SADDAM BENT THE FATHER; ARAFAT BENDS THE SON

by Emanuel A. Winston, Middle East Analyst & Commentator

The Mitchell Commissionís Report was carefully crafted by Arabists in the State Department who began under Bill Clinton and continued into the new George W. Bush Administration. It has not been noted in the Media that George Mitchell is a Lebanese Arab or that the "Peace" he supposedly crafted in Ireland has collapsed - but, that agreement at least demanded that the IRA give up their weapons - something Mitchell did NOT demand of Arafatís PLO terrorists.

The Mitchell Commission was exquisitely planned to bridge over to the next Administration and designed to remain under the control of the U.S. State Department. The Clinton Administration formulated it to be the instrument to press the next Administration to continue its meddling into the conflict between Arafat and the Israelis.

Note! The Mitchell Commissionís conclusions did NOT castigate either side but, had carefully buried in its language a Virus which called upon Israel to cease her natural expansion of her towns and villages as if this was the ësine qua noní (only reason) that Arafat wages his unnecessary war of attrition. What nation on this planet is restricted from expanding her cities as her population grows? But then, we Jews in America are familiar with "restrictive covenants", having fought long and hard for our freedom to live in non-Jewish communities. In Israel, the ancient home of our ancestors, Arafat demands that Jews be ethnically cleansed so only Palestinian Muslims may live and walk on the land.

Saddam Hussein bent President George Bush Sr. by refusing to cease his aggressive actions and continuation of building his war machine. Saddam successfully enlisted other Arab nations and such nations as France, Russia and China who wanted his business.

Similarly, Arafat demanded that the other Arab nations side with him against Israel, although they mostly despise Arafat. Other Arab nations, namely Syria, Iran, Iraq, Egypt and Jordan, lobbied the European Union (E.U.) to support Arafatís claims knowing they would lead to the eventual elimination of Israel.

Inside of our American nation, we have always had the growing power of an arrogant bureaucracy which became a "Shadow Government" owing its allegiance to the military-industrial complex (as defined by President General Eisenhower). These are the State Department apparachniks who stay in power through all Administrations and run our foreign policy as they see fit. They work their way around any President, the Congress and only respond to certain industries, regardless of their malevolent goals.

Foisting such a game plan upon the next Administration was typical of the U.S. State Department bureaucrats who see themselves as Americaís true governing body - creating her foreign policy according to their own vested interests. They view Presidents and Secretaries of State as mere temporary impediments to be rolled over and manipulated - unless the President or the Secretary of State is in tune with their policy.

In the case of Israel, the U.S. State Department was defeated in 1947-8 in their attempts to insure that the new Jewish State of Israel would not be born. However, they have worked diligently ever since to subvert Israelís well-being whenever possible. They are dedicated Arabists, tied closely to American oil corporations and weaponsí industries - each of whom are loyal to their Arab oil client nations. These industries act as well paid lobbyists for their clients, in addition to contributing generously to both controlling political parties.

This translates into a Washington power block whose main task is to implement the hostile intentions against Israel by all the Arab nations. They are, in effect, a highly powered fifth column who owes their first allegiance to foreign nations - not America. This Arabist power block would have succeeded years ago into weakening Israel sufficiently so that the surrounding Arab nations could win one of their seven successive wars to eliminate Israel. They were, however, usually blocked by the American people and the American Congress who like, admire and respect Israel and the Jewish people.

These anti-American actions include arming the Arab nations with every weapon and advanced technology the West could develop for cash and influence. This also includes advanced conventional weapons as well as catastrophic weapons of mass destruction such as NBC (Nuclear, Biological and Chemical weapons).

While our greedy oil and weaponsí industry made obscene fortunes in sales, we in the West also sold the Arabs the technology to level our own cities and poison our own atmosphere with chemicals that kill instantly and biological substances that kill every organic thing, including humans, animals, plants and our own water resources.

Our Presidents allowed this potential apocalypse to evolve because they were deceived into believing that it was good for business when we pleased and patronized the Arabs. Were it not for the oil and the lucrative markets flowing from it, the West would have viewed the Arab nations as a dangerous backward people who could not be trusted with BB guns, let alone missiles, high tech aircraft, nuclear bombs, and biological horrors any radical Islamist could carry into civilized cities and scatter into the wind. Could it be that the hoof and mouth epidemic in Europe was brought in by one or more of Saddamís cohorts?

Presently, there is an effort to stop Israel from defending herself against an onslaught of primitive rioting Arabs who call themselves "Palestinians" - although their parents or grandparents came from the surrounding Arab countries as transient workers. (1) Secretary of State Powell, in the name of the "Shadow Government" called the U.S. State Department has already abused the powers of his office by demanding that Israel cease defending herself against the killing terrorists.

The terror goes on in a myriad of ways via 160 mortar shellings of civilians, suicide bombing, drive-by shootings, sniper shooting of babies, lynching and mutilating of children - killing of Jews in any and every way possible - all on the "Green Light" orders of Yassir Arafat. The Media generally quotes only the statistics since the Arabs began their war of attrition on the Jewish New Year September 28, 2000. They usually ignore the mortality rates since the signing of the Oslo Peace Accords September 13, 1993. Almost 500 Jews have been killed and thousands more injured, some maimed for life.

Each time Israel strikes at the source of the Arabsí shootings, the Europeans and the State Department howl "unfair and excessive use of force". The Leftist Media invariably accuses Israel with reports so biased that one can only be reminded of Josef Goebbels and his manipulation of a willing world Media to persuade the public at large that eliminating Jews was a good and proper thing.

Now, we have the Mitchell Report greasing the path of President George W. Bush and the U.S. State Departmentís foreign policy to condemn Israelís defense of her own citizens. Arafat is ramping up the use of heavy weapons smuggled in to his Palestinian Authority to prepare for his coming major war. The most recent smuggling was by boat from Lebanon. When Israel caught that boat they laid out the weapons showing that Arafat had anti-aircraft SA-7 Strella rockets, anti-tank missiles, RPGs (rocket-propelled grenades, mortars, Kalashnikov rifles, bombs, explosives, Katyusha rockets with the range to reach all of Israelís populations centers. Bush, Jr., Colin Powell, Americaís Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld all know that Arafat is deliberately inviting attacks by Israel so that he can scream to the international community to come and save his people (who he cares so little for).

Arafat feeds his own women and children (as well as the Israeli women and children) into his machine of human sacrifice. The more blood, the louder and louder the well-rehearsed howls from the Media, the E.U., the U.N. and the Arabist community. The end product is to force the current Bush Administration to come down hard on Israel. Israel is to be coerced into establishing a Palestinian State which will be the last link connecting a string of hostile Arab nations together. This will be a necklace of dangerous nations who have adopted strict Islamic law which mandates that they be dedicated enemies to any non-Moslems. It is their Muslim duty to continue their ëjihadí (Holy War) against the rest of the world until the world accepts Islam. Perhaps a good example is the Islamic Taliban in Afghanistan who recently implemented Islamic law against Hindus who will now be required to wear a distinctive yellow mark as non-Muslims. This is reminiscent of Hitlerís yellow star which he used to mark Jews for later ethnic cleansing. Islam views itself as an exclusive religion which the West is just starting to face as an unrelenting force which is dedicated to the subjugation or elimination of all other religions.

The neo-terror state of Palestine will be the centerpiece in a deadly necklace stretching from Iran, Iraq, Syria to Jordan and Lebanon. Lebanon will be absorbed by Syria just as quickly as Jordan is being subverted by its majority population of Palestinians who are loyal to Arafat. From there the necklace spreads to Sudan where the Muslims are decimating the Christians.

Saudi Arabia will fall to Egypt which itself is under pressure by the Muslim Brotherhood to become another strictly Islamic State. Only this time Egypt, with its full compliment of American arms will become an Islamic military colossus in the South, just as Iran is in the North.

Then there is the American State Department which is actually a "Shadow Government" only concerned with its own vested interests. Unfortunately, their misguided foreign policy and their blunders will probably lead to the Third and last World War. Historians will look back and identify the time frame where the U.S. State Department played a leading role in the destruction of Israel and coalescing the militant forces of radical fundamentalist Islam to face the West in a war to end all wars.

Israelís demise will be the lynchpin that will release all the accumulated military energies of the Arab nations - all with our American help. We Americans have always looked off-shore for our enemies. Indeed, they were there. First the Soviet Union (now called Russia) and a growing China to whom we have transferred some of our most terrible technology - as well as North Korea, Iraq, Iran, Syria, etc.

If ever there was an evil empire, our State Departmentís "Shadow Government" fits that description insofar as the Jewish State of Israel is concerned. Clearly, it is a dark castle that needs airing. Israel is and remains a high profile target on their firing range, despite deep and genuine support by the American people and the American Congress for the only democracy in the Middle East.

As Saddam bent the father so now is Arafat bending the son - with the help of an ongoing Arabist U.S. State Department. The free and civilized world will soon be confronted with the choice of eliminating the threat of extinction from radical nations or accepting their demands of submission as America is asking/demanding of Israel.

Right now they are saying that there are low water sheds all over North America. Where the jets spray the rain stops. No rain means no snow on the mountains, which then means no water run off for drinking. They spray here everyday and this winter has been dry! Also I found the the ground here this year does not seem to hold water? My garden is dry only two hours after a good rain.

No water means crop failures which means no food. Victoria is under water rationing right now! Our lake is very low and it looks like we will have to truck water from the lake. If they can control the weather like I think they can, we are about to see the driest and hottest summer ever. Also notice that there are going to be electrical blackouts. Imagine when all the air conditioners kick in. I have noticed elsewhere in the world that they are having power problems too. I think this is going to be son of y2k. But this time it may be more covert and more real.

I just got a digital camera, so I can send you some current photos. It's sooo cool!

Record dust clouds cause continental rifts

Monster dust cloud from China drifts over North Korea and Japan as it embarks on a world tour in April

By Richard Stenger
CNN

(CNN) -- A new report suggests that alarming increases in desert dust are the cause of droughts rather than the result, a surprising find that comes on the heels of record levels of stifling particulate matter in China and Africa.

Scientists had previously theorized that wind-borne desert dust actually enhanced rainfall, presuming that large airborne particles formed larger cloud droplets.

But detailed observations of parched regions in central Africa demonstrated the contrary, according to the study, which focused on the African Sahel, a grassy savanna bordering the Sahara desert that once provided natural pastureland for livestock.

