THE FINAL MOVE OF GOD ON EARTH BEFORE JESUS RETURNS
A message from the Dean of St.Andrew's Cathedral in Singapore

There is a great deal of teaching in the Bible concerning the signs of the end-times. There will be wars, famines, and earthquakes, but these are only "Me beginning of the birth-pangs" (Matthew 24:6-8). Of all the signs of the end-times, two of them stand out. These two signs indicate that the end is very near. What are they?

The first is when the gospel is preached throughout the whole world. "And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, as a testimony to all nations; and then the end will come.' (Matthew 24:14) In our times, the number of unreached peoples groups is rapidly diminishing, and only a few hundred are left.

The other sign is when the Jews turn to Christ. "Lest you be wise in your own conceits, I want you to understand this mystery, brethren: a hardening has come upon part of Israel, until the full number of Gentiles come in, and so all Israel will be saved.' (Romans 11:25-26)

There has been a veil over most of the Jews, who find it hard to believe that Jesus is the Messiah. This hardening has come about, so that the gospel may be preached to the Gentiles all over the world. When that is done, all Israel will be saved.

Today there is a growing number of Jews who believe that Jesus is the Messiah. They are called the Messianic Jews. In the nation of Israel, there are now fellowships of Messianic Jews in every city and town, witnessing (under great persecutions) to fellow Jews. The time is coming, and now is, that Jews should return to the God of their forefathers through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our Lord Jesus prayed in the High Priestly prayer, recorded for us in John chapter 17: "I do not pray for these only, but also for those who believe in me through their word, that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that thou hast sent me." (17:20-21)

When the Jewish believers and Gentile Christians become one in Christ (this is Christ's prayer), then the whole world will believe. This is the final move of God on earth before Jesus returns. It has already begun. Be part of this great move of God. Do not be marginalized! Read the book called "THE ONE NEW MAN IN CHRIST" by Dr George Annadorai.

Just a servant of Adonai Yeshua,

Thomas Ho

American Society for Microbiology General Meeting, Florida lifelines:
Virus crosses brain cancer

TOM CLARKE

What do you get if you cross the common cold virus with the polio virus?
A precision tool for excising a virtually untreatable form of brain
cancer, researchers told this week's American Society of Microbiology's
annual meeting in Orlando, Florida.

The viral chimaera targets the most common, and fatal, form of brain
cancer, malignant glioma. Glioma occurs in the glia cells, support cells
that are diffused throughout the brain, making it impossible to remove
surgically. And it does not respond to chemo- or radiotherapy. About
20,000 people are diagnosed with the cancer in the United States each
year.

Finding that a protein — CD155 — that invites poliovirus into cells is
also produced by malignant glioma cells, Matthias Gromeier and
colleagues at Duke University in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, set to
work.

They created a hybrid poliovirus that targets and destroys malignant
glioma in mice but does not cause polio in primates, an animal model for
polio in humans. "This could be a dream come true for people working on
brain tumours," Gromeier says.

"It's quite beautiful work," says Alice Wong, a microbiologist at the
California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. "It's an approach to
curing disease that shows great promise."

The US National Cancer Institute is now supporting the Duke team to
prepare a prototype antitumour virus for future clinical trials in
patients with incurable malignant glioma.

Previously, Gromeier genetically modified mice to produce CD155 in
specific nerve cells. Wild poliovirus stuck to, entered and exterminated
these cells. Gromeier recalls: "We realized we could exploit the natural
ability of this remarkable pathogen to kill specific cell types."

CD155 is an excellent target for the killer. It is produced only during
brain development and disappears in the mature brain. So it is present
solely in adult brains afflicted with glioma.

However, wild-type poliovirus infects motor neurons in the human central
nervous system, causing paralysis and sometimes death. So, to exploit
the virus, Gromeier's team first had to tame it.

By splicing a region of a human rhinovirus, which causes colds but
cannot infect nerve cells, into wild poliovirus, they produced a more
disciplined viral half-breed — one that does not cause polio but does
destroy glioma cells.

Gromeier's team implanted CD155-producing malignant glioma tumours into
mice and then injected the hybrid virus into the animals' spinal fluid.
A single dose of virus shrank the tumours dramatically within seven
days. After eight days they couldn't be detected at all.

