Accident launch wake-up call -- by James Hackett

Twice in the past month accidents involving Russian missiles and
missile warning systems have served to remind us that the possibility of a
nuclear accident still exists.
In the most recent incident a surface-to-air missile complex in the
Moscow region´s Ramenskoye district exploded on June 8, destroying three
S-300 missile launchers and 12 missiles. Eyewitnesses said they saw what
appeared to be a missile launch following the explosion and Moscow
television reported two missiles were launched. But a Russian Air Force
spokesman said there were no launches. Whether a missile was launched or
not, one or more might have been.
A short-circuit in a missile engine is believed to have caused the
explosion and resulting fire. Windows were broken in a nearby town, where
witnesses said they counted six loud explosions and saw a mushroom cloud
rising over the forest.
But it was not a nuclear explosion these missiles normally are not
nuclear-armed. The S-300 is Russia´s counterpart to America´s Patriot, a
solid-fuel missile designed to intercept aircraft, cruise missiles, and
short-range ballistic missiles. It is in widespread service in Russia, and
Moscow is eagerly trying to sell it abroad.
Less than a month earlier, on May 10, a major fire broke out at a
mission control center of Russia´s military space forces near Kurilovo,
some 60 miles southwest of Moscow, causing a loss of contact with four
military satellites. The fire, reportedly caused by a short-circuit in a
power cable, broke out at 2:30 in the morning and was so severe that the
three-story command center was still burning at noon.
The function of the military satellites that were out of service was
not reported. Whether missile early warning satellites or military
communications satellites, they could play an important role in Russia´s
ability to maintain control of its nuclear missiles. Remember 1995, when a
sounding rocket launched from Norway caused Russian nuclear missile
forces
to go on alert and President Boris Yeltsin´s nuclear briefcase was
activated, ready to launch a missile attack on the U.S.? Even a brief,
unexpected interruption in the functioning of Moscow´s early warning
satellites could be dangerous.
These two recent incidents are only the latest in a string of
accidents that reflect Russia´s declining infrastructure, diminishing
military effectiveness, and lack of funds. Last August, the explosion and
sinking of the Kursk nuclear submarine was followed by a major fire in the
Ostankino TV tower that knocked out Moscow television.
With infrastructure that has not been modernized for 20 to 30 years,
more disasters are waiting to happen. The Russian economy has been
buoyed
this year by the high price of oil on the world market, but the next
downturn in price could produce an acceleration of Russia´s infrastructure
decline.
Last year an article in the paper Komsomolskaya Pravda claimed that
the unnatural Soviet economy had forced technological expansion beyond the
country´s means. Now, with few resources to modernize the aging
infrastructure the chance of a nuclear disaster or crisis involving
Russia´s huge stockpile of nuclear weapons will increase. All of Russia´s
intercontinental and sea-launched ballistic missiles, except for the 26
new SS-27s produced over the past three years, will be obsolete by 2010
and should be retired.
Since Russia is not an enemy, there has been a tendency to forget its
nuclear-armed missiles. The main reason for a national missile defense is
to prevent missile-armed countries from using their weapons to blackmail
or intimidate, and to stop any missile that a rogue state may launch. But
another important reason is to stop an accidental or unauthorized launch
from any country.
The main concern in this regard has to be the 736 intercontinental
ballistic missiles and hundreds of submarine-launched missiles still
operational in Russia and carrying some 6,000 aging nuclear warheads. The
decline of Russia´s command and control network, with equipment that tends
to have "short-circuits," is sending us a warning.
The time is short to deploy at least an initial missile defense to
deal with an accidental launch, and to accelerate the disassembly of
nuclear weapons, both here and in Russia.
President Bush is on the right track in seeking a new strategic
framework that moves away from mutual suicide, toward deep reductions in
nuclear weapons, and deployment of a national missile defense. The plan to
put even a handful of interceptors in silos in Alaska by 2004 or 2005
should be pursued with vigor. Moscow´s deteriorating missile control
system may not wait.

Source: Iraq Airstrike Actually a Misfire

By ABCNEWS.com

An explanation has emerged for what Iraq says was a deadly U.S.-British
airstrike on a soccer field in northern Iraq. It seems gravity may have
played a role.

An explosion said to have killed 23 people on a soccer field in northern Iraq
was not due to a U.S.-British airstrike, but an errant Iraqi surface-to-air
missile, a military source told ABCNEWS today.

Earlier today, the Iraqi News Agency reported that coalition planes attacked
the
sports field in Tall Afar, about 275 miles northwest of Baghdad, but did not
say
when the attack occurred. However, it said the victims were buried today.

"America and its ally, Britain, have committed a new, ugly crime that will be
added to the record of their heinous crimes against Iraq," the agency said.
"The
people of Tall Afar buried today the martyrs amid shouts of anger and
condemnation against this crime."

But the U.S. military and British Defense Ministry denied firing on Iraq in the
past two days — and said due to the nature of the munitions, it was not
possible that U.S. or allied aircraft could have hit a soccer field.

The Iraqi news agency said in addition to the 23 killed, 11 people were
wounded in the attack.

Maj. Ed Loomis, public affairs officer for U.S. European Command in
Stuttgart, Germany, told The Associated Press: "We did fly yesterday,
conducting routine enforcement of the 'no-fly zone.'

"Our aircraft completed their mission without dropping any ordnance and
returned safely to their bases. The Iraqi allegations are absolutely false," he
said.

Tragic Mistake

Later, a military source told ABCNEWS, "we have a reasonable belief based
on
information we received" that the Iraqis fired surface-to-air-missiles, or SAMs,
at U.S. planes, and an errant missile fell on the field.

The source said the Iraqis fired SAMs at allied aircraft on Tuesday, but the
allied aircraft did not fire back.

British and American aircraft have been patrolling the skies over southern and
northern Iraq since shortly after the end of the 1991 Gulf War (news - web
sites). The so-called no-fly zones are intended to enforce an arms embargo
on
Iraq and to protect minority Shiite Muslims in the south and Kurds in the
north.

Iraq has consistently challenged the legitimacy of the no-fly zones,
targeting allied aircraft since December 1998.

ABCNEWS' Barbara Starr and Martha Raddatz contributed to this report.

Subject: [bprlist] U.S. gears to defend its satellites

U.S. gears to defend its satellites

By Jim Wolf

WASHINGTON, June 20 (Reuters) - The United States has set up two Air
Force
squadrons in anticipation of having to defend against attacks on commercial
satellites and other spacecraft, a top military officer told Congress on
Wednesday.

"To ensure our forces are fully prepared to defend against attacks on our
space-based infrastructure, we have recently activated two new squadrons,"
said
Army Lt. Gen. Edward Anderson, deputy commander in chief of the U.S.
Space
Command.

The mission of the Air Force Space Command's new 527th Space Aggressor
Squadron is to "replicate the known capabilities of potential adversaries," he
testified.

The unit -- with headquarters at Shriever Air Force Base in Colorado -- would
play the role of the enemy in war games like that held at Shriever Jan. 23-25,
the first of a series of Air Force exercises based on conflict in space,
Anderson said.

The other start-up, the Peterson Air Force, Colorado-based 76th Space
Control
Squadron of the Air Force Space Command, is to "explore future space
control
technologies by testing models and prototypes of counterspace systems
with the
goal of rapidly achieving space superiority," he said. It was activated on Jan.
22, according to an Air Force fact sheet.