Increasing population pressure has turned much of the semi-arid expanse into desert, leading to higher levels of airborne dust during the rainy season. And the dust and other particles in the air actually produce smaller water droplets in clouds, which means hard times for Sahel farmers and herders.

"The effect of dust on cloud properties is to inhibit precipitation," said author Daniel Rosenfeld and colleagues in the May 15 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dust begets more dust
Using satellite and aircraft observations, the team found that clouds forming within desert dust contain small droplets bearing little liquefied fruit. Moreover, the increased dust and drought can beget still more dust and drought.

"The reduction of precipitation from clouds affected by desert dust can cause drier soil, which in turn raises more dust, thus providing a possible feedback loop to further decrease precipitation," said Rosenfeld, an Earth sciences professor at Hebrew University in Israel.

The authors note that manmade substances are more to blame for killing the rain over dry lands, such as particulate matter from smoke and pollution.

No matter the cause, dust storms that swirl beyond borders have increasingly blanketed countries sometimes oceans away from their source.

The streets of Baichen in the Jilin Province of northern China on April 7 during the peak of the dust storms that gave birth to the dust cloud
Winds have pushed dust from the Sahara across the Atlantic, where the minute grains settle into a reddish haze over much of the East Coast.

And last month, a sprawling Asian dirt storm blew across the Pacific and sprinkled millions of tons of the Gobi and Takla Makan deserts as far east as Florida, making one of the largest North American dust clouds ever recorded.

"You couldn't miss it," said Duane Hilton of Bishop, California. "We usually have 50 miles visibility, but at one point you could see dust in the air looking at objects just 8 to 10 feet away."

Much of Asia soiled again
Such episodes have comparatively little effect on air quality in the United States. But the periodic plumes cause major headaches in cities hundreds of miles downwind like Beijing, blotting out the sun, slowing traffic and closing airports.

The eastward winds have long spurred protests from residents of Korea and Japan, who have faced similar, if milder, dust epidemics from China. The three nations have organized a committee to find a strategy to combat the dust, according to the Earth Policy Institute, an environmental advocacy group.

Overplowing, overgrazing and ill-advised government policies have exacerbated the drought conditions, according to institute president Lester Brown.

"Accelerating wind erosion of soil and the resulting land abandonment are forcing people to migrate eastward, not unlike the U.S. westward migration from the southern Great Plains to California during the Dust Bowl years," he said Wednesday.

Subject: [bprlist] RACE MYTHS
From: ruby
Date: Thu, 24 May 2001 08:37:15 -0400
--------
Race-myths from the extreme left
Editor's Introduction -- Many of today's schoolbooks promote the extreme
left's brand of racism. Textbook-writers disseminate race-myths and
racial stereotypes that leftists favor, and the writers conceal any
information that contravenes the leftists' racial ideology. Here is an
article that describes how these practices have shaped the treatment of
slavery -- and especially the treatment of the Atlantic slave trade -- in
some world-history books.
from The Textbook Letter, November-December 1992
How Textbooks Obscure and Distort
the History of Slavery
Jonathan Burack
In the year 869, a group of slaves rose in a great rebellion against the
Abbasid empire -- an empire whose territories now form Iraq, Kuwait and
parts of Iran, Jordan, Syria, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. For fourteen years,
the slaves fought their Abbasid masters in the marshlands of what is now
southern Iraq. And in the end, they were crushed. Their leader's head was
paraded through the streets of Baghdad, and their uprising became nothing
more than a bloody footnote to the history of Islam.
Not even as a footnote, however, does the uprising appear in any of six
world-history texts that I have examined during an inquiry into the
treatment of slavery in schoolbooks:

Merrill's The Human Experience 1990
McDougal, Littell's Links Across Time and Place 1990
Harcourt Brace Jovanovich's World History: People and Nations 1990
Prentice Hall's World History: Patterns of Civilization 1991
Heath's World History: Perspectives on the Past 1992
Scott, Foresman's History and Life 1993
Viewed in one way, this omission may not seem grave, for the rebellion in
869 had no lasting impact on the development of Islam or on the overall
course of history. Viewed in another way, though, the omission
illustrates a serious failing of all the books in question, because the
slaves who staged that rebellion were blacks. They had been imported from
East Africa to drain marshes and to toil under conditions as bad as any
that would exist, much later, in Brazil or in Mississippi or on the
Caribbean islands.

If the books that I have surveyed are representative, students in our
high schools are reading little, if anything, about the slave trade that
delivered millions of blacks to Islamic societies in the Middle East. Yet
this commerce, established centuries before Europeans arrived on the
scene in the mid-1400s, affected the history of the Middle East and
Africa alike. Moreover, it was part of a bigger system whose later
ramifications would include the great Atlantic slave trade -- the trade
that eventually would convey more than 10 million blacks to the New
World. Students cannot hope to understand the Atlantic trade unless they
know about the African trade from which it arose.

This isn't to say that the books entirely ignore the slavery that existed
in Africa before the Europeans' coming. The books usually do mention it,
but the descriptions are fleeting at best, always distorted, and often
apologetic. The textbook-writers do not project the idea of slavery as a
moral outrage. They rouse our sense of outrage only when, later, they
describe the Atlantic trade and the Europeans who controlled it.

The slave trade that supplied the Middle East had two major components:
the East African and the Trans-Saharan.

The East African trade handled slaves from the eastern and southern parts
of the continent. Most of the slaves were natives of a region that now
includes such states as Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi and
Mozambique; they were moved to ports on the Indian Ocean or the Red Sea,
then were shipped to Islamic lands lying to the east and the north. In
his book Transformations in Slavery, the historian Paul E. Lovejoy
estimates that 2.4 million slaves were traded along the East African and
Red Sea coasts during the years 800 to 1600 [see note 1, below]. Most
were ultimately sold to customers in the Middle East and North Africa,
who used them as soldiers, concubines, administrators and laborers.

The Trans-Saharan trade handled slaves captured throughout western
Africa. These were assembled at various points on the southern edge of
the Sahara (in a region that now includes Chad, Niger, Mali and Senegal)
and then were taken northward, across the desert. They eventually were
distributed to buyers throughout North Africa and the Middle East.

How is this commerce being presented in schoolbooks? Consider the East
African component first:

The schoolbooks I have examined say nothing substantive about the East
African trade, and some of them say nothing whatsoever. For example,
Harcourt Brace Jovanovich's World History: People and Nations merely
mentions slaves in a brief listing of trade goods:

Sailors explored the seas and developed trade routes linking all shores
of the Indian Ocean. Africans exported gold, slaves, ivory, hides, and
tortoise shells and imported porcelain and weapons.
Merrill's The Human Experience describes Arab and Persian domination of
trade in ports on the Indian Ocean, but it does not mention slaves at
all. Neither does Prentice Hall's World History: Patterns of
Civilization. Neither does D.C. Heath's World History: Perspectives on
the Past. The Heath book, in describing the commerce that flowed through
East African city-states, says only this (on page 319):

For centuries, the Arabs acted as middlemen in the Indian Ocean. They
brought Asian luxuries to Africa and African luxuries to Asia. In the
busy markets of Kilwa, Mombasa, and Malindi, Arab sea captains displayed
porcelain bowls and vases from China and jewels and cotton cloth from
India. In return, they obtained African ivory, gold, tortoise shells, and
rhinoceros horns. The 50-pound elephant tusks were carved into Indian
chess pieces and the hilts for swords and daggers. Tortoise shells were
made into decorative combs.
Scott, Foresman's History and Life is another book that fails to mention
slaves among the products that moved in the East African trade after the
year 700, though Scott, Foresman's writers (like Heath's) are diligent in
telling about elephant tusks.

lt seems strange for a book to extol the importance of ivory while making
no mention of the slaves who transported the ivory from Africa's interior
to the coast -- slaves who sometimes were sold at the coast, by their
African or Arab owners, along with the ivory that they had carried. It
seems all the stranger because these history books regularly tell how
commodities were transported across the Sahara: by caravans of camels. In
the East African trade, however, the presence of the tsetse fly precluded
the use of hoofed animals for transportation, because the fly transmitted
pathogens that were lethal to such beasts. Traders therefore used salable
slaves to transport ivory and other goods, and this arrangement helped to
make the trading system profitable.

While the East African slave trade is hardly acknowledged in these
world-history books, the Trans-Saharan trade, along with the prevalence
of slavery in West Africa, receives somewhat more attention. The books
typically focus on the kingdoms of Ghana, Mali and Songhai (which
flourished in the years from about 500 to 1600), and they typically
mention slaves as trade goods. Yet none of the books makes clear how
important slavery was to the West African kingdoms' growth and power.
Even McDougal, Littell's Links Across Time and Place fails in this
respect, though McDougal, Littell's writers later will offer an unusually
good treatment of the slave trade between West Africa and the Americas.

The two most important commodities in the commerce that crossed the
Sahara were gold and salt. These should get special attention; and in the
books that I have sampled, they do. But why do all the books fail to tell
that both commodities were produced by slaves, and that slaves made up
the armies that held the West African kingdoms together?

The books also fail to give any sense of the importance of slaves as
goods in West African commerce. Lovejoy estimates that 5 million West
African slaves were sent across the Sahara during the thousand years that
ended in 1600. After 1600, the trade expanded. It lasted well into the
20th century, and it may still exist. Does this not argue for giving some
serious attention to it in our history textbooks?

Apparently not. Instead, we find a heavy emphasis on the wealth and
accomplishments of the African kingdoms, perhaps with sidebars that tell
about jewelry or offer inflated estimates of the sizes of African armies.
If slaves appear at all, they appear in connection with the elaborate
pilgrimage of Mansa Musa, a king of ancient Mali, who journeyed through
Cairo to Mecca in the early 1300s. And the textbook-writers' aim is
surely not to tell about slavery but to underscore Mali's power and
wealth. See, for example, pages 314 and 315 of Heath's World History:

Five hundred slaves, each carrying a six-pound staff of gold, arrived
first [at Cairo]. They were followed by 100 camels, each of which carried
a 300-pound load of gold dust. . . .
The people of Cairo learned that Mansa Musa was a devout Muslim who was
making a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca. His visit to Cairo created
a sensation. One Egyptian later wrote that Mansa Musa gave away so much
gold that the value of this precious metal declined for 12 years.

