I want to thank everyone on David's behalf for the encouragement and prayers
that are being said for his newborn son. Several people have written to me
saying they are praying for Matthew. I'm sure many others on the list are
praying as well. I will be sure to let everyone know of Matthew's progress
when I hear from David next time.

God bless you folks,

'No king but Jesus'
by Joseph Farah
=A9 2001 WorldNetDaily.com=20

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=3D21482

Have you noticed what critics of John Ashcroft cite as the core of=20
their concerns about the attorney general nominee?=20

It's a quote from him in which he proclaims he serves "no king but=20
Jesus."=20

Actually, in context, Ashcroft said this: "A slogan of the American=20
Revolution was the line, 'We have no king but Jesus.'"=20

That is 100 percent accurate. Colonial America rebelled against=20
paying tribute to King George, saying they had "no king but Jesus."=20

It was not only a slogan of the War for Independence, it was the=20
cornerstone of the philosophy that led to the Constitution, with its=20
concepts of a limited federal government and separation of powers.=20

So, understanding the history and context of this quotation, why=20
would Ashcroft's critics zero in on such a seemingly non-
controversial remark?=20

One of the architects of the secular smear campaign against Ashcroft=20
is Barry Lynn of Americans United for Separation of Church and State.=20
He characterized the "Jesus" line as "totally unacceptable." He was=20
joined in knee-jerk fashion by Abraham Foxman of the Anti-
Discrimination League who called upon Ashcroft to assure Americans=20
that his "religious beliefs would not dictate" how he would carry out=20
his job.=20

Since then, newspaper reporters and commentators around the country=20
have seized on this comment as if it were the smoking gun that proved=20
Ashcroft unfit for the job of attorney general.=20

What is so threatening to Americans about this statement? Do they=20
think we serve a king in this country? Is that what the federal=20
government has become? Or, worse, is this attack on Ashcroft's belief=20
an attempt to disqualify him because of his traditional Christian=20
religious beliefs?=20

Not only did this slogan, "No king but Jesus," in many ways, inspire=20
the American vision of freedom and self-government, it is a slogan=20
with a history that goes back to the First Century church.=20

Let me remind you of this history.=20

Why were the early Christians crucified by Rome? Why were they fed to=20
the lions in the Colosseum? Why were the Christians the major target=20
of persecution by the caesars?=20

The answer is simple and self-evident: Because they recognized no=20
king but Jesus.=20

That simple idea was so threatening to the caesars that Christians=20
paid for it with their lives -- by the hundreds of thousands. This=20
was the second holocaust of the modern era -- the first being the=20
sacking of Jerusalem in 70 AD. And no one knows for sure just how=20
many Christians were put to death. There are historical descriptions=20
of Roman roadways being lighted by night by the burning corpses of=20
crucified Christians -- all because they would serve no king but=20
Jesus.=20

There are also historical depictions of Christians saying, "No king=20
but Jesus" as they were herded into the arena to be torn limb from=20
limb by animals.=20

As the Ashcroft opponents in the U.S. Senate do their best to stall=20
confirmation of their former colleague, ask yourself about their=20
motivations.=20

What they are really suggesting is that no serious, committed=20
Christian, who, by definition, puts Jesus first in his life, is fit=20
to serve in high office in Washington.=20

That's what is at stake in this confirmation process -- nothing more,=20
nothing less. This is a U.S. Senate and media referendum on anti-
Christian bigotry. How far has it gone? Too far.=20

Let's face it. If you take Ashcroft's religious beliefs out of the=20
equation, he sails through the confirmation process. There's no=20
serious debate. What is holding this up is a desperate search by his=20
radical secular opponents for "more dirt." They can't stand the idea=20
of a praying, reverent, pious man in the office formerly occupied by=20
a lawless, shameless figure who served her earthly king -- Clinton --=20
faithfully and, when necessary, violently.=20

I'll tell you what's at stake in the Ashcroft nomination, besides=20
truth, justice and the rule of law. What's at stake is the notion=20
that there is no religious test in America. That is one of the=20
founding principles. That is what drove the first successful=20
colonists to the New World. Ashcroft's opponents are no better than=20
the persecutors in Europe that drove pilgrims to seek out a land=20
where freedom of conscience was respected. And, in many ways, whether=20
they would admit it or not, they may be leading us back to the fears,=20
hatreds and passions of the Roman Colosseum.=20

Inaugural Intruder Credits God
Minister Offered President Medallion, Spiritual Boost

By David Montgomery and Arthur Santana
Washington Post Staff Writers
Friday, January 26, 2001; Page B01

http://washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A48804-2001Jan25.html

The Secret Service and the U.S. Capitol Police were no match for God,
said the Rev. Richard C. "Rich" Weaver, the mysterious handshake man
who stepped forward yesterday and credited the Lord with getting him
into a restricted area so he could accost President Bush and give him
a spiritual pep talk on Inauguration Day.

It was the same stunt he pulled four years ago at President Bill
Clinton's second inauguration, only this time the U.S. Capitol Police
and the Secret Service were on the lookout for him. In preparation
for Saturday's festivities -- where law enforcement agencies said
security was the tightest ever for an inauguration -- the Capitol
Police had shown officers a video of Weaver's handshake with Clinton
so he could be easily recognized.

"The guards let me in like nobody's business," said Weaver, 55, a
nondenominational Christian minister. "It happens all the time. It's
so funny, it's almost eerie. But this stuff is no big deal to God.
God can close people's eyes so they don't see you."

The president of the Spiritual Revolution Through Christ Inc. outside
Sacramento said he has been able to meet presidents and other
politicians, celebrities and athletes over the last 25 years. He said
he does it to provide spiritual guidance, so that they might be role
models for young people.

Weaver, who is jovial and energetic in person, was already pursuing
his Christian mission in the early 1970s when, as a campus
evangelist, he was active in the "Jesus Revolution" in California,
according to contemporary news accounts. A knowledgeable source said
the Secret Service has had dealings with him on three occasions,
including one prior to Clinton's second inauguration that the source
declined to specify.

Spokesmen for the Capitol Police and Secret Service remained tight-
lipped about the embarrassing "unscheduled handshake," saying the
release of details would compromise security. Because the intruder
committed no crime, the agencies also withheld his identity. A source
familiar with the incident confirmed that Weaver was the intruder.

Former Secret Service director Eljay Bowron said Weaver's casual
demeanor when he walked up to Bush may have prevented alarms from
going off among agents. "Obviously, in an ideal world for the Secret
Service, this wouldn't have happened," said Bowron, who saw a video
clip of the incident. "I'm sure that they feel embarrassed."

Bowron, who was director from 1993 to 1997 and oversaw Clinton's
second inauguration, said he vaguely remembers Weaver approaching
Clinton. He described him as a familiar type known to agents as
a "nuisance approacher" rather than a physical threat.

"If they were going to worry about each one of those individually,
they'd have to put a fence around the whole city," said Bowron,
executive vice president of the Vance International security firm in
Oakton.

The Washington Post interviewed Weaver yesterday by telephone and in
person in a suburb of Sacramento, where he was also photographed.

Weaver said he had a blue ticket for standing room at the swearing-
in, which would have required him to pass through a checkpoint but
not a metal detector.

Later, Weaver and law enforcement sources said, he passed through a
checkpoint with a metal detector leading into a restricted section of
the Capitol grounds.

Weaver said he wandered into the Capitol and mixed with members of
Congress and other VIPs before going outside and meeting Bush.

The 15-second encounter was captured on videotape shown on television
programs Wednesday. The scene is striking. Weaver strides up to Bush,
shakes his hand and gives him something (identified by the White
House as a medallion). Bush tries to move away, and Weaver touches
the president's right elbow. Weaver reaches into his pocket and pulls
out something that resembles a camera.

Afterward, Weaver said, Secret Service agents took him into the
Capitol and asked how he got so close. The agents "are the most
awesome people I've seen anyplace in the country, and I've dealt with
them several times," Weaver said yesterday.

While under questioning, he feared that the agents might feel they
had failed in their jobs. He tried to buck them up: " 'It had nothing
to do with you. God's bigger than all you guys,' " he recalled
saying. "It really encourages them when I tell them that."

Weaver offered this account of how he got so close to Bush. Capitol
Police and Secret Service officials declined to confirm any detail
except the handshake.

It started three weeks before the inauguration when Weaver felt a
strong inner sense that God wanted him to deliver a message to George
W. Bush. He typed it on a blue card, which he then laminated: "Your
miracle election is to remind you to stand for Christ daily without
political compromise. Keep Christ first and God will give you another
miracle election in four years."

He brought the card and a medallion with an image of former president
George Bush on it. Weaver said the elder Bush had given two such
medallions to him at a reception at Ronald Reagan's first
inauguration, when he said he also met the younger Bush.

On the morning of Inauguration Day, Weaver said, he got a blue
standing-room ticket from a woman who had an extra one. He saw a
group of men who looked important, and he overheard one saying he
knew a special entrance. Weaver fell in with the group as it entered
the Capitol grounds.

He asked a guard where a bathroom was and was directed through a
metal detector. He now found himself in a VIP area. He took a seat 20
rows away from Bush to hear the inaugural address. Afterward, he
walked into the Capitol, then upstairs. An officer challenged him. He
said he only wanted to find an exit. The guard escorted him down in
an elevator and directed him to a door.

Weaver stepped outside to find himself near the president.

After handing over the medal and card and telling Bush that Jesus
loves him, Weaver reached into his pocket for something else. "That
was my camera," he said. "I was going to take a picture of him. I
decided that wasn't too appropriate."

Jim Mackin, a spokesman for the Secret Service, emphasized that
Weaver passed through a metal detector.

Pressed about the harm Weaver still could have inflicted, Mackin
said: "There are other measures I can't elaborate on, but I certainly
understand the questions being raised. . . . In answering some of
these questions, we would lend assistance to this happening again."

A retired Secret Service agent who once protected President Ronald
Reagan said agents are trained not only to protect the president's
life but also to protect his dignity.

"You don't want to embarrass the protectee. That's a big issue in
your training," said the former agent, who asked not to be
identified. "You could lose your job if you just dove in front of
someone who looked like they shouldn't be there but turned out to be
the president's old friend who forgot his pass. That man with
President Bush looked like he belonged there."

The former agent said it was not a surprise that the interloper did
not get into legal trouble. The same thing has happened before. "If
we charge him with something, it would only blow it up," the former
agent said. "We just want to get it over with and get him out of
there."

MORE THAN 1,000 FEARED DEAD IN INDIAN QUAKE
More than 700 people died when a powerful earthquake rocked western
India on Friday and officials feared the toll could rise above a
thousand as rescue workers searched for survivors buried under
debris. The earthquake, measured at 7.9 on the Richter scale by the
U.S. Geological Survey, was the most intense to hit India in half a
century and struck early in the morning. It sent tremors across the
country and into neighboring Pakistan, toppling buildings in towns
across the state of Gujarat.

BUSH TO PROPOSE FEDERAL AID FOR FAITH-BASED CHARITIES
President Bush, working down his list of campaign promises, will
offer Congress next week his proposals to aid faith-based charities
and his plan to help the elderly meet the high costs of prescription
drugs, aides said Thursday. White House press secretary Ari
Fleischer, who previewed next week's agenda, noted that Mr. Bush had
made his faith-based initiatives a cornerstone of his campaign and
was determined to offer his proposals to Congress early in his

U.S. QUARANTINES TEXAS CATTLE OVER MAD COW RULES
U.S. regulators said on Thursday they had placed some cattle in Texas
under quarantine as a precaution while officials probe whether a feed
mill violated rules designed to keep mad cow disease out of the food
supply. A Food and Drug Administration spokesman (FDA) said the
agency was investigating whether the cattle were accidentally fed
meat and bone meal made from other U.S. cattle.

U.S. RESTRICTIONS STOP ARROW PRODUCTION PROJECT
State Department restrictions have foiled an Israeli effort to find a
U.S. partner for the production and export project of the Arrow
missile defense system. Negotiations with three U.S. companies
approached by Israel have ended in failure. The development
jeopardizes Israel's plans to coproduce and export the joint U.S.-
Israeli system and has prompted calls for Israel to take over the
project itself.

CHINA DEMANDS U.S. STOP 'INTERFERING' ON HUMAN RIGHTS
China yesterday lashed out at U.S. criticism of its treatment of the
Falun Gong spiritual movement, calling remarks by the Bush
administration "totally unacceptable." A day after new Secretary of
State Colin Powell put Beijing on notice that the United States will
continue to speak "frankly" about China's human rights record, a
senior Chinese official said the Falun Gong comments could harm
relations between the two countries.

DALAI LAMA CONDEMNS CHRISTIANS, MUSLIMS

Muslim and Christian practice of actively seeking converts. "Whether
Hindu or Muslim or Christian, whoever tries to convert, it's wrong,

THE WALLS OF JERICHO: THE REALLY DID COME TUMBLIN' DOWN
Jericho was once thought to be a `Bible problem' because of the

Attacks on Christians worry US Senator
Thursday 4 January 2001

http://www.timesofindia.com/040101/04indi8.htm

The Times of India News Service

NEW DELHI: Senior Republican Senator Arlen Specter is doing the rounds in
New Delhi. He has already met foreign secretary Lalit Mansingh and is
scheduled to meet external affairs minister Jaswant Singh on Thursday. An
appointment with Prime Minister Vajpayee is also on the cards, though so far
confirmation has not come from the PMO.

Pennsylvania's Senator Specter is the first Republican in town since George
Bush was declared the winner in the Presidential elections. The interest in
his interpretation of his party's views are of much interest in New Delhi.
However, the Senator is a moderate Republican and has liberal views on many
issues.

Specter is worried about the increasing attacks on Christians in democratic
India. In fact, Specter mentioned his concern to Mansingh. He was told the
attacks were limited to outlying provinces and that the Prime Minister
himself had condemned such incidents in his `Musings.'

Specter said he will take this up when he speaks to Jaswant Singh and others
while here. The Bush administration is likely to appoint an ambassador for
Religious Freedom.

The Clinton administration had also been privately raising the issue with
India. Washington realised that publicly talking about this will needlessly
raise temperatures of Hindu hard-liners and make things even more difficult
for the Christians.