Anderson's remarks, in testimony prepared for two panels of the House of
Representatives' Armed Services Committee, reflected the growing
importance
attached to the use of space for national security purposes by President
George
W. Bush's administration.

Citing growing U.S. reliance on satellites for everything from highway
traffic management to supporting military operations and monitoring treaties,
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld announced May 8 that he had tightened
reporting lines for military space policy issues.

ORBITING WEAPONS

At the time, Rumsfeld denied suggestions that the changes -- which put the
Air
Force in charge of military space programs and created a space policy
coordinating panel on the White House National Security Council -- were a
prelude to putting offensive weapons, such as lasers, in space for the first
time.

The reshuffle grew out of a call this year from a congressionally mandated
commission to elevate space on the U.S. national security agenda. Rumsfeld
himself headed the panel until he was tapped to become Bush's defense
secretary.

That so-called Commission to Assess U.S. National Security Space
Management and
Organization said conflict in space was inevitable. The president should retain
"the option to deploy weapons in space to deter threats to and, if necessary,
defend against attacks on U.S. interests," it concluded.

Currently, TRW Inc., Lockheed Martin Inc. and Boeing Co. are teamed under
an Air
Force contract to build an experimental space-based laser that could
become part
of a future layered ballistic missile defense. If deployed, a space leg would
supplement ground-based and sea-based systems.

"The mere fact that the United States is developing means to employ force in
space may serve as a significant deterrent," Anderson told the panels on
military procurement and military research and development.

The deputy commander of the Peterson Air Force, Colorado-based U.S.
Space
Command urged lawmakers to push up "the space superiority throttle."

"We have left this throttle at idle for too long," Anderson said in written
testimony. "Space is important enough to warrant a significant investment -- it
is not just a higher hill.

"This is the medium crucial to our American military operations and one we'll
have to fight for in the future," he added. In reply to a question from Research
and Development panel chairman Duncan Hunter, Republican from California,
Anderson rated at "about 3" on a 10-point scale the U.S. ability to protect its
140 orbiting military satellites from such threats as jamming.

He said both China and Russia were assumed to have or be working on
ways to
knock out U.S. satellites in wartime, adding that both had been actively
involved in selling military technology overseas in the past.

Powell coming next week to help shore up cease-fire

No headway at tense joint security meeting

By Natan Guttman, Amos Harel, Amnon Barzilai and Daniel
                  Sobelman
                  Ha'aretz Correspondents

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell will visit the Middle East next week to
try to stabilize the Israeli-Palestinian cease-fire, President George Bush
decided yesterday.

Powell will arrive toward the end of the week when Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon returns from Washington, where he is due to meet Bush at the White
House on Tuesday. Special envoy William Burns will arrive tomorrow to
prepare the ground for Powell's visit.

The decision to send Powell is a major policy reversal - two weeks ago
Powell said he did not intend to come here unless there was a real chance
for progress. The Bush administration, including Powell, has in the past
frequently criticized Bill Clinton for becoming over-involved in Middle East,
saying it damaged American prestige.

However, the decision to send Powell caps a week of growing American
involvement in the crisis, marked by numerous conversations between
administration officials and Middle Eastern leaders.

Bush spoke by telephone last night with Sharon, Palestinian Authority
Chairman Yasser Arafat, and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. His
spokesman said the president intended to tell Arafat it was important for all
sides to abide by the cease-fire. Arafat's office termed the conversation
"positive," saying Bush had promised that the U.S. would do everything it
could to implement the Mitchell Report and return the situation in the
territories to the status quo before the violence erupted last September.

The main purpose of Powell's visit will be to shore up the cease-fire, but he
will also try to clarify both sides' positions on the confidence-building
measures recommended by Mitchell. Israel has repeatedly said it will not
embark on such measures until the violence has ceased.

Meanwhile, the diplomatic-security cabinet decided yesterday that Israel will
continue efforts to implement the cease-fire but "reserves the right to self-
defense" - the right to take military action to frustrate terror attacks. Over the
objections of Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, the cabinet adopted Defense
Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer's proposal that such actions - even including
assassinations of terrorists - will require approval only by the defense
minister rather than by the full security cabinet.

In practice, however, Israel has not approved any assassinations since the
cease-fire was declared, and security sources said no military response to
yesterday's fatal attack near Homesh has been approved.

At the meeting, a majority of the ministers said they were skeptical that the
cease-fire would last, but only Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze'evi spoke in
favor of ending it immediately. Most ministers also expressed dissatisfaction
with the policy of restraint since fatal terror attacks have continued. Peres
was the main spokesman in favor of continued restraint, arguing that the
number of attacks has fallen by two-thirds since the truce began. He also
argued that this policy should be renamed "self-defense" rather than
restraint.

The cabinet also discussed a plan for the IDF's redeployment in the
territories, but agreed this could not be implemented until the violence
stopped. The joint Israel-Palestinian-American security committee also met
again yesterday but ended again with no results. As with Monday's meeting,
the atmosphere was tense, due to the Homesh attack.

Israel was also upset by a proclamation issued by Arafat's Fatah faction,
which said the movement would continue to carry out attacks in all parts of
the territories not under full Palestinian control. The proclamation said Fatah
would not give Israeli soldiers or settlers "a single day of peace," as the
organization did not consider itself bound by "any understandings or
agreements that do not guarantee an end to the occupation."

This directly contradicts statements made by Jibril Rajoub, head of the PA's
Preventive Security Service in the West Bank, at a press conference earlier
this week. Rajoub said the cease-fire covers all of the West Bank and Gaza,
not just areas under full Palestinian control.

But despite the tension, Israeli security sources cited one positive note at
the meeting. Unlike at Monday's meeting, they said, the Palestinians did not
respond to Israel's complaints about the continued violence with a litany of
what they see as Israel's violations of the cease-fire. Instead, they spoke at
length about the PA's commitment to preventing attacks.

Earlier, however, Arafat publicly complained that Israel is not implementing
the cease-fire. Israel, he said, "is trying to mislead international public
opinion," while the IDF is continuing to operate against the PA using
"weapons that are internationally banned."

"Israel is taking these actions to delay resumption of diplomatic talks," he
said.

Senior PA negotiator Saeb Erekat said international observers must be sent
"to every corner of the territories," saying that without this, it would be
impossible to determine who was and was not maintaining the cease-fire.

An argument also broke out at the security meeting over the timetable for the
IDF's withdrawal to the positions it occupied before the violence began. Israel
says the redeployment should be spread out over a month, but the PA wants
it be finished in two weeks. For the present the argument remains moot,
since Israel will not start the redeployment until the violence has ceased.

Letter by MK Bishara addressed to Israeli Knesset
Press Release MK Azmi Bishara - National Democratic Assembly June
20, 2001

[IMRA: MK Bishara declines to deal with the fact that Yasser Arafat, as
leader of the Palestinian People, forfeited the right to resist the
"occupation" via any means beyond the negotiating table in his first letter to
Yitzchak Rabin on September 9, 1993 (and as repeated in the agreements):
"The
PLO commits itself to the Middle East peace process, and to a peaceful
resolution of the conflict between the two sides and declares that all
outstanding issues relating to permanent status will be resolved through
negotiations." This commitment was a NECESSARY condition for the entire
Oslo
process. To assert that Arafat's commitment was not binding is to say that
there is no validity to any agreement - present or future - with the
Palestinians.]

