MARY HAS APPEAL FOR OTHER RELIGIONS
Lourdes Conference Draws Various Faiths

LOURDES, France, JUNE 12, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The Blessed Virgin Mary is
a starting point for presenting the Christian message to believers of other
religions, said a Vatican official returning from an interfaith conference at
Lourdes.

Cardinal Francis Arinze, president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious
Dialogue, delivered a key address at the conference June 7-8.

In an interview with Vatican Radio in Rome, he noted that Mary was a young
Jewess, faithful to the tradition of her fathers. Yet, he said, it is interesting to
note that the Koran, the sacred book of Islam, mentions her 34 times
"always with great respect. She is regarded as a virgin, full of faith, obedient
to God."

Buddhists do not have a figure that corresponds to the Virgin of Christian
faith, but their religiosity appreciates the feminine values proper to Mary,
such as compassion, maternity and piety, something that can help them
understand her witness, Cardinal Arinze explained.

In Indian religions, there is also an image of feminine cult that includes
femininity, maternity, fertility and piety, the cardinal added.

The conference at Lourdes was organized by the local diocese in
cooperation with the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. It gathered
experts to study Mary´s role in ecumenical dialogue and in relations among
religions.

On the first day, the sessions focused on Mary in ecumenical dialogue. The
debate centered on "The Virgin and the Call to Christian Unity," as well as
the importance of icons for the Oriental Churches and their message.

Participants in the debates included Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican and
Lutheran representatives and theologians, as well as those of other Christian
confessions of various countries, the majority European.

The choice of Lourdes for this type of debate, a shrine of Catholic popular
piety and pilgrimage, might seem paradoxical. Bishop Jacques Perrier of
Tarbes and Lourdes, organizer of the event, told ZENIT that since 1984 there
has been a pavilion for the service "of Christian unity" in the shrine.

Bishop Perrier said he believes that this type of ecumenical initiative takes
nothing away from the "Catholic specificity" of Marian devotion.

"The Catholic specificity in Lourdes is manifested not only in Marian devotion
but also in the sacraments celebrated here, and the bishops and priests who
exercise their ministry," he explained.

The meeting served to underline the importance of the Dombes document, a
revolutionary declaration written by Catholic and Protestant theologians,
which gives Mary her "full place" and "no more than her place." The
document concludes that Mary is not a problem for the ecumenical dialogue
(see Groupe des Dombes, "Marie dans le dessein de Dieu et la communion
des saints," Bayard Éditions-Centurion, 1999).

"If the colloquium served to make this document known, we think we did not
waste time or spend our energy in vain," Bishop Perrier added.

On the second day, the debated focused on Mary and relations among
religions. The debate was opened by Rabbi Michel Serfaty, who spoke on
the "Image of a Jewish Mother at the Dawn of Our Era," offering a thoughtful
human profile of Myriam of Nazareth, as the Virgin´s original name was in
Hebrew.

Two testimonies followed on Mary as seen by other religions. Jean-Jacques
Rouchi gave the Muslim perspective and Chow-Ching-Lie the Buddhist.
Cardinal Arinze spoke of Mary as "a sign for the third millennium."

In his Vatican Radio interview, the cardinal noted that since other religions do
not recognize the Trinity, they cannot recognize Christ as the Son of God,
and Mary as the Mother of God.

"Yet, we must thank God for the positive connotations that Mary has for the
other religions," which make Mary a bridge with other believers, he said.

Canada to Test Immigrants for AIDS

OTTAWA (AP) - Canada will begin testing all immigrants and people seeking
refugee status for the AIDS (news - web sites) virus, Immigration Minister
Elinor Caplan said Tuesday.

A positive result would not mean automatic exclusion from Canada, Caplan
said. Each case would be assessed individually, she said, with one factor in
the decision being the burden it would place on the nation's strained health
care system.

Caplan said spouses, partners, dependent children and refugees would be
admitted to Canada even if they tested positive, and would be offered
counseling and treatment.

Under current policy, people seeking to live in Canada get tested for the HIV
virus (news - web sites) that causes AIDS at the discretion of a doctor. The
new policy would make such testing mandatory.

Would-be immigrants already can be excluded from Canada for leprosy,
mental handicaps and other conditions.

Caplan's spokesman, Derik Hodgson, said the goal was to get more
information for treatment and coping with the situation, not to provide a tool
for denying people access to Canada.

Health Minister Allan Rock said the new policy would bring Canadian policies
in line with those of other Western countries.

The Canadian Council for Refugees criticized the plan, saying it would
stigmatize those seeking a better life in Canada.

``Immigrants would be the first and only group on whom Canada would
impose such HIV (news - web sites) testing,'' said Janet Dench of the
refugee council. ``The Canadian population as a whole is not subject to
mandatory testing.''