In fact, an Indian official, familiar with Washington politics said that
issues of non-proliferation and other known differences between India and
the US, could be tackled amicably. However if churches continued to be a
target and Christian minorities were attacked, it could damage relations
with the US. The Christian-right within the Republican ranks is assertive
and is likely to be more so with George Bush at the helm.

The Senator is worried about human rights not just in India but also in
China.``I am for human rights,'' he asserted and believes that China should
be pulled up on its rights record. He says sanctions could be used
effectively as leverage by the US against China for passing on nuclear
technology to Pakistan . Specter is an activist on human rights and believes
that Washington must not turn a blind eye to rights violations.

He is also one of the few Republicans who went along with the Clinton
administration on the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. Specter feels that the
CTBT can be revived as it continues to be the best possible treaty to stop
proliferation of nuclear material. He hopes President-elect George Bush may
finally come round to this view. ``This could happen perhaps during his
second term,'' the Senator said. But for now the Republicans are certainly
not in favour of the CTBT. Specter told reporters Wednesday that he did not
expect a major break from the Clinton line on South Asia. He said that
George Bush was concerned about the tension between India and Pakistan, the
two latest nuclear states. ``South Asia is certainly a hot spot,''said
Specter. The new American administration also wants to push New Delhi and
Islamabad to take up the stalled dialogue. The Senator, who is also visiting
Pakistan, said he was concerned about the military regime in Islamabad and
wants Pakistan to quickly return to democracy.

20 million take holy dip in Ganges

http://www.dailystarnews.com/200101/25/n1012513.htm#BODY7

ALLAHABAD, India, Jan 24: The banks of the Ganges in northern India
witnessed an eruption of devotional rituals today (1/24/2001), the holiest
day of the world's largest religious festival, as an estimated 20 million
Hindu pilgrims bathed in its waters, reports AFP.

Even for a pilgrimage that breathes superlatives, Wednesday's mass bathing
was on a staggering scale.

Kumbh Mela police chief Alok Sharma said the event had passed off peacefully
as of 12:00 am (12:30 BST) but the crush of humanity took a toll, leaving at
least two elderly men from a monastic sect dead.

"Both were in their 80s and had been queuing up for hours for a dip in the
Ganges when they died of cold," said Dayanand Baba of the Juna Naga
(unclothed) sect.

Hindu devotees surged ahead, brushing aside the suffocating overcrowding and
an AFP correspondent at the site saw men and women with fractures and
serious bruises being treated by mobile medical teams.

Allahabad city's chief administrator Sadakant said such incidents were bound
to happen despite the months of "pain-staking" planning for organising the
festival.

The bathing ritual was led in a dramatic fashion by the Nagas, the most
revered of sadhu (Hindu sage) sects, marching in colourful processions from
about 5:15 am Wednesday (5:45 BST Tuesday).

The first to bathe at 5:45 am (6:15 BST) were 1,000 Nagas from the "Maha
Nirvani" sect, who threw off their marigold garlands and charged naked and
shouting into the waters at the sacred "Sangam" -- the confluence of the
Ganges, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers.

The group included both the dreadlocked older Nagas and shaven-headed
initiates, who were taking their first plunge after their initiation into
the sect.

In sharp constrast to the pomp and drama surrounding the bathing of the
Nagas was the picture of the millions of ordinary Hindus, who make up the
vast majority at the 12-yearly Maha Kumbh fair, taking a dip in the Ganges.

Hundreds of boats were seen ferrying devotees to the "Sangam," which has a
capacity to allow 20,000 pilgrims to bathe at a time.

Kumbh Mela administrator Jeevesh Nandan said at first estimates 15 million
Hindu devotees had taken the soul-salvaging dip since Tuesday 7:00 pm (19:30
BST).

Space Imaging's Color Snapshot from Space Shows Remarkable Detail of
Spiritual Event in India; Takes Place Every 144 Years

Denver, Colo., January 24, 2001 - Space Imaging's IKONOS satellite has taken
a detailed color photograph of the largest human gathering in the history of
the world, the Maha Kumbh Mela, a spiritual event held every 144 years in
Northern India. The festival is expected to attract 70 million people to a
sacred location on the Ganges River, 15 km from Allahabad, for more than a
month of bathing rituals. The IKONOS image, which was collected the day
before the most sacred and busiest bathing day on Jan. 24, is available for
free to the media.

Reporters can access the image on PR Newswire's Photowire
(www.prnewswire.com). A "before" image showing the area prior to the event
is available for downloading from Space Imaging's media Web site

423 miles above Earth. The spectacular image is the first high-resolution
satellite image ever taken of such an event. The image shows the sacred site
at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati rivers where
millions of Hindu worshippers bathe to wash away their sins and hasten the
Hindu people's progress toward nirvana.

Death toll rises to 1,500 after Indian earthquake

Last updated: 17:19

http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/breaking/2001/0126/breaking4.htm

It is now feared more than 1,500 people died today in the worst earthquake
to hit India in 50 years.

The quake, which rocked the western state of Gujarat, cast a tragic shadow
over India's 51st Republic Day celebrations as hundreds of buildings
crumbled.

The quake - measured at 7.9 on the Richter scale by the US Geological Survey
- was the region's most intense in half a century, the Indian Meteorological
Department said.

The Press Trust of India (PTI), quoting officials, has put the number of
dead at 1500 and rising.

Many families were spending the holiday at home when the quake struck,
bringing down older buildings in the western state of Gujarat and sending
out tremors that could be felt around the country and beyond.

At least eight people were killed and many injured in the southern Pakistani
province of Sindh by the earthquake.

A meteorological official in Karachi, the Sindh capital, said the earthquake
measured 6.2 on the Richter scale and was also felt in several other
Pakistani cities.

It was the world's second major quake of the year. On January 13th, a quake
measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale killed at least 700 people in El Salvador
and made 10 percent of that country's population homeless. Reuters

Ha'aretz: (and IMRA) Israel Electric
    goes for Egyptian gas deal

By Amiram Cohen Ha'aretz Energy Correspondent Ha'aretz 26 January 2001

[IMRA note: CEO Ya'akov Razon appears to think that gas production from a
well can be increased simply by turning a valve. In truth, the wells and
the infrastructure for moving the gas to the distribution point are all
built for a predetermined flow. If you want the option to double or triple
or quadruple the flow you have to invest heavily in this standby capacity.
Razon does not explain who he expects to bear this cost, which is
essentially a subsidy to the Egyptian gas (the Israeli gas group is a
private consortium).]

The Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) decided yesterday to buy over half its
natural gas needs for the next decade from an Egyptian source. The company's
board supported the decision by 8 votes to 2, with one abstention. IEC will
now enter negotiations with the Israeli-Egyptian pipe company EMG to buy 1.7
billion cubic meters of gas a year, with options to expand this.

The remaining needs (1.5 billion cubic meters a year) of the electricity
company for its natural gas will come from an Israeli source, either the Yam
Thetis partnership or Isramco. The value of the gas contract totals over $3
billion a year. It was also decided that the supply will conform to a "take
or pay" contract, meaning that the IEC will pay the supplier the agreed
amount for the gas, whether or not it needs it.

The government refused to provide guarantees to the IEC for the deal, in the
event of any problems concerning the delivery of gas to the IEC's power
stations.

In reaction, the Finance Minister Avraham Shochat said yesterday that the
decision was a professional one, satisfying the needs of the company without
neglecting the local gas sector. Shochat approved the split of the supply
contracts which allowed for the combination of both foreign and local
sources. He discounted any problems in the Egptian gas supply: If anything
were to happen, he contended, then the IEC would increase its demands from
the Israeli supplier.

CEO Ya'akov Razon described the board's decision as the right one, "based on
business criteria alone, taking into account the product price, quality,
availability and the stability of source. Any decision that did not comply
with these criteria would have resulted in higher electricity prices for the
consumer.

Subject: [bprlist] Dalai Lama participates in [Hindu] festival

Dalai Lama participates in festival

           By NEELESH MISRA
           Associated Press Writer

ALLAHABAD, India (AP) - Barefoot and giggling, the Dalai Lama sprinkled
himself with water from the Ganges on Thursday, but said it was too cold to
join millions of Hindus bathing in their holy river at the world's largest
religious gathering. ``I'm very happy to be here,'' the Dalai Lama told
journalists at the Kumbh Mela festival. Asked if he would join the devotees
bathing in the icy river, in a centuries-old ceremony Hindus believe will wash
away their sins and avoid reincarnation, the Dalai Lama said, ``I don't think
so. It's too cold.'' A festival official said more than 50 million worshippers had
visited by late Thursday, and more continued to arrive, drawn by an
auspicious astral arrangement that Hindu astrologers say coincides with the
Kumbh only once in 144 years. The festival began Jan. 9 and is held every
12 years. The exiled leader of Tibetan Buddhists, whose followers believe he
is the reincarnation of Buddha, had earlier tossed marigolds at
schoolchildren who greeted him with garlands and met journalists in a
barracks-style building, protected by Indian commandoes and his own
bodyguards, in the center of the 3,460-acre festival site. The Dalai Lama,
winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, first met for lunch and discussions with
leaders of the World Hindu Council, an influential group that criticizes
Christians and Muslims and wants to make multi-religious India a Hindu
state. Stepping into one of the hottest religious controversies in South Asia,
the Dalai Lama joined the Hindu leaders in condemning the Muslim and
Christian practice of proselytization. Hindus and Buddhists generally do not
proselytize. ``Whether Hindu or Muslim or Christian, whoever tries to convert,
it's wrong, not good,'' the Dalai Lama said after the meeting. ``I always
believe it's safer and better and reasonable to keep one's own tradition or
belief.'' He spoke after the Hindu Council's general secretary, Ashok Singhal,
had said, ``Buddhism, Hinduism and other non-aggressive religions have to
unite to douse Islam ... an aggressive religion.'' The Dalai Lama and others
signed a statement saying: ``We oppose conversions by any religious
tradition using various methods of enticement.'' At dusk, he joined the
Shankaracharya of Kanchi, one of India's four top Hindu religious leaders, in
a special prayer on the river banks. The two stood on an elevated wooden
platform covered with white sheets and worshipped the Ganges with 108
lighted lamps in a tradition that goes back centuries. An estimated 20,000
people watched from behind wooden barricades, while hymns were sung in
the background. The Dalai Lama then scooped up water from the river and
sprinkled it on his head in a mark of respect. Allahabad is the site of the
confluence of the Yamuna, Ganges and mythical Saraswati. ``This
confluence has become a very important venue for Hindu and Buddhist
religious congregations. Now this function should come up as an important
venue for a change of character and thought of people to make them work for
peace,'' the Dalai Lama said in a speech, translated into Hindi for the public.
The Dalai Lama planned to stay through Friday, to meet and bless Buddhists
and give a public speech on world peace at the festival grounds. The festival
has been marred in past years by stampedes. Organizers have asked
celebrities not to come and banned vehicles on the cramped grounds, but an
exception was made for the Dalai Lama. Worshippers who were pressed
against each other on pontoon bridges, waiting hours for their turns to bathe,
watched and waved as his convoy of white cars drove through the center of
the festival site, 380 miles east of New Delhi. Organizers said more than 70
million people will have visited by the time the festival ends Feb. 21.

1930 Moslem Council: Jewish Temple Mount ties 'beyond dispute'

By Etgar Lefkovits - The Jerusalem Post 26 January 2001

JERUSALEM (January 26) - Although Islamic Wakf officials are currently
denying any Jewish connection to the Temple Mount, a 1930 booklet about the
site published by the supreme Moslem body in Jerusalem during the British
Mandate states categorically that the site's identification with the First
Temple is "beyond dispute."

Published by the Supreme Moslem Council, the nine-page English-language
tourist guide, entitled A Brief Guide to al-Haram al-Sharif, a copy of which
was obtained by The Jerusalem Post, states: "The site is one of the oldest
in the world. Its sanctity dates from the earliest times. Its identity with
the site of Solomon's Temple is beyond dispute. This, too, is the spot,
according to universal belief, on which David built there an altar unto the
Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings." A footnote refers
the reader to 2 Samuel 26:25.

The Supreme Moslem Council "was the supreme Moslem body appointed by the
British Government during the Mandate period to administer the Moslem
affairs in Palestine which included Wakf affairs," said Dr. Eli Reches, an
Arab affairs expert at Tel Aviv University.

The booklet focuses on the Moslem connection to the site, with the authors
stating clearly: "... for the purposes of this Guide, which confines itself
to the Moslem period, the starting point is the year 637 A.D."

But Judaism's unequivocal connection to the Temple Mount comes up again on
the last page of the booklet, which discusses the "substructures" of the
Dome of the Rock.

Describing the area of Solomon's Stables, which Islamic Wakf officials
converted into a new mosque in 1996, the guide states: "...little is known
for certain about the early history of the chamber itself. It dates probably
as far back as the construction of Solomon's Temple... According to
Josephus, it was in existence and was used as a place of refuge by the Jews
at the time of the conquest of Jerusalem by Titus in the year 70 A.D."

The guide mentions in passing Christianity's connection to Solomon's
Stables. "We also know that this space was used by the Knights Templar as
stables and the holes to which they tethered their horses can still be seen
in the masonry of the piers... The contrast between lower and upper courses
of the larger piers would tend to show that they belong to two distinct
periods, and that the upper parts and the vaults of Arab construction [are]
superimposed upon ancient foundations."

The guide also refers to Christianity's link to a small chamber in the vast
subterranean structure, "which was believed in medieval times to have been
associated with Jesus Christ's infancy, a belief that was prevalent long
before the advent of the Crusaders, and was subsequently accepted by them."

Published by the Moslem Orphanage Press as a visitor's guide to the site and
priced at 200 mils, the booklet contains seven full-page photographs of the
Dome of the Rock which the guide says were reproduced courtesy of the
American Colony.

This week, Palestinian Authority Mufti Ikrima Sabri, interviewed by the
German Die Welt said, "There is not [even] the smallest indication of the
existence of a Jewish temple on this place in the past. In the whole city,
there is not even a single stone indicating Jewish history."