Following MK Azmi Bishara's speech in Kardaha, Syria last week, and the
misinformed and misguided public
outrage which it triggered in the Jewish sector, the Knesset held a
discussion today on MK Bishara's "behavior."
In light of the on-going public hysteria being fostered by politicians and
journalists alike, both in the Knesset* and
on the street, MK Bishara declined to appear in the plenum, opting instead
to address a letter to Speaker Burg
and his fellow Members of Knesset. Below, are excerpts of the said letter,
and attached is the original Hebrew
text.

*Coalition Chairman MK Ze'ev Boim (Likud) proposed today that his fellow
MKs
officially boycott Bishara by leaving the plenum any time MK Bishara gets up
to
speak and MK Benny Elon (National Union) proposed that MK Bishara be
forbidden
to speak during the debate.

Honorable Speaker, Respected Knesset,

The tempest that swept Israel following my speech in Syria took me by
surprise. Of course, I wasn't surprised by the
campaign of incitement and assault by right wing extremists, as this is but
the
continuation of an on-going process to delegitimize the Arab public and its
leadership-a process that reached one of its numerous climaxes in the
events of
October 2000. What amazed me, and disappointed me greatly, was the
enlistment of
segments of the "Left" to the choir of incitement and distortion.

This campaign of incitement didn't miss a single element of classic Fascist
demagoguery: disinformation, distortion, lies, demonization, the fostering of
anxiety and fright, the projection of rage and hate at the "other," monolithic
discourse, and a fixation on the image of the opponent-other rather than the
content of his words.

What is amazing is the fact that the uproar surrounding my speech in Syria
took place without any regard for its content, or,
worse, by way of its explicit distortion. In the speech I expressed opinions
that I have expressed repeatedly in various fora: from the Knesset podium,
through the media, and various Arab forums, including - as in this instance -
of
a ceremonial nature. My words were certainly not extreme - for had they
been,
there would have been no need to misconstrue them and present them in
such a
distorted fashion.

I opened my speech by addressing the agony, the struggle, and the hopes of
the Palestinians in general, and those under direct
military occupation in particular, who are forced to contend with the
American-Israeli war machine. I continued with criticism
of those Arab regimes that love the process of resistance more than the
realization of its declared objective-that is the creation
of a free and happy society. Further on, I quoted a poem by Ahmad Shawqi,
which addresses Damascus' struggle with French colonialism in 1925. After
that, I spoke of Assad and Syria's rational oreign policy; I criticized the
supposed dichotomy that some of the Arab regimes posit between the
absence of a
just political solution and economic growth, and a just political solution and
the absence of economic growth; I emphasized the need to create a modern
and
enlightened society based on a people's sovereignty that will constitute a
social contract among free individuals; I noted how many people are
anxiously
following the current Syrian regime's economic reforms, as well as its
attempts
to coordinate the different Arab positions. In the last paragraph of my speech,
I presented the need for an alternative to either submitting to the dictates of
the Israeli government, or accepting the option of war that it presents.

My attackers addressed the last paragraph of the speech in which I said:

"[A]n Israeli government came into power determined to shrink the realm of
resistance, by putting forth an ultimatum: either
accept Israel's dictates, or face full-scale war. Thus, it is not possible
to continue with a third way - that of resistance - without
expanding this realm once again so that the people can struggle and resist.
Nor
is it possible to expand this realm without a unified and internationally
effective Arab political position. This is precisely the time for such a
stance."

A patchwork of words was fabricated out of these last two sentences, by
distorting both the words and their meaning. My call
to resist the occupation, in a way that will prevent a tailspin into all-out
war, received the headline "MK Azmi Bishara's War Speech."

It is difficult to comprehend how this sentence calls for war, when it
attempts to determine the factors necessary to prevent
war. I sincerely hope that the government of Israel will not drag the region
into war, which will only cause countless and needless casualties. I am
horrified by calls for a "military determination" and for war, especially when
voiced by government ministers, and am even more horrified by the public
acceptance of political opinions based on the need to go to war and arrive at
a
"military determination."

Action on the political level is essential for arriving at a peace accord
that is based on a genuine historic compromise, the right
to self-determination, and the values of justice and equality. Any agreement
based on Israeli dictates and submission to them, not only is unacceptable
as
such, but also doesn't stand a chance. I expressed this position before Camp
David, both inside and outside the Knesset, and it has been proven as
correct.

In such a situation, a unified Arab political position is of great
importance. Were there such a position, the Palestinian people
would have been spared much blood and suffering in their struggle. Such a
position would have played a central role in bringing about international
pressure on Israel to end its occupation. History teaches us that
occupations end through resistance, international pressure, or both.

Some of the attacks against me, especially those from the Right, revolved
around my opposition to the occupation, and my
support for resistance and the Intifada. And so, I oppose the occupation,
and oppose the Israeli demand that the Palestinians
accept dictates that preclude the possibility of arriving at a genuine
historic compromise. I think that every person must oppose
the occupation. I regret that it is necessary to remind - especially the
Left in Israel - that resistance to the occupation is
legitimate, both morally and according to international law. I oppose
occupation whether it is in the West Bank, Southern
Lebanon, or the Golan. And yes, I congratulate those resistance movements
that succeed to overcome colonial occupation, be
it in Southern Lebanon (where the Hizballah was a part of the Lebanese
resistance) or anywhere else in the world. I also hope
that the second Palestinian Intifada - another resistance movement - will
bring about the end of Israeli occupation in the West
Bank and the Gaza Strip. I was under the impression that this is what a
large part of the Israeli public thought as well.

Anyone who wants to see the occupation end should also support
international
intervention and a unified Arab stance. Every Palestinian - even if an Israeli
citizen - shares this position. The call for Arab support for the Intifada was
voiced by me, as well as by countless Palestinians, including the leadership
of
the Arab public in Israel, consistently since 1987. In my humble opinion, the
role of Israeli peace seekers is to struggle for the exact same principles -
Neither Dictates Nor War-and to recognize the Palestinian right to struggle
against the occupation and against the brutal repression inflicted upon the
Palestinian population in recent months...

...For years the Israeli establishment marginalized the Arab Members of
Knesset and the Arab public in Israel, from the
central political discussion. As a Palestinian, a citizen, and an elected
public servant who represents a broad public, I see
activism and the expression of opinions on central political questions as
the essence of my duty. This in no way detracts from
my efforts to achieve civil equality through the extensive legislation I
have initiated - an equality that can not, by the way, be
achieved without real historic compromise.

[My] activism in the Arab arena has another, no less important, context.
Just as I call for Arab solidarity on the Palestinian
question, as a Leftist - who seeks liberation and equality - I am obliged to
support and express my solidarity with the democratic forces in the Arab
world.

I am a citizen of the State of Israel. I also recognize the legitimacy of
the State of Israel by virtue of the right of the
Jewish-Israeli collective which it has consolidated to self-determination
(see my interview with Ari Shavit in Ha'aretz (1997)
that was translated into Arabic and disseminated widely), in the framework
of a historic compromise that includes the
realization of this right, but also the realization of the rights of the
Palestinian people and the rights of the Palestinian refugees.
However, I am not an Israeli patriot. I am Palestinian, a member of a nation
whose tragedy did not end in 1948. Don't ask me, for example, to rejoice in
Israel's victories on the battlefield, or to celebrate Independence Day. By the
way, on this count too, you will be hard pressed to find Arab citizens who
hold
a position that differs from mine.