*** U.S.-Mideast cease-fire plan accepted

JERUSALEM (AP) - CIA Director George Tenet won Israeli acceptance and
the reluctant endorsement of Palestinians for a cease-fire plan to
end nearly nine months of violence, U.S. officials said Wednesday.
After several days of arduous negotiations, Tenet had packed his
bags to return home. But the agreement came early Wednesday as Tenet
met one last time with Yasser Arafat, the officials said. Tenet's
high-profile role marked a shift in Bush administration policy and
it appeared to have paid off with Palestinian officials saying they
agreed to the plan in principle, but stressing they had reservations
about two of its elements. Israel accepted it earlier Tuesday.

*** Agencies ask for help in cybercrime

WASHINGTON (AP) - Law enforcement officials asked Congress Tuesday
for more money and expanded powers to fight cybercrime, as they
touted some recent successes. Michael Chertoff, head of the Justice
Department's criminal division, said his staff wants higher
penalties for computer criminals. He specifically cited the case of
David Smith, who pleaded guilty to writing the 1999 "Melissa" virus.
"In that case, even though the defendant caused tens of millions -
if not billions - of dollars of damage," Chertoff told the House
subcommittee on crime, "the maximum penalty was five years in
prison." Chertoff also said police should have broader powers to
investigate computer crimes, including an update to the wiretap laws
that were written for telephones and have been translated clumsily
to the Internet age.

*** Update: 41 nations using child soldiers

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) - While other 15-year-olds were in
school or playing sports, Robinson Odokonyero was fighting with a
rebel army in Uganda, attacking government soldiers and being forced
to kill fellow rebels unable to walk fast enough. Odokonyero, now a
22-year-old student, still has nightmares about his two years with
the Lord's Resistance Army. Killing, he says, "was not our
intention, but there was no way we could escape." A report released
Tuesday on the use of child soldiers said 300,000 children are under
arms in 41 countries worldwide. Some are as young as 7, though most
are 15 to 18. Besides being used as front-line fighters, children
are used as minesweepers, spies, guards, porters and sex slaves,
according to the report by the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child
Soldiers.

*** Update: Britain under pressure to join Euro

LONDON (AP) - Prime Minister Tony Blair's new government hasn't even
been formally sworn in, but it's already facing pressure over
whether, when and how Britain will move to join the common European
currency. One of Britain's biggest companies led the pro-euro charge
Tuesday after a post-election Cabinet shake-up that saw
euro-friendly Foreign Secretary Robin Cook demoted to a domestic
post. The chairman of Unilever - maker of Dove soap, Lipton tea and
Hellmanns mayonnaise - bluntly warned Blair to stay on course for an
expected referendum on whether to join the euro, saying businesses
would review their investments in Britain if the government put off
the vote.

*** French parliament OKs EU treaty

PARIS (AP) - The French parliament on Tuesday approved a treaty that
paves the way for bringing Poland, Hungary and other former
communist states into the European Union, despite Ireland's vote
against it last week. French lawmakers voted 407 to 27 in favor of
the Treaty of Nice, but 113 legislators in the National Assembly
abstained. The blueprint now goes to the upper house, the Senate,
later this month. All 15 EU members must approve the treaty. In
Ireland, the only EU country obliged by its constitution to ratify
the document in a referendum, voters rejected the treaty on June 7.
The treaty, worked out in difficult negotiations last December, aims
to simplify the EU's decision-making processes when up to 13 new
applicants are let in.

*** Dutch: Floating abortion clinic illegal

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) - Dutch doctors offering to terminate
pregnancies on a ship off the coast of Ireland have no license for
their floating abortion clinic, the Dutch government said Tuesday.
The Dutch-registered Aurora left the Netherlands Monday with two
doctors and a nurse from a pro-abortion activist group. They planned
to administer abortion pills in international waters outside the
12-mile territorial limit of Ireland, where the practice is illegal.
Health Minister Els Borst told Parliament that the Women on Waves
Foundation, which chartered the ship, had applied for a clinic
license but had not yet received it. Justice Minister Benk Korthals
then told the legislature that "abortions are illegal without a
license" and the doctors faced up to 4 1/2 years imprisonment.

*** Hezbollah: Israeli captives may die

BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) - Israeli soldiers held by Hezbollah are alive
but may die if Israel continues to drag its feet over negotiations
for a prisoner swap, the guerrilla group's leader warned Tuesday.
Sheik Hassan Nasrallah did not threaten outright to kill three
Israeli soldiers Hezbollah captured in an October ambush near the
border and an Israeli businessman it lured to Beirut later that
month. The businessman is a reserve army colonel. Israel's army said
that blood samples from where the soldiers were captured indicated
they had been wounded when seized. It wasn't clear if Nasrallah was
saying the soldiers could die of their injuries.

*** Taliban, UN clash over bakeries

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Afghanistan's ruling Taliban militia on
Tuesday decried the imminent closure of United Nations bakeries,
saying it will only hurt the "innocent." The U.N. World Food Program
says it will close 130 bakeries in the Afghan capital Kabul this
Friday unless the Taliban allow women to help conduct a key hunger
survey. Both sides said Tuesday that no agreement had been reached.
And World Food Program officials said they were pessimistic and
expected the bakeries to close on Friday. The bakeries' closure
would deprive about 282,000 impoverished Kabul residents of
subsidized bread.