A shorter account appears in HBJ's World History, with each of the 500
slaves carrying gold in the form of a four-pound bar, rather than a
six-pound staff.

The depiction of West African kingdoms sometimes decays into giddy
boosterism. On page 334 of Scott, Foresman's History and Life, for
example: "Benin is one of the best examples of a strong, just, and
materially advanced African culture that developed in the absence of
European or Middle Eastern influence." The writers do not explain what
they mean by "just" or why they assign that description to a kingdom
whose economy depended heavily on slave raiding and the slave trade.

Dubious Comparisons
The textbooks that I have surveyed provide no significant treatment of
African or Middle Eastern slavery until they are ready to introduce
American slavery and the slave trade that spanned the Atlantic. When that
moment comes, the books almost invariably make a point of depicting
African or Middle Eastern slavery as benign, comparing it favorably with
the slavery that evolved in the New World. We see this even in McDougal,
Littell's Links Across Time and Place. That book correctly tells that
Africans were partners with Europeans in operating the Atlantic trade,
and that Africans, not Europeans, captured and enslaved most of the
people who eventually were shipped to the Americas. Yet the book also
says, on page 459:

In most African societies, slaves had some legal rights and often were
integrated into the families of their masters. Slaves in Africa were
permitted to marry nonslaves, and the children of slaves often were
freed. In contrast to North America, the practice of herding big gangs of
slaves to work on plantations and isolating them from the free population
was unusual.
Such impressions are common [note 2]. They also are dubious, and many
scholars have challenged them. Roland Oliver, for example, in his recent
book The African Experience [note 3], gives this assessment for Africa as
a whole:

Evidence from one end of the continent to the other agrees that the
captured or bought slave, male or female, juvenile or adult, was a person
entirely without rights, who could be put to any kind of work, punished
at will, killed as a sacrificial victim or sold as a chattel either
inside or outside the community.
For a rather egregious example of how textbooks mislead students, look at
page 566 of Prentice Hall's World History:

Slavery had existed in Africa since ancient times, as it had in many
other parts of the world. In Africa, slaves were often people captured in
war. Others were people who sold themselves into slavery for food and
shelter during drought or famine. Sometimes a society took slaves in
order to increase its population. In time, many slaves were absorbed into
their new societies.
The transatlantic slave trade was very different front African slavery.
Africans were forced to leave their own societies and were shipped
thousands of miles across the Atlantic. In the Americas, they faced a
completely unfamiliar culture. . . .

The distinction implied here is false. The writers clearly want to
promote a romantic, happy-family picture of African slavery, portraying
it as fundamentally different from slavery in the New World.
Unquestionably, the transatlantic trade differed from the African trade
in many ways, but the essential scheme was the same in both cases: People
were captured and then were taken far away from their own societies -- so
far that the idea of escape became meaningless. Only when escape was
unimaginable could the captives be freed from their chains; only then
could they be resocialized, taking up their subservient roles in a new
land. This was true for slaves inside Black Africa, for slaves who were
marched across the Sahara, and for slaves who were shipped across the Red
Sea or the Atlantic.

A number of schoolbooks suggest that slaves in Africa and the Middle East
were regularly able to win their freedom. Two things can be said about
such claims. With respect to most African societies, the claims are
false. And when societies did show high rates of manumission, the moral
implications of such rates were exactly opposite from what the
schoolbooks convey.

In any ongoing system of slavery, a high manumission rate necessarily
created a high demand for replacements. In other words, for every slave
who was set free, a free man or woman had to be enslaved. The moral
significance of this is clear if we recall that the taking of new slaves
often involved the slaughter of innocents, and the new slaves themselves
usually suffered substantial mortality while they were being transported
to market. All in all, a society in which manumission was rare would have
caused less agony and death, in the distant populations from which its
slaves were drawn, than a society in which the manumission rate was high.

What About Racism?
Another misrepresentation seen in some textbooks is the claim that racism
was not a factor in the slave systems of Africa or the Middle East.
Scott, Foresman's History and Life, on page 252, says that "there was
little racism in the Muslim world." Then, on page 334, it offers a grand
non-sequitur:

Some international trade in slaves also existed in the Muslim cities.
However, this slave trade was not based on race since both light- and
dark-skinned people were sold in slave markets [note 4].
Even without the non-sequitur, Scott, Foresman's assertions would
certainly seem odd to anyone who had looked through Bernard Lewis's Race
and Slavery in the Middle East, with its dozens of quotations from Middle
Eastern writers [note 5]. Here is Lewis's rendering of a pronouncement by
the l4th-century historian Ibn Khaldun: "Therefore, the Negro nations
are, as a rule, submissive to slavery because [Negroes] have little [that
is essentially human] and have attributes that are quite similar to those
of dumb animals."

With the partial exception of McDougal, Littell's book, the world-history
texts that I have surveyed fail to provide legitimate accounts of African
slavery or of the slave trade within Africa. Further, all the books state
or imply a stark contrast between African or Middle Eastern slavery and
the slavery that Europeans fostered in the Americas. Though some real
distinctions can be made, the distinctions suggested by these books
aren't valid. Such distortion -- combined with mawkish writing about the
splendors of African kingdoms -- merely replaces old myths of African
barbarism with new myths of African innocence and glory. And in the
process, history is sacrificed.

in Africa. Cambridge University Press (London). 347 pages. [return to

The notion that New World slavery had few (if any) Old World precedents
is not confined to high-school books. It appears, for example, in ". . .
to form a more perfect union . . .", a middle-school American-history
text sold by Walsworth Publishing Company. In the teacher's edition, a
note advises the teacher to "Emphasize that the institution of slavery in
America was sharply different from slavery elsewhere." [return to text]

The idea that racial distinctions made New World slavery unique is
another notion that shows up in middle-school books as well as
high-school books. Walsworth's ". . . to form a more perfect union. . ."
insists that racism made American slavery singularly "cruel" (page 121).

The Lord's Lightning—Bill Koenig

May 23, 2001

When arriving this morning at the White House's northwest security
gate (the entrance to the West Wing and the Press Room), I noticed
that security checks were being handled by phone instead of the
computer.

I asked one of the guards about what had caused the problem. She
said, "you won't believe it but our guardhouse was hit by lightning
last night, and it knocked out our computer.”

There was also a "tornado watch" last night from Washington
eastward, covering all of eastern Maryland. I saw the dark clouds
moving east but fortunately there were no tornadoes. (A small
tornado did touch down 50 miles south of Washington.)

I believe that the Lord showed last night and today that He was not
happy with the visit of the Dalai Lama to the White House. Although
this was not his first visit to the White House, it was his first
visit to the Bush White House.

The Dalai Lama is a distinguished spiritual leader of the Tibetan
Buddhists, and he has a nice and fun personality. However, he is a
false god, who speaks a false message. Most importantly, he doesn´t
acknowledge Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Furthermore, isn't it interesting that on the day the Dalai Lama is
welcomed to the White House, the other big news to break is Vermont
Senator Jim Jeffords´ probable decision to leave the Republican
Party to become an Independent, a move that will give the Democrats
a majority in the Senate?

This decision will throw the Senate into disarray, affecting all
the Republican committee chairmanship positions and making
Democratic Senator Tom Daschle the Senate Majority leader.

Moreover, on the first day the Jeffords´ story emerged, the Dalai
Lama arrived in Washington, and President Bush and Secretary of
State Powell both came out in favor of the Mitchell Report on the
Middle East, a report that calling for Israel to stop settlement
construction in the West Bank and Gaza.

Additionally, to put these events into perspective, John McTernan
has noted that Senator Jeffords is from Vermont, the first and only
state to approve same-sex unions and a state that is strongly
pro-choice. And tomorrow, his expected party defection will throw
the U.S. Senate into instability, creating doubts and roadblocks
for the president´s upcoming judicial appointments and a variety of
legislative programs.

Is the Lord speaking to the Bush Administration and our nation?
Absolutely! And there will be no compromises.

*** Playboy gets domain name rights

GENEVA (AP) - Playboy has been awarded the rights to the Internet
domain name HughHefner.com in a U.N. panel ruling released
Wednesday. The adult entertainment empire brought the case against
the Good Samaritan Program of Owings Mills, Md., which had
registered the name. The U.N. World Intellectual Property
Organization ruled that Good Samaritan had no right to the name of
Playboy founder Hugh Hefner and ordered it transferred to the
company. Playboy contended that the Hefner name is an integral part
of the corporation. Hefner, 75, has been editor in chief of Playboy
magazine since 1953 and was president of the Playboy Club from
1959-86. The company said he remains "the living embodiment of the
lifestyle his magazine celebrated," and is "one of the most popular
media and entertainment figures in the world." Playboy said its name
was used simply to attract Internet traffic to Good Samaritans
sites. Good Samaritan failed to respond to Playboy's complaint, and
presented no evidence to the U.N. panel.

Hamas: BBC reporter expressed solidarity

By DOUGLAS DAVIS The Jerusalem Post 24 May 2001

LONDON - A senior BBC correspondent in the Gaza Strip is reported to have
told a Hamas gathering that journalists and media organizations are
"waging the campaign shoulder-to-shoulder together with the Palestinian
people"

The alleged remarks, by BBC Arabic Service correspondent Faid Abu
Shimalla, were reported on the Hamas Web site, which said they were made
at "an impressive and well-attended ceremony" earlier this month to honor
some 140 Palestinian, Arab, Islamic, and international journalists and
attended by Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin.

A BBC spokesman last night confirmed to The Jerusalem Post that Shimalla
has been the Gaza Strip correspondent of the BBC Arabic Service for the
past five years, but he said the BBC was unable to locate the Web site and
could not comment further.

He noted, however, that Shimalla is "a senior and experienced journalist who
knows the requirements for impartiality."

At the ceremony, Hamas official Ismail Abu Shanab said journalists should
be honored for "the special role they have played through their cameras,
pens, and skills, as well as through their rare courage and daring which they
have demonstrated by their joining the nation struggling fiercely against the
enemy." He praised their "accurate depiction of the terrorism employed
by the Zionist enemy and its vile crimes, as well as the outstanding
courageous portrayal of our children and martyrs."

Speaking on behalf of the journalists, Shimalla, who is described as a
correspondent of the BBC, thanked the Hamas movement for holding the
event, "despite the pace of current events and the sensitive circumstances
applying to journalists and media organizations, which are waging the
campaign shoulder-to-shoulder together with the Palestinian people.