I am an Arab and a Palestinian. Israel's victory is my tragedy. But
nonetheless I call for a historic compromise in a democratic
and egalitarian framework. Such a historic compromise is the only way we
will all be able to continue living here, without
senseless wars.

Anti-globalisation groups prepare for online battle
http://www.smh.com.au/news/0106/22/world/world1.html
By Mark Riley, Herald Correspondent in New York

The globalisation battleground is poised to move into cyberspace as the World
Bank prepares to hold a major conference online to avoid another round of
violent demonstrations.

Protest groups have warned they are planning to sabotage the virtual
conference with a campaign of cyber-terrorism that will be just as disruptive
as their marches.

The World Bank had planned to hold its annual development economics conference
on Globalisation, Poverty and Wealth in Barcelona next week.

However it decided to replace it with a virtual conference amid concerns that
it would degenerate into violence as witnessed at almost every international
summit since the riots at the Seattle trade talks in 1999.

The anti-globalisation groups have warned the bank it will be invading its
turf and that they possess all the cyber weapons necessary to hack into the
conference and shut it down.

The president of the World Bank, the Australian Mr James Wolfensohn, is due to
open the two-day online event on Monday.

It will include Internet video hook-ups with speakers such as Professor
Jeffery Williamson, of Harvard University, and Professor Jomo Kwame Sundaram,
from the University of Malaysia.

Greenpeace says it has more than 100,000 people ready to use their computers
to jam the virtual conference by bombarding it with emails.

A similar campaign orchestrated by the Friends of the Earth shut down the
White House's official Web site several times in retaliation for President
George Bush's decision to walk away from the Kyoto protocol on climate change.

The World Bank has decided to press on with the Internet conference despite
the threats, believing there was even greater risk of disruption if it had
stuck with the original plan to hold the summit in Spain.

Thousands of European protesters were planning to descend on Barcelona,
including many of the groups that took part in the violence last week outside
the European Union conference in Gothenburg.

A spokesman for the World Bank said any acts of cyber terrorism next week
would reflect badly on the anti-globalisation groups, particularly "their
attitude towards free speech and freedom of discussion".

"We've taken reasonable precautions but if there is a major effort to close us
down, I can't promise that the computers will hold up," the spokesman said.

Scientists make liquid water into a ball

French scientists have made liquid marbles which roll over a solid surface
without making it wet.

They have found a water-repellent powder which can coat a tiny droplet
turning it into an almost frictionless ball.

The 'dry droplets' behave as if they are made from soft rubber and can even
float on water.

They were designed by Pascale Aussillous and David Quere at the College
de
France in Paris.

When their powder is mixed with water it tries to escape by rising to the
surface and so coats the tiny droplets completely.

The coating gives the liquid a barrier which prevents it from sticking to
other solid surfaces.

The liquid marble technology may one day be used by microchip-sized
laboratories designed to carry out medical or environmental monitoring
reports Nature.

CFI CRISIS UPDATE 21st June 2001

An Israeli was shot and killed by Palestinian gunmen yesterday as he
drove in Samaria, the third Jewish resident of the disputed
territories murdered on the roads this week. The attack occurred near
the Palestinian-ruled city of Nablus. The victim was identified as
Iliya Krivitz, 59, from the community of Homesh. He was approaching
the house of a business associate in a Palestinian village near the
community when he was shot dead at close range. Krivitz was the second
resident of Homesh killed this week, and the attack sent shock waves
through the tiny community of 39 families. "That's it, tomorrow I'm
going," said Homesh resident Mira Oknin, 31. "My bags are already
packed." Two families have already left Homesh and moved back to
Israel proper. The Peace Now group, which favors dismantling the
settlements, is considering coming to the aid of Homesh residents who
want to leave. A group affiliated with Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction
vowed that more attacks are coming. "These operations are within our
plan to enlarge the cycle of armed resistance against settlements
built on our lands," the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades said in a statement
in which it claimed responsibility for the killing of two Israelis on
Monday.

In another ominous development today, Palestinians for the first time
fired a 120mm mortar shell at Israel. The army said the use of the
longer-range weapon marked an "escalation in Palestinian violence."
The shell, which has a range of several miles, fell near Kibbutz Nahal
Oz inside Israel and shattered car windows. Until now, mortar shells
fired by Palestinians have had a range of about a mile. Overnight and
today, Palestinian gunmen have also been firing at Israeli positions
near Rafah in the Gaza Strip. Adding to the tension, a Palestinian
worker was killed by Israeli soldiers at a roadblock yesterday near
the town of Ramallah, north of Jerusalem. The army said soldiers
feared the man was a suicide bomber because he approached the
roadblock in a "suspicious" manner. Palestinians said the victim, a
father of five, was returning from his job and was shot when he tried
to bypass the checkpoint on foot to avoid long lines.

The escalating violence is casting further doubt on the battered
US-brokered cease-fire and has aroused deep concern in Washington.
President George W. Bush made urgent telephone calls to Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to urge them to
honor the cease-fire, and announced that Secretary of State Colin
Powell would be sent to the region next week. "The parties must
continue to work on an all-out effort to bring peace," Bush told
reporters after the telephone calls, which included a conversation
with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. "I said we're making some
progress and that they all must continue to work toward breaking the
cycle of violence." Bush's decision to call Arafat marked a slight
departure for the White House, which has held Arafat at arms length
because of his failure to curb the violence. "The President urged
Chairman Arafat to seize the moment and work with 100 percent effort
to reduce violence and fight terrorism," National Security Council
spokesman Sean McCormack said. Bush is scheduled to meet Sharon at the
White House on Tuesday, their second meeting since the President took
office on January 20. Bush has not met with Arafat. Powell said his
trip to the region is "an opportunity...to help push the [cease-fire]
process along."

Israel's Shin Bet secret police has arrested two Palestinians who
allegedly killed a Greek Orthodox monk last week in a roadside ambush
aimed at Israelis. The attack occurred near the Jewish community of
Ma'ale Adumim outside Jerusalem, when gunmen fired at the monk's car
which had Israeli license plates. The Prime Minister's Office said the
two gunmen were members of Yasser Arafat's elite Force-17. A statement
said Marwan Barghouthi, the leader of Arafat's "Tanzim" militia in
Judea and Samaria, was suspected of arming and financing the men. "The
two are being questioned. It is believed they were caught shortly
before they could carry out other attacks," the statement said. Though
Barghouthi is well known to both Israelis and Palestinians as a senior
militia commander, he denied any connection to the gunmen, saying his
"role is restricted to the political sphere." "This is grave
incitement to pave the way for my assassination," Barghouthi said.

On The Brink of War “Again”!

Over the past few months the Iraqis have twice brought their troops to
the Syrian border, to assist in the liberation of “Palestine” or
better said the destruction of Israel. They are in the process of
training their special Jerusalem Army of 7 million so-called
volunteers. It is now very common to see about as many pictures of
Saddam Hussein as you do Yasser Arafat in Gaza, Judea and Samaria. In
fact, the Palestinians are waiting for Saddam to save them or at least
come to their rescue.