Mice do not naturally produce CD155, so the team assessed the safety of
the virus by infecting 14 primates with it. Like humans, primates
produce CD155 during embryonic development. "None of them showed any
signs of weakness or other symptoms associated with poliomyelitis," says
Gromeier.

But before clinical trials can start, Gromeier's team must put their
hybrid virus through a few more hoops. They are now investigating the
possibility that their chimaera might recombine with wild-type
poliovirus or live oral polio vaccine — though rare, both are present in
the environment — and revert to a pathogenic form.

IDF uncovers explosives on Gaza border

Rajoub: 'IDF tried to assassinate me'

                  By Amira Hass, Amnon Barzilai
                  Ha'aretz Correspondents

A cache of 20 powerful explosives, hidden near a border fence in the
southern Gaza Strip, was discovered and defused yesterday by the Israel
Defense Forces (IDF). The explosives were found by IDF soldiers on regular
patrol yesterday afternoon near greenhouses at the Morag settlement in
south Gaza.

The discovery suggested to IDF officers that, despite a drop in recent days in
attacks against Israeli targets in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, that there
has been no change or second-thoughts in the Palestinian's commitment to
the use of terror and violence.

Late Monday/early yesterday morning, three Palestinian mortars fired from
the Gaza Strip landed within Green Line areas, east of the Erez checkpoint.
At the same time, Palestinian gunmen fired bullets at the a Jewish
settlement of Klil in Samaria. IDF forces returned fire.

Early yesterday, Palestinians shot at an IDF post near the Ganei Tal
settlement in the Gaza Strip. In the afternoon, a explosive device was hurled
at some Border Policemen in Hebron. Nobody was hurt in either attack. An
Israeli civilian was not hurt seriously yesterday when hit by stones thrown at
the A-Ram junction, near Jerusalem's French Hill neighborhood.

West Bank Preventive Security Chief Jibril Rajoub claimed yesterday at a
news conference at Bitounia that the recent IDF tank shelling of his home
was a deliberate attempt to assassinate him. He described the shelling of
his home as part of a sequence of acts undertaken by Israel in recent weeks
to "undermine the Palestinian Authority."

The bombing, he said, was not a personal matter, since the IDF is currently
attacking the Palestinian people as a whole. Asked whether he will take
steps to avenge the shelling of his house, Rajoub said that the matter is for
the PA political leadership to decide.

He said PA Chairman Yasser Arafat's leadership is the linchpin guaranteeing
the stability of the Middle East, and that "anybody who wants to harm him
[Arafat] risks putting the region as a whole on a downward slide.

Air
http://philologos.org/bpr/files/a012.htm

(Rev 16:17 KJV) "And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and
there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne,
saying, It is done."

Fred Kenison in his book "The Apocalypse of Revelation" (p. 218) makes an
interesting observation on the above:

"Why did the angel pour out his vial into the air? The Dictionary of New
Testament Theology (p. 449) says, 'According to classical concepts the aer,
air, filled the space between the earth and the moon. The Greeks
distinguished qualitatively between the aer as the lower, impure air (vapor),
and the upper, pure air, the ether. Since aer was the less pure element, it
was the home of the spirits...also at times regarded the air as the home of
demons.'"

Paul is perhaps alluding to this Greek concept when he says in Ephesians
2:2--

Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world,
according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in
the children of disobedience.

This idea of air being the home of demons or spirits brings to mind the UFO
phenomenon. The connection between UFOs and demons or evil spirits has
long been recognized. For example, the "typical alien abductee" is usually
interested in Eastern religions, New Age agendas, and/or paranormal
activities of all kinds. They have been involved in Ouija boards, astrology,
channeling, witchcraft, astral projections, past life regressions, etc. [Missler,
p. 110].

