in that blood-stained part of the
world. (6) Is this the powder keg that will be used to ignite the last war?
Meanwhile, the European Union met on December 7th at Nice, France, and
vowed
to get ready for enlargement to nearly double in size. (7) With a target
date of 2003, the European Union is planning to take in 13 new members.
The
excited leaders of the EU said that the acceptance of the former communist
countries of Eastern and Western Europe, Cyprus, Malta, and Turkey bring
forth "the realization of a dream to unite the continent." (8) German
Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder declared,"Europe must not remain divided." (9)
The Masterminds of the Illuminati conspiracy are working at break-neck
speed
to unify nations, and the unification of all of Europe into one nation is a
quantum leap in the age-old plot.
President Clinton has been spending his final days of his second term as
President to further the cause of unification into a "new world order." On
November 18th, President Clinton, Hillary, and Chelsea were in communist
Vietnam where they were said to be a "big hit in Hanoi." (10) Why wouldn't
they be a big hit when people after their own heart would come to their
country? Commissar Clinton stood under a bust of Ho Chi Minh and made a
speech in which he mentioned the "staggering sacrifice made by the
Vietnamese. (11) The speech went on as the massive crowds clapped their
hands and cheered him on. Clinton also said, "We do not seek to impose
democracy on the country, and only you can decide how to weave individual
liberties and human rights into the rich and strong fabric of Vietnamese
national identity." He also praised Hanoi and called for "a new chapter in
our relationship." (12) I couldn't help but wonder how the many thousands of
American veterans laying in hospitals, including others who having missing
arms and legs and other problems, felt about the "Commander-in-Chief"
standing under Ho Chi Minh and praising these Communists! God help us!
Where
is the outcry? It is all being done in the name of new world order.
The Tightening Grip Of Illuministic Technology!
As we draw ever closer to the end of this age, we see the powers of darkness
increasing their activities in the use of high technology for the purpose of
control over all of humanity. The 60 billion dollar international space
station, which is now orbiting our planet, is one such Illuminati endeavor.
The conspirators are rushing like mad to complete this space station, and
shuttle after shuttle has been sent up to work on it. It is such a beehive
of activity up there that the U.S. space shuttle "Endeavor" experienced a
traffic jam in space. Two Russian spacecraft were already docked at the
space station, and one had to be removed and parked in orbit so the
Endeavor
could dock with this Luciferian outpost in space. (13) The space shuttle
"Endeavor" docked at the 13 story space station 13 days before the witches's
sabat of Yule or winter solstice. (14) As the astronauts tried to work on th
e space station and attempted to install solar panels, everything began to
go wrong. Computer commands brought no response, and folded panels
failed to
open. One space-walking astronaut developed a painful eye irritation and had
to stop working. (15) After working with continual trouble for 13 hours,
ground control and astronauts began to swear at each other and were
described as being frustrated and sarcastic. (16) It is increasingly obvious
that the Almighty is not pleased with this occultic space station, and we
know that there problems are just beginning, especially because there are
people praying against their conspiratorial activities.
On earth, the "big brother" beast system is watching and listening as the
tightening tentacles of Illuministic micro-management squeeze out the last
remaining vestiges of privacy. We have now learned that 50,000 new cell
phone towers are being built in America's wilderness areas. (17) All
airspace must be covered for surveillance purposes, and there is nothing
easier for big brother to tap into than cell phones. The beast government
will always try to pedal their ideas as good for the public, and many people
ignorantly buy into that lie. A prime example of that is the acceptance of
the new global positioning satellite systems being installed in automobiles
"for the good and safety of the driver." It is amazing to see how willing
people are to connect their automobiles to a global positioning satellite in
space. As mentioned in a previous newsletter, the state of Wisconsin and
several other states are planning to do away with the gasoline tax and
instead install electronic boxes in automobiles to record how much they are
driven. A tax bill for the distance driven will be sent to the owner of the
vehicle by a computer that is connected to the satellite that was monitoring
the car. Some vehicle manufacturers have already built such devices into
their cars. In some systems, there is the capability of your car being
unlocked from space if you are locked out.
On November 21, 2000, a program aired on WHAD radio in Delafield,
Wisconsin,
revealed that the new electronic boxes that would be installed in all
registered automobiles would record more than just the distance driven. The
satellite and its computers would also constantly record speed, the number
of times brakes were applied, the route driven, and the radio station that
the driver is listening to. (18) There was a time when you could find
privacy for conversation by going for a ride in your car. Those days will
soon be gone if something does not happen quickly. They will no doubt have
the capability to hear you as the computer will be programmed to respond to
certain key words. Remember, the symbol of the Illuminati from its inception
has been the all-seeing eye. We must also remember that prayer works. "The
effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." James 5:16. It
is not difficult to get answers to prayer; it is only difficult to get
people to pray. Do it!
In another amazing story, we have learned that roadside DNA tests on
subjects are planned in Britain. No doubt they will soon do this on citizens
in this country. Drivers who are stopped by police could be asked to supply
on-the-spot hair or saliva samples to identify whether they are wanted
criminals. Government scientists have developed a hand-held DNA testing kit,
which police officers will carry and operate while on normal patrols. The
device will be electronically linked to the national DNA database. Prime
Minister Tony Blair stated, "This is an essential tool in the fight against
crime." (19) Forensic scientists have stated that they will be able to use a
single hair sample to discover a suspect's eye color, facial
characteristics, height, and weight. (20) The police have already collected
almost a million samples from convicted criminals, and they are now lobbying
for the law to be changed to allow expansion of the database to include
innocent people who volunteer to take part in mass screenings. (21) What
will it take to wake people up? Privacy is something that cannot be
tolerated in the new world order and age of Aquarius. May God bring it
quickly to an end!
Human Specimens & Population Reduction!
These truly are the last days as all of the signs including the rapid
expansion of evil are abounding everywhere. We know that one of the prime
objectives of the Illuminists is to reduce the population of the world by
every means possible. In Australia, drug and medical errors are now killing
1 out of 5 people being treated. (22) According to the British Medical
Journal, Ron Law of New Zealand's Ministry of Health Working Group stated,
"Put another way, more than 5 million people have been killed by Western