Subject: [bprlist] Yarmouk dam

Jordan posts tender for Yarmouk dam

Project held up by sour ties with Syria

                  The Associated Press

AMMAN - The state-run Jordan Valley Authority has invited tenders for the
construction of Wehdah Dam on the Yarmouk River near the Syrian border.

JVA said in a statement obtained yesterday that the dam's construction is
expected to start in October and last at least 40 months.

Wehdah Dam, which is 102 kilometers (62 miles) north of the Jordanian
capital Amman, is expected to generate electricity and provide drinking water
for parched Amman and its suburbs and help in the irrigation of the Jordan
Valley, the country's food basket.

The 100-meter (330-foot) high dam is estimated to cost 120 million Jordanian
dinars ($169 million). Financing comes from the Kuwait-based Arab Fund for
Economic and Social Development, the Jeddah-based Islamic Development
Bank and the Abu-Dhabi Development Fund. The Jordanian government is
expected to bear part of the cost, but the share has not been determined
yet.

Wehdah, or unity, dam is a joint project with Syria which was agreed upon in
1985. But it was put on hold because of political differences between the two
Arab neighbors under the late King Hussein of Jordan and the late President
Hafez Assad of Syria.

But the project was revitalized when ties improved since King Abdullah II
inherited the Jordanian throne in 1999 and Assad's son Bashar assumed
power last June. The late Assad had been suspicious of Hussein's moderate
policy of peace with Israel.

Israel presently controls the major part of both these water resources, the
Jordan River basin and the westward-flowing West Bank aquifers. As a result
of Israel's occupation of the Golan Heights and its control over southern
Lebanon, Israel controls the headwaters of the Jordan River. Through the
occupation of the West Bank, and restrictions on Palestinian access to their
water resources, Israel controls both the westward-flowing aquifers and all
waters which flow eastward into the Jordan. In addition, Israel is drawing
water from the Yarmouk River, and is currently vetoing Jordan's receipt of a
World Bank loan for the development of a dam at Makrin, upriver of Israeli
influence. By its pre-1967 borders, Israel accounts for only 3% of the Jordan
basin area; yet it currently has control of the greater part of its waters. At
present, Israel is drawing an annual 70-100 million cubic meters (mcm) from
the Yarmouk, and is piping 1.5 mcm per day from Lake Tiberias in its
National Water Carrier (Rudge 1992).

Core Issues of the Palestinian-Israeli Water Dispute
Applied Research Institute - Jerusalem (ARIJ)

------------------

In addition to the Jordan River, the Yarmouk, a tributary is also hotly
contested. The Yarmouk is 42 kilometers long and largely rises (80%) in
Syria. The tributary flows south westerly and forms a part of the tri-border
between Syria, Palestine, and Jordan. Frederic Hof considers the
seriousness of this area and its impact on the Middle East peace process in
Middle East Policy. The water in this area had been shared throughout the
1940's and 1950's as all nations had supported the cooperation agreement
developed in 1948. But, a serious meltdown in relations began over the
Yarmouk tributary in the 1960's. Specifically, a 1964 Arab summit allowed for
three states-Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon- to channel water from the Jordan
river through Syria and into the Yarmouk tributary as a response to Israel's
diversion of waters in the early 1960's. The diversion would have allowed for
Jordanian control over these waters and would have deprived Israel from a
key water source. This conflict was a key issue in the June 1967 War
between Israel and its Arab neighbors. Israel's decisive victory gave them
increased leverage on the Yarmouk as well as waters in the Golan Heights.
Then, after beginning their occupation of the Golan Heights, Israel enforced
its authority on the Yarmouk and began stealing its water away from its Arab
neighbors. The conflict arose because Jordan is currently deprived of one of
its main sources of land irrigation. The Yarmouk is the 'lifeline' to Jordanian
because of its impact on irrigation which is crucial to the Jordanian
economy. Because Jordan is a desert country there are few water options
which means that the Israeli takeover of the Yarmouk is deadly to the Arab
community and the Jordanian nation. Jordan views the Yarmouk and Jordan
rivers as 'do or die matters' and, "the conflict over these rivers will determine
security in the region especially after the Israeli occupation of the Syrian
Golan and the 12 kilometers of the Yarmouk."(Isaac, 1993: 130) This dispute
illuminates the shortage of water in the area and how a cooperative solution
is necessary to establish peace in the region as well as ensuring that every
individual has enough water to survive. (Hof, 1995; Isaac, 1993; Lowi, 1995,
1993; Cooley, 1988 )

The seriousness of this water conflict created hostilities until 1994 when
peace was finally achieved between Israel and its neighbors. Between the
1967 conflict and the 1994 peace, there were several attempts at building a
dam on the Yarmouk which would span the Syrian-Jordan border, but this
idea was left untouched after Israel's violent reaction to the Arab's 'diversion
scheme'. But, with some American intervention, the stage seems to be set
for new cooperation between the two sides. Syria and Jordan have argued
over the construction and operation of Syrian dams on the Yarmuk.
Recently, Jordan and Syria have proposed to jointly build dams on the Upper
Yarmuk to reduce the river flow into Israel. In preparation for the eventuality of
formidable water shortage in the next few decades, Jordan and Syria have
signed an agreement to attempt to cooperate with each other on building a
dam in the Yarmouk. Israel has adamantly rejected the idea and continues
to push and lobby theWorld Bank and the United States to halt consideration
of the project; but Jordan and Syria hope to continue the project if they can
secure the funding. (Cooley, 1984: 19-20) (Lowi, 1993: 171-183) This is one
example of how a military attack could be waged by Israel to its Arab
neighbors. The building of a dam could be seen as a threat to Israeli security
and with a new Prime Minister who is intolerant of his aggressive neighbors
could be prompted to attack if the water supply to his country were taken
away. This specific example demonstrates the implications of water scarcity
in the Middle East upon the already tenuous peace negotiations. (Hof, 1995;
Isaac, 1994; Lowi, 1993, 1995; Cooley, 1984)

Subject: [bprlist] There Should No Flesh Be Saved
From: Pam
Date: Thu, 24 May 2001 10:56:16 -0400
--------

The following might be of interest. I do not claim to be correct so if
anyone has sounder, scripturally based, explanations for the ‘elect´;
the ‘blessed´ and the 45 days, of Daniel 12:12; the time of the
shortening of the days; the ‘great tribulation´ and, the ‘afflictions´.
I would like to hear it. These are my thoughts, I know, but they are, I
think, scripturally sound. However, if I have deviated from the words
of the LORD, not from the words of man, I would like to know about it.
Praise the Lord!

"…there should no flesh be saved…"

Matthew 24:21-22 tells that, sometime in the future, ‘those days´ will
be shortened in order that some flesh is saved. Mark 13:19-30 tells us
the amount by which ‘those days´ will be shortened has already been
established. Matthew tells us it will be a time of ‘great tribulation´
and Mark tells us the reason for the tribulation will be ‘affliction´
upon all flesh. Matthew tells us the days will be shortened for the
‘elect´s´ sake and Mark tells us the ‘elect´ have already been chosen.
Praise the Lord!

I Corinthians 15:39 tells us that men, beasts, fishes and birds all
have different ‘flesh". From the above, therefore, it appears obvious
the ‘great tribulation´ and the ‘affliction´, of which Our Lord spoke,
falls upon ALL flesh. The flesh of men, of beasts, of fishes and of
birds. No flesh will be spared. The questions then must be, a) who are
‘the elect´, b) when will be ‘the days of the great tribulation´ and c)
what will ‘afflict´ all flesh? My answers are:

a) ‘The elect´ will be the ‘blessed´ of Daniel 12:12. They are 'the
elect' because they have already been chosen by God and they are
'blessed' because they will enter the millennium in their natural
state. Praise the Lord!

b) The time of "the great tribulation´ will be the final 45 days of Dan.
12:12 "Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three
hundred and five and thirty days."

c) The ‘affliction´ upon all flesh will come from the vials of
Revelation 16.

Rev. 16:2 - upon the flesh of men - "And the first went, and poured out
his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon
the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped
his image."
Rev. 16:3 - upon the flesh of fishes - "And the second angel poured out
his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and
every living soul died in the sea."
Rev. 16:4 - upon the flesh of man, of beasts, of birds - "And the third
angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and
they became blood."
Rev. 16:8 - upon men, again, - "And the fourth angel poured out his
vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.

Rev. 12:10 - the darkness before the dawn - "And the fifth angel poured
out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of
darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,"

Those afflictions, I think, will constitute a ‘great tribulation´, much
greater than the tribulations of the seals and the trumpets.

God Bless you. Charlie Baker.

Bush Urged by Arafat: 'Finish father's peace plan -
Comments by Bill Koenig

May 24, 2001

Yasser Arafat encouraged President Bush, yesterday, to get
personally involved in the Middle East peace process and to “finish
his father´s business” in the Middle East.

The Bush Administration has isolated Arafat. However, things are so
tense in the region that it appears that the Bush team believes
they have no other choice but to deal with him (they have been
careful not to commit one way or the other in recent meetings). As
reported this week, Arafat´s regime is near collapse and he has
called on Syria, Iran and Iraq to come to his aide.

Below is an excerpt from the BBC article, “Bush urged: ‘Finish´
father´s peace plan,” and a link to it.

Below the article is an excerpt from John McTernan´s book, “God´s
Final Warning to America.” John tracked what happened in America
when Arafat visited the U.S. for peace talks.

President George W. Bush and his administration need our prayers.
Lets pray that God´s will be done!

Bush urged: ‘Finish´ father´s peace plan

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has appealed to US President
George W Bush to get personally involved in the Middle East peace
process.

The plea was made during a telephone conversation between the two
leaders in which Mr. Arafat called for a new summit to be convened
to discuss ways of implementing the Mitchell report on the
conflict, published earlier this week.

Mr. Arafat reminded Mr. Bush that his father, George Bush senior,
had started the peace process in the region when he was the US
president.

And he said it was up to his son to complete it.

Earlier, Mr. Bush had appealed directly to the Israeli and
Palestinian leaders to end violence, urging them to seize the
opportunity offered by former Senator George Mitchell´s report on
restoring peace.

Both agreed with Mr. Bush´s proposal to develop a framework for
implementing the report´s recommendations, the White House said.