It has been reported over the past two days that Saddam may launch an
attack against Israel at any time. It is also being reported that
George W. Bush has called Sharon several times over the past two days
to try and hold him back. Knowing that if Israel goes after the
Palestinian infrastructure at this time it may be the motivation
Saddam needs to launch the attack.

Saddam is making sounds of war over a pipeline the Saudi´s have
destroyed or rerouted. He and his two sons are all making the loudest
sound of war since the gulf war. At the same time Syria has pulled
their troops out of Beirut and rearranged them in what looks like a
posture for attack. In today´s Jerusalem Post we read that the IDF is
on the highest alert on the northern border and it states plainly that
preparations have been made to deal with the troops of Saddam Hussein.

Now the Hizbullah in southern Lebanon have the ball in their court,
they know that they can kick everything off by a mortar and missile
attack on the IDF and the Northern Israeli towns. It is also known
that they have built up a very large arsenal just north of our border,
”thanks to Ehud Barak”. Knowing that the IDF will go after them very
quickly and that would be all it takes to cause Saddam to react.

Israel has known as does many others that Saddam now has a nuclear
bomb/s and the means to deliver. Dr. Khidhir Hamza who defected from
Iraq in 1994, told the American Enterprise Institute, that there is
little doubt that Saddam has the bomb and the way to deliver it. It is
known that Iraq has at least 1.3 tons of low-enriched uranium and 12
tons of natural uranium, that more than likely he has or most likely
has made at least 6 nuclear bombs. And has the means to deliver them
to Israel or to any of his neighbors, thanks to China and Russia.

It could well be that Sharon, has a gun in his back, he knows that if
he goes after the Palestinians the war begins. In fact, he has said as
much, but didn´t and can´t explain such a thing on TV to the Israeli
people. Many in the Knesset are demanding that he destroy Yasser
Arafat´s Terrorist organization and that he does it now. That he not
go to Washington to meet with Bush but to go after the enemies who are
killing us every day.

In the mean time Washington is doing everything it can to stop Sharon
from doing what he must and will sooner or later have to do. William
Burns is here in Israel now, and Powell is coming in a few days. And
Sharon is to travel to Washington on Sunday and meet with Bush on
Tuesday. So it seems that America is making sure that Sharon has no
time to prepare for war. In the mean time Yasser Arafat´s men are
killing Jews daily. What is even more troubling is Powell and Burns
will meet with this murderer as if he is a legitimate Statesman, only
causing a prolonged finality to this horror.

It´s understandable that Washington does not want this war to happen.
Simply because if it turns nuclear and it will, the whole world gets
involved. Once again we are seeing what may the beginning of a
terrible event, prophesied in the Word of God. It may not happen the
way a lot of so-called Prophets say it will, but then they are not
really in control anyway. God is. And I would suggest that we all
spend a little time talking to Him before it´s to late.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, pray for our son Joel in the IDF and
the other IDF soldiers, and please pray for this ministry and your
part in it. Now would be a great time for a financial gift to help us
get ready while still there is time. Shalom, jerry golden

Hamas Weekly: Syria and Heads of Lebanese Christian Forces
Should be Tried for Sabra and Shatila before Sharon

Saleh Al-Na'ami, a senior political commentator for the
Hamas weekly, Al-Risala, related in its latest issue to the
BBC/Panorama program about Sharon. Contrary to the
consensus in the Arab media, Al-Na'ami states that the
demand to prosecute Israeli PM Sharon as a war criminal is
hypocritical and that Syria and the heads of the Christian
Lebanese forces are the ones responsible for the massacre
at Sabra and Shatila. Following are excerpts from his
column:

"The documentary aired by the BBC's first channel has
provoked the interest of the entire world... Naturally,
many Arab intellectuals were enthusiastic about prosecuting
Sharon, and the BBC deserves full credit for its objective
handling of the issue..."

"However, with all honesty, there is a certain degree of
hypocrisy in the Arab coverage of the Sabra and Shatila
massacres!!!!! It is true that Sharon bears responsibility
for these massacres, but the people who committed these war
crimes with their own hands, were never tried."

"Moreover, Eli Hbeika who was head of security in the
Lebanese Forces when they committed these massacres and who
supervised the mass-killings and the rapes, boasted in the
[BBC] film itself that he was never, nor will he ever be
tried, and that he lives completely free. The same goes for
Fadi Afram, the commander of the Lebanese Forces, who had
an actual role in committing the massacres."

"We ask once again the question we have been asking always:
Who is protecting Eli Hbeika now, when nobody disputes his
responsibility for these massacres? The answer is: The
Syrian government who rewarded him two years after the
massacre, by appointing him as a minister in the Lebanese
government. The Syrian rulers, and first and foremost
Bashar Al-Assad, should prove their commitment to the
Palestinian cause before they fill the air with their
slogans about it."

"Indeed, it is hypocritical to attack Sharon for his part
in the Sabra and Shatila massacre, without demanding from
Syria and from the Lebanese government to demonstrate
minimal commitment towards the Palestinian people and allow
the prosecution of the real war criminals - Hbeika and the
gang of lowlifes that surrounded him at the time."

"Israel has established an investigation committee headed
by a judge in order to investigate the Sabra and Shatila
massacres. This committee forced the Begin government to
fire Sharon from the Ministry of Defense. Israel has also
discharged many of its army commanders. However, we have
not seen the Lebanese government doing [what Israel did]
even though one would expect them to do it."

"When such a committee was, finally, established by the
Lebanese government, it acquitted Hbeika of any
responsibility for committing the massacres and unloaded
all the responsibility on Israel, even though, the court
established that it was Hbeika's soldiers who committed the
massacres."

"As'ad Jamuswho headed the Lebanese investigation
committee, gave the strangest possible reasoning for his
committee's decision: He leveled the responsibility on
Israel because the Lebanese Forces were Israel's allies
when they committed the massacre!!"

"Syria, hence, has not only turned a blind eye to Hbeika's
responsibility for the massacre [when it appointed him a
minister], it has also turned a blind eye to the fact that
it was publicly declared [by the investigation committee]
that Hbeika served as an Israeli agent. Furthermore, in
1981, Israeli TV aired a report showing Hbeika, accompanied
by a group of Jews, visiting the Golan Heights and calling
upon Israel to keep the Golan Heights."

"In all honesty, the regime in Syria has not found any flaw
in its relations with Hbeika, despite his crimes against
Palestinians and Lebanese alike, because this regime has
lost the sensitivity to the lives of its own people."

"Someone who murdered tens of thousands in Hamma, cannot be
expected to find any flaw in the murder of two thousands
Palestinians by Hbeika."(1)

Outbreak of bubonic plague strikes prairie dogs in Colorado Springs

                         Weekend News Today

                         Source: ABC

Thu Jun 21,2001 -- There is an outbreak of bubonic plague in Colorado
Springs. The plague was found among prairie dogs near the airport and
health officials are investigating if a young man died from the disease, which
killed a third of Europe during the middle ages.

Dr. Tisha Dowe, head of the El Paso County Department of Health and
Environment, on Tuesday ordered warning signs posted to keep people out of
the area. A man who lived near the prairie dog colony died Monday after
suffering symptoms similar to those caused by the plague. Tests to
determine the cause of death will take several days, officials said. The
plague is deadly in humans if left untreated. It spreads through bites from
infected fleas.