medical practice in the past decade (Europe, USA, Canada, Australia, and
New
Zealand) and 20 million permanently maimed." Mr. Law also asked the
question, "Sounds like a war zone doesn't it?" (23)
In the United States, the abortion pill, RU-486, has now been shipped in
large amounts to doctors and clinics. This baby-killing drug, called
mifepristone, is manufactured by Danco Laboratories of New York, and by the
list of side effects, one can quickly see how dangerous it is to the
would-be mother as well as being deadly to the child. Heather O'Neill, a
spokeswoman for Danco Laboratories, said, "It is extremely
gratifying....we've gotten a tremendous amount of interest and we are
prepared to meet the demand." (24) The side effects of the three-step
process include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and chills. (25) Why is
there such a reaction? Why shouldn't there be when a human execution of an
innocent baby is taking place inside the murdering would-be mother? The real
problem will be faced on judgement day, and that day will surely come!
On December 11 at the time of the full moon, the International Planned
Parenthood Federation (IPPF) received 8.8 million dollars from the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation. (26) It is all being done in the spirit of the new
world order.
In another shocking story, the French judicial system has ruled that a boy
born with defects can sue the doctors for not aborting him. (27) The French
high court ruled that the doctors and lab should have prevented the birth of
Nicolas Perruche, who was born deaf, part-blind, and with mental
disabilities in 1983. (28) God help us!
If it isn't one outrageous thing, it is another, and the reason that all of
this is happening is because these are the last days. We who are Christians
should rejoice because our redemption draweth nigh. At the same time, our
hearts are heavy because of the mass-rejection of the Lord Jesus and the
acceptance of the lies, deceits, and temptations of Satan.
More Witchcraft & Blasphemy!
The appetite for witchcraft, superstition, the weird and the bizarre is ever
increasing. Here let it be noted that witches regard Britain as their "holy
land." They believe that areas such as Stonehenge and certain forests of
oaks are enchanted and sacred. According to an article which was clipped
from the London Daily Telegraph, which I have in front of me, there are over
120,000 pagans or practicing witches in Britain. (29) There is also an
organization called "The Pagan Federation", which says that its post bag is
swelling with inquiries from teenagers. (30) This is just as I predicted,
and it grieves my heart very much. When the teenage magazine "Bliss"
published an article on witchcraft, 1,000 letters arrived at the Pagan
Federation shortly thereafter. A teenage witch named Madeline Bourne, 17,
said, "It is a fun, joyful religion, a celebration of life, and there is no
such thing as sin."(30) That is one of the prime problems of these last
days; people do not believe sin is sin, and it is because of the strong
element of witchcraft doctrine that has filled our land. That is why the
Harry Potter books are so extremely dangerous; they teach the principles of
witchcraft to young impressionable minds, and every one of them should be
burned without the slightest hesitation.
Witchcraft gets plenty of publicity, and this year, the Radio 4 station of
the BBC has set aside eight and one-half hours of air time for an
uninterrupted reading of the first Harry Potter book. (31) This is to take
place as a holiday special for boxing day, a Yuletide celebration. To add
insult to injury, the BBC is also planning to air an "alternative nativity
play" on Christmas day, which is a gender switch entitled "It's a Girl." The
show has Joseph complaining that he has been blamed for the Virgin Mary's
pregnancy and saying that his mates had advised him to "dump her." (32) It
is amazing to me that anyone would be corrupt enough to be entertained by
such evil and blasphemy.
Meanwhile, the Church of England gave its blessing to "Rev. Peter Stone",
who recently returned to his church wearing a navy pencil skirt, floral
scarf, and black court shoes as the "Rev. Carol Stone." He was given 3
months leave of absence to undergo what the church called "gender
redesignation." I wouldn't want to hear any sermons by this "it." Sadly, all
but four members of the congregation welcomed their priest back as a
woman.
(33) Has the world gone mad? It would seem so, and if you read once again
the Scripture verses at the top of page one of this newsletter, you will see
that the Bible foretold us of this condition of latter day madness!
In another news release, the Roman Catholic Pope John Paul II issued a
statement saying, "Heaven is open to all as long as they are good." He went
on to say in an audience, "All of the just on Earth, including those who
ignore Christ and his Church, are called upon to build the Kingdom of God."
(34) I can tell you for sure that no one who ignores Christ is going to be
in His Kingdom!
Repentance Or Judgement!
One thing I know for sure is that you cannot continue to insult and
blaspheme God forever. You cannot lift evil up as good and flaunt wickedness
in the face of the Almighty. Sodom and Gomorrah, the great flood, and
numerous other acts of God's wrath are standing proof of that. This world is
a powder keg waiting to explode, and great trials and tribulations of such
great proportions that they cannot be ignored are soon to come. We have
been
seeing the warnings for some time, and people are so filled with lusts and
with themselves that they are oblivious to what the Lord is doing. On
November 30th, the tech stocks of Nasdaq plummeted in the worst Wall
Street
crash since 1987. It fell to less than half of its March record high. (35)
Wall Street is global and highly emotional, and when the Eternal One lifts
his hand against it, the fall will be devastating, and no one will stop it.
The earth continues to shake and rumble just as predicted in Matthew,
chapter 24. On November 25, 2000, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude
of
6.3 rocked Azeri near the Russian state of Georgia. (36) On December 16,
2000, another strong earthquake shook central Turkey and killed five
Moslems
praying in a mosque. (37) On that same day, Dec. 16th, 2000, on this side of
the world, crowds were fleeing from a volcano near Mexico City, which also
was causing numerous earthquakes in the area. The seismic activity was
called intense and unprecedented. (38) On that same day, Dec. 16th, 2000,
deadly tornados swept across Alabama causing death and injuries. The
twisters hit in the Tuscaloosa area, and the report says that homes and
other buildings were "smashed to kindling." (39) When things like this
happen, it should make us realize how fragile we are.
We are also experiencing record severe winter weather, and at the time of
this writing, winter has not even begun. Blizzards with wind chills of 50 to
75 below zero have stricken many parts of the United States. Vast amounts
of
snow have paralyzed many roadways, such as the closing down of 300 miles
of
interstate highway in Minnesota. It is all just beginning, and it is all in
the hands of our Almighty Saviour. If we pray from our hearts, he will
always hear a repenting voice.
In closing, I want to urge everyone to help us pray as we intercede
continually for a lost and dying generation. On Saturday night at 6:00 P.M.
Central Standard Time, we pray for the many people who write, fax, and call
us. Each request is prayed for individually by name. We care about you, and
we know the Lord does also. I also want to thank all of you who pray for us
and support this ministry. I pray that the Lord will bless you exceedingly!