Hospital offers new babies their own domain name

        BY PUTSATA REANG
        Mercury News

Babies born at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City will go home with a birth
certificate, a tub of toys and diapers -- and a new, unusual perk: a free
domain name.

In the first program of its kind, Sequoia Hospital is joining Namezero.com, a
Los Gatos domain name provider, to offer parents of newborns a chance to
register a domain name for their baby where they can build a home page to
post pictures and information.

``Our folks are real techno-savvy,'' said Linda Kresge, chief nurse executive of
Sequoia. ``A lot of folks who have babies here really enjoy connecting with
their families. They can get quick information and pictures within seconds.''

Under the pilot program, which starts today and lasts the rest of the year,
new parents will be able to register their babies online with a special
password. The first year will be free as part of the promotion, and continuing
the service will cost $29.95 annually.

From customized Web sites where people can order gifts and flowers for the
newborn to Web-based press conferences announcing births, hospitals
nationwide are starting to experiment with ways of helping people announce
births through the Internet, said Peggy O'Neill, an analyst for Nielsen
NetRatings, an online research firm.

``It's the wave of the future,'' O'Neill said. ``People want to know when a baby
comes out. They want to e-mail the family.''

The offer comes as more parents giving birth are part of generations X and Y -
- the people most likely to already be wired and who would naturally gravitate
toward this type of service, O'Neill said.

Already, 30.6 million domain names ending in .com, .net and .org are in use,
according to VeriSign in Mountain View, which sells and keeps a registry of
domain names. And industry experts expect those numbers to continue
growing.

``It could quite possibly become as important as a birth certificate,'' said
VeriSign spokeswoman Cheryl Regan. ``Some people even look at them as
a family heirloom they can pass down.''

Bruce Keiser, CEO and co-founder of Namezero -- the third-largest host of
domain names in the world, with 1.9 million users -- said it's practical for
parents to register their babies for a domain name when they are applying for
other forms of identity, such as a Social Security number and birth
certificate.

``Individuals realize domain names are a way for people to stake out a
permanent identity on the Web,'' Keiser said. ``We're starting at ground zero
with newborns.'' He hopes to expand the program to other local hospitals.

As society becomes more transient, with people moving around for school
and new jobs, domain names will remain a common place where family and
friends can locate each other, Keiser said.

``It stays with you,'' Keiser said. ``It's the single worldwide standard for
finding content, people and places on the Web.''

*** Mistrial vindication for cult chief

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - Christopher Turgeon has denounced his defense
lawyer as "an agent of Satan," preached about the end of the world
being just three years away and claimed he is the second coming of
an Old Testament prophet. The apocalyptic cult leader's lawyer says
his client is "nuts," but jurors deciding his first-degree murder
trial weren't able to make such a determination - or decide on a
verdict. A judge declared a mistrial Tuesday after jurors came back
deadlocked, providing a vindication of sorts for the cult leader who
was accused of orchestrating the killing of a follower. Turgeon is
already serving an 89-year sentence for his part in a July 1998
crime spree in San Diego that prosecutors said was meant to trigger
the downfall of the United States.

*** Gun battles erupt in Gaza Strip

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israeli troops and Palestinian militiamen waged
fierce gun battles in the Gaza Strip and near Jerusalem on
Wednesday, undercutting faint hopes that a U.S.-backed truce plan
might break the cycle of Mideast violence. Thirty-eight Palestinians
- including 15 children - were wounded in a 3 1/2-half-hour
firefight at the Rafah refugee camp in Gaza. In the West Bank, an
Israeli motorist was killed in a Palestinian ambush, and on the
outskirts of Jerusalem, an 86-year-old Israeli man was seriously
wounded by Palestinian fire. The truce plan presented by an
international commission headed by former Sen. George Mitchell
called on both sides to halt violence and urged Israel to freeze
construction in Jewish settlements in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

*** Siberian floodwaters pass Yakutsk

YAKUTSK, Russia (AP) - Debris-filled water surged past the largest
city in a flood-threatened region of Siberia on Wednesday, allowing
local authorities and residents to catch their breath and assess the
damage. But emergency workers using icebreakers and explosives were
unable to destroy all the ice jams clogging the Lena River and the
rising waters still posed a threat to villages downstream. Earlier
this week, workers dumped loads of sand to reinforce dikes around
the regional capital Yakutsk as the river's level rose to a record
30 feet and floodwaters threatened to encroach on the city center.
The Kremlin announced that President Vladimir Putin would tour the
flooded region on Thursday. But this year an unusually cold winter
and a warm spring combined to create a huge deluge, the likes of
which authorities haven't seen in Siberia for 100 years.

*** Yugoslavia drafts war crimes law

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia (AP) - Yugoslavia has drafted a law to enable
the extradition of former President Slobodan Milosevic and other war
crimes suspects to a U.N. court, a top official said Wednesday. The
draft law would allow for the extradition of suspects, but only
after a legal review of their cases at home, said Nebojsa Sarkic, an
assistant justice minister. "We tried to balance demands for respect
of Yugoslavia's legal sovereignty and the necessary cooperation with
the United Nations," Sarkic was quoted by the Tanjug news agency as
saying. The law will soon be reviewed by the Yugoslav government and
discussed in the country's parliament, he said. Yugoslavia's new
authorities have been reluctant to hand over Milosevic and other war
crimes fugitives to the U.N. tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands,
citing a constitutional ban on the extradition of Yugoslav citizens.

*** President Bush calls Mideast leaders

WASHINGTON (AP) - Direct appeals by President Bush failed to end
fighting Wednesday between Israel and the Palestinians. Efforts to
arrange a meeting between Secretary of State Colin Powell and Yasser
Arafat remained on hold. Bush telephoned the Palestinian leader and
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who offered the Palestinians an
immediate cease-fire Tuesday. Israeli Defense Minister Binyamin
Ben-Eliezer ordered the Israeli army to open fire only when lives
were endangered. Before Bush's calls, the Palestinians rejected
Sharon's offer as a public relations ploy and said the army had
violated its own rules.

*** Powell: Africa is U.S. priority

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) - Colin Powell promised U.S. help to Africa in
combating disease and nurturing democracy and said he felt an
"emotional twinge" Wednesday as the first black secretary of state
to visit the continent. Powell also voiced support for continued
U.S. training of African peacekeepers, although he said the key is
"to find the right balance between getting too committed and not
getting committed enough." He noted that some in the administration,
principally Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, favored a sharp
reduction in overseas commitments. Powell was warmly received on his
first stop on a four-nation African tour. He said he picked this
West African nation, one of the world's poorest, because it was
"firmly committed to democracy" and "a model for the rest of the
world." Powell also was to visit South Africa, Kenya and Uganda.

*** U.S. seeks IMF, World Bank reform

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Bush administration is telling Congress that an
overhaul of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank will
be top priorities in its effort to prevent a recurrence of the
1997-98 global financial crisis. While that pledge will play well
with longtime critics of the two institutions, a broad coalition of
liberals and conservatives in Congress is pushing the administration
to seek change in another area, debt relief for poor countries.
Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill faced a barrage of questions Tuesday
in his first appearance before the House Financial Services
Committee on the administration's refusal to support an effort to
get the IMF and World Bank to wipe out all debt owed to them by the
poorest nations.

*** Reform-minded cardinals visit Rome

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Cardinals from around the world ended an
extraordinary meeting Wednesday, with an influential European urging
his fellow prelates to be frank about the challenges facing the
Roman Catholic Church. "Freedom of speech is an absolute condition
for good management in the church," said Cardinal Godfried Danneels,
67, of Belgium, who is considered a possible successor to Pope John
Paul II. Danneels and several other cardinals took on the sensitive
issue of independence of bishops from the Vatican, including giving
more voice to the bishops when they are summoned to Rome to meet
with the pope. "Bishops should speak more to the point and more
frankly," he said. Danneels confirmed that talk about
"collegiality," a code word for democracy, was not a dominant theme
at the three-day, closed-door meeting.

*** Poland to exhume Jewish remains

WARSAW, Poland (AP) - Poland's Jewish community has accepted a
government decision to exhume the remains of hundreds of Jews
massacred by their Polish neighbors and buried in a mass grave in
the town of Jedwabne in 1941, Warsaw's rabbi said Wednesday. Rabbi
Michael Schudrich and other Jewish representatives agreed to the
exhumations, as long as they are carried out with the participation
of rabbis, so that officials investigating the massacre can
determine how many people died, the Justice Ministry said in a
statement. Schudrich said the government showed clear understanding
of Jewish law. Justice Minister Lech Kaczynski had suspended
permission for the exhumation Sunday after Jews objected on
religious grounds.

*** Red Cross denies charge vs. Israel

GENEVA (AP) - The International Committee of the Red Cross on
Wednesday denied the organization ever intended to describe Israel's
settlement policy in the West Bank and Gaza as a "war crime." ICRC
spokesman Vincent Lusser said remarks at a May 17 briefing in
Jerusalem by Rene Kosirnik, the head of the agency's delegation to
Israel and the Palestinian areas, were misinterpreted. "We did not
say, and would never say, 'Israeli settlements are a war crime,'"
Lusser said. Kosirnik had said colonizing occupied territory breaks
the 1949 Geneva Convention, the treaty intended to protect civilians
in areas of conflict. Israeli authorities condemned Kosirnik's
comments, saying they compromised Mideast peace negotiations. He was
summoned to the Foreign Ministry after making the statement and
asked not to express views on the settlements.

*** High priest of Samaritan sect dies

MT. GERIZIM, West Bank (AP) - Levi Ben-Avishai Ben-Pinhas, the high
priest of the tiny Samaritan community that traces its lineage back
to biblical times and has followers in Israel and the Palestinian
areas, died Wednesday of old age. He was 82. The community
immediately named a successor, 79-year-old Yefet Shomroni, who will
take office after the traditional 30 days of mourning. The
Samaritans number only about 650 people. About half of them live on
Mt. Gerizim overlooking the Palestinian city of Nablus in the West
Bank and the rest in the Israeli town of Holon, near Tel Aviv. The
Samaritans claim descent from the people of the northern kingdom of
Israel, which separated from the southern kingdom of Judea after the
death of King Solomon, about 3,000 years ago.