*** Volcano leaves village in need

PORT VILA, Vanuatu (AP) - A volcano spewed ash and sulfur Wednesday
for a sixth day over the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, causing
more problems for thousands of people facing food and water
shortages. Ash was also falling on neighboring Ambryn Island, just
two miles from the erupting volcanic cone, National Disaster
Management Office project officer Barton Bisiwei said in a telephone
interview from Vanuatu's capital, Port Vila. The eruption on the
uninhabited island of Lopeivi has contaminated all water supplies
and food crops on nearby Palma Island, Bisiwei said. Two thousand
villagers were living on fish and yams roasted over open fires and
drinking bottled water being delivered by boats, Supplies of
drinking were very low after all the Palma water sources were
heavily contaminated by the ash fall, he added.

ANNE D'INNOCENZIO, AP Business Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - Gene Simmons, front man for rock legends Kiss, who
was at the New York Licensing Show, is bullish about plans to triple the
band's merchandising empire to $1.5 billion in revenues.

His latest gimmick? A ``Kiss Kasket,'' which can double as a coffin or wine
cooler. The metal coffin, which will retail from $4,500 to $5,000, will be sold
on Kiss's Web site and to funeral homes.

``It serves two purposes. You can have your last ride with your favorite
band. But while you're living, you can have a cold one,'' said Simmons,
dressed in black leather pants, and a black jacket.

Jerry's latest report from Eretz Israel.

Why the freeze on Jewish Settlements,

in Judea and Samaria?

The answer isn´t hard to find, but you are being told everything but
the truth. There is several battlefronts being waged in Israel. The
first is Anti-Semitism, by any means possible and to kill or stop the
natural growth of Jews. The second is Jihad, (Islamic Holy War) too
destroy the Nation of Israel, only to mention one aspect of Jihad.

When we keep hearing the Palestinians talk about freezing the
Settlements, what they are saying is, make it impossible for us Jews
to raise families and to populate this land. Today there are five
million Jews living in Israel, and five million non-Jews. The non-Jews
are mostly Arabs who live in Israel. There are 4.5 million of them.
The other half a million non-Jews are immigrants from the former
Soviet Union and foreign workers.

The projection for the population growth in Israel over the next 10 to
15 years is 8.5 million Arabs, and only 6.4 million Jews. Those
figures are based on 50,000 Jewish Immigrants a year and a natural
birth and death rate. These figures if true, indicate the death of the
Jewish State and the Zionist dream. With the abolishment of the
Settlements in Judea and Samaria these numbers get even worse.

With the Settlements dismantled and 250,000 Jews in exile in their own
homeland, that birth rate drops drastically. There is something else
to look at here, as the numbers indicate above, there are 4.5 million
Arabs living in Israel today. And only 250,000 Jews living in the
so-called West Bank. This shows that the Israelis have for the most
part accepted the fact that we must live together, but the
Palestinians haven´t. No one is calling for the 4.5 million to leave
Israel as part of a peace plan.

So you can see why the destruction of the Jewish Settlements in
Samaria and Judea are so important to Yasser Arafat, and it tells us
of his true intentions. His interest is not peace, but as usual, Jihad.

Last night while the peace talks were going on between Tenet and
Arafat, a Greek Orthodox Priest was killed on the road to Ma´aleh
Adumim, just north east of Jerusalem. He was driving a car with Israel
License Plates and that was his crime worthy of death by the
Palestinians.

Palestinians snipers wounded two women already today, and there have
been shootings throughout Israel. Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the
Hizbullah have all said they will not abide to any cease-fire or any
deal with the Israelis. The PA further stated that they would not
arrest any of the Terrorists who were released from Prisons.

There has also been no orders from Arafat to stop any of the
incitement. For example in the Palestinian schools in their main
textbook, called “Our Country Palestine” and on the title page it
reads “There is no alternative to destroying Israel”. When the
Palestinian children from the first grade on are taught to hate Jews,
how can there ever be peace? This is why Sharon keeps insisting on a
stop to the incitement.

Yasser Arafat has been pinned up for a week or more now in Ramallah,
and has been living in the fear of an Israeli retaliation for the
Friday night massacre that killed of 20 our youth. He has seen the IDF
get into position to deliver his military and weapon supplies a deadly
blow. As far as he is concerned Tenet offered him a way out so once
again he found it to his advantage to lie, and he has no problem in
doing that. He has been known to have broken 30 cease-fires, 22 alone
with King Hussein of Jordan, and many with Lebanon, I have lost count
of the ones he has broken with Israel. His word is worthless than
nothing and you can believe he is only trying to use this to booster
his image in the media, and of course they will help him in every
possible way.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, pray for my son Joel in the IDF and
pray for this ministry and your part in it. Shalom, jerry golden