-----------------------

Another interesting point to ponder in regards to Rev 16:17 is this entry from
the Catholic Encyclopedia:

"One characteristic of Jewish demonology was the amazing multitude of the
demons. According to all accounts every man has thousands of them at his
side. The air is full of them, and, since they were the causes of various
diseases, it was well that men should keep some guard on their mouths lest,
swallowing a demon, they might be afflicted with some deadly disease. This
may recall the common tendency to personify epidemic diseases and speak
of "the cholera fiend", "the influenza fiend", etc. And it may be remarked that
the old superstition of these Jewish demonologists presents a curiously
close analogy to the theory of modern medical science. For we now know
that the air is full of microbes and germs of disease, and that by inhaling any
of these living organisms we receive the disease into our systems."

Growing influence in Central Asia seeks to establish 'Islamic regimes'

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: WorldNetDaily

Wed May 23,2001 -- A new Islamic group that "heralds bloody wars" and a
"territorial free-for-all" is extending its influence across mineral-rich and
strategically important Central Asia according to the Voice of Russia World
Service, the official broadcasting service of the Russian government. The
U.S. and NATO have been involved in Central Asia since the collapse of the
USSR, seeking to increase their influence with the former Soviet republics in
the region. U.S. and European petroleum corporations are also active in the
area, which has oil and gas reserves comparable to those of the Persian
Gulf. Muslim fundamentalists are seeking "to establish Islamic regimes
throughout Central Asia," and "intend to spread their influence into the
Caucasus," a region already plagued by bitter warfare.

Long-time guerrilla leader Juma Namanghani formed the "Islamic Movement
of Turkistan," basing the new organization upon his earlier group, the
"Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan." Namanghani ordered the change during
an organizational meeting held in one of his bases in Afghanistan. The term
"Turkistan" is the former name for Central Asia and represents the landmass
extending from China to the Caspian Sea. The term was used into the Soviet
era. Reports indicate that Islamic militants are extending their influence even
beyond "Turkistan" and into the predominately Muslim Chinese province of
Xin Jiang, also known as Uyghuristan, a name derived from its Muslim
inhabitants.

Russian authorities have long contended that the Islamic militants of Central
Asia are closely connected with the guerrillas active in Chechnya and other
parts of the Caucasus region between the Caspian and Black Seas. Moscow
fears renewed attacks against its Central Asian allies -- especially
Uzbekistan and Kirgizia -- by Islamic militants based in Afghanistan. The
increasingly serious assaults could include "even a march on the Uzbek
capital," Tashkent, according to the broadcast. The Russian elite know that
its influence in the region is sure to increase -- to the detriment of U.S.
military and economic interests -- since "not a single post-Soviet republic in
Central Asia is capable of shaking off the Islamic militants on its own,"
Moscow declared.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports that Russia and its Central Asian
allies are developing a "rapid-reaction force" to counter "what is seen as the
growing threat of Islamic extremism." The rapid-reaction force is to comprise
some 1,700 soldiers, with each nation keeping its troops within its own
borders. When an assault is launched, the entire force will concentrate in the
threatened nation. Included in the arrangement is an "anti-terrorist center,"
with a central location in Moscow and a satellite in Bishkek, the capital of
Kirgizia. The anti-terrorist center will also act as a central repository for
domestic and international intelligence information obtained in the region.
According to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's report, access to the new
center is highly restricted. The intelligence operation "does not talk to the
press."

U.S. cancels military exercise with Israel

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: UPI/WorldNetDaily

Wed May 23,2001 -- As the tension continues in the Middle East, the United
States has canceled a regularly scheduled military exercise with Israel, the
Israeli government and a Marine Corps general confirmed Wednesday. The
decision to cancel Exercise Noble Shirley, a live-fire training exercise for
U.S. and Israeli troops usually held in the southern Negev Desert region of
Israel in July and December, was made by U.S. European Command, the
Pentagon and the State Department, Maj. Gen. Robert Magnus, assistant
deputy commandant for plans, policies and operations, said.

"There are political reasons and military force protection reasons," Magnus
told United Press International. The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit on the
USS Kearsarge now in the Mediterranean Sea was supposed to take part in
the training exercise, which often practices long-range helicopter raids and
mobile assault. As Israel and the Palestinians continue to trade bombings
and mortar attacks, Israel is considered to pose a higher-than-normal risk of
terrorist attack, a Pentagon source said. Eight months after the bombing of
the USS Cole in Yemen, the military is loath to tempt new attackers.