Beilin proposes asking refugees if they want to return or take compensation

Aaron Lerner Date: 26 January 2001

THIS IS NOT A PARODY

Israel Radio senior diplomatic correspondent Yoni Ben Menachem
reported on the mid day news program that Minister of Justice Beilin
proposed at the Taba talks today that all the Palestinian refugees
around the world be surveyed, asking them if they want to return or
take compensation.

The proposal was rejected by the Palestinian side. The Palestinians
maintain that all refugees have the right to both return AND received
compensation for the period that they were in "exile".

There is no indication in the report how Beilin's proposal to ask
refugees what they want to do jibes with the official Israeli
position that they cannot return to Israel.

CNN RESPONDS TO OUR INITIATIVE
Last week, we sent out an alert on the Palestinian Authority
executions of Palestinians accused of being collaborators with Israel by
public firing squad after a short trial and no appeal. We pointed out that
while there was film footage available to demonstrate the brutality and
injustice of this event, it went underreported by many major news bureaus,
especially CNN who usually over reports most stories. Was it an oversight,
or was it calculated to not make the Palestinian Authority look bad? It
appeared that way and many of you wrote to CNN at our request. Did they
respond? Yes, and almost immediately.
After the onslaught of well-written letters that pointed out
important reporting issues, a senior VP of CNN checked out our BFP
website,
checked out the organization in our network, and contacted me to discuss
the whole incident. There was a good exchange of views and while he
assured me that it was not calculated, I was able to assure him that we
expect full and fair reporting on both sides of the issues. I also filled
him in on the plight of Christians living under the PA and that CNN needs
to give some Christian issues more coverage in the future. I was invited
to call him at any time when we saw problems with their reporting, and also
to let them know when they have done something well. The impact of our
network is showing us to be a credible group representing tens of millions
of concerned Christians (and some staunch Jewish allies). Let's keep it up
and know that our voice and views are being heard. (By Clarence H. Wagner,
Jr., International Director, Bridges for Peace.)

RAINS OF BLESSING
Heavy rains on January 25 have caused severe flooding in Israel,
blocking and a number of roads are blocked. The Sea of Galilee level has
risen five centimeters (2 inches) over the past few days, and is nearing
213.50 meters below sea level - still a half-meter lower than the
government-mandated "red line," and 4.5 meters below the optimum level.

Earthquake shakes Greece
January 26, 2001

PATRAS, Greece -- A moderate earthquake has rocked parts of south-
western Greece, but there are no reports of damage or injuries. The
undersea quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 4.1, occurred on
Friday at 5:37 a.m. (0337 GMT) off Patras, about 180 kilometres (115
miles) west of Athens, the Athens Geodynamic Institute said.

Minor earthquake shakes northeast Ohio
Friday, January 26, 2001

ASHTABULA, Ohio (AP) -- A minor earthquake knocked dishes from
shelves and cracked walls in northeast Ohio, but no injuries were
reported. The quake occurred about 10:03 p.m Thursday and had a
preliminary magnitude of 4.2, meaning it was strong enough to cause
minor structural damage, according to Michael C. Hansen, coordinator
of the Ohio Seismic Network based in Columbus. The National
Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo., said the quake was
centered in Lake Erie, about 10 miles north-northwest of Ashtabula,
which is between Cleveland and Erie, Pa. A slighter milder quake was
reported in the same area last Friday.

Quake complacency worries expert
Professor will speak about New Madrid
By MARK WILSON, Courier & Press staff writer
January 24, 2001

A family in Nelson County, Ky., near Louisville, were thrown from bed
and their chimney collapsed. Houses shook from Vincennes, Ind., all
the way down to New Orleans. In fact, the ground shook for up to six
months during what is usually called the New Madrid Earthquake in the
winter of 1811-1812. Those are just some of the historical reports
and descriptions of New Madrid fault zone earthquake activity
gathered by Dr. James Durbin, an assistant professor of geology at
the University of Southern Indiana. It could happen again, said
Durbin, who thinks Tri-Staters are too complacent about the very real
threat of earthquakes in our region... "When the 1811-12 earthquakes
occurred, the quakes were felt as far away as Washington, D.C.,
Savannah, Ga., and New Orleans, places a lot farther than
Evansville," Durbin said. "The anecdotal reports are that the ground
never stopped moving for a period of six months. The thing people
don't realize, they tend to think of it as a singular earthquake. It
was plural. Not only was it plural, it was a whole lot of plural."
The fault zone is named for the town of New Madrid, Mo., in the
Mississippi River Valley near Arkansas. "Prevailing wisdom right now
is that (the 1811 quake) is not a fluke," he said. "The fault zone
has a strong history of this stuff. The big ones seem to occur
anywhere in 100 to 300 year intervals. "It has been almost 200 years
since the last big one."

Bush to move ahead with plans for missile defense plan

Fri Jan 26,2001 -- President Bush intends to move ahead with a national
missile defense plan despite objections from Russia and other countries,
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Friday. Bush intends to follow
through on his pledge during his campaign to build a national shield to
protect against limited attack from ballistic missile, the secretary said.

As to the landmark 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty that rules out such
defenses, Rumsfeld said, "we are in a very different world" than when the
treaty was signed. "It was a long time ago that that treaty was fashioned.
Technologies were noticeably different. The Soviet Union, our partner in that
agreement, doesn't exist any more."

U.S. forces placed on alert; U.S. military issues order raising U.S. forces
from Threatcon Bravo to Alpha

Fri Jan 26,2001 -- The United States has sent a Patriot anti-missile defense
battery to Israel amid heightened concerns of a Middle East war. Pentagon
sources said the heightened tension in the Middle East prompted a decision
to place on alert U.S. forces in Germany and Italy. They said Washington
has been concerned about an Iraqi attack on Israel amid reports that several
Iraqi divisions have moved close to the Syrian border.

The San Antonio Express-News published a copy of a U.S. military order
that on Jan. 11 raised the alert status of U.S. forces from Threatcon Bravo to
Alpha. Alpha is a heightened alert of a terrorist attack. "Recent intelligence
indicates that an increased or more predictable threat exists, thus warranting
the Threatcon change," the U.S. military order read.

Pentagon officials said the Patriot missile brigade will participate in an
exercise in Israel scheduled for Feb. 8. The exercise will last 15 days. The
exercise, called "Juniper Cobra," will include about 400 members of the 69th
Air Defense Artillery Brigade based near Frankfurt, Germany. A Patriot
missile battery and personnel are expected to arrive by ship on Feb. 4 and
join Patriot batteries already deployed in the Jewish state. "It is a training
event to sustain interoperability between the U.S. Army and the Israeli
defense forces," U.S. Army spokesman Maj. Tom Collins said. In December,
Lockheed Martin was awarded a $212 million contract to produce an
upgraded Patriot.

Kfar Chouba, a Lebanese village that faces Har Dov. An Israeli helicopter
also flew over valleys in the area, firing machine guns. Three armed
Lebanese civilians were reportedly killed. In Jerusalem, the IDF

Fri Jan 26,2001 -- There are conflicting reports coming out of Taba as to the
success of the peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians. In general,
both sides are still saying that considerable progress has been made, but
this morning it is being suggested that there are still major differences on the
subjects of future borders and security. The talks are likely to continue for
another four or five days, according to Meretz leader Yossi Sarid, who is a

Barak claims Maastricht standards in reach

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: Ha'aretz

Fri Jan 26,2001 -- Prime Minister Ehud Barak said yesterday that he thought
the "Greenspan" policies followed by Bank of Israel governor, David Klein,
were the right policies for the country. Barak, addressing a forum of the
Federation of Israeli Chambers of Commerce, added that with inflation
currently running at very low levels (zero percent for 2000) then Israel would
shortly see its real interest rates lowered and brought into line with U.S. and
European levels.

If he were to win the election, Barak said that he would continue to pursue an
economic policy that foresaw Israeli compliance with the criteria set out in
the Maastricht Treaty (which set the economic parameters for European
countries to join the euro currency group). "When I took office," Barak told
the Federation forum, "I believed that Israel could achieve the Maastricht
goals within seven to eight years. Now, after only a year and a half, if the
public were to put their faith in me, then I believe that this could be achieved
within two and a half years."

Turkey, Israel sign initial accord on water sales

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: Reuters

Fri Jan 26,2001 -- Turkey's Water Authority said Friday it had signed an
initial accord with Israel over exporting water and negotiations would finalize
the terms of a deal in coming months. Under discussion is a Turkish plan to
sell 50 million cubic meters of water a year to Israel, some 2.5 percent of
national needs. That could help irrigate Israel's parched lands and, indirectly,
could one day help meet urgent Palestinian needs. "A document of accord
was signed by the parties," it added. There is not yet any international
market in water, but analysts say in the future that it could be a key
commodity in the drier countries of the Middle East.

Palestinians have long accused Israel of denying them their fair share of
water from aquifers in occupied Arab territories. Last month Iraq accused
Turkey of blocking a tripartite water agreement with Syria. Both Damascus
and Baghdad say the current flow of water from Turkey is not enough. Water
is a highly contentious issue in the Middle East, with Iraq and Syria, staunch
foes of Israel, largely reliant for drinking water, irrigation and power generation
on the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, both of which originate in Turkey.

EU financing 'Peace Now' movement

                         Weekend News Today

                         Source: Ha'aretz

Fri Jan 26,2001 -- The European Union is helping to fund Peace Now's
activities among immigrants from the former Soviet Union and residents of
outlying towns, which a senior official of the organization calls "political
education." News of the aid was contained in documents that recently
reached Ha'aretz, and the assistance itself was confirmed by EU
representative to Israel David Chris and senior Peace Now official Dr. Janet
Aviad.

"We don't support Peace Now's political demonstrations," Chris stressed,
but rather the dialogues it organizes between immigrants and Palestinians
and its work with new immigrants aimed at emphasizing the link between
their economic situation and the lack of progress toward peace. When asked

peace movement, and we support it as we support other peace groups such
as B'tselem - as part of the EU's belief in promoting peace in the region."

U.S. Army to conduct training exercise in Israel

Fri Jan 26,2001 -- Patriot missiles, used to defend Israel during the Gulf War,
are reportedly on their way to the conflict-torn Middle East along with
hundreds of U.S. troops to participate in a training exercise. The U.S. Army
told the San Antonio Express-News in Friday's editions that a Patriot missile
brigade stationed in Europe will be used in a training exercise in Israel.
Elements of the 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade near Frankfurt, Germany,
were ordered to the Middle East as part of a joint U.S.-Israeli exercise
dubbed Juniper Cobra, Major Tom Collins, an Army spokesman, said
Thursday. U.S. forces in Germany and Italy were placed on heightened alert
status.

Collins said deployment of about 400 U.S. troops already has begun, with
the training exercises to extend from February 8-23. But he said the
exercises were planned in advance of the Mideast summit. "This thing is not
linked to the peace talks," said Collins. "It is a training event to sustain
interoperatability between the U.S. Army and the Israeli defense forces."
During the Gulf War, a Patriot anti-missile system unit was deployed from
Fort Bliss in El Paso. In the face of Iraqi Scud missile attacks, former
President George Bush had ordered batteries of Patriots airlifted into the
country on short notice in a demonstrative effort to allay Israeli fears.

New gay AIDS infections rise sharply in San Francisco

Fri Jan 26,2001 -- New AIDS infections among San Francisco gay men are
rising more quickly than previously believed -- an alarming sign that a
"rebound epidemic" of the killer disease could already be underway. "The
numbers are harrowing," Mike Shriver, Mayor Willie Brown's official adviser
on AIDS and HIV policy, said Wednesday. "We aren't just getting one
snapshot of one group of high risk people in one place. We have a
constellation of data sets now all converging at higher incidence estimates."

The current rate of new infections with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS,
among San Francisco gay men is 2.2 percent, up from 1.04 percent in 1997,
according new estimates reached by city researchers and health experts.
That translates into roughly 748 new infections projected for this year. The
infection rate for gay men who also inject intravenous drugs was estimated to
have more than doubled to 4.6 percent, compared with 1.9 in 1997.

The estimates, based on four new studies, are both higher than preliminary
figures San Francisco released last year and confirm fears that a new wave
of the AIDS epidemic could be gaining steam. Public health experts say the
San Francisco update was a clear sign that after years of relative stability,
the gay community was dropping its guard against the HIV virus. "This is a
signal we should take very seriously." San Francisco's initial projections of
rising AIDS infection rates last year was the first to illustrate a direct link
between new HIV infections and an increase in risky behavior among gay
men that experts have tracked over the past five years. San Francisco,
known around the world as a gay capital, became one of the first centers of
the AIDS epidemic in the early 1980s, when as many as half the gay men in
the city were believed to be infected with HIV. Since 1981, more than 18,000
San Franciscans have died of AIDS.Coates said San Francisco's role as a
leading indicator of the next phase of the AIDS crisis would likely prove true
this time around as well, noting that similar studies had started to track
rising gay AIDS infection rates in Vancouver, British Columbia and Sydney,
Australia, as well as rising rates of sexually transmitted diseases among gay
men in London, England; Los Angeles, California and Seattle, Washington.

Mexico's Fox vows to improve trade with Europe

Fri Jan 26,2001 -- Mexico will work to offset any drop in exports to the United
States due to a U.S. economic slowdown by stepping up trade with Europe
and other regions, Mexican President Vicente Fox has said. "If the U.S.
economy slows down, it will reduce growth in Mexico," Fox told a news
conference on Friday at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in
Davos, Switzerland, pointing to Mexico's close trade links with its giant
northern neighbour.

U.S. plans for national defense shield could lead to dangerous showdown

Fri Jan 26,2001 -- President Vladimir Putin warned the United States Friday
that the deployment of a national missile defence shield and NATO's
expansion into eastern Europe would "irreparably damage" global stability.
Putin said the Kremlin wanted to cooperate with the West but hinted that a
decision by US President George W. Bush to go ahead unilaterally with its
NMD plans could lead to a dangerous showdown with Russia.

5.0 quake hit Oaxaca Mexico, also felt in Mexico City

Fri Jan 26,2001 -- A moderate earthquake shuddered through southern
coastal Mexico on Friday. No damage or injuries have been reported. The
magnitude-5 quake occurred at 8:19 a.m. and was centered on the coast of
the southern state of Oaxaca, the national Seismological Service reported.
The quake was felt as far away as Mexico City, about 220 miles to the north,
where some buildings there swayed slightly.