46 US diplomats told to leave Russia by July 1

Thu Jun 21,2001 -- Some 46 US diplomats who had been told to leave
Russia in the heat of a spy scandal in March will quit the country by July 1,
a US official in Moscow told AFP on Thursday. "This is all part of the old
scandal" sparked by the arrest earlier this year of FBI agent Robert
Hanssen, who is charged with spying for the Soviet Union and Russia for at
least 15 years, the US official said. Hanssen was arrested in Virginia on
February 18.

Washington retaliated by expelling four Russian diplomats and pronouncing
46 others persona non grata. In a tit-for-tat response, Moscow also expelled
four US diplomats, and vowed to take further equivalent action.

Thousands protest pope's visit to Ukraine

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: AFP

Thu Jun 21,2001 -- Ten thousand Orthodox Christians marched through the
streets of Kiev Thursday in protest against Pope John Paul II's controversial
visit this week, while the country's scandal-wracked leader appealed for
calm. "I am convinced that this visit will contribute to (the establishment of)
peace between the faiths in Ukraine,"said President Leonid Kuchma, who
overruled the objection of the Ukrainian church in inviting the pope, who is
due to arrive Saturday.

But Kuchma's ecumenical message was apparently lost on the thousands of
demonstrators who followed a procession of Orthodox priests clad in black
through the centre of Kiev. "Orthodoxy or death" and "the Pope harbinger of
the anti-Christ," were among the slogans emblazoned on banners carried by
the demonstrators who marched to Ukraine's parliament building and then
began chanting slogans outside the foreign ministry.

After historic visits to Greece and Syria earlier this year, the 81-year-old
Pope John Paul II is again set to court controversy Saturday when he
embarks on a five-day visit to Ukraine amid high tension between Roman
Catholics and Orthodox Christians. Since the collapse 10 years ago of the
Soviet Union, which outlawed religion, the majority Orthodox faithful have
accused the Catholics of seeking to convert Ukrainians, take control of
parishes and seize church assets.

Palestinians said to be obtaining arms from Europe

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: Middle East Newsline

Thu Jun 21,2001 -- Palestinian fighters are said to be obtaining rockets and
missiles from Europe to maintain the war against Israel. European diplomatic
sources said investigations are taking place in several countries regarding
allegations that both the ruling Fatah party and the opposition Hamas have
formed links with European groups to obtain weapons or supplies in
exchange for Iraqi oil.

The sources said Israel is alleging that the Palestinians obtained weaponry
smuggled from Europe by a former Croatian deputy defense minister, Libo
Rojs. They said Israel and the government in Zagreb are investigating the
allegation that the retired general helped smuggle weapons from Croatia,
Hungary and Russia to the Palestinian Authority.

United Jewish Communities launches massive Israel solidarity campaign

                         Weekend News Today

                         Source: Jerusalem Post

Thu Jun 21,2001 -- The umbrella of North American federations is set to
unveil a multi-pronged, $4 million solidarity campaign titled "Israel NOW -
and Forever." The United Jewish Communities project - which should receive
final approval by late July - combines various advocacy, education and fund-
raising activities and will last until winter, said Gail Hyman, UJC's vice
president for marketing and public affairs. The first step will be this
weekend's "Solidarity Shabbat" of UJC leadership in Jerusalem, where they
will meet with Israeli leaders and hammer out final details of the campaign.

* Among the other campaign highlights:

* Heavy promotion of solidarity missions to Israel.

* Advocacy- and media-training for campus and community activists, in
conjunction with local Hillels and Jewish community relations councils, "to
train their leadership to become strong advocates on behalf of Israel," Hyman
said.

* A fund-raising initiative to assist all Israeli families directly affected during
the violence by death, injury, property destruction, psychological damage -
"We understand there are lots of children having great difficulty," Hyman said
- and perhaps even economic support for small business owners.

* A "media tour" that will take Israeli spokesmen and US Middle East
experts - scholars, journalists and other opinion-shapers - into key
communities across North America to meet with local media.

* A major mission to Israel, called "Journey to Solidarity I," to be held
September 9-14th.

* Production of 1 million leaflets, to be distributed September 17th in all
synagogues during Rosh Hashanah, to remind Jews of the need for
solidarity. "As we sound the shofar this year, it will also be a call to action
for every Jew in North America," Hyman said.

* A Solidarity Shabbat on September 22-23rd that will reach out to
synagogues, churches and university campuses to show that "support for
Israel extends beyond the Jewish community," Hyman said.

* A major outdoor rally in New York September 23rd, with a concurrent rally
possibly in Los Angeles. New York was chosen not only because of its huge
Jewish community but because it is America's "media capital," Hyman said.
The UJC also "wants our voices heard by members of the United Nations,"
who will be convening their General Assembly just days later.

Plot to Assassinate Bush
Osama bin Laden has threatened to assassinate U.S. President George W.
Bush at a G-8 meeting in Italy, the head of Russia's Federal Bodyguard
Service has said, according to reports.

The Associated Press said Yevgeny Murov was quoted by Itar-Tass news
agency as saying: "Bin Laden is threatening the American president, but we
know what international terrorism is today and therefore all the bodyguard
units concerned are preparing for this. "We view the threats as totally
serious, but hope that with joint efforts we can solve all the problems."

The Group of Eight summit is meeting between July 20 - 22 in Genoa, Italy.
Leaders from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and
the United States are expected to attend the summit.

Murov -- Russian President Vladimir Putin's chief bodyguard -- did not
elaborate on the threats. He said agents from Russia's Federal Bodyguard
Service have travelled to Genoa to coordinate with their counterparts from the
other nations taking part in the summit to investigate the threats.

Reports in the U.S., German and Italian media have said bin Laden may be
plotting against Bush and other world leaders coming to Genoa, the
Associated Press reported. CNN

Bin Laden´s Militants to Take Part in Intifada
Osama bin Laden, the Saudi national topping the FBI´s most wanted list,
published a videotape Wednesday claiming that his soldiers would assist the
Palestinians in carrying out attacks against Israel.

The video, broadcast on Channel Two´s news program, showed Muslim
militants undergoing training in the Afghan desert where it is assumed Bin
Laden is hiding out. The militants were shown blowing up targets in the sand,
jumping hurdles, handling explosives and target shooting at a large screen
with images of former U.S. President Bill Clinton and the late King Hussein
of Jordan.

In an address to Palestinians at the end of the tape, Bin Laden calls for
“blood, blood and destruction, destruction. We give you the good news that
the forces of Islam are coming and the forces of Yemen will continue in the
name of God,” he says. Bin Laden called out to his supporters and urged
them to travel to Israel where, “your Palestinian brothers are waiting for you
with open arms.”

In the tape, bin Laden's followers are shown traveling through the rugged
desert terrain holding black flags and copies of Islam's holy book, the Koran.
The tape ends as it starts, with a verse from the Koran - and with a request
for whoever watches it to distribute it.