*** New group to monitor human research

WASHINGTON (AP) - As Congress considers ways to protect people who
volunteer as subjects in medical experiments, a new organization is
announcing plans to monitor researchers and offer them ways to
accredit their programs. The Association for the Accreditation of
Human Research Protection Programs, based in Rockville, Md., will
issue standards on how researchers should choose their subjects and
monitor their progress as they test everything from new medicines to
behavioral therapy. The process will be voluntary, but research
institutions praised it as a way to improve public confidence in
research in light of recently publicized mistakes that killed or
harmed human research subjects.

*** Magazine ads promote abortion pill

NEW YORK (AP) - A national association of abortion providers is
launching a magazine advertising campaign for RU-486, or
mifepristone, the abortion pill treatment that received approval
last fall from the FDA. The ad campaign, which will run in more than
a dozen magazines over the summer, was announced Wednesday by the
National Abortion Federation, a professional group that represents
some 400 abortion providers throughout the country. The ads will
begin appearing in July in People and Self magazines, and in 11
other magazines through the end of the summer, including Glamour,
Mademoiselle, and Marie Claire.

*** Japanese lepers to get compensation

TOKYO (AP) - Former leprosy patients wept with joy Wednesday after
Japan's prime minister unexpectedly said his government will not
appeal a court ruling ordering compensation for banishing them from
society under a draconian law. The government of Prime Minister
Junichiro Koizumi also expressed its regrets for suffering caused by
a 1953 law that forced leprosy patients into colonies on small
islands or remote mountains and broke apart families. Koizumi's
decision - which came after he met with plaintiffs in the
compensation suit for longer than expected - was a surprise. News
reports throughout the day had said the government had all but
decided to contest the May 11 verdict, with intense pressure
reportedly on Koizumi, who gained power last month after promising
widespread reforms, to appeal.

*** Rat poison spills off New Zealand

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - A trailer packed with lethal rat
poison plunged into the sea Wednesday, threatening one of the
world's most famous feeding grounds for whales, dolphins and seals.
Officials were monitoring conditions off Kaikoura on New Zealand's
South Island after a truck crashed on the coastal highway, and a
trailer it was towing with 18 tons of rat poison fell into the sea.
The brodifacoum rat poison pellets turned the blue sea water green,
police said. Kaikoura is one of the few places in the world where
whales can be seen feeding near the shore throughout the year. It is
home to large colonies of dolphins and seals, attracting tourists
from around the world.

ISRAEL DOWNS LEBANESE PLANE
The first anniversary of Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon has its security
forces on high alert for a terrorist "commemorative" attack - and the
increased precautions paid off late today. The Israel Air Force tracked
and followed a small Lebanese Cessna plane - first by radar, then by
planes, then by helicopters - from the moment it set off on an unauthorized
flight from Beirut into Israel late this morning. Once it crossed into
Israel, apparently near Rosh HaNikra, the Israelis signaled it several
times to stop, with no results. Fearing the worst, the Israelis had no
choice but to down it, which they did over the coastal town of Mikhmoret,
between Caesaria and Netanya. The lone pilot was killed in the crash.

Dudu Cohen, a resident of Mikhmoret, lives in the town's first row of
houses near the beach: He told Arutz-7, "Around 11:30 AM, I saw a little
low-flying plane surrounded weirdly by three helicopters... Suddenly a
burst of fire came out of one, and the light plane burst into pieces, which
fell all around us..." Other reports said that two F-16s were following
the Cessna, and were later joined by Apache helicopters. Residents all
along the coast also said they saw the low-flying plane.

An investigation is underway to ascertain whether the lone pilot was in
fact on his way to commit a suicide attack, or was a beginning pilot who
had lost his way. Air Force Commander Maj.-Gen. Dan Halutz explained
today
that even in the latter eventuality, the danger of the plane's accidental
crashing into a residential area was too great to allow the plane to
continue flying.

Lebanese radio stations, including a Hizbullah station, are reporting that
the pilot was an innocent Cypriot citizen who was hijacked by Israeli jets
from Lebanese airspace.

P.A. VIOLENCE CONTINUES, ISRAEL HOLDS FIRE
Despite close to a dozen Palestinian attacks since yesterday afternoon,
officials in the Prime Minister's office say that Ariel Sharon plans to
give the PA "a few more days" to implement a ceasefire. Until then,
Israel's unilateral ceasefire will apparently remain in effect. Nadia
Matar of Women in Green said on her weekly spot on Arutz-7 today,
"Apparently, Jews like Asher Iluz [murdered by Arabs near Ariel yesterday]
continue to be sacrificed on the altar of 'proving to the world' that
Israel is not to blame."

Foreign Minister Shimon Peres told his Labor party colleagues today that
not only has Arafat not ordered a ceasefire, he has even instructed his men
to intensify their attacks against Israel.

The area of the Tel Aviv Central Bus Station has been closed throughout the
afternoon after warnings of a planned terrorist attack were
received. Three Arab suspects were arrested.

Attacks today included: Mortar shells on Netzarim, soldiers targeted near
Halhoul, and shooting along the Trans-Judea Highway, which was closed to
traffic. Last night's violence included the targeting of IDF positions
near N'vei Dekalim (southern Gaza) and the IDF's Southern District
Coordinating Office in Gaza (no injuries and no return fire). In addition,
a soldier was lightly injured in a bomb attack north of the Sufa Checkpoint
in Gaza. An IDF officer was lightly hurt this afternoon when an explosive
went off near Rafiach. In the Hevron region, three armed Palestinians were
arrested today after a chase by Israeli soldiers. Earlier in the same
area, an IDF vehicle had been fired upon; no one was hurt.

Yesterday, a bomb was detonated close to a military vehicle near the
north-Shomron community of Chomesh, while soldiers in southern Gaza area
near the Rafiach Crossing were heavily attacked with grenades and
gunfire. No one was hurt. For the second time this week, the eastern Gush
Etzion community of Tekoa was attacked by terrorist gunfire last night.
Three homes were damaged, including one two doors down from a woman
who had
just returned from a miraculous journey home on the Tunnels Highway; her
car was shot at, but she was unhurt.

A new Jerusalem neighborhood was added last night to the list of those
targeted by Palestinian terrorist gunfire. Two apartments in Malcha, home
to the Teddy Stadium and the city's largest shopping mall, were hit last
night. Malcha is just north/northwest of Gilo, and the two share the same
line of fire from Beit Jala, which lies south/southeast of Gilo.

JERUSALEM MAYOR WILL WORK FROM GILO
In a sign of solidarity with Gilo residents who are under daily terrorist
fire, Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert has announced he is setting up shop in
southern Jerusalem. He will spend a few hours each day in his new Gilo
office, beginning Sunday and until further notice. Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon has instructed government agencies to begin working immediately to
install more bulletproof windows in residents' homes. Until then, sandbags
placed on window sills facing PA autonomous areas will have to
suffice. Experts are skeptical that the bulletproofing will hold up to the
new and stronger machine-gun bullets used by the Palestinians of late.

An 86-year-old Gilo man sustained moderate-to-serious wounds from gunfire
last night; his condition is said to have stabilized over the night. Gilo
residents will protest tonight, for the first time, outside the Prime
Minister's home in Jerusalem, demanding an end to the shooting attacks
upon
their neighborhood.

In a related item, the Hevron solidarity tent in Bat Yam will come to an
end tonight with a flourish. Begun ten days ago to show support for the
besieged Jewish residents of Hevron, tonight's closing will feature
National Religious Party head Rabbi Yitzchak Levy, Bat Yam Chief Rabbi
David Chai HaCohen, and the father of the murdered 10-month-old Shalhevet
Pass, Itzik. Residents of Hevron continue to man a tent of their own near
the Avraham Avinu neighborhood, demanding that the army put an end to the
Palestinian sniper fire on the Jewish neighborhoods by conquering the Abu
Sneineh hills.

A "NEW" FRONT
The IDF claims that the PA is resorting to outright lies in its campaign
against Israel. In response to two PLO mortar shells fired at Netzarim in
Gaza this morning, the PA claimed that Israeli forces entered PA-controlled
territory afterwards and destroyed Palestinian positions. The IDF
spokesman said that this was totally unfounded, and that "this is just
another one in a long series of PA lies, in its attempt to incite and
escalate the hostilities."

FRANCE "SATISFIED" WITH ARAFAT'S EFFORTS
Following a meeting in France with PA chairman Yasser Arafat, French
President Jacques Chirac called upon Israel and the PA to accept and
implement the recommendations of the Mitchell Committee. A French
government spokesman indicated that France was "satisfied" with Arafat's
"genuine efforts towards achieving peace in the region."

MISHNAH STUDY RENEWED IN BEIT SHE'ARIM
For the first time in 1,800 years, the sounds of Mishnah [Talmudic
Tannaitic texts] being studied were again heard in the Galilee town of Beit
She'arim, when a Mishnah contest was held there last night. Thousands of
religious and non-religious students participated in the various rounds of
the contest, which was jointly sponsored by the Nature and Parks Authority,
the Tivon Local Council, and the Torah Culture Department of the Education
Ministry.

Noted linguist Avshalom Kor MC'ed the event, and told Arutz-7 yesterday,
"Waging a Mishnah contest in Beit She'arim is like having a Bible contest
at the gravesite of Moshe Rabbeinu; the only problem is that we don't know
where Moshe was buried. But we do know that Rabbe Yehuda HaNasi, the
redactor of the Mishnah, was buried in Beit She'arim. We never knew where
Beit She'arim was; throughout all the generations we only knew that such a
place existed, and that it was the place where Rabbe Yehuda HaNasi lived
and edited the Mishnah. Then, in the 1920's, a man named Alexander chose
a
hilltop to settle and build, and one day his son came running to him to
show him a piece of pottery he had found with a picture of a seven-branched
menorah. The father said he must show it to his friend Yitzchak Ben-Tzvi,
who later became the first President of Israel, and who in turn said that
it must be shown to the archaeologist Prof. Binyamin Mazar of Hebrew
University. Mazar decided to excavate, and a beautiful town was found
there, and fancy burial caves, including that of Rabbe Yehuda HaNasi with
its three arcs and a large plaza in front. In addition, another cave of
200 burial compartments was found for Jews who wished to be buried in this
important site, and a place where students would come to study Torah above
his gravesite..." Kor thanked Rabbi Yochanan Fried of the Torah Culture
Department, "who decided that the contest would be not only for religious
students, but for everyone…"

NW China turning to desert, causing huge dust storms to reach US

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: faith
                         Source: BBC News

Thu May 24,2001 -- NW parts of China are turning into desert, creating huge
dust storms that have reached as far as the United States. The
desertification process, evident in sandstorms that rage from March to the
end of May, could affect food production in China. "What the Chinese are
now faced with is the prospect of massive eastward migration... into the large
cities. And that would create even more problems," he said. Official
estimates show 2,330 square kilometres (900 square miles) of land turning
to desert in the provinces of Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Quinghai, Ningxia and
Xinjiang each year, Mr Brown said. An area several times as large is also
suffering a decline in productivity as it is degraded by overuse.