Thanks so much for this newsletter! It talks of "population reduction" being a
part of the NWO plan . . . so I just have to comment on that. This "population
reduction" is being encouraged all around us here in the U.S. Have you eaten at
a restaurant in the past year? Everything is covered in bacon, cheese, and
mayonnaise. And the portions are huge.
My sons and I walked into a fast food chain today and read a sign posted on the
cash register that stated cheese is now included on all value meals -- if you
don't want it that way, you must say so when you place your order. Sure, maybe
none of this will kill you quickly, but it will altogether shorten your life and
cause misery along the way! I've been trying to figure out what's going on . . .
with all that we know about nutrition, why are the restaurants poisoning us this
way? Well, this e-mail certainly has provided an insight!

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) - The union representing three Northwest Airlines
baggage handlers who were videotaped playfully tossing mail into a
bin five days before Christmas blamed the incident on the airline's
outdated equipment. The International Association of Machinists has
already filed grievances against the airline for the resulting
suspensions of the handlers and disciplinary letters. Northwest
spokesman Jon Austin declined to comment Friday. The union is
angered by Northwest's use of so-called "cow pens" for holding mail
during the busy holiday season, said IAM District 143 President
Bobby De Pace.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A woman who strolled a town festival in a
Marilyn Manson T-shirt, then was convicted of harassment because of
its nasty language, won a reversal Friday from the Kentucky Court of
Appeals. A three-judge panel said it was throwing out the conviction
without getting into the case's free-speech issues. The law defines
harassment as a course of conduct intended to alarm or seriously
annoy others. "Wearing a T-shirt is not a course of conduct," the
judges said in their unanimous ruling. "A single act that annoys
another person simply is not harassment as defined by the statute,"
the opinion said. Venus Starlett Dust Morgan made headlines in 1998
when police cited her at Tater Days, an annual spring festival at
Benton. Authorities said women with young children complained about
Morgan's shirt, which bore a lyric from a song by the shock-rock
Manson band.