Scientists warn of eruption of Philippine's Mayon volcano

Fri Jan 26,2001 -- The Mayon volcano puffed gas and ash as scientists
warned Friday it may erupt next month, just a year after its last eruption
drove 68,000 people from their homes in the central Philippines. The
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert level now
to 3 from 2, out of a possible 5, Thursday after researchers registered high
gas levels and spotted puffs of ash coinciding with minor earthquakes around
the 8,100-foot mountain. The Mayon volcano is located about 215 miles SE
of Manila.

The institute had recently issued the level 2 alert on Jan. 9 after spotting lava
piles at the crater pit and detecting rising magma, a repeat of the conditions
before Mayon spewed lava, belched red-hot boulders and blanketed towns
with heavy ash nearly a year ago. Volcanologist Julio Sabit said a level 3
alert does not warrant evacuation as any possible eruption is still 3-4 weeks
away. Sabit noted that a four-mile area around Mayon is declared
permanently off limits after the volcano erupted last Feb. 24 and forced
evacuation of area villages and farms from its fertile slopes. Mayon's most
violent eruption, in 1814, killed more than 1,200 people and buried an entire
town in volcanic mud.

Japan stepping up preparedness for major disasters

Fri Jan 26,2001 -- Japan's government is stepping up its preparedness for
major disasters in the earthquake-prone country. The government's Central
Disaster Prevention Council, which met on Friday, called for detailed disaster
plans and a review of earthquake monitoring in central Japan near Mount
Fuji, which has recently shown signs of increased seismic activity. Plans to
cope with a major earthquake in the area, just west of Tokyo, may lead to
more high-intensity earthquake monitors and other measures, he said. The
official, who asked not to be identified, said heightened readiness did not
signal government fear of an imminent disaster. "Before, we would only meet
after something had already happened," he said.

"But this year we will meet periodically, perhaps once every three months or
so. Also, think of how many disasters took place last year." On Friday, an
earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale hit western India, killing
hundreds. Japan, like India, is regularly jolted with tremors of varying
strength. Japan sits atop the junction of at least 3 tectonic plates, making it
one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries. Last year was one of the
most seismically active in recent years, saw as many as 3 volcanic
eruptions and tens of thousands of related tremors. The increased activity
included snow-capped Mount Fuji. From ancient times it has been the
national symbol, last erupting back in 1702. Scientists said the seismic
activity at Mount Fuji was unusual. But they added that they do not believe
that other signs are pointing to an eruption anytime soon, such as changes
in the shape of the mountain from upward movements of magma.

Researchers have placed more than 1,000 high-intensity earthquake
monitors around Japan and use global positioning system (GPS) satellites to
predict the next major tremor. But predicting tremors is difficult because of
the variety of physical and geological variables that cause them, they say.

Tuberculosis levels rose 34% since 1987

                         Source: ABC news/Reuters

Fri Jan 26,2001 -- An influx of foreign visitors has helped to increase the
number of cases of tuberculosis in England and Wales to their highest level
since 1983, according new figures released on Friday. From just last year
the number of new cases of the infectious lung disease, once thought to be
under control, jumped 10.6 percent, with two-thirds of the infections in
London, the Public Health Laboratory Service (PHLS) said. "We have seen a
gradual increase in notifications in the UK since the early 1990s. This rise of
10.6 percent over just the last year however, means that there has been an
overall rise of 34 percent since 1987, and this is a cause for concern in a
disease that had declined tenfold over the previous 40 years," Dr John
Watson, of the PHLS, said in a statement.

Surveillance data shows most of the recent increase in the disease is
attributable, at least in part, to infections in people coming from countries
which have a high prevalence of the tuberculosis. Despite the best efforts of
the World Health Organisation to eradicate the disease, it is still rampant in
many countries, particularly in Asia and Africa, and poses a threat to the
rest of the world. Tuberculosis is one of the biggest infectious killers. The
disease, which is spread by coughing and sneezing, destroys the lungs and
causes death through asphyxiation. Despite effective treatment 1.5 million
people worldwide die from it each year.

Russia's Mir Space Station to splash down south of Australia March 6th

                         Weekend News Today

                         Source: Yahoo news/AFP

Fri Jan 26,2001 -- Russia announced Friday that the 130-tonne Mir space
station would splash down to Earth just south of Australia in early March.
The foreign ministry stressed that most of the 15-year-old craft would burn up
in the atmosphere and any parts of the orbiter that survive the descent would
fall harmlessly into the Pacific. Any Mir remnants will splash down "in the
open sea, in the southern Pacific and removed from (existing) routes used by
ships and airplanes," a foreign ministry statement said.

The largest piece of debris -- whose estimated size was not given -- would
crash into the sea less than 500 kilometers (300 miles) SW of Australia's
southern Tasmania island, said the ministry. Several nations, and in
particular Japan, have voiced fears that sections of Mir may come tumbling
down over their territory when the fault-prone Soviet-era space craft makes its
fateful descent around March 6. Moscow has promised to keep Tokyo
informed of minute-by-minute developments once Mir's last plunge is
underway.

The ministry statement said most of the once-revolutionary space lab would
burn up in the atmosphere some 70 to 90 kilometers (about 40 to 65 miles)
above Earth. "No more than 30 minutes will pass from the moment Mir
enters the dense layers of the atmosphere until the fragments that do not
burn up hit the sea," the ministry said. One scientist with Russian space
control warned last month that no object the size of Mir -- the craft is some
30 meters (yards) long -- has ever been brought down to Earth before. The
scientist speculated that up to 40 tonnes of Mir may survive the fiery re-
entrance and hit the sea. Last month, Russia lost contact with Mir for almost
24 hours, sparking international alarm at the possible security threat if such
a communication breakdown recurred while Mir was hurtling towards Earth.

Fri Jan 26,2001 -- A minor earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 shook
northeastern Ohio late Thursday night, and tremors were felt as far away as
Toronto, Ontario, a spokesman for the U.S. Geological Survey said. The
quake occurred at about 10 p.m. EST and its epicenter was recorded 10
miles NNE of Ashtabula, Ohio, said Bruce Presgrave of the agency's
National Earthquake Information Center. He predicted little if any damage,
given the relatively low preliminary magnitude measurement, but said the
quake was also felt in Erie, Pa., and Toronto.

Italian doc says he will clone human

Italian doc says he will clone human

LEXINGTON, Ky., Jan. 26 (UPI) -- An Italian doctor and fertility expert
told a lecture at Samaritan Hospital that he plans to attempt to clone a
human being within the next year.

Dr. Severino Antinori of Rome said he is treating 10 couples -- including
one American couple -- who are candidates for what he described as a
therapeutic procedure. Antinori said this is the first time he has made his
intentions public.

"Whether we like it or not, we will have cloned individuals in the very
near future," said Dr. Panos Zavos, a friend of Antinori, who delivered his
lecture Thursday.

Zavos told Friday's Lexington Herald-Leader, "If it's done sensibly and
responsibly enough, I think there is a place for cloning in this world. It's
going to happen."

Antonini, 55, who is known for his work in assisted reproduction
techniques and in developing methods have allowed even women in their early
60s to get pregnant, said the chance to help infertile couples outweighs the
ethical objections to his procedure, which he describes as safe.

"Life is important," he said. "The goal to be a father, to be a mother, is
a human right, an absolute human right."

Antonini said the cloning attempt likely would be made somewhere in the
Mediterranean.

Italian, U.S. Scientists Unveil Human Cloning Effort

By Andrew Stern

CHICAGO (Reuters) - An international group of reproductive experts plans to
launch a serious effort to clone humans to provide children to infertile
couples, a U.S. scientist said on Friday.

A viable embryo, probably using stem cells or other cells taken from the
man, could be available for implantation in the woman's uterus within 18
months, said Dr. Panayiotis Zavos of The Andrology Institute of America and
the Kentucky Center for Reproductive Medicine and Invitro Fertilization in
Lexington, Kentucky.

Zavos, a 25-year veteran in the reproductive field, hosted a conference on
Thursday in Lexington where he and Italian fertility doctor Severino
Antinori announced plans for the scientific coalition to clone humans.

``This is going to be the first serious effort,'' Zavos said in a telephone
interview. ``I do know various individual groups that are acting on their
own, but they lack the support.''

Scientists have cloned sheep, beginning with ``Dolly'' in Scotland in 1997,
as well as mice and cows, but any suggestions that human clones are next
have been met by outrage within the scientific community and in political
and religious circles.

``As revolutionary as it may sound, as fictional as it may sound, it will be
done. It's a genie that is out of the bottle and will be controlled,'' Zavos
said.

He said 10 infertile couples have volunteered to participate, including an
American pair who cannot conceive because the man's testicles were severed
in an accident.

Zavos said his group would hold a conference in Rome in March, to which a
cardinal from the Vatican would be invited. The Roman Catholic Church is
opposed to human cloning. The consortium would operate in an unnamed
Mediterranean country.

The scientists plan to use regular cells or undifferentiated stem cells from
the husband and insert them into an ovacyte, a woman's egg stripped of its
genetic material. The cell would be stimulated to divide and create an
embryo equipped with all the specialty cells that make up a copy of the man,
and then implanted in the wife's uterus.

The wives could also be the ones cloned, depending on the couple's choice,
he said.

``We have a great deal of knowledge. We can grade embryos, we can do genetic
screening, we can do quality control,'' Zavos said.

``It's not the easiest thing. The stability of the genetic information is
what's important. We're cloning a human being now, we're not trying to
create a Dolly. You don't want to create a monster,'' he said.

To create animal clones, scientists frequently made hundreds of failed
attempts to develop viable embryos. Medical ethicists have posed the
possibility of cruel failures in human cloning, where genetic abnormalities
result in grotesque fetuses unable to survive outside the womb.

Antinori has sparked a furor in Italy by helping post-menopausal women
become ``granny moms,'' and has also pioneered a technique to help sterile
men by ``cultivating'' their nascent sperm cells inside the testicles of
mice.

Subject: [bprlist] Beijing using front companies to grab U.S. arms technology

Beijing using front companies to grab U.S. arms technology

By Bill Gertz
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

China is buying U.S. weapons technology illegally through front
companies in Hong Kong and Singapore, U.S. intelligence officials said.
According to sensitive intelligence reports, China last month acquired
"radiation-hardened" integrated circuits from a U.S. company that were
shipped to China from Singapore, said officials familiar with the reports.
The Chinese company involved in the diversion was identified as the
China Aircraft and Space Technology Co.
In a second activity, a Chinese missile-manufacturing firm purchased
American-made communications-test equipment from a U.S. company
based in
Hong Kong. The U.S. company was not identified under intelligence-collection
rules.
Both sales were reported to senior U.S. officials early last month and
are a sign that Beijing is continuing aggressively to acquire U.S.
weapons-related goods for its military-modernization program.
All military-related goods sold from the United States to China require
an export license. However, Chinese companies secretly have been
purchasing
embargoed technology and hardware under export rules relaxed during the
Clinton administration.
The intelligence reports bolster the findings of a special
congressional committee that stated in a 1999 report that the use of Hong
Kong companies "is a common [Chinese] tactic for illegal transfer of
technology."
In a related development, China is continuing to sell missile-related
equipment to Iraq and Iran in apparent violation of its pledge last fall to
curb such transfers, said officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
The officials provided a briefing to The Washington Times to highlight
what they said were ongoing Chinese sales of weapons and missile
technology
to rogue states, in violation of official pledges by Beijing to curtail such
transfers.
"The Chinese appear to be selling everything to everybody," said one
defense official.
In November, the Clinton administration announced it would not impose
sanctions on China for selling missile technology to Iran and Pakistan after
Beijing promised to curb further sales. Iran and Pakistan, however, were
slapped with sanctions.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said in a statement at the time
that China had no plans "to assist, in any way, any country" developing
nuclear-capable ballistic missiles.
Regarding the Iraqi missile-related sales, the officials said a
delegation of representatives of a Chinese company was set to travel to Iraq
last month to discuss the sale of "missile-related guidance and test
equipment."
The company is offering gear to be used in testing missile inertial
guidance systems, which are key components of long-range missile
systems.
The company was using what U.S. officials said is a "cover name" to
mask the true nature of the sales trip. The company was identified as the
Shandong Arts and Crafts Co.
A Pentagon report on arms proliferation made public earlier this month
stated that Iraq is working on two short-range missiles that are providing a
base for building long-range missiles, should U.N. sanctions on the country
be lifted. The report noted that Iraq "may have ambitions for longer-range
missiles, including an ICBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile)."
Additionally, a Chinese company has recently been shipping specialty
metals and chemicals used in missile production to Iran, the officials said.
The seller was identified as Norinco, the acronym for China North Industries
Co., which was linked by federal investigators in 1996 to smuggling of AK-47
assault rifles in Los Angeles.
The Iranian buyer was identified as the Shahid Bakeri Industrial Group,
a defense-related company involved in Iran's missile program.
The Pentagon report stated that despite "numerous pledges" not to sell
weapons to rogue states, "Chinese entities have supported some nuclear,
chemical and missile programs in countries of proliferation concern, driven
by China's overall strategic interests in South Asia and the Middle East and
by domestic economic pressures."
The report noted China's sales of missile-related goods to Iran, Libya
and North Korea.
According to the officials, in addition to its own
weapons-proliferation activities, China covertly is helping North Korea buy
and sell missile goods.
In November, a North Korean company based in China sent specialty
steel
used in missiles to Egypt, the officials said, noting that the steel is
controlled under the 29-nation Missile Technology Control Regime.
That same month, the U.S. administration waived sanctions on China
based on promises from Beijing to tighten export controls on missile-related
goods.
Also in November, a North Korean company in Japan purchased a U.S.-
made
high-speed video camera used in missile development from an unidentified
American company.
The camera was shipped from the United States to Egypt, and then was
transferred to Russia and China before finally reaching North Korea, the
officials said.
CIA and White House spokesmen had no immediate comment on the
proliferation activities of China and North Korea.
A Chinese Embassy spokesman could not be reached for comment.