The political reasons for canceling the exercise are unclear, but one
government official suggested the United States may not want to be seen
practicing with the Israeli military while it is using "disproportionate military
force" -- including helicopter attacks -- to respond to Palestinian
provocations. Israel has used U.S.-made weaponry, including F-16s, against
Palestinian targets. The Pentagon refused comment on the matter Tuesday,
deferring to the State Department. Secretary of State Colin Powell would not
specify whether the United States had asked Israel not to use U.S.-made
weapons in its operations against the Palestinians.

Operation Euro in France amid security concerns

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: EU Observer

Wed May 23,2001 -- The French Police presented yesterday plans to deliver
Euro 106 billion, 8 billion coins and 760 million notes, to the French banks
before the end of the year. The army, the gendarmes and the police are to be
on war position to guarantee the security of the transport, according to
Liberation. To show the scale of the Euro operation, the chief of the French
police said that the coins alone weigh three times as much as the Eiffel
Tower.

Trade Unions representing bank workers and security vans drivers are very
alarmed by the risks posed by Operation Euro and have threatened to strike.
This could hamper the introduction of the Euro into French banks. Currently,
five banks are robbed every day, writes the Guardian. Security van drivers
fear an increase in attacks during the delivery of Euros to the banks across
France.

Thatcher attacks Blair's euro policy

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: EU Observer

Wed May 23,2001 -- On Tuesday evening, former British Prime Minister
Margaret Thatcher lashed out at Tony Blair's stance on Europe, writes the
Times. "The thought that we might be absorbed into Europe is utterly
repugnant," said Lady Thatcher, "and I'll fight against it as long as I have the
breath to do so." Although Tories welcomed Lady Thatcher's criticism of the
Labour campaign, they were not so happy with her following comments on
the single currency. “I would never be prepared to give up our own currency,”
said the former PM. "To surrender the pound, to surrender our power of self-
government, would betray all that past generations down the ages lived and
died to defend."

Tory leader William Hague has said that, if elected, his party will keep Britain
out of the euro for at least another five years, but he has not ruled out
adopting the currency forever. Lady Thatcher has always had a knack for
enlivening any debate. Whilst her comments may have threatened to expose
Conservative differences over Europe, they also promise to inject passion
into a campaign which has left many voters unmoved.

Catastrophe averted in Southern Gaza; Israeli bomb squad dismantle 20

Wed May 23,2001 -- IDF officials are now reporting that bomb squad
technicians successfully dismantled a complicated and powerful string of
explosive devices that included twenty Russian made landmines. The
technicians worked over a period of hours. The explosives were spotted by
trackers in the area of the old hothouses of the community of Morag.

P.A. continues violence; One Israeli dead

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: Israel National News

Wed May 23,2001 -- In accordance with Prime Minister Sharon's decision,
Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer has issued a "stop fire" order,
canceled all initiated army actions, and given the order to open fire only in life-
threatening situations. Israeli officials responded with incredulity to the
assertion that the Palestinians do not attack Israelis, but in any event
expressed their certainty that the PA would not halt its violence. Yasser
Arafat departed last night for Paris, and will not return until Thursday.

Proof that a ceasefire is still theoretical, however, was provided today by
several instances of Palestinian aggression against Israel - including the
murder of an Israeli man. He and another man were working on a road east of
Ariel, in central Shomron, when they were shot from the direction of the
village Iskirah… Two other IDF forces that arrived on the scene to help the
wounded and pursue the attackers were also shot upon from the same
village... Near Rafiach, Palestinians have been intensively attacking IDF
forces with anti-tank grenades and light-weapons fire throughout the
afternoon... Light-weapons fire was opened this morning at the Jewish
community of Kfar Darom in Gush Katif (Gaza); no one was hurt... Two IDF
forces in Gaza were attacked as well; one of them returned fire. No one was
hurt...

Asher Mivtzari, a spokesman for the Gush Katif community of Kfar Darom,
said today, "We must be wary of ceasefires, because until now the terrorists
have always used these periods of quiet to their advantage, preparing large-
scale attacks..."