Friday in St. Peter's Square for their last chance for another 25
years to pass through the basilica's Holy Door. Pope John Paul II

Vatican's Jubilee Year celebration of Christianity's third
millennium. Friday's faithful were far luckier than the thousands
who stood the night before in a pouring, cold rain to reach the door
before it closed. Many doffed their coats in the brilliant morning
as they waited as long as four hours.

BEIT SAHOUR, West Bank (AP) - The shattered green pickup truck has
been hauled away, and the blood and scorch marks have faded from the
dirt track that runs past a little olive grove. On this spot, Israel
fired one of the first shots in an 8-week-old shadow war,
methodically targeting Palestinians it holds responsible for Israeli
deaths. Palestinians call it a campaign of assassination. Israel
says so-called pinpoint killings are a legitimate weapon in the
fight against terrorism. But now, for the first time, Israeli
critics are beginning to join Palestinians and human rights groups
in condemning the practice. Israel has a long and unapologetic
history of hunting down and killing those who stage terror attacks
against Israelis. Over the past two months, though, that tactic has
taken on a different twist with Israeli forces targeting leaders of
the uprising that began in late September in the West Bank and Gaza
Strip. Palestinians say more than a dozen leaders have been killed.

Iraq since scaling back relations with Baghdad following the 1991
Persian Gulf War, an official said Friday. The appointment is the
latest step in Turkey's policy of improving ties with Iraq, one of
its largest trading partners before the Gulf War. Mehmet Akad, a
diplomat serving at the Turkish embassy in Britain, will leave for
Baghdad shortly, Foreign Ministry spokesman Huseyin Dirioz said.
Last year, two Turkish planes landed in Baghdad carrying
humanitarian goods and business owners keen on clinching trade
deals.

*** Russians order discarding of Mir
MOSCOW (AP) - Russia's prime minister has signed a decree ordering
work to begin on a gradual lowering and discarding of the
15-year-old space station Mir, news reports said Friday. Russian
Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov ordered Russian space commanders to
ensure a "controlled de-orbiting and sinking" of the 140-ton space
ship in February or March, ITAR-Tass news agency reported, citing
Kasyanov's office. The decree also said a special commission will be
formed to oversee the work, according to the report. Kasyanov's
decree did not give the exact date for the planned descent, but
space officials have said earlier that they would launch a cargo
ship to push the Mir down in a controlled manner on Feb. 27-28. It
takes two days to reach the station from Earth. Space experts say
they would prefer to send a crew to ensure a trouble-free docking
with the cargo ship, but space officials still apparently hope to do
the job with an unmanned cargo vessel, to cut costs.

WASHINGTON (AP) - With the end in sight, President Clinton joined a
thousand or so members of his administration at a Washington rock
club for a party entitled, "I survived the Clinton White House."
Clinton said Americans may find some other president who does the
job better than he did but added, "I don't think they'll ever find
anybody who had as much fun doing it." The music was deafening
Thursday night at Nightclub 9:30, which boasts that its roster of
performers has included many stars of alternative rock. The
president and his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, showed up just
before 11 p.m. and stayed about 20 minutes. The guests were current
and former White House staff members and political appointees at
government agencies and departments. Most of them will lose their
jobs Jan. 20 when the Bush administration moves in. Guests left with
t-shirts imprinted with a picture of a roller coaster track
encircling the White House, reminiscent of the turbulent up-and-down
ride of Clinton's presidency.

Accents Banned as China Insists on "Emperor's Mandarin"
HONG KONG, Jan 5, 2001 -- (Agence France Presse) China has banned
radio and television presenters from speaking in anything other than standard
Mandarin, Hong Kong media reported Friday.
Under a new law that took effect on Monday the broadcasters will be taken
off air unless they stick to the Chinese equivalent of the Queen's English,
according to Fan Yumei, head of Beijing's commission for spoken and
written language.
Fan told the Sun daily it was also now an offense to put up billboard posters
containing spelling mistakes or grammatical errors.
The new media legislation is part of a drive by Beijing to impose a standard
form of Mandarin across all of China, where at least 76 languages are still
spoken by a diverse range of ethnic groups.
Under the new law, Mandarin Chinese and Chinese-simplified characters are
defined as the only legal national spoken and written language. Any
broadcaster found to be using incorrect phonetics, syntax or grammar could