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Americans believe the U.S. would be a better nation if
people got more involved in religion -- but they don't care what religion. That's
the conclusion of a study funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts. The study
found that 70 percent of Americans want religion's influence on society to
grow, and 76 percent said which faith grows doesn't matter to them. The
study also found that 68 percent of Americans believe there is prejudice
toward evangelical Christians. Three out of four evangelicals said they believe
that many journalists have a built-in bias against religion, a view shared by
56 percent of the general public.

BEIJING, China -- The Bible is a national bestseller in China. Even though
the Chinese government restricts the sale and distribution of the Bible
throughout the country, 25 million copies have been sold in the last 13 years,
reports Idea News Agency. Since bookstores aren't allowed to sell copies of
the Bible, churches have been the main source of sales.

Subject: [bprlist] India Death Toll May Reach 13,000

India Death Toll May Reach 13,000

By NIRMALA GEORGE, Associated Press Writer

AHMEDABAD, India (AP) - Desperate rescue workers climbed atop
mountains of
debris and screamed into the crevices Saturday, hoping for some sign of life
from thousands trapped by western India's devastating earthquake. About
2,500
bodies had been recovered, and one official said the death toll would end up
reaching 13,000.

While thousands of rescuers clawed at the rubble and hope faded, stunned
survivors of Friday's 7.9-magnitude quake slept in the open, panicking as
more than 80 aftershocks rippled through the hardest-hit state, Gujarat. Most
had no water, food or medicine. Others refused to eat, keeping a tearful
vigil as emergency workers' drills bit into concrete in search of their
buried loved ones.

In Bhuj district at the quake's epicenter, thousands of terrified people fled
in cars, jeeps and on foot, carrying their belongings. Many had been walking
since soon after the temblor struck.

Buses and trucks were forced to stop before a cracked bridge on a dry river
that connects the district with the rest of the state.

``We have been walking since morning. We are fleeing for our lives,'' said
Harjivan Vyas, 37, a factory worker in Bhuj town. ``There is no drinking
water, no food. All houses are destroyed.''

Friday's quake - India's strongest in more than 50 years - struck on Republic
Day, a national holiday. It shook the earth for more than 1,200 miles, but it
hit hardest in Gujarat state, pulverizing cities and towns and bringing
multistory buildings down like houses of cards.

Gujarat Home Minister Haren Pandya said 2,500 bodies had been recovered
already and more than 14,000 people were injured. The state's transport
minister said the death toll would soar.

``It will be more than 10,000 in the Kutch district alone,'' Bimal Shah told
The Associated Press, referring to the region near the Pakistan border where
the quake was centered. ``For the rest of the state it would be 2,000 or
3,000.''
Shah's comment was based on aerial surveys. His death toll estimate - a
much
higher number than officials suggested earlier in the day - was an indication
that emergency crews had given up hope of finding many survivors under the
debris.

Among those buried were 350 children who had been taking part in a parade
for
Republic Day, which commemorates the adoption of India's constitution 51
years ago. They were marching through a Kutch street when several houses
toppled onto them.

In the trading hub of Ahmedabad, a city of 4.5 million people, 15 high school
students were trapped in their school, which collapsed soon after they
arrived for a special class on their day off.

Of the 37 teen-agers who had come for the class, six were rescued within
hours. But the bodies of 16 were also pulled out, and a day later, the 15
other teen-agers were still missing. Their parents kept a grim vigil as
workers searched frantically and hope faded.

``Until Friday afternoon we could hear the cries of the children. Now we hear
nothing,'' police inspector Ramesh Barot said.

As the rescuers labored on, mothers of the missing huddled under a
makeshift
tent while fathers waited alongside the police cordon surrounding the school.
Their whispers and weeping were drowned out by the sound of power drills
boring through the concrete.

``I want my son back. Why can't they do something?'' wailed Nainabehn
Patel,
her eyes red and swollen. Her son, Bhowmik, 16, was somewhere under the
rubble.

As hope faded, local residents began to point fingers: Local authorities
hadn't checked shoddy construction in recent years, they said, and many
were
unavailable when the quake hit because of the holiday celebrations.

``Every state government officer we called was away at a parade. Even police
came six hours after the quake,'' an angry Dhrumal Vaidya said Saturday.

At almost all the collapsed buildings in Ahmedabad, local residents launched
the rescue effort.

``We private citizens have arranged for this single crane. We need at least
another two cranes, but who will listen to us?'' asked Ashok Patel, a bank
manager.

Officials in Gujarat made urgent calls for food, medicine and up to 30,000
tents for people left homeless, and by Saturday aid began to pour in.

Indian Agriculture Minister Bhaskar Barua said the Red Cross had offered
thousands of blankets, the Swiss government was sending sniffer dogs and
assistance was also being accepted from the United States, Russia, Japan,
Germany and Turkey. Norway and China had offered monetary aid, and
Taiwan was
prepared to send rescue workers.

With electrical distribution lines down in many areas, authorities set up
generators to run the machines that clear the rubble and operate medical
equipment. The government set up satellite phones for key relief work, and
the Indian air force launched its biggest ever disaster relief operation,
ferrying supplies and injured people in more than 40 transport aircraft.

``We will soon rebuild the flattened houses and resettle innumerable
habitations which were wiped out by the quake,'' Indian Prime Minister Atal
Bihari Vajpayee said in a speech.

The quake was the most powerful to strike India since Aug. 15, 1950, when
an
8.5-magnitude temblor killed 1,538 people in northeastern Assam state.
Throughout Gujarat, the damage was immense: More than 100 multistory
buildings and thousands of smaller houses collapsed.

In Ahmedabad alone, 40 to 50 high-rise buildings crumbled. Some 14,000
people, mostly suffering broken bones and cuts, jammed hospitals.

Survivors sifted through the surface of the rubble on Saturday, looking to
salvage belongings or to hear sounds from their still-buried loved ones.
Rescue workers, equipped with little more than crowbars or pickaxes, dug
through the debris. A few bulldozers were deployed.

Some people crept up the twisted stairwells to pack valuables into suitcases
and baskets, lowering them by rope to the ground. But most were too afraid
to
re-enter the shaking buildings. They slept in the street around campfires as
temperatures dipped to 55 degrees.

Hetal Shah, 23, and her brothers were scrambling over a pile of stones and
metal that used to be their fourth-floor apartment. They were looking for
$4,350 worth of jewelry and clothing that had been gathered for her wedding
next month.

Nearby, another man pulled a beautiful China plate from the pile of rubble.
``This was from my living room,'' he said softly.

I hope we can all pray for a ease of suffering for these people. I for
one don't care what there beliefs are, no parent should see there
children suffer.

God bless you and all of your families.

Subject: [bprlist] Israeli-Palestinian Talks End Without a Deal

Israeli-Palestinian Talks End Without a Deal

By Caroline Drees

TABA, Egypt (Reuters) - Israeli and Palestinian negotiators ended five days
of talks in Egypt without a peace deal on Saturday but said they were closer
than ever to agreement.

All but abandoning hope of a breakthrough before Israeli elections on
February 6, they issued a joint statement in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of
Taba saying they would resume talks after the election and believed they
could bridge the gaps.

``It proved impossible to reach understandings on all issues despite the
substantial progress that was achieved in each of the issues discussed,'' the
written joint statement said.

Despite the failure to reach even a partial agreement, Palestinian officials
said President Yasser Arafat would meet Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak
in
Sweden on Tuesday or Wednesday to discuss peace.

Israeli sources said Barak had not yet decided whether to go to Stockholm
and
was considering how being seen at Arafat's side would affect his already slim
chances of winning the prime ministerial election against right-winger Ariel
Sharon.

The negotiators discussed four main issues in Taba -- the fate of Palestinian
refugees, borders, security and the future of Jerusalem. The four were the
main obstacles to a deal after an inconclusive U.S.-brokered summit last
July.

``The sides declare that they have never been closer to reaching an
agreement. It is thus our shared belief that the remaining gaps could be
bridged with the resumption of negotiations following the Israeli election,''
they said.

The talks were suspended for two days in midweek after the killing of two
Israelis in the West Bank. But they resumed despite violence in which at
least 312 Palestinians, 48 Israelis and 13 Israeli Arabs have been killed in
the past four months.

Bloodshed continued at the weekend. Palestinian sources said several
Palestinian people had been hurt in clashes near the cities of Ramallah and
Nablus in the West Bank.

Talks Mulled In Sweden

Negotiators from both sides, appearing at a joint news conference and
chatting cordially, said trust had been rebuilt at the Taba talks.
Afterwards, they gathered in a huddle and clutched each other's hands in a
sign of solidarity.

But such trust may not be enough for Barak, 58, whom opinion polls suggest
will be beaten soundly on February 6 by Sharon, 72, who takes a tougher
line
against the Palestinians.

Talks with Arafat might lift Barak's hopes of a last-minute peace
breakthrough or an end to the worst Israeli-Palestinian clashes in years. But
pictures of him talking to Arafat as violence continued might go down badly
with voters.

``The two leaders will meet Tuesday or Wednesday in Stockholm under the
auspices of the European Union and the United Nations. They will give a
last-minute chance to agree on final status issues before the Israeli
elections,'' a Palestinian official told Reuters.

An Israeli political source said: ``There is indeed an international
initiative to hold such a meeting with Arafat and Stockholm is one of the
options, but there is not confirmation yet the meeting will take place.''

Barak's office did not comment. Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson was
quoted by Sweden's TT news agency as saying no decision had been taken
yet on
the meeting.

Israeli Sees Partial Deal Soon

The negotiators gave no details of what had been decided at the talks in
Taba, apparently under a mutual agreement.

Both sides said violence must end and Israel's chief negotiator, Foreign
Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami, said: ``It is doubtful there has ever been a round
of talks so serious, deep and detailed.''

Another Israeli negotiator, Yossi Sarid, said he hoped for a partial
agreement ``in two to three weeks.''

But Palestinian negotiator Abu Ala was less optimistic, saying: ``No doubt
gaps on all issues remain. I cannot say these gaps are easy to bridge
because
the issues are not easy.''

The Palestinians want to create a state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip,
which Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war.

Officials from the two sides said the major sticking points remained the
status of Arab East Jerusalem, which Israel occupied in 1967, the fate of
refugees, and security issues.

Palestinians Wary Of Sharon

If Barak wins the Israeli election, there will be continuity at peace talks.
If he loses, he will be caretaker prime minister until Sharon forms a
government.
The Palestinians have made clear they do not welcome the prospect of
Sharon
becoming prime minister. As defense minister in 1982, he failed to prevent a
massacre of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon after Israel had invaded its
northern neighbor.

Asked by La Repubblica if a Sharon victory would lead to war, Arafat said:
``Not a real war, but Sharon would trigger an escalation of the conflict...
With (Sharon) in power we would not have peace.''

U.S. President George W. Bush called Barak on Saturday and told him
Washington wanted peace in the Middle East based on a secure Israel. He
hoped
for a close relationship with Israel.

Bush's predecessor, Bill Clinton, was heavily involved in peace moves but it
is not clear how big a role Bush will play.

Chamish - Why The PLO Is
           Tunneling Under The
                   Temple Mount
                              By Barry Chamish
                           chamish@netvision.net.il
                                   1-27-01

The following is a brief extract from very long article I
completed for Fate Magazine. I wish I could send the full
text but I have a hard copy career to preserve.
Nonetheless, in light of the revelation that the PLO is
tunneling under the Holy Mount, I'd like to give my
faithful readers at least a clue as to why.

Let us begin with a compelling history of the Knights
Templar written by two Freemasons, Christopher Knight
and Robert Lomas, called The Second Messiah.
Summarized is their history of the organization:

The Templars were a poor chivalric order which
disdained materialism until their arrival in Jerusalem in
the early twelfth century on a papal crusade. Eleven
knights dug under the ruins of Solomon's Temple for
nine years and hit paydirt. Under the Temple Mount the
Templars discovered a network of tunnels where the
Jewish priests hid their treasures from the marauding
Romans in 70 AD. The knights not only uncovered some
of the gold and silver described in the Copper Scroll of
the Dead Sea Scrolls but the records of the first
Jerusalem church of Christianity. This according to
Knight and Lomas is precisely what they went digging
            for.

The first Bishop of the Jerusalem Church was Jesus'
brother James. He was aided by Jesus' other siblings, five
brothers and two sisters. After the Romans destroyed
Jerusalem and dispersed the Jews, James and his family
fled to France, a fact confirmed by the bestselling book
Holy Blood, Holy Grail. These descendants of the holy
Davidic line had the wherewithal to gain wealth
throughout Europe and buy vast properties. Over time
they constituted a good chunk of European royalty.

While professing whatever religion the state demanded,
first worshiping the pantheon of Roman Gods and later
papal Christianity, they secretly practised the Christianity
of the early Jerusalem church. These descendants of the
priestly line, now called themselves Rex Deus, and
passed on their traditions throughout the royal courts of
Europe where they ruled. The original Celt church was
founded by the Rex Deus, and St. Patrick of Ireland was
a Jew. Other Rex Deus included the Habsburgs, the
Stuarts of Scotland and today's King Juan Carlos of
Spain, who includes among his titles, Protector Of The
            Holy Places Of Jerusalem.

The Templars returned from their Crusade with vast
wealth uncovered under the Temple Mount and initiated
a monumental building program in Europe, which
ultimately resulted in the construction of over 250 castles
and Gothic churches. They now challenged the papacy
for political control of Europe, yet the usually jealous
Vatican allowed their power to grow unabated. Knight
and Lomas insist this is because the Templars had a huge
            advantage over Rome.

According to their version of events, the Knights
uncovered the original records of the Jerusalem Church
and they proved that the Vatican was not practising
Christianity as its founders intended. For example, a pope
with exclusive rights of divine interpretation was not part
of G-d's plan. If the scrolls were made public, they would
            jeopardize Rome's legitimacy.