Syrian defense minister in Moscow for arms upgrade talks

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: AP/Ha'aretz

Wed May 23,2001 -- Syrian Defense Minister Mustafa Tlass discussed the
Mideast conflict and plans to upgrade his country's Soviet-made arsenal in
talks with Russian officials Wednesday. Tlass' visit follows a visit by Foreign
Minister Shimon Peres, who pushed for Moscow's support in settling the
Mideast hostilities. Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat is expected to visit
Moscow on Tuesday, moving up a planned June visit because of escalating
tension in the region.

Russia co-sponsors the Mideast peace process along with the United
States, but has played a far smaller role. It has developed friendly ties with
Israel following decades of animosity, but largely lost its clout with the
Palestinians and other Soviet-era allies in the Arab world it once armed
against Israel. Syria was one of the principal buyers of Soviet weapons,
receiving hundreds of combat jets, missiles and tanks during the 1970s and
1980s. In recent years, Russia has signed several agreements to modernize
Syria's aging arsenals and new deals are expected during Tlass' visit.

Meanwhile, Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov on Wednesday voiced
support for the Palestinians at a meeting with Arab ambassadors at the
lower house of Russian parliament, the State Duma. "We do not think that
there is a way to solve the Mideast problem other than to fulfill the decisions
of the United Nations Security Council to stop (Israeli) aggression, withdraw
troops and stop building settlements," he told reporters after the meeting.

Arafat rejects Sharon's offer as showdown over Israel-PA cease-fire
continues

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: Ha'aretz

Wed May 23,2001 -- Like Wild West rivals unable to decide whether to
resolve their blood feud at a backroom poker table or in a High Noon
shootout, Israeli and Palestinian politicians raised the ante for a cease-fire
and accused one another of bluffing in calling for a truce. Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon started the semantic showdown rolling late Tuesday by surprising the
Americans, the Palestinians, and even his own cabinet colleagues by
responding to the Mitchell Commission report on Israeli-Palestinian violence,
by ordering what amounted to a unilateral if highly conditional cease-fire in
the eight-month war.

Senior Palestinian officials, rejecting the Sharon announcements as a lie
meant to duck the recommendations of the international commission, said
Wednesday that the Palestinians' "status of self-defense" would continue at
least until Israel sweetened the pot with an immediate halt to West Bank and
Gaza settlement construction.

Ethiopian immigrants protest delays in aiding Jews left behind

Wed May 23,2001 -- Hundreds of Ethiopian immigrants gathered next to the
Prime Minister's Office yesterday to protest the government's continual
delays in authorizing the immigration of approximately 20,000 remaining
Jews in Ethiopia. The protest, organized by the Ethiopian lobbying group
South Wing of Zion, "brings the suffering of these Ethiopian Jews to the
public attention," said the organization's spokesperson, Shlomit Maman.

Gunbattle rages along Egyptian border

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: Kelly
                         Source: Jerusalem Post/AP

Wed May 23,2001 -- IDF troops and Palestinian militiamen waged a
protracted gunbattle for several hours today in the southern Gaza Strip along
the Israeli-Egyptian border. IDF troops came under heavy automatic weapons
fire from Palestinian forces who also shot four anti-tank grenades and threw
fire bombs. IDF Spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Ron Kitri said that troops were
guarding workers repairing the border fence between Israel and Gaza when
they came under fire.

News reports indicate that Engineering Corps soldiers were involved in
locating and destroying smuggling tunnels passing under the international
border from Egypt to the Gaza Strip when they too came under fire.
Meanwhile, Palestinian witnesses and police said IDF tanks entered
Palestinian territory in three areas of Gaza, and that tanks also shelled a
Palestinian police station.

Turkish Religious Leader Imprisoned For Saying Quake Was God's Revenge

An Islamic leader was taken to prison Tuesday where he will serve a two-
year sentence for claiming that an earthquake was God's revenge against
Turkey for its secularist policies.

Mehmet Kutlular, leader of the Nur Cemaati sect, was convicted of inciting
religious hatred for a booklet distributed by his group in October 1999.

The booklet said the quake that struck Turkey's northwest in August that
year, killing more than 17,000 people, was divine retribution for laws that ban
Islamic-style head scarves in schools and public buildings.