Bin Laden is wanted for the bombing of the U.S.S. Cole, in Yemen, in which
17 American naval soldiers were killed and for the bombing of the U.S.
Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya. Ha'aretz

Top Palestinian Urges German Role In Peace Effort
A senior Palestinian official Wednesday asked German Foreign Minister
Joschka Fischer to lead a European engagement in Middle East peace
efforts as a shaky cease-fire between Israelis and Palestinians continues.

Palestinian Minister for International Cooperation Nabil Sha'ath urged
Fischer, who was thrust into a mediator role during a Middle East tour this
month after a Palestinian suicide bomb killed 20 Israelis in Tel Aviv, to come
back to the region. "I have asked [Fischer] to come back to help with the
peace process," Sha'ath told reporters after meeting Fischer at the German
Foreign Ministry.

Sha'ath, who will travel on to Washington to confer with U.S. Secretary of
State Colin Powell, said a presence of Europeans under Fischer would help
stabilise the week-old truce brokered by U.S. CIA director George Tenet.
Fischer found himself engaging in intense shuttle diplomacy in Israel and the
West Bank after the June 1 bombing.

"Few people in the right place and time also do the right thing. Joschka
Fischer did. He helped avert a catastrophe," Sha'ath said. Fischer left the
talks without making any comment. Ha'aretz

U.S. Bishops Issue Strong Call For Peace in Mid East
The US National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB) last week urged
Israel and Palestinians to return to the negotiation table, and they
condemned all violence and said that the rights of both sides must be
understood and respected.

In a strongly worded resolution, the bishops said that Palestinians "rightly
insist" on an end to Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza and the
practice of establishing and expanding settlements in the territories.
Likewise, they stated that the Israelis "rightly see" the failure of Palestinians
to respect Israel's right to exist and flourish within secure borders as a cause
of the conflict.

The resolution was issued after Latin Patriarch Michel Sabbah of Jerusalem
called for constant support from the Catholic world for a solution to the
Middle East crisis. In the resolution, the American bishops reaffirmed their
concern for and solidarity with the dwindling Christian community in the Holy
Land: "The native born Christian presence in Israel and the occupied
territories, less than 2 percent of the total, risks shrinking into insignificance,
in no small part due to the present troubles and their human and economic
consequences," the bishops resolved. ewtn

Dirty War Returns to Algeria
Algeria's chief justice has been assassinated in what is being termed as the
return of the dirty war in the embattled North African country. The judge was
assassinated on late Wednesday in an ambush in the Batna region about
430 kilometers east of Algiers. The attackers are believed to have been
Islamic insurgents.

It was the first assassination of a major Algerian figure since Abdul Aziz
Bouteflika became president of the country in 1999. Over the last two
months, Bouteflika has been battling both Berber unrest as well as renewed
Islamic insurgency.

Authorities have banned demonstrations in Algiers, which was the scene of
riots last week. But the president has offered the prospect that Berbers will
be granted cultural and other minority rights.

"The time has come to say that we're ready for a serene and responsible
dialogue in a calm and responsible climate once things have settled down,"
Bouteflika said. "There are solutions and neither the constitution nor the laws
of the republic are sacred." MENL

Nato Warns of Macedonia Civil War
Nato Secretary-General Lord Robertson has called on all parties in the
Macedonia conflict to reach agreement before full-scale civil war breaks out.
He spoke after Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski said that peace talks
aimed at ending the fighting in the country had broken down. Mr Trajkovski
blamed ethnic Albanian leaders, who, he said, were determined to carve up
the country. BBC

Sudan Urges Egypt To Revive Defense Pact
Sudan is urging Egypt to revive a defense pact suspended in 1989 in wake of
an Islamic coup in Khartoum. Sudanese officials said Cairo and Khartoum
have been discussing the prospect of a formal defense relationship over the
past six months. They said Mubarak has been pleased with the policies of
his Sudanese counterpart, Omar Bashir, over the last 18 months.

In late 1999, Bashir deposed his rival, parliamentary speaker Hassan Turabi,
regarded as the architect of Sudan's policy of supporting Islamic insurgency
in Egypt and other countries. Egypt downgraded relations with Sudan after
the Islamic coup and boycotted Bashir after a 1995 assassination attempt
against Mubarak in Ethiopia.

So far, Egypt and Libya have joined forces to help maintain Bashir's
government. Officials said both countries have agreed to deploy forces along
Sudan's southern border with Uganda. The border area is said to be a
conduit for weapons to the Sudanese People's Liberation Army. MENL

Subject: [bprlist] Blair refuses to meet Sharon
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>

(08:45) British PM refuses to meet
               Sharon

British Prime Minister Tony Blair has refused to meet
with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon during a layover on the
latter's visit to the United States next week.

Blair reportedly refuses to meet with the Israeli leader in
the wake of a BBC investigative program documenting
Sharon's role in the 1982 Sabra and Shatilla massacres
               in Lebanon.

Sharon's request to meet with Blair during a stop in
London next week was turned down by the British due
to what was called Blair's busy schedule, Army Radio
               reported.

However, the British reportedly fear that certain parties
may issue legal motions in the British court system
               requesting Sharon's arrest.

Subject: [bprlist] Tel Aviv's gay parade seeks equal love
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>

               TA's gay parade
               seeks equal love
               By Maia Ridberg

               (June 20) - Friday's Gay Pride
               Parade in Tel Aviv celebrates
               and protests the rights of
               Israel's homosexual community
               with a march, concerts, singing
and dancing all dedicated to this
               year's theme: Equal love.

"We are entitled to a day
dedicated to us; a day to feel
proud and happy about who we
are," says Etai Pinkas, head of
the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Association,
which is sponsoring the event in coalition with the City of
               Tel-Aviv-Yaffo.

Tel Aviv is a city known for its supportive atmosphere for
the homosexual community. "It is part of the attitude in
Tel Aviv to support groups that are different. It is a
unique, open city," agrees Adir Steiner, an assistant to the
Mayor and another of the event organizers.

The yearly event attracts many people from outside the
community too, who want to show their support for
friends and simply join in the celebrations.

As far as the city council is concerned, the mayor has
made it his priority to take an active role in helping the
homosexual community in Tel Aviv. This is the third year
the city is co-sponsoring the event, said Steiner.

Besides those living in Tel Aviv, event organizers hope
the parade will assist those in more conservative
communities who are still ashamed or fearful of
               homosexuals.

According to Pinkas, this day is a good opportunity to
expose the community to groups that shun homosexuality.
The media coverage shows we are "just a normal part of
every population," said Pinkas, who identified Arab,
immigrant and religious communities as among the more
conservative in their attitudes toward homosexuals.

Last year 50,000 gathered for the event after the parade
in Park Hayarkon, and this year even more people are
expected. The parade begins at 12 p.m. in Beit Ariela,
and stops in Kikar Rabin before culminating with a rich
array of concerts, dancing and partying in the park's Gan
               Yehoshua.

Some of Israel's top musicians, including Gali Atari,
Shlomi Shaban and Sharon Haziz, will perform along with
many other top singers and hip DJs at the after-parade
               celebration.

Organizers are doing "everything possible" to ensure
               security at the event.

The day's theme, equal love, is to "put a focus on the
demands for equal rights for homosexuals," says Pinkas.
"We demand that the state give us the natural rights that
other couples have to establish legal partnerships" and
benefit from lower taxes and mortgages granted to
               married couples.