In the fourteenth century, the French king known as
Philip the Fair coordinated a purge of the Templars in
coordination with the Holy See. Their properties were
seized and their leader, in fact the last Templar leader,
Jacques de Molay was brutally tortured by crucifixion
until he confessed to the alleged sins of his Order. He
survived the first round of torture and a linen cloth was
placed over him to absorb his blood and keep him warm.
This cloth became known as the Shroud of Turin and the
authors arguments for this claim are superbly grounded in
            fact.

A group of Templars led by the St. Clair clan escaped the
French siege by ship and landed in Scotland, a safe port
since it was ruled by the Rex Deus member, Robert the
Bruce. It must be noted that at his death, Robert the
Bruce's heart was transported to Jerusalem for burial.
Two versions of what happened to it exist. The first says
the deliverers of the heart were captured in Spain, the
second insists they made it and the heart lays buried in
            Jerusalem to this day.

According to Knight and Lomas, the French Templars
brought with them the damning scrolls from under the
Jerusalem Temple Mount and built a chapel in Rosslyn,
near Edinburgh to house them. The chapel, built by
William Sinclair (1415- 1482), which exists today, was
built according to the specifications of the Herodian
Temple and an exact duplicate of the Western Wall was
constructed alongside it. To hide their now-banned
Templar roots, the Knights formed a new organization,
Freemasonry, whose rites were precisely those set down
in the scrolls recovered from beneath Jerusalem's Temple
            Mount.

Scottish rite Masonry spread throughout Europe and
according to Knight and Lomas, much to the chagrin of
the Vatican. In their version of events, in 1717, the
pro-Catholic Hanoverian dynasty took over the British
crown and ordered vast changes in Masonic rites. The 33
Scottish degrees were reduced to just four in the new
English rites and all the secrets within the Jerusalem
scrolls were eliminated from lodge ceremonies. However,
other writers share a different version of events, insisting
the Templars and the Vatican remained partners
throughout their public trials. F. Tupper Saussy in his
excellent book, Rulers Of Evil writes:

"On March 22, 1312, Clement V dissolved the Knights
Templar with his decree Vox clamantis. But the
dissolution proved a mere formality to further appease
Philip (the Fair). More importantly, it permitted the
Templars, in other manifestations to continue enriching
the papacy...A subtle provision in Vox clamantis
transferred most Templar estates to the Knights of St.
John of Jerusalem. In Germany and Austria, the
            Templars became "Rosicrucians" and "Teutonic
Knights." Six centuries later, as the "Teutonic Order," the
Knights would provide the nucleus of Adolph Hitler's
political support in Munich and Vienna."

There is no question whatsoever that the Vatican wants
Israel off the Temple Mount and that the Israeli
leadership is accommodating its desire. But the PLO has
plans of its own. By the summer of 2000, they began
digging under the Temple Mount in earnest. Originally
they claimed they were simply expanding a mosque
under Solomon's Stables, beneath the Damascus Gate of
Jerusalem's walled Old City. However, the huge mounds
of earth and artifacts from the Second Temple that were
being dumped in nearby wadis betrayed a much more
            extensive plan.

On January 26, 2001, the Israeli government's television
outlet, Channel One, broadcast a video clip secretly
filmed under the Shrine of Omar, the 7th century Islamic
building which may have been deliberately constructed
over the Holy of Holies, the most sacred prayer room of
the ancient Temple. The video revealed a new and
massive tunnel aimed directly at the most sacred core of
            Solomon's and later, Herod's Temples.

The PLO is after not only the treasures buried beneath
the Temple to deplete their morally and financially
bankrupt regime of terror but must be looking for more
scrolls that can be used to blackmail the Vatican and thus
get their way in world diplomacy. This is why PM Barak
is willing to cede the surface on the Temple Mount to the
PLO but insists on keeping Israeli sovereignty below
            ground.

The Vatican is terrified that the Jews will uncover the
truth under the Temple, whatever it may be. It is
essential for them that Israel is removed from the Holy
Mount. And they are not alone in this desire.

On Jan. 4, 2001, Colin Grant published a full front page
article in the Glasgow Sunday Post. He revealed that the
Knights Templar, as descendents the Davidic line believe
they have the right to reclaim the Temple Mount as their
            true heritage:

"A spokesman for Militi Templi Scotia, the Scottish
Knights Templar admitted to the Sunday Post, 'We are
currently involved in an attempt to remove control of the
holy sites from the Israeli government. We believe they
should be administered by the United Nations and are
working with the UN and NATO to achieve that goal.'"

A secret Medieval battle over the Temple Mount is being
conducted in Israel today and unless it can be stopped,
this skirmish has the potential of dragging the whole
            planet into war.

Zhirinovsky Threatens U.S. with Wonder Weapons

The leader of the Liberal Democratic Party Vladimir Zhirinovsky announced at
a press conference in Moscow on Monday that Russia possesses a new
kind of weapon of mass destruction. ''The USA can make their ABM
systems, spend their money and end up losing their shirt, and we will raise a
tiny ball with our satellite and everybody will die in any city,'' Zhirinovsky
said.

He also predicted a breakthrough in the development of other cutting-edge
Russian technologies. Among them he mentioned ''cargo transportation at a
speed of 5 thousand kilometres per hour'' and ''generating electricity from air''.
''A light bulb will generate electricity and it will be on forever,'' the Russian
State Duma Deputy predicted. //Ekho Moskvy

Wow and to think that they are worried about a little defense system.
Why don't the just invent a magic wand to kill everybody in every city?

On the serious side. It people on his level are saying stuff like this
doesn't it show that too many of there people really do want to blow us
up? I would say that the time will not get any better to deploy the
system.

* NO MORE SLEEPING ON THE COUCH: Virginia
legislators narrowly passed a bill mandating that
"spaces such as kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms,
and family rooms shall not be occupied for sleeping
purposes," according to the Washington Post.
Submitted by Northern Virginia Senator Leslie Byrne,
a Democrat, the proposed law is aimed at preventing
overcrowding, lowered property values, and
neighborhood nuisances, supporters say. Opponents
claim the law is targeted, unfairly, at immigrant and
minority communities, and will also affect families
who care for elderly or disabled relatives. The
current rule in Fairfax, similar to surrounding
counties, allows no more than four people to live
under the same roof. The new bill faces a recount on
Monday. (Thanks, phre3e)

Special WorldNetDaily News Alert

CRAZY GENERALS
Last week, WND published two reports that provided multi-sourced
details about major military deployments in EUCOM -- the United
States' European Command -- that said the entire V Corps was being
sent with full gear to a major training base in southern Germany,
ostensibly in preparation for possible deployment to Israel, should
the situation there between Israelis and Palestinians (and other Arab
neighbors) degenerate into another Mideast war.

Among the details, two major "training exercises" -- Pentagon buzzword
for "operations" -- were being staged simultaneously, and, sources
said, could be "combined" into one single operation -- a "Hail Mary
plan" -- if need be to support the Jewish state.

Though the Pentagon has officially denied knowledge of such
developments, a highly placed military source informs WorldNetDaily
that our reports "are driving the generals nuts" -- which generally
means the stories are much more accurate than the Pentagon would like
them to be.

MEIN KAMPF'S COMEBACK
Although a Czech book publisher received a suspended jail sentence and
$50,000 fine for publishing Adolph Hitler's autobiography Mein Kampf,
in the Middle East =96 especially in the Palestinian areas =96 it's a
different story. In fact, the book is a bestseller.

When Mein Kampf ("My struggle") was first published in 1925, calling
for the extermination of Jews, few took the author seriously. A decade
later, Adolf Hitler began to implement his horrific plan.

According to the respected research group at MEMRI.org, "an Arabic
translation of Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf is being distributed by
Al-Shurouq, a Ramallah-based book distributor, to East Jerusalem and
territories controlled by the Palestinian Authority."

Previously banned by Israel, the book has been allowed by the PA and,
as recently as late 1999, was 6th on the Palestinian best-seller list.
"Bisan publishers in Lebanon first published this edition in 1963 and
again in 1995," said MEMRI. "The book costs about $10. The cover =85
shows a picture of Hitler, a swastika, and the title in both German
and Arabic."

Check out this introduction written by the translator, Luis Al-Haj:

"Adolf Hitler was not an ordinary man to be [forgotten] by the wheels
of time... Adolf Hitler does not belong to the German people alone, he
is one of the few great men who almost stopped the motion of history,
altered its course, and changed the face of the world. Hence, he
belongs to history."

"Hitler the soldier left behind not only a legend stained by tragedy
itself; the tragedy of a state whose dreams were shattered, a regime
whose pillars were torn down, and a political party that was crushed.
Hitler was a man of ideology who bequeathed an ideological heritage
whose decay is inconceivable. This ideological heritage includes
politics, society, science, culture, and war as science and culture."

"The National Socialism that Hitler preached for and whose
characteristics were presented in his book, "My Struggle," and whose
principles he explained in his speeches before he took power, as well
as during the 13 years he spent at the head of the German nation --
this National Socialism did not die with the death of its herald.
Rather, its seeds multiplied under each star =85"

It seems anti-Semitism is condemned everywhere on earth -- except
where it matters most, in the Middle East.

THE FORTRESS
I'll bet many of you missed one of our prize "commentaries" of the
week.

It was written by a 17-year-old home-schooled senior, Amy Stanford.
And it was called "The Fortress: An allegorical short story." Now I
agree that headline would put me off, too. But give it a chance if you
missed it Wednesday.

This is a gem -- written by a future WorldNetDaily.com journalist. It
is a testament to the power of home-schooling. It would be a great
read if it were written by a tenured literature professor.

By the way, Amy reads WorldNetDaily.com every day ... naturally.

Experts say recent worldwide quakes not related

http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20010126/sc/quake_geology_dc_1.html

DENVER, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Is the earth coming apart at its geological
seams? With thousands feared dead after a powerful earthquake struck
India on Friday, another that earlier devastated El Salvador, a tremor
off Kyushu Island, Japan, and even a minor quake in Ohio late on
Thursday people start wondering. Relax.

"These earthquakes are not related," said Waverly Person, director of
the Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colorado, which tracks
earthquakes worldwide. "We locate about 50 quakes every day. But you
only hear about them if people are killed or if they're felt very
strongly in the United States," Person said, rushing from one media
interview to another.

The center was established in Washington in 1966 and has been working
out of Golden since 1973. It tracks earthquakes worldwide and often
provides the first news of a tremor. Phone banks started lighting up
at the center, operated by the U.S. Geological Service, before dawn on
Friday with news that the worst earthquake in 50 years had hit India.
The tremor may have killed more than 1,500 people, but officials in
India said the final toll may be much higher.

The quake was measured at 7.9 on the Richter scale by the earthquake
center. The most murderous recorded quake in history killed an
estimated 830,000 people in Shaanxi, central China, on February 2,
1556. Events ranking about 4.5 or greater -- of which there may be
several thousand every year -- are strong enough to be recorded by
sensitive instruments all over the world.

Person said there is no reason to believe the quake that rocked El
Salvador on Jan. 13 also triggered events that led to Friday's
earthquake in the Indian sub-continent. The quakes occurred on
separate tectonic plates and a quake on one does not set up a domino
effect in another.

According to records, about 18 major quakes -- measuring between 7.0
and 7.9 on the Richter scale and one great quake, measuring 8.0 and
above -- can be expected each year. Many of these, however, may strike
uninhabited parts of the world. But does it make life scarier for
people living in quake zones? "What it does is bring forth awareness
in places like California and Alaska. It brings it up in their mind,"
Person said. "But they"re not more afraid," he added.

Jesus Christ Known to 11 percent of World's Population
January 25, 2001

http://news.crosswalk.com/religion/item/0,1875,318221,00.htm

Today there are some 680 million Evangelical Christians, or people
who started to follow Christ after a personal conversion. That is
11.1 percent of the world's population. According to missiologist
Ralph Winter, only 1 percent of the world's peoples had a
personal relationship with Jesus Christ in the year 1430. The rate
of increase currently is about 7 percent per year.

In an age of increasing individualism in religion, the anti-
institutionalism, and the growing rejection of religious bigotry,
loosely organized forms of Christianity are experiencing a boom.
The strongest growth is currently in the following areas: house
churches, in apartments, bars, cafes; underground churches,
such as those known only to insiders, are forming not only in
China, Indonesia, Cuba and India, but also in the "social
underground" in the West; youth churches and post-modern
churches, planted by youths - in the U.S. alone, it is reported that
some 5,000 churches have been planted in the past four years;
cell churches, with a focus on discipling people in cell groups and
growth through cell multiplication; and indigenous (native)
churches, led by nationals, without intervention or startup help
from other churches.

China has the world's highest population, (1,262,556,787), and
also the highest number of Christians. Due to persecution, which
gives rise to highly secret organizational structures, and, in some
cases, the explosive growth dynamics of the house church
movement, experts' estimates range between 86 and 150 million
Christians in China, or 4 to 12 percent of their population.

The harvest truly is plenteous but the laborers are few. (Matthew
9:37) According to the U.S. Census Office, the world population
on Dec. 31, 2000, was just under 6.12 billion - 6,118,958,932 ….
and 63 percent of that -- 3.8 billion -- are under the age of 34.
"Yesterday's youth culture is becoming mainstream, with similar
values, a common language (English) and a common
communication medium (the Internet) around the globe." It is
reported that Christian radio stations now reach 99 percent of the
total world population; and missiologists such as Patrick
Johnstone estimate that between 75 and 85 percent of the
world's peoples have heard the gospel at least once. These
interesting stats are from DAWN News Worldwide.

A fruitful church, and Brazil's third largest church, after the
Catholic Church and the Assemblies of God, is the Universal
Kingdom of God Church. It is an independent church with an
evangelical base and was founded on July 9, 1977. To date it has
planted over 11,250 churches with a total attendance of between
4.5 and 5 million. According to Pastor Paul Junior of the 'Sal de
Terra' fellowship in Uberlandia, the church has developed one of
the first purely Brazilian theologies and reaches a large number of
Brazilians with its easily understood and relevant messge. It
owns the nation's third-largest television station, sets many
examples in its campaigns for social justice and is a prime
example of how indigenous churches can change the ecumenical
landscape in only a few years - and reach millions for Jesus.