A court last year sentenced Kutlular to two years in prison, but allowed him
to remain free pending an appeal that was rejected by a court earlier this
year.

On Tuesday, an administrative court ordered police to take him to Istanbul's
Metris prison to begin serving his two-year sentence. He will be held for a
minimum of nine months and 23 days. AP

UNWED COUPLE FLOGGED IN AFGHAN STADIUM

KABUL, Afghanistan, MAY 23, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The fundamentalist Taliban
regime today publicly lashed an unmarried couple accused of having sex,
witnesses told Agence France-Presse.

Fazl Rahman and a woman identified as Nadia were given 100 lashes each
at the Kabul sports stadium in front of thousands of spectators, mostly from
the ruling Taliban militia, they said.

Taliban officials said a local court found the couple guilty of having sex three
months ago. "Adultery is a big sin, which brings about corruption and chaos
to the society, according to the Koranic reasons," a Taliban official said.

Around 30 women, fully covered in the mandatory "burkas," also watched the
flogging in a segregated section of the stadium.

The Taliban militia, who seized Kabul in 1996, have enforced strict
interpretation of Shariah, Islamic law, in the areas they control.

NURSES CALL FOR FUNERALS FOR THE UNBORN

LONDON, MAY 23, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Women who have a miscarriage or
abortion should be able to ask for a funeral for the unborn child, funded by
the National Health Service under new guidelines announced Tuesday, The
Telegraph reported today.

The advice published by the Royal College of Nursing recommended that all
patients should be spared any further grief and be allowed to cremate or bury
"fetal material."

The move follows reports that almost a half-million fetuses -- mostly from
abortions and miscarriages before the 12-week gestation period -- are being
incinerated en masse in the United Kingdom every year along with clinical
waste.

The nursing college said it was feared that some hospitals were flouting
government advice issued almost 10 years ago that disposal of "fetal
material" should be "sensitive and respectful," whatever the circumstances.

Asked whether by offering funerals nurses were equating the status of a fetus
with that of a dead child, the members of the working party that drew up the
guidelines said their priority was to help grieving parents rather than to make
ethical judgments.

Somewhere I recently read about the Sunday Law being by Executive Order now,
was it on this site or can anyone direct me to the text?

Also there was something about it related to a law proposed by Janet Reno,
regarding the classification of all religions not meeting on Sunday to be
classed as cults and the provision for the property rights being taken away
from such "cult" people. Again, can anyone direct me to the text. Thanks. ps

Center of the Bible

* What is the shortest chapter in the Bible?
(Answer - Psalm 117)

* What is the longest chapter in the Bible?
(Answer - Psalm 119)

* Which chapter is in the center of the Bible
(Answer - Psalm 118)

* Fact: There are 594 chapters before Psalm 118

* Fact: There are 594 chapters after Psalm 118

* Add these numbers up and you get 1188

* What is the center verse in the Bible?
(Answer - Psalm 118:8)

Does this verse say something significant about God's perfect will for our
lives? The next time someone says they would like to find God's perfect will
for their lives and that they want to be in the center of His will, just send
them to the center of His Word! Psalm 118:8 (KJV), "It is better to trust in
the LORD than to put confidence in man."

Subject: [bprlist] Firms grow new source for medicines

Biotech companies modify plants' genes to produce human proteins
Firms grow new source for medicines
BY PAUL JACOBS
Mercury News

A handful of biotech companies are genetically engineering plants to produce
human proteins, turning farms into factories for medications aimed at a host
of human diseases.

Large Scale Biology in Vacaville uses genes from lymphoma patients at
Stanford to grow a customized cancer vaccine in leafy plants that are close
cousins to tobacco.

Epicyte in San Diego uses corn to make human antibodies against herpes
and
human sperm for gels that can block sexually transmitted disease and
prevent
conception.

These and other companies are betting that transgenic crops, which can
produce as much as 40 pounds of a human protein per acre, will replace
more
expensive fermentation systems that are the industry standard for brewing up
human proteins by the vat.

``Plants are the most efficient producers of proteins on the planet,'' said
Epicyte President Mich B. Hein. ``They get their energy from the sun and all
their nutrients from the soil. They make proteins essentially for free once
they are up and going.''