"Feeding 1.3 billion people, a population nearly five times that of the United
States, is not an easy matter." China's leaders appear to have "more or less"
accepted the fact that the country may no longer be able to feed itself, he
said. Desertification is not just China's problem. Dust storms that move
eastward across China, the Koreas and Japan this year made it all the way
across the Pacific to North America. On 18 April, scientists at the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) laboratory in Boulder,
Colorado, reported that a huge dust storm from northern China had reached
the U.S. "blanketing areas from Canada to Arizona with a layer of dust."
They reported the foothills of the Rocky Mountains were even obscured by
the dust from China.

Chlorine-resistant parasite big factor in rising number of pool illnesses

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: faith
                         Source: VNY/UPI

Thu May 24,2001 -- A chlorine-resistant parasite that causes potentially fatal
diarrhea is the biggest factor in a rising number of illnesses caused by
contaminated water in swimming pools, federal health officials said
Thursday. A recent example was a private swimming pool tainted with
cryptosporidium, an intestinal parasite that can survive for days in chlorinated
pools, sickened 700 people in Ohio last summer. The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention said cryptosporidium also caused a similar outbreak
last summer in Nebraska, where 225 people became sick after swimming at
a private club.

The parasite can live in the intestines of humans and animals and can
contaminate soil, water, food and surfaces that have been in contact with
infected feces. "Most people think that chlorine kills everything.
Cryptosporidium can live for days in a normally chlorinated swimming pool,"
said epidemiologist Michael Beach of the CDC's National Center for
Infectious Diseases. Reported outbreaks of diarrheal illness spread through
swimming pools have increased in recent years, the CDC said. E. coli,
giardia and shigella have also been blamed for the illnesses that have spread
through swimming pools and water parks. "The number of outbreaks due to
cryptosporidium has been climbing over the past few years," Beach said.

Not only is cryptosporidium extremely resistant to chlorine, and microscopic
enough to pass through conventional pool filters, the CDC said "a single fecal
accident (can) sufficiently contaminate an entire pool such that accidental
ingestion of a few mouthfuls of water can result in infection." Cryptosporidium
caused more than 100 deaths and sickened 403,000 people in 1993 when it
invaded the drinking water supply in Milwaukee, Wis. In Canada, hundreds of
people became sick earlier this year when the parasite contaminated the
North Battleford, Saskatchewan, water supply. "Cyrptosporidium causes a
severe diarrheal illness and it really puts at risk groups such as young
children and pregnant women who are really prone to dehydration," Beach
said. "It's particularly bad in individuals who are immune-compromised,
where cryptosporidium can actually cause a life-threatening illness."

The CDC recommended these measures to minimize the risk of infection: --
Don't swallow pool water. -- Always shower off before swimming. -- If you
have diarrhea, stay out of the pool entirely. -- Take young swimmers out for
regular bathroom breaks. -- Always wash your hands after using the
bathroom. --The CDC added that swim diapers and swim pants, required for
children at some pools, may offer a false sense of security regarding fecal
contamination of pools.

Lebanon urges reassessment of peace process after plane shot down

Thu May 24,2001 -- Lebanon's President Emile Lahoud on Thursday urged a
reassessment of the Middle East peace process and accused Israel of
driving the region to war. Lebanon makes the claim that Israel must have
went into their air space and chased the plane into Israel's airspace. While
Israel said the plane violated its airspace and could have been on a guerrilla
attack mission. Lahoud said Lebanon would continue to oppose Israel's
presence in the Har Dov border area, which Beirut claims. Syria, the main
power broker in Lebanon with 35,000 troops in the country, backs the claim.

"Facing this sad reality, the region finds itself on the brink of an all-out
confrontation as a direct consequence of Israel's intransigence," Lahoud said
in a speech marking the anniversary of Israel's withdrawal from south
Lebanon. Syrian-backed Hezbollah fighters, who led the guerrilla campaign
that compelled Israel to leave the south, are still fighting Israel's occupation
of the Har Dov area, at the foot of the Golan Heights captured by Israel from
Syria in 1967.

New world rivals Pluto

Thu May 24,2001 -- Detailed observations of a recently discovered large
object is prompting a reappraisal of the myriads of icy worlds that live in the
cold, outer reaches of our Solar System - the Kuiper Belt. It was immediately
recognised as a very large object, probably the largest in the Kuiper Belt
except for Pluto and its moon Charon. Combining data obtained from two
different types of telescope, the researchers have calculated Varuna's
diameter to be 900 km (550 miles). Varuna's large size threatens Pluto's
status as a fully-fledged planet as it now seems to be merely the largest of a
swarm of similar large worlds in deep space.

Scientists say that Varuna goes some way to vindicate the views held by the
late US astronomer Clyde Tombaugh. He discovered Pluto in 1930 looking
for what he called Planet X. He continued his search after its discovery
believing there were other worlds out there waiting to be discovered.
Astronomers are hopeful that further discoveries could be made in the Kuiper
Belt, following the launch of a telescope attached to the cargo bay of the
space shuttle.

Killer Caterpillars? What's happening to Kentucky's Thoroughbreds?

                         Weekend News Today

                         Source: ABC News

Thu May 24,2001 -- Now, scientists are looking at caterpillars and cherry
trees as possible sources of the mystery illness that is killing newborn
horses and threatening the state's multimillion-dollar thoroughbred industry.
Researchers met Monday to discuss data gathered since the deaths started
mounting a month ago. A total of 528 dead foals have been delivered to the
Gluck Equine Research Center in Lexington since April 28, many times
higher than normal. 12 were also received on Monday.

Evidence presented does not support an early theory that the deaths
resulted from a toxin in grass. The researchers sent samples of grasses
collected to labs around the country. But the preliminary results showed
negative. Scientists now have shifted their focus to the Eastern tent
caterpillar. Black or wild cherry trees, the caterpillar's habitat and food of
choice, can produce cyanide-like compounds that turn can into the poison in
the caterpillar's gut. But there are problems with the caterpillar theory as
well. Original tests on the caterpillars were negative for cyanide; but later
tests were positive for the mycotoxin zearalonone.

Estimates indicate Kentucky's $1.2 billion thoroughbred industry could see a
30 percent to 40 percent reduction in the number of horses born in 2002 and
losses of hundreds of millions of dollars over the next several years.
Kentucky normally produces about 10,000 thoroughbred foals each year,
about one-third of those born in the United States. What IS causing all this
trouble? Stay tuned for further updates.

Deep Impact Approved: Humanity's Turn to Slam into a Comet

                         Weekend News Today
                         Lead: faith
                         Source: Space.com

Thu May 24,2001 -- NASA's approval today of the $279 million Deep Impact
mission means humanity will no longer be only on the receiving end of comet
impacts. Now we're going to go and slam into a comet ourselves. Or at least
send a robot to do it. With today's announcement, development will now
proceed on the robotic mission to carry a camera-packing copper probe that
will smash into comet Tempel 1 on Independence Day 2005. The launch is
targeted for January 2004. Scientists will study the impact from ground-
based telescopes. And, depending on how things go, the fireworks might
even be visible to everyone on Earth.

A'Hearn said that while most NASA missions are passive in terms of how
they explore an object, Deep Impact is "completely different, because it is a
real experiment in which we do something to another body in the solar
system and see how it reacts." And how, the 770-pound probe will hit the
comet at 22,300 miles per hour and penetrate 5 to 10 meters. Then a bunch
of the comet's innards will spew outward at about half the speed that the
projectile came in. Over the course of about 200 seconds, more material will
be excavated, carving a hole as big as a football field and seven stories deep.

Before impact, the comet will be visible in a good amateur telescope. But the
freshly ejected material will enlarge the halo of debris around the comet, off
of which sunlight reflects, and it will brighten dramatically. "It should be
easily visible in good binoculars, and it might be easily visible with the naked
eye," A'Hearn said in a telephone interview. The impact will be strong enough
to alter the comet's orbit, and there has been some public concern over
whether the humanity's impact of a comet might alter its orbit enough to
cause the comet to threaten into Earth. Though A'Hearn says that would not
be possible.

Due to comets' propensity to threaten their neighbors -- which can make a
planetary mess of things -- makes comets supremely interesting to
scientists, who still know very little about what's inside the icy bodies with
the long, wacky orbits around the Sun. A side benefit of the mission is that it
will teach researchers something about how to deflect a comet or asteroid, in
the event that one ever is heading our way.

Near Earth Asteroid found to be 2 pieces

Thu May 24,2001 -- Double Asteroid: Astronomers announced yesterday that
near-Earth asteroid 1999 KW4 -- a space rock that will pass 12.6 lunar
distances from Earth on May 25th -- is a binary (two)! Data from NASA's
Goldstone Planetary Radar (pictured right) reveal "separations up to at least
2 km between the components, whose sizes differ by a factor of at least
three." 1999 KW4 will brighten to 11th magnitude in the days ahead --an
easy target for modest amateur telescopes equipped with CCD cameras-- as
it zips through the constellations Aquila and Ophiuchus.

1999 KW4 is a rare asteroid that passes even closer to the Sun than
Mercury does. It travels around our star once every 188 days following an
elliptical orbit that stretches from 0.2 AU to 1.08 AU. Some scientists think
1999 KW4 might be the nucleus of an extinct comet.

decisions of the Arab league, which call for cutting relations with Israel
because of its aggression against the Palestinian people." In Ramullah, the
Palestinian Authority on Wednesday expressed strong anger over the visit of
Wild Abdi to Israel and called on the Arab League to take a position towards
Mauritania. In Jerusalem, the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon expressed
his " great happiness for receiving the Mauritanian ministers."