UFO Shuts Down Russian Airport

http://www.russiatoday.com/news.php3?id=270624

MOSCOW, Jan 27, 2001 -- (Agence France Presse) An airport in southern
Siberia was shut down for an hour and a half on Friday when an
unidentified flying object (UFO) was detected hovering above its
runway, the Interfax news agency reported.

The crew of an Il-76 cargo aircraft refused to take off, claiming
they saw a luminescent object hovering above the runway of the
Siberia's Barnaul airport, local aviation company director Ivan
Komarov was quoted as saying.

The crew of another cargo plane, refusing to use the runway for the
same reason, landed their jet at another airport, Komarov said.

The UFO took off and vanished from the airport 90 minutes later,
according to the report. ((c) 2001 Agence France Presse)

Subject: [bprlist] A Story with no Ending
From: owner-bpr@philologos.org
Date: Sun, 28 Jan 2001 13:42:18 -0000

A Story with no Ending

"And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother
of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come
and anoint him. And very early in the morning the first day of the
week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. And they
said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door
of the sepulchre? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was
rolled away: for it was very great. And entering into the sepulchre,
they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long
white garment; and they were affrighted. And he saith unto them, Be
not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is
risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. But go
your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into
Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you. And they went
out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were
amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were
afraid." (Mark 16:1-8)

And thus ends the book of Mark in at least two of the earliest Greek
manuscripts. However, other manuscripts have additional verses (9-
20) that appear to have been added on to the original ending by
another writer. The New Commentary on the Whole Bible discusses this
issue:

"...Debate still continues about verses 9 through 20...Scholars have
demonstrated that these verses are narratively and stylistically
incongruous with 16:1-8. Indeed, any fair-minded reader can detect
its non-Marcan flavor. The major consensus is that Mark did not write
16:9-20; it is the work of another writer (probably in the early
second century) who provided an extended conclusion derived from
various sources, including the other Gospels. Some have considered
this appendage to be worthy of inclusion in the NT canon because they
believe that (1) Mark himself, for whatever reason, was not able to
complete his Gospel and thus had to stop at verse 8, or (2) the
autographed ending was permanently lost and thus needed to be
replaced. (The second conjecture is the more likely of the two
because the early Christians used the codex [equivalent to our modern
book with a spine] for making copies of the Gospels, and the last
page of any of the Gospels could have easily been lost.) Almost all
readers would have to admit that it is quite unlikely that Mark would
stop his Gospel so abruptly. How could the Gospel close on such a
negative note of fear and bewilderment? Undoubtedly, Mark wrote more
or intended to write more, but of such we have no record. Since the
two earliest and best manuscripts conclude with verse 8, we should
accept this testimony-until more light can be shed on this textual
problem."

The commentary above brings up an interesting question: How could
Mark end his Gospel so abruptly? Why did he end on such a negative
note of "fear and bewilderment"? Surely this was not his intent, and
therefore it is concluded that for whatever reason the author of Mark
was unable to finish his book or perhaps a page has been lost or torn
out my mistake. And so a later writer took it upon himself to fill in
the blanks.

Comments regarding this point in The Bible Knowledge Commentary notes
that the abrupt ending "is consistent with Mark's style and
punctuates his development of the themes of fear and astonishment
throughout his Gospel. The reader is left to ponder with awe the
meaning of the empty tomb as interpreted by the angel's revelatory
message."

After reading "Mark as Story" by David Rhoads, Joanna Dewey, and
Donald Michie, the abrupt ending is completely within Mark's style
and therefore a literary purpose was in mind. They write:

"We have said that the narrative works to invite the ideal reader to
become a faithful follower of Jesus through the act of reading. By
staying with the story, the reader remains faithful to the end,
following the women to the grave. At the grave comes the
announcement the readers have come to hope for and expect: "He was
raised!" God has the last word on Jesus' conflict with the
authorities, and the victory is God's. This last word can become a
first word for the ideal reader, who will now follow...

"The young man's announcement that Jesus 'is going ahead of you to
Galilee' means that Jesus is still going ahead of them and calling
them to follow...If the women did not convey this assurance to the
disciples, nevertheless, the reader has heard it. The ideal reader is
assured that whatever their own fear and flight and silence might
have been or might yet be, nevertheless Jesus will still be calling
them to follow him. The ending of Mark points the readers to a new
beginning -- back to the beginning of the story, back to Galilee, to
begin again the quest to follow Jesus faithfully."

The authors of "Mark as Story" then point out that an ironic
unexpected twist occurs in the narrative. The readers of Mark expect
the grave to be empty, but the silence of the women was not expected
at all. Throughout the book of Mark, Jesus has commanded people to
keep quiet, but they proclaimed anyway. Now the command is to
proclaim but the women at the grave say nothing "for they trembled
and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they
were afraid." (Mark 16:8)

The story seems to be without a resolution. Were the disciples told
of this good news? Were others told? Who is going to proclaim the
good news of Jesus' resurrection? This is where the author of Mark
as a great story teller becomes apparent. He has built the story to
a climax only to have it abruptly end ... and for what purpose?

The authors of "Mark as Story" write: "...the ideal readers are
called to finish the story, to proclaim what happened. The readers
alone have remained faithful to the last and are now left with the
choice to flee with the women or to proclaim boldy in spite of fear
and death. And the ideal reader will choose to proclaim! When all the
characters in the story have failed, the ideal readers will be the
faithful. The ideal readers have followed Jesus faithfully --
received the rule of God, understood the costs and demands of
following, and been empowered to proclaim. At the end, the ideal
readers are committed, in Jesus' absence, to live a life like Jesus
lived, by faith in God, until Jesus returns." (pp. 142-143)

The reason for the abrupt ending is now obvious.

Mark's story is looking for the ideal reader.

numerical perfection of God) proves conclusively that the disputed verses
were included in Mark and that without them, God's numerical perfection is
broken.

Ancient prophecies play into modern Old City land dispute=20
By ELLEN KNICKMEYER Associated Press writer

http://www.courierpress.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi?
200101/27+jersu012701_fandv.html+20010127

=20
JERUSALEM =97 Negotiations over a disputed Jerusalem holy site are=20
failing to take into account its central role in the end-times=20
prophecies of Judaism, Christianity and Islam alike =97 or to calm=20
those who want to see the prophecies played out, an Israeli author=20
warns.=20

"People's beliefs are a strategic fact when you're dealing with=20
Jerusalem, the Holy Land, and the Temple Mount," said Gershom=20
Gorenberg, an expert on apocalyptic beliefs. Backed by senior Israeli=20
security officials, Gorenberg warns that a U.S. proposal for Israel=20
to cede the sacred hilltop, known to Jews as Temple Mount and to=20
Muslims as the Haram as-Sharif, could spur extremists to desperate=20
action.=20

The holy site at the center of peace talks and prophecy lies in a=20
corner of Jerusalem's Old City, 36 walled acres on which early Islam=20
raised gleaming mosques over the ruins of Judaism's two biblical=20
Temples. It's Islam's third-most holy site, Judaism's first. It's=20
also the single stage on which three different plays unfold =97 the=20
final-days beliefs of the world's major monotheistic faiths,=20
Gorenberg writes in a new book, "The End of Days."=20

For Christian and Jewish end-timers, Israel's proposed concession of=20
the Temple Mount to the Palestinians threatens to rewrite the ending=20
to what they see as a divine script:=20

? For Jews, the day a third Temple rises on the site of the old is=20
inextricably linked to the coming of the Messiah.=20

? In Christian doomsday theology, Jews' construction of the third=20
Temple would be another ordained step toward the Antichrist, the=20
Apocalypse and the Second Coming =97 as was the founding of the state=20
of Israel itself.=20

? In some Muslim beliefs, meanwhile, Jerusalem will be the field for=20
the final battle between good and evil, Gorenberg said.=20

Two former Israeli security officials recently warned Prime Continued=20
from Page C1=20

Minister Ehud Barak of the possible danger in negotiations over the=20
site's fate.=20

Assaf Hefetz, former national police commissioner, and Carmi Gilon,=20
ex-chief of the security agency Shin Bet, said in a letter to Barak=20
that an extremist attack on the hilltop's mosques would likely "lead=20
to all-out war and unleash destructive forces that would imperil=20
Israel's existence."=20

"A single fanatic can bring horrible things on us," warned Rabbi=20
Shmuel Rabinovitz, overseer of the Temple Mount's adjacent Western=20
Wall.=20

A recent TV panel discussion on the subject with some of Israel's=20
leading rabbis opened with a clip from a 1999 apocalyptic movie, "The=20
Omega Code," showing a terrorist blasting away the hilltop's gilded=20
Dome of the Rock. One of the panelists, Yehuda Etzion, said he=20
believed one day the mosques would be razed, but stopped short of=20
saying he and his followers would do it themselves. "There will come=20
a day when the mount will be purified," said Etzion, who served four=20
years in prison, in part for plotting to blow up the hilltop's Al=20
Aqsa Mosque. "How this will happen, who will do it and when he will=20
do it =97 I don't know," Etzion said, "but ... the mount will be=20
purified. That means that the mosques will be removed from it."=20

Israel's chief rabbi, Israel Meir Lau, calls the proposal that Israel=20
cede sovereignty of the site "sacrilege" but condemns suggestions of=20
attempts on the mosques. "The Temple will be built, soon, in our=20
days =97 not at the cost of bloodshed," Lau said.=20

There is great diversity among Christian groups concerning end-time=20
prophecy, with some giving it very little emphasis and others making=20
it the core of their belief. Those who believe the founding of Israel=20
is prophecy fulfilled say the hilltop cannot be entrusted to Muslims.=20
The Israelis "go against their own Scriptures if they don't (keep the=20
mount)," said David Parsons, spokesman for the International=20
Christian Embassy, a staunchly pro-Israeli group.=20

History proves the volatility of the site, which Israel left in the=20
Palestinians' day-to-day control when it took east Jerusalem in the=20
1967 war.=20

In 1929, when Jews raised the blue-and-white flag of the Zionist=20
movement at the Western Wall, the 1? weeks of rioting that followed=20
killed 133 Jews and 116 Arabs. In 1996, Israel's opening of a tunnel=20
just outside the compound sparked riots that killed 58 Palestinians=20
and 15 Israelis.=20

It was right-wing Likud opposition leader Ariel Sharon's Sept. 28=20
visit to the compound, in the center of a phalanx of Israeli police,=20
that touched off the current Israeli-Palestinian clashes.=20

Adnan Husseini, the Noble Sanctuary's chief guardian, says=20
Palestinians are prepared to deal forcefully with any future attempt=20
on the shrine: "The variety of ways by which the extremists have=20
tried to harm the shrine has deepened our ability to contain any=20
attacks," Husseini said. "Now we are experts."=20

Though only a small minority of Israelis actively anticipate=20
rebuilding of the Temple, Gorenberg noted "the power of the symbol=20
that works below the surface" on a much wider circle.=20

In early January, a rally against President Clinton's Temple Mount=20
proposal drew an estimated 200,000 Israelis to the walls of the Old=20
City =97 one of Jerusalem's largest gatherings in modern times.=20

"Everyone, from the black-hatted Orthodox Jew, to any one of the=20
hundreds of other kinds of people on the other side of the spectrum,=20
has woken up to this," said Joel Fogel, a New York-born religious=20
student. He was drawn to the Old City's Jewish Quarter, where=20
believers have assembled an array of religious items =97 including flax=20
robes woven for the priests and lyres carved for the temple music =97=20
to await the eventual rebuilding of the Temple.=20

PA mufti denies 'Post' report on Temple Mount
By Jerusalem Post Staff and Itim
JERUSALEM (January 28) - Palestinian Authority Mufti Ikrima Sabri on Friday denied a report in that day's The Jerusalem Post that the Supreme Moslem Council had stated in a 1930 pamphlet that the Jews had an undisputable historic connection with the Temple Mount.

According to Itim, Sabri said the report was untrue and taken out of context.

The Post article quoted an English-language guide for tourists, published in 1930 by the Supreme Moslem Council, which states: "The site['s]... identity with the site of Solomon's Temple is beyond dispute," while a footnote refers the reader to Samuel II:26:25.

Sabri told Itim that the council's booklet had been published only one year after the Arab disturbances of 1929, which, he said, the Arabs called the "Burak Rebellion" (Western Wall Rebellion). Sabri claimed that, at the time, the League of Nations had decided that the Western Wall was Moslem,
adding that Jews were permitted to pray there on condition they made no changes to the site; particularly not setting up tables or benches. Blowing the shofar was expressly forbidden.

Sabri also told Itim that the British-appointed Shaw Commission had come to the same conclusion and had decided that the Western Wall was part of Haram al-Sharif [the Temple Mount], and undeniably Moslem property.

Sabri told Itim that neither the League of Nations nor the Shaw Commission had mentioned the word Kotel in reference to the Western Wall, only the Arabic al-Burak. The site, he reportedly said, was one of the holiest in Islam, since it was from there that the Prophet Mohammed rose up to heaven.

Sabri added that all these developments had come about when the Supreme Moslem Council was headed by Hajj Amin al-Husseini and that it was inconceivable that Husseini had given Jews any rights at all to the Temple Mount.

Itim noted that the Arab Revolt had broken out on August 16, 1929, following an impromptu Arab demonstration organized in response to a Jewish march to the Western Wall on the previous day, Tisha Be'av. The demonstrators were also protesting the expansion of the Jewish Agency. During the protest,
Jewish religious objects were destroyed near the Wall.

A few days later, gangs of armed Arabs attacked Jews in Jerusalem, Hebron, Safed, and farming settlements, killing 133 Jews and wounding 339. The Shaw Commission, headed by Sir Walter Shaw, was appointed by the British Colonial Office to investigate the riots, and it concluded that the riots had
resulted from Arab fears for their political and economic rights in the face of the development of Palestine as a Jewish national home.

The commission gave the Arab leaders a slap on the wrist, and skipped over the British authorities' responsibility for the events. The League of Nations' Mandate Commission later sharply criticized the Shaw Commission.

Ha'aretz: Barak vows not to join Sharon-led unity government

By Yossi Verter Ha'aretz Political Correspondent Ha'aretz 28 January 2001

Prime Minister Ehud Barak said last night for the first time that he would
not join a national unity government led by Ariel Sharon, since its policies
would be too extremist. Speaking to a group of writers and performing
artists at his official Jerusalem residence, Barak also reiterated that he
would not step aside to allow Shimon Peres to run and indicated that he
would not leave politics if defeated on February 6.