Opposition to the annual event from homophobic voices
here has decreased every year as the gay community has
strengthened in both numbers and power. "The potential
for people to come out of the closet is not even beginning
to be fulfilled," and many people join the community
every year on this day, explains Pinkas.

The timing of Friday's parade at the end of June
coincides with gay pride events around the world. They
commemorate the June 1969 riots in New York City that
marked the beginning of the equal rights and pride
movement for homosexuals. Besides the parade this
Friday, members of the gay movement have been
commemorating the week with film screenings, drag
queen parties, and political lobbying at the Knesset.

Subject: IMPORTANT WYATT LETTER

VERY IMPORTANT LETTER FROM MARY NELL (MRS. RON) WYATT

In response to information posted on another website claiming to represent my husband's work, I feel it is now VERY important to set the record straight concerning these claims.

Bill Fry, (who operates the "Anchorstone.com" website and the "RonWyatt.com" website) along with others who are also representing themselves as having been a part of Ron's work and his research team, are now using Ron's name to try to raise money for "possible excavations" on some of Ron's sites, and are promoting a conference in Turkey on Noah's Ark.

Although some of them have been with Ron on trips or scuba diving, as have hundreds of other people throughout the years, none of these people are working with Wyatt Archaeological Research nor do they have access to any of Ron's data. None of them worked with Ron on Noah's Ark.

While any individual is free to conduct their own investigation, the activities of "Anchorstone.com" and Mr. Bill Fry do not represent the ongoing work of Wyatt Archaeological Research. After refusing the request by the Wyatt Archaeological Research board of directors to stop using the Wyatt name in a misleading fashion, he continues to do so.

Personally, what upsets me the most is that Mr. Fry, while making it appear he is representing Ron's work, is now asking for donations for "possible excavations". Ron NEVER did that. Nor would he ever do that.

After Ron's death, Mr. Fry began posting "updates" that contain a great deal of erroneous information. In addition, he is also selling materials, including those of Jonathan Gray, that he knows Ron did not want sold as representing Wyatt Archaeological Research. Ron had given Jonathan Gray permission to use our materials in his ministry in Australia and New Zealand. But his books and videos also contain some errors. All of us at Wyatt Archaeological Research have spent many hours answering questions in regards to discrepancies between our materials and Mr. Gray's. Ron would not allow these materials to be sold at his meetings when he was in Australia and New Zealand because they cause much confusion. We had many, many people tell us that they were under the impression that Mr. Gray had worked with Ron on the Ark of the Covenant and had been in the cave system, which is NOT true. Mr. Gray never worked with Ron on any research and field work.

It is particularly deceitful on Mr. Fry's part to advertise these videos as containing "all available information" on Ron's work. There is a great deal of information that these people do not have.

When Ron and I founded W.A.R in 1992, he and I were the equal co-founders. We asked Richard Rives to be our vice-president. We later added other officers, but W.A.R. began with only we three.

When Ron passed away, there was no question as to who was to take over as president of W.A.R. Only one man had the knowledge and experience in the work. Richard had worked on Noah's Ark in 1991 when he and Ron performed the "mini-excavation"; he went with Ron and I when we had lab analyses performed (he even arranged for some of them); he went with Ron in 1991 to search for the Tower of Babel and was with Ron when he believed he had possibly located it from a distance. He worked with Ron on Sodom and Gomorrah and was with Ron when they found the sulfur capsules (brimstone). He was with Ron when they were kidnapped, etc. I could go on, but the point I am making is that Richard Rives has been a part of the research and field work and a part of W.A.R. since we founded it.

About a year and a half before we learned Ron was seriously ill, Richard sold his home and business, uprooted his family and moved to Tennessee because he believed he was supposed to help Ron with this work. Everything had fallen into place when Ron became ill. As I look back on it all now, I can plainly see that God had arranged these things at the perfect time. The work would continue.

A few months after Ron's death, after Richard posted our Wyatt Museum website at the request of Ron and myself, Mr. Fry told our board of directors on a conference call that he would never comply with his agreement with Ron and I as long as Richard was president. Only then did I realize that Mr. Fry was trying to "takeover".

BACKGROUND ON THE ANCHORSTONE WEBSITE

Bill Fry asked Ron and myself if he could "help" our organization several years ago by putting up a website with our newsletters on it. Ron and I agreed. We had co-founded Wyatt Archaeological Research together and he and I both agreed to allow Mr. Fry to do this with several stipulations, one very important being that Ron and I approved all material posted to the site, as it was being represented as W.A.R.'s official site. Mr. Fry complied with the terms of our agreement until Ron's death.

At least a year prior to his death, Ron had asked me to put up our own website because he was uncomfortable with having to depend on someone else. When I didn't have the time to do this, we asked Richard Rives if he would do it. He, too, didn't have the time because he was running our museum and taking over more and more work as Ron's illness progressed.

Meanwhile, Mr. Fry quit his job when it became apparent that Ron was probably not going to survive.

After Ron's death, one of the first things Richard did was to put up our official website, to honor Ron's request. We never asked the Anchorstone site to close down. However, Mr. Fry became completely irate with this fact, accusing us of "competing with his business" and interfering with his ability to make a living.

We made every attempt to try to work with him and his site, but he refused to cooperate with us in any way and completely separated from Wyatt Archaeological Research. He now has no connection with our work, nor does he (nor did he ever) have access to Ron's data or "inside" information, yet he still attempts to lead people to believe that he does.

SELF-APPOINTED EXPERT

Especially be aware of this "conference" he is organizing. At this point in time, Wyatt Archaeological Research is not a participant. There is no one participating that truly represents Ron and his work.

I am strongly reminded of an incident with another man who actually worked with Ron on Noah's Ark. Although this man had only worked with Ron at the site on 3 occasions, he, too, thought he was "THE" expert, just as Mr. Fry is representing himself. This man made several documentaries and wrote a book on Noah's Ark. Then, when someone challenged him about the site, he publicly bet this challenger on Australian TV that he could prove that it was Noah's Ark. Without contacting Ron, (and without thorough knowledge of all the research Ron had done) this man took the photo from our newsletter of the mini-excavation that Ron and Richard had performed. He showed it to this challenger and said it proved there was man-made structure within the formation.

This man and the challenger, along with a film crew from Australia went to Noah's Ark. This man immediately went to the site of the mini-excavation, but to his surprise, there were no lighter colored ribs visible. All the while, the film crew was filming. This man, on film, lost his composure. He had not understood the research data at all. He didn't understand that the petrified remains were extremely fragile, and fragmented once exposed to the surface due to the weather extremes. The rain, snow and burning sun of the intervening 3 + years had taken it's toll on the excavated area.

His humiliation was painful to watch, carefully captured on film and broadcasted on one of Australia's main channels. But more importantly, his lack of knowledge and understanding on the subject did great harm. Perhaps millions of viewers of that TV show which featured this fiasco were robbed of the true facts because one man believed he was the expert. They were denied the evidence that God has preserved for this dying world.

Only Wyatt Archaeological Research has complete access to and knowledge of the data from Ron's years of research and field work. In light of the false claims of opportunists, it is extremely challenging to maintain the purity of the information that Ron worked so hard to gather over the years. We appreciate your support and extend our commitment to preserve the integrity of Ron's work and to continue to provide "reliable" information as it becomes available.

God bless,

Mary Nell (Mrs. Ron) Wyatt