Drought Drives Out Florida Snakes From Their Habitat

Thu May 24,2001 -- Thousands of snakes, many of them poisonous, have
been driven from their usual habitats throughout the drought-parched state of
Florida in search of water. While leaving their old habitats, many have bitten
numerous residents. People the entire length of the state have reported
seeing snakes in their gardens, and 38 snake bites have been reported in
South Florida alone so far this year.

Capt. Al Cruz of the department said, "Down here in South Florida the
deadliest snake we can run across is the Eastern diamondback rattlesnake.
It holds 8 times the venom needed to kill any human." Road superintendent
Pat Overton blamed the ongoing drought conditions for the exodus. Overton
said, "Everything is dry and the snakes are looking for water."

India readies for severe cyclone

                         Source: Weather.com

Thu May 24,2001 -- Authorities urged residents to prepare Thursday as an
intense cyclone churned in the Arabian Sea off the western coast of India.
Thousands of workers along the coast were evacuated, and more then 20
ports -- including Kandla Port, India's largest -- were put on alert. "People
living in coastal areas have been told to stay in their homes, stock up on
food and avoid dilapidated structures," said Murmu.

Steve Lyons, hurricane expert at The Weather Channel, put the storm in
perspective for westerners. "If it were classified as an Atlantic tropical
cyclone it would be a Category 4 hurricane," explained Lyons. "It's about
equivalent to a Hurricane Andrew in intensity, except it's bigger." Lyons said
that even though the cyclone is not forecast to make landfall, coastal areas
would still feel the storm's power. "It's extremely potent," Lyons said. "It's
producing some very, very large wave action that will impact the western
coast of India and cause major problems for fishermen and anyone that's on
the coast. The waves will be huge, at least 30 feet."

Currently, the cyclone has sustained winds of 135 mph, and gusts of more
than 150 mph. The storm is of special concern since many are still living in
temporary shelters ever since the powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake that
struck India on Jan. 26.

Thu May 24,2001 -- The personality cult of President Saparmurat Niyazov of
Turkmenistan is showing signs of turning into a religion after the Central
Asian despot's spokesman hailed him as "a prophet" and praised his "divine
abilities". Worshipping Mr Niyazov as divine is a logical next step. All public
buildings are decorated with his picture and everything that could be named
after him was so honoured years ago. The Rukhname will "become a
beacon, a bright light in the Third Millennium, which will illuminate the earth
from Central Asia and this will be the light of the prophet Saparmurat", his
spokesman, Kakamurat Balliyev, declared recently.

Peres: Arafat Issues Orders to Encourage And Intensify Violence
Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said that Palestinian Authority Chairman
Yasser Arafat has not only failed to publically call for a cease-fire, but has
instructed his people to encourage and intensify the violence, Israel Radio
reported.

According to Peres, the Palestinians have planted 11 bombs in shopping
malls since the Intifada began. Only in Netanya was the bomb was not
located in time.

Peres added that Israel was holding security talks as well as political
dialogue, in order to reach a cease-fire.

He also said that the government had accepted the Mitchell Commission
report in its entirety, and that statements saying otherwise should be
ignored. Ha'aretz

Putin Blasts 'Secret' Meeting
Russian President Vladimir Putin declared as "blatant lies" and a
"provocation" portions of leaked secret minutes of the March 29 meeting
between U.S. President George W. Bush and German Chancellor Gerhard
Schroeder, according to official Russian sources.

Putin specifically cited an alleged agreement between Bush and Schroeder
to stop cash aid to Russia since large amounts of currency is flowing from
Russia into overseas accounts. The account of the Bush-Schroeder accord
on aid to Russia is, according to Putin, "designed to damage Russian
relations with the European Union," which is Russia's largest investor and
lender. The Russian government also accused Washington and Berlin of
"holding … talks behind its [Russia's] back." World Net Daily

PA Fragile, But Arafat In Control
Israel's new cease-fire initiative puts Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser
Arafat in a bind and provides another incentive for Islamic terrorists to stage a
massive attack, a senior security official said yesterday.

"Arafat is currently banging his head against the wall trying to figure out how
to return the ball to the Israeli court," said the official.

He also said that Arafat is still in control, but not as much as he would like
to be as the Palestinian street has changed radically since the current
outbreak of violence.

"Arafat is concerned that he does not have absolute control, he can't control
the timing of an attack for example," said the official, Jerusalem Post

Iran Advances Plans To Launch Satellite
Despite budgetary woes, Iran is said to have advanced in plans to launch a
$300 million telecommunications satellite. Officials said the Zohreh satellite
will be launched in 2003. The satellite, which will be used to relay telephone
calls, radio and television, will be built by Russia. So far, the project is about
two years behind schedule. The satellite had been scheduled for launch in
November 2001. Russia will launch the satellite in a competition that had
included France and China. Earlier, India dropped out of the competition.
Officials said Russia signed a deal with Iran to build the satellite during a
meeting in March. France and China will remain in the project to build other
satellites. MENL

India Queues Up For Cures From 'Miracle Boy'
Thousands of people in India's northeastern state of Assam are making a
beeline to a village in the state for treatment by a boy believed to be gifted
with the ability to cure any disease, reports said on Wednesday.

The Asian Age newspaper reported the villagers of Beghara Siloka in central
Assam believe Pinku Deka, 12, dispenses "magic medicine" after powers
granted by the Hindu god Vishnu.

Villagers claimed that Vishnu appeared in a dream to the boy in February
and blessed him with powers to cure any disease by administering the roots
of some herbs procured from uninhabited areas. The boy also prepared
magic lockets for the patients, they said. Independent Online

Monkey Man Hysteria is Spreading
Hysteria over India's "Monkey Man", blamed for a range of attacks and two
deaths in New Delhi, has spread hundreds of miles to neighbouring
Rajasthan.

Residents across the Nagaur district, more than 220 miles west of the
capital, claim to have seen an apparition, described as a cross between a
huge monkey and a computerised robot. They have formed neighbourhood
defence committees.

Although, as in Delhi, there have been no confirmed sightings of the creature,
Niranjan Arya, Nagaur district head, has deployed a team of forest rangers to
trap it. telegraph

Chinese Dust Storms Could Stir Up Big Trouble for U.S.
Poor farming practices, population pressures and drought are intensifying
dust storms in China that some scientists and environmentalists believe may
ultimately pose a significant pollution problem for the United States.

The situation gained dramatic attention in April when a giant Chinese dust
storm tracked by weather satellites invaded North America, raining dust and
other pollution as it blew eastward.

The dust cloud, measuring thousands of square miles, formed April 5 on the
desert border of northwestern China and Mongolia. Over the next two weeks
it moved across the Pacific Ocean and North America, blanketing large
portions of the western United States and Canada as well as areas of New
England with a white haze. It dissipated over the Atlantic Ocean halfway to
Europe.

Dust storms have long been a major environmental and health concern not
only for China but also Japan and Korea, where they are called "yellow dust."
But scientists had never before tracked such a large and intense storm into
North America. Scripps Howard News Service

Oldest European Calendar 'Deciphered'
A Croatian archaeologist claims to have deciphered Europe's oldest calendar
from a ceramic pot with a decorative pattern of stars which matches those
seen on calendars in Egypt and Sumer.

Archaeologist Aleksandar Durman has dedicated years of research to the
pot, which was unearthed in 1978 in an ancient copper smelter in the eastern
Croatian town of Vinkovci.

Durman says the earliest calendars appeared around 3000 BC and that he
only recently realised the importance of the markings on the pot, which
dates from the Vucedol culture around 2600BC. He says the Stonehenge
prehistoric monument in Britain, which is known to be a form of calendar,
was finished several hundred years after the pot was made.

Durman discovered that the markings on it appeared to be illustrations of
constellations visible in the sky from the 45th parallel. "Unlike other ancient
calendars, usually based on the movements of the moon or the sun, this is
an entirely astral calendar," he says. IOL

Dalai Lama and Bush Meet 'Like Old Friends'
The Dalai Lama has described a meeting in Washington with U.S. President
George W. Bush as "excellent," much like "when two old friends" get
together for a reunion.

"I very much appreciate his human warmth," Tibet's exiled spiritual leader
told CNN's Wolf Blitzer.

The meeting with Bush was held despite angry complaints from China. China
sees the Dalai Lama as a supporter of independence for Tibet, which it
regards as Chinese territory.

The Dalai Lama said he told President Bush that "China is a great nation,
very important nation. Therefore, China should not isolate." He emphasized
that "I am not seeking independence, I am seeking genuine autonomy." CNN

Drug-Resistant Salmonella Strikes in Oregon
Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in
Atlanta, Georgia on Wednesday reported the first known US outbreak of
salmonella resistant to a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones.

Eleven people at two different nursing homes in Portland, Oregon became
infected with the strain of salmonella between February 1996 and December
1998.

Dr. Sonja Olsen of the CDC and colleagues report that the outbreak was
notable because patients acquired the infection in the hospital or nursing
home, and because it was difficult to control and lasted for several years.
Their finding is published in the May 24th issue of The New England Journal
of Medicine. Reuters

Infection From Genital Herpes Virus Soars in US
The number of Americans infected with genital herpes each year climbed
82% between 1970 and 1985, led by women, blacks and twenty-somethings,
US researchers report.

Their study, published in the May issue of the American Journal of
Epidemiology, found that the rate of new infections each year rose to 8.4 per
1,000 people from 4.6 per 1,000 people during that time.

Women had higher rates of infection than men (9.9 versus 6.9 per 1,000) and
blacks had higher rates of infection than whites (20.4 versus 6.3 per 1,000),
the investigators found. Those aged 20 to 29 had higher infection rates than
any other age group (14.6 per 1,000 men and 22.5 per 1,000 women).

And a greater percentage of women were being infected with the virus during
pregnancy, the researchers note, putting their babies at risk for neonatal
herpes, a disease that can cause permanent brain damage in those who
survive. Reuters

Late Friday, May 25th, the near-Earth asteroid 1999 KW4 will fly by Earth
13 times farther from our planet than the Moon. The space rock will be
brighter than 11th magnitude for much of the time between now and May
28th, making it an easy target for amateur astronomers with mid-sized
telescopes and CCD cameras. Yesterday, radar astronomers using NASA's
Goldstone Planetary Radar to monitor the approaching asteroid announced
that 1999 KW4 is a binary system. Visit spaceweather.com for more
information and (possibly) images of the asteroid as it passes our planet.