Referring to belligerent statements made by Sharon's likely coalition party,
MK Avigdor Lieberman, Barak said that Sharon, if elected, would form a
"Tehran-Aswan government." (Lieberman has mentioned the Iranian and Egyptian
cities as potential targets for Israeli retaliatory attacks.)

Barak expressed confidence that his campaign would coalesce during the last
five days before the elections and said that the current gap is really less
than the surveys indicate.

Document:Full text of the statement by Israeli and Palestinian negotiators
as talks end in Taba

The Associated Press 28 January 2001

Following is the text of a joint statement released last night by Israeli
and Palestinian negotiators at the end of their six-day peace talks in Taba:

The Israeli and Palestinian delegations conducted during the last six days
serious, deep and practical talks with the aim of reaching a permanent and
stable agreement between the two parties.

The Taba talks were unprecedented in their positive atmosphere and
expression of mutual willingness to meet the national, security and
existential needs of each side. Given the circumstances and time
constraints, it proved impossible to reach understandings on all issues,
despite the substantial progress that was achieved in each of the issues
discussed.

The sides declare that they have never been closer to reaching an agreement
and it is thus our shared belief that the remaining gaps could be bridged
with the resumption of negotiations following the Israeli elections.

The two sides take upon themselves to return to normalcy and to establish
security situation on the ground through the observation of their mutual
commitments in the spirit of the Sharm al-Sheikh memorandum.

The negotiation teams discussed four main themes: refugees, security,
borders and Jerusalem, with a goal to reach a permanent agreement that will
bring an end to the conflict between them and provide peace to both people.
The two sides took into account the ideas suggested by President Clinton
together with their respective qualifications and reservations. On all these
issues there was substantial progress in the understanding of the other
side's positions and in some of them the two sides grew closer.

As stated above, the political timetable prevented reaching an agreement on
all the issues. However, in light of the significant progress in narrowing
the differences between the sides, the two sides are convinced that in a
short period of time and given an intensive effort and the acknowledgment of
the essential and urgent nature of reaching an agreement, it will be
possible to bridge the differences remaining and attain a permanent
settlement of peace between them.

In this respect, the two sides are confident that they can begin and move
forward in this process at the earliest practical opportunity. The Taba
talks conclude an extensive phase in the Israeli-Palestinian permanent
status negotiations with a sense of having succeeded in rebuilding trust
between the sides and with the notion that they were never closer in
reaching an agreement between them than today. We leave Taba in a spirit of
hope and mutual achievement, acknowledging that the foundations have been
laid both in reestablishing mutual confidence and in having progressed in a
substantive engagement on all core issues.

The two sides express their gratitude to President Hosni Mubarak for hosting
and facilitating these talks. They also express their thanks to the European
Union for its role in supporting the talks.

Ha'aretz: Right prepares plan to safeguard Jerusalem

By Nadav Shragai Ha'aretz Correspondent Ha'aretz 28 January 2001

The Yesha Council and other Jewish groups are drafting a Jerusalem action
plan that would be implemented during the first 100 days of an Ariel Sharon
government. During meetings held in recent weeks, delegates from the Yesha
Council, Ateret Cohanim, Elad, Beit Orot and other groups have decided to
demand concrete measures demonstrating that a Sharon government has no
intention of compromising on Jerusalem.

Assuming Sharon is elected, the list of demands will be submitted to
right-wing political parties immediately after February 6, and these parties
will then use them as a basis for coalition bargaining with Sharon and
Likud. The demands include:

+ The removal of various Palestinian police and security forces from
Jerusalem. Activities of these security groups - which include exposing
Palestinian collaborators with Israel and preventing Israeli-Palestinian
land transactions - are said to have been tacitly condoned by the Barak and
Netanyahu governments.

+ The closure of offices connected directly or indirectly to the Palestinian
Authority, including the Orient House. These facilities work in areas such
as housing, education, transportation, community and family services,
health, and planning. The Orient House offers arbitration services for East
Jerusalemites that are used as an alternative to those provided by Israel's
legal system.

+ Decisive steps to crack down on illegal Arab construction in Jerusalem
which, the Yesha Council and other groups contend, is motivated by a
political desire to seize areas slated for Jewish settlement.

+ Approval of the second stage of construction of the Har Homa neighborhood.

+ Creation of a continuous Jewish construction belt linking the Pisgat Ze'ev
and French Hill neighborhoods.

+ Approval of plans for construction of the Jewish neighborhood at Abu Dis.

+ Support for residence in the new Jewish neighborhood at Ras al Amud
(Ma'aleh Hazeitim) construction of which is now being completed.

+ Support for groups dedicated to Jewish settlement and housing in the City
of David (Silwan), and in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City.
Drafting this list of demands for Sharon's first 100 days, delegates from
the Yesha Council and other associations have stressed this clause, out of
concern that the Barak government has agreed to place the Old City's Muslim
and Christian Quarters under Palestinian sovereignty. The groups intend to
demand government support for the purchase of Old City property, intended to
increase the Jewish presence in the two quarters.

+ Conferral of government subsidies and tax relief for the industrial zone
and airport in Atarot, located north of the city's center.

+ Implementation of the "A-1" plan to link Ma'aleh Adumim, across the Green
Line, to Jerusalem by constructing commercial and residential facilties
along a 10,000 dunam stretch of land. This plan was approved during Yitzhak
Rabin's term as prime minister in the 1990s, but awaits implementation.

Ha'aretz: All Israeli Arab parties call for abstention from PM election
By Ori Nir and Jalal Banna, Ha'aretz Correspondents Ha'aretz (Bulletin) 27
January 2001

The Arab Democratic Party decided Saturday to call on its voters to boycott
the upcoming prime ministerial election. In doing so, the Arab Democratic
Party joined the rest of the Arab parties calling on their constituents not
to support Ehud Barak or Ariel Sharon.

Ten days before the election, all the Arab parties and non-parliamentary
political movements in the Arab sector have called on their supporters to
abstain from the prime ministerial election. The only differences between
the parties lie in whether to boycott the election or to express their
protest against both candidates by submitting a blank ballot.

This united protest front by the Arab parties was reached after the Arab
Democratic Party followed in the footsteps of Hadash, the largest and most
diverse party in the Arab sector, which decided over the weekend to urge its
supporters to submit a blank ballot.

In opposition to Hadash, whose call for a blank ballot leaves room for a
change of mind if any sort of agreement is reached with the Palestinian
Authority before the election, the Arab Democratic Party called for an
absolute boycott of the election and did not acknowledge the possibility of
an agreement with the Palestinians.

Senior members of the Arab Democratic Party said their decision had been
made after long deliberation and differences of opinion. Some members
supported the blank ballot option. The decision of Hadash surprised the Arab
sector even though the party's leaders have supported this position for over
a month, despite the fact that it strikes a blow to Barak. In recent days,
Barak supporters had expressed hope that Hadash would decide to urge its
constituents to support Barak.

Without the support and assistance of Hadash, Barak's staff will have to
rely on Labor and Meretz supporters in the Arab sector as well as a limited
number of independents who support Barak.

Thousands of Balad (National Democratic Alliance) activists demonstrated
Saturday in Nazereth with the slogan "Boycott the election and the Zionist
parties." The demonstration began with a procession down the main street of
the city and ended with speeches by senior members of Balad.

Balad Chairman Dr. Azmi Bishara called for boycotting the prime ministerial
election and sharply criticized the "historical leaders of the Palestinian
nation" and members of it, such as Nayef Hawatmeh, who called on Israeli
Arabs to support Barak. With regard to fears that Sharon would win the
election, Bishara said, "Both candidates are bad. Are they trying to scare
us? We are stronger and more resistant than Sharon."

IMRA background: Taba press conference microcosm of Oslo process fantasy

Aaron Lerner Date: 27 January 2001

This evening Israel Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami and PA official
Abu Ala (Ahmed Qureia) appeared in a joint press conference tonight
in Taba to mark the ending of the latest round of negotiations.

Ben Ami said that "We have never been closer to an agreement than we
are now . . . "If we had quality political time, we could definitely
reach an agreement." Ben-Ami noted that the details of this
"progress" (Israeli concessions?) would not be shared with the
Israeli public.

In sharp contrast, Chief Palestinian negotiator Abu Ala said that
there remain sharp differences on such issues as the right of return
(the Palestinians insisting on it and Israel refusing to accept it)
and that it was not clear that agreement is in fact possible.

Abu Ala declared that "The outcomes of the negotiations are binding
for both sides, so they can resume from the point that they stopped
at today." In reply to a reporter's question at the press conference,
Abu Ala threatened that if a Sharon Government opts not to continue
the talks from Israel's concessions that the Palestinians would
pursue their goal "using all means". Senior diplomatic correspondent
Yoni Ben Menachem noted that this was, in effect, the threat of war.

Ironically, Ben Ami mentioned the restoration of confidence with the
Palestinians the same day that it was revealed the Yasser Arafat's
elite Force 17 has been behind most of the recent successful attacks
against Israel. This was not raised in the questions at the press
conference.

The Barak campaign now enters the last days of the campaign with the
claim that the Israeli public faces the choice between Barak and war.
The Taba press conference illustrates to the Israeli public that, in
truth, with the continued Palestinian insistence on demands NO
Israeli government can accept, the Israeli public faces the choice
between war under Barak or war under Sharon.

Polls indicate that the public preference for Sharon over Barak is
GREATER if the question is choosing a leader for war rather than
negotiations.

Interview: Former GSS Dpty. Dir. Ezra- Arafat responsible for Force 17
attacks

Aaron Lerner Date: 27 January 2001

Background (source: Ha'aretz bulletin today):

The Shin Bet security service confirmed that six members of Force 17,
Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's elite security force,
were arrested for the shooting and killing at least seven Israelis in
the Ramallah and Nablus areas.

Among other incidents, they are suspected of executing an attack last
November next to the Ofra settlement, in which two soldiers and a
civilian woman were killed, and are also suspected of killing Ariel
Jerafi, 40, a civilian from Petah Tikvah working for the Israel
Defense Forces, who was shot dead while driving near the Tapuah
Junction. They are also suspected of other murders, including that of
Binyamin Kahane, son of assassinated extremist Rabbi Meir Kahane, and
his wife Talia, while they were driving next to the Ofra settlement,
where they lived.

Prime Minister Ehud Barak said the attacks were apparently not
planned by Force 17 as such but by people from the organization.

A senior member of the group, Ahmed Ramdour, was killed this week in
Ramallah from an accidental weapons discharge. Palestinian sources
say a bullet from one of the unit's members hit him, though
investigations are still underway.

[Force 17 underwent considerable CIA training.]
+++

IMRA interviewed deputy GSS chief Likud MK Gideon Ezra, in Hebrew, on
January 27:

IMRA: Do you buy Barak's claim that 6 members of Force 17 acted
outside of the framework of Force 17?

Ezra: I do not know. I am convinced that Arafat knew or their
commanders knew about their activities. I am certain about this.
They used the weapons that Israel allowed them to bring in.

Without any doubt Arafat should be blamed for the activities of this
cell.

IMRA: Does Force 17 have a lot of discipline?

Ezra: It is the force with the most discipline. This is the closest
force to Arafat.

The Israel Security Agency (ISA) and IDF forces arrested a number of
terrorists, who are suspected of perpetrating many shootings that have
killed and wounded Israelis

(Communicated by the Defense Minister's Media Adviser)

Jerusalem, 26 January 2001

[IMRA: The press release neglects to mention that Force 17 is Arafat's top
military force, CIA trained, with the highest level of discipline of all the
Palestinian forces.]

The Israel Security Agency (ISA) and IDF forces in Judea and
Samaria have recently uncovered and arrested a number of
terrorists, who are suspected of perpetrating many shootings that
have killed and wounded Israeli soldiers and civilians.

Six members of the terror cell are currently being interrogated
by the Israel Security Agency. An additional terrorist, Ahmed
Gandor, was killed this week in Ramallah, and according to the
Palestinians he died as a result of a discharged bullet. The cell
belongs to Force 17, and its members are suspected of
perpetrating shooting attacks in the Ramallah area and in the

FILM GIANT YORAM GLOBUS SUED BY ACTIVIST GROUP FOR CENSORSHIP OF POLITICAL
ADVERTISEMENT

For Immediate Release January 28, 2001

A law suit was filed in the Petah Tikva Magistrate's Court today against the
Golan-Globus Company over its refusal to screen a political ad in its movie
theatres. In the legal complaint brought by the activist group Shalom
Le'Dorot it is alleged that Israel's largest theatre chain pulled the short
film, which harshly criticized the Oslo Accords and terrorist leader Yassir
Arafat, after its president Yoram Globus viewed the ad and found it
personally against his own political views.

Initially, Shalom Le'Dorot entered into an agreement to have its film shown
in 260 theatres across Israel in the weeks leading up to the February 6th,
national elections. However, when the theatres owned by the Golan-Globus
chain received the film they notified Shalom Le'Dorot of their refusal to
screen it. Letters from lawyers for the group went unanswered by the
theatre chain.

Today's lawsuit claims that the Golan-Globus company, which owns over 110
theatres, controls such a large share of the market that they virtually
constitute a monopoly in the Israeli movie industry. Moreover, their
refusal to project the film piece is an unfair restriction on political
speech at a time when Israelis are going to the polls in the most decisive
election in the State's history. Shalom Le'Dorot charges that the company
is allowing its own political views to dictate what hundred of thousands of
Israeli theatre goers will see and hear.

Israeli born Yoram Globus, along with his cousin Menachem Golan, traveled
to the United States in the 1970s and formed the Cannon Group which became a
major Hollywood film production company. The pair produced numerous
blockbuster hit films before breaking up the company in 1986. Their jointly
owned Israeli theatre chain has managed to successfully control a majority
of Israel's movie theatres.

The attorney for the plaintiffs, Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, has said that she:
"anticipates that the company will contact her to try and work out an
agreement about screening the film. After all, what theatre chain wants to
publicly be condemned of censuring a film piece right before an election?"