Cost, however, isn't the only reason for choosing plants over the animal
cells widely used by biotechnology companies to produce human proteins. Or
for choosing plants over cows and goats that have been genetically
transformed to produce human proteins in their milk.

Some worry that cattle are vulnerable to hoof and mouth disease, which could
quickly wipe out any herd genetically altered to produce therapeutic
proteins. And there is concern that animal cells may harbor viruses or other
contagions that could infect humans.

``Proteins in plants don't have issues with mad cow disease or hoof and
mouth,'' said John McClellan, director of marketing for ProdiGene in College
Station, Texas.

The theory behind producing human proteins in plants -- or in animal cells,
bacteria or yeast -- is simple: Pluck the gene, a bit of DNA that carries
the instructions for making the protein, out of a human cell and insert it
into the other species.

Flood of biotech drugs

Now, 25 years after the birth of the biotechnology industry, there are
hundreds of human proteins -- many of them antibodies -- in various stages
of testing for treating disease. But, for the moment, there are not enough
government-approved manufacturing facilities for the expected flood of
biotech drugs.

In 1998, Immunex in Seattle launched Enbrel, a modified human protein
grown
in animal cells for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The drug has been
such a huge success -- with sales of $650 million last year -- that new
patients must now sign up and wait their turn before starting on the drug.
The waiting should disappear next year when the company opens a
manufacturing facility in Rhode Island, but not every firm with a promising
protein will be able to find the production capacity it needs.

``The people who come out on top will be the people who secure
manufacturing,'' said Immunex spokeswoman Robin Shapiro.

Immunex scientists are considering plants as an alternative way of producing
future protein products, but, says Shapiro, ``that's a very long way off.''

The capacity problem is a reason why companies working with genetically
modified plants are so hopeful these days, although no plant-grown human or
animal protein has yet won Food and Drug Administration approval, although
a
few are in the early stages of testing in patients.

``We won't really know the answer until we get the first one through,'' said
Kurt Hoeprich, director of market development for plant-grown biotech drugs
at Dow Chemical. Dow is working with Epicyte to grow corn with antibodies
against herpes and human sperm.

Researchers at Large Scale Biology have already shown they can make large
quantities of human proteins in tobacco-like plants (Nicotiana benthamiana)
grown in greenhouses in Vacaville and Kentucky. One of the proteins grown
and extracted with a high degree of purity is alpha-galactosidase, an enzyme
missing in patients with Fabry's disease, a rare inherited disorder that can
lead to heart and kidney failure. The company has no plans to market the
human protein; two other companies are racing to do that. ``We're using it
as a model for the process,'' said the company's CEO, Robert L. Erwin.

The plant-based companies are aware of the growing protest movement
directed
against genetically engineered crops, although the plants targeted in those
protests were ones altered to deliver their own pesticides. Last year, the
agricultural biotech industry was shaken by the news that a
pesticide-containing corn called Starlink -- approved for animal feed but
not human consumption -- had entered the food supply.

Environmentalists are concerned the same thing might happen with plants
containing pharmaceuticals.

Protecting food supply

``Who wants to have a taco that gives you a drug you don't absolutely
need?'' asks Rebecca Goldburg, a senior scientist with Environmental
Defense.

Large Scale Biology's Erwin says that using tobacco-like plants that aren't
like any crop intended for human use and that don't have the human protein
genes in pollen or seeds is the best answer.

The companies that are transforming corn say they are being very careful to
keep the pharmaceutical crops far removed from fields where corn is grown
for human or animal consumption.

Says Epicyte's Hein: ``The bottom line is to produce in areas where the
pollen can't spread to other crops.''

What has been the impact of the Torah on the general rights of women in
Israeli society? In other words, How much REAL(not pie in the sky)
freedom do women in a nation officially ruled by the Torah REALLY have?
Do they have things like women's shelters, etc.

I read some feminist literature a while back that was rather negative, to
say the least. But it seems that much of what is written about the
Middle East nowadays is simply twisted religious or political propaganda.
But given the general "nature" of that part of the world, I thought the
writer might just have a point.

Mal 2:14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness
between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt
treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.
